However, Apple has warned investors and financial analysts to expect profit margins to drop soon. There is speculation that this will be due to some price drops coming on computer systems. Apple tends to release system bumps or changes at the end of the year, often actually in January at Macworld Expo. I'm ready to get my Intel Mac; my 8 year old and 4 year old G4 systems are creaking for the work I do now. If I find a good deal, I may buy now, but I'm tempted to wait at least until Macworld and see if anything changes. Re: [CGUYS] I-pod Touch good replacement for PDA ?
mike sez: >I haven't poked around on both a lot, but isn't it more like the ipod touch >is an iphone without the phone? Are there any other differences major or >minor? Yes, the iPod Touch is basically an iPhone without the phone bits. It has WiFi connectivity, so one can do all the internet stuff from mail to web surfing and more if you're in the presence of a wireless network. (The iPhone has WiFi There are services around to use for connecting to messengers (from iChat to MSN service). The main differences I know of: No camera No external speaker(s) No microphone The iPod Touch is also slightly thinner, and I've read some think the screen isn't comparable to the iPhone (blacks are not rendered as well and it feels different). Lastly there is still debate over whether the iPod Touch has Bluetooth or not. Some say it is in there but disabled, some say no. I figure if it is in there, it's disabled until they work out using stereo Bluetooth headphones with it, which is something an iPod user would want more than an iPhone user might. -- Michael Lewis Off Balance Productions [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.offbalance.com * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] I-pod Touch good replacement for PDA ?
John Duncan Yoyo sez: >> An I-pod touch is a MP3 player with extras, >> >> A Palm is a PDA Personal Data Assistant that keeps data like calendars >> appointments etc. Its main function is keeping data for you, not MP3 >> playing. Not exactly right. The iPod Touch can sync with Address Book and iCal just like the iPhone can. Entry can be made into the calendar and contacts, too, for sync to your comptuer. Also, it can be used with MobileMe for the email, calendar, addressbook pushing and all. See <http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/features.html#calendar> and . If you're in an enterprise setting using MS Exchange, there is this: . The iPodTouch can access the App Store, as well, and there are tons of apps ready for use, many free or very low cost. More apps are being added daily. If you find a used iPod Touch at a good price, updating it to 2.0 software so it can use the App store is just $20. Someone asked in another email if there was a writing application. See as examples: <http://textguruapp.com/> ($4.99) <http://magicpad.proximi.com/> ($3.99) So, the answer as to whether the iPhone/iPod Touch can be a replacement for a Palm/other PDA device is yes and no. It really depends on what you need, how you work, etc. A writing application on a Palm/other PDA might do something the iPod one does not and vice versa. One would have to try it out, most likely, to know if one or the other works the way you like to work. Stop by an Apple Store and give one a try. Talk to the employees there to see if you can try out certain apps (several have demo modes); they reset the computers and everything each night or week as far as I know. To say the iPod Touch is an MP3 player with extras really does not do justice to what those "extras" are. -- Michael Lewis Off Balance Productions [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.offbalance.com * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

I came a bit late to this, but i don't think anyone has just suggested dropping the video clips onto iMovie? If you have a Mac and iMovie, you should be able to drop any clip that Quicktime can play onto iMovie's clip pane. It'll convert the clip to DV, stretching it as need to fit the standard ratio window -- or so it has for the times I've used it. Then you can put the clips together, arrange them, edit them, add chapter markers, and then Share to iDVD to make your DVD that will play in a TV DVD player. I've used this for various filetypes, even YouTube videos I've snagged. (Okay, I admit I've forgotten if I converted the .flv file to something else first before dropping on iMovie. I know I've dropped .wmv and .mov and other files on it.) The quality, of course, leaves a lot to be desired once you've grabbed a web video, converted and stretched it, but it's not unwatchable... usually. :) -- Michael Lewis Off Balance Productions [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.offbalance.com * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

gerald sez: >is >there an easy way to clean the dupes? i can see them, but do not want >to go in and delete each one individually. > This site has a pretty good procedure for handling duplicates when youhave time and a small problem: <http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/duplicates/index.shtml> However, since you know these are dupes of files you had and not possibly the same song from different albums (like a regular and a live version), you would probably like to sort out the MP3 or AAC files and just delete those. Here is how: 1. Select your music library ("Music" under "Library" on the left column). 2. In the right window, click "Kind." This will sort your music files by the type they are. 3. Decide if you want to keep your MP3 files or your AAC files. Remember that anything you might have purchased at the regular 99 cent cost from iTunes Music Store will be "Protected AAC" -- but these should show up grouped separately from "AAC Audio File". 4. Select the first song in the list of the type you want to delete. For example, select the first "MPEG Audio File" if those are going. 5. Scroll down to the last of that file type in the list and hold the SHIFT key while selecting it. This should select all of the files between it and the first one you selected. 6. Right-Click on the selected files and choose "Delete" or "Move to Trash" or whatever it is from the pop-up menu. 7. After it is done, scroll through your list and verify everything looks good before you empty that trash can/recycle bin! If your iTunes doesn't show "Kind" in the right-hand part of the window, you can turn on that column by choosing View-->View Options and checking "Kind" in the list that comes up. Also, remember you can drag the columns into an order you prefer -- I moved my Kind column to the 4th column since it's important for me as I make my own music and have AAC or MP3 depending on what I want to send to people. Re: [CGUYS] Macbook pwned...again
You people and your anti-mac zealotry. The fact the MacBook Air was "hacked" first is only because people at the event didn't bother hacking the other systems. Other articles quote attendees saying so. They wanted to get the Mac because that's where the cred and kudos lie. Any script kiddy can jack up a Windows box. Linux is tougher, as well as the Mac. In fact, they had to relax the rules of the contest after no one got into any of the systems via network. Once he could direct organizers to a website, Miller put into place things he had been working on for a month or more -- things he could have told Apple about long ago but he doesn't care about security. He wants hacker fame and free money and equipment. Even if he believed Apple never plugs security holes, he could have told them and still done this since lazy ol' Apple wouldn't have plugged it; but he didn't, because he wanted his name in the news and a free computer. These people are schmucks. Even automated calls usually provide a number to press if you do not wish to receive any more calls from them, or they have an option to talk to a human at which point you can ask them to remove you from their list. My elderly mother was receiving several calls a week from questionable companies offering all sorts of things for older people (supplemental insurance of questionable value, services she already gets through other sources, warranty "deals" on things that are well beyond the need to be warranteed, etc.). I started answering the phone and telling them to bug off since she had some trouble navigating their menus or often felt she had to apologize and such when talking to them. But, hey, if that's how you feel you need to discuss something, then go right ahead. The point about Macs being environmentally unfriendly is a much better attempt, by the way. But then, most computers are; I have yet to see a computer made up of mulchable products. There is this, though: <http://www.apple.com/environment/> Among the info there: -- Apple was the first computer manufacturer to entirely replace CRT displays with LCDs. -- Apple plans to completely eliminate use of PVCs and BFRs bythe end of 2008 -- All Apple computers have earned the Energy Star rating since 2001. -- Apple phased out lead in batteries five years before the 1996 European battery directive took effect. -- Macbook Pros now have mercury-free backlit displays ...and more. Much was in place even before GreenPeace began making a stink a year or so ago. -- Michael Lewis Off Balance Productions [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.offbalance.com * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? You'll need to first convert the DVD using another tool. I've used the following: Handbrake: Free, open-source, but not necessarily easy to use (there have been changes to the current version 0.9.1 since the v0.8.5 I have used, so the interface may be better now, if still a bit techie) <http://handbrake.fr/> Roxio's Popcorn: Costs $49.99, but has a fairly intuitive interface and can be used for a lot more conversion duties easily <http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/popcorn/standard/overview.html> Remember that DVD video is compressed from the original. So when you convert it and then edit it, if you then put it back on a DVD it'll be compressed again and may lose quality further. Just go to Preferences, and click the Advanced icon/button and then the Import tab. Choose Apple Lossless as the import method. Close preferences and then right-click (control- click) any AIFF song in your library. From the pop-up menu you can select to convert the file to wht you have selected for import -- Apple Lossless in this case. You may find it useful to turn on "Kind" in the library's info bar. If it isn't on, just right-click next to "Name" or something and select "kind" from the pop-up menu. You'll be able to see at a glance what kind of files the songs are (MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, etc.). It'll make it easy to sort and remove the AIFF files you've converted, too. You will see about 60% reduction in filesize by using Apple Lossless. According to some audiophile sites my Google searches found, there is no appreciable sound quality loss. Yeah, I think they took the actual power button off the keyboard and provided one with a modifier key because people were complaining about accidentally hitting the key and having to dismiss the shutdown dialog. They also had people mention the media eject key getting pressed accidentally, so now you have to hold it down a short bit before it ejects. I know many here don't think people should leave their computers on all the time, but many do mainly due to the advancements in energy savings, and having instant-on access can be helpful to a lot of people. Most photographers feel they're charging for their >expertise & skills Exactly. It took me a long time to realize this. It probably is what put me in the most trouble. For the longest time I would charge portions of an hour if the job was a quickie, and just as quickly I was missing paying my bills. Heh heh. Once I began charging a two-hour minimum to account for driving time (time spent on the road that I can't be working with another client) and prep time (if I have to download any update files, etc. before I go), I found a number of things happened. One, I stopped grumbling so much about the terrible traffic around here. That, of course leads to a much better mood when I arrive. :) Also, my clients began to avail themselves of that two hours if what I was there to do didn't fill it, which means they asked more questions, took more notes, and learned a lot more. Sometimes I was able to write up instruction sheets for whatever I did while I was there. So, basically, while I did it to cover drive time, the minimum is that expertise and skills bit really. A few that come to mind might be: Seeing/Voiceover: a number of things that will speak text to him. You can turn off all the navigation ones and leave on, for example, just speaking text his mouse is hovering over. Seeing/Zoom: turn this on. If you go to the Keyboard & Mouse panel, you can click the checkbox to Zoom using the scroll wheel while holding a key you choose (I have selected Control). IT works whether or not Zoom is turned on in Universal Access. Mouse: You can change the mouse cursor size here so he can see the mouse pointer better if necessary. Also, ensure that he knows he can highlight text in most programs (Mail, Safari, etc.) then go to the menu under: Program Name > Services > Speech > Start Speaking Text The computer will read the highlighted text to him. It may be possible to get some software (I can help you look some up if you want) to assign Start Speaking Text and Stop Speaking Text to a function key which you could label for him. Also, I would suggest getting a USB headset which he could use to help hear with. Re: [CGUYS] Am I a spammer?
Charlie Wilson sez: >I am concerned that some of my e-mail is being identified as spam. Along with what Tony said, I have a problem where my provider is flagged as a spammer. Why? Because a lot of the people that use my provider simply forward their email from there automatically to their AOL accounts. AOL sees a bunch of spam coming in and assumes it is coming from my provider rather than actually being forwarded from an email account to one of their customers and flags the provider as a spammer. Then, I can't send email to my clients that have AOL accounts. AOL puts them on a blacklist, and then I can't send mail to Comcast and a couple others that use the black list. My provider has argued with AOL tons of times but AOL refuses to change their scripts that check incoming email. And the saddest thing is I have to contact these clients and the problem is expanding to other providers who don't care but are too big to ignore -- so I'm probably going to have to move my email account and penalize my provider who really is doing nothing wrong. Short of changing your email to a provider that has a special relationship with the providers you need to contact, all you can do is wait until your provider gets off the black list. You could yell at your provider, and if they are kicking off real spammers or handling people who have had their computers compromised, they can't do much against the big companies. Re: [CGUYS] How do I compress MPG files
Paula Minor sez: >> > >Michael, I used iMovie and imported my mpg movie into it with no >problem and it plays but the sound is missing. For anyone watching this thread, I'd just like to pass on that we fixed Paula's sound issue. Both she and I located a free application called MPEG StreamClip. <http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html> iMovie does not import the soundtracks of some MPEG 1 or MPEG 2 movies (insert a whole bunch of mumbo jumbo about sound file types, muxed and demuxed, and other stuff here :) ). StreamClip will convert movies to other file types. So, in this case, Paula converted the MPEG to Digital Video (DV), brought it into iMovie, and then used the Share command to save it with better compression so she could get it up on YouTube under the 100MB filesize limit. I'll let Paul tell more about the process as well as provide the link to the movie she worked on. :) -- Michael Lewis Off Balance Productions [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.offbalance.com * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? I choose to listen to Vint Cerf, undisputed as one of the Founding Fathers of the Internet who said of Al Gore while defending him from that false "I invented the Internet" meme: "VP Gore was the first or surely among the first of the members of Congress to become a strong supporter of advanced networking while he served as Senator. As far back as 1986, he was holding hearings on this subject (supercomputing, fiber networks...) and asking about their promise and what could be done to realize them. Bob Kahn, with whom I worked to develop the Internet design in 1973, participated in several hearings held by then-Senator Gore and I recall that Bob introduced the term 'information infrastructure' in one hearing in 1986. It was clear that as a Senator and now as Vice President, Gore has made it a point to be as well-informed as possible on technology and issues that surround it." Source: Internet archive of mids.org: <http://web.archive.org/web/ 2125065813/http://www.mids.org/mn/904/vcerf.html> Gore had much to do with legislation that did, according to Cerf, build the Internet. "It is true, though, that Gore was popularizing the term 'information superhighway' in the early 1990s (although he did not, as is often claimed by others, coin the phrase himself) when few people outside academia or the computer/defense industries had heard of the Internet, and he sponsored the 1988 National High-Performance Computer Act (which established a national computing plan and helped link universities and libraries via a shared network) and cosponsored the Information Infrastructure and Technology Act of 1992 (which opened the Internet to commercial traffic). "In May 2005, the organizers of the Webby Awards for online achievements honored Al Gore with a lifetime achievement award for three decades of contributions to the Internet. 'He is indeed due some thanks and consideration for his early contributions,' said Vint Cerf." -- Source: Snopes <http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.asp> -- Michael Lewis Off Balance Productions [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.offbalance.com * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail?
