Passed BCRAN [7:58548]

2002-12-04 Thread Arni V. Skarphedinsson
Well passed BCRAN tody, It was an ok test, not to hard, the only thing that
gave me any problems was, a lot of Modem / Access Server type question, as
that is somthing I have no hands on experience with.

Well onto to Routing next, then support.

Thanks to everyone for your input, I heard it wasn't that bad compared to
the other 3. If you know the material from those it shouldn't be that bad.
Plus I have some SNA experience from way back in 89' - wow dating myself. I
hope to read/study/do home labs and pass by mid July.

Thanks again to all for input.

While I like the list of commands, as I'm a very poor rote learner and

RE: Passed BCRAN [7:24213]

2001-10-28 Thread Brian Wilkins

I must respectfully disagree on the BCRAN being so easy for one simple
reason: there were some questions that were simply unfair. Let me preface
it by saying that I passed it a few days ago with an 875.

Now, here's my beef with the test. There were some questions that asked for
one answer, where given the information, more than one answer was correct.
One of those that specifically comes to mind had to do with setting up a
frame-relay connection and it wanted a single answer. It did not tell you
what version of the IOS was running, but two, out of a list of 5 or 6
possibilities were assign it statically using the frame map command which
seems right to me, and assign it dynamically using inverse ARP, which is
also correct if you are running IOS 11.3 or later. I, of course entered my
comments on it.

There were other questions that had only one correct answer, but asked for
two choices. One of those that I recall had to do with PPP Multilink, and
which technologies could use it. The possibilities were Ethernet, Token
Ring, ISDN, and some other LAN technology. Unless I've missed something,
PPP multilink would only work, in that scenario using ISDN. But I had to
pick 2!!

The fill in the blank questions, like you stated, were REALLY easy,
especially when they even go so far as to put things in the possible options
as the exact number of the dialer list that's contained within the question,
etc. Kinda dumb, but I guess that's their way of making up for the
impossible to answer questions like those I mentioned above.

For what it's worth.

Passed BCRAN - 943 [7:18479]

2001-09-04 Thread Gareth Hinton

Hi all,

Been a while. Had a bit of a break from studying (CCNP at least). Spent the
past week going through the book and passed BCRAN today with a 943. Chuffed
to bits with result. Especially as I was fairly certain of 3 out of the 4
questions I got wrong. Two of them pretty obscure and not bothered about
them at all.

62 questions - 706 to pass - 75 minutes.
Very few questions asking for typed commands, except the ones where you
select the command from a list then type it in.

Used the Cisco Press BCRAN book and one of the Boson exams to get an idea of
question format.
Exam seemed to cover most areas of the book including glimpses of the
wonderful 700. I must admit I was not over impressed with the book. It seems
to have a hell of a lot of errors considering the age of most of the
content. I've already done the routing and switching using the Cisco Press
books, which I thought were excellent, but I was getting pretty sick of the
lack of explanation in the BCRAN book.
But, having said that, if you read all of the book, including Appendices,
it's all there.

Anyway, on to the last exam - CIT, scheduled for next Tuesday at the moment,
bit optimistic, but being pushed by my company who need it for Gold
certification. I've been plodding along for a while so time to get stuff
done!

Thanks again to all on the group who have probably provided more of an
education/inspiration than any of the books.

Passed BCRAN [7:13433]

2001-07-23 Thread Sudarshan N Chari

Hello Groupies,

Just coming back from BCRAN exam. I passed with a score of 898. Passing
score was 706. Total 62 questions. Time limit was 1hr 15mins. Was able
to do it well within time. To my astonishment there were only 3
questions on 700 series. There were 4/5 questions on 1600 configs.

There were questions about the correct command syntax...but I had to
choose from a list of commands in the exibit. There were only 2
scenario questions, both were on FR. There were couple of AAA questions
and Network Security questions and 4 NAT questions.

I prepared with Paquet's BCRAN book from Cisco Press. I think I can
only expect 898 for 10 days prep :). Thanks to all great contributors
in this list. It was really helpful. I learnt a couple of things from
some of the threads, like I need to know about the 1600 configs, etc.
Also I should say, working with some of the products and hands on
experience really helps.

Let's see how and when I am able to pass the other 2 exams to become a
CCNP. Any inputs on BSCN and Support exams welcome.

Thanks
Sudarshan

For me BSCN was harder than BCRAN and Support was easier. I recommend
taking Support last since is it basically a review of the other three tests
but from a Support point of view Plus extra troubleshooting related
questions.

BSCN = BGP, BGP, and BGP plus OSPF, EIGRP, and a little RIP

The Syngress Published book CCNP Remote Access Study Guide ISBN:007211908X
has an excellent section (Ch2) on ALL of the relevant Cisco Router
 offerings. The IDG

I find that its better, if you can afford it, to not stick with just one
source but go to multiple sources not only to get a balanced view but also
to find other information omitted by another publisher/author. The future
gains always (hopefully) outweigh the present costs.

After all, all these books are just an authors/publishers interpretation
of
the Exam Objectives. Its pot luck what questions you get in the exam so
best to cover ALL the bases if you can.

  Hello all..

Passed the BCRAN with an 898 today. not a bad exam. A couple of
vague questions (or questions that seemed to have more than one
correct
answer but only one answer was asked for). Even took time to write some
comments and finished in 35 minutes.

One HUGE gripe: The Cisco Press book had a huge chapter on the Cisco
700.
The Exam Cram Remote Access book had a pared down chapter on the 700
just
highlighting the stuff you need to know for the exam (which was nice).
I
had maybe 2 or 3 questions about the 700 series. BOTH books had a
single,
small paragraph on the 1600 series tho saying it's for branch not SOHO
and
takes a WIC card. THAT'S IT! I went through all 4 quizzes in both of
the
Boson BCRAN exam 1 and 2 (over 400 questions) and I kept getting
hammered
with questions about the Cisco 1600 and what interfaces the different
 models
had (something neither book had any details about). Lucky for me I
tried
 to
take note, instead of blowing it off, because I got as many if not more
questions about Which model of 1600 has a 56K/ISDN/Serial port than I
 did
about the Cisco 700. I have to say that I'm disappointed that there
were
 so
many questions about the 1600 series compared to the 700 series, yet the
Cisco Press and Exam Cram book barely mentioned them I can't
believe
the Cisco Press book dedicated a very lengthy chapter to the 700 with so
 few
questions on the exam while virtually ignoring the 1600! KUDOS TO BOSON
 for
making practice exams that not only are a good simulation of the real
 exams
but also covered material that exam creators didn't even include in
their
own study book (Cisco!). I owe my 898 to Boson for hammering me with
1600
questions and letting me get the info I needed for the real exam while I
 was
  practicing for it.

Now on to Support for CCNP then CID for CCDP Woohoo!

Thanks to everyone for the group.. seeing people in the group
talking
and passing exams motivates me to keep going!

  Mike W.

Subject: PASSED BCRAN! + BIG gripe [7:7794]

  Hello all..

Passed the BCRAN with an 898 today. not a bad exam. A couple of
vague questions (or questions that seemed to have more than one
correct
answer but only one answer was asked for). Even took time to write
some
comments and finished in 35 minutes.

I have to say that I'm disappointed that there
were
 so
many questions about the 1600 series compared to the 700 series, yet
the
Cisco Press and Exam Cram book barely mentioned them I can't
believe
the Cisco Press book dedicated a very lengthy chapter to the 700 with
so
 few
questions on the exam while virtually ignoring the 1600! KUDOS TO
BOSON
 for
making practice exams that not only are a good simulation of the real
 exams
but also covered material that exam creators didn't even include in
their
own study book (Cisco!). I owe my 898 to Boson for hammering me with
1600
questions and letting me get the info I needed for the real exam while
I
 was
  practicing for it.

Now on to Support for CCNP then CID for CCDP Woohoo!

Thanks to everyone for the group.. seeing people in the group
talking
and passing exams motivates me to keep going!

2001-07-03 Thread Harrison, Michael

I think the main point of Mike W's message is that the Boson test is the
MOST accurate prep for the tests than any of the books. I recently passed
the CID test and the Boson tests hammered Stratacom. None of the books on
CID that I looked at to study mentioned Stratacom at all. Granted that CID
is a 100 question test and the Stratacom questions were This is ridicously
serious, are u joking I guess if he reads the question

2001-07-03 Thread Robert Padjen

Thanks for the comment about the Sybex book. ;)

Note, there is a lot of commenting on the 'lack' of
700 series material on the RA exam. All RA books have
this material because it is in the objectives. Cisco
can, and does, change material from time to time, and
it seems clear that the 700 material was removed in
part - be thankful that it did. The platform really is
a hybrid, and there is little that the 800 or 1600
cannot provide for a reasonable price/performance.

Please do not be upset with the authors re the 700
material. We base the books on the objectives and our
experiences.

I find that its better, if you can afford it, to not stick with just one
source but go to multiple sources not only to get a balanced view but also
to find other information omitted by another publisher/author. The future
gains always (hopefully) outweigh the present costs.

After all, all these books are just an authors/publishers interpretation

Thanks to everyone for the group.. seeing people in the group
talking

Who gives a sh*t how long it takes - isn't the point that you pass?

Which brings me onto another subject

I've met so many people who have passed NA/NP etc.. but get them into
the real world and they fall down like a sack of spuds..it's experience
that counts not just the certificate.

Just my 2 penneth (from the UK so can't use cents I'm afraid folks!)

If you look at the objectives for the exam and all of
the books, each spend a lot of effort on the 700
series. The beta and live exams that I've seen had a
lot (roughly 10). It would appear that with the death
of the product line they've killed the questions too.

Just sqeaked by, but I passed !!! 1 more to go for
CCNP then the hard stuff begins !! :-)

I found the test to be a bit misleading. Many of the
questions did not ask enough of a question to
actually give a difinitive answer, and 1 question on
x25 mappings the answer WAS NOT EVEN LISTED

I commented on that one and moved on.

Luck to all.

Lots of fill in the blank, but, you get a list to choose from.
62 questions, I think 75 minutes, 706 to pass.
I used the Sybex Remote Access book and the Smart Certify CBT course.

On to BCSN

Thought I would drop a line letting you know that I passed my BCRAN exam

plan on completing the BSCN and CID exams over the enxt few months, maybe
then I can justify raising my rates as a consultant :-)

I will take CIT next to complete the CCNP! I have Cisco Internetwork
Troubleshooting by Chappel and Farkas. Is there another book that would
work for CIT and help with the CCIE written as well? My plan is to begin
immediately after CCNP to start the track to the CCIE. From what I have
read on the board I would think the Caslow book might be helpfull with
CIT.
 TIA,
 Tom

In my case.. 1 down, 3 to go..

Congrats Mark.. I just finally got myself back on the study
 train myself,
and took the BCMSN Switching test today. I've been out of the
 study game,
and out of GroupStudy for about a year now (Sorry guys gals!!!) ;-)

Well.. I finally found the motivation again, and passing
 todays test helped!
I also found myself not studying as dilligently as I could
 have. In the end,
I made it thru on 2 things. Personal experience and 2 days
 of cramming with
the Cisco Press BCMSN Exam Certification Guide. I broke down
  bought it as
a last minute desparation move, as the Cisco Press BCMSN
 "course book" was
putting me to sleep every day by chapter 2.. (Theory is
 soo boring!!).

With only 2 days with the cert guide, I crammed the sample
 test read the
chapter QA quizzes over over.. and on the topics I didn't fully
understand, I read over as much of the chapter as I could to
 fill in the
 mental blanks.

I do think I got a bit lucky, as there were a few area's I
 still feel weak
in, but either got no questions on those area's, or barely 1 or 2.

So, the concensus is that BCRAN is the easiest? Interesting. I thought
todays test was easier than I expected, but still enough to
 cause a bead or
2 of sweat.. Personally, I know I'm horrible at things like
 Async configs..
but ISDN I find rather easy.

If anyone is still around from the last time I haunted the
 list (Chuck..
Tony.. Ozzie.. Paul.. anyone... Buehler.. Buehler.. ) they'll probably
remember why.. but that was in another life ;-)

Interesting that everyone thinks CIT is the worst.
 Personally, I'm setting
aside 3 weeks hard study time for BSCN Routing as the
 hardest. I'm on a
tight personal goal schedule. 1 test every 2 weeks, but
 again, 3 for BSCN.
So, tomorrow I schedule the CIT and hit the books. I suspect I have an
advantage, in that most of my experience is raw
 troubleshooting. It's also
mostly in routing, over switching, but the BSCN goes into a
 depth I haven't
learned from experience yet. So, I'm planning heavy studies
 for that one.
CIT I'm more secure about. Hopefully, it's not overconfidence..

If all goes well.. we (my test partner) should see CCNP
 accomplished by
mid-March. As she likes to say "Failure is not an option"
 ;-) Then
again.. one does not always need immediate gratification to
 achieve success.
 But.. drive on we must!

Passed BCRAN

2001-01-18 Thread Medley, Tim

I passed my BCRAN today on the first try. Thanks to all who have
contributed.

I used on the job knowledge, the McGraw Hill (Thomas) BCRAN Book, and the
Cisco Press BCRAN book in combination with the COLT BCRAN practice tests.

I have seen alot of mixed feelings over the COLT tests, I had two questions
that were both on the COLT test and the real exam.

If you don't use async lines and modems alot in the field definately study
up on modem configuration, autoconfig and modemcap areas. I got hammered on
this stuff.

Congratulations!
For the BSCN I have taken, only one to two questions are related to product

So, study hard for the above two topics (but don't forget EIGRP!!!).
I am going to take BCRAN next week, would you mind telling me what resources
you used for preparing the exam. Thanks.

Re: passed bcran

2000-11-30 Thread Tony van Ree

Raheem,

I only had the BRCAN book to study and it covered all you need to know. The thing is
to know all what is in the book. I found that in everyday life the stuff in the BCRAN
was the most useful of all the exams.

Then again I guess that depends on what you do and the sort of networks you run. Each
topic had its place.

Passed BCRAN last friday with a score of 909 out of 1000. Here is how I

 passed:

Read Cisco-press book by Catherine Paquet (Good, gives alot of
 information)
Read McGraw-Hill book by Thomas Quiggle (Also good, easier to read)
Used Boson practice test 1. (Helpful)
Took the one week training class at Mentortech. Mentor always does a
 great
job and the instructor (Steve Daleo) was excellent.

The archives are correct as to what to study, ISDN (BRIPRI), Async
 dialup,
 PPP, TACACS+, NAT, etc.

This was the easiest of the three CCNP tests I have passed (ACRC,
 BCMSN,
BCRAN). They give you a list of commands (About 40) that
you can choose from for the fill in the blank questions.

Three down, one (CIT) to go. I'll check the archives for CIT hints and
 if
the BOSON tests were good for CIT.

There are definitely some questions on the 700. I don't remember how many
but I would study it.

 Scott,

I am studying for the BCRAN right now and there is one issue that
contiues to puzzle me. Do we have to be familiar with the 700 series
routers or not. I figure anyone who has done the BCRAN recently would be
in
the best position to answer this question so hopefully you or someone from
the study group will add their two cents.

For what it's worth there are a lot of really bright and talented people
on
this study group. It is a great resource for any up and coming CCNP or
 CCIE.

Passed BCRAN was RE: Recommended Books for BCMSN BCRAN

2000-10-31 Thread Jon . E . Gudmundsson

Take a look at the archives about BCMSN. There was a message from me 2
months ago about BCMSN books.
I passed BCRAN yesterday and here are the studymaterial that I used:
Books:
- Building Cisco Remote access Networks by Pacquet et al. Cisco press. It is
good to have for the exam bechause it is based on the BCRAN course and it
helps you to consentrate on the right subjects.
- BCRAN Building Cisco Remote access networks by Tom Thomas II.Macraw Hill
It is an excellent book and much better than his BCMSN book. It explains
everything in details.
- Cisco IOS 12.0 Dial solutions. Cisco Press. This book contains everything
about dial up networking. I am definetly going to read it again for the
CCIE.
- Remote Access Exam Cram. It was not as good as the Exam Cram for the BCMSN
Other materials
-Papers from www.cisco.com
- Cramsession from www.cramsession.com. It was excellent paper to brush up
few hours for the exam and much better than the cramsession paper for BCMSN.
- Experience. On the job experience. I could set up a lab with 1 3620 one
800, 2500 and 2600 to play with.
Hope this can help somebody on the list

Passed BCRAN

2000-09-08 Thread Jeffrey Eiber

I passed BCRAN today with an 846 (706 to pass). It wasn't nearly as
difficult as I was expecting. I used the Cisco Press BCRAN book by Catherin
Paquet. I read the book once, skimmed it a second time, then reviewed a few
chapters. I wrote out lots and lots of config fragments for practice.
That's it.

Re: Passed BCRAN

2000-09-08 Thread michael champion

Congratulations on passing BCRAN. However, if you used the Paquet CiscoPress
book, I wouldn't exactly call it reviewing a few chapters. Rewriting a few
chapters would be more accurate! This book has glaring errors on just about
every page, and I am astonished that CiscoPress doesn't have a link to an
errata for it. The errors are not merely typos, but whole sections of
commands repeated with the same error (example "dialer-map" instead of
"dialer map"), completely misleading and erroneous information about "dialer
enable-timeout" and "dialer hold-cue", etc. And who can forget the assertion
that you use Reverse Telnet through Windows 95 HyperTerminal to configure a
modem attached directly to the local PC!

After reviewing the material on the Cisco web-site I realized that Cisco
could have presented questions that could have failed nearly everyone if
they wanted to. Even Cisco's own documentation occasionally has errors.

Regards,
MLC

Re: Passed BCRAN

2000-09-08 Thread Ian Schorr

I'm confused. Is the test that everyone's talking about passing the "BCRAN"
or the "Remote Access" exam? So far I've been reading them as one and the
same, but since the BCRAN book from Cisco Press (which I own) is supposed to
cover the same material as the BCRAN (class), not an Exam Guide (Cisco Press
says their Remote Access exam guide will be out in December), I'm starting
to wonder.

I thought the BCRAN (class) was supposed to be good preparation for the
Remote Access exam, but that there was no actual BCRAN test?

Since a true "study guide" is not available, and BCRAN = Building Cisco
Remote Access Networks, most people use only the Paquet book for Remote

Actually not :-)

I never buy books at Amazon anymore (unless I can't find them anywhere
else).

I always buy them at http://www.booksamillion.com if they have them, or look
at http://www.bookpool.com for a good price and availability.

The reason for the amazon link is that that is where I could find a picture
of the book, and they have good reviews.

RE: Thanks : Passed BCRAN

2000-08-28 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

The passing score is 706, and no I have not passed Routing 2.0 not Switching
2.0 yet.

I used the following to prepare:

http://www.insync.net/~drews/bcran/

I would have liked to start with Routing 2.0 instead, but there aren't
really any study guides out there yet.

I practiced on two 2501's, one 2509 and one 1604.

Hth,

Ole

Re: Passed BCRAN today!!

2000-07-11 Thread Charlemagne

Don't undervalue X.25. It is still in use within
the US, but in Europe and other places around the
globe, X.25 is very widely used. As Cisco is a global
company, your certification should be globally
based and not based on what is in use in the US
today.

Just passed the BCRAN today. I used the Cisco
 Press Builiding Cisco Remote

 was easier than the
others (ACRC, CLSC). I was suprised to find so
 many x25 questions in such
 a
new exam. Cant actually tell you any questions but
 I would know you ISDN
commands, X25, and Frame-Relay. Now on to CIT!!!
