Should you want the OSS driver, it's dmasound_pmac. Works OK on all my
Apple machines.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] stew]$ grep sound /etc/modules.conf
alias sound-slot-0 dmasound_pmac

The alias may have been slightly different in 8.2. That's from 9.1 and I
don't have an 8.2 install handy at the moment.

I get the best results with ALSA, but I don't know if the version in the
kernel you use is recent enough. You should probably upgrade to 9.1 ...
just do:
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
modprobe snd-card-awacs
modprobe snd-powermac

Only one of the last two modules is present, depends on the alsa driver
version.

ALSA comes up with volume muted by default, you can get sound working by
launching alsamixer in a terminal. Unmute "master", and turn up the volume
on "master" and (1st?) "headphone". I use gnome-alsamixer but I doubt you
have it on your 8.2 CDs (would be in contrib).

Oops, that should have gone to the list, no to you personally... Is
there a reason why you are using a reply-to header?

modprobe dmasound_pmac
/lib/modules/2.4.20-2mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/dmasound/
dmasound_pmac.o.gz: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
modprobe: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.20-2mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/dmasound/
dmasound_pmac.o.gz failed
modprobe: insmod dmasound_pmac failed

I'm using the benh kernel because thats the only one that would aloow
the installer to work. Also, there are no entries in /dev/sound.
It's an empty directory.

"/lib/modules/2.4.20-2mdk/..." doesn't look like you're really using
the benh kernel. Even if you use benh for the installer, the installed
system by default uses the 2.4.20-2mdk kernel. You have to install it
manually from the CD (or even better, use the newer version from
).

I had the same problem with 2.4.20-2mdk on my 867MHz TiBook, but with
benh-2.4.20-5mdk, it works fine.

There is no fix, it is a feature. Actually MacOS detects that you have
plugged in the headphones and switches the speakers off in software. The
simple fix is to use the mixer to adjust the different sound levels.
There is a separate slider for headphones. I do not have either of these
machines but you could try the mixers and hope that there are independent
internal and external controls. Take your pick from aumix, xmixer, kmix,
gmix etc

Good luck,

Q.

If you have a microphone attached then turning up the sound-in and the
sound-out can allow you to communicate with dogs + bats!

That does not work, but this does:

  below dmasound_pmac i2c-keywest
  alias sound-slot-0 dmasound_pmac

Using "below sound-slot-0 i2c-keywest" will not work because the
/etc/init.d/sound script will scan the modules.conf file for "sound-slot"
but will not load "sound-slot-0" (which I think it should), but instead
will load what stands after it.

Generally you will have better results with macserial. Make sure you have
the following alias in /etc/modules.conf:

alias serial macserial

And that the stock serial module does not load.

That said, there are supposed to be patches in the PPC kernel tree to
properly support the iBook2 modem, that our kernel does not have.

You have to adjust the balance and volume. I like aumix, use what you
prefer.

It is important not to do "insmod i2c-keywest" as that will seem to work
but it will not. Also if you only load dmasound_pmac it will look like the
i2c is loaded, but I think it loads the wrong one so the mixer will not
work. So, you have to load i2c-keywest first and then dmasound_pmac. I
guess in /etc/modules.conf this would work:

pre-install dmasound_pmac modprobe i2c-keywest
alias sound dmasound_pmac

I am going to try with ALSA cvs. Is there DEVFS support in the 8.0ppc
kernel?

Ok. Thanks.

I can report success with both "install-aty128fb" and "install-atyfb" on
my iBook2. "install-net" hangs when yaboot tries to load the kernel
though. Had to manually boot the CD via firmware as pressing C did not
work (works for all other bootable CDs though).

As I heard the text install was buggy I tried the graphical install. It is
a pain the ass to use. I really liked the text install in Mandrake 6.1.
I liked the "list all packages in alphabetical order" though, made it
easier to step through every package and select/deselected it (I want a
clean install). They keyboard control of it (needed for working through
the list fast) is not very good though.

There is a lot of crap installed even though I select "expert". I will
have to spend a lot of time cleaning all weird setup and "security"
scripts, so I can setup my own stuff without being disturbed by linuxconf.

I tried several times in "Control Panel" to get rid of that Aurora thingy
(which is actually made by a student at the CS department where I work)
as I want to see the real information. It failed. I still got Aurora when
shutting down and starting up.

Well, that is some reflections. I hope 8.1 will be a bit more polished. I
know the first platform release is hard to get rally sharp. Keep up the
good work!

Regards, Henrik

Ibook2 sound is still iffy at best and there is no support for it in the
Mandrake kernel. I worked with another user setting up the Alsa driver
and we got close, but not quite. Your current choices are:

hadess has a hacked driver that is supposes to work - check penguinppc.org

Networking should be working.

I don't have sound working on my iBook2 either. Networking is fine (at

Thanks Brice - If you're already installed, there's not much benefit
of
going to RC1 as most of the changes were to the installer. You could
always update the packages that were updated for bugs/security issues

Seems the kver stuff from the original kernel build is the issue. I was
getting the same error here on a clean kernel install:

rm -f /usr/src/linux/include/linux/modules/*
make dep
make vmlinux
make modules

seems to do the trick

rpm -e kernel-source and rpm -i:

or more traditionally:

make mrproper
make menuconfig
make dep
make vmlinux
make modules

also seems to work

BTW - I switch back and forth from the VT to X fine using XFree - I think
when running runlevel 5 though, it kills your X session.

The problem doesn't seem to be the driver, in this case - it appears to
be the format that the data is sent to the printer. From what Vincent
wrote, the USB system picks up the wrong format to send the data - hence
the problem.

I've had the exact same problem ever since I was using Linux/PPC 2000
Q4. I didn't figure out the problem till just a while ago. It appears
that the sound system (arts) is not switching the endiness of the sound
files before it plays them. Thus you get static. This is apparently
fixed in KDE 2.2.

To get rid of the static from the startup and shutdown go into the KDE
ControlCenter. Under LookNFeel go to System Notifications. Then expand
out KDE System Notifications. Expand out KDE is Starting Up and KDE is
Exiting. Uncheck the Play Sound Boxes. There are other System
Notifications that play sound here and you may desire to turn them off
as well.

Alternately you can check the Use external player box and put in
/usr/bin/play and it will play the sounds. However, sometimes it's not
terribly timely with playing them. At least for me the startup sound
plays a couple minutes into running KDE. But it will work till we get
KDE 2.2.

OK Now that helped a little.
I downloaded a new ppd file from the link that was on the sourceforge site
(instead of using the one that cup-o-matic made).

I don't know the command for making it world readable, but I tried
chmod go+w
I also restarted cups, and that showed me the new ppd file in
mandrake Control Center
I selected it.
Tested it.
Still it doesn't work :-\

Do I need to install all that HP advanced printer utility stuff? On this
page:
http://hp.sourceforge.net/uhowto/eps-uhowto.php

I saw this there:

On my Linux-Mandrake system, printtool starts CUPS. What's wrong?
A: The draxdrake package symlinks /usr/bin/printtool to
/usr/sbin/printerdrake. The enhanced printtool is installed in
/usr/sbin/printtool. If your PATH has /usr/bin before usr/sbin, then
draxdrake will start instead of printtool.

Doers all of this mean I should not be using cups?

If so, then how do I change it?

Sorry for the long barrage of questions. Maybe I'm just missing something
obvious :-/

Thanks,
Jeff

Vincent,

The 1200 is a postscript supporting printer. No drivers are necessary.

I suspect that it will work just the same as under x86. Just run
cdrecord --scanbus and you should see the dev entry for it. Haven't
tried it yet, but I see that the ide-scsi module is loaded so it
should operate the same.

The instructions are on that page. Scroll down to the drivers. Under
postscript look for the link to Linux Mandrake instructions. They
should work for the PPC distribution.

Well...it makes me think the printer _should_ work.
But I've been doing a lot of reading, and trying a lot of things
and I just can't get it to work.
I used the cups-o-matic thing to generate a ppd file, then copied the file
to /usr/share/cups/model/HP
but it doesn't show up in Mandrake control center...

This cups stuff is completely new to me and I just don't get it.

I could really use a little hand-holding on this one--especially now that I
know it should work.

Anyone? Please?

Thanks for your help so far.

Hi Brice (and all)
Thanks again for your help.
It looks like usblp0 gets detected during startup, but I added
the line to rclocal anyway.
I did as you suggested and reconfigured via the Mandrake Control Center.
There are about 100 HP drivers there. I tried about 30 of them.
None work. But--and I think this is good--a couple of the drivers did at
least make the light flash on the printer--so something is getting
sent to the printer with a couple of the drivers.
I think

Anyway, there is no driver for HP Laserjet 1200 there.
I tried Laserjet Series, and Laserjet cups v1.1 but neither works at all--no
response from the printer at all.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Sound, printing and cdrw

2001-08-17 Thread Brice D Ruth

Hi Jeff,

The output from your log is exactly what we're looking for. Once usblp0
is registered, cups will be able to access it, properly. Try going
through the CUPS config again - remember, if you restart, you need to
reload that printer module, since its not a permanent thing. If you'd
like this done every time you boot, try appending the following line to
/etc/rc.d/rc.local

/sbin/modprobe printer

That should take care of loading the module, so the printer should
always be available. Once I had gotten my Xerox M750 detected in the
USB subsystem, the printer control panel in the 'Mandrake Control
Center' - in the 'Hardware' section, was able to configure it properly.
If you select 'local printer' when you add a printer to the system, I
believe it should pick up on usblp0. If it doesn't, lemme know. Once
it does this, it should try to find an appropriate driver - good luck
with this!

OK Here's my /etc/modules.conf.
I wasn't sure what to do with the alias-sound-slot line.
I left as it was:

pre-install pcmcia_core CARDMGR_OPTS=-f /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias usb-interface usb-ohci
alias sound-slot-0 dmasound_awacs
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
alias eth0 gmac
#

#
# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
# ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-awacs
# OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

But I have no idea where to find the alsa rpms. I'm assuming they're
installed. I do see a /usr/share/alsa directory...

rpmfind.net and linuxppc.org don't have alsa for ppc.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Re: Sound, printing and cdrw

2001-08-17 Thread Brice D Ruth

OK, now for the sound - this can get a bit tricky, so bear with me, 'k?
I have an iMac DV (late 2000) w/ sound working fine - so have hope :)

First, you should know that I use alsa for sound - so if you have
something against alsa, this won't work for you.

Step one - configure /etc/modules.conf

My modules.conf looks like this:

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
# ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-awacs
# OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

I left out entries for my network card, usb, and usb-storage drivers.
These are probably already in your modules.conf

So, getting this in and restarting should get alsa loaded - you also
need to make sure that you have the alsa RPMs. I have the following
versions:

alsa-lib-devel-0.5.10-2mdk
alsa-utils-0.5.10-2mdk
alsa-lib-0.5.10-2mdk

you probably don't need the first, -devel-, but it won't hurt to have it
installed, either.

Get to this point & write back!

Hey there - I think I can help you w/ most of these things, but let's
try to tackle one at a time, eh? :)

First off - with the USB printer, is your printer being recognized by
the USB subsystem? This would probably require you inserting the
'printer' module - something like this should do the trick:

# /sbin/modprobe printer

To see if that recognized your printer, try this (right after the above)

# tail /var/log/messages

and see if it says anything about your printer, e.g. that it was bound
to something like usblp0

I have been gone for awhile again. Brice you were trying to help me with the
sound when I had to take off. I hope you have some more ideas.

I ended up reinstalling mandrake as I botched trying to upgrade X and
couldn't get it to run again so I am starting from scratch. I installed the
arts packages and the alsa packages.

Here is my lsmod:

Module Size Used by

Here is my modules.conf:
pre-install pcmcia_core CARDMGR_OPTS=-f /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start

alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

Hope you can help me out with this. I type amixer and get:
amixer: Mixer attach hw:0 error: No such file or directory

Here is another error message I generate:
[root@localhost dippy]# service alsa restart

I tried the dmasound package that Stew put up. I got static after I ran that

Hi Dippy,

No - I don't believe I did.  I don't think I had any sound whatsoever.  As
far as alsa & aRts goes, the following RPMs are installed here:

libarts2-devel-2.1.2-2mdk
arts-2.1.2-2mdk
libarts2-2.1.2-2mdk
alsa-lib-devel-0.5.10-2mdk
alsa-utils-0.5.10-2mdk
alsa-lib-0.5.10-2mdk

Probably anything w/ -devel you won't need (then again, maybe you will if
you need to recompile any sound apps ;).  And as for XMMS - the version on
the CD is BAD ... get Stew's recompile from the mirrors (should be in Mandrake-devel/cooker/ppc/Mandrake/RPMS/
- just look for a version more recent than yours.

See if that gets you going.  If not - write back.  Seeing as that I have
the exact same machine you do (assuming your's is a 400MHz iMac DV) - I'm
sure we can get this figured out ;)

Re: Sound Issues

Dippy,

Have you tried experimenting with the alsa sound drivers that are on my
web page? I can't build those into the distro due to conflicts with the
other architectures, but I'm going to try maintaining them personally, as
the kernels progress. Some of the newer machines have sound hardware that
is not compatible with dmasound or dmasound_awacs, so the alsa drivers are
an alternative. I know some other PPC distro's are now using
dmasound_pmac, but I haven't had an opportunity to look at how I might
patch this into the Mandrake kernel.
