Some BW big musical dance thing... she knew all the actors the composer the set designer..I sat an enjoyed it with her. I hear and respect what your saying Brad. But #1 was all cool we spent many a date night not at the movies but replacing a blown BW 4 speed ( muncies were rare and cost $$ more in 65 ) or lowly drop out tri five rear gears.. It was not till i got back from the Pond did the worm turn... I could blame it on the sign of the times. ( finding ones self ) Peer Pressure ALL her Collage friends Being a vet I was like treated like a leaper. When I met my first wife, I had a 77 Z/28, 350, 10:1,
286 cam, roller valvetrain, Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads, Pete Jackson
gear drive, Performer RPM, Performer Carb, TCI Streetfighter 350 trans,
BM Holeshot convertor, 3.73 rear, MSD, all that. Man she hated
that car! She *constantly* harped on me, saying the car stank and was
too noisy. There wasn't a day that went by that she didn't holler at
me about the car.
The current wife is much more supportive so far, but I'm still a bit
hesitant to see how she'll handle the time it'll take to put in to
it.
Anyone have any tips on how to balance not putting in too much time
with also trying to avoid hearing the inevitable "that thing is an eyesore,
why is it just sitting there?"

To me, the joy comes from knowing I'm eventually going to touch every nut and bolt on this car. I plan on doing the "resto-rod" thing - making it look mostly stock, except for a few upgrades to the interior such as seats and dash stuff. All best are off for the drive train, suspension, and breaks though. Anyway, enough babbling from me. I'm very glad to have found this list. The two main problems are the roof is completely rusted underneath the vinyl top. The whole roof will need to be transplanted. The second issue is the steering column must be completely screwed up, because you basically have to "hot wire" the car to drive it. For the price I paid, I'm psyched to have it. The point, to me, of owning an old car is to work on it. I'm not the kind of guy who wants to have the car already done for him. To me, the joy comes from knowing I'm eventually going to touch every nut and bolt on this car. I plan on doing the "resto-rod" thing - making it look mostly stock, except for a few upgrades to the interior such as seats and dash stuff. All best are off for the drive train, suspension, and breaks though. Anyway, enough babbling from me. I'm very glad to have found this list. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one! LOL! When I met my first wife, I had a 77 Z/28, 350, 10:1, 286 cam, roller valvetrain, Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads, Pete Jackson gear drive, Performer RPM, Performer Carb, TCI Streetfighter 350 trans, BM Holeshot convertor, 3.73 rear, MSD, all that. Man she hated that car! She *constantly* harped on me, saying the car stank and was too noisy. There wasn't a day that went by that she didn't holler at me about the car. The current wife is much more supportive so far, but I'm still a bit hesitant to see how she'll handle the time it'll take to put in to it. Anyone have any tips on how to balance not putting in too much time with also trying to avoid hearing the inevitable "that thing is an eyesore, why is it just sitting there?" Karl, My 'new' wife grew up with an older brother and his friends in rural South Carolina... she knows that boys like to 'play cars'. So long as we get to spend some time together during the week, she knows that I need time to myself in the shop, and sometimes I need other friends to come over so we can 'play cars and motorcycles' and during especially geeky times, 'play computers'. Gosh, Are you sure Y'all first wives was not my first wife sisters ! Got married B-4 I went across the big pond 1966.( thank you Uncle sam ) Spent the next 14 years in a battle over mostly my Cars.. Only time she liked them is when I sold one or got a pay day from doing work ( i was rebuilding corvettes and doing repair/upgrade work besides my regular job) IN a last ditch effort to save our relationship.. I sold my 37 chevy Coupe,56 Chevy Nomad,56 Chevy HT and 67 Corvette. Well. 13 months later I came home to an empty home. No $$$ in the bank and 10 months of unpaid bill and maxed out credit card's plue lowest of lows, the Bitch even hall-ed off my duel Snap on roller cabinet and all my tools [EMAIL PROTECTED]( another 4 years of payment to the Snap on Man and no tools) My 2nd Love 24 years and going strong. understands nothing about cars. or Electronics ( my other hobby) but then again I understand nothing about Art. You just have to start them out like I did. I
picked my (now) wife up for our first date in my buddy's 1970 Z/28 with 3"
Simpson belts as my daily driver was a '69 Dart. I already had the
Corvette, and I bought the Chevelle within a few months of meeting
her.
She knew what she was getting into, and if she could
survive the Beast of the Camaro, then everything else was no problem.
Since then, we have driven around town (http://epage.com/brad/socalus.jpg)to
Laughlin (in the summer), Sedona (http://epage.com/brad/sedonavette.jpg),
Monterey, and other long hauls in both the Corvette and Chevelle. Many
early trips were taken to Santa Barbara and Cambria (up hwy 1 near Hearst
Castle) in the Chevelle as her Toyota was too small for me to sit in for
long.

When I met my first wife, I had a 77 Z/28, 350, 10:1, 286
cam, roller valvetrain, Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads, Pete Jackson gear
drive, Performer RPM, Performer Carb, TCI Streetfighter 350 trans, BM
Holeshot convertor, 3.73 rear, MSD, all that. Man she hated that
car! She *constantly* harped on me, saying the car stank and was too
noisy. There wasn't a day that went by that she didn't holler at me
about the car.
The
current wife is much more supportive so far, but I'm still a bit hesitant to
see how she'll handle the time it'll take to put in to it.
Anyone have any tips on how to balance not putting in too much time
with also trying to avoid hearing the inevitable "that thing is an eyesore,
why is it just sitting there?"

A huge amount of information about Chevelles will be found at www.chevelles.com/forums and www.chevellestuff.com Use the search function you will find most of what you're looking for, and when you don't, post a question in the appropriate place. We help each other on this list too, but it's not as large as Team Chevelle. The cowl tag for your car, located on the driver's side under the hood will give a little more information than the VIN which is what you posted. All I know for sure from the VIN is it's a 1971 V-8 2 door sport coupe that was built in Baltimore. BillL

The roof is pretty near impossible to get and there is not much room to work near those seams where they tend to rot out. You will need a really good body shop or you may want to reconsider your purchase. There are always cars out there and in many cases people find that the cost of putting it back together will always outweigh what they can get for it. But, if it is a labor of love and your mission then you don't worry about the cost. Anything can be fixed and maintained well enough to keep it looking great. Ditto to Bill's suggested links. I've been a member of Team Chevelle for over 7 yrs (http://www.chevelles.com/forums) and I own/manage the http://www.chevellestuff.com site with gobs of decoding information on 64-72 Chevelles. As Bill said, the only thing the VIN tells you is a Chevrolet (1) V8 (36) Malibu 2-dr sport coupe (37), 1971 (1), Baltimore (B), with a sequence number of 202451 making it the 102,451st 71 Chevelle (all models) built at Baltimore that year. The Fisher Body plate on the top of the cowl should give you a body date, trim code and paint codes. If the engine is original to the car, my site also has the suffix codes. wecome karl, i am a bodyman who has manny restorations under my belt and am the owner of a 72 ss chevelle conv. of 15 years witch i truly love and wouldn't sell for no reason .lol but as to your problem with your roof i am tring something different i bought my son a 73 nova virtually rust free except for the darn roof putting a used roof on will be extreamly time consuming and hard to find/expensive so i am going to try the por-15 method we only have a few small holes and por-15 had a primer,body filler and a patch so unless you have the rear window/ front windsheild gutter problems im gonna give it a try i will coat the outside as well as inside with the treatment as to be sure of it not coming back im going to be putting a showroom paint job on this car so i am putting a lot of faith into this and havent heard as of any one on the list tring this route but would appreciate any feedback form others who have done this roof experament i belive in por15 as i have used it in other applications but not on the vinyil top conversion aspect so ill let ya know how it works and wecome to a great comminity Darin Bailey

swithing 69 chevelle, from small to big block. have old but hardly used balanced clutch. just in my way. if someone needs it they can have it. need advice on using roller rockers in 454, what valve covers will clear rockers and brake booster. mr bill

It was a originally a three on the three and a 307, replaced with a 305 and a M-22 (acc to the seller). Strange combination, but there was a nice sound from the gearbox L Well it was supposed to be a rolling project, have you heard it before?? I was looking for a fiberglass clip-on front, they are available for Chevelles but not for Caminos, finally I met a guy who promised to build one for me if he could borrow the fenders. So since that weekend, its not a rolling project. I sold the 305 almost a give away, took a look at the M-22, which was a M-21. The nice sound was the need for a complete restoration .. The 350 4-bolt I had in the garage is now stroked, bored and prepared for a charger. Just need the money for a Vortech charger. The car has been moved to the body shop, and will soon be a frame off. The frame is supposed to be powder-coated and the front drum brakes will be replaced with discs. Here is my first question to you; I have bought the 2 drop spindles, should I use standard springs or also lower springs? Well honestly this is the first time I restore a car so drastically, so it will take time for me to complete it, both time and money wise. Welcome to the List,Hans. Glad to have another Elky lover aboard. Looks like you have your work cut out for you but it's a good start,nonetheless. If I might make a suggestion,forget about a fiberglass front end and stick with steel. Glass front ends aren't really good for anything but racecars,IMO. As for your drop-spindle and spring question,a 2drop is quite a bit so I probably wouldn't go with more than a 1 drop spring. I kinda felt guilty when Jim discontinued the newsletters because of health and declining subscriptions, because my Challenger list was growing like crazy. It's amazing how many people I run into on the Net that I knew from other organizations I've either managed or belonged to. The internet really has made the world a much smaller place. I quit flying and sold my Challenger when my wife suffered her first stroke. We had to sell off a lot of our toys and change our priorities. Everything happens for a reason,though. To tell you the truth, just about any way you wanted to put it on would be correct. On the line in 68-69 they just grabbed a spray gun and started shooting. AFAIK that is exactly right. There was no exact science behind spraying the trunks. In fact, on some of the full-size and deluxe models that got carpeted trunks from the factory, the spatter paint was not used at all because it was an extra step that would be covered up anyway. I have been told that on my Olds the inside of the trunk was painted the same as the body color because it came fully carpeted and that allowed them to pull it off the paint line sooner. Well thank you all again for the great welcome I live in North Carolina, In the past I have restore a 67 Firebird, 70 GTO Judge, and now my first full frame off restoration 69 chevelle I have finished the frame, and I am presently painting the bottom, hopefully by next week I will have the body back on the frame I am hoping to build a very close to #1 car at least that is my hope. My biggest problem is finding enough info on certain details such as markings on the cowl etc.okay I own a Fast Food restaurant in Raleigh and I do a monthly cruise-in. I get about 50 - 75 cars. Wow Great thank you all for the nice welcome Presently I am in the process this weekend of painting the bottom of my car, after which I will do the trunk and then interior floor boards. Hopefully in a week or so I will put the body back onto the frame. I did have a question. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I'm saving a 1971 Chevelle SS 454 LS5 car. It sat for a long time, motor was cannibalized, not tranni. It has the original rear end. Rust was everywhere. I paid $500 for the car and towed it home for another $120. The car was in real bad shape when I got it. It would be very very expensive to bring back to its original glory. I don't think the body is even worth trying. Lots of Bondo on just about every panel. The frame appears to be straight and free from incident however. It has the original 12-bolt posi in it that also looks good. The car has been completely sanded, the entire front end dismantled and the reconstructive surgery has begun. The entire trunk was rusted out and a new trunk w/ pan for a fuel cell has been welled in. A bit more bondo has most of the body panels in good shape. The front fenders have been replaced with fiberglass ones. A 4 3/4 cowl fiberglass hood is going on as are fiberglass bumpers and deck lid. Next up is a 10 point roll cage and Corbeau racing seats w/ 5 point harnesses. (I hope to live to see my 25th birthday) I have a 1971 Camino round gage dash for it w/ out tach (Can't afford the $400-$500 people want for an original tach dash). I have a newly rebuilt M-21 going in it which should be alright until my job pays a bit more for a Richmond Gear 6-speed (my dream transmission). In terms of power I plan on doing something a bit unconventional. I am looking for a 502 block to make a 540 out of (4.25 Eagle forged crank, 4.5 bore). It will be a low compression motor running inexpensive iron heads. An EFI system is definitely in the works (maybe Electromotive if it can be afforded). This will be complete with water injection. Then one large turbo will be hooked up hopefully running 8-12#s of boost. The goal is to have around 850HP at the crank. That said I am sure I will have drivetrain problems but I figure I'll deal with those when I come to them. Hopefully the 12-bolt will withstand the power minus the turbo, when the turbo goes on a 4 link w/ big center section will be needed I imagine. Well there's a little summary of ym car. I will get you guys some pictures soon when the body work is finished or maybe after I prime it. If anyone has any advice please feel free to comment. In that case here goesmine is a very nice 350 based '70 Elky. It's got/had factory air and everything is there except the compressor. Are there any good websites or books on how to restore an air conditioner system for these things ? It's pretty hot in the truck during the summer as it doesn't have the cool kick panel vents that my '73 Nova has. Any restoration tips would be greatly appreciated. It's a middle of the road restore case from what I have seen, but has lots of typical rust for a midwest car. I noticed that there are plenty of replacement parts available, and some buddys offered to teach me to weld them in, as well as offer the use of their welding equipment. I hope to be able to control that and keep it to a minimum, speeding tickets are expensive ;) I hope to only drive it to work occasionally, special occasions, warm summer nights, and cruise-in's. I don't plan on competing in large shows against guys that have a lot more money than me. Right now it has a stock mid 80's 350 in it, but I think that will have to be replaced with a 396 or reasonable facsimile thereof ;) I also plan to replace the auto-magic with a 4 speed. Replace the bench with buckets, and put in a console. I know, a lot of modifications, and why didn't I just leave it as it is or buy a diffrent car? Well I WANT a 4 speed, and for the shape it's in, the price was about right and maybe as cheap as I can get started and still have something to work with. I am aware that it won't be original or as valuable to collectors or purists. I am building this car for ME !!! Not anyone else. I currently own two 1968 Oldsmobiles and I recently rescued a 69 El Camino from a junkyard. It had no motor or transmission (originally came with a 350 2-spd powerglide), but it is a very straight, low-rust body and frame. You can see a picture of what it looked like the day I found it at: Cool Elky...good project starter. So, here's the question. I know a guy selling two Q-jet carburetors: 17057216 AWT 3256 and 17080298 1952 DNO I believe the first one is a 1977 casting number and the second is probably a 1983 casting. Does anybody know how many CFMs these are and whether or not either of them will work on a stock cast-iron late 60s (no-EGR) SB intake manifold? Not sure of the CFM's, but the '83 carb will need a computer to operate well. Take the '77...less headaches! Greg says that indeed the later carb requires a computer, but he also said that even the earlier of the two would have smaller jets and different linkages than a correct late-60s Q-jet. I need the old style with manual choke and a vacuum port on the bottom. If anybody needs those later carbs (cheap), contact Mike Stillwell at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Just for FYIs Mike is in the auto transport business, based in Northern VA area. Sparky's Carb Service comes highly recommended for both his work and his customer service. I have not used him myself but I know people who have and everybody raves about his work. The guy who is selling the two Q-jets said he would snap some digital pictures tonight and send them to me. I should be able to tell from the pictures whether or not they will bolt up, but he doesn't know how many CFMs they are. He is not asking a whole lot, so maybe I'll take my chances. The only down-side is that the longer I take to get this carb thing sorted out, the longer the car sits, and I'm anxious to get it running. I was going to buy a new Carter AFB 600 CFM from Jegs for about $200, but if one of these used ones will work, I can save a lot of $$. To answer Tim's question, I live in Brooklyn, NY but I found the El Camino in Charlotte, NC and towed it back on a trailer. It seems some guy bought it as a running car just to pull the 350 out and rebuild it for an 85 Camaro. Then he junked the body. What a fool to pick apart a running, numbers-matching classic! Then the guy at the yard sold the transmission, which at that point was less of a loss. If I could have, I would have paid the original guy not to pull the motor. I'm sure there are plenty of 350s out there in wrecked cars that he could have rebuilt. It does have all of the emblems on it, although some of them should be replaced. Gonna make another trip tomorrow night, then one more week in Big Dbefore departing for the Ranch for the duration. My Elky needs a new carb...five years is good for an Edelbrock 600 I hear...gonna have to wait til we get settled though...no time to change it now. Other than that, it's running good.
