Boson practice tests [7:31209]

2002-01-07 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I am preparing for the written CCIE (Routing Switching) and I came across
the Boson CCIE practice exams. The questions look ok; does anybody have
comments on the quality of these practice exams ?
Your comments are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Hans

Schedule job in CiscoWorks2000 [7:28852]

2001-12-11 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I am trying to schedule a job to get the enable and telnet passwords changed
on all my switches and routers using the job scheduler in Resource Manager
Essentials. I understand how to schedule the job, but the execution fails
every time because the logon to the switches and routers fails. How is the
job scheduler supposed to now how to logon to a system ? Where are the
passwords stored ? Is there an option in CiscoWorks2000 where you can fill
in the default passwords, similar to the default SNMP community strings ?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Hans

Re: Trunking - VLANS - with NORTEL switch [7:27255]

2001-11-25 Thread Hans Stout

Hamid,

how far are you with the VLAN configuration on your BayStack 450 ? Use the
4VLAN Configuration Menu4 and the 4VLAN Port Configuration Menu4 to create
VLANs and to add ports. Use the 4Multilink Trunk Configuration Menu4 to
create trunks. The BayStack supports 802.1q trunking only, so you4ll have to
use that on your Cisco router as well. Let me know if you need any more
specific help. Below is a link to the BayStack 450 User Guide, which
contains all the configuration information you need in detail:

Cannot add dialer map statement [7:27078]

2001-11-21 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I am trying to add a dialer map statement to a dialer interface
configuration. Even after removing the existing dialer map statement, upon
entering the new one the system tells me that it cannot add the dialer map
because there already exists a dynamic one. There is nothing showing in the
running config, so I don4t know where the dynamic entry is stored. I have
heard that this problem can occur with early IOS versions and that the
workaround is to shut the BRI and then add the dialer map. This is not an
option for me because I have to add the dialer map remotely. Does anybody
have an idea ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Supervisor on Cat5509 not recognized [7:16588]

Hello colleagues,

I have installed a redundant Supervisor III in my Cat5509. The problem is
that the switch doesn4t see the module, it says that Module 2 is empty. The
system status LED on the module is RED, which probably means that one of the
self tests has failed. I am not sure how to find out what the problem is. Is
there a way to determine why the module isn4t recognized ?

Usage Guidelines

The banner cannot contain more than 3,070 characters, including tabs. Tabs
display as eight characters but take only one character of memory.

That is from :

It would appear that this may vary depending on software image loaded on
the device. Hope that helps..

Switch port failure on 3548 [7:15089]

2001-08-07 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I have a Cisco 3548 switch and I suspect that one of the switch ports is not
working. All 48 ports have a CAT5 cable connection, and all ports are
patched to the respective wall outlets, there are no active users yet, so
all the ports are down/down. When I do a shut/no shut on all the ports, I
can see in the log that all ports except one show that the port goes up and
then down. To my best knowledge, the fact that the port goes up/down after a
shut/no shut shows that the port is ok. The port that doesn't work goes down
right away. My question is: does this mean that the actual physical switch
port is defective, or that the CAT5 cable attached to the switch isn't
working, or that something on the path from the switch port to the wall
outlet isn't working ?
Thanks for your help in advance !

Mike,

thanks for your reply. The problem is that the switch is physically very far
away; I just want know if a shut/no shut that is not followed by an up/down
of the port inidcates that there is some sort of the problem with the switch
port or the cabling.
Thanks again in advance for your help.

The only way I can think that it would be a cable problem is if there was a
short in the wire somewhere. Unplug the CAT5 from the suspect port, do a
shut/no shut do you get the same result? Better still plug a PC into the
port, does it stay up/up? Then plug a PC in another port with an FTP server
on it and do some file transfers, then check for errors.

Hi Mike,

thanks for your answer. Does that mean that if a shut/no shut doesn't result
in an up/down, there definitely IS a problem with either the cabling OR the
switch port ? For now that is all I need to know...

Herr Stout,

Another easy way of determining if the problem is with the port or the
cable would be to plug both ends of the cat 5 cable(s) into a cable
tester. The manner Mike proposes is legit but I would want to
positively know that all pairs are 100%. Once you certify the cable as
being good, then the port would probably be the problem. Hopefully it
will be the cable...helluva lot cheaper!

100MB uplink to ISP [7:5026]

Hello group,

I have a customer who wants to know which Cisco router (and appropriate port
adapters) he needs to provide three 100MB uplinks to three different ISP4s.
According to my own research, the 7206VXR with three OC-3 SONET-STM1 cards
should do the job. Do you think this is the best solution ? I am not sure if
the 7206 can handle that much bandwidth.
Thanks for your input in advance.

IP extended access list question [7:4321]

2001-05-13 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I am trying to block all IP traffic from host A to host B except for ICMP
echo replies. This is the access list I hve configured:

access-list 100 permit icmp host 171.21.10.2 host 171.21.50.2 echo log
access-list 100 permit icmp host 171.21.10.2 host 171.21.50.2 echo-reply log
access-list 100 deny ip host 171.21.10.2 host 171.21.50.2

I then apply this access list as inbound to Ethernet0:

Ethernet0
ip address 171.21.50.1
ip access-group 100 in

However, when I try to ping 171.21.50.2 from 171.21.10.2, I get a no reply,
and the access list logs matches under the deny entry. I wonder if I am
missing something or might have the syntax wrong. Do you have any ideas ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Hans

CBAC on subinterfaces [7:3787]

2001-05-09 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I wonder if it is possible to configure context-based access control between
subinterfaces on the same router. Is the concept of external and internal
networks still valid when it comes to subinterfaces ?

Routing to different destinations from same source [7:3569]

2001-05-08 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I want to route to two different destinations from the same source
addresses. The souces are Windows NT machines with two default gateways; I
want everything going to the Internet going out to one of the gateways, and
everything else going out the other. I am not sure if configuring access
lists does the job; when a packet from the source is denied, does it then
automatically choose the other default gateway ? I guess policy routing
won't work, since the source is the same, only the destinations are
different. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance for your help.

Outbound access lists [7:3174]

2001-05-04 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I am trying to configure outbound access lists between 4 FastEthernet
subinterfaces (with 4 different VLANs configured), so that the VLANs cannot
communicate with each other. The problem is that inbound access lists work
fine, but when I configure outbound access lists (e.g. on FastEthernet0/0.1
to deny traffic to FastEthernet0/0.2) nothing happens. I wonder if this is
inherent to trying to configure outbound access lists between
(sub)interfaces on the same router. Does anybody know ? Thanks for your help
in advance.

Windows 95 Dial-Up to Cisco 1603 [7:2173]

2001-04-26 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I have a Windows 95 client that I want to be able to dial in to a Cisco
1603. The Cisco 1603 is configured for callback accepts. The problem is that
the client dials in, the call is then disconnected, the router initiates the
callback, but during the verification of username and password the
connection is dropped, and Windows 95 comes with an error message saying
that a compatible set of network protocols cannot be found. I have checked
all the settings, but am unable to find the reason. Any suggestions, or has
any of you come across this before ? Thanks for your help in advance.

ISDN B-Channel admined down

ISDN testing question

2001-02-08 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I have a question regarding how to test an ISDN connection for a dialer
interface that is mapped to a loopback interface. I am used to dialer map
statements where I can ping the IP address that the dialer is mapped to, and
that brings up the ISDN link. The interface I want to test now does not have
dialer map statements, but looks like this:

interface Dialer102
description IDSN Callback ID - Cologne, Germany
ip unnumbered Loopback1
encapsulation ppp
no ip route-cache
ip ospf cost 1500
no ip mroute-cache
dialer pool 1
dialer remote-name Router-Cologne
dialer idle-timeout 300
dialer string 0031302341498
dialer string 0031302882561
dialer string 0031302893245
dialer string 0031302883823
dialer caller 31302883823 callback
dialer caller 31302893245 callback
dialer caller 31302882561 callback
dialer caller 31302341498 callback
dialer load-threshold 64 either
dialer-group 1
no fair-queue
pulse-time 0
no cdp enable
ppp authentication chap callin
ppp chap hostname HUB-ROUTER
ppp multilink

Is there a way to test if the ISDN works without bringing down the serial
line ?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Hans

BRI interface not calling

2001-01-21 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I have a problem with two BRI interfaces on my Cisco 2610:
On both interfaces, I have static dialer maps configured to two separate
locations, so the total is 4 locations to be dialed, two on BRI1/0, and two
on BRI1/1. Th problem is that two calls at a maximum are made, and the
remaining two connections are not made. I can make one call on BRI1/0 and
one on BRI1/1, or two on BRI1/0, or two on BRI1/1, but never four at the
same time. I have verified that all locations are reachable, but it seems
that only two ISDN calls are allowed at the same time. I am unable to figure
it out; I have attached the router config, maybe you have an idea ?

Changing IP address on Ethernet

2001-01-10 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I have come across a problem on my LAN which I can't seem to figure out:
I need more host addresses on my LAN, so I changed the subnet mask on my
Ethernet IP address to a 22-bit subnet mask (was 10.226.192.254/24, is now
10.226.192.254/22). The problem I am having now is that I cannot ping the
Ethernet interface anymore (even from the same router).
Do I have to change the subnet mask for the default gateway on the hosts
attached to the LAN first before I can ping the interface ? It seems to me
that I should be able to ping my Ethernet interface, regardless of what IP
address is configured, as long as the status is up/up.
Thanks for your input in advance.

Regards,

Georg Pauwen

DRAM Upgrades for 1601R

2001-01-02 Thread Hans Stout

Hi colleagues,

I have two 1601R routers, and I want to upgrade them from their standard 8MB
DRAM to 16MB DRAM. I have a few questions about this:

1. Is the DRAM the same for the entire 1600 series ? So can I use the DRAM
form a 1603R for the 1601R ?
2. When I buy an additional 8MB of DRAM, can I add that on without problems
to the already existing (standard) 8MB in the 1601R ? (I am referring to the
problems that exist with PCs, when the PC needs matching SIMMs).

Thanks for your help in advance.

2501 not booting properly

2001-01-02 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I have a 2501 router that apparently doesn't boot anymore; when I turn it
off and on, the system/ok LED doesn't blink and immediately goes to
'steady'. I cannot get a router prompt through the console port, all I get
are some 'rubbish' characters. Has any of you seen something similar yet ? I
am used to see the system/ok LED blinking during the boot process and then
go to steady. Can that indicate a memory and/or hardware failure ?

How much memory do I have ?

2000-12-22 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

can you tell me how much memory is on the router when you look at the
following output:

cisco 3640 (R4700) processor (revision 0x00) with 43008K/6144K bytes of
memory.
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

I cannot figure out if I have to add the 43008K/6144K to get the total of
DRAM. In this case, do I have 51MB of DRAM ?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Disconnecting ISDN

2000-12-21 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

do you know if there is an IOS command that allows to disconnect an ISDN
call ? So far, I usually shutdown the BRI to disconect the call, but I have
a feeling there might be an easier way.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Frame Relay problem

2000-10-10 Thread Hans Stout

Hi colleagues,

I have a problem with my frame relay connection; the serial interface is
up/down, and when I debug the serial interface, I can see that the interface
is constantly trying to restart:23w5d:

What could be the reason for this ? I'll add the output for the sh int:

ATM deaming/line encoding problem

2000-09-08 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I have a problem with my ATM connection from my Cisco router to a Cisco BPX

When I run the 'sh cont atm 1/0' command, I get the following output (maybe

BGP on Cisco 1601 with 12.0(3)T IOS

2000-08-31 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I have two Cisco 1601's running IOS version 12.0(3)T on which I try to
implement BGP as a routing protocol. When I am in config mode, I can see
that BGP is an option, but when I type 'router bgp 10', the system returns
'unknown routing protocol'. Are there any special requirements to run BGP ?
Thanks for your help in advance !

Carrier transitions

2000-08-31 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

do you know what causes carrier transitions on a serial interface ?
Is it when the serial status changes from up/up to up/down, or when it
changes to down/down, or both ?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Standard Cisco passwords

2000-08-29 Thread Hans Stout

Hi colleagues,

do you know what the Cisco standard passwords are ? As far as I remember,
they are 'cisco' and 'sanfran', but I am not sure (also not sure about
lower/upper case).
Thanks for your help in advance.

3620 Modem Pooling

2000-08-06 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

do you know if it is possible to configure different modem pools on a 3620 ?
And if so, does it matter what kind of modem module I use
(6/12/18/24/30-port digital modem or 8/16-port analog modem) ? Can I just
use the modem-pool IOS command ?
Thanks in advance for your help, I couldn't find any docs online on this.

Georg Pauwen

Modem not connected to con/aux port ?

2000-08-03 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I wonder if any of you know if there is a way to find out by looking at the
configuration of a router if there is a modem connected to the aux or
console port ? I have a router which should have a modem attached to it, but
when I try to dial in, I get a NO CARRIER response. I suspect that the cable
from the modem is not attached to the router, but I cannot ask anybody at
the site if that is really the case. Now I wonder if there is a way (maybe a
DEBUG command) to find out if there is physically anything connected to the
aux or console port ? I can TELNET to the router and access the
configuration.
Thanks for your help in advance !

Regards,

Georg

Re: ISDN interface problem

2000-07-21 Thread Hans Stout

Hi Larry,

thanks for your answer.
What exactly do you mean by enabling the interface first ?
My concern is that I do not see any lit LEDs on the interface. Can you tell
me what a status of standby/down means ? How can I get the interface in
up/up (spoofing) status ? Also, what do the carrier transitions mean ?
I include the output from the sh int command:

I think you will need to enable the interface first
before you can set the switch type.
