Given that I have a long water pump and all modern
brackets on my 1958 block, it seems like all of the SBC brackets are
interchangeable. I don't know of any significant change from a 1968 350 to a
1970 350 in terms of brackets, but I plan to put one on my '70. That's a little
ways down the road though. Right now it doesnt even have an engine in it.

By get rid of, if you mean free

I just put Air Ride on a '68 and did the
extra work to COMPLETELY tuck the bags up as high as possible.
When all the air dumps out of the system, the car sits on a 1/2 inch
rake, with only 1 1/4 inches of clearance from the skid plate in the
front to the ground.

I used Hedman's Elite series header that
they call a "shorty". They look similar to the Patriots, but use a
thicker flange and one size larger guage for the tubing. They fit
well, and there is plenty of clearance from the ground when all the air
is out of the bags.

2006-04-23 Thread Larry Shouse

Since I have a BBC, it might not be exactly the
same, but I went through something very similar. I bought a set of Sanderson for
my 396. I did have a clearance issue with the BBC driver's side alternator
bracket. I ended up grinding off the bottom part of the bracket just below the
bolt hole so both the header flange and bracket could both be mounted properly.
It works well, and it seems strong as ever. The alternative would have been to
grind on my coated headers, and I didn't want to do that!

Block huggers and shorties are the same thing and
are considered a 1/2 header. These headers are designed for streetrods and will
not clear the crossmembers on our cars. Sanderson others make full-length
and intermediate (3/4) headers.
BH or shorty header collectors usually end right
around the motor mount area. Intermediate collectors usually end right around
the bottom of the oil pan or firewall. Full-length collectors obviously end up
under the car,somewhere.

Whats the requirement for the
collector dump (CC10) at the firewall instead of straight down (CC12)? Automatic

I've built a few streetrods in my day,Denny, and
here's what most of us in the industry call a blockhugger. (notwithstanding
Sanderson's terminology) http://www.sandersonheaders.com/pagesbypartnum/cc1.htm
You would think the header makers could get their terminology standardized.
Funny thing is,when I called Sanderson to order some of the blockhuggers, the
salesman said "Oh,what you want are some of our intermediates". Heck,I
give up. grin

Because the straight down collector won't clear the
crossmember. Also, some of the intermediate collectors will not clear the Z-bar
on manual trans cars. Sandersons will but IknowPatriots will not.
I'm trying to remember why that was important because my 68 El Camino had a
700R4 auto, not a manual trans. My 69 El Camino now has full-length headers but
they tuck uppretty well.
To give you an idea how low my car will go with the
Air Ride, the header collectors are touching the ground when I let all the air
out.

I just put Air Ride on a '68 and did the extra work
to COMPLETELY tuck the bags up as high as possible. When all the air dumps
out of the system, the car sits on a 1/2 inch rake, with only 1 1/4 inches of
clearance from the skid plate in the front to the ground.

I used Hedman's Elite series header that they call
a "shorty". They look similar to the Patriots, but use a thicker flange
and one size larger guage for the tubing. They fit well, and there is
plenty of clearance from the ground when all the air is out of the
bags.

Just a suggestion but I would take a look at
Sanderson's intermediate headers. I installed a pair of them on my 68 El Camino

claim) - are these worth the extra money? do they really make a diffrence?
i know in drag racing every little bit helps- but how about for a
mostly street-some drag?

thanks!!

Mark,

you should look into stainless works as well, I bought their weldup kit, nice
stuff!

 Tom,
I contacted Doug's and Pertronix did purchase them. Jegs is handling their
 headers.
I contacted Jegs and they do have Doug's headers, but they do not list the set
specifically for the 64-67 chevelles, #D322. They are checking to see if they
 are
available. Thanks to everyone who responded.

I was looking for Doug's headers on the web the other day, and the web
site said they were sold to Pertronix. At the Pertronix site, there was
very little information that I could find on Doug's headers. However, on
the Pypes site, they seem to offer Doug's headers, and have an on-line
 catalog.

Where do you get Doug's headers these days?

2005-04-24 Thread Dan Mascheck
I called Jet Hot about sand blasting and coating. The price was half the
cost of a new set of ceramics from Hooker. If I could find someone that
would coat my old ones in the Houston area..I might try it!

Houston is awful large and with all the refineries we have you would surely
think someone ceramic coats in the area!

About two years, so that probably not long enough to tell anytihng (not like
I run around in a weather much with it).. But I bought them from a guy that
dig the ceramic coating, so Hooker did not coat them. They look like they
will hold up fine, but time will tell.

Oh, one thing on fit for my car - I also had to dimple one tube for steering
clearance.

I went a different route for my headers with the recommendation from my
cousin who had used them on 383 647hp with great results.

Sanderson Headers. I had clearance problems with the header that were on
the car when I bought it. They were too close to the steering column and
the frame causing rubbing and contact during driving not to mention a
nightmare to remove and install them. With the Sanderson I definitely
noticed a performance difference the first time I drove the car, and I now
have easy access to the plugs and all kinds of room between the steering
column and the frame. One thing they provide is very easy removal and
installation. I bought them coated and they look great. They are very
expensive though maybe two to three time that of Hooker.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Headers

2005-04-23 Thread Ron Sparks
About two years, so that probably not long enough to tell anytihng (not like
I run around in a weather much with it).. But I bought them from a guy that
dig the ceramic coating, so Hooker did not coat them. They look like they
will hold up fine, but time will tell.

Oh, one thing on fit for my car - I also had to dimple one tube for steering
clearance.

Ron,

How long have you had the ceramic Hookers? Any rust yet?? It surprised me
when the Hooker Rep told they would rust! I'm sure under very adverse
conditions...but he told me up front!!

I've got coated Hookers on my 454 in the '66 and am fairly happy with them.
I do think they hang a little low, but I have never dragged them, so I'm
probably ok. Putting some Hotchkis springs up front today and I'm going to
take some careful measurements

I had my 4 or 5 year old headers ceramic coated in 1997. I have
not yet noticed any rust or other corrrosion. You might have to buy
non-coated headers have them done by a shop that specializes in the
coating.

Good luck
finding someone to make custom headers. I can't find anyone within 150
miles that makes custom headers anymore. If you live in a lower rent area,
maybe you can find them, but in metro areas the shop can make more money doing
catalytic converters and standard installs all day than taking a few days to
make something custom.
If anyone
knows a shop in Southern California that still makes custom headers, let me

Re: [Chevelle-list] Headers suggestions

2005-01-17 Thread 65ss.com

I have not had a set of headers that I did not HAVE
to ding. I have a '65 with a 502 in it, and 2" primaries and had to
persuade (with a hammer, and piece of wood) them in. Buy the uncoated,
beat em up a bit then have them coated. You do not lose performance by
dinging them up. It generally makes the tubes flatter, but does not
actually decrease the inside diameter. If you were to drastically bend
them, or kink them, only then would you increase the inside diameter of the
pipe.

So, basically, no matter what you buy, you will
probably end up hammering them a bit. On a side note, I also put in 3"
exhaust from pypesperformance.com and it is absolutely awesome. I bought
the Pypes mufflers, and the X crossover with cutouts. Has a real good
throaty sound through the mufflers, but fairly quiet. Not obnoxious like a
big block through Flowmasters. I wanted that 'sleeper' sound with good
performance, and managed the both..

Since you have a stock engine I would suggest you buy the 1 7/8 tube Super

what you need most in a stock or slightly modified street engine.

I've since found out that Stahl is designing

A question to the fellow header-users out there...

Is it pretty much a rule of thumb to have to use a
starter heat shield if you have headers? I keep
having problems starting my motor after it's been run
for a while, but if I give it a few hours and fires
right up. I'm pretty certain that it's the starter
getting hot, but this is my first time having headers
on an SBC and wondered if it was a common problem.

 Thanks,

I wore out my starter using headers and no heat shield. I put on a heat
shield when I replaced the starter and so far, no problems. I figure it
can't do anything but help the situation as far as helping to preserve

I find this whole issue fascinating actually- how
does the heat actually destroy the starter, when it
does nothing but sit there? Does it damage the
solenoid? Never thought heat would do that.

closer to the starter. (I guess)

Diane,
I heard that a heat shield is just another heat conductor and if you have the problem now, then it would just be a matter of time until the heat problem would rear its ugly head again that is, unless the shield is made of some special material.

RE: [Chevelle-list] headers and heat shields

2003-07-31 Thread Tom Tomlinson

I had
a starter heat problem with my old headers (Hooker), which were 1/4" from the
starter on by 350 Malibu (stock starter). The starter would not engagein
hotweather after being run. Occasionally Icould get itto work
if the solenoid was hit when the ignition was on (a two person job + a big
stick).
Last
winter I replaced my headers, and put aheat shield fromSummit on the
same starter/solenoid. No problems this year. The fact that the new headers are
farther from the starter probably helps as well.

Well, speaking from years of owning chevys I can tell
you heat shields are a good investment. I had the same problem with several cars
and it went away instantly after adding the shield. Don't believe me? call "Mega

do just that. they shield from heat. hence the name ;-D, take it from the pros.

I'd bet Mega torque could get you one. Thanks, I appreciate
your thoughts. I just try to help. I'm new here, but I have loved Chevelles for
as long as I can remember. And yeah, the people here are great. I think this
chevelle-list is allot of fun. I admit I don't know it all, and big blocks
aren't my norm. I like to hear the mouse motors roar, guess I'm a sucker for the
underdog. After reading all today's posts I went out and stamped my vin # on my
frame. Can't be too safe nowadays. I'm going to look into etching the # on the
glass too. I figure why not, it can't hurt, and car thieves need to be
deturred(misspelled?) anyway good luck with that big block. I think header
distance from the starter might have some bearing too. Its your first musclecar?
Oh I envy you. Its a special feeling owning one. or should I say being owned by
one guys? I feel like the fifth wheel here, but being an ornery redhead with two
big brothers I feel right at home. Well, back to the
garagePep.

 Greetings,

I'm looking at a set of Hedman Elite Headers for the big
 block in my 1967 SS
396 and was wondering if anyone knew how to tell if a power
 steering box is a
Saginaw unit? Hedman's website indicates the 64-67 Chevelle
 big block headers
won't fit vehicles with Saginaw power steering boxes.
 Personally, I don't
really see how a P/S box could be a problem on a 66-67
 Chevelle - the only
header tube that comes close is no. 1 and my current no name
 headers have no
problem getting by the P/S box. Does anybody have any
 insight on this or have
a set of Hedman 1-3/4 headers or equivalent brand on their big block?

 Thanks,
