[Cooker] i810
Hi The installation of X for i810 card fails miserably both for 3.3.6 and 4.0. It detects the card, then trying to test the configuration is says 'some error occurred'. During configuration it cannot give me more resolution/depth combinations, which I know are valid. I guess that it forgets to load a special kernel module 'agpgart.o'. Also it would be great if the list of monitors contained some popular ones, like recent ViewSonics, its list seems to be obsolete. Alexander
[Cooker] Mandrake 7.1 issues
Just tried out the new beta and here are my observations: The main install screen is too big. I had to resize it with my monitor. When asking "Are you sure you are an expert?" it shouldn't say "...make powerfull but dangerous things here" but "...customize powerfull but dangerous things here" or "...make powerfull but dangerous decisions here". Is it supposed to highlight grub and lilo for choosing a bootloader? Do they work together or are they mutually exclusive? "Unable to get hdlist-crypto.cz2" when trying to download crypto stuff. Should that be ".bz2" maybe? When testing X in the install, it starts the X server ok (I'm assuming it was using XFree 4.0), but when I click that it's ok, it doesn't put me back into the original video mode. Using an ATI Xpert98 video card here (Mach64). On the other hand, I *really* like the new installer. A lot nicer than the one in 7.0, good work! And I like the new GNOME splash screen. But you need to put in that weather applet like helix gnome has (dunno what it's called, kweather maybe?). Sorry... here it says GNOME Weather. I live by this thing! So far so good. Haven't had a chance to really play with it yet, but I like what I see, minus the few buglets. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED], OpenPGP key available on www.keyserver.net Freezer Burn BBS: telnet://bbs.freezer-burn.org . I see there has been another major unannounced update to the 7.1 beta tree on aarnet, the third release by my count, yet the VERSION file has remained at April 21. Linux-Mandrake Hydrogen (2421) Please can we make sure that every update batch also updates this file, does not occur more often than daily, and that this VERSION string is mentioned in all beta test reports so that the problem can be tied back positively to a specific release and RPM version? -- Regards, Ron. [Cooker] Bugs in 7.1 install
Hi, I tried installing 7.1 and failed to get it to work. Try #1. I already have Mandrake 7.0 installed, so I decided to install the beta on another partition(i have a 27Gig 7200RPM IDE Maxtor on a K7M MB with an onboard UDMA 66). The drive partitioned fine but the installer refused to proceed with mesages("Mount point /dev/hda10 does not exist) or something of that sort. No matter what I did, nothing seemed to work Try #2 I decided to updgrade so I choose a Custom installation class, indicated my root partion and installed. I picked HD optimisation and continued. The upgrade took me 6 hours(thats ridiculous on an Athlon 600) and after that the font server refused to work. Get free email and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=1

I did this on 7.0 (this is off the top of my head, details are fuzzy) You need to untar the tar file (rpm does not work. if you read the README, it says to do something like make SYSINCLUDE=/usr/src/linux/include do that, with the SYSINCLUDE= to the above edit the install.sh file, and comment out the section that does the "make" then run the install.sh file YMMV Allen u On Sat, Apr 29, 2000 at 12:40:02AM +0200, Markus Weimer rambled a bit about: > Hi! > > just installed the 7.1beta for testing XFree 4. [Cooker] What's happened to Gnome ?
Help ! I've just installed several files from the cooker, including things like rootfiles, mandrake_desk etc. On launching Gnome I find that every application, that has a tree, is suffering from the following : The tree item text is in a small bold font, Every tree item has a thin grey line along its top and bottom edge. All Gnome apps. seem to be using the small bold font in lists, trees and menus. However only trees appear to be bounded by thin grey lines. This even happens when running a Gnome app. in KDE. I cannot find the file(s) / utility that allows font setting and / or 'tree looks' in Gnome, I assume it was overwritten by one of the cooker files I downloaded last night Please tell me how to get the nice looking Gnome desktop back again ! Thanks, Owen

Re: [Cooker] Megaraid not found
I had to relinquish the machine to other testing... It has an AIC7xxx SCSI controller for its two CD-R drives and SCSI tape drive. The 5 18GB RAID array is on a MegaRAID controller. It boots from floppy (using the cdrom.img) and scans the AIC7xxx, finds both CD-R drives and asks which one to install from. It goes into stage two and asks whether I have any other SCSI controllers besides the AIC7xxx, and I select the MegaRAID. I only see the "megaraid.o" related message for an instant... then I can't find it again on any virtual console. Sorry I couldn't get more detail... [Cooker] installkernel doesn't like Grub
I just installed the latest mdk kernel. It inserted the following entry in my Grub menu.lst: title kernel-2.2.15-0.28mdk kernel (hd0,3)/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.15-0.28mdk root=/dev/hda4 I think this is wrong. hd0,3 is my root partition. But vmlinuz-* is located on my boot partition, which is hd0,0. The path (hd0,3)/boot/ will not function because the boot partition isn't mounted under (hd0,3)/ at this time. The correct entry should look like title kernel-2.2.15-0.28mdk kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz-2.2.15-0.28mdk root=/dev/hda4 ~A.

Some of the modules that are automatically loaded from a xf86config generated XF86Config file were missing in the XFdrake gernerated config file. So what is the effect of this? Enlightment for example won't start because of missing functionality of X11 when using the XFdrake gernerated configuration. My xf86config gernerated module section look like ## Section "Module" # This loads the DBE extension module. Load"dbe" # Double buffer extension # This loads the miscellaneous extensions module, and disables # initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module. [Cooker] 7.1 install does not deliver a usable system
>From your mirror at aarnet I have so far attempted two 7.1 beta installs on two different machines, each of which already has a 100% running Mandrake 7.0-2 partition. Both are Custom, install, Development. The first delivered an unacceptable result, the second crashed during install. Details below: 1. Was done a couple of days ago. This is a gateway machine with two NICs. The other machine on the LAN could not be pinged after install completed. /etc/hosts is NOT set up by the install. Taking this into account, a ping to the actual IP address was tried and also failed. "An error occurred" (without bothering to say what error) during setup of X which could not be overcome. Video card is bog standard Matrox G200, monitor Hyundai 17B+. Conclusion: Unacceptable. 2. This was done just now from the aarnet mirror, which had been updated by some 100 or so replacement RPMs, etc. 20 minutes in, immediately after the installation of kdebase-1.1.2-53mdk.i586.rpm a small dialog popped up File: missing header file. This dialog is bad because it shows the names of neither the RPM nor the missing file. It was impossible to proceed. Conclusion: Mandrake had not tested install against the updated beta. Shockingly, no announcement to beta testers had been made that the beta was to be, and had been, updated. -- Regards, Ron. [AU] - sent by Linux.
[Cooker] (MDK7-Alpha) Minor bugs installing, packages that should be there.
I just installed Mandrake 7.0 for Alpha, and here's a list of what's been wrong: * DiskDrake crashed when I clicked on the empty space on the raid device to create a partition, saying "cannot read 'num_cyls' on an unblessed reference" or something to that effect (I now wish I had paid more attention). The MD device was made of two, approximately 2GB partitions, one each on /dev/sdb1 and on /dev/sdc1, or both on /dev/sdb5 and /dev/sdc5 (which are DiskDrake's defaults, for some reason, always creating an extended partition even when there is no primary) * I received a warning of some sort about space ("A full install needs 1302mb, but that's okay"), or something to that effect. * I installed a bunch of packages that I felt were missing, mostly from RedHat 6.2, if not, from RedHat Powertools 6.2 or HelixCode * sudo * krb5-* * krbafs-* * pam-0.72-6 * pam_krb5-1-7 * mpg123-0.59r-4 * rpm-*-3.0.4-0.48 * smpeg-*-0.3.1-2 * all the HelixCode GNOME stuff, which, by the way, rocks. * gob, from the author, so their gnome-pilot RPM ould build. * mikmod-3.1.6-6 from RedHat, because the Helix XMMS won't build against the mandrake mikmod/libmikmod packages * sound was never configured (I have a nice simple AD 1848 card, too... nice and easy to find), so I installed, from RedHat 6.2: * awesfx-0.4.3a-3 * sndconfig-0.44-1 * playmidi-2.4-9 All in all, fairly painless install... no "problems" (ie: can't boot), just the weirdness with the hard drives was the big one (I just made the raid array after install, then moved /home to it)... Now to find SSL and SSH SRPMs that will actually build on an alpha... Oh, and just a note... the fact that Postfix is installed by default over Sendmail is a stroke of genius. Thank you. (I always download it and install it on my RedHat systems, this first shot at Mandrake was great! It's the way things "Should be done" mostly) Rick Stewart

[Cooker] xinitrc and kernel packages
Hi guys, Some points about the two packages: xinitrc - Out of sync with the WindowMaker package again. WindowMaker has been moved back to /usr/X11R6/bin, but RunWM expects it in /usr/bin. kernel - Is there no way to remove dependencies from packages that currently require this? In the pre-install perhaps? Or perhaps creating a dummy package set that fools other RPMs? Some of use are not using the Mandrake kernels, I'm on 2.3.99-pre6 series and pretty much can't go back to 2.2.x without some major work. I'd like to dump the Mandrake kernel packages, but I can't without hacking a bunch of spec files. Just some thoughts. [Cooker] Missing desktop icons in Gmc (GNOME)
Hi, I downloaded the ISOs for Hydrogen and updated my installation to the latest packages. The desktop icons in GNOME are still showing the default bare icons even after removing the .gnome-desktop directory and restarting Gmc. Is this being worked on? Regards, Michèl Salim
[Cooker] (MDK7-USPARC) undefined symbol in libreadline -> can't exec SWAT
I've just installed Mandrake 7.0/USparc on a Sun Ultra 1... (The install from CD-ROM didn't work -problem already reported- and I completed the install from HTTP instead). Just after that, I wanted to test Samba as usual, so I configured inetd to run SWAT but... SWAT didn't work. When I try to exec the binary "by hand" I get : [root@merlin /etc]# /usr/sbin/swat /usr/sbin/swat: error in loading shared libraries: /lib/libreadline.so.3: undefined symbol: BC What do you think ? Sébastien. PS : same problem in /usr/bin/make_smbcodepage (this cause a post-exec script in the Samba package to fail with /usr/bin/make_smbcodepage: error in loading shared libraries: /lib/libreadline.so.3: undefined symbol: BC ) -- Sébastien DELILLE [AUXICAD Paris] Tél. +33-1-40-83-34-34 Fax +33-1-40-83-34-30 http://www.auxicad.fr/
