Please state your intentions for configuring it this way. Are you
configuring inter-VLAN routing? EtherChannel?

Does anyone have any good advice on choice of network
management/monitoring software? I am looking to monitor roughly 25
servers 20 routers (mostly VPN to a 3000 Concentrator) 8 or so pix
firewalls and various other switches and network devices. I have tried
the Cisco works ver 6.0 eval and although it is a few thousand pounds
cheaper than cisco works I have not been that impressed with the
interface or functionality. Monitoring is going to be the main function
but it would be nice to have some diagnostics tools and config delivery
also. Considering the WAN is fairly small does anyone have any
suggestions?

Chris

Re: This is even better - RIP / OSPF redistributio [7:66057]

2003-03-25 Thread Orlando Palomar Jr CCIE#11206
I concur with Henry D. Sometimes, the CCIE lab would ask you to do fairly
"stupid" or unconventional things just so they'll know that you master that
particular subject.

In the CCIE practice lab example you provided, the author was probably
trying to test your ability to redistribute between OSPF and RIP (and
probably solve some routing issues especially if it's RIPv1), and your
ability to block the routes efficiently and with the least number of commands.

When I took my lab, I keep muttering to myself "I can do this scenario much
more efficiently than what it's asking me to do". But hey, it's their test
questions and you have to comply to pass it. Can't argue with that fact. ;-)

I need to bone up on the uses of the 3550 vis the CCIE Lab (I take the lab

Also...any good links on configuring 3550 would be GREATLY appreciated.

RE: ebgp vs ebgp multihop [7:66127]

2003-03-25 Thread Orlando Palomar Jr CCIE#11206
One reason I can think of is that ebgp-multihop (in the lab) allows me to
peer to a remote router's loopback interface. This can somewhat overcome
situations wherein the main link can be down, but there still exists another
link in which I can keep the neighborship up for whatever reason. As BGP
runs on top of TCP, peering will still be up as long as there is another
path to the remote router's loopback interface. ie. multi-homed BGP
applications.

I'm sure there are some more advantages and disadvantages of using such
design in the real world. But I would guess that the guys from Cisco (or the
geniuses who designed BGP), put ebgp-multihop in there as a feature not to
be mandatorily used, but to overcome some unavoidable situations.

Content Switch and Secure Content Accelerator management [7:66144]

2003-03-25 Thread Patrick Donlon
Hi All

long time since I've been at groupstudy, I need to do some serious study too
and hopefully I can answer (or try too) some q's. First off I've this
problem with a content switch CSS and ssl accelerator SCA. I want to be able
to manage the SCA using the web interface, this works fine on port 80 but
for added security I want to use https. I've enabled the port on the SCA and
created a certificate too. My ssl server for web management is set up like
this

  1 _webManagement_ Server Type: Normal
I.P. Address: 192.168.1.1
SSL Port: 443
Clear-Text Port: 449
Transparent Mode: off
 Status: Enabled
Private Key: _webManagement_
Certificate: _webManagement_
Security Policy: default
Certificate Chain: N/A

On my CSS I've set up service for port 443 and 449. When I try to view the
page I get the Security Alert for the private cert then nothing happens. If
anyone would like to see the CSS config I can paste that too

Cheers

Pat

When calculating the composite metric, IGRP and EIGRP use the heaviest load
on any segment in the route. The concern is any bottlenecks. You wouldn't
want a router to select a path that on average has a reasonable load, but
also has one link that is overloaded. This could happen if you used an
average. And you definitely wouldn't want it to choose a path with the
highest load. So they use the lowest load of any segment, which they pass
to each other in Update packets.

As you probably know, load isn't used at all unless you configure the metric
weights command.

Reliability is similar. It's the worst reliability of any segment in the
path. You wouldn't want a router to select a path that on average had good
reliability, but also had a link in the middle somewhere that was dropping
packets like crazy. As you probably know, by default reliability is not used
unelss you use the metric weights command.

IGRP and EIGRP also use the lowest-bandwidth segment on the route to a
network. The concern, again, is any bottlenecks. You wouldn't want a router
to select a path that had some high-bandwidth links if there was still a
dial-up modem connection somewhere in the path. Each router reports the
bandwidth (which is configurable at router interfaces) in Update packets.
The lowest is selected and passed on.

Delay, on the other hand, is a sum of all the delays for outgoing interfaces
in the path to the network.

Did you already find this paper on IGRP by Rutgers:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/103/5.html

It doesn't have all the details, but is still a good read.

2003-03-25 Thread Jeffrey Reed
Larry you are correct. From Cisco Product Bulletin 1855:

The EI version supports all that and more. The EI version of software is
embedded in Cisco
Catalyst 2950T-24, 2950C-24, and 2950G-12, 2950G-24, 2950G-48 switches, and
supports advanced intelligent services, gigabit connectivity, and a richer
set of features. These
include Cisco Spanning-Tree Protocol enhancements for high availability,

Ebgp multihop in a NBMA medium?? [7:66149]

2003-03-25 Thread Cisco Nuts
Hello,

If RTA, RTB and RTC are in a FR multipoint config, with RTA in AS100 and RTB
and RTC in AS200 with RTB peering with RTA and RTC, does the next-hop-self
need to be set on RTB for BOTH RTA and RTC, IF BOTH RTA and RTC are
advertising networks??

I definitely understand that if RTC were adverting 10.0.0.0/8, RTB would set
itself as the next-hop-self for RTA to get to 10.0.0.0/8.

Now if RTA also advertises netw. 20.0.0.0/8, would RTB need to be set as the
next-hop-self for RTC to get to 20.0.0.0/8?

Which basically means that RTB needs to be set as the next-hop-self for
both RTA and RTC??

Now to add to this, if you are running an IGP for the networks that connect
these 3 routers, if the next-hop-self even necessary?

Please advise.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
CN

P.S. My Internet connection via Cox is down at this moment (thank you
Cox..as usual) so I cannot get to my routers from work to try this out!!

RE: CCIE Self-Employment [7:62394]

2003-03-25 Thread travis marlow
I recently did some work in Wichita, Kansas. This tech at an Insurance
company went and bought some gear from his buddy that works at a reseller.
When he got the gear he asked his reseller buddy if he knew if anyone could
install it for him. The reseller calls up Ingram Micro, from who he
purchased, and asked them if they had anybody. Their reply was that you
need a CCIE to do that. Reseller guy calls up WSU, which has a CCIE lab,
and speaks to someone there that says they can do it. However, they never
called him back. Reseller guy knows my brother and my brother told him that
I could do it, but I was not a CCIE. Your probably wondering what was this
mysterious work to be done? They had a 2620 with a fe int and a serial
int. They wanted to add a third interface for a dmz, use the IOS firewall
and setup a remote VPN. Of course he didn't have enough flash or memory or
the right IOS. The moral of the story is that I charged him $125 an hour to
get him setup. He was more than happy to pay it because they couldn't find
anybody in the area that could do it. I live in Kansas City, so it's a 3
hour drive down there. I would think that in the larger cities your going
to have that competition that is going to drive rates down. But a place
like Wichita, you can still demand a decent rate$

RE: Log files [7:66070]

2003-03-25 Thread
The router can save logs into a memory buffer which of course gets
cleared if you reboot. You would need to turn on logging and then
you would be able to look at the log.

logging buffered 16000
logging on
logging monitor deb
etc, etc

type logg ? to see other options. Most people will configure logging
x.x.x.x to point to a syslog server where the logs can be stored and
managed.

While I don't know about the ISP environment, I've done several BGP labs
with other folks in different parts of the country. EBGP Multihop is a
necessary part of this, obviously.

I suppose in real world the advantage is that you can peer loopbacks, rather
than just the physical interfaces.

Another thing that comes to mind, applicable to ISP and corporate
environments, is that your iBGP routers can be located in different parts of
your network, eliminating the need for physical adjaceny.

Hi,
Just yesterday I was wondering the same thing. I checked into getting ATM
for my home lab and the cheapest I came up with was $1,500.00
for all needed equipment.

Check Horizondatacom.com - Cisco Lightstream 100 - $495.00
They have 2 available.

Check Ebay - 2 4500M (165.00 each). One seller has six of these
for sale. No modules, however 16/16 with 12.0 IOS. Do the following
search from the Ebay main page - cisco 4500m. This auction will end
in 19 hours from now (time now is 3:30 pm EST)

Check Ebay - 1 seller has a np-1a-sm for an unbelievable $200.00
and another seller has a np-1a-sm for $425.00. Do the following search from
the Ebay main page - cisco np-1a-sm. The first guy's
auction ends 3/13.

It depends on how your finances are. I mulled over whether to buy but
decided to use an online rack rental for ATM. Best of luck.

back to A by reply. However from router F I cannot ping router A.
As the ping works in the first case - ie it knows the path back from F to A
- how come it doesnt work in the 2nd ? The path is 'clean' ie no firewalls,
access lists or any filtering. Puzzled.

Re: Router ID? [7:66108]

2003-03-25 Thread
OSPF uses a router ID in it's advertisements to other neighbors.
The router id is simply the highest IP address of a loopback if you
have them configured and if not then the highest IP of an active
interface. I don't think it's a reachability type question - the
neighbors certainly need to be able to talk to each other and learn
about the topology - but the addresses they use to send traffic can
be different than the IP used in the router id.

2003-03-25 Thread Diego Martínez Boqué
Hello Group.

Is it possible to connect an external modem to a Cisco 1600 series router?

And if it is, then how is it done?

Can I connect using the serial interface?

Any link with step by step instructions?

Thank you all!

ebgp-multihop default value?? [7:66157]

Hello,

Thus, I am assuming that the ebgp-multihop default value = 255??

The ping reply from router F uses the same addresses as the ping from router
F to router A. Why would the reply work but not the ping?

Or maybe the ping from router F to router A fails because the reply from
router A doesn't get back. But that would be weird too. Why would router A
be able to send a ping but not a reply? He needs to find out which fails and
where, with debugs or sniffers.

He could still have a routing problem, but it would have to be a weird one
if these results are consistent.

He says no firewalls or access lists, but it sure sounds like a firewall or
access list to me.

S! ALL!

I am recieving 2 2950's (WS-2950T-24 as I recall) with the EMI for work at
the end of this week. Are they comparable to the 3550 vis MLS capabilities?
I need to bone up on the uses of the 3550 vis the CCIE Lab (I take the lab
on 4/6 ) and I am hoping these 2950's will do the job.

Also...any good links on configuring 3550 would be GREATLY appreciated.

Prayers for me would not be refused either :)

You have a routing problem. Check your routing tables thouroughly. I'm sure
you're missing some networks.

The reason you're able to ping one-way is because you're using different
sets of source and destination IP addresses when pinging from router A to
router F, as compared to pinging from router F to router A.

Use the extended ping command to see what I mean.

RE: ping things [7:66155]

2003-03-25 Thread Daniel Cotts
Several thoughts:
A standard ping uses as its source address the address of the exit
interface.
Extended ping can use the address of any interface on that router.
Do a trace to see where it fails.
Check the routing tables of the various routers.
Somewhere a route is missing.
For example - suppose routers A and F each have a LAN segment and a WAN
interface. A standard ping from either would use its WAN interface address.
Now on one end (say A)the LAN network isn't in the routing table. From A you
can ping F (maybe both LAN and WAN); but F can only ping the WAN interface
of A - not the LAN.
Let us know your results.

HP OVNNM -Remote networks discovery [7:66167]

Hi all

I am trying to setup OVNNM to discover a remote network. Could you
please help me with a clue. I am using OVNNM 6.4 w2k version. I guess I
am supposed to setup the network address and the network mask but I
don't know where.
I would mention that I know the remote gateway for this network. I added
manually
the device but the NNM refuses to manage the object (still blue) and of
course no discovery for the network behind it.
Thank you in advance

trying to remember who it was who put a sniffer on the line and verified
this, but yes the answer is 255 is the default.

don't you just love what the documentation has to say about this?

A cannot reach the interface from which the ping in sourced on F most
likely. Try controlling your source addresses and see if that points you
in the right direction.

Notice if you configure ebgp-multihop with no parameter, that the "show ip
bgp neighbors" output for that neighbor says:

External BGP neighbor may be up to 255 hops away.

If you specify a number, such as 2, you'll see:

External BGP neighbor may be up to 2 hops away.

Not putting a parameter on the command makes life easier, but then again,
BGP network operators don't care about easiness. :-) However, if you are
going to put a parameter, you need to know the number of hops, which can be
a little confusing because just going to a loopback on another router
instead of a directly-connected interface counts as a hop.

I checked with a sniffer by the way. On the 3-way handshakes, the routers
use 255 for the IP TTL regardless, at least on my routers which are running
IOS 11.0. That surprised me. But after the 3-way handshake, they start
setting the TTL to 1 (if no ebgp-multihop), 255 (if ebgp-multihop is
configured with no parameter), and the correct number (if ebgp-multihop is
configured with an exact number).

That seems like a misbehavior to me (i.e. setting the TTL to 255 for the
three-way handshake). You could establish a connection with a router even
though you couldn't do anything. You could establish so many that you could
cause a DOS. I'll have to do some more testing of this.

Priscilla

Any HP OpenView issues would be more appropriate on the OpenView forum at
www.ovforum.org. If you're an NNM user you really should be on that list,
especially if you're running a brand new version of NNM (6.4) on the world's
worst network management platform (anything running Windows) :-) There are
so many potential problems here that you really should seek advice on a
forum dedicated to that topic.

Good luck,
John

IGRP Metric calculation [7:66062]

2003-03-25 Thread Tim Champion
When calculating the metric of an IGRP route (with non-default 'K' values)
which load and reliability values does one use? Do you use the highest,
lowest or average value for the entire route?

Also if anyone could point me to a document on the above it would be
appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

I can ping from router A through various hops to router F.
Therefore the packet'knows' how to reach F - and also how to find a path
back to A by reply. However from router F I cannot ping router A.
As the ping works in the first case - ie it knows the path back from F to A
  - how come it doesnt work in the 2nd ? The path is 'clean' ie no firewalls,
access lists or any filtering. Puzzled.

The IHL is 4 bits long, and thus can have a maximum value of 2^4-1=15.
Which, in turn, means that the IP header could in theory be a maximum of
15 32-bit(=4 byte) units ('words') long, or 60 bytes.

2^16-1.

Think MTU and fragmentation. An *IP packet* can be up to 64KB large, but
that does no mean that the underlying network must be able to transmit
or receive *frames* that long.

See above. The length is a *16-bit value*, not 16 bits itself.

TCP SYNSENT Timeout [7:66178]

2003-03-25 Thread John Neiberger
One of our programmers is asking me about this and I really don't have an
answer. I've checked RFC 793 and haven't spotted the answer yet.

Is there a default time specified in TCP to remain in the SYN SENT state?
If a device sends a SYN and doesn't receive a response, is the timeout a
built-in TCP parameter or is that a function of the application or operating
system?

I'm starting to think that this is specific to the operating system, but we
have a need to make it specific to a certain connection without affecting
all TCP connections. To be specific, they're writing something in Java
1.3.1 (I think) and it doesn't have the capability to tweak TCP parameters.
For a particular set of connections they'd like the timeout to be 10
seconds, but it seems to be defaulting to 45.

They tell me that if we were using Java 1.4 they'd be able to adjust these
parameters, which makes me think this is an application or OS-specific
parameter and is only relevant to a particular TCP implementation and could
vary from platform to platform.

Any thoughts on this?

Many thanks,
John

RE: PIX VPN home access question [7:65666]

2003-03-25 Thread BJ Rice
The 515 is actually at my home and from my office, I VPN to it. Yeah I know
it is quirky, but I do have a legitimate excuse.

You asked what the ip address outside DHCP setroute command does. I have
DSL at home with no static IP address. That line in my PIX essentially lets
the PIX know that I will be receiving my outside IP address via DHCP. The
setroute argument merely transfers the gateway IP address to my inside PCs.
Yes, I am also using DHCP to serve internal IP addresses to my internal PCs.

Your other question about VPN access and Internet. Not sure if I understand
your question, but while I am VPN'd into my PIX from home, yes users at home
(my wife) can access the Internet. Is this what you are asking? YOu should
be able to VPN from your home to your 515 at work and still allow INternet
access for the employees at your work.

OSPF Adjacency Question [7:66206]

2003-03-25 Thread CiscoNewbie
Hi all. my cisco router keeps reporting this error when trying to bring up
an adjacency accross a P2P link.

OSPF: Rcv pkt from xxx.xxx.xxx.13, Serial0/0.1, area 0.0.0.1: src not on the
same network

I am presuming that the issue here is the subnet mask that I have specified
the network statement as under OSPF. My serial interface (frame-relay
subinterface) has a /30 mask. How should my network statement be configured
if the IP address of the interface is xxx.xxx.xxx.14? I have tried the
following:

network xxx.xxx.xxx.0 0.0.0.255 area 1

as well as:

network xxx.xxx.xxx.12 0.0.0.3 area 1

Neither one seemed to work. I still got the same error.

The other side is also on the same subnet and it has an IP address of
xxx.xxx.xxx.13/30 configured as a P2P as well. If the network statement is
not the issue, please advise.

Thanks.

3550s and L3 rate-limit [7:66209]

2003-03-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi. I have a few questions that I need clarification on:

1) Is this the correct method to do L3 rate-limiting on a 3550?

access-list 101 permit ip any xxx.xxx.xxx.0 0.0.0.255
!
class-map match-any 768k_traffic
match access-group 101
!
policy-map 768k-DSL
class 768k_traffic
police 768000 768000 exceed-action drop
!
interface FastEthernet0/3
no switchport
ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.1 255.255.255.252
service-policy output 768k-DSL

2) After playing with the ingress/egress filtering statements, f0/3 accepts
the service-policy command but it does not show up in the config (the
original tests did show up)

interface FastEthernet0/3
no switchport
ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.1 255.255.255.252
no cdp enable

3) Can I not do L3 rate-limiting on the 3550 for both ingress and egress
rate-limiting (if "input" is specified and an "output" command is entered,
it wipes the "input" statement).

On the 2948G-L3s, I would use the rate-limit command and specify both input
and output per interface.

Basic QOS Frame MPLS question [7:66210]

2003-03-25 Thread Paul
Hi, Quick question to everyone

At work I have a Frame Cloud that links all our sites together in a hub and
spoke manner.

At some of the sites I would like to extend our IP Telephony and perhaps
introduce Video Conferencing.

Assume I have adequate bandwidth throughout for video and IP telephony.

I would like to implement QOS. Am I correct in assuming that I can only
prioritise voice/video over the frame circuit, and that if I want to
implement
QOS I would have to 'swap' Frame for MPLS/Layer 4 Switching ???

Kind regards

Paul

RE: 1720 crashing every week [7:66080]

2003-03-25 Thread John Brandis
I had the same model and the same problem in 2001. I was doing prettyt much
the same setup also, however I had PAT in use. For some reason (which was
reoslved with an IOS upgrade), the box would die but luckily I would get a
dump at that time of the memory etc. I got onto the TAC and they had a newer
mid release IOS that solved my problem, however I did look stupid as my
router would die in the middle of the day, right when net usage was at its
highest. Possibly the router/IOS could not handle the PAT to well..

Hope this helps you.

Hi Folks,

I got two 1720's connected with a two bri's. I am running PPP multilink on
them, it is basic ISDN setup with PPP Multilink,Also I have set up a very
high idle-timer on the dialer interface just to keep them up indefinitely,
but the routers crash every week and I have to manually reset them and, then
they work fine for a week.Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

that would work, but I would get at least each providers internal routes
rather than just a default. and unless it's for financial reasons (i.e.
billed per usage) I wouldn't prepend your AS on either link... just let the

RE: Natting problem...help!!! [7:66111]

2003-03-25 Thread Charles D Hammonds
from the below link:

"...The inside device cannot use the IP address of the outside device
because it is the same as the address assigned to itself (the inside
device). Therefore, the inside device will send a DNS query for the outside
device's domain name. The inside device's IP address will be the source of
this query, and that address will be translated to an address from the
"test-loop" pool because the ip nat inside source list command is
configured.

The DNS server replies to the address which came from the pool "test-loop"
with the IP address associated with the outside device's domain name in the
payload of the packet. The destination address of the reply packet is
translated back to the inside device's address, and the address in the
payload of the reply packet is then translated to an address from the pool
"test-dns" because of the ip nat outside source list command. Therefore the
inside device learns that the IP address for the outside device is one of
the addresses from the "test-dns" pool, and it will use this address when
communicating with the outside device. The router running NAT takes care of
the translations at this point..."

Is that accurate??? The "ip nat outside source" command will translate the
IP in the PAYLOAD of the DNS reply packet even though it is not the
source??? doesn't sound right and I am unable to test it rite now...

You could get around this by doing a two way nat, or as cisco calls it,
nating for overlapping networks ..

2003-03-25 Thread Charles D Hammonds
didn't even look at your config the first time 'round, but now that I do...

if you're using distribute-lists, why match ip addr again in route-map 6128?
remove the match clause and just set as-path prepend (if you must) since you
only have the one route. then you can get rid of access-list 30

2003-03-25 Thread Dave
Check my earlier response, I use both the 2950T-24 and a couple of
3550-24-EMI's in my home lab and they are different. the 2950 does not do
layer 3 nor does it have the qos granularity and queuing depth the 3550
does, but the look and feel is very similar.

NAT IP in DNS reply payload? [7:66224]

2003-03-25 Thread Charles Hammonds
from "Natting problem" thread...

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk361/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080093f30.shtml

"...The inside device cannot use the IP address of the outside device

device's domain name. The inside device's IP address will be the source of
this query, and that address will be translated to an address from the

The DNS server replies to the address which came from the pool "test-loop"

translated back to the inside device's address, and the address in the

communicating with the outside device. The router running NAT takes care of
the translations at this point..."

Is that accurate??? The "ip nat outside source" command will translate the
IP in the PAYLOAD of the DNS reply packet even though it is not the
source??? doesn't sound right and I am unable to test it rite now...

Re: 2950 with EMI any good for studying? [7:66106]

2003-03-25 Thread Larry Letterman
the 3550 in the lab has the ability to support routing as well as switching.
That means the lab test may ask you to configure any routing/qos/switching
configs on the 3550...the 2950 does not support the routing side of it...

OK..now you guys are confusing me because I have ordered the 2950T-24 with
EMI...and your blurb here SEEMS to state that it supports what I THINK I
will need...am I missing something? Not that I can afford a 3550 with the
EMI, I just wanted to know if there is anything really different between
the
2950T with EMI and the 3550 as included in the lab.

  ..I feel so doomed :)

I appreciate all the replies and especially the links!
