Stus-List Re: Bottom paint- Pettit Black Widow

2023-08-09 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
I’ve been using BW for about 5 years now. Buzz down with 80grit and recoat in the spring. Little hard growth, slime worthy of a cleaning every other week in the summer for racing. This year put 2 coats on, went nearly 8 weeks before it needed slime removal, still no hard growth. 2-3 weeks between cleanings since. Boat is in brackish water in upper Mt Hope Bay. Coat finish is passable without burnishing, and scotchbrite in the water makes it smoother as the season goes on. This has been the best year it’s performed thus far. Chuck BC&C41 TenaciousSomerset, MA Sent from my iPhoneOn Aug 9, 2023, at 9:52 AM, Joel Aronson via CnC-List wrote:FWIW, on the Chesapeake, their Trinidad SR is the first choice.JoelOn Wed, Aug 9, 2023 at 9:21 AM Andrew Burton via CnC-List wrote:Thanks, David. 2021-09-21 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Dave,
I’ve had a 41 for four seasons now. Love this boat!
I moved up from the 34, and the difference is night and day. Roomy, powerful
and a joy to sail.
She is robustly built and survived a fall on the hard a few winters ago with
reparable damage.
Mine is the fin keeled, 8’ draft model, 3-spreader rig. Trucks upwind with just
a #3, even better with the main & a manageable 125% Genoa.
Nothing fancy, but comfy below. Cockpit is high sided and well protected. I can
single-hand in most conditions. Though to be fair, I don’t push it if it’s
blowing too hard... 25+kts.
She’s an ‘84, Hull 053, and I’m finding no signs of mast step issues. Not much
in the way of leaks and deck is solid.
Good luck in your search, I have seen a cb model around here, and there are a
few set up like mine as well. Great boats!

2021-05-14 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Maybe my experience was not typical, but it was pretty easy if you have the
required documents referred to on the USCG site.
Proof of ownership and any PO liens released then a transfer form if she is
already documented and you’re there.
Takes a while and was regular mail a few years ago, but not hard to do.

Will,

There is a 1985 Northeast 39 here in Portsmouth that is nearly the same boat as
the 41, and was completely refit. I nearly scooped it up before I took on
repairing mine.
Worth a look. It’s listed on yachtworld. I think there is room to negotiate.

Also, I’m still thinking about the #2, will contact you directly on that later.

Denatured alcohol will breakdown epoxy resin. But it may take a lot if soaking
and blotting.
Good luck.

Re: Stus-List Air draft for C&C 41 (regular production model, 1986)

2019-09-27 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Now you’ve got me wondering...
Since the mast step shoe is at cabin sole level on the transverse grid
structure, it’s well above the keel sump and associated bolts.
That said, it may still be below the waterline, but not much.
I think I’ll take some actual measurements once she is out of the water this
fall.

When my mast was removed this past Spring, they charged me by the foot, and
measured 62’. Assuming the step is at the waterline and your instruments are
under 2’ above the stick, 64’ is safe. That’s the number I go with. The
Sakonnet River Bridge in Tiverton, RI claims 64’ at high tide, and we haven’t
nicked it yet.
Although I will say that first time made me a bit nervous.

David,
I have some stanchions that did not break or bend in our incident last winter.
You are welcome to whatever is still good. I replaced all the stanchions and
bases.
One thing, though, is that they are pretty “salt-fused” in the sockets. I can
check when I get home for exactly what I have intact.

Kinda surprising as it appeared there was more of a gray tone.

Stus-List Gelcoat color

2019-04-07 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Looking for input on original gelcoat color name/number for our venerable
C&Cs.
My 41 is what I thought was white (but as my wife can attest, my color
vision leave much to be desired) however, as I put a spot of base white on
a repair, it is way off.
Does anyone know what color I'm trying to match? I get the 35 years of
elements taking their toll, but the gelcoat is pretty thick on these boats,
and I may sand out some of the patina which will put me closer to the
original color.

Stus-List Stern rail for a 41

2019-03-09 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Hello all,

Nearly 2 weeks after her tumble, I'm trying to get our 41 back together and
looking to source some parts.
Thus far it seems like we have more composite and gelcoat repair than
broken parts. As long as things work out with insurance and logistics, we
hope to make a full recovery.
Since all my stanchions and most bases were damaged, I will be replacing
all of them along with the lifelines. I found that South Shore Yacht in
Ontario may have all that I need there. The Bow rail suffered a slight
bend, but fixable. The stern rail, on the other hand... looks like it will
need a lot of work. It might be more economical to find a decent used
one. Here's where I need some help.
Any ideas? Also, would anyone know if we would be close in dimension to
any other design (even a non-C&C)? Maybe I can swap in something close.

Thanks in advance,
Chuck

excellent specimen, in my opinion, and I’d like to keep her.
I work with a great group of boatbuilders and am sure that if is possible, they
can get her right.
Best,
Chuck B

Thanks for the note, Andy. I'll anxiously wait for the wheels to get in
motion. The pain of seeing my boat nose down in the gravel is hard, having
to wait for an action plan just adds to it.

Reaching out to Rob Ball with this one... or maybe anyone who has dealt
with this kind of damage...
It was my 41 that took a nose dive into the gravel yard this week.
Two biggest areas of concern prior to her being righted and ready for a
full inspection are a stand that punctured the hull and stuck in about a
foot, and a "punch" on her nose that shows a crack that goes about 8-10
inches down and back on both sides of the bow, below the waterline.
I'm hopeful that the impalement will not be the hardest repair. On the
other hand, what structure lurks in the bow at/below the waterline that I
should be aware of?
Thanks in advance for any information you can provide. I probably won't
sleep until I have a plan of action from the yard, insurance...

Re: Stus-List mainsheet set-up

2018-06-10 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Thanks for the input Rick.
Today I added a double block at the bottom of the 2:1 and a single block at
the top on a second boom bale. I'm not sure if that effectively makes it
4:1, 3:1 or not, but the main was much easier to trim as we sailed today
in about 10-12 kts of breeze. As suggested by both you and Josh, I added a
snap shackle at the traveler so I can move the boom to the rail when at the
mooring with guests...
I totally spaced out taking some pics today as I as testing the new
arrangement. Will try to get some for more input.

Best,
Chuck

Josh,
That’s a cool setup.
I may steal elements of that and as Mike noted, I can always trim main on the
primaries.
Not having a rats nest on the cockpit floor is a benefit. And mark roundings
are easier with the 2:1, at least until we get to the last 20% or so.
Next project will be making the traveler easier to adjust from the helm as
well.
It may be as simple as flopping the fiddle blocks.
I’ll take some pix this weekend for input.

Josh,
Thanks for jumping in.

For reference, it looks like this diagram.
The traveler is on the bridge deck. The problem is the purchase. I might add a
triple at the top and move the double to the bottom. That will give me 3:1
instead. But it doesn’t solve my wanting to trim the jib on the aft winches.
Before I go buy a more traditional cascading set up like the Ronstan RP72900
4:1/8:1, I want to think it out.

Stus-List mainsheet set-up

2018-06-07 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Hi Listers,

Anyone with a C&C 41 have suggestions on a mainsheet set-up?
My new-to-me boat has a "German" mainsheet set-up that runs to the runner
winches. It's supposed to be the hot set-up but I'm not impressed.
Since I'm using a 97% r/f jib, I find tacking that alone using the runner
winches to be pretty easy, but what to do with the main? Also the 2:1
nature of the German set-up is not really that easy to trim, even with the
winches.
I'm thinking I'd like a 4:1/8:1 more traditional set-up or a reasonable
suggestion(?).
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hey All,

I have recently acquired a C&C 41 (any one interested in a 34, please
contact me!) and I would like to replace Bomar Hatch gaskets. It appears
they are all the same spec and vintage. Does anyone have a good source and
also tell me what size to order?

thanks,

Hello all,

I'm putting my C&C 34 up for sale and moving up a class or two, details on
the new (to me) boat to follow once I've fully committed. In the meantime,
I'll be glad to talk or email more with an interested party.
She's a 1978, Ontario built boat in great condition.
White Awlgrip with navy blue boot and cove stripes.
Nicely equipped, very clean below-decks (cushions re-done a few years back)
and a very reliable Yanmar 2QM20.

Asking $22,000, looking for offers.

Thanks in advance, and looking forward to my next C&C!

I broke the the cast aluminum fitting on my mast at the gooseneck as well.
South Shore Yachts had a stainless replacement for about $275 USD (if I
recall correctly) and it shipped pretty quickly.

Re: Stus-List Original Rig, (was US Watercraft receivership)

Years of racing J24s, J30s & Etchells, never thought I'd have a furler. Now a
little older, wiser and sporting a Stackpack too.

Not the fastest setup, but still finding a way to win club races.
And my wife and I can be off the mooring and sailing in minutes. Put-away is
just as quick. I am sure we use our boat many times more than those around us
just because it is so easy. No sail- folding arguments either!

Enjoy!

Re: Stus-List Bulkheads separated from cabin top (C&C 34)

2016-06-27 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Hi Andrew,

I have a similar looking issue on my 1978 C&C 34, Also have very slight
dimples in the hull at the same places. I've never sensed movement, and
thought not as much as yours, I can see that my bulkheads are not set in as
deep as they may have been at the build.
Aft sides of the bulkheads are tabbed in and I see not signs of movement
there.
Heavy back-stay, and the odd big wave also make the boat creak and/or
groan, but so far I have not felt there was a danger. My Chain-plates are
dry and solid. There are a coule of spots on the deck that need attention,
but neither are much bigger than a dinner plate.
Interested to see comments from others as well. My survey a few years ago
found nothing to fear in the hull or deck.

Re: Stus-List relocating MAIN-SHEET

2016-03-30 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Hi David,

I have the same set up on my 34. At first I hated not having all the controls
at the helm but I must say I've come to appreciate the cockpit space.
Plus, to windward, I tend to play the traveller more than the sheet, and with a
Harken traveller with cam cleats on the ends, leaving enough length on the
control lines gives me reach from the helm.
Lastly, the best thing I did for the Admiral was upgrade the mainsheet 10ST
winch to a Harken 40ST. Now she can sheet in easier in a breeze, or I can pop
up there for a quick adjust myself.
In cruise mode I set the mainsheet, lock the trav in the middle and tack single
handedly. Wifey never spills a drop.

Re: Stus-List Irgarol - reply from Interlux

2016-03-14 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Hi Listers,

For the last few years I've used the West Marine PCA Gold. The results
have been decent for my location in Swansea, MA at the top or Mount Hope
Bay.
Last season the paint went on a little tougher than usual, and the weird
thing was it seemed like a Flat finish, whereas the prior years were
shinier (as far as bottom paint goes). And out of the water it is a lot
chalkier than last few years. One more thing, it had a kinda purple tint
after cleaning some days.

Other factors:
Same paint for last 3 years.
Not much build up as I put one coat overall and 2 at waterline and leading
edges of foils At haulout, I have some bare spots (but nothing to worry
about)
I clean the bottom often, at least 2x/month and toward August and Sept-
every week.
Launch is first week of May, haul is last week of October.

Any thoughts?
West Marine's product advisers didn't have much to say other than meeting
EPA guidelines means they've had to change to formulas and that 60* at
application is on the low side. April in my neighborhood is hard to find
many days much warmer than that.

Thanks,
Chuck B

Danny,

Borden light treats some friends of mine pretty fairly. Further up the
River is Bristol Marine's Somerset yard and even further up is Shaw's.
I've heard good things about both with Shaw's the less expensive option.
Swansea, where I am, would not be able to handle your boat for the size, I
think. I draw 6' and am about the biggest sailboat there at 34'.
Good luck, if you bring it around to Mt. Hope Bay, let us know. I might be

Did you find a headsail?
There is one on CL for $200. Its a North 150%, blue sunshield for r/f.

Re: Stus-List Best Engine?

Hi Brian,

After seeing Legacy's speed with a 3GM, I feel less bad about our speed.
I've got a 1978 34 with a 2QM20 and get right around 5.5 with a Mar-Tec
folding prop, too.
I though she was under-powered, but I guess not. I try not to run
wide-open, so I can only guess we'd get to 6kts.
Good news she sips diesel fuel.

I have an old 135% for my C&C 34 that has not seen daylight in a few years

Derek,

I had a similar problem starting this season, found it was a loose ground
wire on the alternator bracket. I had taken the alternator off when I was

There are some really smart guys on the list, with lots of good

Hi Guys,

Saw this on the Providence (RI) craiglist:

Might be worth a look. I though of snagging it as a long-term project, but
I'm sure the Admiral would have me flogged (again).

Re: Stus-List C&C 34 rig tune

2015-05-10 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Hi Dwight,

We did some damage over the years. On the J24, I was a fanatic, kept a
log... tuned every week/regatta for conditions, all that stuff. Same on
the J30, but with this boat, I'm looking at some pieces I'm not used to and
figuring it out as I go. Having a baseline is what I was looking for. So I
borrowed a couple big bodies and went up the rig to check thing s out for
myself.
Seems like 1000/1000 on the D1/V1 was a decent start. The D2 is just
barely registering on the gauge, and the V2 is loaded by the V1, with no
adjustment available.
I went sailing yesterday and today (though it was blowing hard today) and
made some adjustments - 1300/1200 and it felt pretty good. Lee shrouds
soft, but not slack until it really kicked up.
Still experimenting, and expecting a new 135% in a few weeks, so I'll be
starting all over again, I suppose.

Thanks for the input from the listers. Every bit helps. After retiring
from racing for a decade +, I'm thinking I'm ready to go back at it, but at
a different pace than before... guess that comes with age.

Best to all,

Re: Stus-List C&C 34 rig tune

2015-05-09 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Thanks, Rob.
I was up there this morning and found the D2s to be even, registering 2-3 on
the gauge. That sound about where you said.
The uppers (V2) were a bit higher on one side than the other, but that tension
is controlled at deck level. And at deck level both sides are even. It may have
been my weight causing the issue, and 2 big guys heeling the boat a touch.
I'm going to start at 1300 on the outside (uppers) and the same on the lowers
and sail around to get it right.
It always seemed the leeward shrouds were looser on starboard tack. Not sure
why.

Thanks for the help!
Chuck

Re: Stus-List C&C 34 rig tune

2015-05-08 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Hi John,
It does help for the process. Since my boat is in the water Already, with the
stick up, do you set the upper pair (v2 & d2?) at a specific tension? While
Sailing I won't be able to adjust above the spreaders so a pre-set number would
be great.

And at no time should I let the lowers get "floppy" once I've settled in,
right?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Stus-List New instruments?

2015-03-26 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Hi Fred,

Thanks for both the input and the offer. I get what you are saying,
regarding function. And I'll give that some thought.
I like the analog look for wind, just a sucker for a more classic look.
Plus I've got space to fill if I take out the old stuff, so extra displays
are ok. And my lovely bride wouldn't change the info by leaning up against
it, like she always does now.
I guess I've got some figuring to do... Almost April, then one month to
splash.

Thanks,

They've been stuck for 2 season. It didn't bother me so much at first, we
never had much electronics on the J24, J30 and Etchells I was racing in the
past. But I decided this is the year to get it right. I'll be able to
find help, but wanted to minimize the number of times I have to ask friends
to lug my butt up there.
Plus, I can't help lust after some new stuff.

Bill,

What are you sapping out to?
And what are you hoping to get for the masthead unit? Maybe I'll delay
another season...

Re: Stus-List New instruments?

Hi Edd, Joel,

Thanks for the info. It occurred to me that I meant the i50/i60 bundle
(wired). I was waffling about the wireless, but since I tend to leave the
dodger up, I was concerned about there being enough sunlight to keep the
solar up.
Also, at some point I'll probably get back to racing, and I like the analog
reading on the i60 better.

So let's start over... remarks about the i50/i60 bundle, please?

Thanks,

Stus-List New instruments?

2015-03-26 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
Hi Listers,

I've got KVH Quadro instruments that are working properly, with the
exception of Wind Speed. The darn cups seem frozen and my wife can't seem
to haul me up the mast. Regardless, I'm assuming the bearing is toast or
worse, and I'm not sure it is worth investing more money in such old
technology.
So the question is, while thinking about Defender's sale this weekend,
should I swap out to a new Raymarine T-108 bundle? How tough is the
install?
And lastly, is there a market for the KVH stuff to offset the cost of the
new stuff? I've got a brain, 2 displays and the keypad, plus the
aforementioned masthead unit (anemometer not functioning)

Thanks for any advice,

Re: Stus-List Restoring Grip to Winches

2015-03-20 Thread Chuck Borge via CnC-List
I had a set of aluminum Enkes knurled at a friend's machine shop once.
They were on my J-24, and since I couldn't afford new winches (rather put
the money in sails) if figured what the heck. they held up ok for a few
seasons, but not having been re-anodized, they gave up some grip over time.

Lazy-jacks, Stackpack (Doyle sails), Mack Pack...
I'm having my Stackpack replaced this winter, makes life a lot easier when
