RE: Any issues with Helm Control Panel?
Igotta say, I really like HELM. It's a really nice interface and apart from the recent upgrade bug (which didn't effect the server, just HELM) it's been rather swell. They have a lovely support forum as well, like Phil mentioned. Another thing Phil didn't mention, is that if you have sites on a static IP, and add a subdomain, that subdomain does not always get put on the right IP. Our setup we run mostly IP-less ... so creating sub domains is easy peezy ... but on the few we have static IPs on, whenever I create a sub, I have to go into IIS and adjust the host headers to reflect the proper static IP. No big deal if you have control of the server ... but I really don't know whether they got that fixed or what happens in the shared hosting environment ... Good luck Erika From: Michael Kear My hosting wholesaler wants us to switch from the gawd-awful Etrinix control panel for hosting to Helm, and while I realise nothing is perfect, are there any serious issues with Helm?Does anyone here use it either as wholesaler or reseller or site owner? How have you found it to be? Beautiful site ... and I like your shopping cart layout. RE: Hosting Solutions
I have a chime against uplinkearth ... Whilst their support might be good and I never had any problems with server uptime, their flexibility with customer issues is NOT. So just a small story to be aware in case it ever happens to anyone else ... We had a house robbery and all credit cards were stolen, one of which paid for the uplinkearth account. It was just a small test account, nothing mission critical, and only cost about $4.75 (approx.) a month. The timing of the robbery sucked, because two days later, the uplinkearth bill was due. We had NOTHING to pay it with as ALL cards were cancelled and we were awaiting replacements. The first replacements were not due until 1 day after their grace period of 5 days. So I figured, hey, no problem, I'll call them up and ask for a two day extension or whatever they would give so I could give them the new credit card number. This worked with our main dedicated host (www.handynetworks.com) with whom we have a bill of over $1000 a month. They were willing to wait. The uplinkearth bill was like $14.25 (billed quarterly). Uplinkearth customer service said NO. Just a flat out, NO we can't work with you, no sympathy for being robbed, just a flat out NO. I promptly cancelled the account of course. Sometimes crap happens, and I think a company should be able to work with special situations, especially when the amount was ludicrously low. They weren't even willing to listen. I think that sucks. But, that's just my experience. RE: 'Webinars'
The WebEx API contract is very expensive, true, especially since they switched to a per seat, PER MINUTE conference pricing plan. Gone are the days when you could leave a conference open to do testing on ;) BUT If anything goes wrong, you've got a whole support department to work with ... They work very hard to keep cross browser and cross OS compatible and their tech support people are great. I love the concept of using FlashComm and Breeze for smaller, non-critical conferences ... And I can't wait until we have time to explore that option even further ... But I am very comfortable with WebEx, relying on them to be there for the international pharmaceutical conferences we're a part of. Companies where uptime and NO technical glitches is of the utmost priority. The other plus at the moment with WebEx is brand recognition. I've heard of a few conference contracts that were only signed because the development company agreed to use WebEx. Placeware is another option. RE: Beta 3 is up! was: macromedia web site
I *really* enjoyed visiting the MM site this past week. It was indeed faster all over for me ... Even the exchange was faster to load. Maybe I'm just having a good week. ;) I still have HTML checked off for my version, and everything popped up nice and fast on my WinXP (Home) desktop and my WinXP (Pro) Laptop. It was even quick on the Mac and everything loaded fine on our Win2k machines. We are on a 1MB link, so I would expect everything to be somewhat speedybut it was definitely better than the first release. I still think you should drop the You may not have everything message off the top ... But what the heck. ;) The report was very interesting and made a good read, and it's papers like those that just might make some of the people that control the money purses, open them up a bit more. The more documentation and real-world examples we have, *that work*, the better to be able to sell skeptics a technology that they might raise an eyebrow to. Now if we can get some really good up-to-date comparisons of ASP/PHP apps versus ColdFusion apps, with ROI comparisons included (not putting those languages down, right tool for the job stuff is always adhered to) then from a marketing perspective, we could be heading to some great places. This all very nice of you Michael, and I have already received it from another kind person ... But it kinda misses some of the point I was trying to make. I love flash. It's pretty. RE: CF MX works on WebSite Pro (was: RE: Ridiculous Problem!)
| From: Dave Watts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] | | | The thing is, if you install IIS correctly, and disable the | stuff that you don't use, it's not a security patch | circus. By default, IIS includes a lot of features that | WebSite doesn't have, and that most people don't use | anyway. It's trivial to remove those unused features, and | those are the things which frequently cause IIS security problems. I have to be a Dave groupie, and agree ... In the past several years we've used IIS, we've never (gotta knock on wood here) had any security problems. We just ALWAYS make sure we uninstall all the silly extras, and just use the bits we absolutely have to have ... Then we run it through the security check tools, apply appropriate patches, and away we go. Works fine. Of course we like the other web servers out there as well, we just like to get along with all OS's. You never know when one will totally get knocked off it's feet and disappear. RE: MX training courses now available
I answered off-list, but just to throw my 2 cents worth in here as well, It is an awesome class. Adam and Dave are fantastic, they treat you like gold, and you get so much out of the class your brain is buzzing for months. Mine is still buzzing and it's almost a year later. I keep some of my notes from class by my side to this day. They give you so many great techniques and they push your abilities to the limit. It is definitely not for the 9-5'ers, as you do put in a full 10-12 hour day, but they make sure you have plenty of drink and snacks, and it NEVER gets boring. Even for the really advanced people I had in my class. They go way above and beyond their duties, and by the end of the week, not only will you feel like part of the family, but you'll be armed with so much sample code and techniques, you won't know where to run first. A must do if you are looking for a great training class. Erika - Erika L. RE: [style] usernames
We have this discussion, all the time ... And we've come down to what we think is the best of both worlds ... We allow usernames that are people's email addresses. Yes, it's a double entry, but not everyone wants to use an email address as a username. I hate to. I much prefer to use weberika. I always remember it .. And it's rarely taken. (no wisenhimers now ;) ... ) However, if you want to use [EMAIL PROTECTED] to sign up to one of our websites, why go right ahead ... It's up to the user anyway to keep their info up to date. We very rarely allow people to change their usernames once they are chosen ... But will do if the customer requests this feature. As for username/password retrieval All we ask for is an email address. Easy enough ... Unless of course you forget your email address that you used and we've never had that problem yet (knock on wood). Either scenario still requires a DB check to ensure nobody enters duplicate info/correct data, etc ... it just comes down to personal style and business processes. Erika | -Original Message- | From: Bud [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] | | The one thing I like about using e-mail addresses is, if | people come | back to your site, and don't remember their username, many will | simply register again if it doesn't cost anything to | register and if | there is no information they need from a previous session. For | instance, my shopping cart. If I used a username, which I used to, | and they forget it, which they always do, they just enter their | billing info again. Since I use e-mail now, when they go to log in | they know their e-mail address. If they enter the wrong password I | just e-mail it to them. If they try to sign up again rather than | logging in, unless they've changed their e-mail address since their | initial purchase, I can catch it and send them to the login screen. | | I can never remember my username at places that take usernames | because buddy is ALWAYS taken. Us die-hard hand-coders aren't expected to use DWMX. We have Homesite+. Apparently. And we get to keep using CFStudio. OR we can use both side by side, which I can't until I upgrade my RAM, because my computer can't handle Outlook, CFStudio, DWMX and 2-10 Browser windows open all at once, even with 256MB RAM! It's ok. I am sad but I'll get over it. I liked it while it lasted. I'll still upgrade though. Use it just for web services and CFC's until someone comes out with an add-on for CFStudio for those things ... It's only time. And don't get me wrong, it really is a fantstic product on it's own. RE: CFStudio DWMX hiccups
Here's a BAD hiccup. I have a file name that's pretty long (26 characters). Not hugely long, but apparently longer than Dreamweaver wants it. It was ok, until I clicked on the actual file on the left to copy the name of it to use in my code, then when I clicked off it, it kept telling me the name was too long in a popup, I don't want to change it. I alt-tabbed to switch to Outlook to write this post, I just switched back to count the letters, and Dreamweaver let go of the file. I clicked back on the file, then tried to click off again, same message. This is unacceptableworkarounds? Anybody else get this? OnRequestEnd.cfm not running
OK. This is weird. I thought OnRequestEnd runs every time a page is called, as long as there is a matching Application.cfm in the app Am I ok so far? When I first load the form page ... All the templates that are supposed to run, indeed do so. Including OnRequestEnd.cfm. RE: OnRequestEnd.cfm not running
Thanks for the posts, and to answer some of the q's ... My OnRequestEnd.cfm resides in the same folder as my Application.cfm, spelled exactly that way even though the site runs on IIS 5 on a Win 2K box .. I like to watch file case in the off-chance the app ever gets moved to a Unix box. The Application and OnRequestEnd reside in the outermost folder of the app, and I only go about two folders deep at any time. This works perfectly at moment ... I also have a cfapplication designated in Application.cfm. I have a form.cfm page and a formSubmit.cfm page. These sit one folder down. When you go to form.cfm, OnRequestEnd runs fine. When you submit the form.cfm, and formSubmit.cfm checks for data validity ... phone number digits, blank fields, email validity, that kind of error. If there is something wrong, I send them back to the form.cfm via a cfinclude NOT a cflocation ... so that's not the problem. It only happens in this situation. I gues a quick fix would be to cfinclude the OnRequestEnd after the original include if there's an error, but it just seems to me that this is wrong, as Application runs again, why doesn't OnRequestEnd?
