Yep,
Boot with kernel-2.4.21.0.pre4.1mdk and loop.o can be inserted.
I will keep it preciously because modprobe loop also fails with
kernel-2.4.21.0.pre4.3mdk.

That did not work for me.
Modprobe loop gives GPL and undefined errors in the pre4-2 kernel.

I was able to successfully install the pre4-3 kernel by booting to an
old kernel and then installing the pre4-3.

[Cooker] wireless on dell c400

2003-02-05 Thread Todd Anderson
wireless on my c400 laptop has worked since mdk8 right up until 9.1 beta2.

in beta 2 the wireless card (which has always used the wavelan driver)
seemed to be recognized, which is not happening in beta3.

Is there any information I can submit to be more helpful? I tried going back
to v9.0 wireless tools, and changing modules in /etc/modules.conf.

When one tried to install via ftp, drakx asks for a username and
password for the server. When one installs via http, it doesn't. I
can't use it to access the mirrors. (mandrake.redbox.cz for example),
so I just assumed it was a login problem or something.

Can YOU http install from one of the public mirrors?

But you see, it's not the password that's encrypted. It looks like
something has mistaken aacton as the password, and actually
[EMAIL PROTECTED] is the password.

Maybe my example is confusing. Just do an ftp install, then try to use
urpmi right away. It doesn't work. I think it should. If for no other
reason, it would look professional.

[Cooker] another drakx report

2003-02-05 Thread Austin Acton
Pixel et. al.,
I just did a clean install to fix my gnome mess. Saw many wonderful
improvements, and a few more problems.

Good: soundcard/soundsystem choice
(thanks for that, the linux-audio list will be happier)
Bad: doesn't work as well as draksound does (yet?)
Details: It doesn't explain that the default is the oss driver, and that
the alternative driver is alsa. The alternative driver suggested to me
just showed up as snd(), but when I went to the list of drivers, it was
already sitting on the right one, snd-cmipci.

Good: many BACK buttons now go back
Bad: some don't
Detail: at 'do you want to configure a printer' select YES. On the next
screen, select BACK. It goes directly to the summary page. That's not
back. That's more like cancel.

Good: ftp install works perfectly, as always
Bad: http install doesn't ask for a username, or doesn't default to
anonymous:[EMAIL PROTECTED], so I can't use http install on redbox.cz
Detail: I think it's always been like this, but http would be nice, and
this has two easy solutions: default to anonymous, or ask

Bad: network install doesn't properly configure urpmi database
Detail: this has been a problem for many versions. I don't see why this
can't work. I just installed from an ftp site, urpmi should be setup to
use that in the future. The problem is that I logged in with
username: anonymous
passwork: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and uprmi gets setup for
ftp://anonymous:[EMAIL PROTECTED]@mandrake.redbox.cz/..
I know it's nice to hide the password, but it's also stupid to have to
urpmi.remove that, and then urpmi.addmedia it right back.

Anyway, thanks for listening to my previous reports!

_libdir should follow _prefix, but it's been set to

%_libdir/usr/%{_lib}

which causes all locally build libraries to install in
/usr/lib, which is wrong when I want /usr/local/lib.

This can be fixed by setting

%_libdir%{_prefix}/%{_lib}

and

%__os_install_post\
/usr/lib/rpm/brp-mandrake \
%{nil}

This used to work in Mandrake 8.0 just fine, but broke in 9.0.

Thanks

P.S.: Mandrake 9.0 shipped with rpm-4.0.4-19mdk, which isn't
in your version list on the form. So, I chose the
current version.

Stupid. All the better to facilitate brain slips when setting mount
points on multiple disks with multiple partitions. It was better before,
with a different color for HPFS and FAT. Even better, each common type
should be a different color: FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, HPFS (it is different -
the installer could look at the partition boot record and see which is
which), and JFS (the senior IBM variety, not *nix).

Passing acpi=off at the install bootprompt solved this problem. No idea
why. Why would one want acpi for the install? And how would one work
this out other than by trial and error and experience of typical

Second drive is on the HPT372. So the HPT372 shouldn't really matter at

Incidentally, installation of 9.0 also fails, because the system claims

Nor does passing ide=nodma or hdc=ide-cd.

Don't know if this is related to the original bug report, but the HPT372
seems to be trouble. We also cannot get hde running with a vanilla

2.4.21-pre4-ac1, in the hope the ac patch will help.

the only way i know this could happen is: ntfsresize couldn't resize
the partition and so diskdrake proposed a *destructive* resizing.
Afterwards, partition being marked as unformatted, it wants to format
it.

I'm going to:
- unset mount point after a destructive resize
- disallow choosing a mount point for a unformatted ntfs partition

@resolution=wontfix

- blue is used for microsoft partitions
- HPFS and NTFS use the same id... and NTFS will account for more than
90% of the partitions using this id... so "NTFS" is displayed instead of
"HPFS/NTFS"

Try with "urpmi" to install it from command-line to double-check,

Nope, sorry. wavelan_cs already existed in previous kernels together with
wvlan_cs and changing pcmcia/config to load wavelan_cs results in many error
messages and a nasty register dump after removing the card... so it seems that
wvlan_cs is really missing?!

Incidentally, I cannot "make menuconfig" on standard kernel source

It appears that the kernel source is not on the ISO images. Why? Where

Because they don't. You might as well ask why bash doesn't create
~/.bash_profile and ~/.bashrc the first time you run it. Or why every
program that uses ~/tmp doesn't create it first.

You're adding four directories: ~/Maildir/{cur,new,tmp}. Many programs
use Maildir now, not just qmail. I've gotten around this in the past
with adding this stuff to /etc/skel via my qmail rpms, but this doesn't
help users that exist prior to installing the qmail rpm... an admin
still has to add all these dirs themself.

I don't think it's unrealistic to add. If nothing else, it's extremely
simple for a user to remove if they don't want it (rm -rf ~/Maildir).

Alternatively, we could configure postfix out of the box to use
Maildirs instead of mboxes... Maildirs are far more reliable than
traditional mboxes anyways. People use journalling filesystems now to
prevent fs corruption, but what happens with mail corruption? If
/var/spool/mail/username is corrupt, all the mail in it is useless. At
least with Maildir, each message is it's own file; one corrupt file
doesn't corrupt the entire folder.

Don't dismiss this out of hand just because djb invented it... =) The
only MTA I know of that doesn't support Maildir is sendmail, and I
could be wrong. postfix, qmail, exim... they all can use Maildirs.

I just uploaded to ftp.linux-mandrake.com/incoming the following package:

cyrus-imapd-2.1.12-1mdk.src.rpm

Since the incoming directory isn't world readable, it is also available at

with release notes and binary packages.

cyrus-imapd-2.1.12-1mdk.src.rpm
---
URL : http://asg.web.cmu.edu/cyrus/imapd/
Summary : A high-performance mail store with IMAP and POP3 support.
Description :
The Cyrus IMAP Server is a scaleable enterprise mail system designed for
use from small to large enterprise environments using standards-based
technologies.

A full Cyrus IMAP implementation allows a seamless mail and bulletin
board environment to be set up across multiple servers. It differs from
other IMAP server implementations in that it is run on "sealed" servers,
where users are not normally permitted to log in. The mailbox database
is stored in parts of the filesystem that are private to the Cyrus IMAP
system. All user access to mail is through software using the IMAP,
POP3, or KPOP protocols. TLSv1 and SSL are supported for security.

I also tried using the "blank.img" boot image and puting my own kernel
onto it, but that failed too because I compile both my network drivers
and isofs into the kernel. The installer tries to load the modules,
fails and the installation aborts. What puzzles me is why the "hd.img"
also fails for the same reason.

However, thanks to a few suggestions not on the list, I have managed to
get a non-graphical "text" install working with options:

noapic acpi=off mem=nopentium

The normal graphical install still results in a kernel crash. I wonder
if it is possible for the installer to detect Athlons and apply these
options automatically. It would make life much easier.

I have now got the Desktop working with the standard nv driver. Thanks
again to those who helped.

via procmail by default, procmail is configured to deliver to mbox by

Should other packages own files under /etc/skel? Or should this be handled

When installing on a computer with an existing NTFS partition, DiskDrake allows me to
resize
the NTFS partition , but when continuing it tries to format the partition to NTFS ,
fails to do that
("don't know how to format to NTFS") and then returns to the previous screen with the

I found to
continue the installation was to remove the NTFS partition entirely.
I haven't checked what happens if I don't do anything to the existing NTFS partition
and install
to a different disk or an empty space on the same drive (I don't have any of those)

[Cooker] about missing devices at boot time

2003-02-05 Thread jean-sébastien HUBERT
Hi everyone,

Just an idea:
When for exemple you remove a device like a hard disk without remove the line in
/etc/fstab and the flag "mount at boot time" is avaible, the system don't boot
completely
and ask for root password to "repair" (remove the line in /etc/fstab) the system.
But, for a newbie user ... I think it's very hard to know what to do (use vi, remove
the
line in /etc/fstab and reboot)

Why, for exemple, booting completely the system (if /boot /etc /usr are avaible..) ???

Maybe you still don't want to add these, but remember Maildir isn't just a
qmail issue:

courier-imap must use Maildir, and postfix can use Maildir. You do support

b) we have a script in place to allow 1.4 and 1.6 to co-exist don't we?

I have to connect my machine manually at each new startup. All the services

It seems to be related to your new feature: "Hot plugging of network interfaces".

But..., according to the announcement for the LM9.0
kernel-2.4.19.24mdk-1-1mdk:

"An updated kernel for 9.0 is available with a number of bug fixes.
Supermount has been completely overhauled and should be solid on all
systems. Other fixes include XFS with high memory, a netfilter fix,
a fix for Sony VAIO DMI, i845 should now work with UDMA, and new
support for VIA C3 is included. Prism24 has been updated so it now
works properly on HP laptops and a new ACPI is included, although it is
disabled by default for broader compatibility."

Why wasn't this included in the kernel changelog?

Very confusing...

[Cooker] Re: [CHRPM] mdkkdm-9.1-8mdk

2003-02-05 Thread David Sansome
I wanted to be the first to say that I really like mdkkdm. Apart from being a
palendrome, it looks nice (especially with Mosfet's liquid style) and is
ideal for home users. I think you could do a couple of things to improve it
though:

 * The buttons don't stay in the same places when you click halt or reboot.
They appear to move upwards slightly. IIRC, this can be fixed with the use
of spacer widgets - forcing the buttons to stay at the bottom all the time.
 * It would be better to use the user's full name instead of the unix
username. KDM does this - so it should be pretty easy.
 * An *easy* way to get a text box up for username entry. This could perhaps
be done with a "Login as another user" button on the login screen, or an
entry in the mandrake control centre to switch between mdkkdm, kdm and gdm.

Keep up the good work,
David Sansome

If someone is interested, i could setup a grub_hd.img floppy image
   (~120K) that would propose:

title Mandrake is on the first drive & partition #1
   root (hd0,0)
   kernel /isolinux/alt0/vmlinuz vga=788
   initrd /isolinux/alt0/all.rdz

   root (hd0,0)
   kernel /foo/isolinux/alt0/vmlinuz vga=788
   initrd /foo/isolinux/alt0/all.rdz

   one would just have to:
   - either change in the floppy menu.lst to adapt to one's need
   - or edit on the fly using grub editor

   WYT?

do a make install (no rpm yet) and do pmsuspend, you got to have

This is really in dev and you may need to wait next kernel with latest

I went into rpmdrake to try a manual install, and found that it was not a listed

in my cooker/Mandrake/RPMS directory, so I'm assuming that it isn't making it to

[Cooker] question about translations

2003-02-05 Thread Nora Etukudo
I wonder why every new Mandrake Release introduce new translation errors
in the localisations which where not present in the previous Release.

Is the translation process rolled back every time and started from
ground up?

I actually ask because of the errors in the german localisation.

Liebe Grüße, Nora.

Well, I just checked whether it's specific to upgrade. I have another Mandrake
9.1 beta3 machine on which I did a fresh install, so I went over to look at its
configuration. After executing printerdrake to install everything,
/usr/lib/cups/filter/cupsomatic is missing. I didn't run through a full printer
configuration... is that required to get the cupsomatic script?

On a Mandrake 9.0 machine, 'rpm -qf /usr/lib/cups/filter/cupsomatic' shows that
it's installed by foomatic-2.0.2-20021220.2.2mdk. On the 9.1 beta3 machines,
'urpmf /usr/lib/cups/filter/cupsomatic' and 'urpmf cupsomatic' report nothing.
Looks like the cupsomatic file is missing from the entire distribution.

"usr/lib/cups/filter/cupsomatic: No such file or directory" in

files, but not cupsomatic.

I notice the cooker rpm for this package has gone from

https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=781

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-02-05 17:40 ---
Hi,
I have hit a similar bug I think. No errors are generated on boot up, but no
network interfaces are brought up. I have two Macronix network cards, both
using tulip network driver. Eth1 gets an IP via DHCP from a cable modem, eth0
is set to 192.168.0.1
On mdk 9.0 eth1 takes about 5-10 secs to get an IP, but on mdk 9.1 beta 2 (or
for that matter mdk 9.0 with updated initscripts) it says OK instantly.
If I run ifup eth1 in a shell, it thinks for a few seconds and then says there
is no link. Running dhclient eth1 gets an IP address fine.
Judicious use of echo commands has traced the problem to possibly be in the
check_link_down function but don't take my word for it, I'm not exactly a bash
guru.
Strangely, replacing the ifup script with one from 9.0 seems to fix it?

HTH,
Roger

eth0 was unable to start. It suggested to check cable. I have Windows XP pro on

in Windows XP Pro the NIC is correctly set to full duplex mode and 100 mbit

or something. It looks like Mandrake Connection wizzard doesn't set the network
card up correctly. I also tried to configure the network after the installation
from Mandrake Control Center and eth0 still can't start up. I searched all
around to find the place where I could manualy set duplex mode and line speed or
enable auto negotiation but I was unable to find this.

In cooker installs, you get a popup "Please wait, locating available packages",
which is fine. However, after several seconds the popup disappears, but the
Package Selection window is not displayed for another 25-30 seconds, and the
user is watching a blank install window with no idea of what's going on.

If the additional wait is normal, then the popup should be left visible
throughout it.

OK, fair enough. I have now replaced the old ISA sound chip with a

disappointing. First I have problems with an old video chipset and
replace that with a new Radeon chipset and still have problems under
Cooker. Now I have replaced my ISA sound chip with a new PCI
soundchip and sound is still screwed up on Cooker. These are basic
functions. Are they ever going to get straightened out?

classic bug sound tester:

"lspcidrake -v | fgrep AUDIO" will tell you which driver your card use
by default

"grep snd-slot /etc/modules.conf" will tell you what driver it
currently uses

"/sbin/lsmod" will enable you to check if its module (driver) is
loaded or not

"/sbin/chkconfig --list sound" and "/sbin/chkconfig --list alsa" will
tell you if sound and alsa services're configured to be run on
initlevel 3

"aumix -q" will tell you if the sound volume is muted or not

"/sbin/fuser -v /dev/dsp" will tell which program uses the sound card.

Thanks for the response, but my problem is lack of functional midi synth
support. Plain old 'pcm' sound works just fine. Midi synth worked
flawlessly for me with the 2.2 kernel under OSS. As soon as I went to
2.4 kernel, no more midi synth. I have tried at least a half dozen
different sound cards and three or four different systems and when I ask
why this is, no one seems to even have an answer. Obviously some people
must be using midi synth. It is required for applications like kmid and
rosegarden. But it is really frustrating that know one seems willing
to share what is required to make it happen. Is on board midi simply no
longer supported? Does one have to get a dedicated midi card or wave
table support now in order to have midi support? If true that really
sucks. Midi synth has been an integral part of sound cards for a long
time. The fact that Linux seems to have dropped support for it (Red
Hats sndconfig no longer even attempts to configure it and snddrake or
whatever it is also avoids it entirely) does not bode well for the Linux
desktop. The problem admitedly is not unique to Mandrake. I have yet
to find a distro that supports sound card midi synth any more. Perhaps
it is in fact an Alsa issue. And the fact that OSS has seemingly
dropped midi synth support is not helpful either. But that just points
out the size of the problem. The Linux development community is writing
off a whole desktop sector by their inability or unwillingness to
address this issue. Does anybody care?

That stinks. All USB devices specially USB_Storage is no longer functional

logon as root. I must log into an unpriviledged account and su to root.
That stinks. All USB devices specially USB_Storage is no longer functional
even when the modules file is edited. There went my security key and scanner.
Many of my command don't work now. I can't even do an lsof -i. Or, use
Konqueror or Galeon.

[Cooker] [Bug 1304] [drakxtools] New: Partition colors incorrect

2003-02-05 Thread [Bug 1304]
https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1304

   Product: drakxtools
 Component: diskdrake
   Summary: Partition colors incorrect
   Version: 9.1-0.19mdk
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: trivial
  Priority: P2
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In today's cooker, the colors displayed for various partition types are
incorrect. All of FAT32, NTFS, and HPFS show up as blue (FAT), although the
text description of the partition type (if you click on the partition) is
correct except for HPFS, which shows as NTFS (same partition type code, but it
*used* to show as HPFS).

This is diskdrake as used during the install for partition selection.

Good point!

Agreed - so ssh assumes you want to use the existing shells login
account - unless you want another name - then you would type:

$ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]

in which case it still only asks for just a password.

Funnily enough, through kio_fish - when you put:

fish://192.168.10.101

a dialog comes up asking for BOTH name and password - giving the wrong
impression of how it should work.

We appear to be in agreement that it doesn't make sense the way it
presently works. I will try to contact the developer and see if I can
get him/her to see this.

I just install the 9.1 beta3 client and I'm not getting issued a DHCP address
from my d-link 710p cable router. I did not have this problem with the 9.0
version. It appears that the nic is working correctly. When I take the cable
router out of the loop and connect directly to the cable modem I get a dhcp
address correctly. I have a number of other computers on this router that are
not having any problems getting issued and IP address. I had this same problem
with the beta2 version also .

https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1231

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-02-05 16:53 ---
I'm confused. All the terms I complained about are translated in the 'DrakX'
module.

So I looked at the first 9.1beta3 CD into
Mandrake/mdkinst/usr/share/locale_special/de/LC_MESSAGES/libDrakX.mo

The translated strings are not there! It seems MDK is using old .po files
for creating the CD's...

Hi pixel,

I'm not asking to go back any further (although that would be nice), what I'm
asking is that there be a "Previous" button on the "Choose the packages you want
to install" screen. You are allowed to click "Previous" on the screen after
that (install the servers), so it's possible -- it's just that there's no
"Previous" button on the "Choose the packages you want to install" screen.

When I put a screen name in quotes, that's the text that appears at the top of
the screen. The "Choose the packages you want to install" screen is the
individual package selection screen, not the general selection screen before it.

If I'm not being clear please let me know. Thanks!

If you do:
$ ftp 192.168.10.101
you get? A login prompt for a username ...

If you:
$ ssh 192.168.10.101
you get? Only a password prompt

This is a problem with kio_fish then, and I suspect no-one has had this
issue before. What should happen is that if the username differs, it
should terminate the connection and make a new one ... I haven't looked
at the source yet, but the author has posted here before so you might be
able to ask him about it ...

Since I normally use fish to machines where my logins are the same, it's
not an issue for me, and I have my ~/.ssh/config setup for ssh'ing into
machines where this is not the case:

eg:

Host klama
HostName compil.mandrake.org
User buchan
Compression yes
ForwardAgent no
ForwardX11 no

So instead of 'ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]', I just 'ssh klama'

That makes sense - but when I use ftp://192.168.10.101 - I get the login
dialog - type name and password and it works.

So how is a non SSH expert supposed to know this? It might be helpful
to have some on-line help for regular users about the fish syntax.

There is nothing under KDE HELP or man pages . . . and one would
naturally assume it works like the FTP.

I'm just trying to think from a usability perspective.

In short, its a bug in the acpi implementation in the compaq 700 series. I've
put up a how-to for installing cooker on it at my homepage
(http://individual.utoronto.ca/noyes/projects/laptop/tuxtop.html)

To be able to boot into Mandrake the first time you have to set "acpi=off" at
boot, and then recompile the kernel as stated on the above page.

I'd also be thankful for feedback on the how-to, so don't hesitate.
