Hi All I have the following configuration for setting up the lab. (c3660)[NM2CE1B]--->csu/dsucsu/dsu-->[NM2CE1B]{c3660) To my understanding NM2CE1B requires external csu/dsu. If anyone have the information on this, could u please share your ideas with me regarding type of csu/dsu does it require external or internal is available and about the csu/dsu product. RE: Procurve vs. Catalyst [7:58225]
Another point, in a big network how does HP match Backbonefast Uplinkfast PVLANning In a big network, these things are VERY important, and I think they are cisco proprietary ? Can someone please comment, on STP tweaks that can be done with HP (any stp ieee compliant switch) to equal what cisco does with the first two on my list.. Also, for security I think PVLAN's are the coolest thing I have seen in a while. RE: Procurve vs. Catalyst [7:58225]
I faced this situation (more or less) short time ago, I had to decided whether using HP 5300XL or not, they are Layer 3 and cheaper than a Cisco 4000, but finally I decided not buy them because, afaik, they don't implement VRRP or HSRP. Other reason: I think you can't use CSWI, because you need to have cdp enabled. In this list there are people who knows a lot more than me about hp switches (I think I talked with Larry Letterman 6 months ago about them) perhaps they could help you Edward Sohn wrote: > > i'm looking for ways to convince my customer to > migrate to an all-cisco environment, which would > entail swapping out all the procurve switches > installed on the LAN edge. RE: Is there any switch capable of assigning IP addres [7:58230]
Hi. I'd simply use secured switchports fixed to one MAC address and a DHCP server which gives out IP addresses based on MAC address. You could also use static ARP entries (this would need to be done to all the machines on the network though). But I can not really see a scalable Solution. 100 stations? Error prone and a maintenance nightmare. Perhaps someone has a more elegant solution? This actually creates no loop. The issue you have here is that all traffic forwarded on VLAN 7 on SW A gets forwarded to VLAN 8 and vice versa. So you see the MAC addresses on VLAN 8 also on VLAN 7 which could probably confuse the switch. It did never occur to me that someone might be doing that, so I can not tell if this really causes problems. But it's definately no STP loop (especially with PVST etc.). RE: Home lab setup FRAME SWITCH [7:58204]
Elijah, I use a 2521 as a frame switch in my home lab and that is enough for me. Keep in mind that it only has four serial interfaces, so if you want to do more frame connections, you will need the 2522 or 2523 which have ten serial interfaces. You have more routers in your lab than I do. I only have six routers (not including the 2521). So, the 2521 works well for the number of routers I have. RE: OSPF Question... [7:58200]
Yes; however, the default route will be sent to all routers in the OSPF domain. I was wondering if a route-map or something similar might be used to ensure only one router can get the default route info and no others in the ospf domain will get it... Thanks. Re: Little Help Please blocking pop ups and ads wi [7:58155]
How about redirecting: Fake out the name resolution (i.e. doubleclick.com) from the redirector on a particular web page. Use your internal DNS (or host file) browser to resolve the advertising site name to an internal web server (your own) and then have your internal web server respond with a tiny .gif image which displays as a blank space on your web browser. This controls what is displayed on your browser and drastically reduces the amount of data being downloaded from your ISP connection because you are only delivering a small .gif Just an idea... //art - Original Message - From: "Brad Ellis" To: Sent: Tuesday, November 26, 2002 9:04 PM Subject: Re: Little Help Please blocking pop ups and ads wi [7:58155] > If you stop going to those porn websites, you wont have that problem! :) > > How many computers do you have at home? Home lab setup FRAME SWITCH [7:58204]
Here is my lab setup there is one thing I think I am in desperate need of and that is a frame switch I do not need the 3550 we are deploying them at work and have access to them and also 5500's with the lightstream equipment. After getting this lab together of course I have spent some bucks as you can see below, but for the LABS like from NLI and some of the others will a 2521 serve as a frame switch to do these labs or do a I really need to fork over the bucks for a 2522, you just don't see ags+ on ebay much anymore. I would like to just buy a 2521 if it is sufficient and spend the rest of my allotted funds on purchasing the labs. Or is there someone out there wanting to sell a ags+ or some other router as a frame switch. 3 2501 1 2503 isdn 1 2611 1 2621 1 2509 1 1605 with wic 1T 1 804 isdn 1900 enterprise 2924 enterprise Just got this one yesterday Pix501 Suse8.1 LinuxPC Redhat8.0PC Elijah http://www.digitalrage.org Your one stop for Technical News and HowTo's Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=58204&t=58204 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

EIGRP and Secondary IP Address - Strange Behavior! [7:58210]
Everyone, I have added a secondary IP address to the fastethernet port on my 7206 router to make it easier to convert to a new IP scheme. I put my PC and new, non-production device on the new scheme for testing. I can see everything when i browse network neighborhood (win2k pc, win2k domain, i already checked wins, dns, etc.) except my own pc and the other pc on the new scheme. i can ping myself, the new default gateway and everything else on the lan just fine. the problem is, no other systems can see OR ping my system. to make things even more confusing, other systems CAN ping the new dafault gateway (10.75.3.1), but NOT my pc (10.75.3.100). what am i doing wrong? eigrp is our routing protocol. do i need to add any routes or anything to get this to work right? thanks, kris. Again, it's entirely up to you or the proprietary code behind that GUI. As far as I know, the issue isn't addressed in any standard. In most cases, it's safe to assume the GUI will choose least number of intermediate hops. In your example, given that the number of hops would be the same via either direction, there is likely some arbitrary toss of the coin. All clockwise or all counterclockwise...something along those lines. What's important to remember is that there is no one-size-fits-all anwser in a production network. To illustrate, say you could sell your protection bandwidth to a customer with low-priority needs. Say that the customer has facilities geographically in the neighborhood of nodes A & B. In that case, you'd put your working A - C traffic via the A, D, C route. In the case of a fiber break between A & D or D & C, traffic would wrap back around the ring and kick off the low-priority A - B traffic that was "re-sold." See what I mean? There isn't a firm answer to your question. Re: Cisco CSS load setting [7:58171]
I've seen similiar things happen here. The problem was interface errors on switchports. Check the port where the CSS is plugged into switch and where "high load" webserver is plugged for interface errors. Re: Cisco CSS load setting [7:58171]
Perhaps try disabling and reactivating the service. That might help reset the load calculations. As I recall, a load of 255 means that it's unreachable but I don't know that for certain. When you see this, have you tried verifying that the logical web server associated with that service is actually accepting requests? A subtle point here. Type 3 summaries, when sent inter area, are not flooded, but regenerated. The ABR generates them by looking at routes in the routing table. Hence, if the ABR put routes in the table from non backbone type 3's, those routes would be prone to readvertisement into the baackbone. > > In fact, if the ABR did install routes based on the non-0 summary > LSA information, better paths to destinations might be possible. Can you give an example of this? If all ABRs send accurate summaries to the backbone, from the backbones perspective, routing should be optimal. The only time it becomes less is is when the ABR coalesces information The > result with an ABR using non-zero summary information in its > routing table is that some intra area0 traffic might unexpectedly > transit a non-zero area. Forwarding decisions in OSPF are either source to destination, source to ABR, ABR to ABR, or ABR to destination. In all of these cases, the source and final or intermediary source shared an identical LSDB from which they will calculate similar SPF trees. Hence, there shouldn't be a case in a stable network where two nodes in the same area find a different best path through the area. In the Area 0 case, assuming the traffic is destined to a non-0 area, the ABRs simply forward that traffic to the nearest ABR, upon which all ABRs should agree with the exception of multi-abr areas whos ABRs will not be able to forward back toward the backbone due to route preference. This might be more confusing than your paragraph though ;-) > A virtual link is the mechanism to "formalize" the use > of a non-0 area for transit. These LSAs allow the backbone area databases to remain identical for all routers in the area which is a necessity for link state protocols. Breaking this will more than likely lead to routing instability. Certainly in some basic topologies, you might be able to relax some rules and still provide stable routing, but the question is, what are you gaining with this topology? > Consider two ABRs: area0ABR1area1ABR2area0 > > If the paritioning of area 0 gives ya the willies, assume > they're connected together. In your simple topology, this might work ok. However, your topology is simple. I've never really thought about the behavior you describe, mostly because I can't see where it makes sense, but I could imagine lots of control loops, particularly in areas with multi-abrs. When networks transition, you'd likely run into counting to infinity issues which OSPF doesn't really have a mechanism to deal with (ie hop co
RE: Preparing for Support exam [7:58156]
I just passed support the other day and used Exam Cram, Cisco Press and Boson. The Exam Cram is good, Cisco Press is good, but just for reference. I had heard this was the toughest of the CCNP test, but to me it was the easiest. If you take this test last, the preparation for the others will end up helping you a lot. Know your debug and show commands for not just IP, but IPX and Appletalk as well. Also, go through the exam topics listed on the cisco site. It seems like a cliche, but I successfully used that to focus my studying. Re: 2 IDS modules in a 6509 [7:58126]
Yes, you can use as many IDS modules as you have free slots for (minus the sups of course). Each IDS is managed independently, one does not affect the other. You would, of course, use different VACL's to point different traffic to each IDS blade, so each IDS "sees" different traffic. RE: Little Help Please blocking pop ups and ads [7:58182]
Elijah, Not real easy to do with a PIX. You could setup ACLs to block access to all the big marketing companies like doubleclick.net, etc. But that would be a never-ending battle. An alternative is running Mozilla as your browser. It's got an option to turn off unrequested windows. I'm not sure, the newer Netscapes might do it now as well. It works fine. http://www.mozilla.org Chuck Church CCIE #8776, MCNE, MCSE Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=58182&t=58182 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: OSPF ABR question [7:57990]
Thanks. Went back and read through some of the relevant parts of the RFC. I believe there is no routing loop issue if an ABR was to consider summary LSAs received from non-zero areas. (where "consider" means install routes from these type 3s. "consider", above, does not mean propogate the summary info into area 0). I believe this would maintain the DV properties of the OSPF two-level hierarchy because the ABR would not re-originate the information that was already re-orignated at another ABR. In fact, if the ABR did install routes based on the non-0 summary LSA information, better paths to destinations might be possible. However, since the ABR doesn't advertise these better paths (remember, no taking non-0 summary info and sending into area0) these better paths are not visible to the backbone area. The result with an ABR using non-zero summary information in its routing table is that some intra area0 traffic might unexpectedly transit a non-zero area. "Unexpectedly" here means that the area0 SPF would compute a path to the destination, and from the SPF perspective, traffic would remain on area0. But when the traffic hit the ABR, it might forward the packets over the non-0 area as that's a better path towards the destination. A virtual link is the mechanism to "formalize" the use of a non-0 area for transit. The benefit of the VL mechanism over the thinking above is that a VL allows routers in area0 to be cognizant of the non-0 area as another way to reach destinations in area0 and thus include these costs into it's LSDB and SPF calcs. Compare an ABR including summary LSA information in it's routing table (what I've been asking about) and an ABR at the end if a VL. How is the routing information received at this ABR different? Consider two ABRs: area0ABR1area1ABR2area0 If the paritioning of area 0 gives ya the willies, assume they're connected together. It really doesn't matter. Consider ABR2. It will see type 1-5 LSAs from it's area 0. If ABR1 and ABR2 had a VL between them, ABR2 would pass all of these LSAs, intact, to ABR1 over the VL. ABR1 would be able to use area1 to send traffic to ABR2's area0. Assume there is no VL between ABR1 and ABR2. Instead, ABR1 learns about ABR2's area 0 via type 3-5 LSAs from ABR2. Well, type 3 LSAs are really the info found in type 1-2 LSAs but with just the RID information reflecting ABR2 instead of the originating router's RID. So, I (still) don't see an issue if the ABR behaved as described above. Thanks for the thoughts so far. Be interested in more feedback on the above analysis. Re: Spanning tree loop [7:58099]
Thanks for everyone the response. This scenario was seen in production network. Switch A is managed by us, Switch B is managed by client. We don't have visibility of switch B and the client has very little knownlodge of their own gears. Switch B is HP 2524, according to cdp discovery. Switch A is running ISL trunking connected with an external router. When I did "show cdp neig", i could see switch A list itself as its own neighbors on those two ports. Thus I guessed HP2524 must configured the same vlan for those two adjacent ports. Switch A spt would be PVST, switch B is MST. They should be able to communicate via access link, according to the theory, and that was what i saw. Saw messages like this: (fe0/7 is on vlan 7, fe0/8 is on vlan 8) %RTD-1-ADDR_FLAP: FastEthernet0/7 relearning 1087 addrs per min %RTD-1-ADDR_FLAP: FastEthernet0/7 relearning 1065 addrs per min %RTD-1-ADDR_FLAP: FastEthernet0/8 relearning 5 addrs per min %RTD-1-ADDR_FLAP: FastEthernet0/8 relearning 9 addrs per min Now from your lab result and what I saw, * if SW A and SW B are both running PVST, two switch won't communicate * if SW A and SW B are running different spanning tree types, two switches can communicate but the function of spanning tree doesn't work well. Re: CCIP MCast and Qos Exam......How tough?? [7:58161]
As tough as u can imagine. I hardly passed it though the passing grade wasn't that high. The problem with this exam is that none of the sources available makes u quite confident that u really understand all the topics - Specially the QoS part - I believe things would be much more different if you have the chance for lots of hands-on experience with it. It's kinda general as u said but passing the exam is one thing and really feel confident that u really know the stuff is another thing. Though passing score for MPLS was very high (867) but through the exam I felt MPLS was much easier than the Qos/MCAST one. Again maybe because I have the chance to really practice MPLS. All what I can say is that u need to study hard for this one and that QoS is one of the topics that really needs a book or two that are well written and covers it from top to bottom without assuming any previous knowledge about the topic before.
