Might have to give that a try Byron, but I will need to talk to hostek
first as they will no longer re-spool any mail if it stops again. Which
means that unless it is respooled no mail will be allowed through.

And yes the from email matches the account.

Re: More Mail woes with Gmail with ColdFusion

2013-08-30 Thread Byron Mann

Maybe also try another Gmail account from CF when the issue crops up. This
with Russ 's suggestion would narrow it further to a CF, server or Gmail
account issue.

Also, do your from addresses in the emails match your Gmail account? I can
see them potentially blocking if not, thinking the account was compromised,
and locking the account for a time period.

You could stick phpmailer up there and try using that when the issue occurs
to see if it is limited to cf, perhsps you will get some better debugging
data.

perhaps they have automatic respooling enabled, I know a lot of cf hosts do
use my automatic respooler plugin for cfadmin.
In which case, again you would not notice the issue if you do not have to
contact them and ask them to do it manually.

Re: More Mail woes with Gmail with ColdFusion

2013-08-29 Thread Russ Michaels

Yes because as I also suggested yesterday if this is a connection limit
issue then maintaining the connection would he the cause.
The cname makes no difference to that because you are still connecting to
the same server, the cname is just an alias.

Ah yes I forgot there is no longer a free version. But it is worth paying
for if youbojly have 1 or 2 users then it is cheap.

otherwise your best best is to use some other domain temporarilyfor 30 days
which you can use to reproduce the problem.

Byron, to be honest this is something that I am not familiar with and have
left that stuff up to Hostek. I have passed this thread on to Hostek to
maybe provide more details and maybe get some other perspective on this
problem.

But from what Hostek have told me, even if the maintain connections is
enabled, would the CNAME trick stop that in its tracks?

Re: More Mail woes with Gmail with ColdFusion

2013-08-28 Thread Byron Mann

Imap for Gmail has a 15 connection limit for an account. I'm wondering (as
others) of this is simply something similar for smtp.

It is quite feasible Gmail is throttling connections from a single ip or
subnet where the hostek server resides. Maybe some previous abuse by the
ip.

Now that you have the cname workaround in place, did hostek revert back to
the maintain connections enabled?

I could maybe see the behavior you described, if another customer on the
server is sending a large number of mails, and they have connection caching
disabled and/or are spooling to memory.

They should be spooling to disk and have maintain connections enabled.

So the emails are going into the Sent folder on Google's mail servers
but not getting to their recipients? That's implying they're getting to
Google OK and it's a deliverability issue on their end not an issue with
getting the messages from your CF server to Google.

Ok lets be clear this is not the normal gmail, only the smtp.gmail.com is
being used to send the mail. But yes when you send mail using your google
app account, the sent mail is sitting in the sent folder.

This is how I found out about the spool connection issue to begin with, as
many other customers on the same server, who sent mail using gmail, is
sitting in my sent folder.

Re: More Mail woes with Gmail with ColdFusion

2013-08-28 Thread Andrew Scott

And I don't believe this is a gmail issue either and seems to lead to a
problem with / at Hostek itself.

Here is what I do know.

Obviously if the mail is using the ColdFusion default details, aka the
relay Hostek have setup, the mail is sent. If I use the gmail server on
hostek it will eventually fail. When it fails on Hostek, I can still use
the same credentials on another server and the mail is still sent.

It is almost like as suggested, the mail is being seen as spam from hostek
somehow.

Hostek have now made changes, something along the lines of the JRE caching
the DNS indefinitely, which has now been changed to ever 4 hours. So I will
now have to wait and see if this changes anything.

Re: More Mail woes with Gmail with ColdFusion

2013-08-28 Thread Russ Michaels

I presume you have checked your sent items to be sure?
It may be that the cf problem has caused spam blocks to kick in and block
the hostek server.
Unfortunately if you are just using a free gmail account then you get no
support so cannot contact google to find out.

You could ask hostek if you vould get an extract from the mail log and see
if it tells you anything.

My best suggestion would still be to use sendgrid.net.

Re: More Mail woes with Gmail with ColdFusion

2013-08-28 Thread Andrew Scott

Well there is no way I can be reaching the daily limit, at the most around
50 emails a day is sent out which is a far cry from the limits that Google
have in place. As I am now using a CNAME in the DNS for my mail server,
that hasn't helped at all, it continues to stop sending.

And if I am reaching my limits? How does it work for 8 months sending the
same amount of emails a day, then just stop working!

Re: More Mail woes with Gmail with ColdFusion

If it is only gmail that is having this issue then I would say that a very
likely cause is that you are exceeding the daily sending limit.
This is even more likely if emails are being sent through the wrong account
as other customers would using up your sending limit and vice versa.

Gmail requires TLS if you're going to authenticate. If I recall
correctly, you need to authenticate if you're going to send to
non-Gmail users. For example, I have a scanner that I've set up to
email people within our Apps domain - it doesn't need TLS, but it can
only send to those people.

Re: More Mail woes with Gmail with ColdFusion

2013-08-26 Thread Andrew Scott

Russ & Dave, that is the thing I made the DNS change on the weekend and
waited for it to propagate around before making the change to use that DNS
entry. Problem is I think it stopped sending prior to that change and of
course it works flawlessly here locally to the same DNS entry.

I have had it re-spooled again and may have to wait 2 more days and see if
it stops again. But I am not 100% sure, but I think I did make the
application changes before it stopped sending again.

Hostek have stated that they have changed and double checked all
certificates, and even re applied them from my understanding as well. As
well as rolling back any patches just to make sure.

The annoying thing is that it seems to be related to that damn spool
problem, as Hostek have stated twice in the last 4-5 days that they have
removed that setting. And it seems to be around the time it has stopped on
both occasions. I can only hope that the 2 are completely related.

Hostek have pinged Adobe and are awaiting for them to help out here, Hostek
are usually very good with these sort of problems, after all they
discovered this original problem 8 months ago, and although I can't recall
the only problem I was having then, was that I saw Hostek customers emails
in my sent folder. But this even has them stumped now for 5 weeks.

that still doesn't change the fact that it should be either accepted or
rejected, not accepted for a while and then rejected until CF is restarted,
I think Andrew needs to double check that the emails are actually sending
when using the CNAME record.

When you use a browser, you can ignore certificate errors too. You
often don't have that option when using certificates from within
programs that aren't designed for end-users. CF people wouldn't have
to fiddle with the keystore if we could just ignore cert errors.

that certainly is a possibility Dave, however if that was the problem then
one would expect it to happen consistently not intermittently.
I can't say I have tested with CF, but in general SMTP over SSL should work
as long as there is a valid certificate regardless of the domain, when
using an email client you can choose to ignore any errors relating tot he
domain name.

Andrew did you try NOT spooling the emails to disk ?

That looks to me like a regular SSL/TLS error. It's looking for a TLS
certificate from smtp.domain.com, but Gmail's certificate is going to
return smtp.gmail.com.

That should be ColdFusion 10 and Java 1.6... Not sure how that got trimmed
or maybe I just thought it :-)

More Mail woes with Gmail with ColdFusion

2013-08-25 Thread Andrew Scott

Ok since my last post on a similar subject, I added the smtp.domain.com as
an alias to smtp.gmail.com to stop the chances of me receiving other
peoples mail in my sent folder.

Not sure why but someone on Hostek keeps putting the maintain mail
connection back on, so it was was a good idea to add the above to my DNS
and see how things go.

However, the mail is still continuing to stop being sent every two days.

The only thing that I see in the logs is the following.

*"Error","scheduler-0","08/25/13","17:05:17",,"javax.mail.MessagingException:
Could not connect to SMTP host: smtp.domain.com, port: 465; nested
exception is: javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Server key"*
*
*
*javax.mail.MessagingException: Could not connect to SMTP host: **
smtp.domain.com**, port: 465;*

There seems to be very little out there on this searchable by google, for
ColdFusion but plenty of information for Java problems with this error.

However I did come across the following, who appears to be having the same
issue.

https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3583375

As well as

https://forums.aws.amazon.com/thread.jspa?messageID=473354#

And something that seems to affect Java 7

http://www.gubatron.com/blog/2013/08/07/solved-java7-smtp-issue-caused-by-sun-security-pkcs11-wrapper-pkcs11exception/

What I can tell you is that the host I am using, Hostek are using
ColdFusion 1.6 and I think the revision is 024. I can also confirm that the
dates from the amazon link, seem to be around the same time I started
getting this problem. Sending them back for re-spool seems to work, not
sure if there is anything else my host is doing, as I assumed they are just
re-spooling the mail. But it will stay working for 2 days and then stop
like clock work, until we repeat the respool again.

I have no clue on the full stack trace, as the only information I see is
what I have posted above. I might ping Hostek again, and see if they have a
full stack trace on this.

I am reaching out to others here, hopefully trying to find a solution that
will stop this in its tracks.
