2002-09-01 Thread YASSER ALY

Rate-limiting is what we call policing and it is done from the ISP side.
It is bi-directional so you can rate limit input & output. You can define
what is the policy to be followed when traffic is within range and what
to be done once exceeded like pass, mark, drop.

Traffic-shapping is done from the client side and it is unidirectional (
Controlling the outgoing traffic from an interface. Shapping helps when 2
sites are communicating with each other, one of them is 1M while the
other is 256K, traffic shapping would be defined from the 1M side inorder
not to flood the 256K link and lots or retransmission occurs.

IMA group on MGX 8850 [7:52472]

2002-09-01 Thread Mohamed Elkomy

Dear all,

I've a problem when trying to delelte an IMA group on MGX 8250First of
all I try the following :

1- delport (port no.)

Error occurred during the SNMP SET operation !!
Probable Reason : "Port is disabled"
SNMP Error Code : 29

but when I make "sh port (port no.)".the port status in enabled.

2- delimagrp (IMAGrp no.)

Error occurred during the SNMP SET operation !!
Probable Reason : "Failed to delete Port-Controller resource partitions
existing on this port"
  SNMP Error Code : 6

3- dellnsfmimagrp (IMAGrp No.) (list of links)

Error occurred during the SNMP SET operation !!
Probable Reason : "delete links: #of links becoming less than P:n"
 SNMP Error Code : 6

This IMAgrp is simply consisting of one link and i'm trying to delete this
link and delete the IMAGrp so what's wrong with what I did.and
what're the proper steps for deleting the line and the whole IMAgrp.

Thks/BR

Have you configured any connection over this Imagroup ?

If yes, then you need to remove the connection first before deleting the

Re: Foundations Exam [7:52464]

2002-09-01 Thread

Leanardo

The foundation exam should be considered as a convenience for ccnp/d
candidates who already know the subject matter for the routing,
switching and remote access parts of the ccnp/d curriculum.

It is a longer exam that basically covers the subject material for the
three exams. At the end you get three scores. If you pass in ALL THREE
areas then you pass the exam, otherwise you fail the whole exam.

So, if you feel that you are likely to fail in any of the three areas
then it would probably be simpler and cheaper to take the exams
separately.

What exactly do you mean by "non-Cisco VPN"? It's not like Cisco owns the

Re: traffic shapping and rate-limit [7:52468]

2002-09-01 Thread Jon

My understanding is that Rate Limiting will allow you to actually discard
traffic as per your config, traffic shaping may well discard traffic, but it
will be as a natural result of not having enough bandwidth to transmit.

Its really just the different between Policing and Shaping.

Re: CCIE OR CCNP [7:52413]

2002-09-01 Thread Jon

Speaking from experience, I went from CCNA through to CCIE RS in just over a
year. However, I have been working with Cisco's since the IGS and AGS days,
some 10 years ago. Before that I had a 18 months or so with 3com and UB
Networks (anyone remember them ??).

Whilst, having now passed the CCIE lab I feel I could have had a good try at
it without the CCNP/DP exams I prepared for and took last November. I doubt
I would have been as successful though, as there were many things that I
needed to have re-affirmed and many topics I had never come across in my
past experience.

>From my point of view, the NP/DP exams were a good place for me to start my
studies, plus it gave me a few certifications along the way which in the
current job market has got to be worth it.

Whatever you decide, best of luck with your studies and exams.

Re: EIGRP passive-interface [7:52453]

2002-09-01 Thread Jon

It depends, if you are using backup interfaces then EIGRP won't bring the
line up obviously.

I suspect that you are using floating statics though, in which case, if you
just specify passive interface then no adjacency will be formed regardless
of the state of the interface. If you then specify a neighbor so it is
unicast, it will bring the line up (an keep it up) if it is defined as
interesting traffic. If it isn't seen as interesting, it will form an
adjacency when the line is up (by some other interesting traffic) which will
then break when the line goes down again.

Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]

2002-09-01 Thread Chuck's Long Road

I've done this before, and it's not like it's real tough, but.

I am trying to upgrade my IOS images. Neither the Router Software Loader,
not the good old copy tftp: flash: is working.

RSL gives me some odd message

the copy function never asks if I want to erase the current image on the
flash - it just starts to copy, then stops, with a message that there is not
enough rook on the destination device.

sample output of my process:

Router_7#copy tftp flash:
   NOTICE
Flash load helper v1.0
This process will accept the copy options and then terminate
the current system image to use the ROM based image for the copy.
Routing functionality will not be available during that time.
If you are logged in via telnet, this connection will terminate.
Users with console access can see the results of the copy operation.

As you can see - no asking to erase. I suspect this is a problem with the
particular image. I had no problem upgrading a different router with a
different image. Unfortunately, just about all my routers have this
identical image in place.

Anyone seen this? got a fix?

CCO searches have not been regarding. TAC won't talk to me even though I
work for a major partner. Apparently my management made some procedural
changes, and I can't locate anyone internally who can help me out. They
apparently have lives :->

Re: Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]

2002-09-01 Thread Chuck's Long Road

painful process.

I'm more concerned that a technique that I've used successfully many times
on these routers suddenly stops working. This is a "by the book" technique
that I haven't had problems with before, and is supposed to work.

Given that I have better things to do ( going to the config(boot) mode and
working through is pretty time consuming )
The fact that neither RSL or the manual process works correctly tells me
this might have more serious ramifications

So thanks for the suggestions. this one does work. But I think I'll make
Cisco take some responsibility here. Folks will be back to work Tuesday and
I'll get the inform I need to pursue this ticket.

BGP verification(long)(real world)(access available) [7:52500]

2002-09-01 Thread Neal Rauhauser

I'll start this out by saying that I'm frustrated enough with the
final verification of this thing to publish the running configs of all
relevant routers, provide shell access to production boxes, and to set
up an open 48 meg 1750 inside AS 25943 with IBGP sessions to all routers
involved. I *think* its running as intended - I'm having trouble with
verification of my policies - this is my first 'carrier class' network.

BGP layout is like so - I own 25943 and I have admin control of the
20333 routers:

AS701AS20333AS25943AS25943AS25943AS1239
AS7018--^

AS20333 (Exanium) gets service from AT&T(AS7018) and UUNet(AS701) on a
128 meg Cisco box taking full routes. The AS25943/AS1239 connecting
point is also a 128 meg box taking full routes. The internal routers in
AS25943 are all 64 meg 26xx, including the machine at the
AS20333/AS25943 peering point. The diagram is somewhat simplified - I
show one purely internal AS25943 router when there are actually two now
and another two being commissioned within the next thirty days. These
other boxes are actually leaf nodes from the internal AS25943 box
pictured - it sits at the center of a star topology.

Geographically it is somewhat complex also - the AS20333 router and
its AS25943 peer are within 12' of each other, that router and the
central AS25943 router are about three miles apart, and the central
router and the AS25943/AS1239 peering point are about 2.5 miles apart -
so no rearranging of cables for a simpler topology will be allowed as a
solution :-)

One of the IBGP remotes is actually multihomed with a link to the
central router and a link to another undepicted 64 meg 26xx aggregation
box in the same rack as the AS25943/AS1239 peering point.

IP wise the following blocks are involved:

12.36.200.0/23, 12.36.210.0/23, and 12.108.204.0/22 originating from the
AS20333 router. They're anchored with static routes to null0 and the
owner of AS20333 is happy with the behavior as is.

63.170.237.0/24, 63.170.238.0/23, 12.108.206.0/24, and 12.108.207.0/24
are all allocated to AS25943 via Sprint or allocated to AS25943 via
Exanium.

The AS25943 IP allocations are deployed as individual /24s with one
being given to each router insides the AS. The objective here is that if
we lose a microwave link in this network the customers on the Sprint
peered side will go to Sprint while the customers on the Exanium peered
side will go to Exanium. As you can easily see this demands a /24 be
allocated to each router and its associated customers. I've already made
a mess of our first allocation, 12.108.207.0/24, so you may assume this
one is the sacrifice subnet when things go wrong. It has one critical
host in it (DNS) and that machine is in the same rack as its home router
- the AS20333/AS25943 peering point. Its other uses are purely transit
for the other subnets so its 'invisibility' in the event of network
partition shouldn't be an issue.

IGP wise its all OSPF with a proper backbone and at least one OSPF area
allocated to each router that hosts a /24. My long term intent is to
aggregate the /24s at each 'home' router and only show /24s in the
backbone but for the moment 50 or so routes isn't a problem and its
handy to be able to see detailed topology as I move things around in
this growing network.

AT&T has proven to be quite a pain in the ass to work with but I've got
good service out of Sprint and UUNet - both have route filters in place
to accept all the subnets involved from both AS20333 and AS25943, and
engineers from both companies have gone the extra mile and provided me
with the results of various show commands on their side - I believe I
can present all routes to either UUNet or Sprint and have them work as
expected.

 Now the trouble starts:

I wanted to verify that my config was working so I started poking
around on other systems on the net to look at the AS20333/AS25943
cluster from an outside perspective. I have access to routers in AS22325
and from there I couldn't see what I was looking for - namely paths to
all subnets originating in AS20333/AS25943. I went further and used
http://nitrous.digex.net, then went to http://traceroute.org. On
traceroute I found the AT&T internal perspective router - an open system
at 12.0.1.28 - I'm still searching for its equivalent at UUNet and
Sprint so I don't have to keep hassling their engineers.

I would have expected to be able to see both paths but I've had my
nose stuck in Halabi this afternoon and I think I might just be a tad
confused about how BGP works. If this is the case, and my prepended
routes for AS25943 being sent to AS20333 are making it now further than
AS20333's peers at AS701 and AS7018, HOW DOES ONE VERIFY THAT TRANSIT IS
WORKING VIA A NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING METHOD?

I've contacted the peers and the information I get there seems to show
that the config is doing as I expect but I've been wrestling with this
for a while and I can't figure out how to confirm operation without
involving someo

RE: EIGRP passive-interface [7:52453]

2002-09-01 Thread Scott Pleitner

Another option could be to use dialer watch. By making sure the EIGRP
traffic is clearly identified as NOT interesting, the same results will be
achieved.

Since bri's are in use as the backup and frame is the primary, I would
probably lean towards dialer watch so you can use a single bri interface to
potentially provide cover for multiple pvc's.

Do the topics covered in CCDP _really_ help in the R/S lab?

To be more specific... If someone already has CCNP, has passed the written,
and is fairly comfortable with the devices on the lab (and others), then
would it be better to study CCDP specific issues, or is it more 'time
effective' to study BGP, DLSW+, etc.?

I definitely agree that going for CCNP first is 'time effective' for
starting anew, and I'm not 'trolling', but I would like your, and others',
opinion on this issue.

As a start on nondestructive testing, consider the RAtoolset. PRtraceroute,

This is part of the problem - no entries in radb.net except for the
proxy stuff done by Level3 to help 'those crazy Sprint folks'.

I tried to get RAToolset running on fbsd4.0 and failed miserably.
Maybe it'll be more fun with 4.6-stable.

Re: BGP verification(long)(real world)(access available) [7:52508]

2002-09-01 Thread Peter van Oene

Hey Neal. Huge msg so pardon the top post (i do it all the time anyway :)

First off, I skipped over most of the details (do that a lot too) but
gather that you set this thing up, it seems to work, but you are not
entirely sure :)

To begin with, keep in mind that bgp routers only reflect best
paths. Hence, all your prepend stuff will generally not be visible on
distant route servers which should only see the optimal paths. If you are
doing primary/secondary type prepending, you'll only see the primary in
most cases (except those where a looking glass happens to be far enough
away from one side that the primary and secondary end up with equal length
as-paths and the route server posts both).

Anyway, the short answer is that it is tough to see prepended announcements
beyond looking at your rib outs. It is further tougher to see what gets
prepended as cisco has this nasty habit of showing you a pre policy rib-out
(via show ip bgp neigh x/x advertised-routes)

Route server wise, route-server.ip.att.net I'm sure you've found. 701 does
not maintain one and I am pretty sure sprint doesn't either. It would be
really nice if they did :) Lost of ppl have told them this.

Troubleshooting wise, I have been bitten by ATT's policy of matching
distribute-lists in's (routes accepted via whatever cisco means they chose)
with ip access-group ins. In some cases, they'll take the route, but not
the traffic. This can be a major pain to find until you get used to their
doing that (source verification for dos/ddos prevention)

Solution wise, I would tend to be destructive during a maint window to
ensure that both control and forwarding work, and beyond that, ping your
transit providers for shots of their rib-in from you, along with a shot of
your routes as they see them. You likely did this already and are troubled
that you read this much only to find out that you did it all already :)

Re: Staic Routes on 1605 Router [7:52340]

2002-09-01 Thread Craig Robertson

Hi again guys,
Well after checking all the solutions offered, i am still in the same boat.
I am not that new to cisco routers, however, this one is giving me a little
bit of grief.

I cannot ping the ethernet1 interface (10.128.52.1) from a pc directly
connected to it, all on the same subnet. I have tired connecting via a
small hub, both is the uplink on and off, and via a crossover cable.
However, if i change the IP address on this interface to be part of our
internal network, and connect from a cisco switch, the port works fine.
Therefore it must be my config, which is below.

|10.128.52.0|===|10.1.1.0|

Can ping 10.1.1.18 (ethernet0 IP address) from 10.1.1.0 network
Can ping 10.128.52.1 (ethernet1 IP address) from 10.1.1.0 network
Can NOT ping 10.128.52.1 from 10.128.52.0 network
Can NOT ping anything host on 10.128.52.0 network from 10.1.1.0 network

My only conclusion is the way i have 'connected' to network. Ethernet1 is
connected to a 3Com FastEthernet hub via a CAT5 straight through cable. I
have also tried this config using a crossover cable, with the same results.
Can anyone just confirm that if i watned to ping Ethernet1 interface
(10.128.52.1) from the 10.128.52.0 network, both through a hub or directly
to the interface, how would this be done?

Thanks again guys, prob a simple solution that is starring me in the face.
Regards
Craig

Karen Webb's book is good. I would also recommend the Cisco Press "Cisco LAN
Switching" book by Kennedy Clark and Kevin Hamilton ISBN 1-57870-094-9 for
the SWTCH (BCMSN) 640-604 exam.

I have both books and find myself using them frequently when faced with
switching questions and problems. You should always use a couple of
different sources when studying. Also, don't forget the Cisco website. Cisco
pulls many questions for its exams directly from their site that aren't
covered in depth in any of the books.

RE: Routing Exam 640-603 and IS-IS [7:52473]

2002-09-01 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

In my opinion, you should know the basics of IS-IS for the RTING (BSCN)
640-603 exam even though it's not mentioned in the blueprint. For instance,
what is the administrative distance of ISI-IS? (115), does IS-IS support
VLSM? (yes), is IS-IS classless? (yes), etc. I wouldn't expect any major
questions on this protocol, because that is saved for the BSCI 640-901 exam.
Just in case you don't know this already, the BSCI exam covers the same
topics as the RTING (BSCN) exam with the addition of the IS-IS protocol and
counts towards the CCNP, CCDP, and CCIP certifications.

RE: Passing Score for MCAST+QOS [7:52470]

2002-09-01 Thread Larkin, Richard

I found it challenging, but certainly not as difficult as the MPLS exam
which has a much higher pass mark and I have failed twice to date.
For the QoS+Multicast exam, I didn't read the Multicast Cisco Press book,
only the IP QoS book, plus some whitepapers/documentation - and I struggled
- so I would recommend both books.

RE: Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]

2002-09-01 Thread Andrew Larkins

I have had the same porblems here - definately IOS related. All though I
have to manually erase the flash first, it works fine on the routers where
the flash is stored in DRAM - haven't ried it on a 2500.

This is fixed is ver 12.2 IOS.

painful process.
