Recertification
Group, Was on the Galton site to check if my CCDP kit had been mailed (it hasn't) and I noticed that both my CCNA/CCDA certifications now have the sentence: Valid through Apr 09 2002 (for the CCNA) next to them. My CCDP/CCNP certs don't have that yet. All my certs are still ver 1.0 (until I take FRS 2.0) So, has more information been released about re-certification? Kevin Wigle CCDP/CCNP
Recertification
All, I have just checked the cisco website and noticed the recertification policy is now displayed - it wasn't there before I went on my Holiday and there doesn't seem to be much talk about it on the newsgroup. What are peoples feelings regarding the 3 year lifespan of the CCNA/CCDA/CCNP/CCDP, and a 2 year lifespan on the specialisations? I dont like the fact that the specialisation exam is simply the most current exam for the specialisation - sounds like a money spinner to me. I suppose there is not a lot of choice but to make it this way though. I am also not too keen on the idea of having to redo all exams if your current qualification expires. Then I guess you don't let your current quals expire in the first place. Looks like I am going to have to get my CCIE after all as I am damned if I am going to put all that effort in again to simply stay at the the same technical level when for a bit more effort I can go the final mile... I will be dusting down the 800 page door-stop and actually reading it. I do believe the Holy Grail of networking awaits (thats the CCIE by the way). Just my thoughts. Good luck to all in their studies. Recertification Information
Someone else mentioned it earlier, but I am seeing more information on the Galton site implying the term of certification, and by implication, the time of re-certification. If I read correctly, the term of certification for CCNA, CCDA, and CCNP is three years. For example, my completion date for the CCNA was August 5, 1999, and the expiration date is August 5, 2002 ( I actually passed the test on July 13, but I did not get al the paperwork completed until later ) Interestingly, the specializations appear to be valid for only two years. For example, I completed my CCNP/Security on April 7, 2000 and the certification expires on April 7, 2002 I presume Cisco will be making more announcements regarding this as time goes by. http://www.cisco.com/warp/partner/synchronicd/cc/serv/mkt/cert/career/rece_ds.htm (need partner access for this URL) Recertification Policy Cisco Career Certifications at the Associate and Professional levels (CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, CCDP certifications) are valid for three years. CCIE certifications and Cisco Specializations are valid for two years. Valid certifications may be renewed indefinitely or extended. Without timely renewal, individual career certifications expire or become inactive. Note: Extension occurs when a certificate holder advances to the next level. RecertificationHow To renew certifications, holders must register for-and pass-the appropriate Cisco recertification exams. Recertification exams are regularly offered worldwide. Valid certifications may be renewed indefinitely. For CCIE certificate holders, renewal requires passing a recertification test and attending specific sessions at Networkers conferences. For CCNA and CCDA recertifications, the exam is simply the current version of the appropriate exam. The Professional level has different recertification exams for CCNP and CCDP certifications. Questions for these exams are drawn from the several exams currently in use for each certification. For Specializations, the recertification exam is simply the current version of the appropriate exam. Recertification [7:71578]
Yet another update to the joys of re-certification. Today I received a "new" certificate for CCNP. Also a new wallet card. The certificate doesn't indicate that I've been a CCNP since June 2000. However, it does say "valid through 6 June 2006". So, now if you're asked to show proof of certification and you bring your certificate your prospect employer will see if you're current or not. Which is interesting because the new certification look-up on the web site states that Cisco will not show valid dates. This seems at odds with the new certificates. If we have to prove current status I would rather have an original certificate that has a sticker affixed with the new "expiration" date. So your resume will have to show that you've held certification for "x" years unless you bring every certificate. Checking up on the website and I see that a new CCDP certificate is also on its way. Oh well, after another few recertifications I'll be able to paper my office wall. CCDP Recertification [7:69911]
Well fellas I passed the CCDP recert today. Man what a messed up test. The exam objectives on CCO(for all tests) are not what are on this exam. This exam is basically version 1 Routing, Switching, Remote access and CID version 1 from 3-4 years ago. I mean I did have some MLS but I had x25, smds, atm aal3-4 nonsense, desktop protocol issues, lan manager, old CID design questions that did not make sense, type in questions(which is to be expected) and old hardware that is probably not even supported anymore, like 700s and 1600s. I made many comments during the exam that these questions are no longer relevant especially for a CCDP update recert. It was all old stuff. I mean old stuff that was not too relevant then, specific 1600s and 700s issues, come on now .. I studied based on the info. from the CCO site, so for Routing, Switching and Remote access for the CCNP recert., which was updated, but it was my experience that carried me on this one. I did go over my old Sybex and Cisco Press ver. 1 CID books this week just in case, so that helped too. I thought halfway through I was failing for all of the older 700/1600, desktop protocols and x25/atm crap was driving me nuts. Since I have been in computer technology since 84 I was able to pass. A lot of the questions were hands on fill in the blank types so that helped me also. Funny though, I did better on this exam(averaging in the 80% range for every topic except CID) and got in the high 800s than I did on the CCNP recert.(Considering the CCO CCNP topics matched the exam). I only studied a week and a half for both and took them two days apart. What I learned in the CCNP recert exam, that I posted earlier here, did not apply on the CCDP recert. exam to my dismay so I was bummed out during the exam. In this case my old hands on experience rules. So, for those of you fellas preparing for the CCDP recert. your old books(even version 1 CCDP stuff) is fine. Survived CCDP recertification! [7:65115]
I just took the CCDP Recertification exam, exam number 640-529. I got an 878. You need 768 to pass. There were 115 questions and I had extra time. You get 2 hours. The test wasn't too bad. The copyright on the test is 2000. That will give you a clue regarding what's on there. The test was clearly broken up into 4 sections: remote access, CID, routing, and switching. Remote access was pretty easy because I studied for it. CID still had the ancient technologies and bizarre wording we have come to know and love. :-) Routing was the hardest for me, not because it included any routing protocols recently added to other tests, but because the questions were tough. But at least they were well written. I'll have to study OSPF summarization better for next time (CCNP recert coming up too.) The switching questions ranged from outrageously easy to tough. I was shocked at how badly written they were. The author of the switching test doesn't seem to be a native English speaker. There were missing articles, and verbs that didn't agree with the subject, and other clues that the writer wasn't a native English speaker. That's OK, but doesn't Cisco have editors? Also some of the right (I think!) answers had the logic backwards. Perhaps if you're thinking in another language and translating, that could happen. But I survived and am still a proud CCDP! I have CCNP recert next week. Does anyone know if IS-IS is on the CCNP recert test? How recently did they add IS-IS to the routing exam? Has the recert exam been updated that recently? I didn't encounter IS-IS on the CCDP recert, by the way. The copyright on the CCDP recert exam is 2000. I do know a bit about IS-IS, but I'd much rather study BGP which I'm also weak on but much more interested in. :-) Dennis is right, in general, that you can't just use your old materials. The point of the recert is to make sure you're keeping up with new stuff. When I took CCDP recert, however, it seemed that CID was still ancient and only a little different from the original CID test I took. Same with Remote Access. Switching and Routing had clearly been updated from the exams I took 3 years ago, though they weren't the latest version, I don't think, because I didn't encounter IS-IS. Thanks. Per Cisco's website: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/current_exams/640-851.html Questions for the CCNP Recertification exam are drawn from the BSCI, Switching, Remote Access, and Support exams currently in use for CCNP certification. RE: CCDP Recertification [7:69911]
You would think a notice would go out but I guess they missed it. I mean how many times over the last three years since we obtained our certs did we get update notices on the program plus reminders that our certs were expiring? I received lots of "cert" junk mail from Cisco over that period. What bugged me the most was the DP and the invalid info on CCO in respect to the exam topics. According to CCO for np and dp recert everything is an updated exam except for the CID. Oh well at least we have another 3 years for them to catch up. The newer topics and exam info for the recently updated np/dp looks really good, more voice and qos and content stuff. I think these update exam topics plus the added hands on simulation difficulty level of the exams will help keep the NP/DP somewhat relevant. Congrats btw "memory lane" you said it lol. Congratulations! I just passed today (first time VERY lucky ;), and I have to agree that it is a crazy exam. A couple of the questions were so badly worded that I didn't understand them. I just thought that I'd add a few extra pointers for the unlucky ones who still have to take the exam. There are some newer questions (e.g. quite a few on BGP), although nothing on IS-IS. However, a lot of the questions are very old - for example when did you last hear of Stratacom or configured a 700 series router (or for that matter used appletalk)! This was probably the worst Cisco exam EVER, and I just hope it is better in 3 years time. Now I just have to take CSI for my CCSP before my summer vacation. Good luck! I mean old stuff that was not too relevant then, specific 1600s and 700s issues, come on now.. RE: CCDP Recertification [7:69911]
Yes, the CCDP recert exam is old and messed up. The CCNP recert exam was updated for content over the last three years so it has bgp, hands on simulation and ISIS. IT will get better and tougher if the CCNP recert is any hint. Look at the current changes to the DP program. It will be more difficult if you have to recert in three years... Congrats also, good luck on the CSI.. /JS -Original Message- From: mailsub1 [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 02, 2003 3:00 PM To: 'jeff sicuranza'; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: CCDP Recertification [7:69911] Congratulations! There are also Appletalk and 700 routers on the CCNP re-cert. I decided to review the 700 documentation on CCO. The 700 is not listed on the router list. Fortunately searching on the 700 brought me to the right docs, although most of the links say, end of sale, etc. Kevin Wigle - Original Message - From: "mailsub1" To: Sent: Monday, June 02, 2003 3:00 PM Subject: RE: CCDP Recertification [7:69911] > Congratulations! Re: CCDP Recertification [7:69911]
There was only one appletalk quesiton on the NP recert probably from one of old questions from the routing pool. As for the 700 series nothing like that on the NP recert. The NP recert exam is one of the more updated newer exams with ios simulation for hands on testing. It is the DP recert exam that has all the old junk. Good luck.. Indeed, the CCDP recert exam is ancient, making you wonder what the point is. It can't be to show that the candidate is keeping up with new stuff!? ;-) I almost wonder if it's some sort of mistake. CCNP isn't quite so ancient, except for the BCRAN part which is still ancient. I did get some 700 questions. But Routing and Switching were updated and did give Cisco proof that I was keeping up with new Cisco requirements. Routing included BGP and IS-IS, for example, which weren't on the test 3 years ago. One would think it would be easy to use the same pool of questions for CCDP, but they don't. No BGP or IS-IS for example. SNA and StrataCom though! Oh boy! :-) Priscilla > > Good luck.. Re: CCDP Recertification [7:69911]
well... my experience is a bit different. As I said in a previous post I've taken this exam a "few" times. I encountered both Appletalk and the 700 Router on the NP recert and not just one question. I think the question pool is huge on this exam. Consider what it has to cover. "The Road Goes Ever On" (Chuck) just posted that he had a great walk down memory lane. I would assume he was hinting that the topics he saw were a bit dated. Of course, I probably shouldn't assume... What's to update in troubleshooting? There are only so many things that could be wrong, and only so many places those wrong things can occur, no matter what the protocol or topology. Wow, that is weird, your NP exam sounded like the old DP recert exam I just had. One gent on the Cisco forum had the NP recert that was updated, before me and that's what I got, so I am presuming you should get the updated exam as well. How long ago did you take your NP recert exam maybe they just switched to the newer stuff in the last couple of weeks. That is weird. Memory lane is right. Re: CCDP Recertification [7:69911]
Just to update this thread with my CCDP recert story. Today I surprisingly passed the exam. I scheduled the exam as a "recce" (to just see it) and guage where I was for further study. I had gone once through the Boson CCDP practice but I felt I needed to see the real thing since I had problems with the CCNP recert. So what I'm saying is that without much specific CCDP study, I passed with 829, pass is 768. With more study a higher mark probably could have been had - but, it's over now! Most of the previous comments on the exam are accurate except Priscilla mentioned that there wasn't any BGP. I had at least 6 BGP questions - which wasn't a problem with my study from the CCNP recert. The material is OLD. Many design ideas would not be considered today. Anyway, I'm good for both CCNP/CCDP for another 3 years. CCNP/DP recertification [7:58564]
Folks, I just received my 6 mos. heads up for my CCNP. My CCNP expires in May of 03 and my DP in June of 03. My second and hopefully last CCIE lab date is on for 7/30 but can be pushed out into September. Are there any re-certification books that specifically cover the recert. exam? Or, is the exam just a rehash of the same stuff with a few newer items in it? Has anyone taken these re-certifications exams yet? Any tips.. Greatly appreciated... With work and the CCIE stuff should I even bother to re-certify??? I bought the BSCI Exam certification guide to go through the new bits just in case (and to revise OSPF and EIGRP), and got the trial InformIT subscription on the ciscopress website so I could run through the Switching and Remote Access books quickly and check that there wasnt anything I was majorly rusty on (for free :) Its good to know its doable... CCNP Recertification Exam Review [7:66644]
The CCNP Recertification Exam was gruelling, and that's no April Fool's joke. But I survived it! ;-) Exam number: 640-851 (the current one) Number of questions: 112 Time: 2 hours Passing Score 732 My score: 834 Is anyone else taking it soon? Here's some advice: Do study. Take each question one at a time. There's plenty of time. Despite some of the gruelling questions, there are some give-aways too. Read carefully. Don't guess unless you absolutely have to. BREATHE! ;-) There's a variety of question types, including one right answer, multiple right answers (they tell you how many), drag-and-drop, type in the command, select a command from a list, and that new simulator thingie that Cisco uses. One reason the test is so hard is that it covers so many topics, in quite a lot of depth. After a while, your brain gets fried and you forget, is it OSPF that considers a high priority a good thing (for DR election) or it STP that considers a high priority a good thing (for root bridge election?) (It's OSPF). And with OSPF, does a 0 in a mask mean "must match" like in access lists or does it mean "don't care" like in static routes (and OSPF range commands?!) (0 means must match in OSPF network statements.) Those things may seem obvious, but by about question 72, you start to get confused, if you're like me. You just have to relax and realize that you DO know this stuff. Don't let your brain get into a Mobius strip like mine almost did. The good news is that the questions from the different qualifying tests are not merged. It's very clear when you move between the following tests: Routing: It's based on BSCI actually, not Routing, and is quite hard. Know your BGP, OSPF, and IS-IS. I used Doyle and papers at CertificationZone. You won't be able to just use books that you read when you passed 3 years ago. Support: This didn't seem to have changed. So you could use the Cisco Press CIT book, but there is a new resource available too. (Troubleshooting Campus Networks. :-) Remote Access: This didn't seem to have changed. The Cisco Press book edited by Catherine Pacquet is still an excellent resource. Yes, you may encounter BCRAN questions from last millennium's technologies and products. Switching: This had changed. So know the topics listed for the latest version. I'm not sure what you should study. I guess the official BCMSN book? I studied with Cisco LAN Switching, by Clark and Hamilton, which is excellent, but I still couldn't answer a lot of the questions. I suspect you need a lesser book so you know all Cisco's latest misconceptions about LAN technologies. ;-) For the switching exam, know your stuff because some of the questions are unanswerable by anyone with a logical brain. You'll get things like: Which 3 statements are true? IEEE 802.3 FDDI SONET Gigabit Ethernet Notice, the answers aren't statements! ARGH. Finally a word about CertificationZone. I have written troubleshooting guides for them but am no longer compensated by them, so I hope you won't think this is biased. Their papers were extremely helpful. Also they have practice exams for BSCI, Support, BCRAN, and Switching. The practice exams are very helpful, with one exception: SWITCHING! (The bane of my existence.) Their switching exam covers too many topics that aren't on the current exam. Well, that's all for now. I'm just happy to be certifiable for another 3 years. ___ Priscilla Oppenheimer www.troubleshootingnetworks.com www.priscilla.com Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=66644&t=66644 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi there, First of all, the questions for the re-cert exam are from all the 4 exams individual subject matter. Secondly, as far as my knowledge extends, CCNP and CCIE are 2 different tracks. In the sense that getting ur CCIE doesn't renew your CCNP certification. And if it expires, you lose the option of giving only the recertification exam. This information is to the best of my knowledge. I suggest confirm with www.cisco.com and please let us know if anything differs. Good luck with ur lab attempt/exams... CCIE does renew CCNP. -Original Message- From: Siddiqi Kenan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, December 05, 2002 11:29 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: CCNP/DP recertification [7:58564] Hi there, First of all, the questions for the re-cert exam are from all the 4 exams individual subject matter. CCIE does not renew the professional-level certifications such as CCNP. if I were a CCIE I wouldn't give a flying you know what about the NP. OTOH, a lot of CCIE's also carry certs like DP, as well as some of the specialty certifications. -- TANSTAAFL "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch" ""Maccubbin, Duncan"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > CCIE does renew CCNP. > > -Original Message- > From: Siddiqi Kenan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Thursday, December 05, 2002 11:29 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: RE: CCNP/DP recertification [7:58564] > > Hi there, > First of all, the questions for the re-cert exam are from all the 4 exams > individual subject matter. Re: CCNP/DP recertification [7:58564]
Tis an interesting question. I went into the online tracking system for an opinion. There, CCIE allows you to skip the CCNA and common exams requirement, but you still have to have to have CCDA and a valid CID exam. The CCIE option did not appear under my CCNP options. ""jeff sicuranza"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Dual CCIE and Recertification [7:54799]
I know if you have one CCIE and pass a second one it counts as recertifiying, however does this mean you would have to recertify both in the future by taking the written for each one, For example, Security and R&s? CCNP and CCNA recertification [7:72138]
Hi,all I got CCNA certification 4 years ago and not take recertification exam yet. If I pass all the four CCNP exams, do I need to recertificate my CCNA in order to get the CCNP certification? CCIE Recertification UPDATE (Networkers not needed anymore)
Thanks to Mr. Zudal, CCIEs are no longered required to attend Networkers to recert for their CCIE status. -Brad Ellis CCIE#5796 Cisco Hardware: www.optsys.net From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, February 08, 2001 12:19 PM To: szudal@ Subject: CCIE Recertification Changes Dear CCIE, In 1997, we introduced the CCIE recertification program. At that time there were two requirements: attend 5 CCIE-level sessions at Networkers and successfully complete a CCIE recertification exam every two years. In response to your feedback, we have decided to drop the Networkers session requirement for recertification. We will still have CCIE-level sessions at selected Networkers, however effective February 1, 2001, attendance will no longer be mandatory for recertification. All CCIE recertification deadlines will remain the same. Effective February 1, 2001, a CCIE will be required to successfully complete one CCIE recertification exam every two years in accordance with your current deadline. As part of this program update, we will no longer be issuing recertification certificates. Exam results are downloaded automatically into the CCIE database. When the CCIE team receives your successful exam result, an email notification will be sent to you verifying your recertification status. Here's some advice: Another piece of advice: make sure you take the exam BEFORE your certification expires or you will be wasting your money. Early in 2002 I foolishly sat for and passed both the CCNPR and the CCDPR *after* mine had expired. I waited and waited for the confirmation of recertification. I finally emailed Cisco who wrote back with the bad news: the exams didn't count because my certifications had already expired when I sat for them. I ended up paying again for all the exams and sitting them over again, so to speak. I did take the FRS exam and saved a few dollars. BTW, the FRS exam was considerably more difficult than either recertification exam, IMHO. The CCIE qualification exam was much easier by comparison (at least in April 2002 it was). -Jonathan Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=66768&t=66644 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: CCNP Recertification Exam Review [7:66644]
thanks for the advice. seems like very good and concise info! I have to laugh though, I started my ccnp over two years ago, passing three of the four tests and then got caught up in work related projects (damn work!) and put my certificatiosn on the back burner. the funny thing is, my ccna was about to expire in less than a month, so I took my final ccnp test (CIT) and renewed my ccna at the same time. it almost seems like you can find a way to work the system; I was kinda even hoping that ccie would renew my ccnp/ccna and then I could wait the three years complete that and then forget about the renewal issue altogether. scott ""Priscilla Oppenheimer"" wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > The CCNP Recertification Exam was gruelling, and that's no April Fool's > joke. Re: CCNP Recertification Exam Review [7:66644]
I discovered one thing that you can't do that you might think you could do. After I recertified as a CCDP, I wanted to just take Support to recert as CCNP. After all, theoretically I had recertified for everything else just by taking CCDP. Alas, they wouldn't let me do that. I had to do the gruelling CCNP recert test. It was quite a bit harder than the CCDP test mainly because the routing questions are based on BSCI. CCDP recert was still using the Routing questions.
