Re: Serial number [7:43211]

2002-05-04 Thread Michael

Did you look on the back of the router? There's a name plate (usually) with
a number
something like xxx JGB x (I forget exactly what, but there's usually a J
in there
somewhere). Lots of times the enable password is the chassis serial number.

Do mean if I have 2 6509 with MSFC2/PFC2's, I
configure STP for say odd vlans to go to the first MSFC and EVEN
VLAN's to the SECOND MSFC ? This is done all the time.. read up on MISTP
on cco. Basically you map vlans to instances of spanning tree protocol
also you can use the older way of setting STP priority on a per vlan basis
for each vlan with round-robin vlan staggering on msfc's like (vlan 1
bridge-priority can be 1, on msfc 1 and 65000 on
vlan 2, and VICE VERSA for msfc 2)

2002-05-04 Thread Chuck

saw this one come through the other day:

One Cisco distributor on hand in Florida summed up the problem this way:
We buy Cisco gear at 42 points off [list] but routinely see it being dumped
by one carrier for 45 points or more. Given that, there's no way that little
guys can compete.

Recognizing that smaller partners are key to penetrating tens of thousands

that this action stop. It has even gone so far as to indicate that it will
not tolerate those who don't live up to the spirit of their contracts and
stop doing business with them in the manner in which it does today.

Me thinking: I'll keep that in mind next time Cisco beats me in a contest by
selling directly to my customer at several points off below what I can do.

Re: DC Meeting - Router Roast Saturday [3:4657] CANCELED [7:43290]

2002-05-04 Thread Bruce Evry

Hello,

First I'd like to thank Tom Trygar for letting people know that
the DC Meeting was cancelled.

We are still in North Carolina. After the Lab, which was my first
look at the new One Day Lab, we went to visit some friends over in the
city of Wilson. The next morning our Suburban would not start. Turns out
that the gas pump, which sits on top of the gas tank, was shorted out by
the sending unit, which sits inside the gas tank. (in short we were lucky
not to have blown ourselves up...)

The truck is towed away, but the parts won't be in until Monday.
Very luckily we have some very good friends to stay with.

The only E-mail from Cisco was one saying to look on the website
for my scores. Since I do not have my secret Cisco password memorized, I
figure I'll have to wait til I get home to find out that I didn't pass.
I definitely did better than the previous two tries, mostly due to
a lot of last-minute practise on Howard's Gettlabs racks. They gave me my
first real experience with ATM switches and some good ISDN practise as
well. He's got some pretty good labs to work through as well!

Anyway, my thanks to everyone here, and I will reschedule the
Router Roast as soon as possible.

Yours Truly - Bruce Evry

OT: Real Life Wireless Question [7:43293]

2002-05-04 Thread Marko Milivojevic

I have one question that most probably doesn't fit into any studies
here, but there are a lot of knowlegable people here that might help.

What is the difference between Aironet bridges and aironet access
points? Bridges are, obviously, more expensive and that's not my point.

Can you use two AP's (AIR-AP352E2R-E-K9 for example) on two remote
locations and bridge two LAN's over them?

Post answers directly to me, if inapropriate for the list. Thanks in

That's an interesting article I'm going to have to forward to my co-workers.
Thanks.

I can say we have had the same problem with MCI and ATT, but we have beaten
them to get wins, not on price, but on the rapport and confidence we
establish with a customer and the core competency of our engineers. I can't
blame them for dumping though, because you do need to keep your engineers
working, and a little money from the services side is better than losing the
whole job altogether. I was just working on an international job, and when
we quoted our HW at 4 points, the UK office we were working with almost
died! They couldn't believe how bad it has become in US, as they still get
15 points regularly!

It's good to see that Cisco is still talking about it's channel though, as
there are plenty of companies that have tried to go direct and cut out the
channel because of the economy. *cough* *cough* Oracle *cough*

I assume you are referring to the fact that your DSL is PPPoE DSL (You have
to install the EnterNet DSL software on your computer if you want to access
the DSL Gateway and connect to the internet (which also means you use a User
Name/Password combination to connect) correct!?!

If so, what model PIX do you have?

The 501/506 models support PPPoE under 6.2.1.

RE: Configuring Pix with EnterNet DSL [7:43302]

2002-05-04 Thread Mark Odette II

Keep in mind that you will be *REPLACING* your workstation with the PIX for
PPPoE connectivity. You will no longer need the client software on your
workstation; your workstation(s) will be on whatever Private Subnet you
choose/assign to the 'Inside Interface', and PAT or NAT Overload on the
'Outside Interface' will be the way the workstation(s) reach the internet.

With that in mind, you should be able to figure out the configuration of the
PIX, as it's pretty straight forward.

For myself, I have the Enhanced DSL package from Ma Bell, which means I
don't have to worry about PPPoE, and I get 5 IPs for home use.

Before I used the PIX though, I had a 1750 with the WIC-1ENET card
configured, and similar VPDN commands were used to make the PPPoE
negotiation work under the Basic DSL account I started out with. For this
reason, this is why I think you shouldn't have a problem getting it working.

Good luck!

Mark

I recently installed the Aironet 350, however, I'm not expert.

It is a little confusing, the bridge can actually act as an access point in
addition to only being a bridge. The software for the products allows you
to set how the product will work.

Does this help? What are you trying to do? Maybe I can help better if I
know what it is you want to accomplish.

What is the difference between Aironet bridges and aironet access

Can you use two AP's (AIR-AP352E2R-E-K9 for example) on two remote
locations and bridge two LAN's over them?

Re: CCIE in 3-6 Months from cisco Interesting [7:43306]

2002-05-04 Thread Eric

Typo - I don't think so!

I knew a guy who was hired by Cisco to go overseas because of his language
skills. This was just before the BIG Cisco layoff's started. Anyhow, he
went from zero to CCNP in a couple of months and then became a statistic.
But it went something like this. Live, breath and eat trainingThrow you
into the TAC and then live, breath, and eat training. Throw you into the TAC
and then live, breath, and eat training. Kinda get the idea.

Don't take my word for it. Let me quote Michael Purcell, Quadruple CCIE
#4110

I joined the TAC (Cisco Technical Assistance Center) straight out of
graduate school in September 1997.

Being a TAC engineer was like trying to drink from a fire hydrant because
of all the technologies and products we were required to learn. So, after I
felt I had a handle on those ten months later, I began studying for the CCIE
lab.

As fate would have it, I passed the Routing and Switching CCIE lab on my
one-year anniversary date with Cisco, and was an SE less than one month
later.

cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/ccie_program/spotlight.html

He only studied two months for the lab specifically he says. So much for two
years of hands on experience.. Remember when you have full-time free
training with unlimited access to ALL the equipment plus the mentoring of
in-house CCIE's how can you NOT achieve CCIE quickly.

The whole purpose of this job listed at Cisco is to become a CCIE. The only
thing they don't tell you up front is that you'll probably be paid at
$.50cent's on the dollar for what a regular CCIE earns - that's why they
want college kids is my guess. Just makes good business sense I suppose.
Instead of hiring back all those high priced and well seasoned CCIE's that
were laid off from Cisco, just quickly pump out some new one's at half
price!!!

Ring... Ring... Ring

Hello, this is Mary with Cisco CCIE Sales. May I help you?

Yah, I'd like to get the two for a dollar order please. Oh and can I get
that to go too! :-)

Re: CCIE in 3-6 Months from cisco Interesting [7:43306]

2002-05-04 Thread Michael L. Williams

It's not in Cisco's best interest to crank out CCIEs and I doubt that's what
they're doing (or going to do) After all, this is a job posting, and I
doubt they're going to hire and train enough people to make an impact in the
total number of CCIEs out there. (i.e. they may hire 5, 10, hell maybe even
50 people, say, and so you're only taking 5/10/50 more CCIEs on top of the
7400 existing CCIEs ... not enough to impact the overall market/demand for
CCIEs, IMHO). I agree with another poster here that, even spending everyday
at work for Cisco studying isn't enough to get through the new CCIE
written, much less the lab.

As far as the devaluing of the CCIE, I've see ramblings of this ever since I
joined Groupstudy, and I believe that it's mostly just alot of talk. Sure,
CCIEs aren't pulling in as high a salary as they were 2 years ago, but most
of that is due to the dot-bomb thing coming to an end as well as the job
market/economy of the last year or so. Two things can devalue the cert:
The number of CCIEs skyrocketing and/or people being able to attain the CCIE
without being qualified. I don't think anyone will argue that the CCIE
written/lab combo pretty much keeps paper CCIEs from becoming a reality.
As far as the number of CCIEs skyrocketing, if I recall correctly, when I
first started working on Cisco certification there were around 6000 CCIEs.
Now there are around 7400 (worldwide). That's certainly not skyrocketing.
Compare that to MSCEs where there was such a flood of new MSCEs on the
market that simply supply/demand took over, and all of a sudden MSCEs were a
dime a dozen (no offense to people with MSCEs, just making a point about the
numbers).

Also, I don't agree with the claim that the CCIEs best days are behind it.
Although many felt that the new one-day lab was going to open the floodgates
for paper CCIEs, I don't recall reading any posts by people saying the new
lab was a breeze. Also, any of the level of difficulty that may have been
lost going to the one-day format is definitely going to be made up for by
the new format of the written. As has been posted here more recently (by
either Bernard or Dennis right after they took the beta), the failure rate
of the written is definitely going to go up with this new exam.

Just my 2 cents

It should work just fine. Haven't tested DHCP in 6.2
but have set up PIX outside interface up as DHCP
client in past. The only minor problem I see is that I
don't think there is a way to change the MAC address
if they restrict DHCP via MAC address, but that might
not effect you.
