VLANs have been designed to _.

  A. address forwarding decisions based on transport layer information and
spanning tree
scalability
  B. maximize the amount of traffic switched at Layer 3 and minimize the
amount of traffic switched at Layer 2
  C. address the scalability issues of a flat network topology and the
addition of network
management through Layer 3 routing protocols
  D. address redundant access to the workgroup and migration of servers to
server farms for increased security and management of data resources
  E. address segmenting broadcast domains while still providing network-wide
shared services and allowing users to use hyperlinks to hop transparently
between servers across enterprise networks

BCSN exam

2001-03-05 Thread Lopez, Robert

Just passed the BCSN exam this morning... A thank you to this list for the
exam thoughts that were shared and the encouraging conversations that have
taken place.

BGP and OSPF were prominent on my exam. I read the CCNP exam certification
and preparation books from cisco press. I also had the luxury of banging
away on a few 2500's and a 3600. Know your config modes and the details of
ospf, eigrp and bgp.

The BCMSN is next

I would say "D". Cisco has really looked at using VLANs for security and
management. But with Cisco's mindset, "E" is also possible. VLANS do help
segment broadcast domains.

Re: BCSN

2000-09-05 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

Looks like a detailed breakdown of this one is in order:

VLANs have been designed to _.

  A. address forwarding decisions based on transport layer information and
spanning tree scalability

(VLANs have nothing to do with Layer 4, so we can cross this one out.)

  B. maximize the amount of traffic switched at Layer 3 and minimize the
amount of traffic switched at Layer 2

(Design dictates that we want to take the opposite approach, and besides -
VLANs are Layer 2 services, not Layer 3.)

  C. address the scalability issues of a flat network topology and the
addition of network management through Layer 3 routing protocols

(Well, I like the use of the words "scalability" and "flat," but VLANs have
nothing to do with routing protocols, and routing protocols don't have
anything to do with network management!)

  D. address redundant access to the workgroup and migration of servers to
server farms for increased security and management of data resources

(H...redundancy? Not sure that's the thrust behind using VLANs...I like
the security idea, but think design again - that's a Distribution Layer
problem, not an Access Layer problem, which is where VLANs live. Scratch
this one too.)

  E. address segmenting broadcast domains while still providing network-wide
shared services and allowing users to use hyperlinks to hop transparently
between servers across enterprise networks

(Okay, segmenting broadcast domains I love...but *hyperlinks*? Your signal
is breaking up, Captain...)

Every answer given is a tug-o-war in itself - it gives enough "correctness"
to make you want to pick it, but then throws a bunch of crap at you from
left field. So, the verdict is: this has to be one of the most
poorly-worded quiz questions *ever* written. Ignore it. :-)

Sincerely,

I would vote for E, if a single choice. All of them have some part of
the answer that appears somewhat bogus. D mentions redundant access,
which VLANs aren't really designed for, but the security part fits.
Answer E correctly addresses the reduction of broadcast domains, but
the hyperlinks part of the answer is wacko.

Re: BCSN

2000-09-07 Thread Low How Ming

I agree with Bradley that there is no clear correct answer for this
question, but given that we're looking for the best answer, I would choose
E.

A:nothing to do with transport layer
B:too ambiguous (not necessary that inter-VLAN routing uses Layer 3
switching, could use an external router doing software routing)
C:does address scalability issues, but nothing to do with Layer 3
routing protocols for network management VLAN
D:VLANs provide redundant access to workgroup?? Most likely no.
E:First part is on the nail, second part is extremely vague

Any comments?

What would be the right answer to this question.
I got this off the cisco site and I answered c but they marked it rong. I
think this is a mistake.
Thanks
Duck

RE: BCSN

2000-09-07 Thread Andrew Larkins

Since when does a VLAN provide redundant access to a workgroup - answer NO.
VLANS are to create "secure" collision domains - no overlapping.. Again , I
believe "E" is the way to go

Thanks
Duck

Re: BCSN

2000-09-08 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

Yeah but you said that E is right out of the BCMSN book what page is it on.
I don't think that VLANs PROVIDE the kind of hopping they're talking about.
That would be something that layer 3 does there is nothing in a VLAN design
to reach another VLAN without a layer 3 protocol. got to be C.
See if this makes sense:
VLANs have been designed to _provide network-wide shared services and
allow users to use hyperlinks to hop
transparently between servers across enterprise networks and address the
segmenting broadcast domains.
I really have a hard time with the word PROVIDE in the ? they may both be
right in cisco's mind but the word should be ALLOW not PROVIDE in my mind.
See if this makes sense:
VLANs have been designed to _ALLOW network-wide shared services and
allow users to use hyperlinks to hop
transparently between servers across enterprise networks and address the
segmenting broadcast domains.
I would take this in a heart beat.
I think this has been a good thread, there has been about 6-8 different
individuals participate and nobody asked for free software or what is the
cut score for CCNA or where is free lab time.
Still want the word for word page for E on this like was stated. I can tell
you which page C is on word for word, if you want.

RE: BCSN

2000-09-08 Thread William E Gragido

You have to remember that VLANS are logical entitiies, not physical. The
amount of redundancy that they provide will be inversely related to the
reliability of the physical networks that they are situated in, regardless
of the fact that VLANS in design and concept are used to circumvent said
physical networks. So if your configuration is solid and your physical
networks are concrete you should be fine.

2000-09-11 Thread Ariel Banzon

If you look around, people who have taken the BSCN mention 30% consist of
BGP. I missed the ACRC by 3 questions, I guess I did not know it. However,
it only had 1 question at the time on BGP. I would look into purchasing a
new BSCN book.

I've recently learned from my publisher that the CISCO version of BSCN book
is delayed for release. Try Examcram.com. I'm not sure how good their
book is. If it is as good as their Windows NT stuff, I'd bank on it. Here
are the books I've ordered for this test. Keep in touch if you want to pal
around for the BSCN test. I can be reached at

BCSN book

2000-05-31 Thread Richard Holland

As it looks right now, I may be authoring a chapter in a popular line
of certification books for the CCNP 2.0 track. I can't say the company at
this time, I'll follow up with more information when I can. This would put
one of us in an insider position in the certification world, I could
probably be put into a position where I can answer questions such as "what's
cisco gonna do about the 1.0 ccnps?", etc.

Wish me luck

Convergence question - BCSN

2000-12-08 Thread Dyland Desmarais

Greets all,

I am currently studying for the BCSN exam, have a question . . .

1. When a distant vector protocol sends out a "flash" update when a
route goes down, do the neighboring routers who receive the "flash"
update send out their own updates immediately or do they wait for their
default update times (ie rip 's is every 30 seconds) to expire.

2. For those who have a copy of Cisco Press BCSN ISBN:1-57870-228-3:

If you'll consider Figure 1-12 on page 25, why would Routers D and E go
into holddown if the router mesh is using split horizon?

>From what I can tell, Router d would be sending out poisoned reverse
updates after Router C has updated its route to network 1.1.0.1 with the
update received from router B. What is preventing Router C from
changing its route information to what it is receiving from Router D.

Thanx in advance . . .

Dyland

Configuration Exercise: BCSN

2000-12-22 Thread FREDL L AZARES

I am currently studying for the BCSN exam, have a question . . .
1. For those who have a copy of Cisco Press BCSN
 ISBN:1-57870-228-3:
Page 58 Step 12, Question: How many paths are in the IGRP routing table
to the 192.168.x.64 subnet?
Why are multiple paths to the subnet?

Answer: There are three routes to the 192.168.x.64 subnet in the routing
table. there are multiple paths
in the routing table because they are all of equal metric (in this case,
the metric is 158350).

I don't understand how the author arrived with three routes to the
192.168.x.64 subnet. Also, the metric
= 158,350. I know the BW=64000 and time delay = metric/bw= 2.4742
seconds. How did they arrived with this metric of 158,350?

Thanx in advance . . .

BCSN [7:36985]

2002-03-01 Thread Brian Zeitz

Hello Friends,

I just scheduled the BCSN exam for Next Sunday. This is my second try at
it. I really know a lot more then I did the first time around, and the
first time around I only missed by a few questions. My question is,
saying if I did pass this exam, when will the new exams be implemented?
How much time do I have to take the other 3 exams before they change to
the new format? I guess this is motivation for me to get the CCNP done
quickly.

Re: BCSN - OSPF

2000-08-31 Thread Phil Barker

Luke,
Imagine being given a routing table and being
asked something indirect about it, such as what area
type is this router. Possible answers : ASBR, ABR,
Stubby, Not-so-stubby etc. This detail isn't given
explicitly but needs to be deduced from the routing
table you are given.
So in a nutshell, know it very well.

Regards,

Phil.

PS : I've forgotten most of my OSPF knowledge now as
I've been on an EIGRP network for the past 6 months,
but I know how to get the info back in my brain in a
short time. This, I believe is the key when you have
such a diverse and deep level of knowledge required
to be effective at your job.

Title: BCSN - OSPF

If it is mentioned in the objectives you better
know it very well. Consult CCO and be familiar with all of the OSPF-related
commands and case studies. Don't shortchange your acquisition of knowledge just
for the sake of passing an exam.

Is there a currently available study guide for the BCSN exam? Cisco Press

I am about to take the 504 BCSN exam, and I was wondering what people who
have taken the test thought about it. I have read Todd Lammle's book CCNP

the questions in the book are pretty easy. Does anyone have any advice for

Re: Convergence question - BCSN

2000-12-09 Thread Mike Canfield

1) Flash updates are responded to immediately (and then I think the timers
are reset.)

2) D would be sending out a poison reverse while it is in holddown (which is
3 times longer than the update timer). And because it now has a route from B
in its table it would ignore the poisoned updates.

Thanx in advance . . .

Dyland

Re: Convergence question - BCSN

2000-12-09 Thread Kenneth Lorenzo

D will still send updates to router C but it would be with a metric of
"unreachable" or 16 hops for RIP. C will look at this and will:

a) If an update was received from B first, for a better route, it will put
it in the database and drop the "unreachable" packet being sent to it.

b) If an update was received from D, it will enter it into the route as
unreachable, start the holddown timer but will eventually update its
database when it receives an updated route from B. Since B's route will be
better than "unreachable", the holddown timer will be ignored and the route
reinstated.

Hope this answers your question.

As far as triggered update goes, on page 25, #1 of RIP Convergence, it says
"Router D creates a new flash update and sends it to Router E"... that is
upon receiving a flash update from C.

RE Configuration Exercise: BCSN

2000-12-22 Thread Dyland Desmarais

I'm not sure if your doing this on actual physical equipment but if you
would refer to the figure 1-15 on page 43:
P1R1 can route to the subnet 192.168.1.65 (this is subnet 64, 65 is the
first available host, configured on P1R2 interface E0) through S0 and S1
(192.168.1.18, 192.168.1.34).
It can also access that subnet by routing through S0 on P1R3 (192.168.1.66)

As for the math, the show ip protocols command does not give the required
information needed to calculate the metric by hand ( i may be mistaken on
this so anyone please correct me if needed)

Whenever Cisco feels like it. They're not consistent with the time between
the beta exams and the release of the new exams. It also depends how happy
Cisco is with the results of the beta's. If they're not happy with them, who
knows when new exams will be released. For example, look at the CID 640-025
exam. That beta was done about a year ago. Cisco obviously wasn't happy with
the results, so we still don't have a new exam for it yet. Answering your
question, if everything goes as planned, my guess is that the new CCNP exams
will be available in about 3-4 months. However, any sooner and I'll go into
shock! :-)

>>> "Brian Zeitz"  3/1/02 9:47:28 AM >>>
Hello Friends,

I just scheduled the BCSN exam for Next Sunday. This is my second try
at
it. I really know a lot more then I did the first time around, and the
first time around I only missed by a few questions. My question is,
saying if I did pass this exam, when will the new exams be
implemented?
How much time do I have to take the other 3 exams before they change
to
the new format? I guess this is motivation for me to get the CCNP done
quickly.

Whenever Cisco feels like it. They're not consistent with the time between
the beta exams and the release of the new exams. It also depends how happy
Cisco is with the results of the beta's. If they're not happy with them, who
knows when new exams will be released. For example, look at the CID 640-025
exam. That beta was done about a year ago. Cisco obviously wasn't happy with
the results, so we still don't have a new exam for it yet. Answering your
question, if everything goes as planned, my guess is that the new CCNP exams
will be available in about 3-4 months. However, any sooner and I'll go into
shock! :-)

What planet was the new CID exam released on? I just checked VUE and
Prometric but didn't see the new exam listed there (it should be 640-520,
right?). The Cisco site still shows the 640-025 exam as the current one.

Andy, can you shed some light on this, please?

The passing score is 690. I used the ACRC material, Halabi's book: Internet

Gateway Protocol for Interdomain Routing, and the new Boson prep test for
BSCN. Boson also has a .pdf on their Cisco page outlining the differences

RE: BCSN 2.0 Preparation

2000-07-06 Thread Jon . E . Gudmundsson

I am going to take that exam on the 26 th of august. This exam is much build
on routing protocols like OSPF, BGP and EIGRP. Here is that I have studied
so far:
1) The exam objectives on the cisco page
2) There is a good explanation of the difference between the old ACRC and
BSCN on www.boson.com in pdf format
3) Advanced Cisco router configuration Study guide by Todd Lamle from Sybex
( I read the chapters about ospf, eigrp and BGP but I skip everything else in
it.
4)Advanced cisco router configuration Exam Notes by Todd Lamle from Sybex (I
do the same for that book as well)
5) ACRC student guide from a course that someone at my work took 3 years
ago. I read the routing protocol part and skip the rest
6) I am reading now ospf: Anatomy of an internet routing protocol by John.
T. Moy. It is an excellent book about the OSPF and goes into great details.
Moy is the author of the most RFCs that have been published of ospf.
7) I will read through the www.cisco.com about ospf, eigrp and bgp through
the next month.
8) I am waiting for following books to arrive:
Internet Routing Architectures
ISBN: 1-56205-652-2
By Bassam Halabi

CCIE Professional Development: Routing TCP/IP
ISBN: 1-57870-041-8
By Jeff Doyle

Advanced Cisco Router Configuration (ACRC)
ISBN: 1-57870-074-4
Edited by Laura Chappell

IP Routing Fundamentals"
 Mark A. Sportack;

I am looking for a book or article on the net about ospf over frame relay.
Moy do not take that in as much details as I like to but maybe some of the
above books that I am ordering will dig deeper into it.
Hope this helps

have taken the test thought about it. I have read Todd Lammle's book CCNP
Switching Study Guide, I thought this book was a little basic in content and
the questions in the book are pretty easy. Does anyone have any advice for

Anyone's comments on BCSN class?

To all those that have attended the Building Scalable Cisco Networks (BSCN)

1) Any recommendations before going into the class?
2) Any preperation?
3) In retrospect, was there anything that you felt you would have asked for
up front or during the course of the class had you known what you know now?

Thanks so much. This group has been invaluable for me.

As a BSCN instructor, I can advise you to make sure you have a good
understanding of subnetting, RIP and IGRP, access lists, Frame Relay
operation. These are probably the critical areas with which people have the
most difficulty, because not knowing, for example, RIP and IGRP causes
problems understanding OSPF, E-IGRP and BGP. Similarly, VLSM requires
subnetting knowledge, so that is also a must.

I think these few important points will see you through BSCN successfully.

RE: Anyone's comments on BCSN class?

2000-10-13 Thread Daniel Cotts

Just returned from BSCN with MentorTech. I did not study any of the material
beforehand but did meet the prerequisites. Seeing that you already have CCNP
you should be quite comfortable.

At issue is always the makeup of the class members. If many have the "deer
in the headlights look" the instructor may have to change the pace of the
class. Subnetting and VLSM took a day and a half. That is listed as a
prerequisite. I don't know if that is the normal pace. We did feel a little
rushed at the end. Judging by my routing table many of the groups did not
finish their labs. They cut out at five - done or not.
1) Recommendation to all. Expect to be introduced to a lot of material. It
would be a rare person who would know it well by week's end. Expect to spend
a lot of time in further study. I have some routers so I will be able to
redo the labs. They do a lot with a few boxes. A good idea would be to
review each days material in the evening. I'll be making up flash cards from
the objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter.
2) Prep. The more that you know - the more in depth your questions can be.
Great sources are CCO, and the Cisco Press books that cover routing. Jeff
Doyle, Bassam Halabi, Tom Thomas, the EIGRP book, and ACRC. If you know all
that material then you don't need the class.
3) No.

Enjoy!

RE: Anyone's comments on BCSN class?

2000-10-14 Thread Daniel Boutet1

I am doing self study and bought a few of the books you mentioned.

The first on I have attacked is the one by Thomas II

Hey I am only on page 65 and I am getting a little ticked off.
I've been waiting for this book for a month now and I finally got it.
(ordered it so I could not look at it before I paid).
ISBN: 0-07-212477

So far there is a lot of assumption from the authors. All is just "thrown"
with little or no explanation.

Chapter 2 answer key (2.10) full of errors
Typo's: too many to mention
Figures on Chapter 3 (page 65) not very well presented (personal opinion)

I had high expectation and was anticipating a really good book.
It is early in the book and early this Saturday morning but I sure hope it
gets better.

I will follow up on this, but sure would like some feedback.

Daniel

Just returned from BSCN with MentorTech. I did not study any of the material
beforehand but did meet the prerequisites. Seeing that you already have CCNP
you should be quite comfortable.

At issue is always the makeup of the class members. If many have the "deer
in the headlights look" the instructor may have to change the pace of the
class. Subnetting and VLSM took a day and a half. That is listed as a
prerequisite. I don't know if that is the normal pace. We did feel a little
rushed at the end. Judging by my routing table many of the groups did not
finish their labs. They cut out at five - done or not.

Passed BCSN - need opinion on BCRAN book

2000-12-08 Thread Barronton, Ken

Hello All,

Passed BCSN this morning with an 804. Not great, but not as hard as I
anticipated. Some questions very vague!

Just as others have said, the objectives from Cisco is what you need to know
well, especially OSPF and BGP!

Sources used:
TCP\IP Routing - Jeff Doyle
Boson test 1
Various links provided by the good people on this list including a lot of
Cisco links

On to BCRAN and to open another debate...

Building Cisco Remote Access Networks by Catherine Paquet ISBN 1578700914
or
Building Cisco Remote Access Networks by Thomas M. Thomas IIISBN
0072124806
Both get high praises, which is better???

Thanks

Halabi's BGP study guide and OSPF study guide is a must!

You can find them on CCO. It's white paper, u can search for them.

Good Luck.

Re: Passed BCSN - need opinion on BCRAN book

2000-12-10 Thread Tony van Ree

Hi,

I have a copy of the Catherine Paquet book beside me. We here work in the field of
customer access and this book is used daily in real life situations. I presents a
bundle of useful info for details one forgets. I have found it the most excellent
book of all the books I have studied. It covers heaps, is well written, easy to read
and presents real stuff.

Re: passed BCMSN onto BCSN question for u?

2000-10-24 Thread Dan Henry

I just passed BSCN today, score 919 out of 1000 possible. The
resources I used were those referenced by others on this list:
'Routing TCP/IP' by Doyle, 'Internet Routing Architectures' by Halabi,
and Boson BSCN test #1. I was also fortunate enough to attend a 3-day
condensed version of the BSCN course designed for channel partners.
Everything you need is in the two books I mentioned, but it's a lot of
reading. Good luck.

Did anyone find IS-IS on their exam? And if so, to what extent?

I believe IS-IS is on the BSCI for the CCIP, but no on the BSCN for the
CCNP..

IS-IS is not covered by the BSCN exam. It is covered on the BSCI exam.

No IS-IS is not covered on BSCN, it is however on BCSI test for CCIP
which you can use instead of BSCN for CCNP.
