Long Parsing Time : CFMX 6.1

2004-05-14 Thread Robertson-Ravo, Neil (RX)
Why on earth would an application.cfm file take between 800-1300ms to parse
each time without fail?  It seems to be the cfapplication tag as I have a
page with that alone and it still takes too long to parse?

You will probably have to do it via the Registry..we do it by adding out

You have to map Apache/Tomcat virtual hosts to the ColdFusion webapp,
otherwise CFML files won't be processed by CF.
I don't know how to map multiple virtual hosts to a single instance of
ColdFusion MX 6.1.

I am using mod_jk2 at Apache/Tomcat connector.

Thanks.

Serious breach of NDA - a polite warning

2004-05-14 Thread Peter Tilbrook
To breach any NDA is quite a serious offence.

A serious breach has occurred.

If you are already aware of the breach to the NDA do yourself a favour and forget about it. Do not replicate (re-publish) any information about it or a link to it. Do not discuss it on this list.

When MM are ready they will let us know.

As a CF user of 9 years let me "dream" about what is coming up.

Knock any further discussion of the breach on the head until MM themselves say otherwise. Report anything to MM themselves.

We are so lucky to have a company like MM (with Allaire team members) let us not let them down, please!

By the same token, do you know that you'll really gain anything from
breaking the app into multiple smaller pages?  Sure, each page may load
quicker, and the overall 'feel' would be snappier, but that approach could
end up taking the user 3x as long to perform a simple task.

Are those 1500 option select boxes going to get smaller by your approach?
If not, the usability isn't necessarily going to be any better.

How large is the page and what kind of a network will be used?  100Mb LAN
or is access going to be remote, over 36kbps dialup?

If the page load time does end up being slow, I'd reconsider taking the
user back to the form after a save.  Go to an intermediate page ('Changes
saved') with the option to go back or else just take them to a layer
above.

RE: Serious breach of NDA - a polite warning

2004-05-14 Thread Ben Forta
Tom,

You, and everyone, are more than welcome to provide comments, feedback, and
requests for future product versions. Discussion lists are not usually the
best forum for this, as it is hard to ensure that requests and ideas posted
in an open forum are correctly logged and recorded.

And yes, every request that we hear is logged and recorded. I was just in a
meeting yesterday reviewing long lists of these, looking for recurring
themes and trying to associate costs and customer value with each. We try to
create very customer driven products, and so discussing what you'd like, and
sharing it with us, helps immensely.

What is a no-no is disclosing any future plans or discussions before
Macromedia allows this. Macromedia, like just about every vendor, requires
that anyone with knowledge of future discussions or plans (alpha, beta, just
idea bouncing via customer advisory boards, etc.) sign non disclosure
agreements. Anyone who gets involved in the product planning and development
at this level is required to respect confidentiality.

This is what Peter was correctly referring to. As for ideas and wishlists,
keep them coming.

Why don't people let MM take care of their own NDA issues (and issue their
own warnings, in public or private, as they see fit)?  No matter how
politely you put it, it comes off as immature.  If you really feel the need
to blow the whistle on someone, send a complaint to them and/or to MM
directly, but leave the list out of it.  IMHO.

Ben,

Thanks for making this clear.  I may have (deliberately - sorry)
misinterpreted what Peter said:)  I think this does definitely cover the
people who know nothing, aren't part of an NDA program, they can talk about
what the hell they like.  The people who have signed the agreement, really
should not get involved in the conversation as it (in some extent) verifies
what these people are saying.

Have I made any sense, hope so!

Cheers,

Losing Session

2004-05-14 Thread Robertson-Ravo, Neil (RX)
Currently got an application which works fine on CF5 - where you are
redirected to an HTTPS connection during a checkout process. Basically you
are moving from http://www.foobar.com  to https://secure.foobar.com -  this
works at present as we have configured the load balancer to correctly
balance the users requests (Port 80 and Port 443) to the same machine,
therefore retaining the users session based on CFID/CFTOKEN which we pass in
the URL.

Recently we tested it on an MX install and found that the sessions are fine
when you are browsing/using the standard HTTP connection but when you are
'redirected' albeit on the same machine the session is lost completely.  If
you stay on one connection all the time you are also sweet (i.e. stay or
start on the https connection from start to finish).

Does MX handle this scenario differently than 5?  It seems that MX is simple
creating a new Cookie for each domain we visit and is ignoring the
CFID/CFTOKEN passed in the URL to associate the user with the session data
on the server - whereas CF5 would read the CFID/CFTOKEN value and get the
data regardless of the domain.

We obviously have some options  - like redeveloping the storage system BUT
we need to know if this is a problem/new issue in MX before.

Any thoughts?  If this is a change, was it made to ensure session swapping
could not take place - or at least easily not take place?

(apologies for X-Post as well for those on different lists - trying to find
an answer pronto!)

    Hello,

Is there any way to release a Java object from memory after it has
  been
    called?
example call:
    action="">

I have a class file that I call through CFMX, and if its not 100%
correct, I recompile the class file and try again.
However the old version of the class file is stuck in memory and I
  have
to recycle the CFMX services in order to
see the changes. Won't be as annoying with a finished object, but I
guess just for an easier test environment.

I have seen the documentation on ReleaseComObject() but this is
apparantly for COM objects only (and throws an error
when I use it anyways. "cannot cast void to non-void").

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

2004-05-14 Thread Johnny Le
I think the best way to do it is to use COM object.  It is a little bit more complicated it but it captures everything in Word documents including graphics.  I haven't tried PDF so I don't know how well it works with PDF.  You can find tutorial on COM object at cfcomet.com.  You can make it dynamic too.  It doesn't have to be static.

Re: Site security

2004-05-14 Thread Jeremy Brodie
Michael,

I do not work in this line of work, however, as someone who worked in an e-learning company I can lay out the possible alernatives.

A) Windows Media: This format has two files needing protection -- the ASX XML pointer file and the actual video file itself. In this senerio, if you place the Windows Media files on a seperate server (in a palce where you have a lot of bandwidth) then in all practicalities you can't copy the file. Windows Media server can run by itself without IIS. By adding Windows security you can block out people from copying the video files.

You will then need security on the ASX files to ensure the pointer points to the correct place. This would be the place for the CF based security, rather than on the actual video file itself.

This way only internal people will have access to the SAN and access to the video iteslf -- while outsiders might be able to read the pointer file -- they can't make changes to it.

B) Flash: If you go this route you can set up autentication using a CFC to connect directly to your movie.

C) Real: Real has the same sort of set up as windows media (pointer file and video file), except you have a wider variety of options for operating systems. Again you would use place the real server on a seperate server, locking down the server, placing the video files on a SAN -- and then placing the pointer files on the webserver. Again you will need security on the pointer file (in this case an RPM file).

Thanks to everyone who replied.  I learned alot looking these over.  I ended up using Charlies.  It's really nice looking and easily modified.
I had a couple of questions and comments about it.

- it uses structKeyExists.  I'm unfamilar with the term struct.  Does that indicate a complex data type, like an object?

- I hadn't seen 'writeOutput()' before.  I guess that's only for in-line cfscripts. I hadn't seen those before either.  It looks nice without all the cfifs and just ifs.

- Is the var variables a cf owned (built-in) term or is it just a var that you created here?  I don't see it defined before it has attributes added (ie variables.current_date).

- I had some trouble grabbing the code off the web page.  DW ignored all the spaces and it became one long sentence.   I then tried to reformat it, causing some problems.  I'm not complaining cause it saved me a bunch of time and looks really cool, but it might be nice to offer it as a linked, file download.

Again, thanks for all the replies and the great calendar.

Functions that start with Struct...() manipulate structures. This is a
complex datatype in CF (associative array or "object without methods")

is for the CF scripting language. You need the
'WriteOutput()' function to output to the page when using cfscript.

variables is the prefix of the page's local variable scope (like
'request', 'session', 'application', ...). In CFMX this is a built in
structure. You should always use the prefixes when referencing variables
(if they have one).

Any good web site developer.  Next time, don't respond at all.

As for the original post, yes, the AOL browser is Microsoft Internet
Explorer... it supports _javascript_ and dhtml quite nicely.

NOTE:  AOL for Mac OSX uses a gecko-based browser (Mozilla/Netscape).
If you want to take that into consideration, avoid using things like
"document.all" in your _javascript_.. more info on this is available via
google search.

RE: Write to a magnetic stripe card

2004-05-14 Thread Steve Nelson
Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not sure you'd really want CF to do that, because
CF is on the server side, whereas the mag stripe writer would likely be on
the client side. I think what would make more sense for you is to have a
Java/ActiveX object that can perform the writing, then simply send the
written data to CF and store the value in a db or whatever.

You should talk to Pete Freitag at CFdev.com. I doubt he's built it, but I'm
100% sure he is capable of doing it. He built a CF tag that connects to a
scanner, kind of a similar thing.

Re: days of the month

2004-05-14 Thread Charlie Griefer
Hi Daniel:

1) structKeyExists() - I use this to check the URL scope for the 'mo' and
'yr' variables.  It's really the same as (or in
cfscript if (isDefined('URL.mo')) { do something here }.  Arguably, it's a
little bit faster to use the structKeyExists() function.  I believe the
rationale was that it's just checking a structure for the existence of a
key, whereas isDefined() actually has to parse a string (the argument),
which is relatively slow.

2) writeOutput() is the same as document.write() in JS.  it simply writes
output to the screen.  Honestly, I don't know how 'correct' my usage of it
was in the calendar.  My goal in the calendar wasn't necessarily to go for a
best practice approach...but rather a "can I build a calender in 100%
cfscript" approach.

3) the 'variables' scope is just the local scope. is
the same as .  The latter is just more
explicit, which  would prevent any scope hunting as well as making the code
a bit more readable/self-documenting.

4) noted  : )

Glad you were able to put the code to use.

Charlie

2004-05-14 Thread Bryan F. Hogan
I would create an XML file that contains hosting customers that should
be emailed directly. Then after reading this file in from the error
template loop through the mail and if it finds the site from the xml
object from the cgi.server_name file to mailto whatever the xml file
defines.

custom_error_emails.xml

www.cfm-applications.com
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

error_template.cfm

1. read in xml file
2. parse xml file
3. loop through xml file looking for a matching cgi.server_name value.
4. use cfmail to send mail from customerEmailTo1
5. if no match found, email to yourself.

CF Isdefined on form click

2004-05-14 Thread Robert Orlini
I have a form that checks () if the user clicks a MORE button (). If the button is clicked it adds input form fields that are qty, description, price, total line.

It works the first time adding a second row with input form fields that are qty, description, price, total line. It does not work in succession. It just adds the second row and when I click MORE it refreshes, but does not add a third row or any other. It just displays the two rows.

Do I need to add a counter of some sort to the ?

I'm stumped. This is a new "trick" I'm trying.

Thanks for any suggestions.

RE: Write to a magnetic stripe card

2004-05-14 Thread Ian Skinner
One way I see this may work.  A ColdFusion app on the server could be used to generate the data to be written and this could be sent to the client.  An application on the client would receive this data and send it to the local strip writer.

There are allot of tricky specifics in the complicated interactions involved in this.  So quite likely this may not be the best solution.

Just because a tool (ColdFusion) CAN do something, does not necessarily mean it is the BEST way to do something.

What scope did you put the variable in?

Just putting it in Application.cfm doesn't mean that it's in the
Application scope

Use one of the more "global" scopes, such as Application or Request

I was just thinking of querying the database for the client info and sending

Form.Field.X and Form.Field.Y are only sent if you have a
TYPE="image" - if somebody hits return, then it's not passed at all

Try putting a hidden field in the form and checking for that, rather
than checking on the name of the submit button

RE: Write to a magnetic stripe card

2004-05-14 Thread Burns, John D
Not quite sure why you say that.  CF is a web based application.  It may
be able to call some kind of other application to do the writing, but CF
can't do it itself.  You may want to seriously consider something else.
While it is nice to stay within a single language, it seems like writing
a web application for a peripheral such as a card reader would waste
time more than anything else.  Just my opinion, but it makes sense in my
head.

That's not to say that it's not possible, because in one way you're
correct that CF can do darn near anything by calling another program or
something.  As always though, not everything that's possible should be
done.

Has anyone send code to a Magnetic Stripe Card Writer? I need to be able

I can read the card using a Wedge or USB reader because it act like a

I am looking at a card reader/writer from Meg-Tek that connects to a PC

looks like what you need to do is pass a hidden form field that defaults to
0.  each time you do your , increment that
value by 1, and then do an index loop over it outputting 'n' number of new
rows (so to answer your original question...yes, you need to add a counter
of some sort) :)

I just started getting a "too many client tasks"  ODBC errror.  I am running MX and several access databases. In the past I have run more Access db's than I am currently running. In some applications I am getting an error at the bottom of the screeen (the page processing correctly) stating the (client) variables storgage [access] could not be retrieved.  If I change the storage to my registry I do not get the error.  Has anyone else experienced this?

RE: good error.cfm template

I placed the error template in the CFIDE folder. This has a Mapping in the
admin.

I change his file to
instead of CFSET

I changed the CFSET AdminEmail to My Email address

And the mail tag to

to="#Application.erroremailsto#" subject="An error has been encountered on
Webo3" type="html">#Variables.myErrorPage#

Then in the clients Application File I put

I set the Site-Wide error handler and the missing template handler to
/CFIDE/_error.cfm in the Admin.

Now I get BCC's on all errors on the server and they get all the errors.

If anyone can see a potential problem please let me know.

Re: good error.cfm template

2004-05-14 Thread Bryan F. Hogan
Ah, your doing it both ways. If you remove the cferror tags, you will
see that your error page gets ignored when it looks for the application
variable.

CF looks for the error page in this order.

1. Looks for cferror in your application.
2. Looks for the global error page setting in the admin.
3. Returns it's own error handler.

If there is an error in 1 or 2 they will be ignored and CF's default
error handler will be returned.

You can't use variables other than local variables and error variables
in your error handler if your not going to include cferror on every site.

The only time this would be a problem is if your hosting clients that
write their own applications on your server's. You can't force them to
include a cferror tag and set that application variable in their
applications. So if they don't do that than the error page will be
ignored because it contained an error itself. So then cf will return the
default error handler.

If it were me, all of those fields would be in separate fields in the database.

However, it that's not an option, change the way you are posting the data so it's a list, and parse it out that way, using a delimiter like chr(128) or something else as innocuous. Then, pulling it apart is simply a retrieval of a particular list item.

So for example, if you used the pipe symbol ("|"):

User1|10/28/2003|2:53:52|THIS IS A TEST

Now it's as simple as

 un = listGetAt( query.column, 1, "|");
 dt = listGetAt( query.column, 2, "|");
 tm = listGetAt( query.column, 3, "|");
 cm = listGetAt( query.column, 4, "|");

#un# | #dt# #tm#
#cm#

As far as regex, the problem is the username.  eg is it always one word, or is it possible to have one with spaces in it?  If your example is correct, I would say that a regex solution won't work either.

Show us some actual data.

Thanks,
Robert

however it strikes me that perhaps your access client storage tables are
corrupt... or perhaps you have trouble with the allocation for the tables
and they can't grow anymore; out of space on the disk or other similar problem?

Re: help with regular expressions!

2004-05-14 Thread Robert Bartlett
If you don't need the pipe symbol betwee the username and the date, then the following would do:

txt = query.column;
txt = replace( txt, "***", "
txt = replace( txt, "***", ""); // replace second ***
cmStart = val( Find( "", txt)+7 );
cmEnd = len(txt);
dspTxt = mid( txt, 1, cmStart);
cm = mid( txt, cmStart, cmEnd - cmStart);

#dsptxt#
#cm#

Still, if you could replace your posting script to change it's format that would be the way to do it.  Either (ok) MAKE it post the list in the format you need it in, or (BEST) break the data into separate columns in your database.

looks like what you need to do is pass a hidden form field that defaults to
0.  each time you do your , increment that
value by 1, and then do an index loop over it outputting 'n' number of new
rows (so to answer your original question...yes, you need to add a counter

regular expression for line and paragraph breaks

2004-05-14 Thread Johnny Le
Hi,

I am copying the text from MS Word to a coldfusion page. The text
in MS Word is in a table of many cells. I am trying to re-recreate
the table in ColdFusion using regular _expression_. #chr(10)# detects
the end of a row. #chr(9)# detects the end of a cell. What
characters would detect the line break (br) and the paragraph break
(p) of the text inside a cell?
Thanks.

You should be able to put your Tomcat and CFMX directives, whatever they may
be, within the regular portion of httpd.conf, rather than within VirtualHost
directives. At least, that's how everything else I've used with Apache has
worked.

I agree with John that CF may not be the best choice. I
have written some smart card applicaions using java
card http://java.sun.com/products/javacard/ not
magnetic cards - but there should be something like
that. If it's in java you could write a wrapper for it
- but then your using java so seems like you might as
well just write a java app...

Good luck,

FuseAction: Form Not setting FA=

2004-05-14 Thread Randy Messer
I have a set of fuseaction applications that I use over and over. My most recent installation doesn't allow me to insert or update the SQL db using form
submit. I can update by using  A href with URL string. I have reviewed appplication, app_local, App_global and  index.cfm and it all looks clean. Tested on other machines with similar results. If I pull out code snippet and test other directory the form submit button works. SQL properites/permissions have all been checked. I can pull data but not insert/update.

I'm baffled.

Re: Securing CF Apps against SQL Injection & Cross Site Scripting

2004-05-14 Thread Brandon Harper
I'm jumping a little late into this discussion, but I see a couple of
things which haven't been discussed.

I think you need to do protection against XSS and SQL Injection in
multiple layers.

1.) Web Server / Application Server Layer
2.) Pre-Application Execution
3.) Post User Input / Pre Query

1:

On IIS you can use the Microsoft tool URLScan for this, or the Aqtronix
Web Knight.  I believe this capability is built into IIS 6 on Win2K3,
but I haven't used it yet to know for sure.

For Apache, you should check into mod_security.  I was pretty happy when
this was released, and use it on my site.

2:

I essentially wrote a custom app which checks various scopes for various
RegEx's related to XSS and SQL Injection which are ran from
Application.cfm, as well as the detection of buffer overflow
attempts, etc.  If something is violated, we get an e-mail with the
details about it, and the user is redirected gracefully.

3:

Make sure you scrub all user input, including checking the Len(Trim)) of
each parameter to make sure it's not too long.  Never trust anything which
is coming in via form, url, cookie, or client variables (such as
CGI.HTTP_USER_AGENT.  And as others have mentioned, proper granular
security on databases.

This is a bit on the anal side, but the software I work with requires it.

Note that pretty much all of these solutions assume you have a decent
grasp of writing RegEx's, as well as know how the various exploits can be
performed.

Thanks,

- Brandon

More Information:

Also URL string when posted by Form Submit doesn't include FA=
Example should read:
admin/index.cfm?FA=JobCat&Job_dept=123

Instead it reads:
admin/index.cfm?Job_dept=123

Try changing your form from get to post, or vice-versa. Also try to
remove the fuseaction variable from the form tag and put it into a
hidden form field:

I can't remember what causes this, but it seems to me that I started
having this problem when we I started working with CFMX.

Cached queries aren't taken from the name, but taken from the datasource
and the SQL

If you run the same query on the same datasource, it'll pull it from the
cache rather than going to the server

You could called all of your queries "getTheData", CF won't care

URLScan.

Session variable getting disappeared after CFMX home page in JRun

2004-05-14 Thread ANNAMANAIDU, VENKATESH (SBCSI)
Gurus,
We have a mystery in our development server.

Application.cfm is  follows
..
..

..
..

In "set_session.cfm",after our authentication session variable is set as
follows,

Authentication
All pages looks for this session, otherwise it kicks you out.
Home page works fine and we can see the session variable in debug
statement.

But, here is mystery, if we click any link in home page, session
variable gets
disappeared and hence that page kicks you out. All links are cfmx
templates in same server and directory.

Also
(1) We have enabled session management in Application.cfm
(2) We have given ample time in CFMX admin for session timeout.

Have you come across this issue of losing sessions. Any ideas how to
retain session, between pages?

Re: ColdFusion installation issue

2004-05-14 Thread Doug White
I set up a new installation of Windows 2003 Enterprise, [ IIS 6.0 ]and then
installed CFMX 6.1.
I an not using Active Directory.

After going through the install chores, the installer notifies you that the
installation was successful and that CFMX administrator will then open in the
browser to complete the installation.

This is where I ran into a problem  When IE opens up and tries to open the CFMX
administrator page, it reports "SERVICE NOT AVAILABLE"

All files seem to be in the right place, and the ISAPI configuration appears to
be set up by the installer correctly.  all the settings shown in the exhibit of
Dave Watts paper on the Macromedia site appear to be in place.

Anyone have a clue as what I need to do to get this installation completed?

Thanks

This code throws the error: Too Few Parameters

SELECT tblusers.username, tblJobSeekers.jsfname, tblJobSeekers.jslname,
tblJobSeekers.jsemail, tblJobSeekers.jscountry, tblJobSeekers.pverify,
tblJobSeekers.jsphone1, [atfname] & " " & [atlname] AS AgentName
FROM tblAgent INNER JOIN (tblusers INNER JOIN tblJobSeekers ON
tblusers.userid = tblJobSeekers.userid) ON tblAgent.atid =
tblJobSeekers.agentid
ORDER BY tblJobSeekers.jslname;

>From this you can see that I want to concatenate the atfname and atlname
fields into one field and call it Agent Name. There's a reason I need to
have one column with this value rather than do it later when I'm
displaying the data, its for use with a custom tag.

Can anyone suggest why I'm getting this error, and what should be the
correct syntax? This particular query works perfectly from within MS
Access itself.

Try atfname || ' ' || atlname AgentName

I got that from my teaching yourself sql in 21 days book p 54.
