Just an idea. Do you already have the old type commands configured (aaa
authentication include etc) as well as new type (aaa authentication match

I believe, but never tried that they both work, but can't be used

Perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree, just stabbing in the dark to be

off topic: PIX DHCP (client) Implementation?

2001-03-31 Thread Dropped Packet

Is anyone aware of any 'unique' characteristics regarding the DHCP (client)
implementation on PIX 5.x?

I tried assigning an IP to the outside interface via dhcp with a linksys
switch dhcp server and it failed. When I plugged it straight into my cable
modem and repeated the process, it worked just fine. Perhaps the linksys
dhcp server component is flawed somehow (even though it works just fine for
assigning addresses to other DHCP clients (wintel boxes))??
I replicated the failure three times and also ran debug on the PIX dhcp
function with no useful results.

(Given the rampant rumors re instability, I already placed knee pads under
the chassis, but oddly enough that didn't help.)

The only thing I could find online was the following excerpt:

Note: Use of the DHCP client feature to acquire an IP address from a
generic DHCP server is not supported.

(source:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/iaabu/pix/pix_v53/config/advanced.htm#xtocid57942

)

[So can I assume that my cable company has invested some portion of my huge
monthly bills in a "name brand" DHCP server?]

Thanks for any info.

3 things to consider when asking for the 'good' IOS version to use:

 1. what purpose is the termserver going to serve?
 2. how much flash is onboard? (although apparently you can use a
compression utility to squeeze a larger image into smaller flash)
 3. what features do you want to want to use/experiment with?

anything marked GD from the 12.0 version tree should work fine.

The simulation code you are given treats the Ethernet as a star =
topology LAN with a central repeater and a line to each node. All =
traffic appears on every line. The simulation assumes that the longest =
distance from one station to another across an ethernet is 400m, and the
=
signal travels at 80% of the speed of light, which is 300 million metres
=
per second. Determine D for this network (D is the propagation delay =
  across the network).=20
  Conduct simulations of this network at 10%, 40%, 80%, 95% and 120% =
nominal utilization. Utilization is the proportion of the time that the
=
ethernet is carrying successful packets. The nominal utilization is the
=
utilization which would be achieved if all packets were successfully =
carried. For example, 40% nominal utilisation will be achieved when =
  packets arrive at the rate 0.4 * 10,000,000 / (250*8) =3D 2000 packets =
per second. Some of these factors mean that the actual proportion of =
time during which the network is busy could be greater or less than 40%.
=

In each of these simulations, you should measureor investigate:=20

a.. the effective utilization rate (only count bits successfully =
  sent),=20
b.. the rate at which packets are rejected by the ethernet access =
layer (also known as the packet loss rate),=20
c.. packet throughput (ie. 1 - the loss rate),=20
d.. collision rate (collisions per packet),=20
e.. average number of packets involved in a collision,=20
f.. the average number of collisions experienced by a packet given =
that it experiences one collision, and=20
g.. the average delay experienced by a packet.=20
In addition, repeat the simulations at 40% and 80% for a network with =
100 times the propagation delay, as might be experienced if the network
=
was extended over too wide a physical distance.=20

Note that the package length in the program is in bytes, and some =
figures may not be explicitly designed in the program, it requires you =
to investigate from the program execution statistics.=20

  Submission Requirements=20

The submission should be in the form of essay. In the essay, you
should=20

  1. determine the number of bits which can be transmitted in the time D,
=
given that the transmission rate of the network is 10 Mbit/s, the =
average packet length is 250 bytes, and the nominal utilization level of
=
  the network is 80%.=20

  2. tabulate or plot these resultsfor the network of LAN at different =
nominal utilization. Also, you should comment on the significance of the
=
results for the successful management of an ethernet LAN.=20

  3. tabulate or plot the results for the network (ie, 100 times the =
propagation delays) but only at 40% and 80% of the nominal utilization.
=
You shall comment on the implication of these experiments

Well, took the test (finally) this morning and passed with a 946 (out of =

it's merits, it just simplified things too much. Of course when I =
started this months ago I didn't think so, but I am ever so much smarter =

Time for a cold beer me thinks - sure it's only 10:13am, but as Lionel =
Hutz would say "yeah, but I've been up for days!"

If anyone is looking for advice, best I can say is that personally I =
didn't think the test was that tough or worded poorly, but that could =
have just be my lot of questions. Can't really tell you what to focus on =
as the test was kind of all over. I didn't get as many Frame Relay =
questions as I had anticipated, which was fortunate for me as my FR =
knowledge sucks. It's an area I definitely need a better handle on. As =
others have said before me, READ the question, if you skim, like I have =
a tendency to do, you'll regret it.=20

Anyway, after my beer I think I'll look into where to go next. Even =
though I know a lot of people say the CCNA test is simple and anyone =
could pass it, I'm still pleased that I managed to do so. I think I have =
enough theoretical knowledge and hands on experience not to cheapen the =
cert. Least ways I hope so :)

Anyway, have a good weekend everyone! And thanks millions for all the =

Re: Stupid question

2001-03-31 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

I'll be quite honest and say I haven't done a detailed investigation
of the IOS implementation restrictions here. My intuition would be
that IOS has one ARP cache per subnet per physical router, and having
multiple router ports in the same broadcast subnet confuses the ARP
mechanism. On a first scan of RFC 1812, I don't see any inherent
architectural limitation on more than one interface in a subnet on a
physical router.

I suspect the reason that multiple serial interfaces can work is that
they don't routinely ARP, since they don't have to resolve MAC
addresses they don't have.

However, just in the last few days, we read on this list that serial
interfaces can have 2 or more in the same subnet. I think one poster said
there was a maximum of 6?

Which would be consistent with the maximum interfaces in load
sharing. I suspect there are some IOS internal games here, where an
(internal only) virtual interface describes the next hop for a
destination to which there is load sharing, and some type of
recursion takes place (perhaps interacting with a cache) to decide
which physical interface to use.

These are guesses, however.

But ethernet interfaces cannot share a subnet.

This isn't a stupid question, it's a very important point to make. If
you are routing, each interface on the router must be in its own subnet.
Otherwise routing would not work. If you're bridging, then the bridged
interfaces are in the same subnet but you don't specifically assign an
  IP address to those interfaces.

I'm guessing that you're really asking the former question: in a
routing situation can two different interfaces be in the same subnet,
   and the answer is no.

Re: Protocols on frame relay switch

2001-03-31 Thread John Neiberger

The serial ports will 'see' each other, but if you're configuring the hub
router as a frame relay switch you are no longer routing IP through the
router, you are switching frame relay frames from one interface to the
other. In that scenario, an IP routing protocol is unnecessary because you
are not doing IP routing.

The router is switching frames based on DLCI, so this is a layer-2 function.
It is no more concerned with IP addresses than a provider's frame relay
switch in a real frame relay cloud. They forward frames based on layer two
information only.

I know I keep repeating the same concept, but I just woke up and can't form
thoughts very well. g

HTH,
John

What does that mean? I thought 2 serial ports should see each other
because
  they are local...

The answer is a very easy one. You need to download Cisco IOS with
either DES or 3DES. Furthermore, you will need to do this:

  line vty 0 4
  transport input ssh

That will do the trick. If you want to be even more secure, implement
TACACS server instead of local account. By the way "transport input
ssh"
essentially cut-off telnet to your router. I've heard of newbies in
this group suggesting of implementing access-list to prevent. That's
not
the right way to do it. Another thing, remember Cisco IOS only supports
SSH version 1 and keep in mind that SSH 1 does have security
vulnerabilities. F___ those bastards at Cisco for not implementing SSH2

Re: Stupid question

2001-03-31 Thread John Neiberger

This is all new information to me! I had no idea that I could place two
separate serial interfaces into the same subnet, so I just tried it. I set
up two back to back cables between two routers and put both lines on the
same subnet. I was amazed that it didn't freak out.

I noticed that when I would ping from one to the other the router did
per-packet load balancing regardless of 'ip route-cache' setting, which
makes sense. This really doesn't have anything to do with route caching or
fast switching.

Now I just tried running OSPF across these links and the routers didn't
appear to be confused. They each see the other as being adjacent on two
different interfaces, but they don't really care. They just put both routes
into the routing table.

I suppose this is no different than if I were to configure a loopback
interface on each side and then use ip unnumbered on both links. In that
case they'd also be in the same subnet.

Interesting, thanks for pointing this out to me!

John

RE: PIX Performance

2001-03-31 Thread Hartnell, George

How's about a little 'real-life' observation on a 515UR/failover package:

Problem:
external limited to ~850Kbit/s since install. Normal range, 2.5-3.5Mbits/s
internal ether on 515 does not exceed 140-160KBytes/s
internal ether has unusual number of IP transport retransmissions.
no apparent loops/collisions/protocol/hardware problems (Fluke OneTouch)
external ether on 515 sends 2.5Mbits/s+ to external IMux'ed T1's fine.
load: well under specs.
no NAT
5.3

internal -- hub/switch -- 100Mb/full -- 515 -- 10BaseT --border router
--T1X3 --external

N.G. Sniffer on internal and external side of 515. Fluke OneTouch as well.

Somehow, it seems that, despite the theoretical, this PIX is throttling the
bandwidth at around 850Kbits/s. The MRTG graph is most unusual and
certainly shows the pattern of a throttle of some sort. Plateau shape, no
spikes. Config normal, as far as a couple of us can tell, certainly nothing
bazaar. I've tried disabling the failover, yes. No NAT *may*, I've heard
speculation, need another kind of treatment. Seems like '0 0 0 0' with
statics wouldn't kill the throughput...

How or why it's down that has been a baffler for a couple of days/nights.
Maybe it's broke.

If anyone might have a suggestion on what to look for ('show what?)|(debug
what?) I'd listen. Otherwise, handy syslog indicates the thing is doing
it's job. A "must have" device.

However, to keep internal peace, I may have to not have until I can get a
solution.

Best, G.

IDS monitoring Port Mirroring/SPAN

2001-03-31 Thread Scott Nelson

OK, here's the deal,

I need to monitor a T-3 before and after a Firewall
So:ISP---7206Switch-FirewallSwitchRouterLANs

with the 2 different IDSes ( Intrusion Detection System ) hanging off of a
monitor port on each switch.

I was starting to get collisions on the firewall and the router with a 100Mb
hub so, I figured if I wack 2 Cisco 2912XL switches in there and set
everything for 100Mb Full, and that would end that issue and it has, but has
raised another one.

So far, at the switch points, the switches are running at 80% according to
the LEDs on the front, with our current bandwidth at about ~20Mb.
What are the LEDs measuring is my first question?
If it is the CPU utilization, I have a feeling it is because of Span/port
monitor that the CPU has to duplicate the packets and ship them out the
monitor port.

My 2nd question is: If this link goes up to the max 40+ Mb, will I start
dropping packets between the router(s) and the Firewall?
Will I drop packets going to the IDSes?

We have a Cat 5000 sitting around so, I figured, why not just use it?
I tried to enable two different Port spans on a Cat 5000 and it will only
allow me to do one at a time. I figured a Cat 5000 would have enough CPU
power to do the job. I was going to create 3 VLANs, one VLAN before the
firewall and one after and one for management. But if I can only do (1) span
at a time, this isn't going to work either.

Suggestions?

Or am I worrying for nothing? Will the 2912's do it or do I need to go the
3500XL or 4000 series switches to do this? What is everyone else doing?

Scotty

do NOT Teraterm Pro, it doesn't work. The reason is that I think Cisco

Jake,

Technically, not all Cisco switches are Catalysts, only the LAN switches, WAN switches
aren't (well...they ARE switches..)

Anyway:

IOS:2900XL, 3500XL, 4840G, 6000
Cat OS: 2900G, 4000, 5000, 6000, 8500
Menus: 1900, 2820, 3000 (3100, 3200), 3900 Token Ring

Does this sum things up for you?

This one's kicking my ass. Should be simple, but apparently it isn't. I've
got three routers in a frame relay configuration: R3 is the hub, R4 and R5
are the spokes. For some reason the routes aren't being exchanged the way
they should be, in spite of the fact that all the OSPF adjacencies *appear*
to be there. R5 isn't getting any OSPF routes, and yet R4 (which has the
exact same configuration) is getting a couple from R3. Below you'll find
the configs, routing tables, and neighbor statuses for all three routers.

Re: OSPF over FR - stop me before my head starts bleeding

2001-03-31 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

Below you'll find the FR switch configuration (important parts, anyway).
Also, s0.2 on R3 is a point-to-point PVC to another router (R6).

In the last hour, I've actually gotten the OSPF to work correctly by using
"ip ospf priority" statements. What was happening was that R4 (a spoke) was
always taking on the role of DR, and since R5 couldn't talk to R4, it wasn't
receiving any O routes. I've now made it so that R3 is always the DR. I
think a DR is necessary because it's a multipoint network - similar to an
ethernet network in an addressing sense.

However, I still have a problem - R5 can't ping R4. I've added map
statements to no avail. R5 knows all the routes, but either it's not
sending packets out its S0 interface, or R3 isn't routing them on R5's
behalf.

Route filtering - reprise

2001-03-31 Thread Kevin Wigle

Dear Group,

A while ago I brought a problem to the group re: two networks on the same
wire, (prime and secondary on the router e0 interface) and using policy
routing so that one went out one serial and the other went out the second
serial.

Neither LAN should go out the other's serial (or come in). Also the routes
should be advertised such that the core should not send traffic down the
wrong pipe.

All sorts of things were tried but got messed up due to the secondary
address. Finally, using 2 ospf processes and 2 eigrp processes got the
"job" done. A total of 4 routing processes.

However, that didn't sit right and I have being trying to do it in BGP.

I have a config that works. It was done on a 2611 router with 6 ethernet
(instead of serial). Here are the relevent parts.

This works great.

HOWEVER.

Always one of these

I have uncovered a "quirk" or bug that I can't find on CCO. Getting ready
to open a Tac case on this one.

If the router is reloaded, after it's up and just before the "Press return
to get started!" line - I see this:

"Secondary addresses not allowed with negotiated addresses"

Processor board ID JAB024801KB (751772336)
M860 processor: part number 0, mask 49
Bridging software.
X.25 software, Version 3.0.0.

2 Serial(sync/async) network interface(s)
32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)
Secondary addresses not allowed with negotiated addresses

Press RETURN to get started!

and sure enough, the secondary address on E1/0 is gone.

I can put it back in and the router does not complain. Save the config and
everything is happy again! (until the next reload)

Does anyone have a handle on that one?? Like what address is being
negotiated??

Hi,

I used "CIT Cisco Internetworking Troubleshooting" by Thomas M. Thomas and
CCNP Support Study Guide by Todd Lammle. These books were a great help, I
also read a few chapters of the Cisco CIT book.

Hope this helps, good luck on you studies.

Re: Stupid question

2001-03-31 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

The limit on Cisco routers is 4 Serials in the same subnet... but my
question is:

What problem does that solve? Why would I want/need to do that?

My gut tells me that this is not really a planned-for limit, and sort
of happened.

Any thoughts?

As a wild guess, it might be to allow the support of NBMA
hub-and-spoke subnets that have more than one hub interface. Not sure
how useful this would be -- I tend to think that the marginal
improvement in reliability of having more than one interface of the
same router in the same subnet is very small. If I need multiple
hubs, multiple routers become appropriate.

Why not any DR/BDR? The default network type for multipoint is NBMA which
forms adjacencies. What we need here is a dump of the show ip ospf neigh

I've

they should be, in spite of the fact that all the OSPF adjacencies

That's true, so he pretty much had 2 choices in that situation. He could
either switch the OSPF network type to multipoint on the hub and the spokes,
or he could insert neighbor statements. Both ways would work.

to open a Tac case on this one.

If the router is reloaded, after it's up and just before the "Press return

"Secondary addresses not allowed with negotiated addresses"

 Processor board ID JAB024801KB (751772336)

 Bridging software.

32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)
Secondary addresses not allowed with negotiated addresses

 Press RETURN to get started!

and sure enough, the secondary address on E1/0 is gone.

I can put it back in and the router does not complain. Save the config and
everything is happy again! (until the next reload)

Does anyone have a handle on that one?? Like what address is being
 negotiated??

This is problably well know bug in 12.1.2T IOS.

 OK, here's the deal,

I need to monitor a T-3 before and after a Firewall
 So:ISP---7206Switch-FirewallSwitchRouterLANs

with the 2 different IDSes ( Intrusion Detection System ) hanging off of a
 monitor port on each switch.

I was starting to get collisions on the firewall and the router with a
100Mb
hub so, I figured if I wack 2 Cisco 2912XL switches in there and set
everything for 100Mb Full, and that would end that issue and it has, but
has
 raised another one.

But if I can only do (1)
span
at a time, this isn't going to work either.

 Suggestions?

Or am I worrying for nothing? Will the 2912's do it or do I need to go the
3500XL or 4000 series switches to do this? What is everyone else doing?

 Scotty

Re: AGS+(DTE) to 2523(DCE) back-to-back

2001-03-31 Thread Circusnuts

remember also- the AGS will not allow you to configure clockrate unless you
physically have a cable connected to the interface.

Something I learned after hours with my old AGS one evening

 Hi,

I've got a AGS+ connected to a 2501 and 2502. The cross over cables you
are
using, which side is DTE and which side is DCE. This matters because on
the
DCE side of the cable, you have to add a clock rate statement for the link
to work. My cables, the AGS side is DCE and the 2500 side is DTE, so I
did
have to fiddle with the jumpers on the AGS (sorry, its been about a year
since I did it, so I don't remember exactly which jumpers I moved).

I will post my configs so you can see how I have mine configured. If you
need more help, let me know.

 AGS+

 interface Serial0
 ip address 192.168.2.2 255.255.255.252
 clockrate 56000

 2501

 interface Serial1
 description Serial to AGS
 ip address 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.252

 Hi,

For 3months I have been trynig to have my AGS+(DTE) talk to my 2523(DCE).
I am at my fourth back-to-back cable.
The 2523 is sending keepalives but the AGS+ is not.
AGS+ is DTE BY DEFAULT, so I didn't tinker with its jumpers.
Have someone ever made an AGS+(DTE) talk to a 25xx(DCE)?

 Please help me.

ISDN simulator problem

2001-03-31 Thread Fred Danson

Hey Group,

I just got my Teltone ISDN simulator in the mail, but I can't seem to get it
working. The simulator, by default, is setup to use Basic-ni1. I connected
both of my routers directly to the simulator using straight-through cat5
cables. I then typed no shut on the bri0 interfaces and set the isdn
switch-type as basic-ni1 on both of the routers.

When I type show isdn status, I get this:

Router#show isdn status
The current ISDN Switchtype = basic-ni1
ISDN BRI0 interface
Layer 1 Status:
DEACTIVATED
Layer 2 Status:
Layer 2 NOT Activated
Layer 3 Status:
No Active Layer 3 Call(s)
Activated dsl 0 CCBs = 0
Total Allocated ISDN CCBs = 0

With my basic configuration, shouldn't the layer 2 be working? Can anyone
spot any problems with my setup?

Thanks in advance,
Fred

Re: ISDN simulator problem

2001-03-31 Thread Nigel Taylor

Fred,
My first question would be which model did you get? The ILS 2000
comes with support for both U and ST BRI interfaces, whereas the
Demonstrator only supports the U interface. What does this mean...?

You'll need two NT1's in order to make your connection if this is the case.

HTH

Nigel.
