There is a cool little tftp client/server program for windows called
Pumpkin. I grabbed it off of tucows. I'm not sure if there's a CE version,
but it's worth looking into. The footprint is tiny.

RE: tftp server

2001-02-04 Thread Dave

Charles,

I know this sounds dumb, but I have caught myself trying to TFTP something
from a router to my computer when the TFTP server software hasn't even been
launched. The router would the generate the timeout message you were
getting. After you launch the TFTP sw you can just minimize it. The file
you are sending via TFTP will go to the TFTP folder by default.

I beleive that the problem is the TFTP server, which you probably downloaded
from Cisco's FTP site. I have the same problem with that one once in a
while, and I know many other people have too.

You need to get a different one, and I believe that 3COM has one for
download on their site, but you can probably find several if you search for
them on the Internet.

It is based on the ftp server concept, except there is no user authentication
required.
I beleive it UDP based.
Cisco has a free tftp server for th windows platform, i just am not sure abou
the exact links.

Hi there,

The tftp protocol performs reliability checking on its' own in the form of
a CRC check on transfered files. You are correct in that UDP is an
unreliable protocol.

Re: TFTP server

2000-06-20 Thread Ken Lee

I'm not anything part of cisco yet but i know that UDP is a connectionless
protocol whihc rely on broadcast. that's why FTP is a TCP/IP protocol which
uses. It ues TCP to establish a session in a server/client environment.
and TCP packet header/footer enabled packet checking capabilities.

Re: tftp server! [7:13203]

2001-07-21 Thread Mark Odette II

Chika-
For your TFTP server, TAC, as well as myself, recommends using Pumpkin TFTP.
It's solid and works great. You can get it for free at the following url:

www.klever.net/kin/pumpkin.html

I don't recall if there is a unix variant of it, but come to think of it, I
think that there is a tftp daemon you can turn on, that is installed by
default on most Free Unix flavors out there. As an example, if you are
using Linux, I bet you could (from the command prompt:) issue a "man tftp"
and probably get something on it, including how to invoke the daemon, set it
up to always be running when the system boots, etc.

>From the cisco router, all you need to do to get the tftp download going is
to issue : copy tftp flash, and then follow the prompts. Obviously, the
TFTP server would need to be going, and you'll need to make sure you know
the exact file name that you want... Sometimes we forget, and leave off the
.bin on the end of the file when in a hurry. :)

Hope this helps!
Mark

Re: tftp server! [7:13203]

2001-07-21 Thread Sean Young

Mark is right. If you are using Unix/Linux system, tftp is a daemon that
can be setup to run automatically at boot-time. However, unlike windows
tftp, tftp in unix/linux requires that the file must already be exit
before you can upload from the router to the unix/linux box. It is a
minor inconvenience.

If you would like to automate these things, I suggest that you learn how
to program "EXPECT". This is a very easy language to learn. I work for a
ISP and we have to manage hundred of devices. Everytime we want to push
out something, Expect will do the trick for us. Very connvenience.

Have fun.

You just need a tftp server/daemon to run on your PC. I like 3Com's
3CDaemon which supports tftp client and server, as well as ftp and syslog,
but Cisco has there own, and Pumpkin is another popular one.

Their IPCalc is pretty useful as well.

2001-07-23 Thread Michael L. Williams

Cisco IOS (and most TFTP server software) can't handle files over 16MB. I
found this out the other day after trying many times to copy (via TFTP) a
Native IOS file larger than 16MB. It would get 16MB into the file, then
return a read error and quit. (and I would have to sqeeze my memory,
because even though the file didn't finish, it took up 16MB of memory
without a name)

What kind of problems is it creating?

In the TFTP program, under VIEW, and then OPTIONS, try DISABLING the "show

I agree - Pumpkin.
Every one of our engineers use it now and never heard of a problem.
Also supports multiple simultaneous TFTP - not sure if this is a feature of
others or not. don't suppose it's that much of a selling point, but the
reliability is.

I've done this a million times... Check that you have sufficient room in
FLASH (for both images to reside), Ping the TFTP Server, & Copy TFTP FLASH
(WITH OUT ERASE).

Looks like this:

4500(a)#copy tftp flash
Address or name of remote host []? 10.10.10.10
Source filename []? 12-9Enterprise.MZ
Destination filename [12-9Enterprise.MZ]?
Accessing tftp://10.10.10.10/12-9Enterprise.MZ...
Erase flash: before copying? [confirm]
Erasing the flash filesystem will remove all files! Continue? [confirm]n
Loading 12-9Enterprise.MZ from 10.10.10.10 (via Ethernet0):

!!!

Then:

4500(a)(config)#tftp-server flash 12-9Enterprise.MZ
4500(a)(config)#^Z
4500(a)#wr
Building configuration...

00:09:20: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by console[OK]
4500(a)#

Lastly:

4500(a)#sh flash

System flash directory:
File Length Name/status
  1 8052512 c4500-js-mz.121-6.bin
  2 4784286 12-9Enterprise.MZ
[12836928 bytes used, 3940288 available, 16777216 total]
16384K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

I am showing a 4500 with 12.1(6) (the running IOS), housing 12.0(9)Enteprise
destined for all my 2500 series routers. Now- I generally change the IOS
names to avoid personal confusion (so please ignore the clarity ;-)

Good Luck !!!

Type the letter N next to confirm. You do not want to abort the download &
you do not want to erase FLASH before copying the image.

I actually have 8Meg of Flash

Cisco4000#sh flash

System flash directory:
File Length Name/status
  1 4650060 c4000-js-mz.120-2a.bin
[4650124 bytes used, 3738484 available, 8388608 total]
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

If you have a 4000M (additional images won't fit in a 4Meg FLASH/ 4000),
make sure you are running @ least 11.3(11a). This is the IOS I had running
when I pulled images into that model of router...

identified as a bootable file but will allow you to do it without the
extension.

I know when you do a copy tftp on cisco, Pumpkin TFTP
server reports 2-3 aborted transfers before the full
tftp download. This may mean that IOS is checking the
image name or just grabbing the first few bytes of the
file to look at the headers, etc to see if its a valid
image for that router. You can try renaming the image,
etc but I'm not sure what IOS looks at exactly.

RE: tftp-server :mismatch not ok?(CONFIGS)

2001-02-18 Thread Darren Henwood

Hi Pierre-Alex,
The reason you are unable to TFTP an image to/from a Cisco2500 series
router is because, unlike most other platforms, it runs the IOS from
flash. If you do a "show version" on a Cisco2500 the flash will appear
as read-only and not read/write. Therefore, you will have to boot the
router into boot-mode (change the config register to 0x2101) and you
will notice now that the flash is read/write. You will now be able to
TFTP the image to flash.

I hope this helps, and if you have any problems let me know.

Cheers
Darren

Re: tftp-server :mismatch not ok?(CONFIGS)

2001-02-18 Thread Circusnuts

Darren- you are right... but this is not always true when dealing with
2500's. The 2500 Enterprise routers pull IOS from FLASH to RAM (same as the
big Cisco's). I've only seen the "operate from FLASH" on older 2500's or
lower line (cheaper) models with non-Enterprise codes. In Pierre's
situation- the 4000 wanted to copy the 2500's image into it's FLASH bank,
here read only is OK (to "pull or read" the image from the 2500). The
running config containing TFTP-Server FLASH directs the image
to be pulled/read whether in RAM or FLASH. The 4000 needed read/write
permissions on it's FLASH, because it's the destination where the 2500 image
will be stored/written...

Here is an example of my 2500

2509>sh flash

System flash directory:
File Length Name/status
  1 4784286 12-9Enterprise.MZ
[4784352 bytes used, 3604256 available, 8388608 total]
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

Avoiding my studies :-)
Phil

Do you know how to give read/write permission?

Darren- you are right... but this is not always true when dealing with
2500's. The 2500 Enterprise routers pull IOS from FLASH to RAM (same as the
big Cisco's). I've only seen the "operate from FLASH" on older 2500's or
lower line (cheaper) models with non-Enterprise codes. In Pierre's
situation- the 4000 wanted to copy the 2500's image into it's FLASH bank,
here read only is OK (to "pull or read" the image from the 2500). The
running config containing TFTP-Server FLASH directs the image
to be pulled/read whether in RAM or FLASH. The 4000 needed read/write
permissions on it's FLASH, because it's the destination where the 2500 image
will be stored/written...

Here is an example of my 2500

2509>sh flash

System flash directory:
File Length Name/status
  1 4784286 12-9Enterprise.MZ
[4784352 bytes used, 3604256 available, 8388608 total]
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

Avoiding my studies :-)
Phil

Hi Darren,

I did what you asked (rebooted the Cisco2500 in boot mode). Still did not
work.

Cisco4000#copy tftp flash
Address or name of remote host [192.168.0.253]?
Source filename [c2500-js-l_112-17.bin]?
Destination filename [c2500-js-l_112-17.bin]?
Accessing tftp://192.168.0.253/c2500-js-l_112-17.bin...
%Warning: File not a valid executable for this system
%Error: This platform does not support relocatable images.
Abort Copy? [confirm]n

Cheers
Darren

It looks like the c2500 image you have is a
relocatable image, and the 4000 doesn't support
relocatable images. A relocatable image is one that
can be a different file # on flash. A non-relocatable
image has to be file 1. The 4500 is newer then the
4000 so may support relocatable images; this may be a
bootloader/bootrom version issue as well. cisco.com
will have the info though.

It is erroring because of the above. Look over my msg
below again. To eliminate tftp'ing it off the 2500 put
the c2500 image on a PC and tftp it from there. You
should be able to tftp it off the 2500 to a 4000
because that is reading from flash only...

RE: tftp-server :mismatch not ok?(CONFIGS)

2001-02-18 Thread Erick B.

I sent that too soon. I meant, to eliminate TFTP'ing
the image off a 2500 as a problem put the image on
your PC and set it up as TFTP server. Then try
TFTP'ing from your PC to the 4000. You'll probably get
the relocatable image error still... I'm not sure if a
newer boot prom version adds support for relocatable
images or not with the 4000. A brief look on CCO
didn't reveal anything.

If a image on the 2500 is running from flash - the
flash is read-only. Try TFTP'ing the image from the
2500 with your PC to see if it sends it to you. I
don't have a 2500 handy to try. This isn't going to
solve your problem but would be interesting to see
result.

Jason, which Linux Distro are you running? I'm experincing the same problem
described by Sean, and although it could be categorized as a minor
inconvenience that the filename has to exist prior to uploading them to the
tftp server, it's an inconvenience I would really like get make go away!

RE: tftp server download bombed!! [7:21975]

2001-10-03 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

It doesn't look like the download bombed at all. It just looks as if the
router can't find the file. Has this ever worked?

1. Is the TFTP server running on the client system?
2. Is the file in the default directory where a TFTP client would pull a
file from?

Erlend, you're half right. There's two ways to boot from TFTP. Yours and
"Cisco Nuts". This is his way (and from this output, you can also see where
you can use your method...

RouterA(config)#boot ?
  bootstrap Bootstrap image file
buffersize Specify the buffer size for netbooting a config file
  hostRouter-specific config file
  network Network-wide config file
  system System image file

RouterA(config)#boot system ?
  WORD TFTP filename or URL
  flash Boot from flash memory
mopBoot from a Decnet MOP server
rcpBoot from a server via rcp
  romBoot from rom
tftp Boot from a tftp server

RouterA(config)#boot system tftp ?
  WORD Configuration filename

RouterA(config)#boot system tftp c1600-j-p.bin ?
Hostname or A.B.C.D Address from which to download the boot config file

RouterA(config)#boot system tftp c1600-j-p.bin 172.16.1.1 ?

RouterA(config)#boot system tftp c1600-j-p.bin 172.16.1.1

Hello,
I guess I'll try Erlend's way...That was what was specified on the Cisco web
siteI added the tftp parameter as I saw it as an example command...So
Leigh, help me out here, how can I fix this problemLet me ask you
this...I was doing this telnetted to a terminal server at home from my
workDo you think if I do it at home, it will work...I mean, have the
routers in front of me... :-)
Thank you.

Certainly, "boot system flash slot0:myfavoritefile"

Old 7000's with pre 11.0 boot proms would not recognize the slot0

boot system slot0:

As far as I can remember, that is the way it is done, but if anyone disagree

RE: tftp server download bombed!! [7:21975]

2001-10-05 Thread Erlend Ringstad

Nah,

I'm always right ;)

the "tftp" keyword is default, so if you leave it out it will default to it
anyways. One way is optimal, the other is not ;)

And not to mention, i had a lot of trouble with one of my old 7000
getting it to work with the tftp keyword, but when i left it out everything
worked like charm!

As I mentioned yesterday, if memory serves me and it generally does,
you need 11.0 bootroms

Ensure that you have the "tftp-server flash " command in
your C2500 config. The below URL might help (while it is for 11.3
release notes, the process should be the same).

The bugger about the Linux tftp server is that the file must already exist
on the server before you can up or dowload to or from the server.

Hi

The version of TFTPd that ships with RH7 doesn't work right. You need a
newer or older version.

Note if you start the TFTPd with -c switch it will allow the creation of new
files if your ACLs are correct.

Re: tftp server setting in Red HAt 7.0 [7:98]

2001-04-11 Thread Sean Young

I would like to thank John for his valuable tip. I am also running
Redhat linux 7.0. The tftpd version that comes with Redhat 7 is 0.17-5.
I have to remove this version and put on version 0.15-1. TFTP works like
a charm. Thanks again John.

Regards,
Sean

PS. for those would like to know how to remove TFTP and install the
old TFTP

rpm -e tftpd-0.17-1
rpm -e tftp-client-0.17-1
rpm -ivh tftp-0.15-1

RE: tftp server crashes when uploading new image [7:20961]

2001-09-24 Thread PSIHOYIOS PANAYIOTIS

Hi all,

Are you using Cisco's TFTP server? From my experience, this program shows
quite often this kind of errors (specially when downloading IOS to 3640 or
3660). There are some freeware tftp servers, maybe you should try one of
them.

Cisco's TFTP server is not that bad. Just uncheck first two options when you
configure it (enable logging and show file transfer progress).
This a known issue.

7000 run from Flash WAS RE: tftp server download bombed!! [7:22164]

2001-10-04 Thread Daniel Cotts

Where is the gs7-pv-mz.111-12.CA1.bin is located? On the Boot ROMs on on
the Flash Card in slot0: ? Dave below gave you the correct statement to add
to your configuration file. There is an exhaustive treatment of this on CCO
in the 7000 router area. Also check any of the IOS Configuration Guides
under "Configuration Fundamentals." Good luck.
