Cisco PVST plus [7:75158]
hi, I am wondering what is the implication if I have a network whereby Cisco Per Vlan Spanning Tree is implemented with PVST plus and I plug in a external switch such as the Hwa Wei switch that doesn't seem to support PVST. does it mean that I could only have one vlan on the hwa wei switches itself. thank Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=75158t=75158 -- **Please support GroupStudy by purchasing from the GroupStudy Store: http://shop.groupstudy.com FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html

Re: Cisco Secure VPN 642-511 [7:73919]
Just received e-mail from Cisco that they would send me the INFOSEC letter of recognition after I signed the Cisco Certification Agreement. I am spending time on other interesting stuffs which is not Cisco and not sure if I would sit for recert. Kevin Wigle wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] on the same page is an INFOSEC Professional link. Cisco has been granted rights to award this cert. It is NOT a Cisco cert. Which is cool because once it is awarded there is no need to recertify, it is permanent. Which is opposite to everything Cisco does - especially CCSP - to recert CCSP you have to take all 5 exams again. Hopefully by the time people get 3 years in CCSP Cisco will have a single recert exam like they do for CCIE/CCDP/CCNP I might do the security exams once to get the INFOSEC cert and then forget the recert on the Cisco stuff. Alan Ho wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] No. What are the above requirements? Thanks Alan Content of e-mail from Cisco:- + Cisco Security Training Leads to Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Professional Certificate In April 2003, the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) awarded Cisco formal certification recognizing that Cisco security courseware meets the 4011 training standard. This standard is intended for Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Professionals responsible for the security oversight or management of critical networks. This formal NSA and CNSS certification gives Cisco the authority to recognize those candidates who have demonstrated that they have met this training standard. To be eligible for the INFOSEC Professional certificate, candidates must be CCNA certified and pass these security exams: a.. SECUR-Securing Cisco IOS Networks (or MCNS) b.. CSPFA-Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced c.. CSVPN-Cisco Secure Virtual Private Networks d.. CSIDS-Cisco Secure Intrusion Detection System (or IDSPM) This certificate indicates confidence in the competency of your skills. The 4011 standard for INFOSEC Professionals applies to all U.S. Government departments and agencies, as well as to its contractors. Therefore, this certificate will help you meet current or future Federal employment requirements. In environments where these requirements do not apply, you can use this certificate to demonstrate that you possess the knowledge and skills needed to oversee and protect critical information infrastructures and networks. On July 1, 2003, candidates in the Cisco Career Certifications Tracking System who meet the above requirements will be recognized as an Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Professional and will receive a letter of recognition from Cisco. Candidates who partially meet these requirements can track their progress using the online tracking system as with all Cisco certifications at www.cisco.com/go/certifications/login. I do not have problem with passing writing CCIE exam, but what about practical exam of 2 days duration. I have found some programs on the net. But is it enough to pass without practice. I have passed my CCNP by only reading books and downloading simulation programs. Can somebody give me advice whether I could carry on without real hand on experince? Is there some way to volonteer to work for free? Is there some way to get free CCIE Lab experience? Question on Traffic on the internet [7:65148]
I am wondering about this question, if my vendor told me that their server are resided locally and I assumed that traffic out through my ATM with 2Mb local and 256Kb International will off course travelled through the 2Mb local leased line nad considered local traffic, I check the IP assign from Arin whois and found that it was indeed locally assign, however, when I did a tracert or pathping in Win2K, I found out that it actually route through a router with ip which is assign in the US from Arin whois then to the vendor server, does it mean traffic is actually travelling through the international pipe from my ATM or consider local, My question is how will ISP determine your traffic whether it is local or international traffic , is it base on the Destination IP or base on the Router IP it is directed to. hope someone is able to understand my question and shed some light. thanks Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=65148t=65148 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Layer 3 switching [7:63304]
hi, I am trying to have a clearer picture of the layer 3 switching concept. Assuming that I have a Core Catalyst 6 series switch with layer 3 switching capabilities, I have a Access layer switch connected to the core with two port label Vlan 1 subnet 1 and Vlan 2 subnet 2, when frames is sent from from Vlan 1 to Vlan 2 on the same Access switch, my understanding is that for layer 3 switching , it will evoke a route one and switch the rest concept , my question is that, after the first route , if no Access list has been created, will the the Access switch be smart enough to perform internal switching, that is , frame direct from Vlan 1 to Vlan 2 internally within the Access switch. If the answer is no, Are there switches on the market that is routing by this concept, please advice , thanks to all the guys who have tried to entertain all my questions Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=63304t=63304 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Please check my logic: ospf / frame-relay / broadcast [7:60715]
On a non broadcast network, using the keyword neighbour will allow the DR to start the adjacency with the indicated neighbours. Once the adjacency is completed, all ospf traffic between neighbours will be unicast. Therefore on such networks, you do not need to add the keyword broadcast on the frame-relay map statement for OSPF to work. [ However not having the keyword broadcast may affect other network functions that depend on the broadcast traffic, therefore it is a good idea to put the keyword broadcast in the frame-map statement]. Any flaw in my logic? Evidence: (you can see here that r1 is sending to r2 (10.10.1.2 ) , r3 (10.10.1.3) and r5 (10.10.10.5) via unicast. You can see that r2 is responded with unicast. r1#debug ip pac 08:26:51: IP: s=10.10.1.1 (local), d=10.10.1.3 (Serial0/0.1), len 76, sending 08:26:51: IP: s=10.10.1.1 (local), d=10.10.1.5 (Serial0/0.1), len 76, sending 08:26:51: IP: s=10.10.1.1 (local), d=10.10.1.2 (Serial0/0.1), len 76, sending 08:26:51: IP: s=10.1.1.1 (local), d=224.0.0.5 (Ethernet0/0), len 64, sending broad/multica r1#debug frame pack int ser 0/0.1 08:32:51: Serial0/0.1(o): dlci 103(0x1871), NLPID 0x3CC(IP), datagramsize 80 08:32:51: Serial0/0.1(o): dlci 105(0x1891), NLPID 0x3CC(IP), datagramsize 80 08:32:51: Serial0/0.1(o): dlci 102(0x1861), NLPID 0x3CC(IP), datagramsize 80 --- on R2# 08:43:16: IP: s=10.10.1.1 (Serial0/0), d=10.10.1.2, len 76, rcvd 0 08:43:25: IP: s=10.10.1.2 (local), d=10.10.1.1 (Serial0/0), len 68, sending 08:43:25: IP: s=137.20.20.1 (local), d=224.0.0.5 (Ethernet0/0), len 64, sending broad/mult icast - router configuration r1#show run int ser 0/0.1 Building configuration... Catalyst 1600 Token Ring Report - [7:56671]
After a very long trial and error procedure and a bit of luck, I finally figured this switch out! There are no commands to setup VLANS from the command-line on this switch. You must use the TrueView Manager software which is available for free download at: http://www.madge.com/downloads-software-archived.asp Once on the page above, you want to download from the link: Smart Ringswitch Software R4.3 - Dec 00 (for RS Plus and RS Express only) When you open the download, the software will install automatically. The rest is obvious Pierre-Alex NB. This switch run the same code as the SmartRing Switch from Madge. If want a full documentation of the Cisco 1600 Token Ring Switch (since Cisco Documentation on this Switch is very slim), you should go to the Madge Web site. Duplicating Address on HSRP [7:56431]
hi, I have been having this problems recently, Wonder if anyone could help me out on this one I am running a Collapsed Core Model with two Catalyst 6000 running on HSRP for redundancy , all link connect to the Access switches are Catalyst 3500 series with redundancy link and PVST Plus implemented (The two Catalyst 6000 are defined as primary and secondary Root for all vlan except for VLAN 25. However, one direct link from the Core Bridge's port is connected without redundancy link)VLAN25 to 7206 Router interface(Root Bridge). Recently , the Router interface seem to be faulty and the whole network was town (affecting other Vlan) my understanding is that it should not affect other VLAN. Error message as follow was given Oct 12 13:15:41: %STANDBY-3-DUPADDR: Duplicate address 10.25.0.1 on Vlan25, sourced by .0c07.ac19 Oct 13 16:25:41: %STANDBY-3-DUPADDR: Duplicate address 10.25.0.1 on Vlan25, sourced by .0c07.ac19 Oct 15 22:31:02: %STANDBY-3-DUPADDR: Duplicate address 10.25.0.1 on Vlan25, sourced by .0c07.ac19 Oct 15 22:41:01: %STANDBY-3-DUPADDR: Duplicate address 10.25.0.1 on Vlan25, sourced by .0c07.ac19 A reload on the Gigabit module was needed in order to solve the problems. I am not quite sure what could have cause this problems , anyone care to enlighten me , thank My guess is that the faulty interface cause a recalculation for STP as the Root is gone and that cause the link to be lost between the two catalyst and thus resulting in a loop Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=56431t=56431 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

BGP Best Path Algorithm -- Trick [7:56356]
OK, from Cisco http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/459/25.shtml Step 3: Prefer the path that was locally originated via a network or aggregate BGP subcommand, or through redistribution from an IGP. Local paths sourced by network/redistribute commands are preferred over local aggregates sourced by the aggregate-address command. Step 4: Prefer the path with the shortest AS_PATH Step 5: Prefer the path with the lowest origin type: IGP is lower than EGP, and EGP is lower than INCOMPLETE My question: In step 3 if a path is locally originated within a AS, it's path will always be shorter than any path learned through over means. So what is the rational for this step? I bet it is used in some trick configuration and I admit I have run out of imagination... Any hint would be greatly appreciated. RE: Outlets England [7:53864]
Great Britain Wiring I got to England after a long 15-hour trip ... On my arrival I immediately went to a Electric shop to buy British Power Cord. Those are relatively cheap about 2 pounds something each, but I needed 12 of those for my equipment. The lad other there was very kind, he told me that I could make my own cord from my American Power cord using a socket that only cost half a pound. Here how it goes in England: Green or Yellow is grown Blue or Blank is neutral Brown or Red is live The process is pretty simple but quite time consumming: with a sharp knife to strip the wires, a flat screw driver and a Philips screw driver I made a plug every 10 minutes) I also bought surge protectors at the store. They are not cheap out there (about 8 pounds for a 4-plugs surge protector and 12 pounds for 6-plugs). Basically my total cost of conversion was: 6 pounds for the plugs + 48 pounds for the surge protectors (less than $100) ... This is man ping under OBSD 3.2 -stable, i386 arch +++ -f Flood ping. Outputs packets as fast as they come back or one hundred times per second, whichever is more. For every ECHO_REQUEST sent a period ``.'' is printed, while for every ECHO_REPLY received a backspace is printed. This provides a rapid display of how many packets are being dropped. Only the superuser may use this option. This can be very hard on a net- work and should be used with caution. RE: Fwd: Re: BGP loop [7:51169]
Hey Pete, Thanks for the explaination. It does make sense now! There were two things I was not aware of: 1) Routers prefers the EBGP routes due to E vs I preference 2) You are only allowed to advertise your best path for a particular NLRI I went back to my books and tried to find references on the first point. This is what I found: (Doyle, TCP IP vol2 : page 115) 1) Prefer path with the highest administrative weight 2) Prefer path with highest Local_Pref value 3) Prefer path originated locally i.e. from an IGP 4) Prefer path with shortest AS_Path 5) Prefer path with lowerst origin code 6) Prefer path with lowest multi_exit_disc value 7) Prefer EBGP paths over IBGP path 8) Prefer path with shortest path to bgp next_hop 9 install equal-cost routes in the Loc-RIB (maximum-path enabled) 10)prefer path with lowest BGP router ID (maximum-path not enabled) There is no mention of EBGP path versus IBGP. Worse, if I was to go by the rules above I would have to conclude that R4 should have chosen the path via AS102 because of the highest LocPref. (see below) R4sib BGP table version is 3, local router ID is 192.168.250.4 Status codes: s suppressed, d damped, h history, * valid, best, i - internal Origin codes: i - IGP, e - EGP, ? - incomplete Network Next HopMetric LocPrf Weight Path * 172.16.0.0 10.10.4.2 0 100 101 i * i 10.10.2.1 100 0 102 101 i There must be a set of rules out there that precede the rules above ... Where did you learn about those? Are they published some place? Thanks, Pierre-Alex Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=51202t=51169 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: Fwd: Re: BGP loop [7:51169]
Hi Pete, Here is the reference for rule 2: You are only allowed to advertise your best path for a particular NLRI Internet Routing Architecture (Second Edition), Sam Halabi page 155 The best routes, as identified by the decision process, are placed in the Loc-RIB. These routes become candidates that can be advertised to other peers or placed in the IP routing table. If a route is not placed int he Loc-RIB, it cannot be placed in the Adj-RIB-Out for advertisement to peers Still looking for a reference to Rule 1 Pierre-Alex Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=51203t=51169 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: break via reverse telnet [7:51192]
That's correct... If you want to use a different escape character use the command escape-character followed by the ASCII number Example: config t line vty 0 4 escape-character 1 where: 1=A 2=B 3=C etc... BGP loop [7:51169]
This is the network: AS101(R1) --- AS102 (R2) --- AS103 (R3)--- (R4)-AS100(R0) to AS101 (R1) (R3 and R4 are IBGP neighbors) I have route 172.16.0.0 on AS101 (R1) that is advertised via BGP. When i do a show ip bgp, the only routers that have two paths to 172.16.0.0 are R3 and R4. R0 and and R2 only have on path Given that I have a loop, I would have expected R0 to also have a path to 172.16.0.0 via As103 and R2 to also have a path to 172.16.0.0 via AS103. Do I have a configuration problem or is this the default behavior of BGP that it won't accept another path if it already has the information from a directly connected neighbor? Is this to prevent loops? Has anyone used this self-study tool (TRNG-800237, CSIDS 2.1) ? Does it help in getting familiar with the CSPM's GUI interfaces if one does not have hand-on experience in config 4200 series sensors and CSPM ? Re: Huawei routers - a.k.a. futurewei.com [7:49778]
Groupstudy, I'd be very very surprised if Huawei violated Cisco's rights, simply because Huawei is the largest networking gear company in China, if they did anything suspicious, Cisco would surely find them. From what I know, Huawei is a pretty ethical company for a multi national corporation, and they sponsor a lot of research projects in Chinese universities. For the question in an earlier thread, Hua means China, Wei is effort or achievement. Alex Ron Tan wrote: Hi group, Huawei routers were introduced into the local market sometime in the past 2 months in an asian networking exhibition called Communicasia. That's where I met the Huawei distributor whom had volunteered to provide a demo set for me to play with (myself from an international mnc, has current projects to revamp our LAN/WAN structure) and guess what, my boss is requesting me to have a look at their routers ! The day the router came into the office, I noticed that there were no manuals provided. After meddling with the router, I believed that there was no need to request for one in the first place ! There will be no requirements to load the box with IOS, it is IOS (with a bit of differences). The whole thing was CLONED ! I'm not too sure about reversed-engineering but more on how Cisco is going to protect their market dominance. With boxes selling for 30-40% cheaper, I guess lots of ppl will be rushing off to buy it. Guess might as well I pack my bags for China to get a new set of certifications. RE: Voice of IP / Frame-Relay and remote labs [7:48947]
That is good ... but does the fact that the modem ring and indication that I have a proper voice link? Could it be that if picked up the phones that I would not be able to hear anything from the other side? And could a simple debug demonstrate that I have a crystal clear voice connection on the other side with no echos, etc Seems to me that I would be missing quite a lot in doing a voice lab other the Internet. Are my assumptions correct? Or am I just paranoid ... RE: PIX 520 Motherboard repair replace [7:48959]
I don't know the details, but I would imagine that the boot roms are different. I can't really see Cisco using a Phoenix bios... Finesse is the original OS used in PIXes, the boot roms probably have the Finesse kernel inside. Larry Letterman would probably know for sure. Alex Calorifer Gogu wrote: A couple of weeks back I bought for about $100 a defective CISCO PIX 520. The box came complete with one 16 MB Flash card and one NIC. The box was sold to me as Motherboard defective it is the Intell Al440LX moteherboard. I took apart PIX boxes before at work and noticed that they were actuall PC Mobos. That is why I reasoned that repairing the PIX 520 should be only a matter of replacing the board with an identicall one that retails for no more than $60. I also noticed that the newer boards on the PIX 520's are Intel SE440BX2 without sound modules. I went ahead and bought the new board and installed all cards but when I power up I get no console output. I reasoned that the Flash card might be bad and I installed one with 2 MB, still same results...No console output. I went to CCO and downloaded the Boothelper utilities to boot the PIX from the Floppy but that does not help either. I have read multiple discussions about Clone PIX and FrankenPIX where people stated that you can build one if you just have the Flash card... Aparently there is more to that. Any Ideeas? CISCO TAC told me that there is special drivers for the console port onboard the original Motherboards on a chip. I have some doubts about that considering that in all the times I contacted TAC with different issues I got vague answers and they allways missed the point regardless of the fact that I have a Partner contract. Re: Cisco VPN client and NAT [7:47430]
So how does the Linksys or cisco 800 handles the IPSec thru PAT then ? Thanks. Alex Lee Lidiya White wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... PIX doesn't support IPSec transparency/IPSec over TCP. Concentrators do. It all depends on the device that is between your client and PIX, that is doing PAT. IPSec uses ESP protocol, that doesn't have ports, so how can you perform PAT (port address translation) for a protocol that doesn't understand port concept? Some routers can pass IPSec through the PAT (like Linksys, Cisco 800). So if the router/device that is doing PAT is IPSec aware, then you should be able to pass IPSec through. If not, then you have to make sure that one-to-one address translation happens for your VPN clients, not one-to-many (PAT)... Hope this helps... RE: Benchmark CCIE [7:47320]
Thank you for the Tips Bernard. I will change my bad habits :) Just curious... When you configure your routers do you enter all the commands in global config mode, then interface mode, then router mode ? Or do you configure the routers according to the sequence in which the router operates (for example: Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 3)? I have found that when I configure my routers the second way, I feel much more in control of what is going on (because the config is logical). The down side is that I take much more time because I am some how thinking about the process while I am doing it. On the other hand, when I configure from memory (i.e. all commands in global mode, then interface mode ...) there is no internal dialog but things are going much faster and I can keep within the timeline. I would like to know how the folks who took the CCIE and those who are close to taking it configure routers under time presure: memorization of configs or sequence in which the router operates Thanks, Pierre-Alex Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=47384t=47320 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

OT: remote router IOS upgrade best practice [7:47283]
Hi group, I am trying to get info from the Groupstudy mail list archive as I remember this was posted several times before. It seems that the archive is having problem, gives me error message 'Glimpse Index Not found'. Can anyone offer some insight ? I have two 1720, each in a different subnet. One router had two 'memory allocation error' problem in two months. Both times required power-cycle the router. Opened a TAC case but could not find any memory hardware issue. The two 1720 are linked by a fractional frame-relay with an ISDN BRI dial backup. TAC said there could be IOS bug related to ISDN BRI, recommended us to upgrade from 12.1.1 to 12.1.15. Anyone has similar problem ? RE: ISDN -- challenge! [7:46496]
From router B, I pinged a boggus destination. This triggered the bri interface on router B. Here is the output of the debug dialer events from Router A. You can see that router A (for no apparent reason) is trying to call router B (even though it is router B who initiated the call.) Of course the result of this is that the isdn timers will time out because the only channel available is busy with the call initiated by router B. Why would router A attempt to call the next hop? RE: ISDN -- challenge! [7:46496]
You have default routes pointed towards one another. You ping an address that doesn't exist on either router. The first sends it off to the second. The second doesn't know what to do with it so sends it on to its default which is the first. I do agree with your statements ... However, what is the need to open a second channel when there is one already opened? Shouldn't Router A use the already existing channel? Re: ISDN -- challenge! [7:46496]
Ok, here are the result of my tests (cummulative) 1) I gave the loopbacks unique IP addresses and tested result: no change 2) I assigned isdn1 f0/0 to vlan11 and isdn f0/0 to vlan12 on isdn1 f0/0 ip address was 192.168.10.1/24 on isdn2 f0/0 ip address was 192.168.20.1/24 I left the default route unchanged on both routers and tested result: no change 3) I remove the default route and created specific routes instead on isdn1: ip route 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.1.2 on isdn2: ip route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.1.1 result: no change. When the first bri channel was up, I was able to ping nor the two fast ethernet interfaces nor the two bri interface. Strange!!! 4) I added the keyword name to each map statement (as suggested by Gaz) on isnd1:dialer map ip 172.16.1.2 name isdn2 broadcast 5554000 on isdn2:dialer map ip 172.16.1.1 name isdn1 broadcast 5551234 result: double success. RouterA (isdn1) did not try to initiate another connection AND I was able to ping the fast ethernet interfaces and the bri interfaces. See below: isdn2#ping 192.168.10.1 Type escape sequence to abort. Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 192.168.10.1, timeout is 2 seconds: 01:12:30: ISDN BR0/0: RX on B1 at 64 Kb/s 01:12:30: ISDN BR0/0: Event: Accepting the call id 0x10 01:12:131009057551: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface BRI0/0:1, changed state to up 01:12:30: ISDN BR0/0: TX - CALL_PROC pd = 8 callref = 0x94 01:12:30: Channel ID i = 0x89 01:12:30: ISDN BR0/0: TX - CONNECT pd = 8 callref = 0x94 01:12:30: Channel ID i = 0x89 01:12:30: ISDN BR0/0: RX - CONNECT_ACK pd = 8 callref = 0x14 03:55:06: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface BRI0/0:1, changed state to up. 01:12:32: BR0/0:1 DDR: dialer protocol up.!!! To summarize: 1) Without the name keyword, routerA attempts to initiate a connection on receiving a connection initiated by router B. 2) Once the channel setup from B is up, data traffic does not flow even with proper routes. My gut feeling is that name keyword is preventing data traffic to flow between the two routers , even when the channel is up! This would explain why routeA is attempting to open a new connection even though there is a channel already up. routerA must be thinking that it is not allowed to use the already existing channel to reply to router B ... but then it would mean that something must have leaked from A to B to prone routerA to initiate a connection ... but what if not ip data? I will do some more research on this and post my findingsremaksquestions in a next post. Router A and Router B are connected to an Atlas 550 via BRI interfaces Router A ATLAS --- ROUTER B Both router are configured with DDR Dialer maps so that Router A can call router B or vice-versa (basic stuff). When Router A is called by Router B, Router A answers normally and the link goes up, but then (surprisingly), Router A attempts to initiate a connection to Router B . RE: Pix don't route [7:46356]
Wayne, Why not use the router to terminate the links, and put the PIX behind the router? The PIX will inspect the traffic, and the router can send traffic to different links depending on where it originated from. Usually a 515 may be a better solution because it has a DMZ interface where the server can sit on, but I guess there is a cost concern. Alex Wayne Jang wrote: Hi, The Pix don't route, but can I do this? I have a 2 server 20 user small office. I have a Pix 506 sitting in front of a 2621 with a T1 and a DSL link to the Internet. I'm not looking to load balance or even do redundancy. I just want traffic from the servers to use the T1 and I want traffic from the users to use DSL. I could use access-lists on the 2621 to direct the traffic based on source address, but how will the 2621 know where the traffic came from? Won't all traffic have a source address of the Pix outside interface? What if I Nat the servers(on PIx) so that they will appear to have a different source IP than the users who will be behind the global outside address? I'll need more public addresses, but that would be fine. I can't get any help from Cisco Pre-Sales because they aren't sure. I can't get an engineer that knows more than me (not much). My fall back plan is to only use the 2621 and have a firewall IOS. But I would rather use the Pix, especially because we have already quoted the above solution and are working to save face. RE: SNMP Management Using a Switch [7:46196]
Switches can do Layer 3 switching (hardware base routing) if they have a router module or a router switch feature card. Pierre-Alex -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 10, 2002 8:16 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: SNMP Management Using a Switch [7:46196] I have a question regarding switches. Can I connect multiple hosts together on a single switch? I though switches can only perform layer 2 switching and not layer 3 routing. Am I right?
