Hey Ron, yeah I don't think the 40s sound bad, I think they sound great. I agree with you though that they can be a little too much on a long drive. Re: [Chevelle-list] Flowmaster
Flowmaster recently raised all of their prices, so that may not still be the price. I just updated all of my Flowmaster prices about a week ago to reflect the new 2006 prices. I know I personally can't sell that system for $300 (assuming you mean the 11719 because the 11720 is even more). Retail businesses just can't survive on 10% margins, especially with that much cash outlay. Flowmaster makes it really hard for the smaller vendors because they give much better pricing to the bigger guys. You just can't compete with a margin like that and still stay in business. If they are really selling the 11719 for $300, that is 20% below jobber, which no small company can compete with because we just don't get the kind of pricing that would allow that. The shipping would cost more than what we would make on it. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Mumper, Douglas Sent: Friday, January 27, 2006 10:24 PM To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Flowmaster Summit racing has it for $309.00 US, I paid $300 last winter Doug 66 chevelle -Original Message- From: John [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 27, 2006 2:21 PM To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Flowmaster I just got a quote here in Alberta of $361.52cdn for the 2 1/2 inch system ...I don't know how they do it cause the Flowmaster web site says $470 usd for the same system..But...I will take it... Re: [Chevelle-list] Flowmaster
The Flowmaster site probably only shows the list price because they don't sell retail, and they know that most of the retailers sell them below list (we sort of have to in order to sell any at all). In other words, they are not going to show prices that would compete with a retailer because the retailers are their customers, not the public. Can’t be. The 40s are a totally different physical size. 30s and 50s are the same physical size but 50s are not as loud as 30s. Some of my customers who order the 17119 kit ask for 50s instead of 30s, which is not a problem. The 17120 (El Camino) kit has always come with 50s. I have a Flowmaster system with 50s on my 69 El Camino w/ SBC. I am happy with it. It is pretty cheap for a fairly complete system, and it was easy to install. If you are just basically joy-riding with your car, I think you would be happy in the absence of all sorts of science. Hey Herb, no problem..I didn't think that offer would last very long..thanks to you too Mike for answering the question about the 30"s..I think that's exactly what I'll get.. thank you all for giving us new guys and gals so much great information.. tom
Re: [Chevelle-list] Flowmaster exhaust kit 17202
Tom, I have 30's with a three inch system on my 421 Tempest. They are not as loud as 40's. Not much interior noise but a deep throaty sound out back. Loud enough to get attention but not so loud as to be annoying. RE: [Chevelle-list] Flowmaster exhaust kit 17202
Hi Mike, In my opinion, a 3" exhaust isn't too big for a 350, it might not have the same flow velocity of a smaller system, but I've never noticed a drop in performance on my cars. Besides, I prefer the sound of a 3" system over a 2.5" or smaller. Were you interested in the kit I'm getting from Flowmaster? Hey Herb, I might be interested. The reason I ask is because while on Power Tour my Elky was selected as one of the display cars for the CHP 40 Year Chevelle celebration. As a result of this selection, I received a bunch of coupons in the mail the other day and the best one is a completely free Chevelle exhaust system (or equivelant) from Flowmaster. I don't need it for my Elky and they don't make a kit for my Vette. I was going to put it on the shelf in case I ever got another Chevelle but then I thought maybe someone on the list might be interested in buying it from me. If not, I might list it on eBay. RE: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster kit install
I just got done bolting my American Thunder kit on a '71 Malibu. I found that a pipe expander was helpful to get the tail pipes in the mufflers easier, and help to rotate them for clearance. The expander I got from the AutoZone loan-a-tool program (free). I used band clamps to seal the joints. They worked fine except for the position at the hangers, where there is not quite enough room to fit the u bracket from the hanger and the band clamp. I made it fit anyway, and there are no leaks. I also found that the tail pipes (the turn downs) extended beyond the rear bumper pretty far compared to most exhausts I've seem, maybe 2-3 inches. I might trim them some day. John, I'm gonna begin my pro street project hopefully this month. I'm gonna need a lot of panels and was curious about oversized shipping costs are like and wether or not UPS will carry them (or is truck freight required). I realize that most parts are oversized...so is there any tips to ordering bulky parts. If necessary i can always drive 2 hours away and pick up parts from one of the major suppliers if it looks like shipping cost are gonna be crazy. Which do you think would be best. “these illegal hot rod exhausts increase noise levels, which produces chaos and confusion” Chaos and confusion is my motto… Did you read the other ones on their page? Thanks for checking Kurt. Its good to know. The guys at Flowmaster told me that the ones that go straight out are to match the Oldsmobile OEM look and the ones with the bend are meant to match the OEM look of the other GM makes, but only the 11720 tailpipes exit behind the tires. John Nasta -Original Message- Which tailpipes did you install? Based on the diagram from their web site, it looks like one set goes straight back and the other goes to the rear corners. RE: [Chevelle-List] flowmaster discount
Ok, I just called. The 17119 comes with 30 series mufflers. If you want 40 or 50 series, then you have to order the 17107 kit w/o mufflers, and buy the mufflers separately. It also does come with two sets of tailpipes; the ones that go straight out the back as well as the ones that go out toward the corners. The rear pipes have to be adjusted for the 68-72 cars due to the smaller wheelbase. The 17120 comes with 50 series mufflers and one set of tailpipes, which exit behind the rear tires. It is made to fit the 116-inch wheelbase of the 68-72 El Camino, wagon, and 4dr sedan, but can be cut down to fit the 112-inch and 115-inch wheelbase cars. RE: [Chevelle-List] flowmaster discount
John, I know the 17119 kit I bought through Summit had both tailpipe options...behind the rear wheel or almost to the rear bumper. Who's to say what it is now, eh? I'd be interested to hear what they say about the two kits and not only the mufflers. If there are truly two kits that depend on the wheelbase and they are lumping all 64-72 A-bodies into the two kits, then there is more of a problem. Remember, the 68 and up have 112" vs. 116" (coupe to Elky/wagon), where the 67 at least is 115" for all models. It does seem like there is some conflicting info on their site. I'm going to call them tomorrow and verify it. I do believe they told me over the phone that they both come w/ 50 series, and that's what the application guide seems to suggest. The diagram that Dale posted a link to also shows 2 sets of tailpipes, and I'm sure it does not come with 2 sets, so I have to wonder about the accuracy of that diagram. I checked out the links you posted, but I'm still wondering how you found them. When I cruise around their site, I don't see where the info is listed. I am looking at the Chevy application chart, and the 2 kits are listed on the same line. The 52456 (5-inch 50 series) is highlighted by a black block with white type, so I was assuming that this means that these are the mufflers that come with both kits. Also, I have been checking other catalogs and have seen the 17119 listed saying that it comes with 50 series mufflers. Also, in my phone calls with them, I do believe they said that both kits come with 50 series mufflers. I'll have to check it out tomorrow because they are closed for the day. John Nasta -Original Message- The wheelbase (for 1967's anyway) is 115" for all models. I think it's the 68 and up that the wagon/Elky is 4" longer (116" vs. 112") so for a pre-68 Elky or wagon, would you need the longer 17120 kit? Since the kits are really ~universal~ GM A-body from 64-72, it would behoove the buyer to be aware of the wheel base of their car before ordering to ensure they get a kit that will fit. The mufflers are not even the same - at least according to the FlowMaster website. The muffler numbers were taken straight off their website. I went to What's New and did a search on the two kits. The 17119 kit shows all the parts at http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/openrd/showthread.php?s=3a1868eda897 63744ed542d02d49ba76&threadid=319&highlight=17119 The 17120 kit shows all its parts at http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/openrd/showthread.php?s=3a1868ed a89763744ed542d02d49ba76&threadid=318&highlight=17120 clearly showing different mufflers. Let's see...the $30 less expensive kit ($299 vs. $329) has $60 more in muffler costs ($109x2=$218 vs. $80x2=$160) so the longer (albeit different) pipes and the stainless steel tips (which may be correct for 68 and up ?) cars costs $88 more in the long run? The $30 difference would make more sense if both kits had the same mufflers, but again, according to their website, they don't have the same mufflers. Am I missing something here or have the parts included in the kits been changed and the website (plus their .PDF catalog file) does not reflect what is really included? Dale > My first thought was the different mufflers made the difference in > price. Not so. John, On their home page of http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/indexf5.html, I clicked the ~It's New~ button on the left. From the nav bar at the top of the page I clicked ~search~. I input the American Thunder part number (from their .PDF file you mention) in the ~Search By Keyword~ block and it turns up one item found. You can either click the link to 17119 (with the paperclip) under the ~Thread~ column heading and it shows an exploded view of the parts that are in the 17119. Same was done with the 17120 kit. If you click the ~Kit Diagram Database~ link (instead of the part number found), it displays a list of all the kits and their components. I suppose it's possible that the designs and specs changed since these were drawn up, maybe the staff you spoke with just assumed one over the other, or (worse yet), the packaging and shipping dept assume one over the other. The posted date both kits is 10-15-2001 but I'm sure this is just the date the admin posted the information. I saved both pics for future reference. If you still can't find them on the web, let me know and I'll send them to you offline. They are only 25Kb each in .JPG format. Better yet, I'll send them to you offline anyway. RE: [Chevelle-List] flowmaster discount
The wheelbase (for 1967's anyway) is 115" for all models. RE: [Chevelle-List] flowmaster discount
Very interesting. One thing I do know is that the El Camino / Wagon frame has a 4" longer wheelbase. So, the 17119 would be too short for an El Camino, and the part that is meant to go over the rear axle wouldn't clear. The 17120 kit can be made to fit the 2dr Chevelle / Malibu by cutting 4" off of the H-pipe. The H-pipes are different because they are different lengths. The tailpipes are different because one is made to exit the side and the other the rear. The 11720 tailpipes also come with stainless steel tips already welded on. Therefore the only thing that the 11719 and 11720 have in common is the 50 series mufflers. John Nasta -Original Message- John/All, I was looking at the Flowmaster site and found a couple of interesting things. I would have thought that the kits from the engine back to the over-the-axle pipe would be the same and only the extensions (tail pipes) would be different. I put the 17119 kit on my 67 SS and had pipes to either come out behind the rear tire (like factory) or extend to the rear bumper. I wondered why the 17119 kit was so much less expensive than the 17120 (Elky/Wagon) kit. It seems that ~almost none~ of the pipes or mufflers are the same - not even the pipes going back to the rear axle. The 17119 kit comes with 30 series mufflers (52533) while the 17120 kit comes with 50 series mufflers (52558). The exhaust extension pipes, H-pipe, over-the-axle, everything is different. Is there that much difference between coupe/convertible and Elky/wagon frames that the front half of the exhaust is so different? Guess I just never noticed before. Thanks Dale, That should not be a problem. I have two brand new pipes that come down from the x-mans and end under the floorboards, so I have plenty of good pipe to connect to. I guess in the true spirit of a "typical driveway installation" I should use a coffee can and 2 clamps to make a patch :) John Nasta -Original Message- It shouldn't be a problem, just cut the length to fit to your stock exhaust pipe. My point was that it's not a DIRECT REPLACEMENT all the way to the exhaust manifold AND you'll have to weld or band clamp the pipes together which I consider not a typical driveway installation like factory style exhaust. Re: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster install
For what its worth, I installed the Flowmaster kit for the El Camino on my 70. I installed it in my driveway and it fit like a dream. The H pipe and all pipes are above the frame rails, dont drag. The two pipes that connect to the headers are adjustable and need to be cut to fit. I used a regular pipe cutter for plumbing pipe, three wheels that role around the pipe to be cut. I used the band type clamps from Dynomax. The system came with all hardware and hangers to install. I substituted the Dynomax clamps for the regular muffler clamps. Other than that you got everything needed to install. Re: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster install
John, thats what i have done in the past (brought my own muffs in) i had one shop complain that he was not going to make any money on the mufflers if i did that, BUT THEN I JUST WENT SOMEWHERE ELSE. if you are worried about flow i would go to a regular fab shop who could put madrel(? spelling) bent stuff on for you- i have seen some pretty restricted stuff come out of muffler shops (like on my v8 s10). there are also diffrent thickness of pipe and kinds too, aluminized, stainless (this does not rust but i heard it turns brown from the heat and looks like rust) also some swear by h- pipes. my engine builder told me that he has found they just cut down the noise a little, no real power gains. (??) and also they hang down lower and make removing the trans driveshaft a pain- but they could use fittings here too for that. just some ideas to get you thinking, i/m not sure if all my info is correct but this is what i have been told. Re: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster - stainless ?
My exhaust pipes are not from Flowmaster, but they are aluminized. Pretty much any muffler shop you go to will stock aluminized exhaust tubing. I just bought the mufflers (2.5") from Flowmaster and had a local shop bend the pipe and do the installation. With that said, the aluminized pipes are in good shape, no signs of rust, etc. FYI, instead of carrying the exhaust tubing all the way over the rear axle to the back of the car, I'm just using 45 degree turn downs (angled slightly outward) just in front of the rear axle. It's definitely louder that way, and you have to deal with a little more interior noise... But for me, the sound is worth it. Re: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster - stainless ? - Aluminized
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Galen I've had the aluminized flowmaster exhaust system on my el camino for over 50K miles (maybe 8 yrs). Its still solid. No rust or discoloration in either the pipes or mufflers.I did coat the inside of the pipes with POR15 when they were new. I had headers ceramic coated by Airborne 20K miles ago and its held up well. Ceramic coating is an available option now on most new headers. I'd get it. rick On Tue, 5 Mar 2002 10:52:13 -0500 "Cecil \"Steve\" Martin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > Galen, > Are the pipes staying free from rust as well? RE: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster - stainless ?
Galen, Are the pipes staying free from rust as well? Or did you not buy the pipes from them as well? I was wondering what “alumninized” steel pipes would look like after taking high heat and use. Sounds like you got your money’s worth on the mufflers for sure after 6 years and still in good shape. Seems to be a lot of happy customers. Dale makes a good point. If they are of high enough quality to where they last a long time, I guess you don’t need stainless unless you are doing mostly shows. Thanks to Larry for his buddy’s expert opinion. Sounds logical, and you know us guys like logic….except sometimes when buying things for our cars that we WANT ;) Well that about makes my decision on exhaust system, except what to do with headers. I want some kind of coating for the headers I need to buy for my 396. Re: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster - stainless ?
My buddy in the exhaust business says aluminized will last just as long as stainless and unless you got a diesel it aint worth it. Larry (z)
Re: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster - stainless ?
As far as longevity is concerned, I've had Flowmasters on my Chevelle for about 6 years now, and they aren't showing any signs of rust. I live in Kansas, so they get exposed to rain, dirt, snow, and salt on a routine basis.
