Routing Protocols Load balancing vs. other solutions

How effective is the load balance features of routing protocols (for
example, OSPF equal paths load balancing) when
compared to solutions such as F5 or Windows NT load balancing ?

OSPF Load Balance/Metric

2000-11-13 Thread Billy Monroe

Hello:

An interviewer asked me what happens if you have two paths to a Router, both
using OC-3, and routing protocols is OSPF.

I said that OSPF is a link state protocol and its metric is "Cost", which is
10^8/Bandwidth. Load balance is enabled by default on OSPF, so packets will
be load balanced "per destination" (it should be configured if 'per packet'
is required).

The guy then told me that I should take "Congestion" into consideration.

How can this be ? I know that EIGRP or IGRP may be configured to use Load as
a metric, thus congestion would be take into account. I couldn't find any
documentation showing that OSPF takes congestion as a metric.

Please let me know if I am wrong.

Thanks,

What technologies do you typically deal with when working for NOCs at big
telcos (entry-level) ?

Do you see any switching ?

Which virtual lab for BCMSN ?

Please tell me if routersim or CIM are good choices.
It seems CIM is very nice but the problem is that it is not updated to the
BCMSN - it seems more like the old switching course ?

Well the past couple weeks have been fun but
reading through over 100 emails a day is too much.  I thought this list
might have helped me along but mostly it just wasted valuable time.
There is never a shortage of stupid questions and people that don't know how
to read the archives to get 80% of the questions answered.  If I have to
read one more question asking what book to read for the CCNA or some other
  test I'm gonna be sick.

In the span of 6 days I read all the books and
passed the pathetic CCNP.  What a joke that test was.  For those of
you that asked me about the Foundation test it was terribly easy.
Anyone that even reads the material and half understands it will pass.

As far as the whiners, snitches, and morons you
know what I think of you.  People like you allow me to command a
higher and higher rate every few months cause no one wants to work with
someone like that.  Keep it up.  I even had one crybaby by the name
of Louie Belt tell me he was going to have me removed from this list and have
my hotmail account terminated.  LOL.  Apparently he thought he was
so influential that he had the power to terminate my accounts just cause I
called him a name.  :)  Nice try.

For those that I've had positive interaction with
feel free to email me if you have questions or want to chat.

  See ya.

CCNP at Cisco Networking Academies ?

2000-07-20 Thread Billy Monroe

I am curious to see the length to CCNP program at Cisco Networking

I would like to know if anybody here have heard about CCNP offered in 4

I bought CCNA fastrack and ACRC. They were very heplful. What I liked was
the technical support provided by ccprep guys.

I am not sure if I will buy more though - it seems Boson tests are also good

Hope that helps.

DataComm Extension vs. CVOICE

2000-08-02 Thread Billy Monroe

I have an oppoturnity to attend a DataComm extension course. It is a 9 month
certification program, 3 hours a week. I believe this course will present
data and voice technologies and also ATM, FDDI, Frame-Relay.

My concern is that the course is only 3 hours a week. Do you think it is
more effective if I use the money to pay CVOICE course instead ?

Yes, I have been living in Seattle area for one year. For me the rain is not

A potential employer (an ISP) told me that they need to deploy a project to
enable network access to remote users. He mentioned they are considering
Aironet. Probably the distance is the key factor: if you are in a building
Aironet will provide wireless connectivity.

I mentioned VPNs because I thought VPNs could also be a solution to provide
connections between mobile or remote users with their corporate networks via
a third-party network such as a service provider ... (and please correct me
if I am wrong)

Real Labs or Virtual Labs

2000-05-19 Thread Billy Monroe

Hello:

I want to practice CCNP labs and I would like to know if virtual labs and
simulators (for example mentorlabs or others) would be able to provide the
ability comparable to a real hands-on lab.

Thanks,

I agree. In the beginning I thought MCSE was related to internetworking, but
now
I see that MCSE is regarding Windows operating systems. Typically MCSE
knowledge in networking is
superficial compared to Cisco subjects. Of course MCSE has its value.

ISDN in two 2514

Hello:

I would like to setup ISDN home lab using two 2514.
One router has a BRI interface. I have no ISDN switch.

Does anybody know if and how I can do it ?

I am also trying to setup using 3 routers (1 router configured as switch).

I am following the Hutnik's book. They recommend a configuration on
"serial0/0"... anybody could tell me what is serial0/0 ?
I can configure int s0, but not serial0/0.

Thanks,

Billy

Great Brad !
I was using four different models yesterday 2501, 2503, 2509 and 2514.
Actually I think the router with the BRI interface was a 2503...? I am not

Message: "IP routing not enabled"

2000-05-23 Thread Billy Monroe

Hello:

I would like to start a configuration file from scratch in a C2503 so I did:
#erase startup
#reload

The setup dialog appeared. I just entered the default configuration.

I attempted to configure interface s0 and used RIP. But when I entered
"router RIP" the IOS returned "IP routing not enabled".
What's the command to enable IP routing ?

Thanks,

Billy

OSPF & RIP

I answered that it is possible to overlap protocols, but it is not

I know that IGRP can be configured using the "variance" command to set

Is that correct ?

Re: CCNP and chances of finding a job

Well, what I am trying to do is get more theory doing the CCNP to have
chances to get a job like K Sacca described. I also got
a phone interview and I was successfull. During the face-to-face interview
with 7 persons I failed: most of questions were beyond CCNA level, and I
think that I could make it if I had achieved the CCNP knowledge. Of course a
degree and client-server experience and hands-on in the labs would be an
asset a job like that.

I think a good background in Unix would help to get a position at Cisco.
Most of their testing labs are using Unix.
What I have noticed is that most employers I talk requiring Unix experience
don't give too much attention for Linux knowledge.
I think it is not what they want to hear (yet)...

Re: OT: Does Cisco give away training for big $ purchases?

2000-06-01 Thread Billy Monroe

The company I worked for also spent big US$ on Cisco products:
The only training they allowed for Gold Partners were 2 days hands-on that
it happened every 3 or 4 months.
Knowledge is the real power and they don't give that for free. That's why I
think I will have to manage to pay training by myself...

By the way, could you clarify an information about VPN:

RAS is a network-to-network connection, correct ? RAS (MS) uses PPTP to
encapsulate PPP and establish a connection.
Is RAS a VPN or not ?

OSPF configuration - Please help

2000-06-06 Thread Billy Monroe

Hello:

I have two 2503 and I am following Hutnik's to configure OSPF.
I connected RouterA, s0 (DCE) to RouterB, s0(DTE).

When I enter #show ip ospf int I see the following:
...
Transmit Delay is 1 sec, State DOWN
  Hello due in...
...

The State should be "POINT_TO_POINT".
The routers don't see each other. (#show ip route doesn't display OSPF
entry).
I entered "no shut" and "shut" in both routers s0 interfaces but it didn't
work. Any idea of what is wrong ?

Configurarion is below.

Microsoft 'Routers'

I see that Microsoft has provided resources to configure OSPF and RIP in
Windows 2000 servers
to provide routing capabilities.

Has anybody evaluate this ? Do you think this could substitute 'real'
routers ?

Looking for an on line ISDN lab

2000-06-29 Thread Billy Monroe

I have heard that some people in this list sometimes kindly allow access to
their labs via the Internet.
If so, I would like to practice ISDN using Hutnik's for a couple of hours.

Please let me know if you have seen a good ISDN lab available free (or not
so expensive) where I can connect to via Telnet.

Thanks,

Billy

Thanks,

Billy

Frame-Relay using two routers

2000-06-29 Thread Billy Monroe

Sorry I know this question has been discussed before but I couldn't find the
e-mail regarding this one...

I have two routers (Router1 is the DCE) and when I configure Router1 as a
switch it returns the message '**Can not switch on same interface'.
Can you tell me why is not working ?

Here is the configuration:

!
hostname fakeswitch
!
frame-relay switching
int s0
no ip address
encap frame-relay
clockrate 38400
frame-relay lmi-type ansi
frame-relay intf-type dce
frame-relay route 100 int serial0 135
** can not switch on same interface

BGP exercises for BSCN

2000-07-10 Thread Billy Monroe

Hello:

I am studying for BSCN and I see that I need to practice BGP. I will use (3)
C25xx.

Do you know any link (or book) that contains good configuration exercises on
BGP ? I am using Hutnik's but I am not sure if this one has enough resources
on BGP...

Thanks,

Billy

Hi Oz,

Seriously, as a CCIE or Senior networking engineer do you have time to enjoy
your family and things that you like to do ?
