2010-12-14 Thread Bill Vander Werf
The jobs went away because of the UAW. Unions were a good thing at their
inception, but they have completely outlived their usefulness.

As a business owner, I understand that you need to constantly cut costs to
be competitive. In manufacturing, labor is a huge part of the cost of
production. Labor costs have to be passed on to the consumer.

Union greed and an ever-increasing entitlement mentality are the things
killing manufacturing in this country, not the manufacturers or the
government.

I'm thinking about a set but that's a lot of bucks if they don't last.
Their 90 day warranty isn't too confidence inspiring either.

I guess I want to know how well they fit. fit is good

Do they leak at the butterflies. yes but just a bit

Have you run into clearance problems ( will be going on a 71 SS 454 stock
ride height with long tube headers and x pipe. you may need to move the floor
depending on where they are located

If you had issues with the company.

How long did they last or are they still working. first set about 1 week the
screws that hold the solinoid to the butterfly backed out and ripped out the
wiring summit replaced them i took the new ones apart before i installed them
and put locktight on all there screws

Do any of you use the controller that can be purchased additionally. came
with it

I know 3 wing nuts and the caps come off but I was just looking at this as an
option.

[Chevelle-list] I40 convoy update

2010-06-01 Thread Bill Lessenberry
I haven't had many responses from folks who are going, and more than
I would like to have from folks who aren't. So here we are, a week
and one day from the start of the convoy, and I need to know who's in
who's not. This way we'll know when everyone's at the Shell
station in Lonoke and ready to hit the road for G'ville.
The responses I've received all want to leave Lonoke around 9:00 AM
so we can miss the traffic in Nashville. Everyone's OK with the
Cajun Catfish Restaurant to eat lunch.
Please email your cell phone numbers to me so I can make a list of
them to give out. If you have walkie talkies, bring them too.

I'll do a couple more updates, the last one next Tuesday night.

[Chevelle-list] Cat herding time

2010-05-10 Thread Bill Lessenberry
Okey dokey, it's time to start organizing the 2010 I-40 Eastbound
convoy to Chevelleabration 10. We'll be leaving on Wednesday, June
9th. I'm sending this email to all the folks who have participated in
the past. Please email me back to confirm if you're going or not.
The plan from previous years has been to meet at the Lonoke AR exit,
leave there at 10:00 AM, drive to Memphis to eat at the Cajun
Catfish Resturaurant and hook up with the Memphis group, then head to
Nashville.

There have been some ideas about starting earlier from Lonoke in
order to get to Nashville earlier to beat the rush hour
traffic. Instead of leaving Lonoke at 10:00 AM, we could leave at
9:00 and get there an hour sooner. Let me know your thoughts on this, please.

Last year the travelling folks stayed at the Holiday Inn Express
Hotel Suites at 4306 McCain Blvd in North Little Rock. Here's the
website-
http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/litmb?rpb=hotelcrUrl=/h/d/hi/1/en/hotelsearchresultshttp://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/litmb?rpb=hotelcrUrl=/h/d/hi/1/en/hotelsearchresults

This is a nice place with easy access to I-40 without any morning
rush hour traffic hassles. I can look for other places to stay if you
need me to.

Is the Cajun Catfish Restaurant still OK with ya'll? The food and
the parking are great, we'll be there a little earlier, so the
service should be faster and we can head out to Nashville sooner.

Can't wait to see ya'll again.

Re: [Chevelle-list] A different Type of Question

2009-11-08 Thread Bill Lessenberry
Nitrogen filling stations cost upwards of $5000. The folks who buy
them need a return on investment, so they tout the benefits of
nitrogen so they can sell it to you. To my knowledge, there is no
research that shows any thing that makes it worth the money that the
consumer spends. It's a profit center (once the machine is paid off)
for the business that buys the equipment, nothing more.
Racing teams use nitrogen to fill the tires so that they can have a
consistent rise in temperature and pressure because of the lack of
moisture in the tire. Street tires don't need it.

I just purchased a new GMC vehicle and the dealer offered the
following new package called Nitro Fill'. The claim is that
nitrogen is better than compressed air in a tire. They claim that
nitrogen is a dry gas and is free of moisture. It doesn't
deteriorate the rubber and it is lss susceptible to air loss with
temperature changes.

Wife's 2003 Sable doesn't want to start. Turn ignition key and all it does
is click several times. All accessories work (radio, power windows, seats,
headlights, etc.) She said odd things happening the last few days - with
A/C on max the radio would come on by itself, she'd turn it off and a few
minutes later it'd come back on - also with A/C on max, driver window
wouldn't go down. Not sure if A/C had anything to do with the radio and/or
window or not.

Checked battery connections, 14-16 volts across the battery terminals,
battery level good.

Naturally being a holiday weekend, nothing open to day and maybe not

[Chevelle-list] I-40 Eastbound Convoy

2009-05-04 Thread Bill Lessenberry
It's May 4th, time to begin the planning for the convoy to
Chevelle-a-bration in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. I'm sending this
email to the participants in the '08 convoy and some other folks to
get a head count.
Last year the travelling folks stayed at the Holiday Inn Express
Hotel Suites at 4306 McCain Blvd in North Little Rock. Here's the
website-
http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/litmb?rpb=hotelcrUrl=/h/d/hi/1/en/hotelsearchresults
This is a nice place with easy access to I-40 without any morning
rush hour traffic hassles. I can look for other places to stay if
you need me to.

The plan for now is to rendezvous with everyone at the Lonoke exit
around 9:30 AM and leave there at 10:00. If we keep our speed to
60~65 mph that will put us in Memphis around noon. We'll get some
lunch (is the Cajun Catfish Restaurant still OK??) and meet up with
the Memphis group and head on to Nashville.

Les Saville has graciously offered to feed us barbeque again at his
house on Tuesday night, June 2nd. Les's home is only a couple of
miles from the Holiday Inn, and he lives on a lightly travelled
street, so there won't be a problem driving your cars to his place
and parking there. He will need to know how many folks are coming by
Friday, May 22nd so he can get the food. Any of you semi-local guys
(Morrillton, Russellville, Conway, etc.) need to come over eat with
us even if you're not staying in NLR that night. Water and soft
drinks will be available, you're on your own for beer and other alcohol.

Please email or call me with any suggestions, my cell # is
501-425-8136 (leave a message, I don't have it on very often) shop #
is 501-868-5870, 9:30~5:30 Monday through Friday. I'll be posting
this on Team Chevelle in the I-40 thread in the Cruise-In Forum also.

Looking forward to a great time!!

I need to replace the 700r4 in my el camino. I need help in picking
the correct torque converter. The car is a cruiser - no racing but some
brisk acceleration at times. If I had to choose between an extra MPG vs an
extra second in the 1/4 mi, I'll take the MPG.

Am I correct in assuming that a low stall speed will be best choice. ?
Will a converter from the parts store serve me as well as one from BM or
TCI? Will there be a difference in a stock replacement for a 90 camaro vs
stock replacement for a 90 pickup? thx

[Chevelle-list] 67 shifting

2008-10-31 Thread Bill Bradley

Gentlemen and Ladies

Before I get those “check the forum section”, or the “check your factory
assembly book” replies. No, I haven”t done either yet. I'm going to ask for the
“been there done that” crowd! And links to the first option mentioned .

Background: 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu ( bench seat replaced with 99 Grand
Am electric bucket seats ), with a 283 2 barrel replaced with a 1984 305 topped
off with an Edlebrock Torker aluminum intake manifold and a Rochester 4 barrel.
Originally a powerglide, I'm now running a 700R4 overdrive (non electric)
column shifted. I have a spare steering column I've removed the shifter from
and filled the hole. I have an automatic transmission console, shifter and
shift cable. Yes, you've guessed it, while gutted, I want to convert it to a
floor shifted automatic with the console.
What I really hope to get are tips and tricks for this project, that and maybe
a template for cutting the hole for my shifter cable. I figure this is a great
winter project(heated garage). I wanted to get it done before installing sound
deadener , carpet seats, etc.
.
As I was saying, I'm getting ready to “gut” the cabin of the car, so any and
all help would be greatly appreciated!

[Chevelle-list] Long vs. Short Water pump

2008-07-19 Thread Bill

there and clearance problem?

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Long vs. Short Water pump

While 3-core or 4-core is a common term, radiators only have 1 core. It's
the number of cooling tubes you're concerned with. Due to size constraints
with either water pump setup I don't think you'll find a 4-tube aluminum
radiator; more likely a 2-tube design of 1-inch tubes.

A short water pump was used in 67. While you can use a later long pump it
will limit clearance with a thicker radiator and will require all the
brackets, braces, and pulleys for a long pump. Long pumps are 1.25 to 1.50
inches taller than short pumps.

I had a 69 engine in my 67 with a long pump and wound up with about 2-inches
between the fan and radiator after having to use a 1/2-inch fan spacer to
allow the fan blade clearance from the accessories. And that was with a
stock 3-row radiator.

With a 2-tube aluminum radiator (usually 2-inches thick; 2 rows of 1-inch
tubes) the space was cut to about 1/2-inch. Enough to cause one to have to
remove the radiator in order to get the fan off because there wasn't room to
get a wrench on the fan bolts. Any thicker radiator may cause clearance
problems.

If I were doing it over again, I'd use the short pump setup if you have
factory p/s, alt, A/C, brackets, braces and pulleys. I used a March system
that allowed for a later one-piece style p/s pump but it included all the
brackets and pulleys.

Re: [Chevelle-list] DISC BRAKE CONVERSION PART II + ignition ?

2008-06-28 Thread Bill Vander werf
Take out the #1 plug, put your finger over the plug hole and bump the motor
over until you feel air rushing out. That will tell you that the timing
pointer is on #1 compression stroke. The #6 hole and #1 are 180 degrees
apart in the firing order so compression for one is exhaust for the other.
Therefore, the timing pointer could be at 10 degrees but for #6 instead of
the #1 hole.

I hope I didn't make it more confusing.

A one wire alternator won't charge until the first time the motor reaches
1800 to 2000 RPM but I believe he said he had an alternator with an external
regulator.

I agree with the others who said to check connections and the belt. If that
doesn't fix the problem it's time to have the alternator checked out by a
repair shop.

I think some alternators dont charge at idle, but if you hit the gas they
do. That may be why the light comes on.

Hopefully the motor hasn't been bored yet because these pistons
require tighter clearances than standard aluminum pistons and be

[Chevelle-list] I-40 Eastbound Convoy

It's May 3rd, time to begin the planning for the convoy to
Chevelle-a-bration in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. I'm sending this
email to the participants in the '06 convoy and some other folks to
get a head count and to tell ya'll about a new event happening
Tuesday night in North Little Rock.
Last year the travelling folks stayed at the Holiday Inn Express
Hotel Suites at 4306 McCain Blvd in North Little Rock. Here's the
website-
http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/litmb?rpb=hotelcrUrl=/h/d/hi/1/en/hotelsearchresults
This is a nice place with easy access to I-40 without any morning
rush hour traffic hassles.
The plan for now is to leave the motel a 9:00 AM on Wednesday June
4th. If we keep our speed to 60~65 mph that will put us in Memphis
around noon. We'll get some lunch (is the Cajun Catfish Restaurant
still OK??) and meet up with the Memphis group and head on to Nashville.

Les Saville has graciously offered to feed us barbeque brisket, pork
butt, and chicken with the fixings at his house on Tuesday night,
June 3rd. Les's home is only a couple of miles from the Holiday Inn,
and he lives on a lightly travelled street, so there won't be a
problem driving your cars to his place and parking there. He will
need to know how many folks are coming by Friday, May 16th so he can
get the food. Any of you semi-local guys (Morrillton, Russellville,
Conway, etc.) need to come over eat with us even if you're not
staying in NLR that night. Water and soft drinks will be available,
you're on your own for beer and other alcohol.

Please email or call me with any suggestions, my cell # is
501-425-8136 (leave a message, I don't have it on very often) shop #

camber and -3 degrees caster on both sides. There were no shims in
the front arm bolt and about 1/4~5/16 shim stack on the rear
bolt. All of the control arm bushings are worn out and will be
replaced, along with the ball joints. I'd like to get some positive
caster in the car, and I was wondering if the offset shafts will give
you caster gain as well as fixing camber? I'm OK with 0~1/4 degree
camber, but more caster will help stabilize the steering. TIA,

  Hey Guys

I did a front power disk brake conversion on my '71 Chevelle. Everything fit
together very well and looks as it should. My problem is I can't bleed the rear
brakes. I can crack the brake lines ahead of the wheel cylinders, and get fluid
when the pedal is pumped, but can not get any air or fluid out of the bleeders
on either rear wheel cylinder. I have completely removed the bleeder valves to
look for an obstruction of some sort, and they are clear. The visible portion
of the needle valve on the proportioning valve block does extend slightly when
the brakes are activated, but it only moves about a 1/16th of an inch. Is this
the way they are supposed to work ? The kit came with a new proportioning valve
for front disk/rear drum brakes that is supposed to be correct for all GM A
bodies of this era. I suspect this to be the problem, but don't know how to
test it. Any ideas ? I am stumped.

I have been able to answer my own questions. The valve spring compressor
works great.Comp Cams tech support said to the soak the Teflon seals in
WD-40 for a couple of hours. It worked very well - They swelled enough to
slip over the stem. I just hope they unswell when the job is done.
The major thing that stopped the install was the valve retainer locks.
They are the wrong ones. They allow the retainer to be level with the top
of the valve stem. Those locks are +.050. I talked to Edelbrock tech and
they said I need -.050 locks. So there went another $35. plus. Can any
one tell me if the difference is .050 or .100 in the retainer height?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Cam choice?

2008-02-20 Thread Bill Vander Werf
I'm not familiar with what Edelbrock advertises their cams as. I was looking at
the specs on the two cams relative to each other. The cam you picked has more
lift (0.560 int./0.573 exh.) and duration @ .050 (240 int./246 exh.) as well as
a smaller (112) lobe separation angle. The cam I suggested has less lift (0.527
int./0.553 exh.) and duration @ .050 (224 int./232 exh.) and a wider (114) lobe
separation angle. The wider LSA would give you more manifold vacuum to power
things like power brakes and AC vacuum operated servos. All these factors would
make the cam I suggested milder, or more street friendly, than your first
choice.

Like I said before; either cam would work, it all depends on what you want out
of the car. Neither cam is a radical cam by any stretch of the imagination
but another thing you have to consider is cubic inches. A 402 is a small big
block. A larger engine (454 or larger) absorbs some of the personality of a
larger cam simply because it moves more air. What is lumpy in a 454 is much
more so in a 402.

There are other cams available too. I just stayed within the Edelbrock line to
keep things simple. Cam choice is probably the single most confusing aspect of
engine building. I wasn't intentionally trying to confuse the issue with you
but that is just what seems to happen when you are trying to make the correct
cam choice.

Although I think your cam choice would work, I believe it's at the far end
of what I would put in a daily driver street car.

It really depends on what you want. Do you want a car to show off? Is a
lumpy idle is more important than practicality? If that's what you want, then I
think it's a good choice.

Do you want more practicality and drivability? I can only imagine what you
pay for gas where you are. Let's face it, a big block isn't going to get very
good gas mileage by today's standards anyway, but is economy important to you?
If it is, go a little smaller.

If you are building a daily driver then my philosophy is this; less is more
when it comes to cams. A lumpy idle is cool but a smaller cam will give you
more power where you can use it...in the lower to mid-range.

Even in drag racing less can be more. I have a 3600 pound 71 that runs
11.50s with a Crane 224/236 @ .050 hydraulic roller in a 461 (.030 over 454).
Most people don't believe that's all the cam I have in it. I think it works as
good as it does because it gives me the bottom end power to get a heavy car
moving.

Staying within the Edelbrock line, I would recommend this cam for your
application:

For bigger items though I find that FedEx Ground has better rates than

I have a package place about a block and a half away that I just drop

Don't forget about the new USPS 13-ounce rule (any package over 13

Re: [Chevelle-list] MSD question O/T

2008-01-20 Thread Bill Vander Werf
I have a MSD 6AL unit in my 71 with a big block. I opened up the gap to .050.
The only issue I came across is if you don't use a pliers type plug gapper you
can't get the ground electrode square to the center electrode. The larger gap
gives you the benefit of a larger spark kernel and a more efficient burn. The
fat spark generated by the MSD ignition could jump a hundred thousandths gap
without a blink. However, I'm talking about a full MSD, or equivalent, ignition
system...box, coil, distributor and wires, not a box used with stock parts.

Here is a link with some useful information:

If you do it this way be absolutely sure to tape up the rear edge of the

took time.
And finally, on my 72 at least, I it looks like I could have rebuilt the
lower hinge without completely removing the door. But it was impossible to
reinstall the hinge pin on the upper because of interference with the door
sheetmetal. Lastly, if you do rebuild yours, make sure that the flutes
at the head of the hinge pin are not too long. They should only be long
enough that they engage the metal of the hinge not pass into the
bushing. If I find my camera I'll post pictures.

Hey all here is a good one. Not long after I got the 71 the car wouldn't start
I just figured it was the fact the positive end of the soleniod was loose or
the crappy battery terminals, which I am not ruling out yet. Anyway today I
jerked the starter off and fixed the soleniod. I tried the key and it bumped
over for a second then quit. Then I tried the lights, nothing. So I thought bad
connection, I wiggled the wires and checked the fuses and nothing. So tomorrow
I'm off to buy some terminals. Any other ideas in case that don't work? Anyway
thanks in advance.

[Chevelle-list] 1967 Chevelle power brake conversion

2007-12-29 Thread Bill Bradley
Hey Folks
I've got a 67 Malibu (former rust bucket) with non power drum brakes. i was
fortunate a couple years ago to pick up the parts for a front disk conversion.
I'd gotten the disks and calipers installed with allot of help from Rick
Schaefer ( thanks again Rick). the conversion made a world of difference in
braking but i always wanted to convert to power brakes. i picked up a booster
(i forget where) and have just gotten around to installing it today. my first
question is has anyone done this conversion before? I'm sure someone has. is
there a tech section article on this swap? did you have any problems? I'm
having a heck of a time getting the return spring back on. i used the push rod
that came with the booster, i hope i don't have to pull this all back down and
swap any parts.
something tells me i should have done this with the seats out of the car

Re: [Chevelle-list] NPG or Supplier in Ocala

2007-11-21 Thread Bill
Jim,

This week - through Sunday - there is one of the largest car show / swap
meets in the Southeast at Daytona Speedway. All of the Chevelle suppliers
tend to show up and have parts to sell.

Is there a NPG or one of the other big suppliers located in Ocala Fl

I need to get a set of fenders and thought that would be the closest
place.

  Thanks,

  Jim

It's not one of those toys that I'd be embarrassed to buy is it?? If
it is, I have a high school buddy who owns two special toy shops
where I can get it for you. My friend has made over the
years selling that stuff. :-P

It is a neat toy and not available in Canada. Please Email me off
list if you can help. Hopefully someone close to border.
