I took it and passed a couple of weeks ago. The objectives are the same as
the three separate tests, about 70 questions on each section (not exact, but
about 70). Each section is graded separately at the end, and you need a
passing score in each section. No going back and marking questions. I
found that there was substantial overlap between the topics, with similar
technologies such as ISDN in both the remote access and routing portions,
and multicast in both switching and routing, for example. The objectives
on the Cisco site PDFs for the three separate tests are what you should
know. I found the Exam Cram books helpful. The "Cram notes" inside the
front cover make good flash card material.

The advantages are less cost if you pass, and the ability to share time
amongst the three tests. The disadvantage is that you need to know more
at the same time than cramming for one test at a time. Different people
learn and study differently. I'm of the "Study like crazy and get it
all over with at once" philosophy. I took Support and Foundation on the
same day and passed both a couple of weeks ago. Conquered CCDA and CID
today.

MTU, IPSec-VPN, & e-mail attachment

2000-10-14 Thread Fola96

We recently deployed an IPSec VPN solution using Cylink's NetHawk hardware.
We went with NetHawk because according to Tolly it does 3DES encryption @
wire speed. Anyway, the problem is that when we leave the MTU on the gateway
router at the default 1500, e-mail attachments make it through the NetHawk
VPN box. However when we reduce the MTU to 200, the e-mai attachments do not
make it through the VPN box ALTHOUGH the e-mail itself makes it through.
But, the attachment gets detached in transit.
Below is our current configuration--

H 1--- SNH VPN1--R1 ..
R2--NH VPN 2--H2

H1 & H2 are hosts exchanging e-mail,
S is a switch
NH VPN1 & 2 are NetHawk VPN boxes on either side of the Internet
R1 & R2 are routers on either side of the Internet.

Perhaps, a moe general queston flowing from this is what (if any) are the MTU
or PMTU related issues within a VPN solution.

Thanks.

WFQ & FR

2000-10-14 Thread Fanglo MA

Dear ALL,

I have some congestion found with my Internet with is connected to the
provider via FR. From the setting configurated by ISP, the no fair-queue
is set on the FR link to ISP. I would like to ask if this is any
negative impact on FR with fair queue so that make it be default to FR
setting? What consideration should I consider to implement queueing
policy to help improving congestion in my case? I know I should collect
baseline performance for further evaulation, does anyone can advice how
to collect such information? My router is low-end 2500 cisco running
11.3 feature.

Thank for any help.

Hey I am only on page 65 and I am getting a little ticked off.
I've been waiting for this book for a month now and I finally got it.
(ordered it so I could not look at it before I paid).
ISBN: 0-07-212477

So far there is a lot of assumption from the authors. All is just "thrown"
with little or no explanation.

Chapter 2 answer key (2.10) full of errors
Typo's: too many to mention
Figures on Chapter 3 (page 65) not very well presented (personal opinion)

I had high expectation and was anticipating a really good book.

I will follow up on this but sure would like some feedback.

Daniel

There seems to be some confusion about what a
practicing dentist is. My definition is that this
person is trained properly, has a degree from a school
of dentistry, is licensed by the state. Use a little
maturity and common sense when discussing the issue.

Here's a little mail I received from
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

"He said he was a "practicing dentist", he never said
he was a legitimate,
trained, licensed dentist. No doubt he practices in
the street, behind
buildings and in parks. I'm sure he doesn't take
insurance (HMO coverage,
yes) but he is probably priced very low.

This is a profession where certification *does*
matter!"

And being trained at top school of dentistry in the US
and being licensed by the state of california means
nothing to you? You're taking this cert thing too
far!

CCNP, he charges full price and if you have any
coverage, drop on by. As a matter of fact, he works
at clinics too(as most dentists do) so if you have no
insurance you can still drop on by!

HSRP Lab... :-(

2000-10-14 Thread Bharat Suneja

Hi all,

I was doing a HSRP lab. Two routers have their E0 connected to hub. A Win95
PC is also connected to the hub. S0 of both routers connected to a remote
router with a PC on E0 of remote router. Routing Protocol: EIGRP.

Now, before configuring HSRP on the local routers, if I disconnect E0 on
Router A from the hub, the PC connected to the hub should not be able to
forward packets because its default gateway (Router A) is down.

However, I find that the PC can still communicate with the remote network -
the second router (Router B) forwards the packets!! This is something I
didn't know before - and the OS on the PC is Windows 95!!!

My questions:
1. Is this a Win95 feature ??? (doubtful as it sounds!!)
2. Is this something to do with RDP ???
3. Is this something to do with ARP ??? (PC broadcasts for default gateway
and Router B replies when router A is down??).

If 2 and 3 are true, what's the purpose of HSRP ???

Thanks in advance,

Bharat Suneja

CCNP Specialisation - SNA/IP (SNAM and SNAIP)

2000-10-14 Thread Billha

Has anyone achieved SNA/IP Specialisation ?

Any recommended reading and, or, URLs would be welcome. I am studying for
the first exam, SNAM.

I am suprised that the second exam, SNAIP, recommends sitting FOUR courses
as preparation :

DLSW, FRAS, APPN and CIPT ... which to me sounds harder to achieve than
CCIE !

What are your thougths ?

Bill.

VPN connectivity problem

2000-10-14 Thread RChee

Hey,

Thanks for all the help with the HSRP problem I sent yesterday.  I'm going to look into that this weekend, but right now I have a VPN question to ask.

We have a Cisco PIX 520 Firewall running 5.0.3.  I  need to set it up so that remote VPN clients can get through.  The users on the client machines want to use the Nortel Extranet Access Client.  This client runs IPSec and IKE as well.  Does anyone know if this software will work with the PIX?

We will be using pre-shared keys.  I have a copy of the client software and the closest thing I see to setting a preshared key is a group password.

RE: Not impressed with BSCN Thomas II (book review)

2000-10-14 Thread Daniel Boutet1

Just started reading the book. (100 pages read for the first time)
This comment is only on a first look at the book. If you are reading the
book you will find the mistakes
pretty easily.

If you read below I stated a few places where a few errors where.

Add on to this:

Chapt 4 page 96 figure 4.1 Totally irrelevant. There is also another figure
4-1 on Page 100
Usually there should only be one figure 4-1

Back to reading! Feedback from anyone who is or has read the book is
welcome.
Did anyone actually only read this book to pass the BSCN?
I know it states on the cover "Book Companion"
which probably means "buy another book instead" or "companion is what you
really should have instead of this book"

Just a little frustrated, sorry to the list..

Re: Subnet mask question..

2000-10-14 Thread Clayton Dukes

The easiest thing in the world to do is just memorize the subnet table. If
you do this, then just write out the table when you sit down to take the
test (before you start the test). This way, you're not wasting time figuring
it out. It's right in front of you.

The table is very easy to memorize and will come in handy for the rest of
your career, not just in testing.

here's the link:

http://www.gdd.net/cisco/

Then just click on "Subnet Cheat Sheet"

But I agree, the questions are a bit misleading sometimes.
Happy testing!

Brian,
I hate the way these tests word their questions sometimes. Why don't they
just state the mask as it should be -contiguous bits left to right(except
for wildcard masks ofcourse). If they are going to state the subnet portion
is stealing 11 bits from the host portion of the address why don't they just
state that.

You are exactly right though a /11 subnet mask is 255.224.0.0

Don't let these silly tests screw you up. I think sometimes they try to
impress a point and screw things up. I don't think Cisco is in the business
to have you memorize wrong information. (If you know subnetting in the real
world, you will pass their test questions regarding these issues ~~I would
read Cisco's ACRC book and practice their examples, there is also a great
section on 3com's website on subnetting I highly reccomend).

There are 3 portions of the address (network, subnet, and host)and the subnet
portion is using 11 host bits to subdivide this class b network.

The subnet mask would be /27 or 255.255.255.224not /11.

Re: routing summarization question

2000-10-14 Thread Tom Keough

Hi Jin,
I just read about route summarization a couple days ago and from my little
knowlege I would say the answer is:
172.16.10.0/23
I wrote out the addresses in binary and looked for the "longest match" and
thus the answer above...

We use IRB alot with DSL as well. The above way is sort of a bad way to
do it though, and I will tell you why:

You are mapping multiple PVC's on a single interface. realize their is
*no way* these users can directly contact eachother (like if one wanted to
download a file from the other or whatever). A Bridge group is going to
treat all 3 PVC's as a single bridge port. A rule of bridging is that if
the router receives a packet from a port that is destined out that same
port, it will drop it. You may think of this as a feature, that the users
can't see eachothers network neighborhoods etc.but what you are
doing is blackholing users from eachother. And judging on the size of
your BVI's, you may be blackholing alot of users from eachother and its
probably going to come back to you some day.

Also, nothing stops any of those users above from stealing *any* IP they
want in the bridge groupor as many as they want. You can have
total and complete chaos and you can't stop it. Their are alot of
trade-offs using IRB in a DSL enviroment, and to avoid all the pitfalls is
going to require a certain amount of resources to be used on the router.

Users on different interfaces, but the same BVI, will be able to
communicate, because the router will treat this as two different bridge
ports and bridge between them. Users on different BVI's can communicate,
because the router will "route" between them. But the above scenerio
would never allow users to directly communicate with eachtoher (users on
the same interface and bvi).

Also, I would recommend hard coding the mac-address into the BVI, after
you create it. Looking at the above, you are using the default ARP
timeout, which I think is like 3 hours. When your router reboots, a new
MAC address will be chosen for the BVI. So users who have the old mac
address cached will be dead in the water. Perhaps the cisco sends a
gratuitous arp on reboot for the BVI'sI don't know, but I don't
think all stacks respond to those necessarily.

Also, I would definitly turn off Spanning Tree to those DSL customers
since thats just excess overhead and not needed. Also a subscriber-policy
may be a good idea to apply to each BVI that limits broadcasts to only ARP
packetspeople can do bad things with the other types.

Re: Subnet mask question..

2000-10-14 Thread Brian Lodwick

Brian,
I hate the way these tests word their questions sometimes.

Re: Not impressed with BSCN Thomas II (book review)

Let's hope that the book gets better as I read on. Maybe other reader will
comment on it.
I have other book to accompany this one but I wanted one that contains all
the study material for the exam.

Cisco Router Internetworking 0-07135627-4
Caslow's Bible (Bridges...for CCIE)
Network Design and Case Studies (second ed.)
Giles' All in one Study Guide

I plan to buy Doyle's TCP/IP bible and probably Stevens TCP/IP Illustrated.
But for now I will read Thomas II book

Re: Subnet mask question..

2000-10-14 Thread Craig Columbus

This is a matter of how the question was phrased.
If a class B address had 11 bits of subnetting, then the mask is
255.255.255.224. Why?
Because a class B address has NO bits of subnetting to begin with. You
take the binary,
..., and to that you add 11 bits, and
you'll get:
...1110 or 255.255.255.224.

Does this help?

RE: High Availability. (Maybe OT)

2000-10-14 Thread Aamir Lakhani

No
problem, I have done this plenty of times. You have two switches connected
together via a trunk port. On the server side, Intel makes duel port NIC cards
that can be setup for failover or load balancing. In failover mode when a link
dies dies on one port, the next port becomes active.

  OT)
I am trying to figure out how to impliment a
redundant network design.  The problem I keep running into is the
connection to the server.  I can provide Access redundancy through the
use of two switches.  I can provide some level of server redundancy via
the use of 2 NICs or 2 Servers.  The problem is how to provide
application layer redundancy.  I have been able to prove the network
itself is redundant, but connectivity to servers seems to be where I am having
  trouble with my studies.

From my understanding I cannot do etherchannel
accross switches, and more over, I remember that etherchannel does not
provide redundancy because if one link goes down the whole channel goes
down.  Please correct me if this is wrong.

  Example:
Realizing that the expectation that a
server stay up all the time would still be a single point of failure.  In
the event of a network failure on a switch, how do I provide network access to
  the Server.

Proposed is to connect the server via a second
NIC or second port on a dual or quad NIC to a secondary access switch.

Problem, maintaing the same layer 3 address
accross both switches in the advent that one link should fail, the server
  maintains reachability.

Giving that in this case I would be talking about
a solaris system, I have thought about using simple scripts to watch for the
interface to go down and reconfigure.  I am curious if anyone knows of
any hardware/software solutions for doing this?   I am guessing that
I am not the first person to ask for something like this.

RE: Anyone's comments on BCSN class?

2000-10-14 Thread Daniel Boutet1

I am doing self study and bought a few of the books you mentioned.

The first on I have attacked is the one by Thomas II

Hey I am only on page 65 and I am getting a little ticked off.
I've been waiting for this book for a month now and I finally got it.
(ordered it so I could not look at it before I paid).
ISBN: 0-07-212477

So far there is a lot of assumption from the authors. All is just "thrown"
with little or no explanation.

Chapter 2 answer key (2.10) full of errors
Typo's: too many to mention
Figures on Chapter 3 (page 65) not very well presented (personal opinion)

I had high expectation and was anticipating a really good book.
It is early in the book and early this Saturday morning but I sure hope it
gets better.

I will follow up on this, but sure would like some feedback.

Just returned from BSCN with MentorTech. I did not study any of the material
beforehand but did meet the prerequisites. Seeing that you already have CCNP
you should be quite comfortable.

At issue is always the makeup of the class members. If many have the "deer
in the headlights look" the instructor may have to change the pace of the
class. Subnetting and VLSM took a day and a half. That is listed as a
prerequisite. I don't know if that is the normal pace. We did feel a little
rushed at the end. Judging by my routing table many of the groups did not
finish their labs. They cut out at five - done or not.
1) Recommendation to all. Expect to be introduced to a lot of material. It
would be a rare person who would know it well by week's end. Expect to spend
a lot of time in further study. I have some routers so I will be able to
redo the labs. They do a lot with a few boxes. A good idea would be to
review each days material in the evening. I'll be making up flash cards from
the objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter.
2) Prep. The more that you know - the more in depth your questions can be.
Great sources are CCO, and the Cisco Press books that cover routing. Jeff
Doyle, Bassam Halabi, Tom Thomas, the EIGRP book, and ACRC. If you know all
that material then you don't need the class.
3) No.

Enjoy!

Re: Can I picks a PIX?

2000-10-14 Thread Evgeny Babanin

Dear "Cthulu, CCIE Candidate""

a) Correct me if I'm wrong: You can not make "conventional" router's to
pick up DHCP address on the interface, though you can do this with DSL
routers and latest flavours of IOS for this routers

b) If it was possible - how are you going to configure interfaces if you
erased nvram? In all ciscos I saw if you erase config and then reload a
router, it comes up with all interfaces shutted down - so they can not pick
up anything from the network.

much better option is to save the config you want at start up in the flash
as init.conf for example and copy it in to start-up and reload router every
time you want go to the initial step.

it is shame, they do not ask such things on the CCIE written, isn't it? :-))

If you do not want to implement BGP, you need to build up a VPN through
secondary provider to primary provider and
tune up some simple routing protocol like RIP or IGRP.

RE: (boot) mode?

2000-10-14 Thread Ashfaq Aslam

Brain,

I had the same problem a few days ago. This is a tricky one!! It could be
one of two things: Either the physical Flash modules are not the same
memory size or Flash image is corrupted.

For me it was the first one. Originally when I purchased the Router and it
was working fine until I decided to upgrade it to a newer version of
Enterprise IOS. I did not make a backup copy of the original IOS from the
Router. Silly me !! When I did upgrade the Enterprise IOS to a newer
version it kept going to Router(boot) mode. I tried to load several
different IOS versions onto the router varying from 3MB to 13MB in flash
image size but still the same problem. I then did a "show version" and the
router mentioned it had 16MB Flash memory. After spending most of the night
trying to work out the problem I decided to open the router and check both
Flash modules separately. The first module was 8MB and the second was 4MB.
My image size was 13MB. But when I did a "show version" it showed 16MB of
flash. Confused ?? Don't ask me why ! Since I had some spare flash
modules laying around I replaced the 4MB with 8MB. Flash was 16MB.
Booted up the router and installed the Enterprise IOS again. Golden !! It
worked.

Solution: Try loading the original IOS back onto the Router. If this
doesn't work load an IOS smaller then your Flash memory size. If still no
luck check the Flash modules separately.

Hope this helps...

Re: WHIZZ KIDS WHO HAVE THE CCIE number

2000-10-14 Thread Nick Tucker

>Here is a little poser for you all. Who is / was the youngest CCIE and what
>was his / her age when they attained the CCIE?

After reading a bunch of responses on this thread, I wanted to throw in my
experiences..because it seemed kinda fun.

Jumping back to the years I was 14ish, I was messing with several Commodore
64s running Image BBS with the coolest ProgramFile (called DOORS in the pc
world) there was: Masters Empire! Most of my time was generally spent
customizing the image system, since it was quite easy to do. Anyone
remember "cursor dancing" in the messages? Using the british pound key and
some keycodes? Fun times...
Graduated to the Amiga shortly after. Wanted to stick with Commodore and I
was so AntiPC you wouldn't belive it. The Amiga is one fun fun box, but
even I will admit past desktop video and games it isn't much use.
Finally did get a PC in 92 or so and have put together more than I care to
talk about since then.

Its hard to comphrehend(?) what 14 year olds are doing these days with web
pages, networking, etc. But its all relativethats exactly how we were
looked at around 10 years ago. At the time it was nothing to us, it was
our passion, yet everyone else was going wow. Now, its no different,
its just us looking back on them going wow.

I do agree, with whoever said they were 20 and felt like they were behind,
I feel behind as well. Any time thats not productive is wasted, imo,
within reason of course ;)

Now I'm 25, taking the lab inside of 3 months now, so sure I feel
behind--but any extra modivation you can get is all ammo to become better.
The bottom line is live and learn, and look out for yourself because noone
else will. :D

We use bridging quite a bit in our ADSL networks.
Here is a sample.

bridge irb
 bridge 64 protocol ieee
 bridge 64 route ip
interface BVI1
 ip address 172.64.0.254 255.255.255.0
 no ip route-cache
 no ip mroute-cache
interface Serial0.1 multipoint
frame-relay map bridge 35 broadcast IETF
frame-relay map bridge 34 broadcast IETF
frame-relay map bridge 33 broadcast IETF
 bridge-group 64

I hope this helps. I usually forget the bridge 64
route ip, statement.

Let me know if this helps.

Re: High Availability. (Maybe OT)..the best in the world..

2000-10-14 Thread Pradeep Kumar

I have lab tested all the devices that you have mentioned in here. the best of the lot
is from a company called Alteon Web sytems. That equipment is terrific.
If you go to their website, you can pull out some white papers.

I can send u some lab results on these if u so desire.

Actually Cisco has a Content Caching Switch (CSS Something for the model)
That is a very nice unit, they are a variety of different sizes, and the
entry price is comparable to a LocalDirector. The Content Switch, will
allow you to be alot more granular in traffic forwarding.

Re: BVIs, IRBs, and L3 Switching

2000-10-14 Thread Brandon J. Carroll

We use bridging quite a bit in our ADSL networks.
Here is a sample.

bridge irb
 bridge 64 protocol ieee
 bridge 64 route ip
interface BVI1
 ip address 172.64.0.254 255.255.255.0
 no ip route-cache
 no ip mroute-cache
interface Serial0.1 multipoint
frame-relay map bridge 35 broadcast IETF
frame-relay map bridge 34 broadcast IETF
frame-relay map bridge 33 broadcast IETF
 bridge-group 64

I hope this helps. I usually forget the bridge 64
route ip, statement.

Let me know if this helps.
