IMO the retro look is getting kinda old for me. Seems to me that alot of
American vehicles have lost their glamour with some of the public so this
retro motion is trying to get some consumers back from foriegn cars.I
think the V6/4 banger fwd motion was decided back in the early to mid-80's
when gas mileage became bigger and fwd allowed manufactures to produce smaller
cars with more room as they could eliminate the driveshaft bump. Also to add
to it... fwd cars are much nicer to drive in the winter up north here and also
if you haven't noted are much more expensive on the labor side of things to
fix as they are more cramped in the engine bay. I like many of them... but IMO
they hold way too much of the market share and the rwd and awd options hold
far too little. I also agree that this is probably part of the reason for the
  who truck/suv craze.
I personally do love the GTO concept... and that is because for the first
time in a good 10-20 years you can get a 2 door sedan that actually has a
semi-usable back seat with V8 power and even a manual. That flat out rocks!
Also since we are on new cars... look at the hp battles begining again...
Hemi's, 390hp Cobra mustangs, the GTO is going to have a 405 hp LS6 option,
and if the websites are correct the 2005 Lightning could have 500 hp! I guess
I will say enjoy it while it lasts...

I recently subscribed to the list and have enjoyed reading the many emails, although some are really technical for me. Are there any girl owners in the Chevelle List? I own a 1966 Chevelle Malibu, black exterior/black interior, with a holley carb, 327 small block, has a snowflake exh. manifold. 4 speed manual, saginaw trans. Supposedly it has a 1966 Covette engine in it - I'll let you know what the numbers are so someone can let me know if it really is. Have owned it about 10 years now. Used to do alot of work on it myself, but I've found a mechanic I trust to work on it. It's a fun car. Ann

Gary,

Any chance you're looking for engine parts? I have a '64 4-bbl intake (E 5 4
date, 3844459 casting) and a set of ordinary small-valve (1.72/1.50) heads
taking up space in my basement. Even if you don't need them the mere fact that
you have a '64 makes them more valuable to you than to me. I work at FABCO so
shipping would be, uh, non-existent. ;^) Email me offlist at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
if you're interested. Will consider trades for Pontiac parts and/or Pizza
Extreme pizza. ;^)

Was this a local acquisition? I read the State Journal classifieds somewhat
regularly and don't recall seeing a '64 convertible recently. What's the story?

Since you're in the area I assume you're aware of the Jefferson swap meet and
the other events put on by Madison Classics. Keep an eye on
www.jeffersonswapmeet.com for info.

Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] new list member

Sounds like you have a 67 rear end. The reason I suspect a 67 as opposed to a 64-66 is the way the springs mount. I had a 68-72 rear in my 67 and finally swapped it out a couple of years ago for a 67 unit and nothing else was changed - springs, brake lines, u-joint, shocks, etc.

* 1964-67 Chevelle rear ends were manufactured by the Chevrolet Gear and Axle Division. The housing measures 56.5 inches from flange to flange, and with the brake drums in place, the total width is 60.5 inches.

* 1968-72 Chevelle rear end housings measure 58.5 inches from flange to flange, and with the brake drums in place, the total width is 62.5 inches

  Today there was a
meeting held with Chevelle Enthusiasts from the areas ofSouthern
WesternOhio,Eastern Indiana, and Northern Kentucky. These people
officially and formally voted to form a club in these areas known as
  "Tri-State Chevelles".

  We are just
starting out, and have only had the Internet to recruit members from at this
point, butwe had 14 members in attendance and several spouses. Four very
fine Chevelles in the parking lot caused a crowd of enthusiasts to gather
around and chat, and we almost had to call upon the Sgt At Arms to exercise
crowd control to yank the people away from the Chevelles so we could start the
  meeting ;) (j/k)

  We had a great
first meeting and look forward to our first combined outing in two weeks
supporting a local Toy For Tots run. We voted to attend Chevellabration 03
next year, and hope to meet up with many of you other club members there, if
  not at another local event.

  Thanks to Chuck
Hansen and Presidents from several other clubs on guidance and information to
get us started. Wish us luck!

  Howdy,
Just wanted to drop a line and
make a special announcement. Today I traveled to a little town in Pennsylvania
called Belle Vernon and purchased myself a new (to me) car. It's a 1964 Impala
SS. Very nice shape, blue with a white top, older frame off, needs the
interior completed, as some of the smaller items are missing, or at least in
one of the many boxes and buckets of parts that came with it. Power steering,
non-power brakes (soon to be converted to power discs in front). Current
motor is a 350 CID, but includes the original 327, which is in need of a
rebuild. I am going down next weekend to bring it home. If anyone knows of a
list for Impalas as great as this one, please clue me in as to where I can
find it. Well, alright. Take it easy.

I helped start up a club in my home town and the very first thing that you
need to do is get a tax id#...
Second hold meetings and elect positions...each position has their own

I ended up not staying with the club for personal reasons between me and the

I also designed the logo for this club...

 Gents,
I am working on starting a new club in Ohio for Cincinatti and
Dayton area Chevelle owners. While there is one club in Ohio already,
it's farther than most of us in South West Ohio ( maybe northern
Kentucky and Southern Indiana?)are willing to drive to attend meetings.
The idea is to only recruit those unwilling/unable to join the current
club in Columbus, and to be brother clubs to include combined
 cruise-ins.

I am interested in talking to people that got new clubs off the ground,
learn about club charter, rules, and the good, bad and ugly on
 affiliations.

What are the benefits of talking to local businesses to your club? I am
thinking that if we can get discounts for club members and provide
information on what businesses can provide what services this would be a
 win-win.

Any other advice and do's and don't 's would be appreciated.

 Thanks!

I talked to a GM rep in a large GM trailer display booth at a car show
this last weekend after finding a CD-ROM on the restoration of Camaros.
I don't remember spefically what the CD had on it, but it looked
promising. I asked if there was one for Chevelles and he said he thought
that he heard that they had just released one for Chevelles, but that he
 didn't have any.

I know there are third party CD-ROMS available, but would be interesting
to see what GM puts out.

Looks like the General is getting more and more into the restoration
 business.

Re: [Chevelle-List] new Chevy Products/the future

2002-07-13 Thread Capt Crunch
Yeah I think there is a lot of hostility about newer cars. Lots of reasons, whether looks, mechanicals, quality... whatever... But I'm glad some of the technology has come along. FI is great now that the bugs are sorted out. But I think a number of things and problems are gonna plauge the car industry soon... 1. Extreme differences in technology. We are about to se a drastic change in technology. It is gonna make the switch to FI look like nothing. The new larger electric systems with alternators on the flywheel, cars that no longer idle but shut off while the brake is held, cylinders that stop firing on the freeway... and the list goes on and on. 2. Car companys' greed. Ever manufacturer is making their own special fluids, motor oil, addatives, etc. so they can increase profits. Also many new cars can only have some codes or ecm's read by the dealer. There also been a lot of press about the release of information to repair cars. Info for manuals has skyrocketed from manufactures so only a large company like Mitchell/Snap-On, AllData, OTC, etc can afford to purchase them. Then in return they jack the price up for smaller and independant shops. 3. Technician pay. People complain big time about labor rates. My shop is at 89.00 an hour which is very cheap around here. Most places are at about 100 and the dealers are at 110 to 120. I'm leaving the field because I simply can't survive well enough on my pay and can do a much less physical task and make more. After I shell out big money for tools (which the good quality tools cost a pretty penny and now every dang car needs a special socket or a special tool). Also sdd the fact the job is becoming much harder. Overall I think rates are gonna eploded. Especially considing the parts and labor on the Alternator for the 42 volt electrical systems is gonna be between $2500 and $3500. But to reply back... yes many of us do have a great hostility to new cars ;) Mikey - Original Message - From: John Vargas Sent: Saturday, July 13, 2002 12:03 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Ford Mustang Mach I versus new Chevy Products ? I've heard a little about those changesI remember the 8/6/4 Caddy engine that failed miserably trying to shut down cylinders. I'm sure they could do it now, but I wouldn't wanna be the first to try one. As for shutting the car off at stop lights, that's a mistake to try. I would think the restart would create undue wear and tear and create safety issues.

tool). Also sdd the fact the job is becoming much harder. Overall I think rates are gonna eploded. Especially
considing the parts and labor on the Alternator for the 42 volt electrical systems is gonna be between $2500 and $3500.

But to reply back... yes many of us do have a great hostility to new cars ;)

I pay $48 an hour at the most at my independently owned auto repair shop...sometimes he charges even less if it's really easy for him to do...guess I'm lucky.

 Hi,

I don't own a Chevelle, or any other classic car. But I would love to
own a 66 SS
Chevelle one day. I want to restore it and have a beautiful muscle car,
hopefully in
a few years I will be able to afford the new hobby.

I'd like to learn as much as I can about Chevelles, and classic cars in
general.

One of my first questions is: what is the difference between a-bodies,
f-bodies and
so on? I've tried doing a little research and I can't quite get a
consistent answer.
I've heard that each manufacturer has its own platform for different cars,
for
example: both ford and gm consider the mustang, camaro, and firebird
f-body cars.
They have different bodies but share the same chassis, drivetrain,
suspension, etc.
I was wondering if this was true.

 Thanks!

Welcome to the list. We look forward to seeing your 65 progress from a little
rough to showstopper :D Good choice of car and a good idea to tackle safety issues
first.

From memory, the S-10 spindles will work, but something tells me that they are not
the best (easiest) choice for an upgrade. I can't remember what the limiting factor
is, maybe someone else can help.

A frequent swap that works well is the Tall Spindle swap. Found on 70-81 Camaros,
73-77 chevelles and B-Bodies from 77-91. This one gives you disks, and also improves
handling.

RE: [Chevelle-List] new to me 65 Chevelle

2002-07-11 Thread 396guy

Three reasons I went with the Baer 13" Track
setup.

1. A friend of mine is a dealer and I did get a little
price break. In essence I got the polished calipers ($145 option) and the
cross drilled, slotted, zinc washed rotors ($120 option) for something like
$30/$40 when all was totaled up.

2. I was going with 17" wheels anyway and the 13" Baer's
just look damn sexy behind the ARE 200S wheels.

3. I didn't want to have to mess with replacing the
spindles - meaning busting the ball joints loose, worrying about keeping the
spring compressed (or removing it all together) since the suspension was fairly
new anyway. The kit came complete, although the adjustable prop valve was
$50 extra, with all brackets, bolts, hoses, master cylinder, etc. Labor
time and installation was much easier.

Their SS (Serious Street) kit w/12" rotors is only $20
cheaper so why not go with the 13" kit?

For anyone thinking of going with the tall spindle disc conversion, look for
a mid 80's station wagon to get your spindles, most of them came with 12
rotors instead of 11. The only catch is the bolt pattern is 5x5 so the
rotors will need to be redrilled with the correct 5x4.75 pattern.

GM A bodies refer to all full frame mid size GM cars from 64-77, ie Chevelle, LeMans, GTO, Skylark, Monte Carlo, Cutlass, 442. All these share the same frame and chassis components for the most part

F bodies are Novas, Camaros Firebirds and they are a unibody design, not a full frame. They use leaf spring suspension as opposed to a coil spring setup like the A bodies have.

G bodies refer to the 78-88 Mid Size GM cars, basically same models as the A bodies (Cutlass, Malibu, Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Regal, GN, 442, El Camino)

The GM A bodies for the most part interchange with each other except for model specific parts like interior, sheetemetal, drivetrain, trim pieces, etc. Some parts off F boides and the full size cars will even interchange on the A bodies

This list is full of very knowledgable people that are ready and willing to help.

RE: [Chevelle-List] new person

2002-07-11 Thread Dave Studly

hey andrea..

The a-body vs. f-body vs. g-body etc, are just the different manufacturer's
designation for a certain platform (chassis). They're only relavent when
talking about the same manufactuer. You can't compare a GM A-body to a
Chrysler A-body.

GM A-bodies include: Olds Cutlass, Buick Skylark/Special, Pontiac
Tempest/GTO, Chevy Chevelle
GM F-bodies include: Chevy Camaro, Pontiac Firebird
GM X-bodies include: Chevy Nova, Olds Omega, Pontiac Ventura, Buick Apollo.

And sometimes, the same model (ie: Monte Carlo) might be an A-body from
70-77 and then a G-body from '78-up.

As an example, I believe a Chrysler A-body is a Duster. There's no relation
between a Chrysler A-body and a GM A-body. They just happen to use the same
letter designation. Sometimes a chassis designation has a name instead of a
letter. The '79-up Mustangs are commonly referred to as Fox-body (or
fox-chassis) cars.

Yes, it can be a little confusing, but it's not too complicated. Hope this
clears things up a little.

-Dave

Yeah, this was a strange deal. They introduced it as a new product but
then
there weren't any available. It sounds to me like they were pretty sure of
themselves, but when the parts actually arrived, there was a fit problem
or
something. The same thing happened with the new 67 Chevelle grill

announced but never seemed to be available. I was told that there was a

We do have a couple used ones available. One is decent, the other is fair.
We can have either one straightened and re-anodized, but that gets very

Thanks for the kind words everybody. It's definitely a good feeling to see
one come out of a junkyard and come back to a nice roadworthy condition. The
best way to keep the hobby alive is to keep the cars alive IMO. This won't
be a points-winning car because I am not doing the frame and it has the
wrong engine transmission in it, an SS hood, and is on its way to being
the wrong colors according to the body tag. I intend to have a lot of fun
with it though, and it will be great for hauling parts. This is the first
time (after many old cars) that I am getting to do the whole thing over
before I ever drive it. You can imagine it will be a good feeling the first
time I turn the key.

Hi Chad,

This is not the type of restoration you would want to do yourself unless you
have some experience. This job required a fair amount of welding. The job
you described will also require some welding. Also, you never really know
how much work there is to do until after the paint has been stripped off,
and that is also the point of no return because if you don't move on, it
will rust to death.

Some of the tools you would need are a welding torch, an arc welder, and
maybe a spot welder, special hammers and sanding equipment, impact tools, a
very good compressor, paint spraying equipment, various sheet metal cutting
equipment, the list goes on and on. Obviously it can be done though. You are
young and you have plenty of time to start collecting the stuff. Keep in
mind that you will be dealing with lots of chemicals that are really
noxious. You will need a good chemical vapor mask, which is probably about
$300, and a good ventilation system.

You might want to go to a junkyard and buy a random fender or door that is
toast for a cheap price and practice repairing the damage and painting it.
There are also vocational classes that you can take (even for the older
guys). My brother recently took a night class through the local B.O.C.E.S.
program and learn how to fabricate panels (tin-bumping). That is a real
art that will enable you to restore just about anything. My advice is that
if you really want to do it, start learning and start collecting the tools,
and practice on pieces that are not important to you first.

hi, i was wondering, umm...how hard is this to restore?
also, i would like to know this, i know there isnt an exact answer, What
tools are a nessecessity for a restoration project? ok, i say this car has
rust around the rear window, lower fenders, seats are ripped, carpet is
aged, so on. what tools would i need? also, can someone point out to me
how do you replace a fender? first of all, how do you take it off? how do
you take off the fender extensions, bumpers, windows, and so on. to me, it
would be very time consuming to restore a car, but i couldnt see anyone else
doing it, and plus, you get the satisfactory note of realizing that you made
this car basically.

you know, thats exactly what i was thinking. could you describe how those
welding tools work? thanks. the only one i know of is the kind that is
hooked up to a battery, and you have a lead thing and you move along the
metal with the other metal? but like you said, get a fender, and pratice
until you perfect it, thats what i had in mind! can you tell me the cost
for all those tools? also, how long does it take for a typical fender
replacement? what would you rather do - replace a whole fender, or just
sheetmetal replacement? also, how much space do you need to do this? sorry
for so many questions, but i have had so many questions for the past 6

It's funny you mention that. When we first got here (VA)
I was driving down a 35mph four lane road near my house. Naturally I was
going about 45-50 because if you went any slower the other cars would run you
over.

Anyway, as I approach the stop light to make my right turn, a
police car is making a left onto the street I'm on. About two minutes
later I notice the red and blue lights in my mirror! I pull over and roll
down my window to be greeted by "Trooper Dan." After he gives me a
speeding ticket (how he clocked me I have no clue) he asks what kind of exhaust
I have on my Blazer. I said dual. ;) He said, "No, what
brand?" I said Spin Tech. Then he said, "You have to change your
exhaust, performance exhaust systems aren't allowed in this state." Right
about that time, I 5.0 Rustang rumbles past with Flowmasters on it!

I didn't want to push the issue so I didn't ask, but I was
thinking if"performance" exhaust systems aren't legal, why isn'the
giving me a ticket for that too?

It's no big deal even if I do get tickets for noisy exhaust,
it's not like I drive it everyday and I'm only going to be here for about 4
years. Personally, I don't think the Elky is that loud. :)

You might want to rethink that. I've lived in
Lawton, OK (Fort Sill) for 20+ years and many cars here are registered from
home states. That doesn't mean they still don't have to comply with
Oklahoma laws. That includes too loud an exhaust, stereo, and even how
deep a tint you can legally have on your windows. I'm sure that if Virginia
has laws on noise levels, exit points, etc., you'll have problems explaining
why your car on their streets doesn't comply with their laws. Licenses,
tags, etc. may be from your home state, but I'd watch the laws of the
  state.

Anyway, just wondering. I grew upon Dahlgren, a Navyand Coast

What's the Commonwealth? Is that like the
  DMV?

If it is, I'm active duty Coast Guard and the Elky is
registered/licensed/insured in my home state of Arizona -so the
Commonwealth has no say in my exhaust system.

I guess that's one of the benefits of being military.

Sweet!

Did the Commonwealth give you a hard time about the exhaust
system?

RE: [Chevelle-List] New web page

You might want to rethink that. I've lived in Lawton,
OK (Fort Sill) for 20+ years and many cars here are registered from home
states. That doesn't mean they still don't have to comply with Oklahoma
laws. That includes too loud an exhaust, stereo, and even how deep a tint
you can legally have on your windows. I'm sure that if Virginia has laws on
noise levels, exit points, etc., you'll have problems explaining why your car on
their streets doesn't comply with their laws. Licenses, tags, etc. may be
from your home state, but I'd watch the laws of the state.

Re: [Chevelle-List] New truck

2002-05-28 Thread bdo_chevelle

I couldn't get the photos to load but did see that it's
a '73 C20 - good choice (I have a '78 C10 so I might be
a tad biased).

The TH400 uses an electric kickdown switch mounted under
the gas pedal. The secondary air valve is vacuum-
controlled and will open only enough to admit the amount
of air needed by the engine. As long as the carb port
supplies manifold vacuum you're OK. As for the pinging,
have you checked the timing and for vacuum leaks?

If you're interested there's a '73-87 Chevy/GMC truck
list/group at groups.yahoo.com. It's fairly low-traffic
but there are knowledgeable people there.

Brad O.

We finally got to where we could replace the '83 ElkyI decided to give
Jana the 78 SS so it would get a lot less use and abuse from carrying my
tools and get a truck. I wound up with a 3/4 ton bruiser with the stiffest
suspension I've ever experienced first hand. This truck is as tight as a
drum everywhere and the engine only has 6k on it in the last seven years.
Unfortunately that means the carb is shot and the tranny doesn't downshift,
but these are easily fixed later...in the meantime it's driveable and is
 actually pretty smooth.

 Here's some pics...

 http://users3.ev1.net/~woodcat/NewTruck2.html

Anyone know if the TH-400 used a kickdown cable like the TH-350? There
doesn't seem to be one, nor a place to mount one (on the tube that carries
the vacuum to the booster). It won't down shift under any amount of pedal
pressure. The vacuum line isn't connected to manifold vacuum, but to a carb
line and it's T'd to another line going to the vacuum ball by the heater
 coredoes this matter?

Also the idle sucks and wasn't fixed with new plugs. I figure the carb is a
mess. It pings at full throttle and seems like the secondaries aren't
opening up. What operates the back flapper on the carb (over the
secondaries)...it's wide open on my Edelbrock 1406, but on the Quad, there
doesn't seem to be anything controlling when the flap opens. There's a
place for a rod to open the door, but I don't get where it attaches to. The
bottom doors open to the manifold fine, but the truck bogs and pings loudly
if you give it too much gas.

Cool...yeah I noticed the problem, not sure what it is

The TH400 uses an electric kickdown switch mounted under
the gas pedal.

Ok, I'll check that.

The secondary air valve is vacuum-
controlled and will open only enough to admit the amount
of air needed by the engine. As long as the carb port
supplies manifold vacuum you're OK.

It's one near the top of the carb...I'm gonna move it today.

   As for the pinging,
have you checked the timing and for vacuum leaks?

Yep, both were found this morning. I re-adjusted the timing today and it no
longer pings on acceleration. When the vacuum leak was fixed the other two
barrels opened right away.

If you're interested there's a '73-87 Chevy/GMC truck
list/group at groups.yahoo.com. It's fairly low-traffic
but there are knowledgeable people there.

Thanks Brad, I'm signed up and will introduce myself when the pics get
fixed...thanks for the info.
