this theory has one serious flaw [seems to me]:
what on earth would the ADL have to gain from this?

Well, a serious conspiratorialist might argue that mad killer Jews
need no specific reason, they just do it out of general principles.
Or that ADL saw Koresh as a serious challenge, somehow. Or that
the whole Waco affair was a mind-control and siege-and-destroy
exercise, conducted to train/desensitize the participants. Or
some other such nonsense. Hey, you want coherence here? G'z...

And which segment of the populace will rise first--will it be the
ghettos, whose inmates can be easily identified and isolated...or
the suburbs? It does not pay to underestimate middle-class rage.
The two greatest revolutions prior to the 20th century, the American
and French revolutions, were middle-class affairs...and the middle
class is being royally screwed by the Oligarchy today.

Also, assumptions are made as to how such a "rising" would occur,
ie that firearms would be involved. A successful modern revolt
IMHO is more likely to involve the efforts of hackers/crackers
attacking the information infrastructure - going for the brains'n'
nerves, rather than just wasting meatware [people] in fruitless
armed conflict. People who think that firearms will bring down
the US gov't just don't appreciate the forces/complexity involved.

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: September 12, 1999

Contact: ALEX JONES @ 512-331-9191 98.9 KJFK-FM

Documentary Filmmaker and Radio Host Alex Jones to Spearhead
the
Rebuilding
of the Branch Davidian Church in Waco, Texas on Its Original Site

Austin, TX -In 1993, a religious community, with a history dating
back
to the 1930's in Waco found itself caught in the middle of a 1990's
version of a witch-hunt. All that remains now at the Branch Davidian
community site where the church once stood is high grass, cactus,
rubble and barbed wire. For the last six years, documentary
filmmaker
and radio host, Alex Jones has

been
at the forefront of exposing the government cover-up of its violation
of the First Amendment that entails the Freedom of Religion and the
free exercise thereof. With the support of surviving Branch
Davidians,
Jones will spearhead the building of a new, completely functional,
substantial church on Mount Carmel on the site where their church
was
destroyed in 1993.

Alex Jones has a strong relationship with all of the surviving Branch
Davidians who are not incarcerated. He has interviewed them all on
radio, television and for his documentaries. "First and foremost, we
have to understand that these people were scattered to the four
winds.
Those who weren't killed or falsely imprisoned have little identity
due to the fact that their cultural and religious center was
destroyed. I say we set out to ressurect this structure as a
monument
to freedom of religious and cultural expression, and as a reminder to
the dangers of the government having police powers that are too
wide
and undefined," says Jones.

Jones is dead serious about the construction project. Earlier this
year, Jones and his associates were horrified to learn that Joe
Campana, a World War II and Korean War Veteran with 100 percent
disability was about to have his home demolished by the City of
Austin, which had condemned it as "unsafe." Racing against city
bulldozers, Jones and his associates met with Joe Campana and
within
13 days, a city record, had built him a new, fully furnished home
thanks to a community of volunteers that joined forces and donated
materials to help out the disabled veteran.

The story of the rebuilding of Joe Campana's home was
documented and
supported by Austin CBS affiliate KEYE-42, FOX-7 and featured in
the
Austin-American Statesman in two articles dated Tuesday Jan 26,
1999
and

Sunday February 7, 1999. More information on the rebuilding of Joe
Campana's home can be obtained in an article titled "Miracle on
49th
Street" which can obtained by visiting Alex Jones' website:
www.infowars.com and clicking on the link to www.vicvreeland.com.

With architects and engineers already in place, Jones will continue
to
call out for volunteers to help rebuild the church in Waco, with an
aim to begin construction by next Sunday. Volunteers of all trades,
anyone wishing to donate materials or funds for the construction,
and
anyone willing and able to lend a helping hand should can the
volunteer line at 1-512-292-0700. Updates will be ongoing at Alex
Jones' website at www.infowars.com. Construction will be ongoing,
with
no construction to take place on Saturdays, which is a holy day for
the Branch Davidians.

Jones will continue to call out for volunteers for the construction
project. Interviews with surviving Branch Davidians, David Thibideaux
and Clyve Doyle, who support the project, will take place on Alex's
Show - "The Final Edition" between 8:00-10:00 PM Central on 98.9
KFJK-FM (Lampassas, Killeen, Austin) this Monday and Tuesday,
and on
his national show, "Exposing Corruption" on Genesis
Communications
between 1:00-2:00 PM Central.

ON THE CUSP OF THE MILLENNIUM -- MARTYRS, PRAYER WARS
  AND UFO VISITATIONS

Has it begun?

One thousand years ago, claimed a Burgundian monk Ralph Glaber,
inhabitants throughout Europe packed churches in terror, stopped
planting their crops, and prepared for the end of the world. Groups
of pilgrims roamed the countryside warning of impending Armageddon.
Apocalyptic movements arose, some even taking up arms to establish a
"New Jerusalem," a paradise on Earth to pave the way for the Second
Coming of Jesus. It was all a manifestation of the fervent religious
belief -- and social hysteria -- linked to the calendric roll-over
which brought on a new millennium. It had been one thousand years
since the birth of Jesus Christ, and for many, the Messiah was about
to return and fulfill the prophecies of Daniel, Revelation and the
other apocalyptic texts of the Bible.

But did all of this really happen? Can we expect something like this
as we linger at the end of our century, on the cusp of a new
millennium?

Mainstream historians say that the accounts of a terrorized Europe
anxiously waiting for the sands of the hourglass to run out on New
Year's Eve, 1,000 A.D. ignore both the complexities of the western
calendar, and the evidence of written record. Glaber's five-volume
"Histories," on which this apocalyptic portrayal of early Medieval
Europe is based, is considered unreliable in this respect, although
there was indeed a pervasive sense of gloom, foreboding and
anticipation at this time, much of it centered on the fulfillment of
prophecy. Glaber provided a template for future apocalyptic writers,
warning: "Satan will soon be unleashed because the thousand years have
been completed..." His volumes, penned in the 1030s, describe "the
story of the events and prodigies which happened around and after the
millennial year of the Incarnation of the Savior." He wrote of
natural disasters, including the violent conflagrations which swept
cities in Italy and Gaul, and the deaths of prominent men. Even the
comet of 1003 is mentioned as evidence to suggest that Europe was
undergoing profound apocalyptic turmoil.

Today, there is a pattern which emerges as we approach the year 2000.
Unlike the peasants of the first millennium, western moderns have more
of an awareness of time based on a uniform calendar. Contrary to the
beliefs of many, though, it is not 2,000 years since the birth of one
Jesus Christ; historians debate whether or not Jesus even existed as a
historical figure, but if he did it is likely that he -- or the
person(s) upon which the legend of Jesus is constructed -- was not
born on December 25 two millennia ago. Some early Christians, in
fact, celebrated the birth of their messiah in the spring.

The belief, in a historic millennium, and a convenient date
commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ is a strong artifact in the
public imagination. A full page ad in the August 27, 1999 issue of
USA TODAY invites people to a "2000th Birthday Celebration!" for the
Christian messiah at Michigan Bible college. "Does Jesus' birthday
mark the beginning of a new era?" asks the colorful broadside.
"Clearly all the signs are there. Earthquakes in China, Turkey and
Japan; famine in Africa, Asia and Russia; pestilences in the form of
AIDS are now worldwide; fearful sights all over the world brought into
our living rooms every night via TV; and continuous signs from heaven
in the form of eclipses, constellation alignments, meteorites and
comets..."

Like a temporal odometer, though, the transition from 1999 to 2000
possesses a compelling quality, as Stephen J. Gould noted in his
book, "Questioning The Millennium: A Rationalist's Guide To A
Precisely Arbitrary Countdown," (1997, Harmony Book, N.Y.) The next
few flips of the calendar will mark not only the end of our century --
a poignant enough event which 100 years ago stimulated considerable
commentary and speculation on the human condition -- but the advent of
a new epoch of 1000 years as well. There is, of course, the perennial
debate; does this new millennium commence on January 1,

*** U.S. to support peace in E. Timor

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) - The United States is offering "hundreds,
not thousands" of American forces to participate in the international
force to restore order in battered East Timor, the Clinton
administration said Monday. National Security Adviser Sandy Berger
also said the Indonesian military, accused by President Clinton of
contributing to the violence in the former Portuguese colony, may
wind up patrolling side by side with foreign peacekeepers. Berger
said the U.S. contribution to the peacekeeping force would involve
small numbers of personnel, and suggested some may go there in a
matter of days. Earlier, Clinton told reporters the United States
would supply planes and pilots for an airlift and help with
logistics, communications and intelligence. See

*** Rangers report new Waco evidence

WASHINGTON (AP) - A dozen spent rifle cartridges of a type often used
by snipers were recovered from a house used by the FBI during the
1993 standoff with the Branch Davidians, the Texas Rangers reported
Monday. The report raised questions about federal agents' insistence
that they fired no shots. Twelve .308-caliber casings and two dozen
Israeli-manufactured .223-caliber casings were recovered from a house
used by the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team during the 51-day siege, the
Rangers said in a report provided to Congress. In an account the FBI
has since said was wrong, an FBI agent initially reported hearing
shots fired from that house on the siege's final day. The FBI, which
has insisted for six years that its agents didn't fire a single shot
during the standoff, refused comment Monday. See

*** Dragging suspect proud of actions

BRYAN, Texas (AP) - A white ex-convict charged in the dragging death
of a black man on a Texas road wrote while in prison that he was
proud of the murder and considered himself a "hero," a prosecutor
said Monday. "This man has written how he sees himself after this
murder," Jasper County District Attorney Guy James Gray said as trial
for Lawrence Russell Brewer got under way. "He sees himself as a
hero, a star, that he's really accomplished. It's really a kind of
weird mind-set." Brewer, 32, is the second of three white men charged
with killing James Byrd Jr., 49, by dragging him behind a pickup
truck. Shawn Allen Berry, 24, already has been convicted and
sentenced to death in the June 1998 killing. John William King, also
24, is awaiting trail. See

*** Coast Guard fires on drug boats

WASHINGTON (AP) - Coast Guard sharpshooters for the first time are
firing from helicopters to disable fast drug-carrying boats on the
high seas, officials said Monday. The previously classified operation
has already netted more than 6 tons of cocaine and led to arrests of
13 accused smugglers. The operation netted a record 53 tons of
cocaine in the last year. Officials say the sharpshooters pose no
risk to fisherman or pleasure boaters in the Caribbean, where
helicopters have stopped three boats in the last month. The operation
uses MH90 Enforcer helicopters leased commercially and specially
equipped by the Coast Guard. Crews use nonlethal force to warn the
boats and, if necessary, disable their engines with gunfire. See

EAST TIMOR

AGENCE FRANCE PRESS: An East Timorese support group claimed here Monday to
have received reports that tens of thousands of people had died in a
deliberate genocidal campaign by Indonesia. The East Timor International
Support Center also believes 300,000 to 400,000 people face death from
starvation and thirst and another 250,000 people, a third of the population,
have been deported in vast convoys of trucks and ships.

AUSTRALIAN: The war-hardened British officer thought he'd seen hell in
Kosovo. Then he saw Dili. "I came out of Kosovo, and what I've seen in Timor
is worse much worse," Major John Petrie, a former instructor of
Australia's military police, told The Sunday Telegraph.

NEWS FROM THE COLONIES

TELEGRAPH, LONDON: A tour around some of Kosovo's ubiquitous minefields
makes painfully clear that many of the casualties suffered by civilians are
being caused by cluster bombs dropped by NATO from the air rather than mines
sown by the Serbs or Kosovo Liberation Army. Since the refugees returned to
Kosovo in June there have been 232 casualties attributed to mines, or around
80 a month. It is officially admitted that at least a third of these have
been victims of the cluster bomb; and some estimates put it higher. NATO is
known to have dropped a total of 1,300 containers of cluster bombs over
Kosovo. Each container carried 208 of these bomblets. So something like
270,000 of these deadly weapons were scattered over the country.

WACO

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Some Justice Department officials involved in the
Branch Davidian case knew within months after the 1993 tragedy that FBI
agents had used military tear gas rounds against the sect, documents
submitted to Congress this week indicate. The documents also indicate that
FBI agents involved in the final tear gas assault on the Branch Davidian
compound freely discussed firing several military CS tear gas devices when
questioned by Justice Department lawyers. But not until 1996 did any of the
disclosed FBI or Justice Department documents include the acknowledgment
that the military rounds were capable of sparking fires. None of the
documents submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee indicate that Attorney
General Janet Reno or FBI Director Louis Freeh were told that the devices
were used despite Ms. Reno's explicit ban on any pyrotechnic devices in the
April 19, 1993, assault.

AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN: In an admission sure to fuel new questions about
military involvement in the Branch Davidian siege, state officials revealed
in an Austin courtroom Friday that a Texas Rangers' report on evidence
collected at the scene contains classified military secrets. Attorneys for
the Texas Department of Public Safety said the report can't be made public
yet because other agencies needed time to review it to see whether any parts
of it should remain confidential.

HILLARY WATCH

NEW YORK POST: First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton is seriously considering
plastic surgery in a bid to improve her public image as she readies for her
Senate campaign. Clinton has visited a top Manhattan doctor and is
discussing how she can rid her face of the deeply creased lines and bags
that have become more noticeable over the past year. Clinton was recently
seen entering the Park Avenue offices of Dr. Cap Lesesne, a prominent
plastic surgeon. Wearing dark sunglasses and a navy-blue pantsuit, Clinton
entered alone and spent nearly an hour consulting with Lesesne, sources said
"The Lewinsky scandal took its toll on both Hillary and Bill," said one
cosmetic surgeon. "Hillary especially has noticeable sagging beneath her
eyes and around her neck. It's as if she looks permanently exhausted."

an anti-perspirant/deodorant combination so go home and check your
labels. Deodorant is fine, anti-perspirant is not.

Here's why: The human body has a few areas that it uses to purge
toxins; behind the knees, behind the ears, groin area,
and armpits. The toxins are purged in the form of
perspiration. Anti-perspirant, as the name clearly
indicates prevents you from perspiring, thereby
inhibiting the body from purging toxins from below
the armpits. These toxins do not just magically
disappear. Instead, the body deposits them in the
lymphnodes below the arms since it cannot sweat them
out. This causes a high concentration of toxins and
leads to cell mutations: a.k.a. CANCER. Nearly all
breast cancer tumors occur in the upper outside
quadrant of the breast area. This is precisely where
  the lymphnodes are located.

Additionally, men are less likely (but not completely
exempt) to develop breast cancer prompted by
anti-perspirant usage because most of the
anti-perspirant product is caught in their hair and
is not directly applied to the skin.

Women who apply anti-perspirant right after shaving
increase the risk further because shaving causes almost
imperceptible nicks in the skin which give the chemicals
entrance into the body from the armpit area

PLEASE pass this along to anyone you care about. Breast Cancer is
becoming frighteningly common. This awareness may save lives. If you
are skeptical about these findings, I urge you to do some research
for yourself. You will arrive at the same conclusions, I assure you.

  Thank you.

Subject: London right-wing paper spreads police fairy tales

SUNDAY TIMES (London) September 12 1999
Anti-City anarchists plot global riot

   Mark Macaskill and Jessica Berry

ANARCHISTS who masterminded this summer's riot in the City of London are
planning a second protest to target banks and financial institutions, a
Sunday Times investigation has revealed.

Militant groups including Reclaim the Streets and Earth First, which
co-ordinated the June 18 (J18) action, have been in contact with their
American counterparts to launch a simultaneous campaign on November 30.

A website set up to co-ordinate activists calls for a day of "civil
disobedience" and "simultaneous actions in financial districts in major
cities around the world". Last week a member of the California-based
Ruckus society, the group behind the website, confirmed that it was in
talks with British activists.

The date has been chosen to coincide with the meeting of the World Trade
Organisation (WTO) in Seattle, Washington, to be attended by
representatives of 150 countries.

Detective Chief Inspector Kieron Sharp, of the City of London police,
said: "We are aware of this date and are taking the matter seriously.

"We are trying to assess what is being organised, but it's too early to
say if it will be on the scale of the June protest."

The J18 day of action, billed as an international "carnival against
capitalism", turned into a violent demonstration that left 46 people
injured and damaged property worth #2m.

After the protest, a secret meeting was held by Reclaim the Streets at
which activists called for another attack "while the iron was hot".

The worst violence occurred at the Liffe futures exchange building, and
the nearby Rabobank, where windows were smashed and offices wrecked. A
McDonald's outlet and a Mercedes-Benz dealership were also vandalised.

Jan Dost, of Rabobank, said: "It was unfortunate that we were targeted
last time. I can only hope that this time we will be spared."

A special action camp, called Smash the WTO - intended to train activists
in direct-action campaigns and street protests ahead of the event in
November - is to be held this week near Seattle. Among the speakers is
John Jordan, a leading figure of Reclaim the Streets UK.

In an e-mail sent to The Sunday Times last week, an activist warned:
"People are really getting prepared for some good action. I guarantee that
there will be some anarchist s*** going down, too."

Dave, an eco-warrior with Earth First, said: "Direct action is the only
way forward and plans are being made for another protest. We are waiting
for further details by e-mail."

Schnews, an activist newsletter based in Brighton, recently told activists
that plans were under way and said that regular updates would follow.

In what is thought to be a trial run for N30, animal rights and
anti-capitalist protesters plan to travel to Bournemouth this month for
the Labour party conference.

More than 16,000 members of the pro-hunting community will also be in
attendance at the conference to protest against a possible ban on hunting.

"Some passionate anti-hunt campaigners see this as an ideal opportunity to
cause trouble," said one activist. However, the WTO conference at the
Washington State Trade and Convention Center in Seattle is regarded as the
main event.

Seattle police have been liaising with the American Secret Service and the
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to prepare for the 10,000 activists
expected, many of them travelling from Britain, Germany and the
Netherlands.

Senior police officials in Britain have expressed concern that small
activist groups, which previously acted independently, have forged links
with bigger groups as a result of J18.

They say this will make the co-ordination of a global event much easier
than ever before.

Secret and Suppressed: Banned Ideas and Hidden History, edited by Jim
Keith, 1993 Feral House, Box 3466, Portland, OR 97208 , $12.95

In his preface to Secret and Suppressed, Jim Keith states that "the people
who direct and control the world's financial resources are, to a very large
extent, the same people who control and direct the world's media." Secret
and Suppressed is a guidebook to alternative views of contemporary
events and world history... (which) confronts the reader with disquieting
revelations on mind control, secret societies, media disinformation, cults
and elite cabals. The hard evidence supplied by many of the articles is
startling."

About half of the articles in this anthology expose Masonic activity, how it
has shaped society in the past and its influence in our lives today.

In his article "Sorcery, Sex, Assassination and the Science of Political
Control," James Shelby Downard writes, "For years I have been trying to
draw attention to Masonic sorcery and its (alleged) relation to political
control." He states that "Benjamin . was initiated into Freemasonry at St.
John's Lodge in Philadelphia and ... is credited with publishing the first
Masonic book in America."

He identifies the "House of the Rising Sun," a Masonic meeting place for
powerful political figures such as Benjamin Franklin, George Washington
and George Mason, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, which as the
earliest known record of the Masonic Royal Arch Degree of York, listed in
the city annals on December 22, 1753. He discusses the roots of the anti-
mason political party that challenged Freemason Andrew Jackson for the
presidency in 1826, and the murder of the Mormon prophet which resulted
in the men of the Mormon church withdrawing from Freemasonry.
(S.M.A.R.T. note: For more information on the Mormons and their
connection to the Masons, see Issue #6)

He delves deeply into the JFK assassination which he believes is
suffused with Masonic symbolism having to do with violence, perversion,
conspiracy, death and degradation (specifically, Masonic Greening
Rituals). "Masonry does not (allegedly) believe in murdering a man in just
any old way and in the JFK assassination, it went to incredible lengths and
took great risks to make this heinous act correspond to the ancient fertility
oblation of The Killing of the King."

He identifies the three hoboes arrested at the time of the assassination as
"at least as important symbolically as operationally, and they
compromise the 'three unworthy craftsmen' of Masonry... and a mirror or
doppelganger of the three assassins who executed the actual murder." He
notes that Dealy Plaza is the site of the First Masonic Temple in Dallas and
home of the Blue Front Tavern, a Masonic hangout, and that important
security strategy was planned for Dealy Plaza by the New Orleans CIA
station which was headquartered in a Masonic temple building.

He points out that Mason Lyndon Johnson appointed Mason Earl Warren to
investigate the death of Catholic President John Kennedy; 33rd degree
Mason Gerald Ford was instrumental in suppressing what little evidence of
a conspiratorial nature reached the Commission; 33rd degree Mason J.
Edgar Hoover was responsible for supplying information to the
commission; and former CIA Director and 33rd degree Mason Allen Dulles
was responsible for most of his agency's data to the panel. And he asks,
"Would it be paranoid to suspect a panel of Nazis appointed to investigate
the death of a Jew, or to suspect a commission of Klansmen appointed to
investigate the death of a Negro?"

In his article "Subliminal Images in Oliver Stone's 'JFK' " which follows,
Dean Grace identifies Downard's Three Craftsmen; "A man in a dark suit
passes three hoboes being taken into custody by police. There is a hint
that the hoboes give a secret hand sign.. later.. .A man in a dark suit
passes by the three tramps and gives a secret hand sign for the tramps'
benefit. "Also (while) patrolman Smith is testifying on the witness stand... a
tall young man wearing a dark suit... turns toward the camera and clearly
gives a Masonic sign of distress... holds the palm of the left hand up and
crosses it with the right hand pain down.. .at waist level.. twelve inches from
the body.

Re: [CTRL] Bible Code is Bunk

1999-09-13 Thread Taylor, John (JH)

 -Caveat Lector-

There are 2 parts of the 'bible code'. There is the 'predictive' part which
is shown to be nonsense.
There is the other part which is the recurring pattern of letters/ numbers
which remains statistically valid.

(there is another part which is interesting but difficult to quantify which
is the appearance of significant words at appropiate points-bit like the use
of a crossword puzzle) an example is the book of esther in which the name of
God is not mentioned- except if you put the verses out in hebrew the name of
God appears twice atthe by lining up the first letters of the verse.

Such word play was common.( A nice example is given by Mr Rohl in his book
the test of time The name Jezebel in the cananite language meeans "how great
is Baal" . but when written down by the biblical scribe he modified it to be
written " a load of Sh*t".

[CTRL] Air Force search-and-rescue operations called 'broken' (fwd)

1999-09-13 Thread MICHAEL SPITZER

September 13, 1999

Air Force search-and-rescue operations called 'broken'

By Rowan Scarborough
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

The recovery of an F-117 pilot shot down inside Serbia showed
that Air Force search-and-rescue operations are "broken,"
according to an internal document that states it took too long to
locate the downed flier.

The document also states that "air tasking orders" to pilots
may have been compromised during the 79-day Operation Allied
Force. This may explain how Serbia was able to empty some
government buildings hours before they were bombed by NATO
warplanes.

Air Force sources said the service has underfunded combat
search-and-rescue units in recent years as the overall defense
budget was stretched thin to cover overseas deployments.

The source said mission-capable rates have dropped for the
specially equipped HH-60 Blackhawk helicopters. Units need more
sophisticated electronics to home in on signals sent by a downed
pilot, he said.

The document listing the problem, a copy of which was
obtained by The Washington Times, is a compilation of notes taken
by an officer at a two-day Air Force brainstorming session held
Aug. 13 and 14 at the Pentagon.

The session was a kickoff for an Air Force "lessons learned"
study of the air war over Serbia. It will be incorporated into a
larger report submitted this month to Defense Secretary William
S. Cohen.

An Air Force spokesman confirmed the notes came from the
two-day session, but said they did not necessarily reflect the
service's final conclusions.

The March 27 rescue of the F-117 stealth fighter pilot was
one of the war's most dramatic moments. The plane -- one of only
two allied jets shot down during the war -- was hit shortly after
the flier released two laser-guided bombs on an air-defense site
southwest of Belgrade.

As the Pentagon and NATO clamped a news blackout,
search-and-rescue helicopters and fixed-wing fighters conducted a
furious search. An Air Force source said the team had to
disengage, refuel and penetrate Serbian air space a second time.
The SAR (search-and-rescue) team finally located and airlifted
the pilot as Serbian ground troops moved near.

The internal Air Force notes say of the incident, "Combat
Search and Rescue is broken in the [Air Force]. . . . Too slow in
picking up the F-117 pilot. The A-10 guys were heroic. [Air Force
European command] has no rescue forces of its own."

Two Air Force sources, who asked not to be named, tied the
problems to funding.

"Everything is underfunded," said one source. "This
administration has been on a procurement holiday and the
readiness dollars are way down. They have underfunded the
Department of Defense, the forces."

The document also says that orders to pilots "may have been
compromised," but does not say how Belgrade was tipped off.

"[Air Tasking Order] was complex and difficult," the notes
say. "Became more of an administrative task than of commanding
air power. Distribution was a problem. Security also a problem."

An Air Force source said planners believe the information
was leaked to Belgrade once it reached NATO headquarters in
Belgium and was distributed to allies for target approval.

"Because much of the information on a tasking order in one
form or another wound up in Belgium there's a high probability it
was compromised in non-secure conversations at NATO," the source
said. "Everybody was worried sick about that. Some of the
facilities they attacked, everything was moved out of them.
That's not a coincidence."

The Kosovo operation, which the Air Force has dubbed Air War
Over Serbia, amounted to a full theater war and exceeded the
percentage of Air Force assets used in Vietnam or the 1991
Persian Gulf war, according to the document.

The Air Force played a dominant role, deploying more than
700 planes and accounting for most of some 34,000 sorties.

The Air Force brainstormers praised the performance of key
Air Force weapons systems, such as the $2 billion B-2 stealth
bomber. The Joint Direct Attack Munition -- a satellite-guided
bomb impervious to poor weather -- was also lauded. The B-2
Spirit dropped over 600 JDAMs.

Labour to host Britain's largest arms bazaar

 By Tony Hyland
 13 September 1999

 Back to screen version

Britain is to stage its largest ever arms and military equipment fair September
14-17. The exhibition brings together representatives of the UK's three armed
forces, along with some 600 defence companies and official delegates from over
 50 countries.

In suburban Surrey and London's Docklands, uniformed generals from some of the
world's most dictatorial regimes will mingle with sharp suited businessman.
Sales representatives from the leading arms manufacturers in Britain and
internationally will compete for the attention of prospective buyers by
demonstrating the destructive capabilities of their products.

Defence Systems Equipment International (DSEi), the company responsible for the
exhibition, boasted in its brochure that "DSEi is Europe's largest and most
prestigious defence exhibition ...DSEi responds to demands from the industry and
from key customers for a single defence event in the UK. One exhibition at which
to display and view defence systems and defence equipment solutions.”

The exhibition is sponsored by Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA), a
government research agency. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is in charge of the
foreign delegates invited to the event with Defence Secretary, George Robertson,
opening the proceedings. The wining and dining involved is likely to run up a
large hospitality bill. The UK Department of Defence alone is expected to
contribute £250,000 to meet the costs of keeping the visiting officials in their
 customary style.

That this largest ever arms fair is being hosted by Labour belies its claim to
have developed an “ethical foreign policy.” This phrase was first coined by
Foreign Secretary Robin Cook back in May 1997. Then the newly elected government
pledged to break with the practice of its Conservative predecessors and stop
British manufacturers from selling arms to countries which then used them for
 internal repression.

The recent bloodshed in East Timor, and the collusion of the Indonesian security
forces with the anti-independence militias, focussed attention on the arms
fair's invitation list drawn up by Labour. Indonesia appeared as one of the
MoD's official guests. The invite was only withdrawn earlier this week, in the
teeth of opposition from the MoD.

Lady Symons, Defence Procurement Minister, initially protested that Indonesia
had the right to look at what equipment was on offer for “self-defence.” Her
claims became increasingly untenable as news broke that a British Aerospace
manufactured Hawk jet had flown over Dili, the East Timor capital, in
intimidatory action by the Indonesian military. Hawk aircraft were used in
Indonesia's invasion of East Timor in 1975. Since then 200,000 people, a third
of the population have died as a result of the occupation.

The retreat was largely a public relations exercise, however. Since it came to
office, the Labour government has consistently refused to stop arming Indonesia.
It refused to revoke the licenses, issued by its Conservative predecessor, for
the export of 16 Hawk jets and a large quantity of armoured vehicles to
Indonesia. These weapons have also been employed against the civilian population
on the domestic front. During the anti-Suharto demonstrations last year
British-made Scorpion tanks were in evidence among the security forces armoury.

France and Britain were the biggest exporters of arms to Indonesia last year. UK
exports were worth £112 million and French approximately double that amount.
Britain exported over £100 million worth of arms, including 23 armoured combat
vehicles and four Hawk jets in 1997. Information garnered from written
parliamentary answers in the year up to May 1998 by the human rights group
Amnesty International show that Labour also approved 64 export licenses for
 military equipment destined for Indonesia.

Britain has also been involved in training the country's Kospassus Special
Forces. One of the exhibitors at the forthcoming fair, the Nitor Group, provided
counter-insurgency training to the Kospassus. The latter played a critical role
in destabilising East Timor before Indonesia's invasion two decades ago and was
recently linked with the militia's terror campaign.

Indonesia is not the only instance in which Labour has been caught with its
"ethics" around its ankles. According to Amnesty International at least 30 of
the countries represented at the fair are classified as repressive regimes
 and/or torturous states.

China has been invited, despite Britain being a signature to an extensive arms
embargo introduced by the European Union in 1989 following the Tiananmen Square
massacre. The MoD described China as “a long term prospect.” Other

 CNI News---10/Sep/99 20:12
Study finds no birth defects near chems
WASHINGTON (CNI)--Residential proximity to petrochemical and steel
factories is not associated with high levels of birth defects, according
to a new study released Friday.
Writing in the British medical journal The Lancet, researchers from the
universities of Edinburgh and Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK reported that
proximity to industrial facilities was not associated with low birth
weight, stillbirths, fetal abnormalities or changes in sex ratio.
The researchers stated that they "found no evidence to support the
hypothesis that living close to [steel and petrochemical] industries led
 to adverse birth outcomes."
The size of the study - more than 27 000 birth records were examined - and
the lengthy ten-year study period suggest that the findings are highly
significant and are unlikely to be the result of statistical artifact,
 according to the researchers.
The research contradicts previous studies that have indicated that
families who live near industrial facilities have an increased risk of
 birth defects.

[CTRL] Left Terms of Corruption

 Return to The New Australian

The corruption of political terminology . . . by the Left

 By Charles Murton, Assistant Editor

 No. 133, 13-19 September 1999

'The New Australian' has received a letter from one of its long standing
readers on the left, suggesting, in a friendly fashion, that we have
used incorrect terminology in describing states such as the USSR and
China as 'socialist'. It also suggests that there has been a general
misuse of terminology amongst those opposed to Marxism, such as the
Nazis naming themselves as a 'socialist' party. Since this was a well
expressed, well mannered enquiry, and not a mindless shriek of hate
(which is what we chiefly get from the left), I am answering it in some
 depth.

It is true that political nomenclature is full of the most bizarre
inversions and misunderstandings, most of them originating on the left,
as it happens. Indeed, the very word 'left', now applied to Marx-based
philosophies, originally referred to those who believed in individual
rights (including property rights) and minimal government. In the same
way, genuine liberals, those who believe in these same things, are now
called otherwise in the United States, whereas the word 'liberal' has
been corrupted by the left in the USA to mean a person who believes in
widespread coercive intervention by the state.

The usual tendency of the left this century has been to call a society
'socialist' if: (a) it follows patterns sympathetic to Marx's ideas,
and; (b) the fiction can be maintained, no matter how tenuously, that it
is successful. When it is exposed in such a way that even its most
ardent supporters cannot ignore the truth, it is then called by some
other name to protect the hallowed name of socialism. I was raised in a
left wing family, and have more than forty years of conscious experience
of this, so I think I can speak with some authority.

While those on the ideological left still clung to the idea that the
USSR was a workers' paradise — and for most this was right up to the
1970s — then the USSR was happily described as socialist, not by the
British or Australian Labour Parties' enemies, but by their strongest
supporters. And in doing so, they were following the formal nomenclature
of Marxism — Leninism: in the evolution towards the perfect society, a
totalitarian state must be imposed at first, and the people be forced by
government sanctioned violence into a socialist way of life, and then,
over a few generations, a new type of human being will evolve, and the
state will whither away because it is no longer necessary, and you will
have communism. Thus communism was seen as the last stage of perfection,
the Arcadian end of history, while socialism was seen as the
 intermediate stage of totalitarian control.

In this sense, the use of the word 'socialist' by the 'New Australian'
to describe the loathsome Marxian slave states that have besmirched the
world since 1917 is quite correct, even in socialist terms. However, as
I stated above, when the truth about some Marxist state is revealed such
that not even the left can get away with their usual lies, then some
alternative word must suddenly be plucked out of the air to distance the
sacred word 'socialist' from the spectacle of the massive,
poverty-stricken slave pen now made visible to even the most obtuse. I
recall that in the 1960s, when it became discussible on the left that
the USSR wasn't quite the paradise it was meant to be, it was described
as not socialist, but as an example of 'state capitalism'. This
terminology was a ridiculous oxymoron, a contradiction as absurd as,
say, a square circle. I used to have great fun asking left wing
acquaintances to define it, and never found one who could.

Renaming socialist states as 'capitalist' continued well into the 70s.
In my extensive library of left wing books and literature I have two
editions of the same book on socialism. In the first, published in 1976,
Kampuchea and its leader are described as a great experiment in
socialism. In the second edition, published in 1979, Pol Pot is
described as a 'capitalist'. …A capitalist, mind you, who emptied the
cities, forced the whole population into primitive collective
agriculture, totally forbade the use of money, and murdered a third of
the population for individualist crimes (e.g. wearing a colored shirt,
or glasses, both of which were capital offenses in Kampuchea). Not even
Marx himself would fall for such idiocy.

It appears that fashions have changed since those days, to judge by the
letter. Now, if a 'socialist paradise' was at some time exposed as a
vast coffin of Marxist totalitarian evil, then it is called, in
retrospect, not capitalist, but communist(!) Which just goes to show
what a vast amount of territory the left covers in its abuse of
 language.

There are other examples. When the USSR

About the fish thing -- these may not be actual fishes. They are more
leeche-worm-eel like -- and when they die they are dark black, like tar. And
I may have something wrong about the fishing expeditions/systems itself here,
but I think not. You have heard of men saying to women or pimps saying about
prostitutes -- "selling their wares?" -- This ain't just sex. It is these
special animals. And, I go further -- a portion of the U.S. is set up, esp.
women, with implants that bring in these animals. These dead send fishes
are all over NYC streets -- and scattered by the hundreds throughout the NYC
subway system's walkways. This is NOT tar. There is NO tar in the subway
system areas -- all walks are cement. There is no tar in the subway tunnels
-- they are wood and dirt and cement. There is NO tar in the subway cars.
These tar baby things are ALL OVER the sidewalks of Manhattan. All over
them...they are NOT tar. Try scraping one of them up -- it is not the least
bit like tar. ANd it is not chewing gum. Which years ago I though it might
be. It simply is not. Scraping any of them off the street will tell you
this. I had a police officer confirm that these black things were "love
fish" -- he knew. I believe, cause I have caught 4 of them -- and have felt
the sends off of these things -- that people literally are using these to get
by and get good jobs done at doctor's offices, etc. Carrying one of these
around makes life around you much nicer -- cause of the sends they put off.
Where do they come from? Some people, not everyone, are set-up for the
catching of these. The implants in body draw in the animals -- and these
people seem ot have, I know it sound weird, but wind-tunnels which are
invisible to naked eye around em. In these tunnels these animals seem to
live -- almost like glass fish -- see though, until they are caught -- then
they take on color. I also believe that people have been used in these
stranger-than-life stories for literally centuries -- the implants used for a
long long time. And the animals fishing stuff is what many prostitutes are
set-up with -- the johns own them. It is amazing to see these fishes come
alive off the frequency draws too -- amazing. Because the catching is really
something to behond. The fishes show in a flash -- and with a strange
pancake-like face on them. This really is a real event -- not imagined. The
evidence of the fishes' existance is all around you now too -- look at these
tar babies. I am photographing this stuff in Manhattan now and NJ. The
pimps know this, that the sex trade actually IS about selling these creatures
from the deep. Ask a pimp (you know what they look like -- the well dressed,
thick haired men...Italian a lot of them) -- to show you how they catch the
send or love fish. Ask him if you pay him, if he has any for sale. Pretend
you know what you are talking about -- if he says yes, ask the price, ask to
see it, and ask him how to care for it. He won't be able to show you how
they are caught unless he has a mind control implant victim nearby -- to
catch the fish off of. THis is part of the underground workings -- girl. It
is considered pretty seedy stuff by many people. But there is a whole
cottage industry working about the procurement and use of these strange
animals. And as I said the evidence of these things being real is on the
 sidewalk.

About eugenics -- there are specialized crime groups -- called curmudgeons --
who often carry out implanting people who may become targeted for various
reasons. Once implanted, cults they begin working the victims over with mind
control programming -- often in an effort to own the person. The
curmudgeon's may work for Freemasons in communities who are targeting
particular people for elimination or torture or use in the satanic cult
protocols. The curmudgeons also handle tracking and following

Coping with Africa's Aids disaster

Aids has run rampant on the continent

An international conference on Aids has opened in the Zambian capital
Lusaka to discuss how to contain the further spread of the HIV virus, which
has become the continent's number one killer.

Thousands of people in Africa become infected with HIV every day, and the
continent is home to two-thirds of the global population of those infected
with the virus.

The impact on African economies and society has been devastating.

The top UN Aids campaigner, in Zambia to attend the conference, said the
world community had failed to mobilise to fight the disease.

Dr Peter Piot, executive director of the UN Aids agency, said half of all
newborn babies in Africa carry the HIV virus that leads to Aids.

"Aids is cutting productivity of companies, far too many people are too
sick to work, Africa's middle class is being decimated," Mr Piot told
Reuters news agency.

He said that while Western powers had found the will to deal with crises
like that in Kosovo, they had made no attempt to respond in the same way to
Aids.

The World Health Organisation's director for Africa, Ibrahim Samba, said
the disease should be declared a global disaster.

African leaders absent

Several thousand delegates at the Lusaka conference will discuss ways of
caring for those who are already HIV positive and containing the further
spread of the disease.

The main strategy under discussion is changing people's sexual behaviour to
protect those who are yet to be infected, and lobbying for cheaper drugs
that can turn Aids from a death sentence into a chronic but survivable
disease.

Since the Aids epidemic began, 34 million Africans have been infected with
HIV and almost 12 million have already died.

Southern Africa is now at the epicentre of new infections. Almost a quarter
of adults in Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe are HIV positive and
in South Africa there are an estimated 1,500 new infections every day.

There is some evidence that HIV infection rates are dropping in countries
like Uganda where national health education campaigns, political support
and increased awareness of the disease have helped.

But BBC correspondent Greg Barrow, who is in Lusaka, says that despite the
huge problems of Aids on the continent, not a single African head of state
attended the opening ceremony.

He says that, of all the speeches at the opening ceremony, it was one
delivered by an eight-year-old Zambian girl which was the most poignant:

"My best friend will turn eight next month ... Her father will not be there
to help her blow out her birthday candles. Her mother will not be there to
help her cut her birthday cake.

"They both died from Aids last year."

[CTRL] WACO: THE CULT AWARENESS NETWORK - 2/2

1999-09-13 Thread Bill Kingsbury

 -Caveat Lector-

 THE POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS

The threat to religious freedom inherent in the pseudo-
scientific theories and language of West, Singer and other
 CAN-associated psychologists, psychiatrists and sociologists
is evident. That they have been used to rationalize
criminal activity is equally evident. As early as 1974 the
National council of churches warned of CFF's danger to
 religious liberty:

[R]eligious liberty is one of the most precious
rights of humankind, which is grossly violated
by forcible abduction and protracted efforts to
change a person's religious commitments by
duress. Kidnapping for ransom is a heinous
crime indeed, but kidnapping to compel religious
deconversion is equally criminal (Arenberg,
1993, p. 60).

And if the dangerous implications of applying CAN's credo to
the political arena were not already obvious, CAN's
executive director, Cynthia Kisser, made them explicit in an
article entitled "Nation needs to address cults' ever-
present evils," written originally for the Los Angeles Daily
News and reprinted in a number of papers around the country
during the Waco siege. In it Kisser warned: "Cults also
hurt society when their members undermine the democratic
process by voting in solid blocks [sic] or by providing free
volunteer labor to campaigns in return for favors from
candidates" (Kisser, 1993). To most people this would serve
as a model description of healthy participation by an
interest group or party in a representative democracy. But
apparently to CAN only groups of which it approves should be
allowed to vote in "blocks" and volunteer for political
campaigns. When groups CAN doesn't like ("cults")
participate in electoral politics, it "undermines the
 democratic process."

Frighteningly, the FBI appears to share this way of
thinking. In 1988 and again in 1991 the Bureau launched
investigations of the New Alliance Party (NAP), a left-wing
electoral party, rationalizing this harassment by labeling
NAP a "political/cult organization" (New Alliance Party vs.
 Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1993).

Founded in 1979 and based primarily in communities of color
in our country's inner cities, over the last 14 years NAP
has run candidates for local, state and federal office in
every state and received millions of votes. In 1988 NAP's
presidential candidate, Dr. Lenora Fulani, became the first
woman and the first African American presidential candidate
in U.S. history to be on the ballot in 40 states. In both
campaigns Fulani qualified for and received federal primary
 matching funds.

The 1988 investigation , sparked by a Phoenix, Arizona
"informant of unknown reliability," included at least 24
field offices and the national headquarters, all of which
devoted federal resources to compiling dossiers on NAP. The
investigation generated numerous communications from the FBI
to law enforcement officials around the country warning
them, without cause, that NAP members--who at the time were
actively campaigning in the 1988 presidential campaign--
should be considered "armed and dangerous" (New Alliance
Party vs. Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1993).

The 1991 investigation was launched solely on the basis of
protected First Amendment activities and despite the fact
that the FBI itself had concluded that NAP had broken no
laws. As with the earlier investigation, it was buttressed
with propaganda from a private organization with its own
political agenda, in this case the Anti-Defamation League of
the B'nai B'rith. The 1991 FBI files on NAP contain an ADL
"report" attacking NAP and labeling the independent party
"part Marxist sect, part therapy cult" (FBI Airtel, July 24,
 1991).

In addition, since the distribution of PRA's cult-baiting
pamphlet in 1987, publications hostile to NAP's politics--
including the Village Voice, the Boston Phoenix, the New
York Post, and various publications of the Communist Party
of the United States--have published articles which
explicitly or implicitly apply the "cult" label to NAP. In
turn, some of these articles, or references to them, have
been incorporated into the FBI files (FBI Airtel, May 1,
 1988).

On June 24, 1993 Representative Don Edwards (D-CA), chairman
of the Subcommittee on Civil and Constitutional Rights of
the House Judiciary Committee set a letter to William
Sessions protesting the FBI investigations of NAP:

I am writing about the FBI's interest in the New
Alliance Party (NAP). This is the second time
that the FBI's handling of a NAP matter has
raised questions about the focus and management
your terrorist program. The FBI's treatment of
NAP in recent years evidences a lack of
perspective on world and national events and a
continuing focus on First Amendment activities
instead of criminal conduct...The NAP documents

WHAT IS THE CULT AWARENESS NETWORK
AND WHAT ROLE DID IT PLAY IN WACO?
   --

 INTRODUCTION

As a lobbying firm concerned with the preservation and
expansion of democracy both at home and abroad, we are
writing to draw your attention to the activities of the
Cult Awareness Network (CAN). The Cult Awareness Network
described itself as a "national non-profit organization
founded to educate the public about the harmful effects of
mind control as used by destructive cults." In fact, as the
following evidence documents, CAN has played a major role
in propagating an atmosphere of intolerance and violence
against new, smaller, non-mainstream religions (as well as
psychological movements and political groups); moreover, it
has functioned as an indirect referral agency, facilitating
"concerned" families getting touch with individuals who can
be hired to use coercion (including forcible abductions) to
remove individuals from groups of which CAN disapproves.

The influence of the Cult Awareness Network was made clear
by the role it played in influencing media coverage of the
siege and subsequent massacre of the Branch Davidians in
Waco, Texas earlier this year, and the role CAN-associated
"deprogrammers" played as advisors to the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the FBI during the siege.

 "DEPROGRAMMERS"

CAN, originally called the Citizens Freedom Foundation
(CFF), was founded in 1974 by Ted Patric, who, according to
Gerald Arenberg, writing in `The Chief of Police' magazine,
already had a "career of kidnapping young adults from young
and little understood churches in exchange for handsome fees
from distraught or overbearing parents" (Arenberg, 1993).
Information from a number of sources indicates that over the
past 19 years, persons within the CAN network have been
involved in thousands of abductions or other coercive
actions, which the perpetrators euphemistically call
"deprogrammings." "Deprogrammers" charge between $5,000 and
$20,000 for a kidnapping. The payment is usually made in
cash, so there will be no record of the transaction
 (Blocksom, 1992, p. 2). According to the organization's own
figures, reported at its national conference in Los Angeles
last year, CAN-connected "deprogrammers" were involved in
more than 1,800 "deprogrammings" in 1992 alone (Robertson,
 1993, p. 3).

On the record, CAN condemns forcible kidnappings and
maintains that it receives no financial benefits from
referring families to kidnappers. However, John Myles
Sweeney, Jr., a former national director of CAN's
predecessor, the Citizens Freedom Foundation, in a
declaration dated March 17, 1992 charged:

Because of the large amount of money they make
due to referrals received from CFF members,
deprogrammers usually kick back money to the CFF
member who gave the referral... The kickbacks
would either be in cash or would be hidden in
the form of a tax-deductible "donation" to the
CFF (Sweeney, 1992, p. 1).

Former "deprogrammer" Johnathon Lee Nordquist has charged
that in the mid-eighties CAN, through Mary Krone, then CAN's
director of information and referrals, paid for the living
expenses of Nordquist and his partner. "All that I had to
do... was make infrequent speeches at Cult Awareness Network
affiliate meetings and receive phone call from people who
wanted to hear negative propaganda about the Hare Krishna
 religion" (Nordquist, 1991, p. 24).

In addition, expense reports seized by the FBI and entered
as evidence in a court case reveal that at least one
"deprogrammer," convicted kidnapper Galen Kelly, was paid a
regular retainer of $1,500 a week in 1992 by the Cult
Awareness Network (U.S. vs. Smith, Kelly, Point and Moore,
 1992).

CAN operates its indirect referral system in a manner
intended to avoid incurring criminal or civil liability from
the activities of the "deprogrammers" in its network. Mark
Blocksom, who worked as a "deprogrammer" from 1979 to 1989,
 reports:

The standard method by which I received
referrals for involuntary deprogrammings was via
phone call the "good ole boy" network (CFF, and
later, CAN members or affiliates), who would
then refer the caller to a non-CFF/non-CAN
person (usually a family member of a prior
successful case), who would then call me and
arrange the deprogramming. This "cut out"
system was created to insulate CFF/CAN from
legal liabilities (Blocksom, 1992, pp. 1-2).

Blocksom also reports that he often consulted with CAN
officials (including the current director, Cynthia Kisser)
in the course of "deprogrammings" for the purpose of
"obtaining additional assistance, or with obtaining written
materials about a particular group" (Blocksom, 1992,

$8.50 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and students, and $5 for
children 6-16.. A telephone call to verify hours is always advisable.

The Collections

Maritime history collections reflect the work and lives of both
individuals and institutions, documenting the activities of merchants,
shipbuilders, and captains, as well as fishing, yachting, and steamship
history and operations in Salem and the Northeast. Ethnology collections
document non-European peoples from Oceania, Asia (particularly Japan,
China, India, and Korea), Africa, and North America. Natural history
collections focus on Essex County as well as other areas of the world,
particularly in the areas of ornithology, botany, and geology. The
library’s holdings also document in a comprehensive fashion the Essex
County region, and reflect the social, cultural, and economic diversity
of one of the nation’s earliest settled regions, encompassing the indust
rial cities of Lynn, Lawrence, and Haverhill; the shipping ports of
Salem, Gloucester, and Newburyport; agricultural areas; and religious
centers like Andover. Disciplinary strengths of the collections (as
reflected in regional history) include maritime history; the history of
domestic life, including children, games and toys, women, and the
family; religion and religious life, with a concentration in Puritan
studies; the decorative arts, crafts, and architecture; literary
history; and business and labor history. In addition, the Frederick
Townsend Ward collection is devoted to Western-language books and
periodicals on the history and people of China before 1912.

B

ooks and Printed Collections New England History and Genealogy
The printed collections focus substantially on Essex County history,
including county and town histories, vital records, city and town
directories, census data, tax lists, maps, and newspapers. All of these
materials complement an extensive collection of printed family histories
and genealogies to provide statistical and genealogical information
about Essex County families.

Historical information also can be gathered from the reports, circulars,
advertisements, and other publications of Essex County societies,
businesses, municipalities, and other institutions. Prominent Essex
County residents are represented by the works of mathematician and
navigator Nathaniel Bowditch, jurist Joseph Story and such literary
figures as Nathaniel Hawthorne (the library has the foremost collection
in the world), John Greenleaf Whittier, Jones Very, Lucy Larcom, and
John Updike, among others.

Expanding beyond Essex County, the library maintains substantial
collections of state, county, and town histories for all the New England
states, including town and city directories for many of the larger
communities and published vital records for most Massachusetts towns, as
well as vital records for many out-of-state communities. Published
family histories and genealogies are not limited to Essex County, but
include family branches settling in all of the New England states and
reaching as far west as Ohio.

Subject Collections

The library holds extensive collections of research material for the
study of the maritime, social, intellectual, political, and cultural
history of New England. Strongest for the period before 1860, many of
these materials came as donations to the library from local residents,
and therefore reflect their reading and collecting interests. Important
collections of cookery books, hymnbooks, railroad materials, almanacs,
greeting cards, bookplates, and English and American periodicals of the
18th and 19th centuries are available for research, in addition to
larger collections in the following areas: Belles Lettres and Popular
Literature, Religious Life and Doctrine, Travel Literature and
Geography, Reform Literature, Architecture and Related Crafts, Trade

The Voyage of the Frolic
New England Merchants and the Opium Trade
by Thomas N. Layton
[Clothbound, $24.95, Stanford University Press]
Review by Bill Meyers
The clipper ship Frolic was abandoned by its captain and crew in 1850
after it smashed into a large rock near the coast of what is now
Mendocino County. The Pomo Native Americans who were camping at the
coast at that time swam out to the ship and salvaged a variety of items
imported fresh from China. Over a century later the discovery of broken
bits of pottery and glass from the Frolic during an excavation of a
native American village would lead anthropologist Thomas Layton on an
anthropological odyssey. Layton now has given us a book, The Voyage of
the Frolic. It has something for just about everyone. For police and
drug aficionados alike it has detailed descriptions of the growth and
production of opium in India, down to how the raw opium was adulterated
and in turn tested for purity. For populists it shows how our leading
families' ancestors gained their riches through black markets. For
timber buffs it describes the single event that led directly to the
establishment of Mendocino County's first mills. For antique collectors
it has a wealth of historical knowledge about the artifacts of that era.
For those who love ships, there is much about the Baltimore clippers and
the shipping industry in the mid 1800's. And for the literary set it is
more than a good yarn.

Either the story of the Frolic or the story of the anthropological
digging would have been entertaining; woven together they are wonderful.
The book begins at Point Cabrillo in 1850, with Pomo Native Americans
watching the Frolic flounder on a rock and giving some aid to the
strange men who had abandoned the boat. Every beachcomber appreciates
the thrill of such discoveries. When the strange men left even the
broken green bottles and blue and white porcelain jars were of value,
for making arrow tips and fashioning into bead money. From the ship came
silks and other Chinese goods that had been meant for sale in San
Francisco to the newly rich gold miners, the 49'ers. What a wonderful
web of interconnections history is. There was little or no opium on the
Frolic when she wrecked, but only a few months earlier that had been her
sole cargo. She was built in Baltimore by a firm that specialized in
fast cargo ships meant to elude the authorities. In the first half of
the 19th century slavery was legal in a majority of the United States,
but importing slaves and trading in them was illegal. The same New
England merchants who had traded in slaves before the Revolution,
however, were not about to pass up a profit to be made from human
misery. The shipyard of William Gardner in Baltimore built slave ships
(they were certified as ordinary merchant ships by authorities, then
sent abroad to change ownership and be fitted with bunks and chains) and
other fast cargo ships.

The New England firm of Augustine Heard Co., who had been conducting
legitimate trade with China for decades, had decided to enter the opium
trade and commissioned the Frolic from William Gardner. China had
outlawed opium. The British grew it in Indian, and were not about to
give up their profits because of some ridiculous law. The Americans were
not about to let the British hog the whole show. And in payment, vast
quantities of tea and silk flowed to the United States. A century and a
half later we suffer from our own opium (heroin) epidemic. The Forbes
family can use its vast fortune, originally acquired in black markets,
to run a presidential candidate. In Columbia and Mexico and new
generation of entrepreneurs make their money in drugs; in two
generations perhaps their heirs will be able to buy high offices. But
eras always come to an end. The invention of the steamship did not end
the opium trade, but it did make the Frolic obsolete for that purpose.
The Frolic was only a few years old, and the gold rush created a sudden
demand for Chinese luxury goods in California. Unfortunately the Frolic
sank on her first voyage to San Francisco, the victim of bad maps, fog,
and careless sailors.

Naturally you'll have to read the book to get the wealth of detail that
makes history come alive. I have not even touched upon the divers of our
era who salvaged the wreck, Frederick Douglass's life at the Baltimore
shipyards, or light shed on the early history of Mendocino County. If
you live on the Coast, or like visiting the Coast, or just like
well-written history, you'll love this book

On The Road With Granny D
Crossing the Mississippi… and other boundaries

Damn, this woman is strong.

That’s the first impression I got from shaking the hand of Doris "Granny
D" Haddock, shortly before joining her for a stroll across the Mississippi
and into downtown Memphis.

Granny D is an 89-year-old grandmother of eleven from a small town in New
Hampshire. She’s about five feet tall. Her smile is about two feet wide.

I walked with her for about ten miles the other day, then went back to my
hotel room to write this article.

Granny D is still walking.

As you read this, she’s on a back road in western Tennessee, headed toward
Nashville. Ten miles a day. One step at a time.

She started her walk on January 1st in Los Angeles. Eventually, Granny D
will have spent more than a year walking over 3000 miles, just to raise
America’s awareness of the need for campaign finance reform.

She’ll finish the trip on January 24th, celebrating her 90th birthday on
the steps of the U.S. Capitol.

As I said: damn, this woman is strong.

___

Tuesday morning, shortly after 7 am: I meet up with Granny D in West
Memphis, Arkansas, at the exact spot along U.S. 70 where her journey had
ended the day before.

As this day’s walk begins, about a dozen other people are also joining
Granny for her daily stroll.

(A photo is at http://www.bobharris.com/scoop/memphis.htm#van)

They’ve come from every part of the country, both major political parties,
and all ages and walks of life. Asking around, I find that everyone here
has only three simple things in common: we’ve all heard about Granny’s
walk, we’ve all felt strongly enough about it to join her for at least a
portion of the journey, and (surprisingly to me, at this hour of the
morning) we’re all in a terrific mood.

The Memphis morning newspaper has printed a feature story on Granny’s
walk, including a detailed map of her route and a large photo. Already,
before we even begin, a few passing motorists are waving and honking their
support. There’s a feeling of hearty, useful activism in the air. This
feels really good.

And that’s an unusual experience for me. I’m 35, and I can count on one
hand the number of public demonstrations I’ve seen where people outside
the demonstration actually care as much as those rallying. But Granny D
has clearly struck a populist nerve.

A few minutes after 7:30, we begin.

Granny takes off surprisingly quickly. I finish the last sentences of a
conversation, look up, and realize she’s already a block away.

Clearly, my perceptions about what an 89-year-old woman can do require
some adjustment. The rest of us step lively just to keep pace.

(A photo is at http://www.bobharris.com/scoop/memphis.htm#begin)

Granny D didn’t always have this much company. Much of the early walk was
through empty desert, hundreds of miles from supporters and media
coverage. The only real danger she has faced to this point has been heat
exhaustion and dehydration in the 100-degree temperatures. Entire days
and even weeks were spent facing the elements either alone or joined by
perhaps one volunteer.

"That never mattered," Granny D tells me. "I had decided that I would go
as a pilgrim."

Her words are chosen with care. Granny’s march is largely influenced by
the memory of Mildred Norman, the McCarthy-era "Peace Pilgrim" who
criss-crossed the country six times, walking over 25,000 miles "on foot
and on faith," carrying little but a message of peace.

As the Peace Pilgrim did almost a half-century earlier, Granny began her
walk on a New Year’s Day in Pasadena. And just as the Peace Pilgrim
carried nothing and asked for nothing -- surviving merely on faith that
others would feel the same way and share a sense of community by helping
in small ways -- Granny began with little more than a sleeping bag,
willing to miss many meals and sleep under the stars in order to
communicate to the American people the importance of reforming our
democracy.

Granny’s faith in us has

Report: Lockerbie Notes Destroyed

EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) - Dozens of police notebooks that may have included
vital evidence against two Libyans charged with the 1988 bombing of Pan Am
Flight 103 have been destroyed, a Scottish newspaper reported Sunday.

Scotland on Sunday, quoting unidentified legal sources, said the police
notebooks were destroyed five years after the jumbo jet was blown up over the
Scottish village of Lockerbie, killing 270 people.

The books included notes made by officers during the painstaking collection
of fragments from the wreckage strewn over and around the Scottish village of
Lockerbie, the newspaper said.

Two Libyan agents are due to stand trial before Scottish judges sitting at a
special court in The Netherlands in February.

Police and Scotland's Crown Service, which is responsible for prosecutions,
refused to comment on the report.

``It would be inappropriate to comment about what may be evidential matters
in the Lockerbie trial,'' the Crown Service said in a statement.

[CTRL] Agent told of hearing FBI shots

1999-09-13 Thread Dan S

Agent told of hearing FBI shots
By Gabrielle Crist
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Among the evidence that may get a second look amid the latest uproar over
the FBI's conduct at Mount Carmel is a two-page document detailing an FBI
sniper's suggestion that an agent fired at Branch Davidians.

Government officials deny that agents fired shots on April 19, 1993, the
final day of the 51-day standoff, which ended when the Davidians' compound
burst into flames. Leader David Koresh and about 80 of his followers were
later found dead inside, some with burns and others with gunshot wounds.

But FBI agent Charles Riley said in June 1993 that he heard shots fired from
a sniper post occupied by agent Lon Horiuchi, according to court documents
filed in Waco as part of a wrongful death suit scheduled to go to trial next
month. The suit was filed by Branch Davidians and their relatives.

Riley's statement is among 25 volumes of motions, rulings and exhibit lists
filed in the multimillion-dollar lawsuit. An attorney for the 100 or so
plaintiffs said he is convinced that gunfire was exchanged on the final day.

James B. Francis, commissioner of the Texas Department of Public Safety,
said there is some indication that "gunfire took place there by government
police officers." Francis would not say when he believes those shots were
fired and declined to elaborate.

"It is a subject matter that needs to be investigated," he said.

Horiuchi could not be reached to comment for this report. He told
investigators in April 1993 that "none of the snipers under his control at
Sierra-1 (a sniper post) fired any rounds from their weapons."

Government officials have said that Riley retracted his initial statement,
according to Houston attorney Michael Caddell, who represents the Branch
Davidians in the lawsuit.

FBI officials in Washington declined to confirm that Riley issued a
retraction and would not comment because of an independent investigation
launched last week.

Attorney General Janet Reno ordered the investigation after FBI officials
acknowledged using as many as three pyrotechnic tear gas grenades on the
last day of the standoff. The admission is an about-face from the adamant
denials issued by the government for the past six years.

Former GOP Sen. John Danforth, who is heading the investigation, said it
will focus on whether there was a cover-up, how the fire started and whether
government officials fired shots.

Agents were authorized to use deadly force on April 19, according to a 1993
internal FBI document detailing an investigative interview with agent
Richard Rogers, an FBI supervisor.

Rogers told investigators that members of the Hostage Rescue Team were told
to provide cover for the armored vehicles that were launching tear gas into
the compound.

As the vehicles punched holes in the walls, FBI officials announced over
loudspeakers that they were delivering tear gas. They told the Branch
Davidians not to shoot and warned that FBI agents would return fire.

Although several FBI agents saw and heard Davidians firing at the vehicles
and toward the sniper positions, agents did not fire "a single shot," Rogers
said, because they "did not acquire clear and identifiable targets."

But two experts in thermal imaging will contend at the trial that images on
an infrared video show shots being fired toward the compound.

Their opinions, coupled with Riley's initial statement, "provide at least
some evidence" to support the plaintiffs' claims that Davidians were afraid
they would be shot if they tried to escape from the burning compound, U.S.
District Judge Walter Smith Jr. said in a July ruling.

Because of that evidence, Smith said in his ruling, Horiuchi should be named
as an individual defendant in the lawsuit. Smith dismissed all other
individual defendants, including numerous officials of the federal Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the FBI. Horiuchi and the United States
are the sole defendants.

A jury will decide whether Horiuchi fired at Davidians without provocation.
Smith will then decide the other issues in the case: whether the ATF used
excessive force during an aborted Feb. 28, 1993, raid and whether the FBI
started the fire and is negligent for not extinguishing it.

Caddell said he is convinced that at least some of the FBI agents fired at
the Branch Davidians, perhaps justifiably. Riley's "unpressured recollection
is a lot more believable than any of the recanting" he did five years later,
he said.

A few of the Branch Davidians probably did shoot at FBI agents and FBI
agents probably fired back, Caddell contends.

Caddell said investigators failed to collect and test all the weapons used
during the siege to determine whether FBI officials fired.

"This whole thing has been an exercise in, `Don't ask, don't tell,' " he
said.

[CTRL] No space in Africa

1999-09-13 Thread Taylor, John (JH)

The citizen 9 sep 1999

Cremation is traditional taboo

No space in Zim to bury Aids victims

HARARE - Cemeteries in Zimbabwe are becoming short of space to cope with an
Aids pandemic, now killing at lease 1 200 people a week amid chronic poverty
and economic misery.

Zimbabwe's basic death rate in 1998 was over three times higher than it
would have been without Aids. A quarter of the adult population has Aids or
the virus, according to the United Nations.

The death rate is expected to increase four fold by the year 2010, according
to the Harare-based non-governmental organisation, Southern Africa Aids
Information Dissemination Services (Safaids).

Zimbabwe was last year ranked the worst affected country in the world, with
the Unaids agency estimating that 1.5 million people, or some 25 percent of
adults were infected with the Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV), the
precursor to Aids.

Current infection rates range from 4.2 percent in a rural antenatal clinic
to 34 percent in the oldest high density suburb of the capital Mbare.

However, surveillance data compiled in July under a UN-funded project on
gender and Aids in Zimbabwe, showed that HIV percentage rates among
antenatal women varied from seven percent to 50.8 percent.

Last month, the country launched voluntary Aids testing and counselling
centres with much pomp and publicity.

The shortage of burial ground has led to a public campaign to promote
cremation, which is a taboo in traditional cultures beliefs, to save space
as Aids claims hundreds of lives daily.

Life expectancy, which peaked at 61 in 1990, has fallen to 49. According to
Safaids, without Aids life expectancy in Zimbabwe would now be around 69.5
years, but it has been reduced by 31 years. With more a quarter of the 5.5
million adult Zimbabweans HIV-infected, hundreds of thousands of children
are pushed to the brink of orphanhood.

While in 1996, there were an estimated 2.1 orphans per commercial farm in
Zimbabwe, these figures have climbed to around 10, according to the Unaids.

The government estimates that there will be over 900 000 children under 15
without parents by the year 2000. The onslaught of Aids has dented economic
growth in the form of increased medical costs, reduced household and
national incomes due to illnesses and death of workers.

 Nigeria heading "for Aids disaster"

LAGOS - Nigeria Africa's most populous country, is sleepwalking to an Aids
disaster, with little or no government action to tackle what many still see
as a "white man's disease", experts say.

"It is a disaster. There is next to no government action and no one sees
quite how serious this is," one health worker who asked not to be named told
AFP.

"The situation is really very bleak." On official figures, an estimated six
million people in Nigeria, five percent of the 108-120 million population,
have the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) that causes Aids. But Aids
workers think the real figure is double that - a new survey is due out soon
- and project that within a generation, the figure could reach 30 to 35
percent or tens of millions of people.

"The world is holding its breath in horror and anticipation of the disaster
that will befall us if we do not take effective steps to stop the spread of
Aids in our country," former Health Minister Professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti
told a gathering in Lagos earlier this year.

"It might even be too late to aver the impending disaster. Maybe we can
only ameliorate it," he said.

Under the military governments that ruled Nigeria from 1983 to May this
year, a National Aids and STD (sexually transmitted disease) Control
Programme was set up but the programme is poorly funded, officials admit.

Aids deaths are often hushed up. In one small rural clinic alone in
north-eastern Benue State, 282 people died last year of Aids but usually
Aids deaths are not recorded as such for fear of the stigma.

The outbreak of the deadly bacteria at the Washington County Fair, about 35

This is my neighborhood. Fortunately, I didn't go to the fair, but was planning to go

Seems to me the "secondary infection" is rather new, that the bacteria can be

# Clinton given Falun Gong book. AUCKLAND,NZ (AP) As China and the US sought
to mend damaged ties, Pres.Jiang Zemin gave Pres. Clinton an unusual gift:
a book defending China's ban on a popular meditation sect by purporting to
expose crimes committed by Li Hongzhi, founder of Falun Gong, the popular
outlaw group. Titled "Li Hongzhi and His Falun Gong: Deceiving the Public
and Ruining Lives," the 150 pages in English are a relentless barrage of
propaganda from China's state-run media. The book contains gruesome photo-
graphs of Chinese allegedly made so crazy by practicing Falun Gong that
they committed suicide, were killed or mutilated their family members.

SW BULLETIN - September 13, 1999

This Week's Report:

On the Origin of the Earth and the Moon

-

ON THE ORIGIN OF THE EARTH AND THE MOON
Two of the central questions in planetary and Earth science
concern the origin of the Earth and Moon. How did these two
bodies form and what forces defined their basic physical
structures? ... ... A.N. Halliday and M.J. Drake (2
installations, CH US) present a short review of current research
in this area, the authors making the following points:
 1) Advances in this field have come mainly with progress in
simulating the dynamics of planetary accretion, in measuring
isotopes that act as chronometers for early Solar System
processes, in analysis of noble gas isotopes that yield clues
about the early atmosphere, and in melting experiments at
previously unattainable pressures and temperatures. Although a
general picture may be emerging, many issues remain hotly
debated.
 2) Planet formation is believed to begin with sticking and
frictional coagulation of dust particles in a gaseous nebula that
persists in the *circumstellar disk. The particles grow in size
until there is substantial gravitational attraction between
kilometer-sized bodies, and these coalesce further. Major
collisions between small proto-planets eventually result in
objects the size of Earth.
 3) The energy of late-stage planet-building impacts would be
colossal, sufficient to melt the entire planet. *Magma oceans
would be formed, and some volatile elements would escape into
space. The most widely accepted theory for the origin of the Moon
is that it coalesced from a ring of debris produced by such a
late-stage collision between two Earth-forming proto-planets.
This "Giant Impact Theory", established over a decade ago,
explains the rotational speed of the Earth-Moon system, a
critical feature that must be reproduced by any satisfactory
model. But in spite of a growing consensus, some researchers are
still opposed to the Giant Impact Theory on both dynamical and
geochemical grounds.
 4) All isotopic data are consistent with Earth being fully
formed within 50 to 100 million years after the start of the
Solar System. The isotopic record from Moon rocks is consistent
with the formation of the Moon at about the same time.
 5) The authors conclude: "We have recently come a long way
in obtaining hard constraints on the origin of Earth and the
Moon. The issues have changed from discussion of whether or not
there was a giant Moon-forming impact to debate about the
accretion rates of the Earth and the chemical, isotopic, and
physical effects of such catastrophic accretionary scenarios."
... ... In a contiguous short review of the same research area,
Frank A. Podosek (Washington University St. Louis, US) makes the
following points:
 1) The age of the Solar System as a whole is easier to
determine than the age of Earth. The age of the Solar System is
reliably inferred from the age of *refractory element-rich
inclusions in meteorites to be approximately 4.57 billion years,
thus providing an upper limit to the age of Earth. These
inclusions are the oldest known objects in the Solar System, and
their content indicates that the Solar System did not exist for
more than approximately 1 million years before the inclusions
formed.
 2) In contrast to these ancient extraterrestrial objects,
there are no known terrestrial rocks or minerals whose formation
essentially coincides with the formation of Earth, and therefore
the age of Earth must be inferred indirectly. Several independent
approaches indicate that Earth formed approximately 100 million
years later than the Solar System as a whole.
 3) All the various isotopic chronometers are intrinsically
capable of considerably higher precision, but this precision
cannot yet be realized. It is not even clear whether the
chronometers are consistent or in conflict with each other. All
methods rely on models of varying complexity involving
assumptions difficult to verify and parameters difficult to
measure.
 4) The author concludes: "For testing the giant impact
scenario in particular, it would be useful to have a quantitative
theory for whether a

It doesn't take an expert to see this happening. It will be somewhat like
"Animal Farm", soon the police will be indistinguishable from the military.
It has already eroded civil liberties and encroaches on protections that we
used to have, like the Posse Comitatus act, by having the police do the work
with the military in support, with weapons and advice. It is just a way of
getting around their direct intervention, which would still alarm some
people. There will come a day though when the activity of the police is
identical to that of the military ad then no one will notice and it will be
over for freedom.

Louis Alaniz sneaked into Mount Carmel less than a
month after the botched raid by agents with the Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in February 1993. He
left the Davidians' residence April 17, 1993 -- two days
before the fire that killed Koresh and 75 of his followers,
including children. FBI and ATF agents -- even the CIA,
Alaniz claims -- grilled him in to the early morning hours
 after he left Mount Carmel.

Alaniz left hoping to act as a mediator of sorts between
 the Davidians and the government.

"I drew a diagram of the building," said Alaniz, who now
lives in Louisiana. "I told them, `These people don't want
 to fight.' "

He told authorities that hay was stacked against Mount
Carmel's walls to stop bullets and lanterns were in some
 rooms, Alaniz said.

A Texas law enforcement official, who asked not to be
named, confirmed that Alaniz reported the Davidians
were using hay as a barricade.

Alaniz said he decided to sneak into Mount Carmel after
hearing people talk about the Davidians while he was
riding a bus in Houston, where he was living at the time.
People were saying the government should kill all of
them, he said. Much of his time at Mount Carmel was
spent reading the Bible and talking with the Davidians,
Alaniz said. He sensed while inside that things weren't
going well, and he decided to leave.

"There was so much aggression going on that I knew
they (the law enforcement officials on the scene) were
fixing to do something," Alaniz said. "The government
was cursing them, mooning them, shooting the finger at
girls standing in the windows. I saw more evil on the
outside than I did on the inside."

Worried about the Davidian children, Alaniz said he told
authorities that there was a nursery on the second floor
where the infants slept. Lanterns were kept there, he
reported, to give the mothers light while they bathed
 their children.

Clive Doyle, a Davidian who survived the fire, said there
was no central nursery at Mount Carmel. However, he
said all the women slept with their children on the
second floor. Men, under orders from Koresh, slept on
the first floor. Diagrams of Mount Carmel that appeared
in the media before the fire noted the segregated
 sleeping arrangements.

Alaniz said he was shocked to see tear gas rip into the
second floor on April 19, 1993.

"Why did they have to hit that spot?" Alaniz asked. "That
told me they didn't care. If they did, they wouldn't have
pumped gas inside there, where the infants were. . . .
 They wanted them all dead."

FBI officials at the time said they believed the Davidian
women would flee with their children in the face of a tear
 gas assault.

   Janet Reno
   The Independent Attorney General.

   By David Plotz
   Posted Friday, September 10, 1999, at 9:30 a.m. PT

Attorney General Janet Reno has always been viewed as the least
Clintonian member of the Clinton administration. Her boss
believes
words are deeds and images are action. The self-styled "awkward
old
maid," immune to the blandishments of Beltway power, is
supposedly
the beefy substance of this superficial government.

What a stupid, silly article! Reno was a Dade County Corrupt Hack
who was brought to DC by Hilliary because she was so
blackmailable.
(The countless stories of her drunk driving stops and caught on
tape
with underage teenage hookers) is legendary in Fla.The only
reason
she passed Senate Confirmation was because the gutless
RepubliCrats were too intimitated to give the "first female AG"
tough
scrutiny. (Plus Orin Hatch was still hanging on a limb
because of his involvement with the BCI scandal.) This in spite
of the fact that the Senate confirmation committee was swamped
with voluntary testimony by many many Fla. cops and lawyers who
wanted to spill the beans on Reno).

Reno is desperate for power. Will do anything to hold on to
power. She cold bloodedly poison gassed and fried the Waco Kids.
Took Fake Responsililty after Hubbell, Bill and Hilliary ordered
her to
end the standoff ( gave them bad press, dontchaknow).

She appointed "Independent Counsels" to investigate mostly
minority Cabinet Members while letting Dirty Bill off the hook on
ChinaGate, DonorGate, FileGate. Ever since that undisclosed
"private meeting" between her and Dirty Bill right after he got
himself
reelected, she has been his number #1 Block and Tackle.

Reno is a sick, venal, corrupt murderer.
She is Dirty Bill's Himmler.

herewith submitted as an Oped piece, or Letter to the Editor.

WACO: Key Issue Missing Evidence Ignored by Congress and Media
 by
 Michael Levine

I find it almost tragicomic at how mainstream media talking head and
Congress continue to miss—either intentionally or by ignorance of their
subject matter —what are the real legal and historical issues involved in the
massacre of 80 American citizens at the hands of government agents at Waco,
which are: Did the Bureau opf Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms (BATF) act in
violation of the US Constitution, Federal and State law in the first place in
taking any potentially deadly action against David Koresh and his followers?
Were, what is commonly referred to as "The Rules of Engagement" violated?
And, has evidence of them violating the Rules of Engagement been illegally
 destroyed or hidden?
If the Rules of Engagement were not violated—since there is no such crime
as "overkill"—the use of pyrotechnics and military, the current media focus
and furor, at worst, will only be perceived as a series of regrettable
"errors in judgment" for which some low level people may or may not be held
 accountable.
Before going further it is important that the American public,
particularly journalists now covering this issue, understand that, according
to the Rules of Engagement, before a US law enforcement officer is permitted
to resort to the use deadly force, the following conditions must exist:
 1. The officer must be in fear for his/her own life, or the life of
 others.
 2. The Use of Deadly Force must be the last and only recourse.
Just the fact that Congressman Charles Schumer (now Senator) is being
left out of the debate should tell anyone who understands the Rules of
Engagement that the current media coverage is missing the point and to a
great extent continuing to obfuscate the real issue.
During Congressman Schumer's hearings into the events at Waco—the Clinton
administration's alleged search for Truth— the first question that should
have been answered is: When the BATF first used deadly force, did they truly
believe their lives were in danger, and was it their last and only recourse?
Top level BATF brass testified before Congressman Schumer that the
Davidians "ambushed" the raiding agents by firing at them first through two
steel doors and that the agents returned fire to defend themselves, thus
placing their actions clearly within the parameters of the Rules of
Engagement. They said that the opening barrage fired by the Davidians, was
so forceful that the doors actually "bowed outward"
Now, if this powerful testimony, rubber stamped and trumpeted all across
mainstream media was true, all use of deadly force that followed was, albeit
arguably, justified, whether or not they "mistakenly" set the place on fire.
On the other hand, if this assertion was false, every potentially deadly
act the agents took was clearly both a Federal and Texas State felony.
Either way, since there is no such crime as "overkill" the question of who
used what pyrotechnic devices and/or whether or not the military was used,
and/or who knew what and when after the initial use of deadly force —the
current focuses of all mainstream media reportage—are at best moot questions.

Now here's were Congressman Schumer comes in. According to testimony
before his committee, there were two pieces of evidence that should have
proved that the government agents acted,a s they claimed, within the Rules
of Engagement in resorting to deadly force. The BATF

[CTRL] [Fwd: FC: National Tax Association on Internet taxes]

1999-09-13 Thread Bill

 -Caveat Lector-

Declan McCullagh wrote:

"Internet Tax Panel Backs a Single Rate for Each State"
 Bloomberg News (09/09/99)

The National Tax Association (NTA) has released a report that
addresses the issue of Internet taxes by recommending a uniform
stales tax rate for all states. However, the recommendation is
dependent on agreements being reached on other issues concerning
state and local taxes, according to the NTA electronic commerce
group. "We like the vote we took on one rate per state, but
that's contingent on a lot of things we never got to," said Mark
Nebergall, a co-author of the report and member of the Software
and Information Industry Association. The NTA electronic
commerce group also includes members from America Online and
other companies. The tangle of state and local tax laws poses a
serious compliance problem for retailers. The NTA report
discusses three possible solutions to this problem: that
multi-state retailers register, file, and pay taxes in one state
only; that electronic technology be used to manage payment of
sales and use taxes; and that each state take responsibility for
collecting taxes. Multi-state retailers are hit especially hard
by complying with the current tax system, according to a report
from Ernst Young. National Tax Association members will
testify next week when the Advisory Commission on Electronic
 Commerce meets in New York.

[CTRL] Blood on Nike's Sneakers: 9/11 NYC leafleting (fwd)

NY Group Calls on Nike to Oppose
Indonesian Army's East Timor Bloodbath

A New York-based activist group, the Global Sweatshop Coalition,
charges that the Nike Corporation "will have blood on its sneakers
if it doesn't use "its cozy relationship with the Indonesian military
and its economic leverage over the Indonesian government to end the
horrors in East Timor."

The coalition notes that "Nike is one of the US corporations doing
the most business in Indonesia," employing "tens of thousands of
young Indonesians...under sweatshop conditions in some 10-12
different factories to produce Nike sneakers... [T]he virulently
anti-union Indonesian military is always ready to accommodate
Nike."

Last December the coalition sponsored a People's Tribunal on
Corporate Crimes Against Humanity, naming Nike as a defendant. The
keynote speaker was investigative journalist Allan Nairn, who is
now the only US journalist still reporting from East Timor.

The Global Sweatshop Coalition will be leafleting shoppers at
Nike's flagship New York store on Saturday, September 11, asking
asking them to call Nike to demand that the corporation pressure
the Indonesian government to stop the violent. The action will take
place from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on the south side of 57th Street between
Madison and Fifth Avenues.

[Flier for distribution at Niketown on Saturday, September 11, 1999]

Does Nike have blood on its sneakers?

End Indonesia's reign of terror in East Timor

Over the past week, the Indonesian military and its paramilitary
groups have killed hundreds of people in the former Portuguese
colony of East Timor, and have driven about one-fourth of the
800,000 East Timorese into exile.

Despite these well-documented atrocities, the Clinton
administration refuses to do the two things that would certainly
stop the Indonesian military: cut off the flow of US weapons and
suspend credit from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other
international lenders.

On September 9 the New York Times explained: "Washington has been
reluctant to threaten a cutoff of the aid for fear that the result
would be a new economic collapse in Indonesia," which might "harm
American corporations that have large investments in Indonesia."

Nike is one of the US corporations doing the most business in
Indonesia. Tens of thousands of young Indonesians work under
sweatshop conditions in some 10-12 different factories to produce
Nike sneakers. In just one plant, Pou Chen, 23,000 workers make 10
million pairs of Nike shoes for export each year.

It's not hard to see why Nike likes making sneakers in Indonesia.
Workers' real wages have fallen there by 30% in just the last two
years; Pou Chen and Nike are said to have saved $16 million during
that time on labor costs. And the virulently anti-union Indonesian
military is always ready to accommodate Nike. Last week, for
example, the military deployed soldiers at the Pou Chen plant just
as the workers' union labor agreement expired.

Nike could be using its cozy relation with the Indonesian military
and its economic leverage over the Indonesian government to end the
horrors in East Timor. It should do it now--or else Nike will have
blood on its sneakers.

---
What you can do

1) Call Nike president Phil Knight (503-671-6453) and tell him to
use his influence with the Indonesian government and military to
push for an end to the violence in East Timor.

2) Stay informed. Two Indonesian labor organizers will be visiting
New York colleges next month: Haryanto, who was fired by Nike for
union organizing, and Dita Sari, who was jailed by the military for
three years for her labor activists. Contact us for more
information.

3) Build the case against Nike. In February or March we're holding
the second phase of our People's Tribunal on Corporate Crimes
Against Humanity. Nike is one of the defendants. Stay in touch for
more information.

Personnaly, I need some "sign" that he will clean house and remove that

   Buchanan rethinks GOP run

He may seek backing on Reform Party
   ticket

   September 13, 1999

   FREE PRESS NEWS SERVICES

WASHINGTON -- Lagging badly in his
   quest for the Republican presidential
   nomination, Patrick Buchanan said
Sunday he was strongly leaning toward
switching to a run for the Reform
   Party nomination.

"The door really is wide open,"
Buchanan said on NBC's "Meet the
Press." "We are very close to making
   that decision."

Buchanan wants to decide by Oct. 15
whether to seek the Reform Party
   nomination.

   The initial reaction from Reform
   Party officials was mixed.

   Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, the
   highest-ranking officeholder in the
Reform Party, has been wary of
   Buchanan.

   On Friday, the Capitol Hill
   newspaper, the Hill, published an
interview in which Ventura ruled out
"a retread from another campaign or
another party" as the Reform Party's
   candidate.

But Pat Choate, the Reform Party's
   vice-presidential nominee in 1996,
said party members would "work their
   hearts out" for Buchanan.

Buchanan said he is being swayed by
the belief that "my party at the
national level has become a Xerox
   copy, basically of the Democratic
   Party."

The idea of a third-party candidacy
by Buchanan is making the Republican
   front-runner, Texas Gov. George W.
   Bush, nervous, Time magazine reported
in its issue on newsstands today.

It said a private poll conducted by
Frank Luntz, a GOP consultant, found
Buchanan would win 6 percent of the
vote in a three-way contest with Bush
and Vice President Al Gore, who is
   leading for the Democratic
   nomination. Two-thirds of the
Buchanan vote, the poll found, would
   come from Bush supporters.

Individual Donors to George W. Bush's Presidential Campaign

George W. Bush is releasing daily lists of donors to his campaign.
However, he is only doing so in the inconvenient PDF format. I am
posting here the ASCII text extracted from those PDF documents and
posting them as tab-delimited documents that can be easily imported into
any good spreadsheet or database, from which they can be searched,
sorted, etc.
•The complete individual donor list for July 1, 1999 through August 27,
1999 in tab delimited text format (about three megabytes; some browsers
will crash when attempting to load this. I recommend saving it on your
local drive and importing it into a database or spreadsheet.)
•Same document in gzip format through anonymous ftp (about 728K)

•The same document in XML (about eight megabytes) or as gzipped XML (a
little more than 900K)

•Contributions for the second quarter of 1999 in comma separated values
format, gzipped from the Bush web site (This appears to include the
actual documents as submitted to the FEC. The format is not quite
identical to the one I've reverse engineered. It includes a little more
separation of data values than I was able to conveniently derive from
the PDF file. I'm going to try to bring mine in line with what's in this
document. )

The conversion program is very rough, and may have flaws. Please let me
know of any problems you find (e.g. a dollar amount where you'd expect
to see a date or some such) by emailing me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
There are definitely areas for improvement. I don't separate the
individual pieces of a name so it's not yet possible to sort by last
name. Similarly city and state aren't yet separate. I'm working on this.
Of course, the Bush campaign could just make this all moot by releasing
their data in its original format...

I omitted the RCPT (recipient) field from the original PDFs because as
far as I could tell it always had the same value, "P", and I didn't know
what that meant. I also omitted some comments that were in the original
file such as "REATTRIBUTION OR REDESIGNATION REQUESTED (AUTOMATIC)" and
"REFUND HAS OCCURRED". I may try to add these back in in the future.

So far I'm only doing this for Bush because as far as I know he's the
only one who's made this data available, albeit in an inconvenient
format. I encourage other campaigns to do so as well. I also encourage
them to use a much more basic, simple format than PDF so I don't have to
do all this for them!

Please excuse the roughness of this page. I'm concentrating on quickly
posting complete, tab delimited files. I want to expand this to cover
corporate and PAC donations as well as making it available in HTML, XML,
and Microsoft Excel formats. I also want to automatically update my
files to match the new Bush files as they're posted every day. I'm still
working on these.

From Reuters:

His Web site, www.georgewbush.com, lists the donor's name as well as
employer and occupation, provided such information is provided or can be
obtained. It also lists the amount of the donation and the donor's home
city and state.

But since it cannot be downloaded, there is no computer-enhanced ability
to sift through the information.

To do it by hand would cost thousands of dollars and require thousands
of hours, consumer spokespersons said.
Actually it took me about six hours and $0.00 :-)

And which segment of the populace will rise first--will it be the ghettos,
whose inmates can be easily identified and isolated...or the suburbs? It
does not pay to underestimate middle-class rage. The two greatest
revolutions prior to the 20th century, the American and French revolutions,
were middle-class affairs...and the middle class is being royally screwed by

[CTRL] sworn affidavit to take down the Branch Davidians at Mount Carmel.

1999-09-13 Thread Bard

 -Caveat Lector-

Updated: Sunday, Sep. 12, 1999 at 00:13 CDT

Military forces' role in Waco challenged
By Jennifer Autrey
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

The images of Bradley fighting vehicles punching holes in the wooden
compound of the Branch Davidian sect and of helicopters hovering overhead as
the structure burned have become etched in America's collective psyche.

The extent and legality of the military involvement in the 51- day siege at
the Mount Carmel compound near Waco six years ago is expected to be a focus
of upcoming investigations into the fiery end of the siege on April 19,
1993. The bodies of sect leader David Koresh and about 80 of his followers
were recovered in the fire's remains. Among questions surrounding the
operation is how military personnel, equipment and munitions were used and
whether the government had a role in setting the blaze that consumed the
compound. At the heart of the questions about military involvement is the
Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the armed forces from participating in
civilian law enforcement operations.

Some issues expected to be examined are:

* The involvement of the Delta Force, an elite, top-secret Army unit
established to combat terrorism. Some former government officials say the
Delta Force had a greater role in the operation than the FBI acknowledges
and, as a result, violated the Posse Comitatus Act.

In a sworn affidavit, a former sergeant first class in Army Special Forces
said a noncommissioned officer told him that the Delta Force's "B" Squadron
had been ordered to "take down" the Branch Davidians at Mount Carmel.

* Whether federal officials used a 1990 change in the Posse Comitatus Act --
allowing the use of the military in anti-drug operations -- to assist the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the FBI in the Waco siege and
assault.

When the ATF asked the military for help in staging its initial raid of the
compound on Feb. 28, 1993, military officers said the ATF would have to
reimburse the Army for any assistance because there was "no known drug
nexus," according to Lt. Col. Lon Walker, an Army liaison to the ATF.

Less than a month later, the ATF added "drug activity" to the matters it was
investigating in regard to the Branch Davidians, a move that a congressional
report called "deliberately misleading."

* Possible violations of Texas and Alabama state laws prohibiting the use of
National Guard personnel and equipment against the Branch Davidians.

Texas law prohibits the use of the Texas National Guard in civilian law
enforcement unless there is a clear drug connection. Alabama law says its
National Guard force has no authority outside state boundaries.

National Guard personnel and equipment from both states were used at Mount
Carmel. A congressional report has determined that those actions were taken
without proper authority.

Delta Force

Recent revelations indicate that the Delta Force had a greater presence and
a more active role in the final assault on the Branch Davidians than FBI
officials have acknowledged. According to at least one account, the Delta
Force was there not to advise, but to kill.

Steven Barry, a retired Special Forces sergeant who sometimes trained
members of the Delta Force, gave a sworn affidavit to plaintiffs' attorneys
in a civil suit brought by families of dead Branch Davidians. The case is
scheduled to go to trial in Waco on Oct. 18.

In the affidavit, Barry quoted a friend in the Delta Force as saying the
unit set up a tactical operations center during the siege that was staffed
by 10 to 20 soldiers.

Barry said another friend in the Delta Force told him that the unit's "B"
Squadron had been ordered to "take down" Branch Davidians. Barry said he
understood from his experience in the Special Forces that "take down" meant
to kill people identified as terrorists.

Barry isn't alone in these allegations.

Former CIA officer Gene Cullen has said in several recent interviews that he
learned through casual conversations with Delta Force members that 10 of the
unit's commandos were present during the April 19, 1993, assault and may
have participated.

Similarly, James B. Francis, commissioner of the Texas Department of Public
Safety, said "it is clear" that members of the Delta Force were on the
scene. Initial reports indicated that three members were present, but
Francis said he is now being told that as many as 10 were there.

"There is some evidence that might indicate that they were more than
observers," Francis said. "It is fuzzy as to what their role was."

Francis said law enforcement officials and civilians have provided first-
and second-hand reports on Delta Force activities. He declined to elaborate
further.

Evidence gathered after the Mount Carmel fire was in the hands of Texas law
enforcement officials until U.S. District Judge Walter Smith Jr. ordered all
evidence surrendered to the federal clerk in Waco.

Government attorneys have indicated in some court documents that as many as

East Timor on the Brink

Noam Chomsky interviewed by David Barsamian KGNU, Boulder, September 8, 1999

DB: Noam Chomsky, long-time political activist, writer and professor of
linguistics at MIT, is the author of numerous books and articles on U.S.
foreign policy, international affairs and human rights. Among his many
books are Year 501, Keeping the Rabble in Line, World Orders Old and New,
Class Warfare and The Common Good. His new book is The New Military Humanism.

This special edition of Alternative Radio will focus on East Timor, which
is once again a killing field with mass murders, expulsionsaand ethnic
cleansing. According to a story in this today's New York Times, East
Timorese are being rounded up and forcibly moved across the border to
Indonesian West Timor. Joining us from his home in Massachusetts is MIT
professor Noam Chomsky, who was, along with his colleague Ed Herman,
probably the first to write about East Timor in their book Washington
Connection and Third World Fascism.

Noam, the situation in East Timor has gone from bad to worse. You have
written an article for the MoJo Wire on why Americans should care about
East Timor.

NC: The primary reason is that there's a lot that we can do about it. The
second reason is it's a huge catastrophe. Actually, it's considerably worse
than when I wrote a couple of weeks ago. And there is a bit of history
involved. The U.S. has been directly and crucially involved in supporting
the Indonesian invasion, arming it, carrying it through the worst
atrocities, which were in the late 1970s under the Carter Administration
and pretty much right up till today. But putting aside history, we can do a
lot. This is a place where the U.S. has plenty of leverage, can act to stop
something which, if the U.S. doesn't act, might turn into a Rwanda, and
that's not an exaggeration.

DB: In your essay you say that "President Clinton needs no instructions on
how to proceed." Then you go on to describe some events that happened in
late 1997 and in the spring of 1998. What exactly went on?

NC: What went on is that General Suharto, who had been the darling of the
U.S. and the West generally ever since he took power in 1965, carrying out
a huge mass murder, the CIA compared it to the slaughters of Hitler and
Stalin and Mao, described it as one of the great mass murders of the
twentieth century, it was very much applauded here. He wiped out the main,
the only popular-based political movement, a party of the left, killed
hundreds of thousands of peasants, opened the place up to Western
investment, virtual robbery, and that was greeted very warmly. And so it
remained, through atrocity after atrocity, including the invasion of East
Timor, which was supported very decisively by the U.S. and up until 1997.
In 1997 he made his first mistake. One thing was he was beginning to lose
control. If your friendly dictator loses control, he's not much use. The
other was, he developed an unsuspected soft spot. The International
Monetary Fund (IMF), meaning the U.S., was imposing quite harsh economic
programs which were punishing the general population for the robbery
carried out by a tiny Indonesian elite, and Suharto, for whatever reason,
maybe fearing internal turmoil, was dragging his feet on implementing
these. Then came a series of rather dramatic events. They weren't much
reported here, but they were noticed in Indonesia, widely, in fact. In
February 1998, the head of the IMF, Michel Camdessus, flew into Jakarta and
effectively ordered Suharto to sign onto the IMF rules. There was a picture
taken which was widely circulated in Jakarta and Australia showing a kind
of humble Suharto sitting at a table with a pen and an imperious-looking
Camdessus standing over him with his arms folded and some kind of caption
saying, Typical colonial stance. Shortly after that, in May 1998, Madeleine
Albright telephoned Suharto and told him that Washington had decided that
the time had come for what she called a "democratic transition," meaning,
Step down. Four hours later, he stepped down. This isn't just cause and
effect. There are many other factors. It's not just pushing buttons. But it
does symbolize the nature of the relationship.

There's very good reason to believe that if the Clinton Administration took
a strong stand, made it very clear to the Indonesian generals that this
particular game is over, it would be over. I doubt very much, though there
is talk about an intervention force, which the U.S. is refusing to make any
commitment to, and about sanctions, which the U.S. is also dragging its
feet on, and there are other, even weaker measures that could be considered
that could be very effective, such as, for example, threatening the
Indonesian generals with war crimes trials, which is

The British Empire, c.1497-1800

Compiled by Michael S. Smith

This is a guide to Britain's territories, colonies, and
possessions from the fifteenth century to the end of the eighteenth
century, the period covered by the English Short Title Catalogue. The
aim of this guide is to provide easy reference to all of Britain's
possessions during this period and to more fully define the scope of the
ESTC. "The British Empire," used generally here to signify the period
from the creation of England's first colony (outside Ireland) through
the eighteenth century, is a term with several connotations. It
sometimes refers to the period beginning in 1603 when James VI and I,
upon ascension, "joined" Scotland with England and Wales. Scotland's
union with England, however, did not occur formally until 1707, from
which point the term "Great Britain" is used officially. The "Empire"
can also refer (as is usually the case) to the aggrandizement of
Britain's possessions over the course of the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries, and to the eventual decline of the empire in the twentieth.
Due to the current chronological limits of the ESTC, however, this guide
does not deal with any aspects of the British Empire after 1800.
"British possessions" includes all forms of imperial rule,
whether settlements, royal colonies, dominions, or protectorates. While
the technical differences between types of possessions are not applied
in this guide, every British territory is listed from the time it came
under British control to the time (if applicable within the ESTC's
scope) it gained independence. Thus this guide is contained under four
main headings: the name of the possession, the year it was acquired, the
year of independence, and relevant comments to explain changes in the
status of the territory and changes in territorial "ownership." The fate
of colonies after 1800 is excluded. Users of this guide should also be
aware of the following:

middot US MARC country codes are given for each territory and
are included in brackets under each territory's name. If a US MARC
country code does not exist for a particular territory, "no code" is
listed.

middot For ease of use, some territories which comprise a larger
regional entity are included under the name of the larger entity, even
if anachronistic. So, for example, the provinces now part of Canada are
listed under "Canada," despite its later creation, and the Thirteen
Colonies are listed under "United States." In these cases, the US MARC
country codes are not given for separate provinces, states, or
territories because the ESTC uses only the codes of the larger entities.

The main sources used for this guide are T. O. Lloyd, The British
Empire 1558-1983 (Oxford, 1984) and John Stewart, The British Empire: An
Encyclopedia of the Crown's Holdings, 1493 through 1995 (London, 1996).

Catholic church may cut money to homeless shelter over condoms

A homeless shelter in Des Moines, Iowa, may lose financial and volunteer
support from a local Catholic parish because the shelter distributes
condoms, the Omaha World Herald reports. The condoms are distributed at the
Churches United shelter as part of a health program meant to reduce STD
transmission.

The Rev. Frank Chiodo of the Basilica of St. John, one of the churches that
helped found the shelter eight years ago, said he had complained to the
shelter's board about the condoms. "It's not an issue of birth control, per
se," Chiodo told the paper. "I don't have the right to tell non-Catholics
not to use birth control." He said his objection to the condoms was that
they are "the means to continue addictive, dysfunctional behavior."

Chiodo's congregation contributes less than 10% of the shelter's $439,000
annual budget.

Well, in that case, "the end" has been at hand for something on the order of

Re: [CTRL] Reno: Courageous Cluelessness?

1999-09-13 Thread Gavin Phillips

 -Caveat Lector-

This is all garbage. Reno is an avaricious totally self-absorbed carcass,
devoid of any human compassion or integrity. And that is why she was
appointed AT by Hillary and Bill.

JANET RENO

Janet Reno is the lynch pin holding Bill and Hillary Clinton in power. Bill

and Hillary knew that to stay in power they needed an Attorney General who

would do everything to stonewall and sabotage any and all investigations into

they’re past/future transgressions.

Janet Reno had exactly the “qualifications” they were looking for.

During Reno’s tenure as Dade County State Attorney, Miami became

a haven for drug dealers, money launderers and corrupt politicians.

She had made her name on some very dubious child abuse cases.

Was a female.

Most importantly, Reno was completely controllable because of her debased

personal (more later) life and could be replaced immediately if the need

arose by leaking that information.

The problem facing the Clinton’s was how to get her through the Senate

Confirmation process and FBI background checks which she would surely fail if

scrutinized too closely. According to investigative journalist Chris Ruddy’s

(www.newsmax.com) source, who was an acquaintance of Reno, the Clinton’s

devised a clever

plan to get her endorsed. Bill nominated Zoe Bird, who seemed to be passing

the background checks, when FBI files were leaked showing that she hadn’t

paid social security taxes on her hired help. She withdrew. Next up was Kimba

Wood. Guess what, more leaks that she also had not paid taxes for her hired

help. The Clinton’s nominated Reno and simultaneously brought pressure on the

Senate to speed the process, via the press, because of the heightening Waco

conflagration. It worked like a charm.

It didn’t take long for Reno to show her inhumanity when she ordered the

disastrous federal assault on the Davidian shacks, burning and killing some
80

human beings. Reno said that authorities had not violated the Posse

Comitatus act which prohibits the use of military personal or equipment being

used in domestic incidents. When asked about the tanks used, she said they

were “like a good rent-a-car.” In May 1995 Reno told a group of law

enforcement officers that, “There is much to be angry about when we talk
about

Waco--and the government’s conduct is not the reason. David Koresh is the

reason...”

Janet Reno fired all 94 United States Attorneys, a move unprecedented in U.S.

history. Reno fired FBI director William Sessions on July 19, the day before

Vince Foster was found dead. Reno replaced him with Louis Freeh.

Janet Reno has worked overtime trying to stymie investigations into
Chinagate.

According to Chris Ruddy, “Reno refused to authorize a wiretap request in

1997, when the FBI wanted to monitor Los Alamos espionage suspect Wen Ho Lee.

According to Investor’s Business Daily, this was the only wiretap request she

denied out of almost 2,700.” (see www.newsmax.com)

When Independent Council Donald Schmalz was investigating whether Don Tyson

had made illegal gifts to Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy, Schmalz came
across

information that Clinton, then governor of Arkansas, took cash bribes. One of

Tyson’s pilots testified that he had given cash to Clinton’s state trooper

bodyguards. One or more troopers supported the pilots testimony. Schmalz

wanted to expand his jurisdiction but Reno blocked his every move.

In the February 1999 issue of Media Bypass magazine, by Pat Shannan,

Florida attorney Jack Thompson states that Janet Reno is completely

compromised in her position as Attorney General because of her closet

lesbianism and very heavy drinking. Thompson says that he knows of at least

one case in which Reno dropped charges because the people involved threatened

to expose her lesbian sexuality.

In 1987 Jack Thompson had gathered evidence of a child pornography
ring

which he gave to Reno who was State Attorney at the time. Reno said she would

look into it, but then suddenly dropped the investigation. Thompson says, "I

knew she was a lesbian, and that troubled me as a Christian, but it doesn't

disqualify her as Attorney General or as State Attorney at that time..."129

The problem was that Reno is hiding the fact that she is a lesbian and

heavy drinker. Thompson had accumulated evidence proving that Reno had ceased

investigating the case because the perpetrators had threatened to expose her.

In 1988 Thompson was the Republican nominee for Dade County State

Attorney. It was at this time that Thompson called a press conference,

attended by 21 media representatives, and publicly accused Reno of not

prosecuting the child pornography case because the people involved threatened

to expose Reno's lesbianism. The story was completely suppressed by the
media,

not a word of this incredible accusation ever found it's way into any of the

21 news entities present that day.

 Farewell, my lovely

 The Assassination of Marilyn Monroe
 Donald H Wolfe Warner Books, 660pp, £7.99

 Nicola Upson

PictureHow can Americans still live so contentedly with the Kennedy myth?
While Monica Lewinsky can sleep safely in the knowledge that cover-ups aren't
what they used to be, the the truth behind the death of Marilyn Monroe remains a
blur of rumour, lies and misinformation. Although we may have despaired of
knowing the truth about her, we've never grown weary of searching it out.

Despite its provocative title and the shocking revelations that Monroe was
brutally raped in front of Frank Sinatra just a week before being given a lethal
injection by her former lover, Bobby Kennedy, The Assassination of Marilyn
Monroe (now out in paperback) is a quietly written testimony that moves
relentlessly towards a conclusion that is both plausible and convincing. Until
politics loses its self-interest (and Birnam Wood removes to Dunsinane) there
will not be a definitive book on the Monroe case, but this chilling account,
drawing on key witnesses who have never before spoken out, may well be as good
as it gets. Sensational though it is, this is the most plausible account of all
the Monroe books I have read.

Wolfe provides an exhaustive exploration of Monroe's life, but the value of his
work lies, inevitably, in the light he sheds on her death. Taking advantage of
40 years of medical advances and the testimony of prominent medical examiners,
he blows apart the original autopsy verdict of "probable suicide" by showing
that, although Monroe had a high level of barbiturates in her blood, no trace
was found in her digestive tract, and the fatal dose could only have been
administered by injection. The verdict: homicide, with enough drugs in her body
to kill 15 to 26 people.

Hollywood and the Kennedys were quick to publicise reasons why Monroe should
take her life. Her dismissal by 20th Century Fox for "spectacular absenteeism"
from the filming of Something' s Got to Give - and in particular for leaving the
set to sing at the president's birthday gala - was documented in the press at
the time. But the rumours, fuelled by Bobby's brother-in-law, the actor Peter
Lawford, were unfounded; 16 days after her humiliating dismissal, Fox's star was
reinstated on a higher salary. Far from being depressed and suicidal, Monroe was
 flying high.

Her triumph was the beginning of the end. Cut off from the presidency as a
security threat and encouraged by her victory with Fox, Monroe called a press
conference for the Monday after her death, to expose the Kennedys. The threat
was enough to incite efforts to keep her quiet. She was invited to Cal-Neva for
a party orchestrated to ensure her silence. There, in the presence of Sinatra, a
Kennedy supporter, and the mafia boss Sam Giancana, she was drugged, sexually
abused and photographed. The pictures, claims Sinatra's photographer, were to be
used to discredit her and stop her going to the press.

They were never needed, because a week later Monroe was dead. Wolfe's concluding
account of her final hours is compulsive, revealing, through the testimony of
Norman Jeffries, Monroe's caretaker, and corroborative statements from police
and neighbours, that what looked to the world like a 4am suicide was, in fact, a
 10.45pm murder with a five-hour cover-up operation. According to Wolfe's new
evidence, Bobby was in LA that weekend. He visited Monroe with Lawford on
Saturday afternoon, and a violent argument took place. Bobby left, returning at
10pm with two LAPD security men while Monroe was on the phone to her Mexican
boyfriend; she put the phone down to let them in but never came back. Her
late-night visitors stayed for just 20 minutes. After they left, Jeffries and
Monroe's housekeeper found her comatose and naked on the bed in the guest
cottage, clutching the telephone but still alive. An ambulance was called, but
attempts to resuscitate her failed, and she died at 10.45pm.

Wolfe's account of what happened between Monroe's death and the official call to
the police is the key to the case. Monroe's pink hacienda was a time bomb
waiting to explode and incriminate the Kennedys; it had to be cleared, and a
suicide scene had to be created, before the public heard of her death. In an
operation masterminded by the LAPD intelligence chief, the body was moved to the
bedroom while the house was ransacked and Monroe's "little book of secrets",
which recorded conversations with the Kennedys, was safely removed. It has never
 been found.

Perhaps the last word should go to Monroe herself. "The truth is that I've never
fooled anyone," she once said. "I've

Re: [CTRL] PBS PREZ RESIGNS

1999-09-13 Thread Tatman, Robert

 -Caveat Lector-

My take on this, as a former nonprofit executive, is that almost all of the
PBS stations involved were using third-party brokers who shopped their
mailing lists to interested parties. I don't like having my name and address
sold to someone without my explicit permission; this form of fundraising
bugs the hell out of me, and has for years. But in an era when business and
corporate types dominate the boards of nonprofits (cf. the Pacifica
Foundation flap for an example), the mailing list becomes just a commodity,
part of the station's "goodwill." If anyone is really to blame in this mess,
it's the brokers, who never stopped to think that they might be endangering
the Federal funding of the stations involved, as well as the board members,
who obviously have not been exercising proper oversight over the operations,
especially the fundraising, of the stations.

[CTRL] Morality of War

1999-09-13 Thread Alamaine Ratliff

 -Caveat Lector-

From Justin Raimondo
@ www.antiwar.com/justin/justincol.html

Beginning of article

 September 13, 1999

EAST TIMOR: CALLING ALL INTERNATIONAL BUSYBODIES!

It started in Bosnia, reached a crescendo in Kosovo, and now is completed in the
case of East Timor: the complete transformation of the War Party. Called "hawks"
in the US, during the dark days of the Cold War, and traditionally lampooned in
England as "Colonel Blimps," these characters created a whole antiwar movement
simply as a reaction to their murderous arrogance and repulsive personalities.
Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon, who became an archetype of human evil during the
sixties, Robert McNamara, who used pseudo-scientific jargon to rationalize mass
murder of Vietnamese civilians, and General Curtis E. LeMay, who ran with
arch-segregationist George Wallace for vice president in 1968 and bellowed that
he wanted to "bomb Vietnam back to the Stone Age." These guys were great
villains, the best recruiters for the antiwar movement. Oh, for the good old
days of General LeMay, who at least was honest about what it was he wanted and,
indeed, what he represented: the spirit of the Stone Age incarnated in the
 modern world.

 THE NEW MILITARISTS

Those days, alas, are gone forever. Militarism, like every other institution in
our rotten culture, has gone politically correct. The War Party has modernized,
updated and streamlined itself, and, most importantly, it has learned to speak a
different language: the language of "human rights," multiculturalism, and loony
leftism. The "hawks" and the Colonel Blimps of old are gone, replaced by such
notables as Rep. Barney Frank and Noam Chomsky.

 FROM CALL BOYS TO DOUGHBOYS

Rep. Frank, until recently famous for his taste in call-boys, has now become one
of the leading lights of the War Party. Having succeeded, at least in part, in
his crusade for gays in the military, Frank has recently seemed all too eager to
show how this new gay-friendly army can perform in action, so to speak. "An army
of lovers can never be defeated" or so the ancient Greeks thought, and during
the Kosovo war the leading congressional voice of Greek love could hardly wait
to put this old adage to the test. Now he takes to the House floor and bellows
that "the government of Indonesia should be made to understand the terrible
consequences it will pay if it continues the barbarous oppression of the people
of East Timor." Ah, and what price is that? Frank is fuzzy on the details, but
clear about the moral "right" of the U.S. to intervene, unilaterally if
 necessary:

 THE GREAT MILITARY LEADER SPEAKS

"To those who say we must withhold, let us look at Serbia and Kosovo. The moral
case for an international force intervening in East Timor is as great as the
moral case was in Kosovo, and the legal case is greater. We ignored Serbia's
claim of sovereignty over Kosovo and gave in to the moral imperative to save
people. In Indonesia, the government in power held a referendum. Overwhelmingly,
in the face of great intimidation, the brave people of East Timor voted for
independence. That gives us an even stronger right to send a multinational force
 in there."

Alarming to whom? A while back, we had a lengthy dialogue on CTRL about the
NWO and population control. One idea proposed was that the NWO wants access
to the mineral resources of Africa without having to deal with the local
inhabitants, as well as to prevent further damage to fragile ecosystems
which they consider more important than human societies; according to this
hypothesis, AIDS was deliberately introduced, taking advantage of African
sexual customs, to wipe out the human population while leaving the flora and

like 'em...they keep the opposition on its toes... But it does fit the

all the enemies in the world and all the world's enemy

[Note http://www.emperors-clothes.com encourages everyone to distribute the

 note.]

Diana Johnstone on what NATO and the U.S in particular has wrought and its
consequences, including comments on East Timor.

Jared: I just spoke to Ben Works.I wanted to interview you too. On East Timor.

 Diana: Oh oh oh!

Jared: That's a great beginning. Your opinion is important on this because you
raised the whole question of the new Crusade, the 'Humanitarian Trigger.' (1) .
And the question is, liberals are clamoring for some kind of intervention in
Timor. And I'm suspicious. How do you feel?

Diana: And I am too. That's why I said 'oh oh oh.' What a mess. I think that one
of the problems is precisely the 'humanitarian' intervention in Kosovo that was
supposed to be an example to the world to show that we had this New World Order
where from now on self-determination was going to be enforced by the righteous
missiles of the United States. It's going to have a backlash effect. Countries
around the world are going to smash their minorities preemptively, to keep the
U.S. from coming in. Indonesia is a very spread out, multi-national society with
lots of possibilities of separatist movements.

I want to point out, the case of East Timor is completely different from Kosovo.
East Timor was never a part of Indonesia. It was invaded after the Portuguese
let it go. It was part of this de-colonization mess, the same way the Southern
Sahara is part of it, only then it was Spain; Spain let the colony go in an
irresponsible way that allowed Morocco to grab it. That led to this long, still
unresolved conflict. In Indonesia, Portugal let East Timor go without a proper
transition which allowed Indonesia to grab it but that has never been recognized
internationally. Indonesia has no historic or legal right to be there, whereas
Kosovo is a part of Serbia, which was recognized; it's always been.

But the problem remains. There a lot of countries in the world with minorities
that are very alarmed by this new American policy. Governments are going to
smash their minorities to avoid the sort of situation where everybody will be
clamoring for independence and self-determination with the idea that the United
 States will help them.

That doesn't answer the question what to do now. I don't really know. You've got
these bands in there who are doing what we accused the Serbs of doing, only they
weren't. The Indonesian Military has a long record of that -

Jared: Starting with murdering the Communists and the ethnic Chinese - vast
 numbers -

Diana: I think probably the largest slaughter since WWII. An unbelievably huge
massacre plus people whom they didn't massacre they put in prison forever. So
they totally wiped out the Communists, the left in Indonesia; it's been a
dictatorship ever since, 'our ' kind of dictatorship, etc. Now it's falling
 apart.

And probably the Army, which has been the authority holding it together, is
afraid that the United States, having supported them all this time, now that
they are in economic difficulty, political difficulty, isn't going to support
them anymore and might support a whole lot of separatist movements since that
seems to be the trend. All of Asia, you see, except the country we like to
quote, which is Singapore, because that's our great ally out there - all of Asia
has been quite appalled by the NATO aggression in Kosovo and fears that
something like this is in store for all of them. Because everybody has got
minorities somewhere that can be supported as a pretext for going in, you see.
Now I don't think that's actually the case in Timor. I think it's somewhat
different. However, the danger of announcing these great principles that are in
fact not great principles at all but simply a pretext to go into one place which
is strategically interesting namely the Balkans - that's the only place the
United States wanted to go into right now, I mean later they might want to go
into the Ukraine, Azerbaijan - they're interested in places that have oil
reserves and so on - but this issue has nothing to do with great principles but
of course they call on these great principles when they want to occupy a
particular territory as they wanted to occupy Kosovo and set up NATO bases
there. They don’t want to set up NATO bases right now in East Timor, but they
might later in someplace else around there, Sumatra or someplace else. I think
in fact, with this Kosovo action the United States has initiated a long series
of bloody wars. On the one hand encouraging minorities to think they can get
some kind of self determination and on the other encouraging the states who
don’t want that to massacre the people who might ask for self-determination.

Jared: The Portuguese seem very anxious to intervene directly.

http://www.colinstevenson.free-online.co.uk/ufoets.htm

In 1969 Apollo 11 astronauts brought back what appeared to be an
aborted babyin a rock that was found during their historic expedition.
For 24 years, NASAkept the baby's discovery from the public. The story
finally came to light when South African geologist Dr. Richard Call
showed newsmen the baby's preserved remains. Dr. Call told the
reporters the shriveled fetus had been smuggled to him by a concerned
NASA lab technician.Dr. Call took the fetus to his laboratory in
Durban, South Africa, and has spent the last six years studying it.
'Based onour studies of this baby, we've been able to draw some
stunning conclusions about the moon, about the earth and - most
importantly -about human evolution';

# The fetus is human, female, six inches tall and approximately 200,000
years old.

# Scans of the fetus' brain and her cranium size indicate that it's
intelligence was even higher than that of modern man.

Therefore this is proof that ET's can travel backwards and forewards in
time and space and have visited the Moon at least 200,000 years ago and
havealso proberbly been visiting Earth also for at least this length of
time. Itis also proof of their human cross-breeding and abduction
programme. I wonder what other secrets NASA and the Governments of the
World might be keeping from us?

 'No match for "NITRONEWS.COM". '
 and checking for name availability:
 "nitronews.com is already registered."

 Mighty large couple of coincidences.
Wonder if Jim was working on something new that was too close for some
 ELITE's comfort... ?

 Hi !

I heard Jim Keith died a few days ago. I wanted to post this article I

Secret and Suppressed: Banned Ideas and Hidden History, edited by Jim
Keith,
 1993 Feral House, Box 3466, Portland, OR 97208 , $12.95

In his preface to Secret and Suppressed, Jim Keith states that "the people
who direct and control the world's financial resources are, to a very
large
extent, the same people who control and direct the world's media." Secret
 and
Suppressed is a guidebook to alternative views of contemporary events and
world history... (which) confronts the reader with disquieting
revelations
on mind control, secret societies, media disinformation, cults and elite
cabals. The hard evidence supplied by many of the articles is startling."

About half of the articles in this anthology expose Masonic activity, how
it
has shaped society in the past and its influence in our lives today.

Why Conservatives Are Losing The Culture Wars

  By JAMES BEMIS

"Hope and Memory have one daughter and her name is Art. . . ." — W. B. Yeats.

It's now axiomatic that American culture, including most artists, has hitched
its allegiance to the left. In fact, conservatives have so conclusively accepted
this reality that they do very little thinking about why this is so. Thus,
although winning political and economic battles, they're being completely routed
in the far more important culture war, which is where life in this country -- in
any country -- is actually lived.

Look at high-circulation conservative publications and journals, the
high-water mark of the modern conservative movement. Feature articles are nearly
always about economics or politics. Very practical, down to earth. If any
creative artist is highlighted, it's usually an author -- of books on economics
 or politics.

Not so the films of Hollywood. Stories of heroism against bigoted, reactionary
forces fill screen after screen, along with parables of evil capitalists,
shrewdly exploiting the poor and noble. Conservatives and the religious are
typically portrayed as villains or buffoons; the rebellious and libertine as
modern saints. Simplistic, I know, but don't laugh: It's all part of the
mythology — the religion, if you will — of the left. And it's the key to the
 liberals' artistic dominance.

 The "Vision Thing"

Myths -- defined here not as fictitious events, but the tales, fables, and
images that underlie and define a people's beliefs — are man's most important
cultural element. Myths are symbols — evoking emotions, cultivating attachment,
and delivering anathemas, revealing what a society loves, fears, and hates — as
depicted in traditional art forms like stories, songs, and poetry handed down
from generation to generation. Those who control a people's myths — that is, its
artists — by nature also control their culture.

Why, then, are today's artists so overwhelmingly drawn to the left? It's a
truth George Bush unwittingly stumbled upon, that "vision thing."

The aim of the artist is to provoke a certain response from the viewer,
reader, or listener to his created image. He attempts to present this image in
such a way that audiences will feel the desired emotions and grasp a certain
 interpretation of the creation.

Poetic imagination — the artistic impulse — reflects the stimulus of a vision
 — a philosophy or theology, if you will — about the nature of man. This vision
of man must also necessarily make assumptions about man's relationship to the
universe, and thus about God. "In the beginning, no God . . ." is just as much
a religious statement as "In the beginning, God. . . ."

The artist's imagination, then, responds to an aesthetic, not a scientific,
stimulus, based on a poetic image of man. And this is where conservatives begin
 to lose their way.

Liberals have made a religion —with worship, symbols, rituals, and saints —
out of its modern poetic image, Enlightened Man. This image describes man as
born good, and then corrupted by an authoritarian environment. Free him, educate
him, and he will return to his naturally good state, living in peace and harmony
with his neighbors. He needs no supernatural being to help him to reach
perfection; he may, given enough freedom and facts, attain Heaven right here on
 earth.

Since Enlightened Man is naturally good, so are his instincts. And his
instincts, or appetites, are aroused by voluptuous beauty. These appetites lead
to sensual desires, fulfillment of which is the highest "good" in Enlightened
Man's universe. The only sin is restricting pursuit of this "good."

Enlightened Man's emphasis on physical fulfillment has a profound impact on
the idea of society. Here, each person is isolated in his own private world of
subjectivity, in which every choice is as good or bad as another. The individual
thus becomes an entity outside the reach of the shared values of the community,
leading to a deep sense of personal alienation.

Because this is a false religion, its fruits are ugly and often evil, but its
theology is very distinct. Man is deified, becoming his own god; public schools
become houses of spiritual cleansing and worship; and the sacred beliefs of
progress, equality, tolerance, and democracy the myths of its orthodoxy. Call
this modern paganism if you like; it is, nevertheless, the perfectly logical
 extension of the Enlightenment.

Unfortunately, because of his fallen nature, man — no matter how enlightened —
without God is prone to corruption. This is why modernity's shining dream of
Enlightened Man has degenerated into the wretched, ugly, hag of today's culture.
Ultimately, it's a barren image, incapable of sustaining great artistic
