Recently picked up a ' 69 Chevelle SS in excellent condition inside and
out .The motor is from a '72 Chevelle as best I can tell from the number
on the engine block ( made on March 20 at the Tonawanda plant ). Would
like to find out what would be involved to locate the correct date code
396 engine . I plan on keeping the car for a very long time due to
waiting 36 years to get one .My neighbor / big brother bought one
back in May of ' 69 and I fell in love with it then . I would say it was
worth the wait to finally get my own . I'm also a lucky guy because my
wife also shares the same passion for that car.

Congrats on finding your dream. I'm sure that there are venders who
specialize in date coded blocks. You probably need to do a web
search to find some. Tromping around swap meets you may also
stumble acrossed the correct block. Also are you a member of ACES?
Every issue there are classified ads in the back and I frequently see
listings for dated blocks. If you have time, I'd try the swap meet
route first, if for nothing more than to save some cash. Seems like
you would have the patience (36 years worth) to look around.

And welcome to the list. You missed our recent threads on

There was a recent discussion on buildsheets. Buildsheets were used by the
line workers as to the equipment a vehicle was to be assembled with. Once
done with the paper, liner workers would stick the paper in just about any
where they wanted. More to get rid of the paper than anything else - it
wasn't mandatory it stay with the car. Common areas have been under
carpets, stuffed up in the dash, on top of fuel tank (weather got most of
these), above the headliner, stuffed into seats etc. If by chance your car
was built Canadian built, Canada kept a build record for each car shipped -
so you might be in luck. Check your VIN and if not sure submit your VIN
to the list and we can direct you.

I have a '69 Chevelle SS and trying to find the build sheet for the car .
The interior was completely re-done by the previous owner . Asked him if
the build sheet was found then and he said no . Is the a source available
to get a copy of the build sheet from ? Does Chevy have any sort of old
records ( an archieve of build sheet )like that and how can I contact them?

Thanks for any helpPeter Hnat

2 bolts work easily to 700HP. If you go that route you could

Two-bolt BB engines can easily handle 500hp. 750hp

JC, I have had many 454's
with around 700 to 750 horse and only 2 bolt mains. I think if you keep the

won't have any reason to worry about a 2 bolt main block.

If youre asking for a *personal* feel on shocks, youll
probably get varying opinions since whats soft and comfortable to one
may be mushy to another. Road conditions and the way you drive will also be
a factor. If you want specs, Id visit Edelbrock, KYB, Monroe, etc and see if
they list things like rebound rates, vehicle weight comparisons, etc. or call
one of the companies to get specs.

Quick
question. Does anyone have any input on shocks? I've got a small
block with Hotchkis springs and am looking for a good performing shock
not too stiff and with good rebound. Have heard the KYB is a bit
stiff. Any news on the Edelbrock shock? Any ideas?
Thanks. Mike

Mike, I'm running Edelbrocks on my Tempest. The car is set up
to be fairly stiff, for handling. The Edelbrocks work well when pushed, but are
a little harsh in normal driving. They suit my needs well, but if you are after
a smooth ride you will not like them. I have KYBs on my Elky and I really like
them. Yes they are a little stiff.

When I did a story on Bonneville bikes, Doug Meyer's ZX-11 was making
215-220 HP, and also had a few minor aerodynamic mods, but could only make
197 on the salt. Of course, the altitude at Bonneville takes away a lot of
horsepower, but the wisdom amongst several veteran speed-record-holding
riders was that even at sea level, at least 230 HP would be needed to
crack
the 200 mph mark. Above that, another 3-5 HP would be required for each
each
 additional mph.

And that doesn't even address the question of how much space is required
to
 squeeze out that extra speed.

PS: I have been radared at 194 mph on a Honda CBR1100XX. It was on an oval
test track that allowed about 170 mph through the banked turns, where you
nailed the throttle and glued yourself to the tank as you entered each of
the 2-mile straightaways. I was with several other journalists and racers,
one of whom was smart enough to pull the mirrors in to the fairing, and
who
therefore clocked the fastest speed, at 197. I've also hit about 180 at
Bonneville, but was running out of space (!) and had to shut down before
the
wheelspin fully caught up with the revs. Believe me, the ten seconds it
takes to squeeze another 100 rpm out of your motor eats up a LOT of space
 3-plus miles per minute.

It is my educated opinion that unless this guy's bike has at least 250 HP,
AND he is a complete and utter idiot (Highway 61 is no Bonneville salt
flat,
or 4-lane wide test track), AND he has nads bigger than any living human,
this simply could NOT have happened. That is too many ifs for me to
believe. This whole story is bullshit.

See my alternate theory in a seperate e-mail, which you may have to get
forwarded to you from Riggins. -- JG

Minn. Trooper Writes 205 Mph Ticket

WABASHA, Minn. (AP) -- With a State Patrol airplane overhead, a motorcyclist
hit the throttle and possibly set the informal record for the fastest
speeding ticket in Minnesota history: 205 mph.

On Saturday afternoon, State Patrol pilot Al Loney was flying near Wabasha,
in southeastern Minnesota on the Wisconsin border, watching two
motorcyclists racing along U.S. Highway 61.

When one of the riders shot forward, Loney was ready with his stopwatch. He
clicked it once when the motorcycle reached a white marker on the road and
again a quarter-mile later. The watch read 4.39 seconds, which Loney
calculated to be 205 mph.

I have a friend who was pulled over for doing over 100 mph. The officer said
in a sarcastic tone ok buddy, let me see your pilot's license. Well, as it
happens, my friend Bill is a pilot, so he complied with the officer's
request. Upon seeing the license the officer just laughed and said Well, I
asked for it. I guess I have to let you go now. He let Bill go with no
ticket at all. I guess it was the biggest surprise the officer had in a
while. Too bad it wasn't caught on camera. Would have made a great bit for

I would find a car with a good rear section, cut yours off and weld the good
one on. Should be an easy fix if it's just the section under the trunk. The
big problem is if this section is rusted out, how bad is the rest of the
frame. It may not be rusted through but it may be in poor condition. I know
this isn't what you want to hear but the best fix is replace the frame.

I just want to thank those who responded to my post about removing the
speedometer from my 66. I am on digest and should have asked earlier. I
couldn't
wait for the next digest and stubbornly plugged ahead (weather was decent,

Another question, has anyone taken the instrument cluster apart? My

any recommendations on someone who could repair it?

 Thanks again

Shift kits usually improve the quality of shift. The slur between shifts is
diminished. Minor modifications are usually done to the valve body for
lighter duty ones. Under wot with a good shift kit the wheels will chirp
when the trans goes through the gears. Shift kits also prolong the life of
the trans by not slipping as much during shifts. It can tend to be harder
on universal joints as you might guess.

As for the benefit of a High Performance mods done to the TH350
Not 100% sure what was done... But for sake of argument .. Think of a
Automatic transmission as a big Hydraulic pump.. Which when you modify and
UPS the operating Pressure. Then in a typical High Performance rebuild
You my then can add heavy duty Clutch pack So your Th350 is not a SLUSH

I can attest to the column shifter. I have a TH350 in my 67 Elky behind

Thanks Larry. I guess it must have been junk. I looked through the stack of repair orders and see that my grandfather had it in the dealership about 5 times for shifting problems. Maybe I should just leave it be. I appreciate the input.

There was no console with a bench. Actually your car even though stock is quit rare with the bench seat and 3 speed. just over 8,000 had bench seat Vs almost 79817 with buckets. I believe the Muncie shifter was complete junk. I've seen many who wanted originality use a hurst shifter body and a Muncie handle.

RE: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)

2003-08-19 Thread Dale McIntosh
While I realize that it's easy to get in a hurry and miss a word here
and there (like does NOT send parts) but the emphasis on education the
past few years seems to be too touchy-feely, make the child feel good
and there are no winners or losers. Unfortunately, it's when those
kids become adults that the facts hit home and people write like they
speak leaving it up to someone else to figure out what they are trying
to convey. I guess it just escapes me how simple 3 and 4 letter words
can be so misused. Know, no, now, then, than, it's, its, and one of my
favorite non-words...alot.

If English is indeed a second language to the writer, I applaud his/her
(and all) efforts at the task. English is a daunting and, at times
stupid, language and writing does not reflect emotion or inflection so
often needed in oral conversation. I know it'd be very difficult for me
to attack a second language unless I absolutely had to. Being from the
midwest, I still chuckle a bit (inside of course) at southern drawl,
ya'll and fixing to do something but after 25+ years, it's getting
easier :*).

Aside from the obvious faux pas of the wording, I found it odd that the
person was asking if they should give someones name while not signing
the email themselves.

Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)

2003-07-29 Thread Mike Holleman

Joe, The light switch has a small button
with a spring under it behind the dash. Compress the button and pull your knob
and shaft out. Then you can unscrew the bezel with whatever you can fit into the
slots. I made a tool from an old socket, but a snap ring plier will work too.
The wiper knob has a small slotted set screw in the bottom. The ignition switch
is tricky. You insert a small pin in the hole on the front and rotate the key
counterclockwise and the cylinder will come out. It sometimes takes a few trys
to make it release. Once the cylinder is removed you can screw the bezel off.
There is a special tool for this on the market but you can improvize and usually
back it off. Hope this helps.

Just a quick note to ya'll. Just Cuz' I'm so Dang happy. My wife and I
had
a baby boy Wednesday night! After having two girls, I needed a boy to
hand
me tools, and get greasy with. Anyways, he was 10Lbs 10 Oz. He's a
monster! After He grows up, I may not need a jack, I can just have him
lift
the back of the Chevelle for me! Anyway, his name is Joseph Dale, named
after my two role models, My Dad, and Dale Earnhardt. I'll be offline for
a
week or so, as I'm going to be out of the office helping at home. I catch
up with ya'll when I get back! L8R!

By the way, anybody Know where I can find a Gloss Black Stroller with
racing
slicks, and a big number 3 on the side?!

 that the wipers mount
 to
just under the windshield for a 69 chevelle. I
had taken apart a cowl off

Wow, 10Lbs 10 Oz. Your wife may never let you near her again.

I thought my youngest boy at 10Lbs 2 Oz. was big. I told my wife if he

funny.

Just so you know what you have to look forward to: My son, Kyle, just

Congrats on the healthy baby boy, I seen a golf cart at the GM Nationals last week that was a replica of the # 3 Goodwrench car equipped with chrome header pipes coming out from behind the front wheels which were CragerS/S, but sorry didn't see any strollers like that

To unsubscribe from this service you must first
purchase a Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation
Unit. The unit can be obtained from most hardware stores and dental
clinics. Be sure to obtain the proper permits to operate the unit from
the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Food and Drug Administration
in Washington D.C. USA. Be sure to carefully unpack the kit and place
each component in its accompanying mesh safety bag. Mount the
Pershing DF4 mesinator on top of the perforated Gerring Mach 77
refibulator and attach them using the eight-millimeter torque fork. Be
sure that the refibulator is mounted at a 66 degree angle and properly
dispersed so that it is flush with the curved section of the Pyrex
thistle tube. Place the four sections of the triangular separation
gear into the posture cylinder and lock them into place using the
band aid adhesive strip. Insert the wiggling pin into the wobbling
hole, making sure that it seated correctly. Place the D cell
battery and the eleven 9 volt batteries in the power chamber. The
device should be calibrated before operation using the optional
digital corkscrew accessory pack prior to operation. Insert the
digital corkscrew through the electronic combustion service chamber
using caution not to touch the reinforced tungsten igniter control
module and quickly turn the inverter drive to 28.6 degrees. Turn the
Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit upside down
and hit the bottom plate with a 48-ounce ball-peen hammer while
shaking the unit vigorously. Force open the door to the incineration
valve compartment and set the pressure gauge to 719 psi. Close the
door and seal it shut with duct tape. The unit should now be properly
calibrated and ready to use. Before activating the Craft-O-Matic
Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit, you must first elevate it
to a height of 229 feet above sea level to insure that the unit
receives the proper oxygen level and barometric pressure. Point
the aerial to 17 degrees north by northeast to within the parameters
of the Telstar GS-2 weather satellite and apply pressure to the wing
shaft on the southern most section of the modular accelerator. Using
the special ratchet adapter supplied with the unit, rotate the heater
core to the "on" position. The "on" position has been obtained when
the green light begins to flash, signifying that the red light is
about to go off. Once the red light is off, flip the toggle switch
labeled "ON/OFF" to the "ON" position and count to 47 before logging
on to the system. Logon using your username and password and wait for
the prompt. Once prompted you must check the box with the
appropriate action you wish to take and then press the pressure
release button and turn off the compressor while turning the hand
crank at 231 meters per minute. Next, press control, alt, delete, caps
lock, shift, number lock, escape and tab simultaneously. Press
enter. You will have one second to complete the procedure. If you fail
to respond in the time limit allowed, simply purchase a new

2002-04-10 Thread MICRLASER
the 2 chevelles I have, 69 70, were both factory vinyl top cars. Both have leaded 1/4 panel to roof seams. The other 70 I have has bondo in the same seam area. That is the only car I have ever seen with bondo in that area. i thought they were all leaded. I guess ya learn something new interesting everyday.

Re:[Chevelle-List] (no subject)

2002-04-10 Thread rick schaefer

The plastic vs steel inner fenders has been discussed several times. I don't think
that there was any particular rhyme or reason to which car got what inners. Whatever
supplier hit the dock on any day and whatever car came down the line, got the inners
that were on hand. And several people have mentioned one of each type on supposedly
original cars.

As far as the seam filler, it may have been plant dependent. IE leeds would use one
technique, arlington another. Did you ever try to narrow it down to which years or
plant used a particular method?
-- [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Now that the motor mount /frame bracket questions are answered we may or may
not ever find out why GM used a different frame bracket for the 307 small
block in the 68 thru 72 chevelles. But anyway there are some expert chevelle
people on this net.
I have worked on chevelles a long time, and have aquired much experiance since
my first chevelle in 1965. I'm an old fart huh ? So I thought I'd stir things
up a little and put out a couple more why questions.

Question 1..Why do some chevelles (especially 70s) have plastic inner
fenders and some steel inner fenders ? I've seen two seemingly original cars
with one steel and one plastic on the same car.

Question 2.. Unless you do your own bodywork you may not no what I'm
talking about but here goes. The factory seam between the roof and rear
quarter panels is filled and sanded. Up until just recently I thought the
factory used bondo. Every one I saw was bondo. I bought a 72 malibu shell
that had nice rear quarters to be used on my 71 resto. Upon removal of the 72
rear quarters I found the seam to be leaded in.
First one I have seen. Anyway I started removing the quarter from the 71 and
that wasn't leaded or bondo. That seam was crudly filled with seam sealer
(Kind of caulking) It was originaly a vinyl top car and I guess the factory
figured it didn,t need
exact finishing since it would be covered. Working on a 69 I found it leaded.
So why
do some chevelles have lead, some bondo, some seam sealer ???

Opening bleeder screws will empty the MC. But you will still have some
spillage.

You MUST bench bleed the new MC. There should be a kit and paperwork
on this with the new MC. Because chevelle MC mounts at an angle, you
cannot bleed all of the air out once its installed. If the new MC
doesn't have the kit, your parts store will. Cost me about $3.00 at
Pep Boys for the kit
