RE: BSCN??

2001-01-30 Thread Buri, Heather H

For this exam, would you recommend that the explanation of BGP provided in
the BSCN books is sufficient or would you recommend Basaam Halabi's book,
Internet Routing Architectures, to pass the exam? Also, what book(s) do
people recommend for this exam?

I currently have the BSCN book by Thomas M. Thomas published by McGraw Hill
ISBN 0-07-212477-6 and I don't like it. I am only on Chapter 4 but have
already found too many typos in it. I expect a few, but this is ridiculous.
Can anyone recommend the book by Cisco Press for BSCN?

Thanks,

Heather Buri

RE: BSCN??

2001-01-30 Thread William E. Gragido

I would say that you are better off buying Sam Halabis book for a formidable
comparison. I cannot really comment on Thomas's book due to the fact that I
never read it. I can say however that the amount of BGPv4 info studied
should come from varied sources.

RE: BSCN??

2001-01-30 Thread Timothy Metz

I just took the BSCN today and all I used was the Cisco Press book. I read
the book and then read it again while creating my own study guide. So far,
the Cisco press books have not let me down one bit. If you know them, you
will have zero problems on the test.

As far as the test itself, in my case, the first two thirds were easy. What
I mean by that is no reading in-between the lines or remembering really
obscure details were necessary. The last third took as long as the first two
thirds. The questions were challenging and required much thought. I scored a
885.

Try "routing in the internet" by christian huitema (2ns edition has an
orange cover)
very in-depth coverage of all the major routing protocols, good to read
cover to cover, a brief section on IS-IS and some other rare protocols is
included.

plus: recommended by nanog ;)

RE: BSCN??

2001-01-30 Thread Fowler, Joey

Usually I try and stay out of the clutter related to books, but relating to
the Original posting for this thread(which I couldn't find) My personal
comments on the CiscoPress book are to read chapter 9 first. While studying,
be prepared to turn to it to clarify concepts. Sometimes you are so busy
trying to figure all the in depth stuff you miss the whole picture, and that
chapter tries to keep things simple.

Re: BSCN

2001-02-14 Thread John Neiberger

I don't know about the Sybex book. I used the BSCN Study guide from
CiscoPress, Routing TCP/IP, and Internet Routing Architectures, 2nd
edition. Read through both study guides and the EIGRP and OSPF sections
of Routing TCP/IP. If you understand and can explain what you've read
at that point, you'll do fine.

I just purchased the CCNP Routing Study Guide published by Sybex. Is
the
BSCN Cisco Press book better? I also have Routing TCP/IP Volume one.
What should I use to study for the exam.

I agree -- The BSCN book covered everything on the exam, and in the right
proportions. (I passed last week using only that book).

But I didn't use the Sybex book -- they're usually pretty good.

Re: BSCN

2000-11-22 Thread David Armstrong

CIR is the Committed Information Rate which is determined by the Frame Relay
vendor. It is the rate they guarantee that they will move your data through
their Frame Relay network. Each PVC (DLCI to DLCI connection) can have a
different CIR.

>From your example (I'm assuming that you are giving Port Access speeds) it
appears that there is a central router with a 128k Port Access and 2 branch
routers with 64k Port Access. The Port Access is the bandwidth/speed that
the router connects to the Frame Relay network. Data can possibly be moved
at Port Access speed through bursting above the CIR even though the Frame
Relay provider only guarantees the CIR.

>From the information you gave the CIR isn't known; however, neither PVC can
move data beyond their Port Access speed which in your example is 64k.

Re: BSCN

2001-01-20 Thread Seth Wilson

I'm studying for Routing as well. I don't have the ISBNs for these, but if
you want a good understanding of the material you should pick up Bassam
Halabi's Internet Routing Architecture, and Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP.
I'm presently working my way through the Doyle book, and find the reading
both easy and informative. I've started Halabi's book and I'm a bit lost
with all the NAP's and NSF's of the overview, but it seems to be just as
informative. I think these are probably two very good texts to read. I do
plan on getting the Cisco Press BSCN book just to fill in any gaps for the
exam. Good luck.

Re: BSCN

2000-10-18 Thread Daniel Boutet

If you go back a few days (starting Saturday morning) I have made a few
comments on the same book.
So far, on my first read, it doesn't rate very high. As far as a study guide
for the BSCN exam I would not count on it.
I know I will be using Internet Routing Architecture by Halabi (Second
Edition) for BGP and at least Jeff Doyle's
"bible" on TCP/IP for OSPF

I am half way through chapter 8 (bgp) and it is good for an intro to bgp. I
did like the "intro" to OSPF also from chapter
5 and 6. But this is all I will call it "an intro".
It lacks way too much "flow" and there is not nearly enough diagram/example
of real configuration.
However ther is a very good description of the output of the "show commands"
for OSPF.

Just a man's point of view!

I would recommend getting another book. This is first edition, and full of

What really bothers me the most about it is the fact that the IOS commands

No. It's only about IP routing.

There were no questions on AppleTalk, IPX or switching methods. You must
know EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, route optimization, and some policy-based routing in
order to pass.

Hope this helps,

Re: BSCN

2000-07-18 Thread Brian

I will tell you my plan. I am studying BCMSN today, since the materials
are out for that. The materials are out for CIT and BCRAN as well. BCSN
is not out and will not be out until mid-August (I am talking about
ciscopress materials, other companies may in fact have materials).

So I am not doing the BCSN first, by the time I am done with BCMSN, the
BCSN stuff will be out.

There are no 'BSCN' books yet - not until August. If you want to study for
it now, just start reading anything you can get your hands on in reference
to OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, VLSM, and Routing TCP/IP effectively. As far
as practice tests, check out www.boson.com.

I am studying for 2.0 to test on Friday. I was using the ACRC books and
there was a lot of DDR and Bridging. When I bought some study tests off the
internet for 2.0, I didn't notice any questions on ISDN, DDR, or Bridging.
Can you tell me, is this stuff not on routing 2.0 anymore?? Is it now on
the new 2.0 CCNA? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I test on Friday
and I would like to focus my study efforts.

ISDN and DDR are now on the BCRAN test (in addition to some on the CCNA
test). Bridging, at least transparent bridging, is covered a little on the
BCMSN test - particularly in regards to spanning tree.

BTW, you may have already heard this, but be sure to get some supplementary

You can go to bestbookbuys.com which is kind of a pricewatch.com for books.
It seems like the book is so new that they are going for retail at most book

That's what I did - it paid for shipping.

>

> questions, what do it focuse on ?

The passing score is 690 and you have 61 questions, if I remember correctly.
They are all multiple choice. You do not have to type in commands any more,
as in the ACRC test. The exam focuses on VLSM, CIDR, OSPF (single and
multi-area), E-IGRP, BGP (internal and external, plus scalability features),
route redistribution and policy-based routing.

Be familiar with the theory and configuration commands for the above topics
as they are guaranteed to turn up on the test. Know OSPF, E-IGRP and BGP
route summarisation, know how these protocols function (in detail) and make
sure that you are quite familiar with their algorithms and how they
calculate network reachability. Know BGP *thoroughly*. There are many
questions about it and you need to know how it works in great depth. Know
all the path attributes and the ways in which BGP routers communicate with
one another.

I can't stress all this enough. The exam is substantially different from
ACRC. You have to know all about how these scalable routing protocols work,
as well as how distance vector protocols function. There are the odd few
questions about those, too. BGP is probably the most significant difference
between the Routing 2.0 exam and the old ACRC test.

they have the best price and Barnes and Noble doesn't even carry it yet.

RE: BSCN Books ?

2000-08-01 Thread Fomes Iain

There are no cisco training guides out yet for Building Scalable Ciso
Networks
they are due to published the middle of this month
BSCMN has been out for about 2 months
iIf you want to study BSCN i.e the new routing exam study OSPF BGP and EIGRP
and forget the rest
Use the Cisco web site that is what it is there for.It is almost always
as well more up to date than even
the Cisco Press books yet to be published
There is not a book that will teach you what you need to be able to
understand it properly..
You need to do the hard work yourselves

RE: BSCN Books ?

2000-08-01 Thread Croyle, James

Not true, I just took a course by KnowledgeNet and it includes the official
slide presentation with notes below each slide on each of the new CCNP
track. I have taken all 4 of the courses, and taken 2 of the tests, about
to take BSCN. The courses are official Cisco courseware, and the class/book
is GREAT, and so are the presenters. No, I don't work for them. :-)

2000-08-10 Thread mlawler

This is tough but as I know now there are no books for the BSCN. Except for those in
the course which I have. But I am using them now and then have promissed them to
someone else. If you are in great need of this info try the router exam outline from
cisco, you can find the material covered in multiple places. Almost all of the
material is in the ACRC stuff and as a matter of fact a good amount of ACRC stuff has
been removed.

Good Luck

Re: BSCN Material

2000-08-10 Thread brandon.carroll

You can get all the information from the BSCN book, directly off the Cisco
website. Search for "Configuring IP routing Protocols," "Varience,""BGP,"
and the OSPF design guide by Sam Halibi. The only other info was route
summarization, and VLSM.

I'm sitting in the course as I type and I can vouch that a lot of the ACRC
stuff has been removed.

This is SOLELY an IP routing course. There is nothing about hardware
involved in this course like there was with ACRC :)

removed.

RE: BSCN Material

2000-08-10 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

I've been going through the official ICND (Interconnecting Cisco Network Device)
curriculum for the past week and have been surprised by how much of ACRC I've seen in
the course. CLSC as well. It's probably a fair guess that everything that you've
seen removed from the old ACRC course is in fact in ICND to make way for the more
complex concepts like as BGP and more in depth study of OSPF, EIGRP, etc.

It's not really surprising that the new ACRC exam has been renamed "Routing 2.0" of
it's appearing to be solely an IP routing course.

Just thinking aloud...

What are others using ?

Re: BSCN Exam

2000-05-10 Thread Annlee Hines

During the Beta period, several people described their experience--the beta
exam reportedly was heavily weighted toward BGP (like 50% or more of the
questions), some OSPF, less EIGRP, and a little of some other things. Try
searching the archives under the topic "Routing Beta" and limit the period
to March (possibly Feb, but I think it all happened in March).

Not really - there is a LOT more BGP in the BSCN exam. Saying that, I did

Re: BSCN - ACRC??

2000-05-25 Thread Charlie Hartwell

I don't know the exact details because Cisco aren't releasing exam
objectives for the BSCN. What I can tell you is that the pass mark
will be lower as it is a newer exam, it is likely to have more BGP
than you can see in the ACRC notes but the flipside is that there's
probably less "legacy" protocol questions - IPX will remain a bit but
Appletalk and SRB should be completely gone.
I'd recommend doing the BSCN - I *just* passed the ACRC a few weeks
ago but I was thinking in terms of trying the BSCN if I failed it.
790 is tough to get.
Good luck.

Cheers

Those objectives at the Global Knowledge web site are straight from the ACRC
course. Although I have not taken the Routing 2.0 exam, I recall the
consensus on Groupstudy was that the test did not resemble the current ACRC
very much at all.

Long story short, I wouldn't trust that outline until Global Knowledge is
ready to start teaching the BSCN - October, last I heard!

Re: BSCN Test (Routing)

2000-09-15 Thread michael champion

Cisco is apparently using a logical "building-block" approach to their
certification objectives. Assume that if you are taking a CCNP-level exam
that you are already expected to know any information required for the CCNA
(review the CCNA objectives to be sure you are confident in that material).
It would be a violation of the NDA (Confidentiality Agreement) to discuss
what subjects are on the exam other than rehashing the stated objectives or
perhaps a relevant course outline.

Re: BSCN; Inter vs.Intra

2000-09-26 Thread Jim Erickson

The prefix "inter" means 'between', and "intra" means 'within' - such as
interstate and intrastate, or internet and intranet.

An _inter_-area route travels between OSPF areas, from one to another - i.e.
from other areas in your OSPF AS into your area - and describes a
destination within your OSPF AS but outside of your particular area.

An _intra_-area route comes from within whatever area you're talking about -
meaning you got it from another router within the same area you're in area
and it describes a destination within that area.

An external route is one that comes from outside of your OSPF AS, such as
from the redistribution of another protocol.

Any routes that come from outside your OSPF AS, are external routes and are
not carried into a stub area. A default route is used as necessary to reach
the external destinations.

In addition to not wanting external routes, a totally stubby area doesn't
want any inter-area routes either. It only carries _intra_-area routes and
default routes out of the area.

To confuse matters further, a not-so-stubby area, IIRC, flips a regular stub
area on its head by accepting external routes but not inter-area routes.

this way:

Internet (the Internet outside everybody else website).
Intranet (your inside website).

Helena,

The general rule is, any material in the BSCN course is testable. Personally
I wouldn't expect much on Not So Stubby but defintely would expect at least
one question Stub and/or Totally Stubby.

There is a large amount of material covered in BSCN, "Not So Stubby" is only
a small part of it.

That's my 2 cents.

and will be taking my test on Monday. Then on to the routing test.

Best of luck.

Re: BSCN [7:12555]

2001-07-16 Thread John Neiberger

The only tip I have for that test is to really understand the basics of
EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP. If you understand how those operate, that will
get you through a large portion of the test.

It's a little too late to help with this test, but if you don't already
have them you should buy the following two books:

Routing TCP/IP, Vol I by Jeff Doyle

Internet Routing Architectures, 2nd Edition by Sam Halabi

The first does an excellent job covering IP interior routing protocols
and the second is one of the best introductions to BGP around.

Good luck!

Hey, be very well prepared. The exam is very hard. It doesn't even compare
with the CCNA. I just passed it (yesterday) and I got 896. Frankly, in the
middle of the exam I was sure that I won't pass it but as you can see I was
wrong. I didn't expec this exam to be so hard. I got lots of OSPF and BGP
questions, many policy routing and some supernettting. That's all I can
remember.

Regards.

62 questions, 90 minutes, passing score is 690 out of 1000. BGP constitues a
good 30-50% of the questions and you REALLY have to know it properly.
Access-lists and DUN are not required. You have to know VLSM, CIDR, OSPF,
E-IGRP, BGP. That's about it.

Title: RE: BSCN Beta Results...

Eric,
It depends more on your experience rather than your study skills.
I feared the FRS exam for quite some time because I heard everyone talk about how difficult it was. In fact, I didn't take any of the exams because I didn't think I was ready (I learn by doing, not studying and forgetting).  I now have my CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, and CCDP. I got all of them within a short 4 week period and scored quite well on the exams. I didn't really study much, only a few doc's and some practice tests.

Now, I would say that it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought, but I also have Ten years of real-world experience.

The point here is this; Don't assume that the tests are hard just because other people say they are, they may not know as much as you do.

...On to the CCIE (I bet I'll have to study for that one, huh?)

the beta's are tests actually done to find out wether they are too easy or
too hard, its possible they were too easy. on the other hand, if you have
enough hands on, and know what the answer to those questions are, you dont
need to crack a book for it.

BSCN focuses on:
Scalable routing protocols:
OSPF (new - OSPF over FR)
EIGRP (new - Query Scoping, EIGRP over FR)
BGP (all new, two chapters)
Route Redistribution (similar to ACRC)
Policy Routing and Route-Map (all new)
Lots of lab time (12 new labs)

Gone from ACRC are:
Access list (IP and IPX ACL covered in ICND)
Queuing (covered in BCRAN)
ISDN and DDR (covered in ICND and BCRAN)
Bridging

Be aware - be VERY aware - that the BGP content of the new class is quite
significant and substantially weightier than the old ACRC class.

Just a quick plug - IBM Canada is offering BSCN at the end of August. See
the following page for details:

The destination parameters

RE: BSCN questions --need help

2000-12-05 Thread Katson PN Yeung

Q.38 the answer should be:

C. It can be used, to specify the network number and subnet mask of the routes.

When using extended accesslist to do route filtering, the list will permit
those route(s) which is/are *exactly match* the number of network prefix bit.

The questions you have quoted came from the Cisco Colt exams...
I have found from extensive checking that many of the questions are scored
wrong at the website.

RE: BSCN MANUAL at LAST!!!

2000-09-26 Thread Lopez, Robert

I will be taking the BSCN course through GlobalKnowledge next week. Will
the class manual suffice as a good study guide. Are there any other books
that I should read? I do have access to an old ACRC manual. I'd appreciate
any feedback. Thanks!!

Subject: BSCN MANUAL at LAST!!!

After searching the earth and back, I have finally just bought a copy of the

official Cisco BSCN manuals (two in total) and believe me it's the bomb!!
I'm happy about my purchase cos I am confident that all I need to study for
the Routing exam is available in one place rather than studying blindly
using the Cisco website and various bits and pieces
I can hook you up with the person,he sold it to me for £70.00 if you're
currently preparing for your Routing 2.0 exams you'd know that there aren't
any books available yet..

Another advantage I found with the manual is that the topics are laid out in

an extremely easy and elementary manner that it makes an enjoyable read.
Every thing is covered afterall it's Cisco's official training manual,
although I have been studying with various materials...once I've been
through
the manual thoroughly am sure I'll ace the exam...

£70.00 is a small price to pay considering the fact that I have been offered

the same thing for £300.
If you'd like one too email me direct or ring my mobile and I may be able to

get one for you...through my contact
I live in London!!!

If you are studying to pass the test, the class books have all the info in
it that you will need (assuming GK uses the official Cisco material.) If you
really want to _know_ the subject matter, it wouldn't hurt to study other
material as well, such as stuff on the Cisco site.

Re: BSCN MANUAL at LAST!!!

2000-09-26 Thread Jim Erickson

Various aspects of BGP in particular. I don't have the Cisco URLs handy at
the moment, but they have been posted here in the past so check the
archives.

Also, since you are taking the class, be sure to quiz the instructor about
summarization and VLSM enough so you "get it" since the coverage in the
class text is limited (too few examples and review questions). If you're
already good at subnetting, summarization and VLSM will be pretty easy, but
if you just barely "get" subnetting in general, they may be tough (or, they
may help you get subnetting overall - who knows).

Lastly, as I said, everything you need for the test is in the class, but
extra info on EIGRP would be helpful, as would some extra practice with
route filtering.

This info is generally based on the things I saw classmates struggle with
during the class. I guess it depends on how easily the material comes to you
and whether you need extra reinforcement to solidify some of the concepts.
The thing I had the hardest time with was there were three main routing
protocols under discussion, each of which did things slightly differently -
I had a heck of a time keeping each of them straight in my head until I did
some further reading. For example, I don't know why, but it took me forever
to remember that OSPF used a wildcard mask in it network command, that BGP
used an optional 'mask' keyword, and that EIGRP used neither.

---JRE---
For extra credit, which protocol uses the command 'summary-address' and
which uses 'ip summary-address', and why would the 'ip' be important in the
second example and not the first?

2000-10-17 Thread Ejay Hire

It indicates that the route has been summarized (aggregated) and that the
AS_Path may not contain an entire list of the Transit As's. More Info
-->rfc 1771

Does anyone know an easy definition of what the atomic aggregate is and what
it does? I do know it is set by default unless the "as-set" command is
used.

RE: BSCN Exam :( [7:32267]

2002-01-21 Thread Mnatzakanian Serge

I just passed it this weekend. My trick was to REALLY know EIGRP and OSPF
since I am most likely to use those in my clients' networks, but then learn
just enough BGP so I could at least eliminate one or two of the answers...

Hopefull the 3rd time will be a charm! Good luck.

Re: BSCN Exam :( [7:32267]

2002-01-21 Thread ko haag

Try getting the Boson exams for the BSCN and do better than 90 percent,
plus read the
exam cram for the BSCN before you take the test.

Good luck.
