They can run on the same network but a pair of directly connected switches
must be using the same trunking protocol.

HSRP + ARP Problem [7:73098]

2003-07-28 Thread Tim Champion
Bit of a strange one this. We have 2 7206 routers running HSRP that are
support by our telecoms provider. The fast ethernet interface of each is
connected into our 2950 along with a firewall.

>From the switch, or firewall, I can ping either of the 'real' ip addresses
but not the virtual address. I have used debug arp and seen the arp request
go out for the virtual address (the telco has done the same and see's the
request come in) but there is no reply. If we configure a static arp entry
it all works fine.

Anyone ever experienced anything like this???

Many thanks

Per-destination load balancing [7:72944]

2003-07-24 Thread Tim Champion
Could someone please confirm the following to be true (taken from CCO):

"Per-destination load balancing allows the router to distribute packets
based on the destination address, and uses multiple paths to achieve load
sharing. Packets for a given source-destination host pair are guaranteed to
take the same path, even if multiple paths are available. For example, given
two paths to the same network, all packets for destination1 on that network
go over the first path, all packets for destination2 on that network go over
the second path, and so on. Per-destination load balancing is enabled by
default when you start the router, and is the preferred load balancing for
most situations."

It was my understanding that per-destination load balancing was based on the
destination address only and not on the source/destination pair.

If someone could clarify it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Route Metrics [7:70958]

2003-06-20 Thread Tim Champion
I have a situation whereby I want to perform load balancing across 2 links.
The problem is that the router which will have to perform the load balancing
learns one route via EIGRP and the other from a static route. I know how to
alter the administrative distance of the static route but I'm not sure on
how to tweak the metric. I guess I need to either increase the metric of the
static route of reduce the metric of the EIGRP route.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wow, Chuck, way to suck the life out of the economy and our futures...oh,
wait, that was due to the bubble popping lo all those years ago. For an
assessment of networking futures, let's turn to Lovecraft...(thanks to
www.Cthulhu.org)

"It seemed to be a sort of monster, or symbol representing a monster, of a
form which only a diseased fancy could conceive. If I say that my somewhat
extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a
dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of
the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body
with rudimentary wings; but it was the general outline of the whole which
made it most shockingly frightful. "

We know the pulpy head has been popped...

Sadly, though, I believe that you are right on the money...networking and
its advanced features are becoming more point-button simple. I figure that
we got about 10 years at the most before the bottom truly drops out and
networking becomes as simple and mindless as programming your VCR or
TiVo...you don't need assistance anymore.

As far as for myself, I am currently working on developing my people skills
as I do want to attain senior greeter status...the handing out balloons and
talking is really tripping me up...does anyone want to form a study group
with me to study that?

Folks,

I have a problem in my work where for some strange reason I cant access my
email over the internet from a hotel. The reason for me not being able to
access email is because, oddly enough, the hotel uses NAT. We use
checkpoint firewalls and I use securemote software. Now I believe its
something to
do with the secure ID token that I use and when I type this in there is some
form of checksum which is checked at the server end. This of course has
changed due to the Nat going on.

has anybody out there experience this as well and know what the simple
solution is. I'm sure there is a simple solution and its just my company
politics which is causing me the problems.

Any help will be much appreciated.

RE: 10/100/1000 Switch? [7:66851]

2003-04-06 Thread Tim O'Brien
Larry,

There are a couple of new 10/100/1000 blades coming out for the 6500. The
"module for value" version runs directly off of the 32gig backplane. There
is also a higher speed version that requires the 256gig backplane.

"48-port 10/100/1000 Ethernet module for value--oriented wiring closets-This
module utilizes the Catalyst 6500 32 Gbps backplane. A single Cisco Catalyst
6500 chassis can cost-effectively support 48 to 576 10/100/1000 ports using
any generation of Cisco Catalyst 6500 supervisor engine. It also features
TDR and will offer a field-upgradeable IEEE 802.3af standards based in-line
power daughter card"

The new 48 port 10/100/1000 module will require a new SUP720 or sup-3 as
some are calling it.. It may also require a SFM module. The sup 3 will
require a new fan tray and I believe power supplies...

The info is a little sketchy at this time, but that is what we have
heard..thats a lot of upgrading for 48 gig ports..and most servers cant
really fill a 100FD pipe anyway...

Re: so how does IGRP unequal load-balancing work anyway? [7:66667]

2003-04-02 Thread Tim Champion
I can't remember the exact terminology but an IGRP router is aware of a
neighbors metric to a destination as well as its own metric to the same
destination. The router will only consider routes to be valid if the
upstream router's metric to the destination is lower than its own metric to
the same destination. This prevents the problems you mentioned below. You
may want to get a second opinion on this!

IGRP Metric calculation [7:66062]

2003-03-25 Thread Tim Champion
When calculating the metric of an IGRP route (with non-default 'K' values)
which load and reliability values does one use? Do you use the highest,
lowest or average value for the entire route?

Also if anyone could point me to a document on the above it would be
appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

2511 Reverse Telnet [7:65819]

2003-03-20 Thread Tim Champion
Help please! I have just bought a 2511 and am attempting to use it for
reverse telnet. I have connected each of the octal cable RJ-45 cables into a
console port. I initiate a reverse telnet session and can recieve data, i.e.
when I power on the target router I recieve boot loader etc messages up
until "press return to start". The problem is I can't send anything,
pressing return doesn't work.

I am reseanably confident that I have entered all the right commands. Can
anyone shed any light on this?

Many thanks in advance.

Team,
I got this from a friend but I not sure if you have seen this or not but
only someone pursuing the CCIE would laugh at it!! In the course of my
day-to-day work, people ask me what is a CCIE? I thought about this for some
time. I wrote some notes. And this is what I came up
with:
I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling 8 foot computer racks and charming
magnetic security cardswipes. I have been known to remodel SME networks on
my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of capital
deployment, reliability and performance. I translate technobabble for
Management, I write award-winning technical presentations and deliver them
better than an American president announcing tax cuts. I can recite complete
chapters of the Cisco Documentation CD, backwards and, with little effort
and at the same time, perform decimal to binary conversion for very large
numbers. I woo women with my sensuous and godlike MIDI playing on a
notebook. I can pilot computer trolleys up severe inclines with unflagging
speed, and I can rack Cisco gear faster than Arnold Schwarznegger can bench
press. I am an expert in network diagramming tools, a veteran in web
surfing, and know the Cisco Web Site better than I know my own family. Just
to keep it interesting, I occasionally tread water for three days while
programming Cisco practice labs. I manage time efficiently and can complete
a timesheet every week. In addition, I know the part number for every Cisco
router cable. Using only a Chinese AC power cord and a large glass of water,
I once single-handedly rebuilt the network core of major co-location
facility after the roof fell in. I used to play games, but now it's serious.
I am the subject of numerous urban myths and I am the creator of a few as
well. When I'm bored, I test fiber optic cable, calculate power loss sums on
UTP and the minimum refraction index for 50 micron multimode fiber. I mean,
what IS the point of it ? I understand that DLSW and Source Route
Translational Bridging actually has a reason for existence. It's not just
IBM playing a practical joke. Really. I enjoy urban guerilla activities. I
can build a 802.11b parabolic dish antennae using surplus antennae from
defunct satellite companies and a juice can. It has better performance than
off the shelf products. I think that having a wind generator and solar array
as power backup for my practice lab is not only responsible preparation,
it's environmentally friendly too. On Wednesdays, after work, I repair old
monitors free of charge for my local charity. I know that canonical to
non-canonical conversion is not about religion, it's about "ART." Microsoft
geeks worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear, which
I don't understand -- it was supposed to be funny. I don't perspire. I am a
private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller number ten and
have won the cash jackpot. I can speak IPX NLSP, AppleTalk, ATM PVC, QoS,
and BGP to name a few, and redistribute routes at will, with filtering,
using non contiguous masks. I install IPV6 on customer sites whenever I can,
just so I can play with it. Same for OSPF NSSA. Children trust me. I can
hurl squishy giveaway tradeshow toys at sales personnel with stunning
accuracy, and ensure that the dweeb from administration gets the blame. I
have charisma beyond normal mortals; if I didn't the boss would have sent
the other guy to this exam. I once read Cisco Quality of Service, Caslow
Bridges and Routers 2nd Ed, and Jeff Doyles' Routing TCP/IP Vol2 in one day,
and still had time to do practice on a Frame Relay multipoint network, using
OSPF and IGRP, split horizon, route maps and ISDN. I know the exact location
of every food item in the supermarket and I use a link state protocol to
calculate the shortest path to get there. I have performed several covert
operations with the CIA. It was kind of fun having them follow me around. I
know that security and privacy is a phantasm-like myth created by "security
companies" to extract money from IT Managers who can't implement a decent
security policy. But it's great fun to play with. I sleep once a week; when
I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. I know exactly how much coffee my body will
take to sustain me at peak function. While on vacation, I successfully
negotiated with the hotel to fix their network in return for free
accommodation. The laws of society do not apply to me. I bal

Well here is a question for the group in general:

Would you think that a combination of a CCNP study group and a CCIE Written

CCIE) be beneficial to everyone involved? Or would the focus be completely
different?

need to config something like PIM, IGMP and CGMP on my cat's and routers to

OT: 6509 w/2 SUP2/MSFC2 and FlexWAN [7:56774]

2002-11-03 Thread Tim O'Brien
Hello,

I am working on a high availability solution for a single 6509. The
customer currently has a 6509 with dual SUP 2's and dual MSFC2/PFC2's.
This box also has a FlexWAN module and I am having some difficulty
locating any useful information on Cisco's new site about setting this
up with some high availability or redundancy. When I configure the
MSFC's like normal with HSRP on all of the VLAN interfaces only the MSFC
in the active SUP can see the FlexWAN module and serial ports. They do
not even show up on the second MSFC. Is there a "Ciscoized" way to set
this up?

Thanks for any help!

RE: caller name ID/call manager [7:56218]

2002-10-25 Thread Tim Medley
Yep this is a known issue with CCM. Why cisco chose to do this is
anyones guess. All the telco's that we work with send Caller ID Name in
the ISDN Facility IE.

Per Cisco, this can be modified on a per trunk group basis on a DMS-100
switch. None of the Telcos' we use have a DMS-100 so we haven't been
able to verify this. Cisco says they will modify CCM to send/receive
caller id name in the ISDN Facilty IE, but they haven't committed to a
timeframe or version.

One of the telco's we use, came up with an alternate method to send a
name for Calling Party Name on a per DID Block basis, but in order to do
this our H323 Gateways need to use ISDN NI3, which the current Cisco IOS
revisions do not support yet. Cisco gave no indication as to if/when
they will support NI3.

We lose more IP Telephony deals because of stupid features that everyone
else's IP Telephony system or traditional key/pbx system has.

We have been "working" with Cisco on a problem for about a year now

because Bellsouth is sending it in the facility ID field. Cisco call
manager will only look at the display IE field. We have also
checked with two other carriers and they also deliver it in the
facility ID field.

My question is... does anyone get caller name ID on their phones
from external callers? And if so what carrier do you use and what
kind of switch is it being brought in on?

OT: FS IBM SX GBIC's work fine with Cisco 3500 series switches [7:54929]

I have a bunch of IBM SX GBIC's for sale i anyone is interested for use in
your labs. I have tested these in several 3500 XL series switches as well as
in a 6500 and they work fine.

Selling them for $25 each plus shipping. Simple inexpensive way to use Gig E
in your home lab.

I do not believe that these are on the approved Cisco third party GBIC list,
so I wouldn't use them on a production network.

I would suggest that "input errors" is a general counter for all input

so that's what that does, and that explains why cisco works is always using

Call Manager Domain. [7:54221]

2002-09-26 Thread Neal, Tim

All,

I'm currently running subscribe/publisher call managers happily on a 10.138
network. To access the Active Directory for web logons etc to IP phones we
need to add the two call managers to our local domain...Seems simple enough,
but are there any issues or possible problems I'm not aware of by doing this
???

please advise.

thx
Tim

She's obsessed with money. My wife is also psychic. I was out to lunch a
few weeks back at a sandwich shop with a bunch of guys from the office.
I had just sat down to eat and my wife calls on the cell phone and
started yelling at me for spending money at lunch. I hadn't even begun
to eat my sandwich.

My wife also doesn't like to front money for my employer, they should
prepay for an exam (or other expenses) on the company credit card. I
really don't mind. I've been in worse situations. At a previous job I
traveled A LOT, and it took forever to get my employ

er to cut an expense
check. Fortunately my current employer pays expenses on time.

I guess now I know why my employer will only pay for an exam twice.

Thank-you very much for the recommendations for Top-Down Network Design. I
probably don't express my gratitude often enough to the many people who
bought the book.

I suspect that we may be helping a Cisco Networking Academy student with
homework. ;-) This sounds a lot like the exercises they do. That program has
a tendency to teach a bottom-up design methodology that focuses on physcial
size and technology/media selection, before gaining an understanding for:

business and "political" concerns
budget
user expectations for reliability, response time, etc.
application requirements for bandwidth, delay, etc.
appliation behavior in terms of broadcasts, traffic patterns, etc.

You all did a good job of pointing out the importantance of these concepts,
so I will say no more.

Priscilla

Fortuneatley, we don't have a policy yet that requires us to stay after we

I have been dating for 11 years now, yes .. with the same girl :)
Would seem like a marriage dont you think ?

BUt i guess it's the same everywhere, that you have to sign a paper that you
don't leave after getting a certificate. They mostly wanna kaap you a year
or more, depends on the contract. Leave within that period off time ? Bring
out the cash and start paying for the cost they had for putting you through
certification.

heheh...you now know the difference between dating and marriage! Where I
work, we have a trade agreement with a testing facility, so I get cisco
boots and tests for free. Not only do I not have to pay first then get
reimbursed. But even though I'm missing work, I still get my 40 hours
paycheck when I'm at the boot. Sounds like a win/win situation, right?
Wrong, my wife complains because I have to sign an agreement that says I
won't get the cert and then quit. She think they should shell out 10k for it
all and that I should just be able to leave the next day.

If you are serious about designing this netwoek and designing ir correctly
for scalability and functionality, pick up a good network design book.

My reccomendation is Top Down Network Design, by Priscilla Openheimer. U
have two copies one at home and one at the office, I refer to this tome
quite often. Great book, excellent methodology.

If i have to design network for 3 storey on a building. There are around
200-300 workstations in 2 storey each. Is it advisable to use Ethernet to
link them up. As for the other storey it is for admin purpose. The distance
is around 150m between the further storey. However it is possible to put a
switch/router at the middle for interconnect.

Cheers,

You need a standard cisco console cable and a cisco db25 adaptor (rj45 to

I just acquired a 4000 router and can't get it to respond through the
console port. As usual in this case, I suspect I have a cable problem. I
thought I needed a straight through DB9-DB25 modem cable, but it doesn't
seem to work. I want to make sure I have the right cable before I start
chasing other possibilities. Is this in fact the right cable? I have
searched the archives and looked at several CCO links without a clear answer
(maybe I'm just not smart enough to understand what I'm reading :-)). What
I'd really like is something ultra-simple, like "db-25 pin2 to db-9 pin3"
and so on. Can anyone point that out to me? TIA.

RE: How to make real player from outside to contact real [7:53617]

2002-09-19 Thread LeBrun, Tim

I am assuming that you only have this one service behind the PIX or do you
have multiple servers behind the PIX? I would like to see a config of
multiple servers behind a PIX - utilizing only "1" external IP address.

[7:53586]

Ok, the solution is very simple one. I know this will work because I
running my
RealPlayer Helix Universal Streaming Server version 9.0.1 on my Linux box
behind
a Pix firewall. The linux box has an RFC 1918 address (192.168.1.100)
sitting on
the DMZ network (192.168.1.254 is IP address of the DMZ interface on the
PIX).
The 192.168.1.100 is NATed to the public with 199.0.56.293
On the pix firewall:
static (inside,dmz) 199.0.56.293 192.168.1.100
access-list 100 permit tcp any host 199.0.56.293 eq 8080 (if http is running
on here)
access-list 100 permit tcp any host 199.0.56.293 eq 7070
access-list 100 permit udp any host 199.0.56.293 eq 554

access-list 100 permit tcp any host 199.0.56.293 eq 9090 (monitor only)

access-group 100 in interface outside

Now, since the actual streaming server is behind the Pix firewall, you will
have to

modify the streaming server configuration file to make it work. Add the
following

line to the rmserver.cfg file:

Restart the streaming server. Now from one of the workstation on the
outside Pix

firewall, fireup RealPlayer and put the following in the URL:

rtsp://199.0.56.293:554/sex.mpg

It will work You can make it work from clicking the link in the web
browser;

however, I don't have to go over it here.

Enjoy

Now, this is something a CCIE doesn't know how to fix.

If I understand this correctly, cisco routers support this RFC 3032 feature.
Then the next question is, Do any Cisco routers support VoMPLS, where lines
would bring analog or digital voice into voice ports and the router would
translate (transcode?) the stream into bits that are encapsulated as the
payload of MPLS frames in accord with MPLS Forum Implementation Agreement
dated
July 27, 2001? I'm not sure about the addressing and other details, but I'd
just like to know if cisco routers can do this wihtout the intervention of IP
packets. (And approximately what classifying, marking and queueing would the
routers use on the PPP links if other traffic such as IP or IPX non-voice
data
were also present. But that is asking too much at this point. Maybe later.)

All the information for the Cisco Sales exams are on the Partner

If you don't have access to PEC, then you probabally do not need to take

RE: Voice suggestion needed [7:52936]

2002-09-09 Thread Tim Medley

1) CIPT is very product specific, relates almost entirely to Cisco Call
Manager
2) CVOICE is Cisco VoX; dial-peers, VoIP, VoATM, VoFR, some QoS, some minor
VoIP hardware product knowledge.
3) IPTT is all about troubleshooting CIsco IPT products (CCM, Unity, VoIP)
4) DQoS is all QoS, inside and out
5) CuSE and CuSA exams are similar to CIPT, but relate to Unity, also covers
MS Exchange, and AD

I would start with the exam that covers information you are most familiar
with. Most of the Cisco Voice relate exams assume hands on product
knowledge, without that hands on knowledge, the exams are 3 or 4 times harder.

hi group

To a person that does not have much voice background, which is a better
course to take, the CIPT or CVoice? I need to write the several Voice
Specialization test eventually. And how about the unity course? is that any
good?

At Networkers San Diego this year, during the CCIE power session, they said
gave us maybe 2 pages in the hand outs covering voice on the lab. Know
everything listed on the blue print for voice and you'll be fine.

Does anyone know the level to at which voice is tested to on the routing and
swithing lab exam
I have purchased some fxs cards and can do so much.. But what about call
manager, fxo connections, gatekeeper,.etc

Or is this detailed level reseved for the voice specialisation exam

The web site still only seems to state that voice technology will account
for a small apart..
Just wondering of the level of detail that one needs to go into..

not asking anyone to break
NDA, nor would I expect you, (I wanna do this on my own). but how
much is expected of you for this aspect..

Any help appreciated

Hardware issues w/ 4000-M [7:52764]

2002-09-05 Thread Tim Medley

Anyone run into this before?

I pulled a couple 4000's (I believe they are 4000-M's, definately not
regular 4000's, and they don't appear to be 4500 or 4700's), out of a
storage closet.

When I boot up the first one I get the following,

System Bootstrap, Version 4.6(1), SOFTWARE
Copyright (c) 1986-1992 by cisco Systems
bus error not generated on main memory parity error
location 0xfc, phase 0, subtest 0, test: write
  written 0x0, read 0x0 ... aborting
failed main memory parity test ... aborting

I've replaced the dram simm with a known good one and I still get the error.
I have swapped out the flash, the shared memory chip, and the roms with no
luck. I even tried without shared mem and flash.

When I boot the second one I get the following,

System Bootstrap, Version 4.6(1), SOFTWARE
Copyright (c) 1986-1992 by cisco Systems

Bad memory at location 0x0010: wrote 0x0010, read 0x0FF0

Same thing, I've swapped all the memory, roms, etc, with no change.

Are both of these boards toast? I've looked at all the jumper locations and
compared them to whats on CCO and everything looks kosher.

Anyone run into this beofre or have any other ideas? Or should I just use
these as paperweights.

thanks,

however, only in a lab do I want to have a router with one PC communicate to
another router with the other PC via a serial connection.(want to simulate a
network using routers) I would like the PCs to be able to send text
messages to each other. What can I do? Thanks for any help.

RE: Security Policy [7:52061]

I'd be interested in something like this too, to use as a template.

Perhaps someone has a generic dummy security policy from a class or
something they can share.

Hi All,

does any one have a copy of a security policy (like a corporate security
outline for the company) that they are willing to share, so I can create
one
using that as a template/guide ?

Thanks all

RE: 2610 VPN with 3DES [7:52124]

2002-08-27 Thread Tim O'Brien

I would probably look at 12.1.16. It is GD and should be stable. IP Plus
IPSec 3DES only requires 8 and 40 so you should be fine. If you are feeling
brave you could load up 12.2.10b.. :)

Subject: 2610 VPN with 3DES [7:52124]

Folks, I am in need of a quick help.
I have 2610 doing 3DES for site-to-site VPN. It creates a tunnel
successfully, but it crashes and gives me an error messgage below.
*** System received a SIGTRAP exception ***
signal= 0x5, code= 0xd00, context= 0x81640a98
PC = 0x80db4414, Vector = 0xd00, SP = 0x81cfb1f0
*** Unexpected Console FIFO timeout interrupt ***
PC = 0xfff03fc4, Vector = 0x500, SP = 0x81641ca4

The IOS is C2600 Software (C2600-IK2S-M), Version 12.0(7)XK1, EARLY
DEPLOYMENT RELEASE
I have 16MB flash and 48mb Dram.
I am suspecting this is a bug within the IOS.
If so, can someone tell me what the most bug-free IOS(3DES) is?
Thanks

RE: Help, Switching Solution with 4006 [7:51799]

2002-08-21 Thread Tim O'Brien

Rik is correct. The SupIII only supports IP routing protocols. To get layer3
IPX in the 4000 you will need to install the 4232 L3 blade and the enhanced
IOS image for it. This would not be very clean. Do they really need the IPX?
Maybe you can pitch a conversion from IPX to IP while installing the switch.
I also notice that you have the 5483 TX GBIC's specked out. Are your cable
runs within the distance limitations? When you are talking about running
between floors you better have them tested to be sure.

Subject: Help, Switching Solution with 4006 [7:51799]

Hi,

I am proposing the following LAN solution to a customer. Does it make
sense?

-WS-C4006-S3(sup III engine)
Do I need special licenses for this? The customer will be using IP and IPX.
I saw some licensing software for the Sup III that was around $1700 for both
IP and IPX. I don't know that that is all about.

-One 48 port RJ45 blade for servers and workstations on same floor

-One 6 port GBIC blade (WS-X4306-GB) that will be used to connect to five
WS-2950s on different floors

-I will use the WS-5483 GBICs to connect the 2950s to the six port
WS-X4306-GB

Can anyone think of things I haven't considered?

Thanks
Wayne
