HSRP + ARP Problem [7:73098]
Bit of a strange one this. We have 2 7206 routers running HSRP that are support by our telecoms provider. The fast ethernet interface of each is connected into our 2950 along with a firewall. >From the switch, or firewall, I can ping either of the 'real' ip addresses but not the virtual address. I have used debug arp and seen the arp request go out for the virtual address (the telco has done the same and see's the request come in) but there is no reply. If we configure a static arp entry it all works fine. Anyone ever experienced anything like this??? Per-destination load balancing [7:72944]
Could someone please confirm the following to be true (taken from CCO): "Per-destination load balancing allows the router to distribute packets based on the destination address, and uses multiple paths to achieve load sharing. Packets for a given source-destination host pair are guaranteed to take the same path, even if multiple paths are available. For example, given two paths to the same network, all packets for destination1 on that network go over the first path, all packets for destination2 on that network go over the second path, and so on. Per-destination load balancing is enabled by default when you start the router, and is the preferred load balancing for most situations." It was my understanding that per-destination load balancing was based on the destination address only and not on the source/destination pair. If someone could clarify it would be much appreciated. Route Metrics [7:70958]
I have a situation whereby I want to perform load balancing across 2 links. The problem is that the router which will have to perform the load balancing learns one route via EIGRP and the other from a static route. I know how to alter the administrative distance of the static route but I'm not sure on how to tweak the metric. Re: so how does IGRP unequal load-balancing work anyway? [7:66667]
I can't remember the exact terminology but an IGRP router is aware of a neighbors metric to a destination as well as its own metric to the same destination. The router will only consider routes to be valid if the upstream router's metric to the destination is lower than its own metric to the same destination. This prevents the problems you mentioned below. You may want to get a second opinion on this! Using only a Chinese AC power cord and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly rebuilt the network core of major co-location facility after the roof fell in. I used to play games, but now it's serious. I am the subject of numerous urban myths and I am the creator of a few as well. When I'm bored, I test fiber optic cable, calculate power loss sums on UTP and the minimum refraction index for 50 micron multimode fiber. I mean, what IS the point of it ? I understand that DLSW and Source Route Translational Bridging actually has a reason for existence. It's not just IBM playing a practical joke. Really. I enjoy urban guerilla activities. I can build a 802.11b parabolic dish antennae using surplus antennae from defunct satellite companies and a juice can. It has better performance than off the shelf products. I think that having a wind generator and solar array as power backup for my practice lab is not only responsible preparation, it's environmentally friendly too. On Wednesdays, after work, I repair old monitors free of charge for my local charity. I know that canonical to non-canonical conversion is not about religion, it's about "ART." Microsoft geeks worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear, which I don't understand -- it was supposed to be funny. I don't perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller number ten and have won the cash jackpot. I can speak IPX NLSP, AppleTalk, ATM PVC, QoS, and BGP to name a few, and redistribute routes at will, with filtering, using non contiguous masks. I install IPV6 on customer sites whenever I can, just so I can play with it. Same for OSPF NSSA. Children trust me. I can hurl squishy giveaway tradeshow toys at sales personnel with stunning accuracy, and ensure that the dweeb from administration gets the blame. I have charisma beyond normal mortals; if I didn't the boss would have sent the other guy to this exam. I once read Cisco Quality of Service, Caslow Bridges and Routers 2nd Ed, and Jeff Doyles' Routing TCP/IP Vol2 in one day, and still had time to do practice on a Frame Relay multipoint network, using OSPF and IGRP, split horizon, route maps and ISDN. I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket and I use a link state protocol to calculate the shortest path to get there. I have performed several covert operations with the CIA. It was kind of fun having them follow me around. I know that security and privacy is a phantasm-like myth created by "security companies" to extract money from IT Managers who can't implement a decent security policy. But it's great fun to play with. I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. I know exactly how much coffee my body will take to sustain me at peak function. While on vacation, I successfully negotiated with the hotel to fix their network in return for free accommodation. The laws of society do not apply to me. I bal

RE: caller name ID/call manager [7:56218]
Yep this is a known issue with CCM. Why cisco chose to do this is anyones guess. All the telco's that we work with send Caller ID Name in the ISDN Facility IE. Per Cisco, this can be modified on a per trunk group basis on a DMS-100 switch. None of the Telcos' we use have a DMS-100 so we haven't been able to verify this. Cisco says they will modify CCM to send/receive caller id name in the ISDN Facilty IE, but they haven't committed to a timeframe or version. One of the telco's we use, came up with an alternate method to send a name for Calling Party Name on a per DID Block basis, but in order to do this our H323 Gateways need to use ISDN NI3, which the current Cisco IOS revisions do not support yet. Cisco gave no indication as to if/when they will support NI3. We lose more IP Telephony deals because of stupid features that everyone else's IP Telephony system or traditional key/pbx system has. tm Tim Medley, CCNP+Voice, CCDP, CWNA Sr. Network Architect VoIP Group iReadyWorld ph: 704.943.3615 -Original Message- From: Paul Beckman [mailto:pbeckman@;DeltaHealthGroup.com] Sent: Thursday, October 24, 2002 11:40 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: caller name ID/call manager [7:56218] -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 We have been "working" with Cisco on a problem for about a year now and have determined that we can not get caller name id on our phone because Bellsouth is sending it in the facility ID field. I suspect that we may be helping a Cisco Networking Academy student with homework. ;-) This sounds a lot like the exercises they do. That program has a tendency to teach a bottom-up design methodology that focuses on physcial size and technology/media selection, before gaining an understanding for: business and "political" concerns budget user expectations for reliability, response time, etc. application requirements for bandwidth, delay, etc. appliation behavior in terms of broadcasts, traffic patterns, etc. You all did a good job of pointing out the importantance of these concepts, so I will say no more. I can't remeber the last time I got to play golf. With carpal tunnel and work and sleep and studying theres not much time for golf. I though I was going to play golf on vacation a few months ago. I am assuming that you only have this one service behind the PIX or do you have multiple servers behind the PIX? I would like to see a config of multiple servers behind a PIX - utilizing only "1" external IP address. I know this will work because I running my RealPlayer Helix Universal Streaming Server version 9.0.1 on my Linux box behind a Pix firewall. The linux box has an RFC 1918 address (192.168.1.100) sitting on the DMZ network (192.168.1.254 is IP address of the DMZ interface on the PIX). The 192.168.1.100 is NATed to the public with 199.0.56.293 On the pix firewall: static (inside, dmz) 199.0.56.293 192.168.1.100 access-list 100 permit tcp any host 199.0.56.293 eq 8080 (if http is running on here) access-list 100 permit tcp any host 199.0.56.293 eq 7070 access-list 100 permit udp any host 199.0.56.293 eq 554 access-list 100 permit tcp any host 199.0.56.293 eq 9090 (monitor only) access-group 100 in interface outside Now, since the actual streaming server is behind the Pix firewall, you will have to modify the streaming server configuration file to make it work. Add the following line to the rmserver.cfg file: Restart the streaming server. Now from one of the workstation on the outside Pix firewall, fireup RealPlayer and put the following in the URL: rtsp://199.0.56.293:554/sex.mpg It will work You can make it work from clicking the link in the web browser; however, I don't have to go over it here. RE: MPLS for 2500 [7:53353]
So has anyone actually found an IOS image for a 2500 that supports MPLS? I'd like to learn about MPLS in my home lab. Then the next question is, Do any Cisco routers support VoMPLS, where lines would bring analog or digital voice into voice ports and the router would translate (transcode?) the stream into bits that are encapsulated as the payload of MPLS frames in accord with MPLS Forum Implementation Agreement dated July 27, 2001? I'm not sure about the addressing and other details, but I'd just like to know if cisco routers can do this wihtout the intervention of IP packets. (And approximately what classifying, marking and queueing would the routers use on the PPP links if other traffic such as IP or IPX non-voice data were also present. But that is asking too much at this point. All the information for the Cisco Sales exams are on the Partner E-Learning Site (PEC). There are web based learning courses there covering the sales exams. RE: Voice suggestion needed [7:52936]
1) CIPT is very product specific, relates almost entirely to Cisco Call Manager 2) CVOICE is Cisco VoX; dial-peers, VoIP, VoATM, VoFR, some QoS, some minor VoIP hardware product knowledge. 3) IPTT is all about troubleshooting CIsco IPT products (CCM, Unity, VoIP) 4) DQoS is all QoS, inside and out 5) CuSE and CuSA exams are similar to CIPT, but relate to Unity, also covers MS Exchange, and AD I would start with the exam that covers information you are most familiar with. Most of the Cisco Voice relate exams assume hands on product knowledge, without that hands on knowledge, the exams are 3 or 4 times harder. tm Tim Medley, CCNP+Voice, CCDP, CWNA Sr. Network Architect VoIP Group iReadyWorld -Original Message- From: . . RE: Help, Switching Solution with 4006 [7:51799]
Rik is correct. The SupIII only supports IP routing protocols. To get layer3 IPX in the 4000 you will need to install the 4232 L3 blade and the enhanced IOS image for it. This would not be very clean. Do they really need the IPX? Maybe you can pitch a conversion from IPX to IP while installing the switch. I also notice that you have the 5483 TX GBIC's specked out. Are your cable runs within the distance limitations? When you are talking about running between floors you better have them tested to be sure.
