Why wouldn't you just use wildcards to indicated the exact interface(s)?

Greetings Karl

I can't remember exactly where I read that , but I did. More specifically
you can't have ip unnumbered on an interface running OSPF because there is
no address to be neighbors with.

If what you want to do is have a router with some ospf interfaces and some
other interface not running ospf, and you want unnumbered on the non-OSPF
interfaces, I think taht would be OK.

Karl, Tom,

I think you are both mistaken--in fact, RFC 2328 contains multiple
references to unnumbered point-to-point links and what should be done about
them when developing an OSPF implementation.

The router doesn't need an exact interface IP address on a point-to-point
link in order to form a neighbor relationship. All OSPF packets on a
point-to-point link are going to be sent to the multicast address
224.0.0.5, and it really doesn't matter what IP address is the source in
those packets. The neighboring router is identified by its router ID, not
its address on the interface.

I have set up OSPF with IP unnumbered, and it worked just fine.

After introduction of CCIE Security, Cisco is now adding to the requirements
of attaining MCNS.
As of January, it will take four exams ( instead of one ) to become security
certified. See the above links.

Unbreakable Auth on Router?

2000-11-30 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

RE: Unbreakable Auth on Router?

2000-11-30 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

Thanks Russ (and to those of you who have also replied).

I guess what I should have said was, "I think my break sequences aren't
working - the ones I got from CCO." I say this because when I power off/on
the router, regardless of the keys I use, the process is NOT stopping. So
this led me to ask myself (because when my router won't answer back) two
questions (I'm using Hyperterm through Win2K Prof):

1) Are the break sequences I am using valid? (I got them from CCO.)
2) Can AAA be thwarted like the EN password can?

If 1) is yes but 2) is no...uh oh!
If 1) is no and 2) is yes...then I just have to figure out what works in
Win2K.

But I can't get past "Press RETURN to Start!"

Yes.. but when you do the password recovery (before you reboot the router
with the new enable password) check to see if AAA authentication is enabled
on the router.. if it is go into config mode and enter "no aaa new-model"
that will remove it.. save the config to startup-config and reboot..

Hope that helps
Russ..

RE: O/T ballots-per-second musings

2000-12-01 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

Our Head Voter Guy (Office of Registrar) said that it would cost San Diego
County $10 million to equip the country with computers for election
purposes. He estimated a cost of $4k/$5k per computer. I wonder which
outfit is offering the 200% markup? I can't believe that computers still
can not take a more active role in tabulation of votes, at the polls and
after the election.

Has anyone figured out the ballots-per-second (bps) transmission rate for
the ballots that travelled in a Ryder truck from Palm Beach County to
Tallahassee? &;-)

Seriously, do we recognize how ridiculous this situation is? With current
technology, the data should have arrived in seconds. We seem to have
scraped by the year 2000 without any major disasters caused by Y2K bugs.
However, the year 2000 election is a victim of ancient, buggy punch-card
readers. I call this the E2K problem.

The punch card readers in Miami-Dade County were unable to detect a vote
for president on 10,000 ballots. That's outrageous! Regardless of any
political wrangling about the significance of this problem, as computer
professionals, we should be asking ourselves, how could this happen?

We now have two kinds of proof (Y2K and E2K) that we need to take a more
active role in working with our users to dump ancient systems and upgrade
to newer and less buggy solutions. That's not an easy task, of course.
Finances, office politics, and risk aversion are just some of the many
reasons that users don't upgrade. But what are we doing to be more
proactive? Are we monitoring our systems to determine their fragility? Are
we taking action when we recognize potential problems? Are we designing
reliable systems that can adapt to changes? Or are we hiding behind our
21-inch monitors and praying that nothing bad will happen on our shift?

I'd like to see the computer industry get serious about developing less
buggy systems and upgrading legacy systems that are failure-prone. I'd
welcome a technical (non-political) discussion on this topic. Thanks for
listening to my ravings. &;-)

Kenny:

I hope you can calm down a second, take a deep breath and re-read the

I think you need to reconsider who you're posting to, or how you're replying
to posts on here when you are angry.

Chill the hell out and don't let this Cisco thing get to you. It's NOT
worth it. Now go pass your damn lab!

How in the world can this be considered "a decline in morales"? Maybe I'm
naive but how does this have anything to do with my morales? When you go to
the store and purchase something, what are you doing? Wait I'll answer YOU
ARE PAYING FOR IT. If there's an auction for something and you outbid
someone, what is that? Wait I'll answer YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT. As far as

then by that standard you are "IT whores" also. you are providing services

No no no, you guys have it all wrong...this isn't about money...he mentioned
a decline in Morales, and he's absolutely right - Hector Morales (star of
such comedy classics as "Oh God," "Herbie Goes Bananas," and "Three Amigos")
hasn't done *any* work since 1988's "Out of the Dark"!

ACRC v. BSCN

2000-09-25 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

For those who had the occasion to either take (or compare) the ACRC and BSCN
exams, did you feel they were very, somewhat or not similar? I've been
reviewing the ACRC guide to keep that info fresh, awaiting the BSCN guide,
and wonder if this is a good idea or bad. I also wonder that, if one knows
ACRC, will one have a good foundation for the BCSN (say a good 60% to 70% of
the knowledge) or are they too dissimilar of a guide/course to carry each
other?

Any thoughts would be appreciated...even off line!

Question about OSPF:

Once the DR/BDR are elected and network is converged, if a change is
detected, does the router noticing the change flood the area or send this
info to the DR so it can flood the area?

RE: Sniffer Pro 3.5

2000-10-20 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

Uh...whereas I don't necessarily disagree 100% with your reasons, I can't
imagine why anyone would want to just throw the money out and hope what they
get in return is worth the expense. Perhaps it's just me but before I buy
something, I at least try to discover it's pros and cons so I can get a
little better picture BEFORE parting with the dough. For example, before I
purchased my routers, switch and hub, I at least messed about on CCO and a
few websites. Hell, it makes NO SENSE WHAT-SO-EVER now that I think about
it - now appears as just laziness! Ok, so now I'm saying I agree with you
1%.

Your reasoning (and the original email's too) are sort of like the
UNSUBSCRIBE requests that the lazy fools send out ever so often. HOW DID
THEY GET ON HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE? WHY CAN'T THE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS
INCLUDED AT THE END OF EVERY - EVERY - EMAIL? It's all because they're
lazy.

RE: Certifications no good?

2000-10-24 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

I think a lot of people downgrade their certification status because of the
"one upmanship" prevalent in this field. For examples, read through this
list and see the "simple" questions asked that get the terse, "you're
qualified?" remarks in return. So many people are lacking in self esteem
that when they see a question asked by someone, they'd rather tear into them
about missing something explained in chapter 2, paragraph 3, section 4 in
this book or that book.

As an example, how many times does a person upgrade the IOS in a router? If
you do it only occasionally or worse yet, once when a new one comes out,
what's the problem with not recalling the exact procedures from memory? Ask
that question and you're very likely to get emails back with responses of
"re-take your CCNA" or something like that.

Don't read. Probobaly a waste of time -venting. Sorry for wasting your
bandwidth Paul.

Controversial?~~~Probobaly.

I have seen so many messages degrading certifications and talked to so many
people who have no respect for those who have achieved certifications. I can

almost understand where they are coming from when the person has no
experience, but the fact still stands that this person has studied and been
held accountable for the information.
I believe that certifications are by no means the definitive answer to
weather someone is good at something. the problem I have is those who
degrade certifications.
I believe there is a controversy over if certification is any indication
weather you know what you are doing. I will only say this, certification
says that one day after studying you felt you were ready to be tested on all

of the information covered in the exam objectives. It doesn't mean that you
had heard something about that one time or another, or that you can BS about

it. It means you know it. The bad thing is that it doesn't say that you have

done it a thousand times and are experienced at doing it (except CCIE).
I have met quite a few people who have a bunch of experience, but then
one day something different like HSRP comes along and they don't have a
clue. Let's say in that same instance the guy with less experience, but
reads the books for certs starts in checking virtual IP addresses, virtal
MAC addresses and questions vlans for load balancing. Does that make
experience worthless?
To truly be an ACE at this networking stuff I believe there must be a
balance. Too much book study with out enough application is not so good.
and too much experience without enough book study is not so good. This field

is going to get more competitive like it or not and technology changes fast.
  Enough already.

RE: Sniffer Pro 3.5

2000-10-24 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

Chris you missed this one big time.

The issue was(is) that the guy said now that he bought a product, can
someone help him. AFTER HE BOUGHT A PRODUCT HE WANTS TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT.
Will's question was didn't he do any kind of research or testing before
buying it?

Got a question for ya Will.

Have you ever had to diagnose network performance or response time
problems??? How about poor application performance on your network???

If so, what tools do you use???

I personally believe that any questions regarding the use of Network
Associates Sniffer products are valid in this or any study group pertaining
to network theory, design or certifications. Sniffer products are some of
the most widely used and trusted network troubleshooting tools available
today. Just ask any experienced Network/Systems Engineer.

All Cisco SE types that I work with have used these tools quite frequently.

I would strongly suggest taking a moment to think about how a study group
members question relates to networking in general before you flame them in
the future. Remember, network theory and troubleshooting are a BIG part of
most Cisco Certification exams...

Of course, this is just my personal opinion and does not reflect the opinion
of Cisco Systems, Inc.

I would guess that I'm not alone in my opinion however.

Please feel free to e-mail or call if you have any questions...

Thanks for your valuable time...

ACL Deny Statement & Wildcard

2000-11-15 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

I need to deny 2 consecutive network ranges. I'd like to combine these into
one statement. Here's my example, am I correct?

Example IPs: 100.16.0.0 and 100.17.0.0

I want to block on the .16 & .17 space:

access-list 103 deny ip 100.16.0.0 0.238.255.255 any

Thanks,

Subject: Re: ACL Deny Statement & Wildcard

use this -
access-list 103 deny ip 100.16.0.0 0.1.255.255

An easy way to look at it is that if your address ranges are consecutive
then the .16 above is the starting address and .1 is the number of networks.

  So it blocks 16-17.

Or look at bits -

.16 = 0001
.17 = 00010001

in the mask 0 = must match, 1 = don't care, so use
  0001

The .238 mask you put below would look like this -
  11101110

So it would allow the following networks
  0001
  00010010
  00010100
  00010110
  00011000
  00011010
  00011100
  0000
  0011
  00110010
  00110100
  00110110
  00111000
  00111010
  0000
  0010 and so on.

The only rule would be that the 5th bit had to be a 1 and the 1st bit had to

be a 0 (right to left)

hope that helps.

Mike

I'd say summarisation of these two addresses with wildcard is:

100.16.0.0 0.1.255.255

I've been trying to backward engineer the 238 you've got, but not too sure
where it came from.
Normal mask would be 255.254.0.0 so wildcard should be inverse (take all
octets from 255)
Been a long day. I'll very possibly realise I've messed up as soon as I
press send, but looks O.K.

Gareth

Firewall Help (PIX)

2000-11-16 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

Hello all - On the PIX ...

What the 'heck' does the fixup command do? I ask this after reading the
guide and parsing CCO.

I need to set up https/ssl on specific ports (a client wants to allow users
to use https through the specific holes) and thought I had to "fixup" the
proto to listen to the specific ports I want. Of course, the Pix doesn't
provide these literal names (in config), so would I just use stat/cond
commands? Which leads me to wonder just what fixup does.

Thanks!

Well said, Chuck. Cisco doesn't want certified people who can just plug
routers together. They expect you to understand protocol behavior, not just
configuration. They expect analysis skills, not just memorization, since
that is what you will need in the "real world."

Some of the CID questions were purposely written to make you take a second
look. You won't be able to select the right answer by simply applying basic
knowledge. You will need to start by thinking about the basics, and then go
beyond that to think about application of the basic behavior, exceptions to
the basic behavior, elaborations of the basic behavior, etc. This is
actually an improved test-question writing method, called the two-step
question by some people.

If you take your time, you can generally get into the mind of the
test-writer and figure out what they're getting at.

On the other hand, I have seen some test questions (especially sample test
questions) that are incomprehensible no matter how much head-scratching you
do, (especially the COLT tests which are quite badly written, at least the
ones I tried). But I think the actual tests are better than the sample
tests.

Isn't it that " the path the packet IS GOING TO TAKE to get to the

The "F" in FECN means forward, so I choose "a."

The packet arrives at the dest, notifying the dest that it experienced
congestion along the way, so that rules out "b." Which is actually the
correct answer if the question were "What is the purpose of BECN"

"c." is not a function of FECN nor BECN.

Sure wish "the router" was defined ;-) but this does keep it realistic ;-)

My first was a week late, the second one day early. Anyway, my 2 1/2 year
old knows how to spot a router and a hub (well, hubs and switches are a bit
hard to tell the difference between). He already has fun with patch cords
and such. I just have to make sure I keep my routers up high enough so that
he's not plugging one end in an ethernet switch and the other in a serial
wic or console port. Oh, and he also like to cause network loops with
crossover cables in my 100Base-T (only) hub that I have low enough for him
to get to (usually just powered off unless we're having a LAN party).

RE: Sysco cert question

2000-08-01 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

Actually, I have been involved with Sysco for well over 13 years (I could
have just said 14 years to be exact but I wanted to use "well over"). I
used to receive the food stuffs (again, I wanted to use "stuffs" because I
could have just left it at food) at the local dining room where I worked. I
remember getting stock options at 8 and now they're worth 8 1/4! I'm going
to retire in 37 years!

Mustard MUST always go in a yellow bottle but you should never re-screw the
lid on...that way, if the tip gets clogged (and invariably it will), it
helps the customer using the bottle get the right amount of mustard
required.

Does anybody know how many ounces of ketchup are in one packet? How many
mustard packets will be distibuted on an hourly basis?

Does mustard always have to go into the yellow squeeze bottle?

I am currently in the process of studying for it. Some much less motivated
colleagues say "Certification is worthless. What really matters is if you
know how to do your job" or "I don't have time to study".

I am pursuing this as it will lend further credibility to my resume and
compliment (or condiment) my other certs, such as SCFA (Sabrett Certified
Frankfurter Associate), TCFFT (Thin Cut French Fry Techician)and the lesser
known NCS (Nathan Certified Specialist).

Yes, you can self study, or if you really want to pay someone else, you can
go to an acredited school such as DeepFry Technical Institute.

For the lab, keep in mind that they will try to stop you up. They do things
such as clogging the mustard containers. Many people deploy similiar
techniques, such as those to unclog the Elmer's Glue bottle to get around
this one.

As Shawn mentioned, the 2.0 exam does have an emphasis on Mayonaise
Deployment. Keep in mind that mayonaise fails rather rapidly when mixed with
other condiments, possibly leading to the poisoning of the judges, which
will lead to a definite failure.

Also, there arae time limits on the ketchup deployment section of the exam.
I heard of several mechanisms that allow for more rapid deployment, such as
leaving the bottle turned over for several minutes prior to use and I have
also heard of people putting sharp objects such as knifes in the bottle to
help the flow. DO NOT GET THE KNIFE STUCK IN THE BOTLE, AS THIS WILL ASSURE
FAILURE!!!
DO NOT HIT THE BOTTOM OF THE BOTTLE, AS THIS MAY CAUSE THE KETCHUP TO FLY
UNCONTROLLABLY, POSSIBLY PELTING A JUDGE OR TWO.

There is a higher number of suicides in Seattle because of the overcast
weather. But it's only overcast when it's rainy JUST LIKE IT IS
EVERYWHERE ELSE

Were those local Seattle guys or they just wanted to
find a nice and rainy place to die?
That is a question.

I believe I learn best from hand on experience, There for I would appreciate
if any one can recommend any URL's or books with virtual labs. Possibly a

I have been asking arround and it seems to me that UNIX admins are way more
desirable than router admins. I guess from what I have been hearing is that
if you are solid in unix you are pretty much set for life. This is just
what I hear in the chicago area. Mainly HP-UX

RE: (no subject)

2000-08-02 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

I'd have no problem providing info IF the same questions weren't asked over
and over again because someone didn't take the time to read the very website
they used to sign up for the list.
I only post a question after I have visited CCO (or in this case, the darn
online bookstores) and not been able to find an answer. If you can't read
the posts, or do a little research on your own before posting, especially
for a presumably CCNA (the guy's asking for CCNP books), then join the darn
Microsoft list where they hand feed you everything.

Why don't you stop wasting bandwidth on answers like you've been providing.
If your going to reply to it at least add some information that the person
was looking for. I'm sure others would agree they don't want to continue to
sort through mails that just say "yes". If your going to contribute then at
least make it meaningful. Thanks in advance...

CBT Training Options (CCNP)

2000-08-03 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

I've been battling it out with a local company here in San Diego to begin
night classes geared towards CCNP. But thus far they're sticking to their
day only schedule. They've instituted that e-learning program but still, if
you can't get the time off to go to their site, you also can't get the time
to sit at work and do it.

This leads me to ask if anyone knows about good CBT training that covers the
tests for CCNP?

CCIE Written now, and hopefully will be going after a full- time cisco job,

Congrats.

Hard efforts should pay back now. But the world is not that way. I had
finished CCNP in March and have also finished CCIE written, but unable to
find an entry level job. That is how the certified people without exp are
treated in Toronto (Canada). My best advise would be try to gain hands-on
exp as much possible.

All the best.

Probably because all the security specialization is, really, is a bit of
Cisco's idea of security policy and then the rest is hands on work with
Cisco equipment. Oh, yeah, there is a bit on encryption and such, but
generally the exam covers policy, security threats, CBAC and other access
lists, and PIX configuration. The CCNP/Security is essentially a low level
security certification, and should in no way be confused with those guys who
make 300K doing complex security assessments and implementations for major
banks, ISP's,  and brokerages. :->

Cisco Announces Recertification Policy for Career-Certified Associates and
Professionals

Policy Highlights Commitment to Address Industry-Wide Need for more
Qualified Network Technicians

SAN JOSE, Calif., September 5, 2000 - Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader
in networking for the Internet, today announced the recertification policy
for its career-certified associates and professionals. The policy
highlights the Cisco commitment to address an industry-wide need for
qualified technicians who can solve the complex issues created by the
latest network technology.

"Our commitment to continue to provide world-class customer service is
dependent on our ability to make sure our certified professionals are
well-trained on the latest networking technology," said Tom Kelly, vice
president, Worldwide Training. "In today's fast-paced Internet economy
recertification is a tangible indication, to both IT professionals and the
organizations that employ them, that our career certification holders are
current on the latest technology trends."

Recertification has been part of the Cisco Career Certifications Program
since 1997, when the company implemented recertification for the coveted
Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE(TM)) certificate. Under the
guidelines of the Cisco Career Certification Program, career
certifications at the associate and professional levels, including Cisco
Certified Network Associate (CCNA(TM)), Cisco Certified Design Associate
(CCDA(TM)), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP(TM)) and Cisco
Certified Design Professional (CCDP(TM)) certificates, are valid for three
years. The CCIE and career specializations, including security, voice
access, network management, SNA/IP network management, LAN ATM and SNA/IP
integration, are valid for two years. Renewing a Cisco associate or
professional certification requires passing the appropriate
recertification exam before expiration. Alternatively, certifying at a
more advanced level also recertifies an individual's existing
certifications.

certified and licensed its numerous worldwide Cisco learning partners to
offer training needs analysis, certified instructor-led career courses,
access to Cisco learning tools and technologies as well as e-learning
editions of courseware for exam preparation. Go to
www.cisco.com/go/training to find a local Cisco learning partner.

Career Certifications Tracking System

The password-protected Cisco Career Certifications Tracking System
database, available on the certification Web site
(www.cisco.com/go/certifications), serves as the certified professional's
informational resource. Cisco uses the contact information from the
database to notify certified professionals about expiring certificates.
Thus, Cisco certified professionals are encouraged to regularly update
their contact information. In addition, the database tracks exam history
and certification progress for the more than 100,000 Cisco career
certified and specialized network professionals.

Exam Availability

Associate recertification exams are now available worldwide with
professional exams due to be available worldwide next month. The first
set of professional and associate Cisco Career Certifications expire on
September 5, 2001, giving certified network professionals a minimum of one
year to prepare, register, and pass the required recertification exam. Go
personal information, check certification expiration, locate the nearest
test center and register for a recertification exam.

RE: Decreasing # of CCIE's Worldwide

2000-09-07 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

I think it's because we're finding MCSEs are being paid more and that
originally, CCIEs were just made to generate people wanting Cisco's
certsK-I-D-D-I-N-G

It is interesting to see the decline.

PS - in reply to Chris Hagen - the recert process involves only a written
exam, you don't have to take the lab again... It's true about the
discounts... there is much motivation on the part of Cisco partners to keep
CCIE's current and on staff.

What I wanna know is, when a CCIE retires, do they retire his number too
(like with sports heroes)???

WildCard Masks

2000-05-12 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

While reviewing a client's access lists, I noticed they have some entries
where there are other numbers in the wildcard mask (e.g., 180.12.0.0

several entries like this one. Is there something I don't know or is this
possibly a mark of a bad typist?

Subject: Re: WildCard Masks

Actually, you can have more than just the 255 or 1 in a wildcard mask.

Try to remember that the wildcard mask bits are the exact opposite of the
subnet mask bits.

For example: In order to block a particular subnet in an access list,
131.111.8.0/21 for instance, would require a wildcard mask of 0.0.7.255.
That would block out the subnet 131.111.8.0

Make sense? Well, you can get the 7 in the wildcard mask 1 of 2 ways (that
I know of)

First, lets type out the subnet mask to make things a little easier.
255.255.248.0

The 3rd octect is only using 5 bits for the subnet mask (counting down from
128 i.e. 128+64+32+16+8=248). That leaves 3 bits in the octect; now, count
3 from THE OPPOSITE END (i.e. 1+2+4=7) and you've got the appropriate
wildcard mask #.

Another, possibly easier way of doing this is to take 255-248(the subnet
mask's 3rd octect) and that will also =7.

I hope this helps

RE: CCNP and chances of finding a job

2000-05-25 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

There are three types of IT people: those with certs and no experience;
those with both; those without certs but with experience. Obviously those
with both will command the most responsibility and money; those with
experience/no certs will command a little less; and those with just certs
will command even less. Are you the kind of person that believes you should
be paid well for your certifications? Or are you a person who understands
that "everyone must pay their dues?"

A CCNP/no experience probably won't start at entry level but will be close.
A CCNA/no experience will be entry level. Either way, if you apply
yourself, you'll advance quickly (more quickly if you're a CCNP first).
What it's going to boil down to is, your girlfriend is right (in my
opinion): you should start as soon as you can gaining experience.
Experience only makes the certifications easier and job prospects brighter.
Now if YOU have a problem being known as entry-level (and some people
without experience do sometimes think they should get paid as well as those
with experience), then that's a personal issue you must deal with. And
that'll make your goals much harder to accomplish.

What are the chances of a CCNP finding a job without prior work experience
with routers and such? I'm debating this issue with my girfriend. She
thinks that job experience is more important, and that I should be looking
for a job to move me up. I, on the other hand, don't think I can find much
of a job with just a CCNA and would rather get a CCNP, but I'm not quite
sure if just a CCNP by itself can land me a job. Any help would be
appreciated.

well, it depends on the employers. A lot of large enterprise employers
won't look at linux yet because it doesn't have certain reliability
features, and it lacks a long history in the market to prove itself.
But, that's changing quickly because of all the press linux has received
in the past several years including large amounts of support from
Netscape, Sun, HP, IBM, and many others. And in my opinion, after doing
unix admin for several years, I had no problem moving into
solaris/sunos/irix/hp/bsd administration after knowing linux really
well. It does, after all, include a mix of features from BSD/SYSv-ish
tools. Just read the red unix admin bible by Evi Nemeth and friends and
you'll get a good feel for the differences.

Sorry for the topic digression, this is a cisco only list after all.
But, it's been noted in several messages lately that obviously a good
working knowledge of an operating system is necessary to really function
well in a high level position. It is a piece of the picture, and
knowing capabilities of various operating systems is quite important.
It's like knowing all seven layers of OSI. How many CCNP/CCIE's out
there understand the frame format's for DS-1, or SONET, or what B8ZS and
ESF actually do? The OS implements all seven layers. Most network
engineers work primarily with layers 2-4. If you understand the
protocols outside these layers well it makes troubleshooting and
understanding networks magnitudes easier.

Back to your original question. Go get a free ($20 for the media) copy
of solaris x86 from sun's web site, play around, and then focus on what
you can do in linux (like sendmail, INN, BIND, etc) in your resume. And
by the way, if I remember correctly from a recent linux journal article,
Cisco's entire printing system is run off linux servers, with slightly
modified code.

I hate to get involved in this but I have seen some responses that were
not well thought out. I worked with a guy who had much experience here in
the DC/Metro area with routing and switching in a large government agency.
He moved out to the Denver area and the best offer he could get was $29k
with HP. He returned to the DC/Metro area to get $100k+. "I agree anyone
making less than 60k in this field is underpaid no matter where you live"
is not accurate at all. The market you live in will determine what you get
paid. Some areas have a small IT market with many people around with certs
and experience that will dictate lower pay. You make $60k in some areas and
you are rich. Go to NY city and you will be living in the streets. $27k
maybe good money in you area. All I can say is to look around and see if
you can make more.

Lest we become deluged by by prayers to the "Invisible Pink
Unicorn" or the "Multi-Tentacled Purple Squid', not to mention many other
slightly more mainstream religions, I think such chants and neditations
should be left off list. I would like to think that educated, highly
technical people would have no need for such mindless superstitions, but
alas, I am constantly reminded that while people can be VERY intelligent in
one area, they are extremely deficient in others.

Can we please keep our respective religious beliefs off line and all focus
on our goal of certification?

this is strictly theological piccadillo but it's the 'Prayer of St.
Francis.' disclaimer- Contrary to popular belief, we RCs worship neither
the saints nor the pope, so semantical inaccuracies like this tend to make
some of us a little edgy.
Seems appropriate that we can add hard work and study to a virtuous,
principled life prayer... the only thing we can't really claim is the
Franciscan vow of 'poverty, chastity, and obedience', especially if we're
studying for a certification that will allow us to earn $120K/yearly and
above.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to

I am curious if anyone would be interested in writing and trading questions

that works like (if not better) than the Boson tests. You can download a
demo version of the program at www.openwindow.com If we pool our labor it
would make the process more efficient.

Please reply to this group if you are interested.

Need for two hats?

2000-06-16 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

As I finish my Solaris certification (and continue on with CCNP), I still
wonder if there is really a need for the two skill sets (at once).

I want to work in and with a Cisco world so I wonder if having and
maintaining the two certifications (as opposed to just maintaining and
growing one) is "worth" it. It helps in salary, yes, but also take a lot of
time and effort.

Any thoughts or more specifically, any real-world examples on how the two
combined are being used?

Solaris and Cisco, eh?

Hmmm... Cisco Works? Openview? Shell or Perl scripts to update router
configs? Unix based Firewall before/after the router(s)? Many many other
thoughts...

The more you know, the more you can do. Certification is proof of what you
know (in a way...) to *potential* employers, helping you to get paid for
that knowledge.

Time and effort? Hey, life is work pal! You get what you play for...
