Heard there's a new requirement between the CCIE written and lab.
One now has to sing the following song on a street corner on
Tasman Drive. Passing score is 740.

Hi there,

Currently I'm studing for the new revised 100 question

I think this book is fine for CCNP, but not for a CCIE written test.
I would like to buy other material, what are your suggestions?

With kind regard,

Jorg.

You really should read all the BluePrint.

I would recommend the books Practical Studies, by Solie, and All-in-One
Cisco(r) CCIE(tm) Lab Study Guide, by Stephen Hutnik, Michael Satterlee.
I specially appreciate the correction of Satterlee labs.

Has anyone taken the new format of the written test? I just got my head
handed to me. Needed a 58 to pass and got a 47. I definitely studied the
wrong material. I thought the test would emphasize OSPF, BGP, WAN and the
basic Routing Protocol interaction. Boy was I wrong. 75% of the test was
Multicast, IPX, Token Ring and QoS. I studied QoS pretty well, but slacked
a bit on Multicast and totally wrote off Token Ring or IPX. Ooops$300
down the drain. Anyone else have a similiar experience? As far as what I
used, I thought the official CCIE RS Exam Cert. Guide would be enough.
Uhh, that's a big NO! Bruno and clan don't even cover half of what was on
this test. Anyone else recommend something different for next time?
Should
I just say No to all books and print out all the links on the Exam
blueprint
page? I think that's what I'm going to do this time, oh, that and
concentrate on useless protocols.

RE: Blown Away By The New CCIE Written [7:62396]

2003-02-04 Thread Alan Cowan
I had a similar experience (with a 44) and also under-estimated the
exam. I found, however, that I did use the correct study material, just
not enough time spent on learning worthless information, which you need
to do. I am not very good with memory learning and prefer something
where logic is involved... Unfortunately I found that most of the CCIE
written questions require at least some memory work, which is where I
got stuck. I did not see too much TR, but lots of MPLS, BGP, Bridging,
Multicasting and lots of questions from the web links.

Good luck with your second try. I don't think that many of us are
getting through on the first try Or are we just stupid???

I used:
Doyle 1 2
Caslow
MPLS and VPN architectures
Halabi - Internet routing architectures
Boson tests 1 and 3
Cisco web
I also referred to a few of my CCNP books, but not in great detail.

Re: Blown Away By The New CCIE Written [7:62396]

2003-02-04 Thread Dennis Laganiere
The Bruno book is just a place to start. It will at least give you an
introduction to each of the topics...

I would recommend reading both of Doyle's Routing TCP/IP books, Sam Halabi's
Internet Routing Architectures, Caslow's Cisco Certification, as well as a
good MPLS book.

I'm the author of one of the Boson exams for this test (which means I have a
bit of an agenda), so I think those are useful too...

I also put together a fairly basic study guide for this exam that you can
download from www.cramsession.com (but you have to really look around to
find the free version)...

Lastly, I put together a bunch of free material at www.laganiere.net

I hope that helps give you a place to start getting ready for a second
attempt. As hard as the qualifying exam is, trust me, the lab is much
worse...

RE: Blown Away By The New CCIE Written [7:62396]

2003-02-04 Thread Logan, Harold
Todd, here's something that may help a little... Bill Parkhurst's take on
the IE Written at Networkers last year was something to the tune of, The
purpose of the written exam is to test things that we simply can't test on
the lab.

Just think of the written as a box that you have to check before you can
take the lab. Studying for the written is NOT the same as studying for the
lab... the two are totally different animals.

Incidentally, I noticed Dennis Laganiere also replied to this thread. I
downloaded the Boson test he wrote the day of my lab, and it was a great
help. Assuming that it's been updated for the new test, I highly recommend
that you use it to test yourself maybe a day or two before your next attempt.

Good luck,

maybe.. but I too would like to know exactly how much focus the exam has on
Token Ring and bridging (srb, rsrt, rsrb) and atm.. I do not think that
violates the nda... now if you gave an example of a question - that would
probably violate the nda.

How about Token Ring and IPX. Is there as much emphasis on the RIF and etc
as there used to be. Also- how much VoIP and MPLS should we know.

Re: RE: Re: Fw: New CCIE Written Exam [7:57341]

2002-11-14 Thread B.J. Wilson
You're right about giving an example of a question, but wouldn't the test's
emphasis on one topic or another depend on what questions the candidate
receives from the test engine? The only safe way to answer our (admittedly
universal) curiosity is to visit these two CCO pages:

R/S Exam Blueprint:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/learning/le3/learning_ccie_exam_blueprint09186a00800b4c95.html

What's New:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/ccie_program/whatsnew.html

According to the latter, all things Token Ring are gone, save for DLSW+.

New CCIE Written Exam [7:57341]

2002-11-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dear All,

I would really appreciate if anyone would share their thoughts or experience
on the new CCIE written exam preparation.

Without breaking the NDA, would some also comment on the following:

- does the Cisco CCIE RS Exam Certification guide cover all the topics in
new exam?
- would the Boson tests still be recommended
- In a nutshell what materials could be useful for the exam beside CCO ?

Regards,

Arman

Definitely not. And it is really necessary to study the topics in this book
using other books too.

I do not have the answer for the Boson test.

If you allow me, I would like to put one more question in this subject:

- Does anyone could say if after November 4th there are not (really not)
questions about Token Ring and IPX?

on the new CCIE written exam preparation.

Without breaking the NDA, would some also comment on the following:

- does the Cisco CCIE RS Exam Certification guide cover all the topics in
new exam?
- would the Boson tests still be recommended
- In a nutshell what materials could be useful for the exam beside CCO ?

Regards,

Arman

I passed last month, so here's what I think...
 - does the Cisco CCIE RS Exam Certification guide cover all the topics in
 new exam?
Bruno's book is a good review, but it's fairly superficial. Buy it, read
it, but suppliment it with long tours of the Cisco Website. I think you'll
have better luck with your searches if you use the classic website.
 - would the Boson tests still be recommended
I found bosons #1 and #3 very useful; #3 was the best. #2 was too basic.

 - In a nutshell what materials could be useful for the exam beside CCO ?

Doyle's TCP/IP books, Caslow, the Cisco press switching and MPLS books, and
Halabi.

I hope that helps. This is one heck of a test, so good luck.

three hours and 150 questions. One of the boson had enough questions to have
150 in each of the four quizes and a timer, so I was use to the pace - but
it's brutal. I could go back and review questions, and they did say how
many valid answers there were on the multi-answers.
This was a really hard test, make sure you know everything.
lawrence sculark wrote:is it 100 or 150 questions?

cisco's website states the following:
The written and lab exams test different types of knowledge. The written
exam is a 2 hour multiple choice computer based exam (3 hours, 150 questions
for Routing and Switching).

New CCIE Lab Policy?? Why?? [7:55019]

2002-10-07 Thread Cisco Nuts

Hello, Has anyone noticed the new CCIE Lab policy on this Cisco's new
jazzy web-site? They have stated that: Candidates must attempt the CCIE
Lab exam within one year of passing the CCIE Qualification exam. It was
set to 18 months as of last week. I had planned to schedule my lab for
the last day of the 18 month period, just looking for any open slots
anywhere. My question is: What happens to candidates like me that have
not scheduled and it's been over a year since I took my written exam? Am
I pretty much scr@!$...?? If so, this is bad, real bad!! Can any one ask
Cisco if this applies to candidates after Oct. 5th or to everyone else??
Anyone
else have any other ideas?? Thank you. Sincerely.

Hello,

Now I am even more confused:

Based on the link that Dennis put out:

It pulls up the previous Cisco web-page which states on the CCIE Lab policy

3.Written Exam Expiry

Candidates must attempt the CCIE Lab exam within 18 months of passing the

OK, Did Cisco's web master/programmer just do a copy and paste the original

one as put up on www.cisco.com/cco.shtml??

Cisco, any comments??

Bottomline: Are candidates like me then still safe?? (I would like to be

Thank you.

Yes, I just took (today in fact) the R/S written and it was a nightmare. I
know that I can't speak for all recent test takers as I am sure all of our
exams are somewhat different, however, I can tell you one key thing based
off of the exam that I took:

KNOW MULTICASTING AND MPLS!!

Be prepared to FULLY understand concepts, fundamentals, designs, best
practices, troubleshooting regarding multicasting topics such as IGMP (v1
v2 and their differences), CGMP, DVMRP, PIM (PIM-DM PIM-SM) as well as
MPLS architectures and implementation. I would say that close to 1/3 of my
exam was on multicasting and MPLS alone. I thought that I had the wrong
test as most exam study guides seem to show very little emphasis on these
areas. I studied my ass off (6 months prep) for this as my current CCNP
certification runs out next year and I want to get the big upgrade.
Anyway, I read (cover to cover) these books in preparation for taking the
CCIE R/S written:

McGraw Hill All-In-One CCIE Lab Study Guide
Cisco Press Internet Routing Architectures
Cisco Press CCIE Professional Development: Routing TCP/IP Volume I
Cisco Press CCIE Professional Development: Routing TCP/IP Volume II
Cisco Press CCIE Professional Development: Cisco LAN Switching
Cisco Press CCIE Practical Studies Volume I
Cisco Press Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide
Addison-Wesley Interconnections Second Ed (Perlman)
Various RFCs and a sh*load of configuration documents from Cisco's website

With the exception of Jeff Doyle in Routing TCP/IP Volume II, none of the
CCIE development or study guides provide much information on these areas.
This is where I got destroyed on the test. I put most of my focus on areas
such as routing protocols (EGPs IGPs), wireless networks, LANs/WANs
(switching routing), QOS, access-lists, traffic management... (you get the
idea). Don't be fooled by the amount of focus on multicasting or MPLS that
you see in some of these books on the market (such as the list above).
Before taking this test, I should have read (until I was blue in the face)
Cisco Press MPLS VPN Architectures and Interdomain Multicast Solutions
Guide. You can really see Cisco emphasizing the AVVID architecture in this
certification. I was praying for questions on issues such as wireless LANs,
ISDN, BGP or ATM because it was what I had studied and practiced
(extensively) on in my home lab (not to mention paid for); but they never
came (I didn't get one single question on OSPF or EIGRP on the whole damn
exam). I drove me nuts and to add insult to injury, they used every acronym
in the book regarding these multicasting technologies.

Anyway my suggestion is, and this just based on my experience with the test
today and may not reflect all other test takers, study and be well prepared
to address complex issues regarding MPLS, multicasting, and multiservice. I
am scheduling the test again in a month or so as this will give me some time
to improve on these areas. Good luck!

Jim

together a virtual study group (or if there is one already out there, can
join in)? It seems like a group effort might be what it takes to get things
moving again.

Even the newest book from cisco press does not appear to have

It does not even mention the QoS stuff which is a major section

at the contents for the switching does not even cover what is
refered to as SECURITY in the blueprint. It also does not
cover what is refered to as mutliservies other than MPLS.

This is really bad when the most current book that is supose to
cover this test does not even cover the blueprint.

Guess my plan is to back reread the chapters in the doyle books
to try to get 100% on the routing to make up for all the stuff that is
hard to get doc on. Then it a matter of tring to figure out
which cisco things to read. I at least have a clue since I paid them
my $300 for my education.

There is one field on the test results called pratical that does
not have a coresponding entry in the blueprint not sure what that is.

Make sure you look at least look at all the stuff that is on the blueprint
and try to find sample configs so you know what they look

RE: Anybody passed New CCIE R/S Qualification Exam [7:52862]

2002-09-11 Thread Raj Santiago

Hi all

I failed the new CCIE written exam too. I was close, 68%, but that#8217;s
just not enough. Here are some points about the exam that you should know :

* The test thoroughly tests your theory. You really need to know it. To be
more precise, someone at work should be able to come to you, and ask
questions about the protocol(eg why, how etc) and you should be able to
answer it.

*there are no short cuts, no one book wonders. I learnt this the hard way.
Use CCO, Doyle, caslow etc to thoroughly delve deep into the protocols and
how they operate. Remember CCO is your friend, everything tested in the exam
is really all there. Books by Doyle, Calsow etc make it easier to understand.

*Please remember, its NOT like CCNP. Its vastly different, much more
difficult. I have done CCNA and CCNP foundation etc...this is a different
beast. Its good in a way, I have learnt much more about the protocols now. I
think Cisco have done some good in making it tougher.

*Boson does help. They help you recall the subject matter and ensure new
information has actually been understood. Remember you cant just do boson
and then expect to pass(eg CCNA...). Its a complementary tool. Boson #1 and
#3 are the ones to go for.

Good luck to everyone, please remember, its not impossible...

Re: Anybody passed New CCIE R/S Qualification Exam? [7:52862]

2002-09-11 Thread Jim

I don't want to generate any more threads for this topic, but I did want to
clarify my previous post regarding the CCIE R/S qualification exam. While
in MY recent exposure with the exam (again I emphasize that I don't speak
for everyone), there was a large emphasis on multicasting and multiservice
applications, it is still important to focus on ALL areas of the CCIE
blueprint as each candidate's experience with the exam will be different.
The point is there is no main topic that you should review in preparation
for this test as you should dedicated your focus EQUALLY to all areas of the
exam blueprint. My previous post was stating that I made the mistake of
thinking that knowledge of multicast and MPLS was not as important as
say...BGP or ATM primarily because many (not all) of the latest and greatest
CCIE development guides tend to dedicate only a couple of paragraphs to
these technologies whereas say BGP gets a 200 page chapter. Research and
study ALL areas of the exam blueprint and don't cross your fingers in
hopes of getting more questions in one technology and less in another.

Just my advice...

Regards,
Jim

New CCIE written exam. [7:53005]

2002-09-10 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

Took the new version of CCIE written exam. The exam consists of 180 min
and 150 questions. The passing score is 105. But my score was only 67.
:-(

Lot of questions in IS-IS, Mcast and QoS. Lot of scenario based
questions as well. Most of them were choose the best answer only a
few were multiple choice questions and they specify how many are the
best answers.

2 questions were on PVLANs, None in WLAN, couple of them in TR, Enet and
FDDI stuff.

Before taking the test, there is a small survey to be taken online.
One of the questions in the survey is you need to select the
technologies that you have worked on. I suspect most of the questions
are based on the technology that you selected. Time shouldn't be a
problem because you have more than a minute for a question You still
can revisit marked questions at the end of the test.

All the best for everybody who is right now preparing for this and if
you need more specifics about the exam, email me - I will try to answer
to the best I can that I have from my memory.

Thanks,
rajesh

all that stuff in it. If you look at the blueprint you will find
things that are only in the 12.1 code levels.

Even the newest book from cisco press does not appear to have
everything when you compare the blueprint and the contents.

It does not even mention the QoS stuff which is a major section
in the blueprint and even the sample chapter they let you look
at the contents for the switching does not even cover what is
refered to as SECURITY in the blueprint.

Make sure you look at least look at all the stuff that is on the blueprint
and try to find sample configs so you know what they look
like.

Just to be the first to jump In, but DON'T post the questions on this list.
This list is monitored by Cisco and rest assured that if you post a question

I for one didn't have any help from knowing what was on the test, and
neither did most people who have passed it. You need to learn the material,
not just regurgitate answers that you have memorized.

you could open up a focus on a particular area that we all could hit on as a

me feel sorry for all those guys that have to re-certify the CCIE. hehe ya

Re: Anybody passed New CCIE R/S Qualification Exam? [7:52862]

2002-09-10 Thread Jim

Good luck!

Regards,
Jim

Re: New CCIE written [7:52717]

2002-09-05 Thread Dennis Laganiere

If you take a quick look in the group archives at www.groupstudy.com you'll
find several months worth of comments about it, but basically they dropped a
few older technologies, added a bunch of new ones, upped the number of
questions, and ratcheted up the level of the questions. It's much harder,
but I think it's more relevant and does a better job of getting you ready
for the lab.

I wrote a free study guide for the exam last month that is posted at
www.cramsession.com, and I have a bunch of free documents I put together at
www.laganiere.net that you might find useful. I hope that helps...

Hi all,
I actually sat for the beta of this exam and failed by one percent The
exam was a monster BUT it was very good and very well written. I have read
this CCIE Study guide during Networkers and it is kinda overview of all key
topics, period! No one book should and can cover this exam fully for a time
being. The only solution is to STUDY STUDY and STUDY. That what i summarized
when i sat for this exam. The only shortcut is if somebody break the NDA and
submit all questions to u and u go there and pass it. The questions are from
large variety of techs and NEW techologies plus in great depth. Like u
should know IP QoS and Multicasting around the same level as u were
preparing for CCIP. Also I passed the old wriiten yesterday with 78% but I
studied for only one night (Dennis book) plus i am no cisco guru @ all. This
simply tells u the difference between the two exams. I went through the
Cisco press book but its OK as a review. The best place is CCO for the new
beast. TRUST ME!! Consult all the links thoroughly which r given in the blue
print and u MIGHT survive.

FW: New CCIE Written Exam [7:50946]

2002-08-08 Thread Dennis Laganiere

It's a weird time right now because there isn't much out there yet. Your
right that I updated the free cramsession.com study guide; I've also updated
Boson #3 and I've got a new practice test coming out on Quizware.com in the
next few days. I'm sure everybody else is updating their stuff as well. In
a few months there should be lots of stuff, but right now you're caught in a
transition.

I'm up to my neck in this stuff because I've been updating all my materials
over the last few months, and that's going to continue for a while as I
continue to grow the question databases. If there are a number of people
getting ready for the new exam, we should start doing something together;
either here on groupstudy, at @!#$.com or off-line. I've been doing a
lot of work with my router pod recently to create troubleshooting and
configuration questions, and would be glad to help out.

Let me know if I can help...

I know that CCxx Productions will have their new guide out in about a month.
Other than that, I don't know if there are other guides that are available

Right now, your best bet is to print out the blueprint and start going

Well, Cisco wrote me back and they said that any CCIE Written 350-001
exams taken on August 7th or after will be the new exam, regardless of
when you registered. So, if any of you who registered for the exam before
August 7th to take the exam after August 7th thinking that you were going
to take the current exam, you better re-schedule, just to be safe.

Regarding re-scheduling, remember that you can't retake an exam unless a
minimum of 72 hours (3 days) has passed. So, if you want to give yourself
a second chance if you flunk it the first time, make sure you re-schedule
at least three or more days before the August 7th deadline so you can
schedule your second chance before the new exam takes over!

I'm getting asked this question a lot from people at work: If someone
registers for the CCIE Written before August 7th but plans to take the
 exam
on August 8th, will they take the old exam or the new exam? The way
 Cisco
makes it sound, they'll replace the old exam with the new exam on August
7th. However, in the past they've had a grandfather period where both
 the
exams are active at the same time and they fade out the old exam
 eventually.
If anyone has found out the answer to this, please post. Otherwise, I
 will
contact Cisco to find out. Thanks!

RE: New CCIE Written is here. Be afraid, be very [7:49615]

2002-07-27 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

Well, Cisco wrote me back and they said that any CCIE Written 350-001 exams
taken on August 7th or after will be the new exam, regardless of when you
registered. So, if any of you who registered for the exam before August 7th
to take the exam after August 7th thinking that you were going to take the
current exam, you better re-schedule, just to be safe.

Regarding re-scheduling, remember that you can't retake an exam unless a
minimum of 72 hours (3 days) has passed. So, if you want to give yourself a
second chance if you flunk it the first time, make sure you re-schedule at
least three or more days before the August 7th deadline so you can schedule
your second chance before the new exam takes over!

Re: New CCIE Written is here. He afraid, be very afraid... [7:49715]

2002-07-25 Thread Gaz

I think a CCIE candidate should have some knowledge of the older stuff. The
knowledge needed isn't too deep at all. It's always good to have at least a
little knowledge of the more obscure subjects.
We;re doing a large TR migration at the moment, and it's not the only one
we've seen recently.

Hopefully the exam is a little harder. I think it was only intended in the
past to weed out the absolute no hopers before they block up lab slots, not
to be added to the signature blocks of blaggers as a qualification in its
self.

Although even if it's no harder, as long as people realise that it's not a
qualification, just a basic test to prove you might be worthy of starting
the long path to CCIE.

My two penneth.

I did the power session:

In the power session, there was no mention of:

LANE
IPX
TR
IP6
X25
Security
PoS
Wireless
Video

There was little mention on:

ISIS
ATM

They said don't focus too much on that stuff, just the basics.
