RE: how to telnet to other FROM PIX? [7:56435]

2002-10-29 Thread Ritchie, Brian
The PIX does not support telnet in the same way that a router or switch
does, you can telnet to the PIX but you cannot telnet from it to other
hosts.

To manage the PIX using a web browser you use HTTPS not HTTP, so the 'url'
would be https://PIX_IP_Address. This will allow you to browse to it
assuming all other configuration tasks have been completed. If you are still
having problems visit
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/iaabu/pix/pix_60/pdm_in/impr
ove.htm#xtocid1 for more help.

Hope this helps, Brian

You do need a WAN hardware in the Sniffer.

LM2000 is one of them, to monitor HDLC/PPP/Frame-Relay.

Hi folks,
I have the following scenario that I would like to seek for advice/help.

1) I have a channelized T1 coming in to the office which
split into
12 channels for internet and 12 channels for voice
2) From the CSU/DSU, I have a DTE/V.35 cable connecting
into my Cisco 3662 for internet.

3) For my other 12 voice channels, I would like to do VOIP
using all Cisco IP phones model 7960 and a Cisco 3640 with one
NM-HDV-1T1-24.
Do I have enough equipment to setup my internal VOIP
network so that internally, I can call my other colleages and
externally, I can use the same ip phone to call the
outside world? Please provide configuration guidelines or advice on
what kind of equipment I'm missing to complete this project.
Thanks for any help.

  now coming to my doubt.

If i have a network say like 192.5.2.0/24 inside the pix
 (connecting to
internet) Does it mean that all the sites with 192.5.2.0/24
 would not be
accessible to the inside network ??

Yes. You can't use someone else's network address in your inside network and
still get to that someone else's network! :-) When your devices try to reach
192.5.2.x, they will do a logical AND with the subnet mask and see that the
result is the same as when they do a logical AND with the subnet mask and
their own address. Hence the destination is local. So they send an ARP
broadcast. They get a response from a local device or no response if the
address doesn't exist locally.

Actually, there are probably workarounds to this. It's not such a silly
requirement. In the past people did tend to make up network numbers that
actually belonged to someone else, so there is a need to get this to work. I
wouldn't be surprised to learn that there's some kludegey way of getting
this to work. It would probably only work for specific outside addresses and
only if you haven't assigned those addresses locally.

More below

  thanks and regards,
  Murali

snip

Can I chip in with a question for everyone now?

If you apply more specific routes to all devices for an address
 which
should appear on your local subnet, will it then try the routed
 path to
 the device.

 eg Machine addressed 100.100.100.100 255.255.255.0
route add 100.100.100.10 mask 255.255.255.255 [default gateway]

This is a host-specific route. Operating systems should understand this and
behave correctly. Host-specific routes have been around for a long time,
like probably since the birth of IP. They solve various problems.

So I tred it on a Windows 98 PC. I added the route and then pinged the
device specified in the addition.

The PC ARPed for the default gateway and then sent the ping to the default
gateway, even though the device is really local. The default gateway sent
the packet back out the same Ethernet and the local machine replied directly
to my PC. I would have expected a redirct from the router too, but I didn't
see one.

Now, is this behavior specific to the host-specific route? I wonder if I do
something like:

route add 100.100.100.2 255.255.255.0 default gateway

Hmm

Oh, Windows 98 won't let me do that! ;-) It will only let me add a
host-specific route. Makes sense I guess. And then it does behave correctly
when I add a host-speciif route (e.g., it does what the route tells it to
do.)

mapping OSPF tag value into BGP community [7:56450]

2002-10-29 Thread bergenpeak
Is it possible to take tag values carried in OSPF external route
advertisements and automatically map them into the community
attribute of the respective BGP advertisement?

Consider a router running both OSPF and BGP. In the BGP config,
there's a redistribute from OSPF into BGP. Assume that only
OSPF external routes, and hence those with tag values, are being
redistributed into BGP.

Assume that these external routes have different tag values.

Is there a way to automatically get each respective OSPF tag value
into the community value of the respective BGP route advertisement?

So, if an OSPF external route advertisment has a tag value of 42,
when the route is redistributed into BGP, the respective BGP community
value would be 0:42. If the OSPF tag value was 81, the BGP community
value would be 0:81.

It looks like it might be IOS possible to statically encode all the
possible
OSPF tag values, via a route-map, and then set the BGP community value.
I've not actually done this yet, so not sure if its possible. However,
I'd rather use an automated mechanism for this. That way, as new OSPF
external tag types are used in the network, I don't need to update
route-maps.

Thanks

Questions before tests [7:56452]

2002-10-29 Thread Aaron Ajello
I'm working on my CCNP, just have CIT to go and when I have taken the first
three, I just kindof flew through the questions before the test where Cisco
asks about your experience level, whether or not you can configure things on
your own or need help with a coworker, etc.

Is it true that your answers will determine how the test is graded or what
types of questions you will get on the actual test? I thought it was merely
a survey so Cisco could get an idea of what types of backgrounds people had
who were taking their tests. But recently I read where someone says those
questions will actually determine how Cisco tests you and which questions
from the pool you will receive.

This seems ridiculous to me, but I have to ask.

thanks,
Aaron

Since a reload solved the problem it's hard to troubleshoot now and
this is probably not the problem but last week I got a call from a
customer whose core was down and they were seeing the same message on
their 6500. What I did was connected to the MSFC that was configured
with the duplicate address and changed it to an address in the same
subnet that we knew was not in use. I then tried connecting to the
duplicate address that was in the error log and sure enough another
router had the same address.

It seems to me that your problem is most likely network layer, so you will

Hmm...I just noticed something about what Paul is asking. He said he
has a _frame relay switch_ that he wants to use ISDN as a backup. Paul,
are you asking how to tunnel frame relay over ISDN? I believe this can
be done but I don't recall the configuration. I remember at one time I
had a configuration that allowed a frame PVC to be tunneled over an
async port to allow one more port on my frame switch, but unfortunately
I don't recall the details.

I believe there is also a Cisco IOS feature that has something to do
with frame relay over ISDN but I've never researched it.

Is this what you're trying to accomplish?

I've heard this same thing too. However, I really don't put much weight in
it. Here's why. Let's say you answer all the questions in a way that makes
you seem like a beginner. It would make sense that you would probably get
easier questions. Why would Cisco want a CCNA, CCNP or CCIE out there that
could only answer the easiest questions? They want their certifications to
mean something so more people will obtain them so more people will be
familiar with their products so more people will BUY their products. Doing
what you've described would seem to undermine their entire purpose; to sell
more product. Anyway, it's my very humble opinion that the people who
believe that also believe that the government is monitoring every single
phone call made by every American citizen (or insert your nationality in

Besides, you've passed the first three, so you basically know what to

Thanks for all your input guy's

I think I confused the issue somewhat !! What I meant was that 'the 7200 is
terminating frame relay circuits and not
acting as a switch' !! (Thanks MADMAN), and that if the Frame fails the ISDN
would immediately kick in to provide connectivity

Anways ... I've got enough info from you all to start reading up ...

Is this what you're trying to accomplish?

disagreement on the correct answer. Personally, I have read the wording
before some of the surveys and it actually says that your answers will be
used to help determine scoring on the exam. I don't believe it determines
what questions you get, only the scoring. Whether it's done on all the exams

RE: Questions before tests [7:56452]

2002-10-29 Thread Moffett, Ryan
The way I interpret this is that the answers you provide will be evaluated
against your score and performance for future development of tests,
including future scoring mechanisms on exams that are authored. I don't
think it is real-time modification of question pools or scoring criteria.
I believe they are attempting to gather statistics to make sure the tests
are updated properly as time goes on. For example, if someone has 1 year of
experience, but can pass all of the CCNP tests, great, good for him. But if
a high percentage of candidates with 1 year of experience can pass the CCPN
tests, then they must evaluate why the tests are so easy to pass. It would
make sense that they would want these kinds of statistics. This is purely
my speculation as to the reasoning behind the pre-exam questions..

Off Topic - Writing as a team sport [7:56470]

2002-10-29 Thread The Long and Winding Road
Some folks believe that writing is a solitary profession. The writer sits in
his/her little office, banging out the thoughts, coming up with the
manuscript, and sending it off to the publisher, who does everything else,
including sending royalty checks in huge amounts.

I recently discovered that writing can also be a team sport.

As some of you know, I've been working on a study guide for one of those
study materials sites. I started out as the lone writer, following the
script. Soon it became apparent that I could use some guidance. I was
extremely fortunate to pair up with Leigh Anne Chisholm, whom many of you
know from this list, and from her published books and other study materials.
I had previously worked with her, doing technical review for a study guide
she was writing for Sybex.

I want to say that as far as I'm concerned, this was manna from heaven.
Leigh Anne is a wonderful partner. She is not only a talented writer, but
provided excellent editorial advice. The result is, in my own opinion, an
excellent paper, well organized, and I believe generally free of the kinds
of errors that plague a number of the study guides out there.

Teamwork? Oh yes. It is my paper, and my guide, and my words, but it is a
far better piece of work because of Leigh Anne's participation in the
process.

If anyone out there is looking for a good author, or a good technical
reviewer, or a good advisor, I believe you can't go wrong with Leigh Anne
Chisholm.

Thanks, Leigh Anne. Very much.

No, your answers to the survey don't determine how the test is graded or the
types of questions you will get on the test. And aliens didn't land at
Roswell either. :-)

You should ask Cisco for the definitive answer, but I think numerous people
have before and we've discussed this on the list before, and that was the
answer. You could check the archives.

They ask you questions about your experience to help them validate the
questions. If a high percentage of newbies get a question wrong, but the
experienced people get it right, then it's a good question. And vice versa,
if the newbies get a question right but the experienced people don't, it
might be a bogus question, something like at what OSI layer does ARP run? ;-)

I've written tests in the past and that's how the data was used and I doubt
it has changed.

Priscilla

 Hi,

I don't have any WAN hardware for sniffer.
Can anyone guide me on how to make the best use of it for
 monitoring
 WAN traffic ?

I'm assuming you have decided not to go the more obvious route of purchasing
a WAN module for your analyzer, probably because those modules are so
expensive.

Most analyzers support advanced filtering. If you have an idea of which
traffic passes across the WAN versus which traffic stays local, you can set
up a filter to just look at that traffic. You can even monitor utilization
if you do a little arithemetic to take into account that the analyzer will
probably base the utilization on the Ethernet bandwidth rather than your
actual WAN bandwidth. (Using MRTG and router show commands might be better
for this.)

If you're concerned that packets are getting dropped on the WAN side, you
can study the traffic behavior on the Ethernet sides. Do you see a lot of
retransmissions? If your analyzer is placed in the topology in the right
position, then you can probably assume that retransmissions are occuring
because packets are getting dropped on the WAN link. You can look at the
other side of the link too if this is your own network and see if packets
are indeed not arriving on the other side.

You can also study delay and response time by simply using the Ethernet
analyzer. On the other hand, if you want stats on CRC errors on the WAN
link, you need a WAN analyzer (or use router show commands). If you want to
see Layer 2 WAN packets like LMI or Q.921 or Q.931, you'll need the
appropriate WAN module. Likewise, if you want to see WAN headers such as
Frame Relay, PPP, etc., you'll need a WAN analyzer.

I think it boils down to Howard's question, what problem are you trying to
solve?

For more specific advice, you may want to read the final chapter in my new
book. The chapter is called WAN Troublehsooting for LAN Engineers. You have
to buy the whole book to get the chapter though. Sorry about that. ;-)
Wouldn't it be nice if books were more modular. Anyway, the book is called

This doesn't explain why it says at the beginning of the survey (not sure if
this is true for all exams), Your answers to this survey will help in the

this on some of my exams (not betas) when I've taken the time to read the
entire survey. Maybe they're talking about future exams. Who the hell knows

No, your answers to the survey don't determine how the test is graded or the

You should ask Cisco for the definitive answer, but I think numerous people

answer. You could check the archives.

They ask you questions about your experience to help them validate the
questions. If a high percentage of newbies get a question wrong, but the

if the newbies get a question right but the experienced people don't, it
might be a bogus question, something like at what OSI layer does ARP run?

I've written tests in the past and that's how the data was used and I doubt

I thought it was merely a survey so Cisco could get an
idea of what types of backgrounds people had who were taking
their tests. But recently I read where someone says those
questions will actually determine how Cisco tests you and which
questions from the pool you will receive.

This seems ridiculous to me, but I have to ask.

CL: I answer the survey truthfully every time I take the test. In the last
several months I have taken 6 certification tests - CIPT 5 times and DQoS
once.

CL: CIPT was a MR FR evey time, and I finally passed by one point.
DQoS took one attempt and I passed with my usual aplomb.

CL: all of which leads me to believe that the survey is probably only used
as a means of doing statistical analyses on the questions themselves, and
not as a means of grading tests. There is no advantage to grading the tests
in anything but an objective manner. There is lots of advantage to analyzing
the questions to help determine if the questions are too easy or too hard.

PIX 515 with Multiple ISPs [7:56489]

2002-10-29 Thread Roy Allen
Hi,
I'm trying to setup two VPN tunnels to the same destination peer from 2
outside interfaces on the PIX. Both the outside interfaces have IP addreses
from 2 ISPs. These interfaces terminate on a switch which forwards the
packets to a router with 2 ip addresses on the eth port from the 2 ISPs. I'm
using a route map on the router to route the traffic based on the source
adderess.

When I do a ping outside www.yahoo.com, it goes out through the 1st ISP
and when I do a ping outside1 www.yahoo.com it takes the 2nd ISP.

At any point in time, only 1 tunnel gets active depending on my routing
statement. I have access lists created which binds to the crypto maps
applied on these two interfaces. Even after creating a second route with a
higher metric, the packets are tyring to take the default path. If I change
the default path then the second tunnel gets initiated but the 1st one goes
down.

Is there anyway for me to get around this?
Thanks
Allen

No, your answers to the survey don't determine how the test is graded or
the
types of questions you will get on the test. And aliens didn't land at

 Hello!

One question - is it possible to run MPLS (edge or LSR) on 26xx?
 Any experience? Right IOS?

Sure, it's just flaky. And not surprisingly MPLS is not officially
supported by Cisco on 26xx's, so if you are running a production MPLS
network on such gear and you experience problems, you're f*cked.

Some folks believe that writing is a solitary profession. The
   writer
sits in
his/her little office, banging out the thoughts, coming up
   with the
manuscript, and sending it off to the publisher, who does
   everything
else,
including sending royalty checks in huge amounts.

I recently discovered that writing can also be a team sport.

As some of you know, I've been working on a study guide for
   one of
those
study materials sites. I started out as the lone writer,
   following the
script. Soon it became apparent that I could use some
   guidance. I was
extremely fortunate to pair up with Leigh Anne Chisholm, whom
   many of
you
know from this list, and from her published books and other
   study
materials.
I had previously worked with her, doing technical review for
   a study
guide
she was writing for Sybex.

I want to say that as far as I'm concerned, this was manna
   from
heaven.
Leigh Anne is a wonderful partner. She is not only a talented
   writer,
but
provided excellent editorial advice. The result is, in my own
   opinion,
an
excellent paper, well organized, and I believe generally free
   of the
kinds
of errors that plague a number of the study guides out there.

Teamwork? Oh yes. It is my paper, and my guide, and my words,
   but it is
a
far better piece of work because of Leigh Anne's
   participation in the
process.

If anyone out there is looking for a good author, or a good
   technical
reviewer, or a good advisor, I believe you can't go wrong
   with Leigh
Anne
Chisholm.

Thanks, Leigh Anne. Very much.

CL: well, area 0 range is an illegal command. you may
 be
   able
 to enter it,
but it does nothing. the area range command is design to
 summarize non
backbone routes into the backbone. if you think aout it,

 is probably
not a real good reaso for backbone routes to be

JMcL: Since when??
I use the area 0 range blah blah command (without the

that was supposed to be part of the command above), and it
   certainly
   doesn't

All right, Miss Smarty Pants. I don't know what IOS versions

R1 and R2 are connected by 160.160.255.0/24, yes?
160.160.255.0/24 is in area 0, yes?
So R2 is also in area 0, yes?
So why are you expecting that the backbone routes will have
 been
summarised? You haven't left the backbone yet - you haven't
 crossed an
 area
boundary (referring to the quote below).
What happens if you connect R1 and R2 by a non-backbone link?

It also remain true even if on R1 I use a more generic
 network
   100.100.0.0
   0.0.255.255 area 0 command.

   So

I stand by my statement that even though you may be able to
   enter the
commands, the fact is that you cannot summarize area 0
 routes
   on a cisco
router, at least not that I've been able to

Using the DOC CD?? [7:56497]

2002-10-29 Thread Cisco Nuts
Hello,

I keep hearing and reading that you should know how to navigate this cd as
it is your friend in the Lab but all I can do is get to the command and
configuration guide and lookup specific features/cmds?

Is there a better way? Can someone point out with an example?

For eg. on CCO I can type www.cisco.com/public/technotes/tech_protocol.shtml
and get to the Technical Tips section.

Is there a way to get this info. on the Doc CD?

Thanks for your help.

RE: Using the DOC CD?? [7:56497]

2002-10-29 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer
Tech Tips are provided by the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) at Cisco, in
other words, the tech support engineer types. They address issues that the
TAC engineers have come across when working with many customers.

The Doc CD is provided by the Documentation department at Cisco, in other
words, the tech writer types. The Documenation department writes the
Configuration Guides and Command References and related material. Their
documents tend to me more formal and comprehensive, covering every little
command and command parameter, whether a customer will ever use it or not.

I don't think TAC material is on the CD, is it?? Remember the CD comes from
the Documenation department.

As far as navigating the CD, you have to know where topcs are in the Config
Guides and Command References. Some topics might be obvious, but a lot
aren't. For example, where might you find info on SNMP configuration? How
about using extended ping? Or configuing tunnels? Or loopback interfaces?
Policy-based routing? Traffic shaping? Frame Relay traffic shaping? How
about the Web Cache Communication Protocol? Could you go right to each of
those topics quickly?

You have to learn where topics are. You won't want to depend on a search
engine which will find way too much, some of which won't be for the IOS that
you're suing. You also won't want to depend on logic since the
categorization of topics isn't based on logic in some cases. ;-)

I think it will just take practice. I don't know of any shortcuts. Does
anyone else?

Is there a better way? Can someone point out with an example?

For eg. on CCO I can type
 www.cisco.com/public/technotes/tech_protocol.shtml
and get to the Technical Tips section.

Is there a way to get this info. on the Doc CD?

 Thanks for your help.

Re: PIX failover problem [7:56199]

2002-10-29 Thread Nadeem-ur-Rehman
Hi Vamsi,

If you are using a cross over cable for state ful failover, make sure the
interface speeds and duplex are matched on both PIXs. Do not leave them to
autonegotiate. Such conditions usually occur, when the secondary unit is
unable to detect the primary unit and therefore assumes itself to be active.
You can check it by show failover command. Make sure that both PIX can see
each other.

Nadeem.

I think you've got your config correct, when any of the interfaces go
 down
on the active PIX it will switch into standby. So when you reboot the
standby it will cause this to happen, the documentation does say you
  should
use a separate switch for the failover NICs which should prevent this,
   http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/110/failover.html . Do you use a
failover cable as well, I would have thought the primary would prevent
 the
failover but I'm not 100 percent sure.

two requirements in order to connect to the PIX via GUI.

  e. The PIX Firewall clock is set to UTC. To determine if the PIX Firewall

singpix01(config)# sh clock

May I know how to set clock to UTC, I found that I can't set the timezone.
Why we need to set the clock to UTC in order to connect PIX via GUI?

The PIX does not support telnet in the same way that a router or switch
does, you can telnet to the PIX but you cannot telnet from it to other
hosts.

To manage the PIX using a web browser you use HTTPS not HTTP, so the 'url'
would be https://PIX_IP_Address. This will allow you to browse to it
assuming all other configuration tasks have been completed. If you are
still
having problems visit
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/iaabu/pix/pix_60/pdm_in/impr
ove.htm#xtocid1 for more help.

Hope this helps, Brian

RE: how to telnet to other FROM PIX? [7:56435]

2002-10-29 Thread Mark W. Odette II
Kenny,

...Never had working on a PIX that didn't have any Encryption installed,
I wouldn't know if it is absolutely true that you have to have it just
to use the GUI, but if the requirements are such, then you need to go
onto Cisco's website and apply for the free DES license key.

After that, if you want to connect to a remote PIX using the GUI, you
will need to follow the cook-book solution Cisco has posted on CCO for
establishing a VPN tunnel between the two PIXen in question, and then
you can use the GUI to remotely manage the other PIX. Your best bet is
to just forget about the GUI for now, and set up SSH on each PIX, and
connect using that. Learn the CLI well, and then use the GUI for all it
really is good for- Monitoring functions.

My biggest pet peeve is that the GUI does not support ALIAS commands in
your PIX config... as well as a few other items like the such that are
more advanced.

For the time setting, just set the clock using the following syntax:

Usage:  clock set  {  |  }

clock summer-time recurring [
   ] []

clock summer-time  date {  |  }
 {  |  }
[]

no clock summer-time

clock timezone []

no clock timezone

show clock [detail]

Hope that helps.

Michael,

if it is only for lab/learning purpose you can use the 12.0S
images from ftp-eng.cisco.com. They are not supported by cisco,
but work quite well. Use anonymous login and look under /isp

Note: The cisco2500 image does not have too much MPLS features
built in. No problems with the 2600 images here.
