RE: Router boot up time [7:61848]

2003-01-26 Thread Michael Williams
Even without 'no service config', it shouldn't take 10 minutes to get a
router up. If you are consoled in, you will see the router attempted to
get a config automatically, but again, even with that, you should get a
command prompt you can control in less than 10 minutes. My 2 cents.

I think that the "ADSL" in the broadcast may be the name of the router.

I have seen this on one of my lab routers, and it tries to tftp the
config, using different variants of it's name, one of which is
routername-config.txt

10 minutes? Are you exaggerating? :-)

Anyway, try "no service config".

That will get it to stop trying to download a config file with TFTP.

You might want to figure out why it started doing that in the first
place to make sure it doesn't happen again. It happens often in a lab
environment with HDLC on serial ports. If you connect a router to
another already configured router, via a serial x-over cable, for
example, the new router SLARPs (gets an ip address from the other
router) and then tries to find a TFTP server. Even if it doesn't find
the server, it tries everytime you reboot anyway.

But it looks like you have an ADLS router. I've never heard of that
happening with an ADSL router, but perhaps it does. The solution in a
lab at least is make sure the other router isn't connected. Connect the
cable last.

What is the router doing? At what point is it broken? Does it try to boot
the image? Is it stuck in a loop?
You can try CNTRL-BRK, but I know that this will not work with some versions
of Microsoft Hyperterm. You can try hyperterminal Private edition
http://www.hilgraeve.com/htpe/newfeatures.html or user Tera term.

If there is a boot system command in the config file, and that command
doesn't list a network boot, then the router will NOT boot from network. If
the file in the flash is corrupted, it will go ROM right away. Cisco web
site has a nice diagram that shows all possible combinations.

I think if you leave your config reg at 2102 and then add the following boot
statements to your startup config:

'boot flash'
'boot system tftp x.x.x.x filename'

you should be OK. The router is supposed to try the boot statements in
order from top down.

2002-01-12 Thread Amit Gupta

Hello,

I have been booting my 3640 router through the tftp
server.
Recently I have installed a Flash Card and have loaded
the same IOS image in that too.

I want to configure my router to boot from the flash
card as the default option and in case of problems,
boot from the tftp server as a failsafe mechanism.

Please forward your comments.

Thanks & Regards

tyep i will continue to load up your IOS, if your router unable to loadup

If your router is able to boot up, change your router register value,
0x2102.

Then write mem.

If you router is failed to load up IOS, you need to upload your IOS via
console port.

Good luck

Hi,

It means one of two, either your router didn't find the IOS or it booted
into the wrong registry state.
My guess is that if you will check where your router booted into you will
see that you are in registry 0x2148 and not in the normal one 0x2102.
After changing it I suggest that you will try to finding out who toughed the
router because this registry state is usually used for breaking into the
router.

  I hope it helps

RE: 2509 start-up message!! AND Router(boot)#

2000-12-06 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

That message really drove me nuts until I understood what it meant.

The system bootstrap is also known as the "boot image", "rxboot image",
"boot loader", or "boot helper". The system bootstrap is a subset of the
system IOS loaded on the router. The system bootstrap is used to perform
network booting, to load IOS images on the router, or as an interim image
that can be is used in the event the system image (full IOS version) on the
router becomes corrupt. You'll know you're running off the boot image
(mini-IOS) rather than the full system IOS if you see "(boot)" appended to
the hostname of your router. Nazri recently posted a message asking:

"what the (boot) means..i can't even show my routing table...i copied sh ver
o/p... "

When he typed "show version", the following information was displayed:

  KB(boot)>sh ver
  Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
IOS (tm) 3000 Bootstrap Software (IGS-BOOT-R), Version 11.0(10c), RELEASE
  SOFTWARE (fc1)
Copyright (c) 1986-1996 by cisco Systems, Inc.
Compiled Fri 27-Dec-96 17:33 by loreilly
  Image text-base: 0x0101, data-base: 0x1000

ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 11.0(10c), SOFTWARE

As you can clearly see, the IOS in use was the bootstrap software and not
the system IOS image.

What the message "%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.1 may
not be correctly understood." is referring to is that the system bootstrap
image is older than the current IOS version (IOS 12.1). Configurations from
this version may not be correctly understood by the older mini-IOS version
loaded on the router. As is so important to know, prior to IOS 11.2, there
were significant changes with respect to how access-lists are implemented.
If the router is permitted to boot from the system bootstrap only, and let
run as a production router, the configuration files may not be correctly
understood by the system bootstrap; the router may not perform as expected.

Hope this helps clear up two threads at once.

Subject: 2509 start-up message!!

Hi there,

I have a Cisco 2509 Router set-up as Terminal Server. Every time it boots
up it displays the following message:

Copyright (c) 1986-1998 by cisco Systems
2500 processor with 14336 Kbytes of main memory

%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.1 may not be correctly
under
stood.

Is the above line normal boot procedure, or is there a way I can stop this
message from appearing?

Any hints welcomed?

Best Rgds,
Ash

RE: Router(boot)#

2000-12-06 Thread Kane, Christopher A.

I recently had the same problem on a production 7204VXR. I tried to remove
boot flash and re-add it then reload the router, problem remained. Found out
that the IOS had become corrupted, tftp'd new ios to it and everything
restored. This was something I hadn't seen before.

Side note: Since this was production and was stuck in boot, the only way I
could reach it was by telnetting from the directly connected gateway (border
router)(the oob was ring no answer, which seems to always be the case just
when you need to use it. ha, ha). Changed the default gateway to point to
where we had the IOS and got it onto the router.

Good luck,
Chris

If your tftp server is not at same network of your
router , you can use ip default-gateway, in order to reach the TFTP server. So,
you'll be able to do the download.

RE: Router(boot)#

2000-10-23 Thread Aaron K. Dixon

It
means that your router has booted off the boot roms.  Check to see if you
have an image in flash and if the image is valid.  Notice in your show ver
that you don't see any software other than the ROM bootstrap.  You can
manually boot in boot mode by setting the config-reg to 0x2101, but yours is set
to boot from flash.  Again check to see if you have an image and if it is
valid.

Re: EPILOG: Anyone ever have a router boot- showing this only...

2000-07-12 Thread Oz

The baud rate @ the console was set for 2400, & I'd thought I'd seen it all.
I'm still confused how changing the ROM's, FLASH, & finally the RAM did not
release this config...

just so you don;t go crazy on the 36xx boxes
The 3620 and 3640 have a jumper on the motherboard that will reset the
console baud rate to 9600. This can be used when the console baud rate is
set to a speed that the attached terminal does not support, and you cannot
use one of the standard methods to set the console speed.

  I
had a similar problem once except I was getting screens full of one weird
ASCII character.  It was a problem with the baud rate set on the console
port.  Best solution is to try accessing with your terminal software set
at the different possible baud rates (1200, 2400, 4800, 9600) and see if after
you change the baud rate and turn on the router again if you get a screen
  that is correct.

Keep in mind (by only

Thought I'd take out the obvious :-)

Re: 4000 router boot TFTP

2000-07-04 Thread Luan Kim

Hi Jim,
Usually if your ethernet interface on the 4000 is plugged into a dumb hub,
then when you boot up the 4000, it should bring up the ethernet interface
pretty fast which should allow the 4000 to talk to the tftp
server(10.1.1.9 in your case) right away. Unless you plug your 4000's
ethernet interface into one of those catalyst switches( like the 19xx,
29xx, 35xx, etc..), then it takes about 30 seconds for the
"autonegotiation" for speed and duplex-mode to sync up. If you're using a
catalyst, then an easy way go into the switch and enable spanningtree
portfast.

Hope it'll help you.

4000 router boot TFTP

2000-07-04 Thread Jim Bond

Hello,

I'm trying to configure my 4000 router to boot from
TFTP, but it always boots from flash. I suspect that
it's because when it boots up, the ethernet ip address
hasn't been up yet. Is there any work around? My 4000
router bootstrap ver is 4.6(4)

Here is my config:

boot system tftp c4000-js56i-mz.121-2.bin 10.1.1.9
boot system flash

Thanks in advance.

Jim
