The term medical marijuana took on dramatic new meaning in February, 2000
when researchers in Madrid announced they had destroyed incurable brain
tumors in rats by injecting them with THC, the active ingredient in
cannabis.

The Madrid study marks only the second time that THC has been administered
to tumor-bearing animals; the first was a Virginia investigation 26 years
ago. In both studies, the THC shrank or destroyed tumors in a majority of
the test subjects.

Most Americans don't know anything about the Madrid discovery. Virtually no
major U.S. newspapers carried the story, which ran only once on the AP and
UPI news wires, on Feb. 29, 2000.

The ominous part is that this isn't the first time scientists have
discovered that THC shrinks tumors. In 1974 researchers at the Medical
College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institute of
Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system, found
instead that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice -- lung
and breast cancer, and a virus-induced leukemia.

The DEA quickly shut down the Virginia study and all further cannabis/tumor
research, according to Jack Herer, who reports on the events in his book,
The Emperor Wears No Clothes. In 1976 President Gerald Ford put an end to
all public cannabis research and granted exclusive research rights to major
pharmaceutical companies, who set out -- unsuccessfully -- to develop
synthetic forms of THC that would deliver all the medical benefits without
the high.

The Madrid researchers reported in the March issue of Nature Medicine
that they injected the brains of 45 rat with cancer cells, producing tumors
whose presence they confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). On
the 12th day they injected 15 of the rats with THC and 15 with Win-55,212-2
a synthetic compound similar to THC. All the rats left untreated uniformly
died 12-18 days after glioma (brain cancer) cell inoculation ...
Cannabinoid (THC)-treated rats survived significantly longer than control
rats. THC administration was ineffective in three rats, which died by days
16-18. Nine of the THC-treated rats surpassed the time of death of
untreated rats, and survived up to 19-35 days. Moreover, the tumor was
completely eradicated in three of the treated rats. The rats treated with
Win-55,212-2 showed similar results.

The Spanish researchers, led by Dr. Manuel Guzman of Complutense
University, also irrigated healthy rats' brains with large doses of THC for
seven days, to test for harmful biochemical or neurological effects. They
found none.

Careful MRI analysis of all those tumor-free rats showed no sign of damage
related to necrosis, edema, infection or trauma ... We also examined other
potential side effects of cannabinoid administration. In both tumor-free
and
tumor-bearing rats, cannabinoid administration induced no substantial
change in behavioral parameters such as motor coordination or physical
activity. Food and water intake as well as body weight gain were unaffected
during and after cannabinoid delivery. Likewise, the general hematological
profiles of cannabinoid-treated rats were normal. Thus, neither biochemical
parameters nor markers of tissue damage changed substantially during the
7-day delivery period or for at least 2 months after cannabinoid treatment
ended.

Guzman's investigation is the only time since the 1974 Virginia study that
THC has been administered to live tumor-bearing animals. (The Spanish
researchers cite a 1998 study in which cannabinoids inhibited breast cancer
cell proliferation, but that was a petri dish experiment that didn't
involve live subjects.)

In an email interview for this story, the Madrid researcher said he had
heard of the Virginia study, but had never been able to locate literature
on it. Hence, the Nature Medicine article characterizes the new study as
the first on tumor-laden animals and doesn't cite the 1974 Virginia
investigation.

I am aware of the existence of that research. In fact I have attempted
many times to obtain the journal article on the original investigation by
these people, but it has proven impossible. Guzman said.

In 1983 the Reagan/Bush Administration tried to persuade American
universities and researchers to destroy all 1966-76 cannabis research work,
including compendiums in libraries, reports Jack Herer, who states, We
know that large amounts of information have since disappeared.

Guzman provided the title of the work -- Antineoplastic activity of
cannabinoids, an article in a 1975 Journal of the National Cancer
Institute -- and this writer obtained a copy at the University of
California medical school library in Davis and faxed it to Madrid.

 SPOKANE, Wash., June 14 - An FBI sniper who shot

 Weaver at Ruby Ridge will not be tried in an
 Idaho courtroom, an Idaho county prosecutor
 said Thursday. Last week, a sharply divided 9th
 U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that FBI

 Were there to be a different prosecutor in Boundary
 County, the charge, or more severe charges such as
 second-degree murder, could be refiled, Yagman is quoted

 TEST OF IMMUNITY
 The Ruby Ridge case was seen as a test of whether
 federal agents are immune from state prosecution. The
 federal government declined to prosecute Horiuchi, but last
 week's 6-5 ruling by the appeals court cleared the way for
 Idaho prosecutors to pursue charges against him.

 The appeals court agreed with Boundary County
 attorney Ramsey Clark, who argued in December that
 immunity cannot be granted until there is an evidentiary
 hearing to determine whether Horiuchi acted unlawfully.
 If a judge ruled that Horiuchi acted unlawfully, then the
 case could go before a jury.

 Horiuchi's attorney, Adam Hoffinger, was out of the
 country and not available for comment Thursday.
 No one answered the telephone at Randy Weaver's
 Iowa home on Thursday.

 NATIONWIDE DEBATE
 The standoff near Bonners Ferry prompted a
 nationwide debate on the use of force by federal agencies.

 Weaver for failing to appear in court on charges of selling
 two illegal sawed-off shotguns.

 The Weaver's cabin had been under surveillance for
 several months when the violence began with the deaths of
 Deputy U.S. Marshal William Degan, Weaver's
 14-year-old son, Samuel, and the Weaver family dog,
 Striker.

 During the standoff,  Horiuchi shot and killed Weaver's wife and
 wounded family friend Kevin Harris. Witnesses said the
 sharpshooter fired as Vicki Weaver held open the cabin

 Horiuchi has said he didn't see Vicki Weaver when he
 fired at Harris, who was armed and was ducking inside the
 cabin. He also said he fired to protect a government
 helicopter overhead.

 APPEALS COURT TROUBLED
 The appeals court appeared troubled with the case.
 Those in dissent said the majority was using hindsight in
 dissecting the mistakes of Horiuchi.

 They called the majority's opinion a grave disservice
 to FBI agents and argued that Horiuchi, who is still an FBI
 agent, should be immune from prosecution.

 The standoff ended after Harris and Weaver
 surrendered. Both men were acquitted of murder,
 conspiracy and other federal charges. Weaver was
 convicted of failing to appear for trial on the firearms
 charge.

 The Justice Department last summer settled the last civil
 suit stemming from the standoff. The government admitted
 no wrongdoing, but paid Harris $380,000 to drop his $10
 million civil damage suit.

 In 1995, the government paid Weaver and his three
 surviving children $3.1 million for the killings of Weaver's
 wife and son.

Mother, Condit's Lawyer Speak Out; Grand Jury Used

W A S H I N G T O N, June 14 - Rep. Gary Condit's lawyer is denying a
report that a missing Washington intern spent the night at the
California congressman's apartment, but 24-year-old Chandra Levy's
mother says it's a possibility Condit knows where her daughter is.

This has become a media frenzy - a tabloid circus, attorney Joseph
Cotchett, said on ABCNEWS' Good Morning America. It's going beyond the
boundaries of fairness and civility.
Anonymous Sources, Cropped Photographs

Cotchett said a report by The Washington Post last week that Condit had
told police investigators that Levy spent the night at his apartment was
absolutely false.

[She] absolutely did not, Cotchett said. If she did, she had to spend
it on a couch because Congressman Condit's wife was in Washington the
entire week [before] she [went] missing.

The Post story did not specify a date when Levy allegedly stayed with
the congressman. Cotchett sent a letter to the newspaper demanding a
retraction, but the Post is standing by its story.

The lawyer has also complained to the New York Daily News about the use
of a photo showing Condit with his arm around Levy. The full picture
shows the congressman with Levy and his intern, Jennifer Baker, who is a
friend of Levy's, but many news organizations have cropped the photo to
show only Condit and Levy.

That's just a false picture, he said. That picture was taken in the
congressman's office with three people - not with two.

Mother: Condit Involvement 'A Possibility'

The Post also reported that one of Levy's relatives told the paper Levy
had discussed her romantic life in Washington, and that she had told the
relative things that seem to contradict statements issued by Condit's
office denying any sort of romantic relationship with the young Bureau
of Prisons intern. Susan Levy, Chandra's mother, said in an interview
with MSNBC today the relative's statements were true.

Levy also urged Condit to come forward with additional information,
suggesting he has not been completely forthcoming in the matter.

I think he could come out and share what he does know, she said. We'd
appreciate his help for having some questions answered.

Asked if she believed the congressman knows where her daughter is, Levy
replied: It's a possibility. Nothing's ruled out.

The last contact anyone had with Chandra was an e-mail she sent to her
mother on the morning of May 1. She was last seen on April 30 at her
health club.

Police found Levy's bags packed, ready for her trip back to California,
her driver's license and cash in her apartment. Only her keys appeared
to be missing.

Police: Grand Jury Used to Obtain Subpoeanas

Levy's disappearance is still classified as a missing persons case, but
Cmdr. Jack Barrett of the Washington Metropolitan Police Department said
on MSNBC today that a grand jury had recently been used to obtain
evidence - an indication the investigation may be intensifying.

Cotchett said today Condit has not hired a criminal defense attorney and
has no need to do so.

There's no need for that, he said on Good Morning America. What we're
talking about here is the boundaries of the press coverage.

Barrett said records obtained by subpoeana have been very helpful to
the investigation.

Condit's chief of staff, Michael Lynch, told ABCNEWS today the
congressman has told the police everything he knew in an initial
interview and subsequent phone conversations. Lynch said to his
knowledge that there have been no subpoenas issued for any of Condit's
records.

There are 20 police detectives assigned to the case and the FBI is
investigating Levy's disappearance. Levy is one of 453 people in
Washington, D.C., who have been reported missing this year.

Rep. Gary Condit's colleagues are pressuring him to go public with
details of his relationship with missing intern Chandra Levy - fearing
the California Democrat's silence about the mystery could wreck his
career.

A handful of California politicos, including big-time lobbyist Vic Fazio
and members of the state's congressional delegation, have urged him to
explain himself in a TV interview or press conference, The Post has
learned.

The feeling up here is he needs to do something to get the pressure
off, one congressional source said yesterday.

He needs to pick a public forum to clear the air and get himself out of
the tabloid maelstrom.

Condit's office did not return calls for comment.

Levy, 24, was last heard from May 1, shortly after she completed a
six-month internship with the Bureau of Prisons in Washington.

  God said to Abraham, Unto thy SEED, I will give thy
  land. Abraham had TWO sons and TWO seeds. Ishmael --

A DANGER TO SOCIETY

Attorney General John Ashcroft is coming under fire lately because of the
strong stance he has taken in favor of the death penalty in the Agent Robert
Hanssen spy case.  The press reported earlier last week that the reason
negotiations between the Justice Department and Hanssen's attorneys broke
down was precisely because Attorney General Ashcroft will not eliminate the
possibility of seeking the death penalty for Hanssen's accused acts of
treason.
How politically incorrect of him!  But somehow I don't think political
correctness governs the thinking of John Ashcroft when it comes to doing his
job, nor should it.
Under Reno we got used to the office being used for intimidating political
enemies and advancing the cause of political correctness that many Americans
have forgotten what it's supposed to be - namely, the #1 law enforcement
office in the country and under the law, the death penalty is considered a
suitable punishment for the crime of treason.
The press of course is making Ashcroft out to be some hypocritical ogre.
Here is a man who prays every day and seeks guidance from the Lord, is
pro-life when it comes to abortion but then turns around and favors the
death penalty.
The Left has, for decades, attempted to paint a picture that people who are
religious, pro-life, and pro-death penalty are hypocrites and quite frankly,
it's a tiresome argument but since a whole new generation is now of voting
age and engaged in current events, it's necessary to repeat the argument and
show that this is not hypocritical or inconsistent.
Charles Rice, Professor of Law at Notre Dame, whose concentration is
jurisprudence, is a well-established and respected authority on these
questions.  He has written extensively over the years on abortion and the
death penalty.  In an article published in the New York Times quite some
time ago, Professor Rice argued that the death penalty is not in conflict
with Christianity nor with the pro-life viewpoint.
He explains that The state's moral authority to impose the death penalty,
as with the moral authority to kill in a just war, ultimately rests on the
fact that the state derives its authority from God who is the Lord of Life.
If the common good (or life) of a society is being threatened by a murderer,
such as Jeffrey Dahmer or Timothy McVeigh, the state has the moral authority
to protect and nurture the innocent lives within that community or society
by eliminating the threat to that life.  In other words, administering the
death penalty to the life-taker, i.e., murderer, in order to preserve the
lives of innocent citizens.
This is consistent with Scripture which states quite clearly And he that
killeth any man shall surely be put to death. (Leviticus 24:17-22) and
Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth
of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause
him to die. Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a
murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.
(Numbers 35:30-31)
This reasoning explains fully why it is perfectly logical and consistent to
take a pro-life position on abortion while maintaining a pro-death penalty
position for criminals.  If

DISESTABLISH THE CULT OF LIBERALISM

This week the Supreme Court upheld the right of religious
groups to participate in the beautiful mosaic of after-school
activities. No new territory was broken: The case was almost
identical to another case in which the Supreme Court reversed
the exact same court years ago. This was massive resistance.



Justice Clarence Thomas remarked on the oddity of having to
reverse the same court twice, noting that while the appellate
courts aren't required to cite all the Supreme Court's
precedents, they might want to cite the last time they were
reversed on the same facts.



At least the 6-3 decision gives us an accurate count of the
atheists on the court, probably as accurate as my dream of
giving them all polygraph tests someday. (Do you believe in a
Higher Being ... no, seriously.) Concerned someone might be
reading Leviticus during school hours, Justice David Souter
dissented in a hair-splitting exegesis about the precise time
classes let out (2:56 p.m.), vs. the time the organizers would
enter school property (2:30 p.m.).



The New York Times' obligatory hysterical denunciation of the
decision revealingly complained: (C)hildren that young are
unlikely to discern that the religious message of authority
figures who come to the school each day to teach does not
carry the school's endorsement.



It is simply taken for granted that it's desirable for
children to revere authority figures at government schools.
Normally those authority figures are teaching the youngsters
to put condoms on zucchini or training them in the catechism
of recycling. Sending a mixed message about government
authority figures might interfere with the state's ability
to turn small children into Good Germans inculcated in the
liberal religion.



It's well past time for liberalism to be declared a religion
and banned from public schools. Allowing Christians to be one
of many after-school groups induces hysteria not just because
liberals hate religion. It's because the public school is
their temple. Children must be taught to love Big Brother,
welcoming him to take over our schools, our bank accounts, our
property, even our toilet bowls.



We're told the First Amendment requires a separation of church
and state, which, just as an incidental matter, is completely
false. The whole point of the Constitution is to separate the
federal government from the individual.



In keeping with the general theme, the First Amendment
provides that Congress cannot establish a religion -- but nor
can it stop the states from establishing religions. That's why
it says: Congress shall make no law respecting an
establishment of religion. Dear Congress: You may be eligible
for a free country. You do nothing.



The only thing that tempers my annoyance with the canard about
states not being allowed to establish religions is imagining
the kind of established religion we'd have in New York. We'd
be doing daily devotionals to Saint Hillary.



Still, it is a fact that when the First Amendment was
ratified, several states had established religions.
Fortunately for the burgeoning minority religions in those
states, the established religions were things like
Episcopalianism and Congregationalism rather than
Liberalism.



It's hard to imagine now, but before the official government
religion was liberalism -- devoted to class warfare, ethnic
hatred and intolerance -- Americans were kind to one another.
They managed to get along even without ACLU lawsuits. Thus,
when there were enough practitioners of other faiths in a
state to be bothered by the established religion, the majority
just disestablished themselves.



Back to the New Country: Two malcontents at the Virginia
Military Institute recently sued to ban VMI's tradition of
saying a non-denominational prayer at mealtime. The cadets are
not required to recite the prayer or even bow their heads.
Merely having to stand while listening to an invocation of God
is apparently very upsetting for them. (I'd hate to see these
guys under fire.)



A typical rendition of the VMI dinner prayer goes like this:
Almighty God, we give our thanks for VMI, for its reputation,
spirit and ideals. Let your favor continue toward our school
and your grace be abundantly supplied to the Corps. Now, O
God, we receive this food and share this meal together with
thanksgiving.



It doesn't get any more sectarian than that. How about:
Designer of the Universe (if you're out there) ...



Religious people keep cheerfully going back and trying to
formulate some prayer that won't make liberals angry. But the
problem won't go away. No prayer that assumes a belief in a
Higher Being will ever be acceptable. God has no part in the
religion of sex education, environmentalism, feminism, Marxism
and loving Big Brother.



In a totally unsurprising development, liberals finally
suspended their opposition to the death penalty in the case of
Timothy McVeigh. He was the

I assume that really taking this into court would just
embarrass too many rich families, that's why charges
were dropped.  Luckily, that happens to set a great
precedent from our perspective, which is probably
the last thing on the minds of those Westchester
families: of the girls *and* the boys.

The funny thing is Jeanine Pirro. She's our DA, but
her husband was convicted this year for financial
impropriety. Pretty ironic. It'll be interesting

traveler, his aides have disclosed that the president made a business trip
to Guatemala sometime in the past. The aides offered no details, listing
Guatemala simply as one of the handful of countries Bush had visited prior

No one who actually thinks for him/herself could ever take Ann Coulter
seriously. She wrote one of many one-sided books trashing the Clintons and
they are all the same. There are a few defending the Clintons which are just
as bad on the other side. The only book I have read that even attempts to
give a balanced view is Jeffrey Toobin's A Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy.

Coulter doesn't seem to realize she is nothing but a trophy conservative
taken off the shelf to dazzle strangers when it is convenient. Those backing
her biased blathering probably snicker that she's a dumb blonde behind her
back.

If we are known by our enemies, surely I must protest for I
deserve better than our little self-avowed Marxist here.
Name-calling and slinging obscenities at me are the acts of
the sniveling coward that these people are who are parasites
on a system they profess to despise and abhor.  They point
fingers and ridicule the very system and people that allow
them their weirdness.

Now Steve calls me the Church Lady (whom I think is a riot)
but he cannot know my religion, if in fact I have one, nor to
what denomination I belong and if I do in fact attend a church
or participate in organized religion.  Statists cannot
comprehend individuals, only groups, and the stereotyping is
typical for each person must belong to groups and believe as
those groups believe.  It is in the context of said group that
they are recognized by their god, the State or Big Brother.
Brother NEVER sees individuals, only these groups and so each
one must chose their groups and subscribe blindly and totally
to whatever that group represents in order for Big Brother to
recognize them.  Therefore, I must be thus-and-so as some such
group, whether I am or not.  It does require a certain mindset
to arrive at these stereotypical concept of others.

As for the lurking and spying on militia, I will try to stop
laughing long enough to type for surely they are not so
absolutely goofy as to think they can get the inside scoop on
a militia off of an Internet email list open to the public!
Those guys were running PsychOps before these twits were out
of diapers but then I doubt some of them are yet, based on
their cry-baby behavior. They will never lay eyes on a true
militia email list for that would be the sort of thing
established by personal contact and not strangers lurking on
the 'Net. They would never pass the 'smell test.' Let the
little boys play James Bond for that is the extent of their
miserable lives, lurking in the shadows of people with real
lives.

But this certainly does explain the rabid behavior of certain
individuals.  Now he is concerned with my sexuality and that I
might desire to be a man or might be one for what difference
does that make?  Why does my gender matter to the issue at
hand? This is an extremely sexist attack and Karl would NOT
approve.  Such gender oppression!!  Tsk, tsk!! Any ad hominem
attack will do in the total absence of logic and in total
intolerance of others who do not buy this bill of goods.  I am
thankful that when I went through adolescence I had the good
sense and decency to respect the rights of others and was not
so insecure that I had to constantly attack any and everybody
who did not think as I did.  This need to attack and silence
others IS the New World Order for it is already alive and well
among us, going about the job of of attempting to

Kris,

I take it your question is addressed to me as this is my post
although another posted the same article under a different
header.

Ann Coulter is known for her rather sarcastic wit but there is
an element of truth in her contention that it is ridiculous to
be so concerned with religion in after-school activities when
all day long, children attending govt schools are being
indoctrinated in the liberal point of view and having their
values rearranged in other ways. I know this to be true for I
have seen it happen with my own children.  So in that context,
I do believe this.

Perhaps you do not appreciate Ms. Coulter's style of writing
for it is designed to make people think and I do think some
people have not considered the fact that much that is taught
in schools that is social engineering at its worst.  I am not
the only one who thinks this for that is why we have such a
rise in home schooling now.  She does not literally mean
liberalism is a religion but that it is taught in public
schools (yes, I KNOW this to be true) yet they are the ones
who object to any OTHER ideologies being presented.

Do you believe there are no ideologies presented in the
classrooms and that education if strictly academic and free
from political and social orientation?  That is all she is
saying.

Are we no longer about different aspects of the political
dialectic?

ERIC REEVES, SUDAN, DISPLACEMENT AND DOUBLE STANDARDS


Eric Reeves, an English teacher at Smith College in Massachusetts, has
since 1999 set himself up as a long-distance commentator on events
within the Sudanese oil fields, stating that he was opposed to the
Sudanese oil project and those foreign oil companies involved within it.
Dr Reeves' credibility as a commentator and researcher has already been
extensively questioned in The Return of the 'Ugly American': Eric
Reeves and Sudan.(1)

Supposedly at the heart of his concern has been the alleged displacement
of civilians from areas in or around the Sudanese oil fields. Amongst
other things Dr Reeves has claimed that the Sudanese government has
displaced populations around the oil fields, orchestrating a ferocious
scorched-earth policy in the area of the oil fields and pipelines.  (2)
He stated, for example, in July 1999, that [h]uge swaths of land around
the oil fields and pipelines are presently cleared of all human life and
sustenance. (3)  While these claims have been discredited and
contradicted by detailed satellite analysis of the areas in question,
which showed migration to and not movement from the oil fields, and by
comments made by groups such as the World Food Programme (4), the extent
of Reeves' double standards with regard to allegations of civilian
displacement within Sudan is now also all too clear

Despite his stated concern about displaced civilians, Reeves has ignored
the 60,000 civilians displaced by the Sudan People's Liberation Army
(SPLA) rebel offensive in Bahr al-Ghazal in May-June 2001. This
offensive has resulted in the massive displacement of southern Sudanese
civilians. On 8 June, the International Committee of the Red Cross
stated that the offensive had led to the displacement of at least 20,000
civilians. The Sudanese Catholic Information Office reported that most
activities within the region had been halted by the offensive:
locations from Tonj northwards remain no go areas forcing both church
and humanitarian agencies to suspend their flights to the region. (5)
By 11 June, the United Nations estimated that 30,000 civilians had been
displaced within Bahr al-Ghazal. (6) Two days later, the Roman Catholic
Bishop of Rumbek, Bishop Mazzolari, reported that just under 60,000
civilians had been displaced by the offensive, and that these civilians
were in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.(7)  This offensive
followed the announcement that the United States was to provide the
Sudanese rebels with thirteen million dollars worth of logistical
assistance.(8)

What is also evident is that this is not the first time that Dr Reeves
has studiously ignored irrefutable evidence of the forced displacement
of civilians by the SPLA rebel movement. In March 2001, the Catholic
Comboni missionaries stated that SPLA forces displaced 15,000 civilians
when they attacked and destroyed the town of Nyal in westerner Upper
Nile in late February. (9)  In August 2000 Reuters also reported that:

An influx of displaced people into Bentiu, the capital of Unity state
in war-torn southern Sudan, has greatly strained humanitarian and food
aid in the town...World Food Programme (WFP) official Makena Walker told
Reuters about 20,000 people displaced by recent fighting had reached
Bentiu in the last three weeks.

That is to say the refugees were fleeing into Government-controlled
areas. Reuters also stated that Sulaf al-Din Salih, a government
humanitarian aid commissioner, had said that displaced people were
arriving in Bentiu at a rate of 150 to 200 per day, with the total
number now running at 40,000. (10)  In July 2000, as yet another example
of civilian displacement, Bishop Mazzolari of Rumbek stated that
thousands of civilians were fleeing the southern town of Wau. Bishop
Mazzolari said that this massive human exodus was triggered by fears of
a possible rebel attack. (11)

All these deliberate displacements of civilians were ignored by Dr
Reeves, committed as he seemingly is to presenting one-sided and
distorted images of events within Sudan. Dr Reeves has also claimed that
Sudanese oil revenues were fuelling the civil war. While this claim has
not been supported by any credible evidence, in June 2001 the United
States publicly announced that it had given 13 million dollars to the
Sudanese rebels. On this too Reeves is silent.

What price credibility?

Muslim rulers as well as the entire Ummah to lend all possible support to
the Palestinian brethren against the Israelis and for the defence of the
Masjid Al-Aqsa. The Jamaat Shoora, in a resolution, adopted here on
Thursday strongly condemned the blatant use of brute force by Israel to
crush the Palestinians and slated the silence of the so-called civilised
world on the genocide of the Palestinians.

It urged every conscientious human being to raise a voice against this
crime.

Citing recent instances of brutal killings of minor children by Israelis
the JI central body noted that even some Israeli citizens had condemned
such events.

It pointed out that according to a survey carried out by a Zionist
institute, 50 percent of Jews did not even want to live in Palestine and
that 65 percent of Jewish tourist projects had been wound up during the
last nine months.

About 2,500 Israeli soldiers had proceeded on long leave or had
disappeared to avoid fighting the Palestinians while 600 others had
declined to join the operation against intifada, it added.

The JI Shoora appealed to the Palestinian organisations to join forces
under a common banner to lead their people to freedom.

It also called upon Washington to abandon its patronage of Israel in view

Well, Dale, how is that different than liberal commentators?
She is supposed to be biased as she is a conservative
commentator, not a news reporter or journalist.  She does not
present herself as being neutral.

So you do not believe there are politics of the liberal
persuasion being taught in schools?  Been there lately?

But what really concerns me is that although two different
posters posted this same article, Coulter is far from the
extreme right as in Falwell and The Christian Coalition.  What
would happen if a post from that element appeared?  Are
conservative points of view not to be presented, even as this
was done, without comment or endorsement?  Did I misread the
Mission Statement of this list?  I thought different sides of
the political dialectic were SUPPOSED to be presented  for the
purpose of acting it out.

Now it seems to me that this is not true judging from the
reaction to this article, which should have been innocuous in
and of itself.  As I said, I have never seen Coulter deemed
extreme.  So is one side presenting here for only the
convenience of the opposite (liberal) side to bash and
validate themselves?  That would not be very nice, would it?

We have posts from the extreme side of the left in the form of
gays, eco-extremists, wiccans, pagans, anarchists but not from
Falwell nor Christian Coalition, etc. yet even moderate
conservative views draw fire.  What is wrong with this
picture, in light of the mission statement?

seriously. She wrote one of many one-sided books trashing the

Conspiracy.

Coulter doesn't seem to realize she is nothing but a trophy

That's correct, they are all the same and equally irritating.

I have no disagreement with Ms. Coulter on that. But it doesn't matter to me
what they are teaching; the problem is they teach people what to think
instead of how to think and as a result people are unable to see there are
two sides to everything.

Some of us dislike the conservative AND liberal view but to either side that
is heresy. Politics is a hissy-fight over who gets to spend other peoples'
money, and how much to skim off the top. A necessary evil that is very
necessary so we must tolerate the imperfections.

You are correct; I have a problem with Ms. Coulter and that is a matter of
personal taste. She rubs me the wrong way.

Those are all labels that define people much too narrowly for my

How does a treatment become conventional medical treatment?  It
frequently starts with research on mice or rats.  When this treatment
showed promise on mice, the good ole US of A government pulled the
plug on the research.  The only half baked idea I see is that scientists
should have to accept government dictates on what they study.

 munchies and become fat and unhealthy.

Gays, eco-extremists, wiccans, pagans, anarchists are not the extreme
side of the left. Many among them aren't leftists at all, not by any
stretch of the imagination.

Some gays, some wiccans, and some pagans are leftists. Some gays and
some pagans are rightists. Most wiccans are apolitical. No wiccans are
rightists. Anarchists are neither leftists nor rightists. Eco-extremism
was founded by Nazis. Some contemporary eco-extremists are leftists,
some are rightists and some are anarchists. Making it even more
complicated is that the very definition of extreme is a relative one.
The same position can be easily seen as extreme by one faction and as
moderate by another faction.  


Get your facts straight. Better still, abandon the paradigm. Left/right
is a false dichotomy. The spectrum is insufficient in scope to serve as
a valid metaphor for the political landscape.

The parents of missing intern Chandra Levy said Thursday that they suspect
Rep. Gary Condit knows more than he has said about her disappearance, and
they urged him to come forward with the information.

In an interview with MSNBC, Susan and Robert Levy said that more information
will be coming out about the relationship of their daughter to the Ceres
Democrat. They also said that they think it's possible Condit knows where
their daughter is.

Later, however, Susan Levy said she may have come off as accusatory when she
didn't mean to.

"I haven't accused the congressman of anything," she said. "Everybody is
thinking I'm making accusations, but I haven't."

Mike Lynch, the congressman's press aide, said there is nothing more Condit
could say because he's told police all he knows. He also said that the Levys'
comments are the understandable feelings of distraught parents.

"He's told the police everything about this," Lynch said of Condit. "Our
hearts and prayers go out to the Levys. They are going through an experience
you can't even imagine. It is the worst conceivable circumstance that could
happen to anybody."

Late Thursday afternoon, the Metropolitan Washington Police Department
repeated what has become a daily litany: They had no new information on
Chandra's disappearance to report.

The case was being treated as a missing person's case, said Officer Tony
O'Leary. "There is no evidence it should be a criminal case," he said.

Chandra Levy, 24, who had been working as an intern at the Federal Bureau of
Prisons, was last seen April 30 at a Washington sports club. The following
day, she sent an e-mail to her parents in Modesto telling them about her
plans to return to California where she was about to be awarded a graduate
degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She has not
been heard from since.

Condit, a 53-year-old seven-term congressman, has been drawn into the case
because Chandra Levy had struck up a relationship with him after visiting his
office. The nature of that relationship hasn't been firmly established,
although Condit has repeatedly insisted it was not romantic.

In the interview with MSNBC, however, Sandra Levy said she had had a
conversation with her daughter about Condit, but she declined to give any
details other than to say "more information will be coming."

The Washington Post has reported that Chandra Levy had been to Condit's
apartment in Washington's Adams Morgan neighborhood, and stayed overnight.
Condit has strenuously denied that, and demanded a retraction from the
newspaper, which it has refused to do.

About the time of her disappearance, Condit's wife, Carolyn, was staying with
the congressman in the unit, Lynch said Thursday. As far as he knows, the two
women never met, Lynch said.

Lynch said Mrs. Condit arrived in Washington April 28 in order to attend a
Congressional Wives Club luncheon with First Lady Laura Bush, and she flew
back to California on May 3.

Condit's lawyer this week has lashed out at what he describes as a "media
circus" in the coverage of his linkage to Levy's disappearance.

Elliott Abrams: It's Back!

"How would you feel if your wife and children were brutally raped before
being hacked to death by soldiers during a military massacre of 800
civilians, and then two governments tried to cover up the killings?" It's a
question that won't be asked of Elliott Abrams at a Senate confirmation
hearing--because George W. Bush, according to press reports, may appoint
Abrams to a National Security Council staff position that (conveniently!)
does not require Senate approval. Moreover, this query is one of a host of
rude, but warranted, questions that could be lobbed at Abrams, the Iran/contra
 player who was an assistant secretary of state during the Reagan years and a
shaper of that Administration's controversial--and deadly--policies on Latin
America and human rights. His designated spot in the new regime: NSC's senior
director for democracy, human rights and international operations. (At press
time, the White House and Abrams were neither confirming nor denying his
return to government.)

Bush the Second has tapped a number of Reagan/Bush alums who were involved in
Iran/contra business for plum jobs: Colin Powell, Richard Armitage, Otto
Reich and John Negroponte. But Abrams's appointment--should it come to
pass--would mark the most generous of rehabilitations. Not only did Abrams
plead guilty to two misdemeanor counts of lying to Congress about the Reagan
Administration's contra program, he was also one of the fiercest ideological
pugilists of the 1980s, a bad-boy diplomat wildly out of sync with Bush's
gonna-change-the-tone rhetoric. Abrams, a Democrat turned Republican who
married into the cranky Podhoretz neocon clan, billed himself as a
"gladiator" for the Reagan Doctrine in Central America--which entailed
assisting thuggish regimes and militaries in order to thwart leftist
movements and dismissing the human rights violations of Washington's cold war
partners.

One Abrams specialty was massacre denial. During a Nightline appearance in
1985, he was asked about reports that the US-funded Salvadoran military had
slaughtered civilians at two sites the previous summer. Abrams maintained
that no such events had occurred. And had the US Embassy and the State
Department conducted an investigation? "My memory," he said, "is that we did,
but I don't want to swear to it, because I'd have to go back and look at the
cables." But there had been no State Department inquiry; Abrams, in his
lawyerly fashion, was being disingenuous. Three years earlier, when two
American journalists reported that an elite, US-trained military unit had
massacred hundreds of villagers in El Mozote, Abrams told Congress that the
story was commie propaganda, as he fought for more US aid to El Salvador's
military. The massacre, as has since been confirmed, was real. And in 1993
after a UN truth commission, which examined 22,000 atrocities that occurred
during the twelve-year civil war in El Salvador, attributed 85 percent of the
abuses to the Reagan-assisted right-wing military and its death-squad allies,
Abrams declared, "The Administration's record on El Salvador is one of
fabulous achievement." Tell that to the survivors of El Mozote.

But it wasn't his lies about mass murder that got Abrams into trouble. After
a contra resupply plane was shot down in 1986, Abrams, one of the
coordinators of Reagan's pro-contra policy (along with the NSC's Oliver North
and the CIA's Alan Fiers), appeared several times before Congressional
committees and withheld information on the Administration's connection to the
secret and private contra-support network. He also hid from Congress the fact
that he had flown to London (using the name "Mr. Kenilworth") to solicit a
$10 million contribution for the contras from the Sultan of Brunei. At a
subsequent closed-door hearing, Democratic Senator Thomas Eagleton blasted
Abrams for having misled legislators, noting that Abrams's misrepresentations
could lead to "slammer time." Abrams disagreed, saying, "You've heard my
testimony." Eagleton cut in: "I've heard it, and I want to puke." On another
occasion, Republican Senator Dave Durenberger complained, "I wouldn't trust
Elliott any further than I could throw Ollie North." Even after Abrams copped
a plea with Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh, he refused to concede that
he'd done anything untoward. Abrams's Foggy Bottom services were not retained
by the First Bush, but he did include Abrams in his lame-duck pardons of
several Iran/contra wrongdoers.

Abrams was as nasty a policy warrior as Washington had seen in decades. He
called foes "vipers." He said that lawmakers who blocked contra aid would
have "blood on their hands"--while he defended US support for a
human-rights-abusing government in Guatemala. When Oliver North was
campaigning for the Senate in 1994 and was accused of having ignored contra
ties to drug dealers, Abrams backed North and

Treaty of Nice is dead, long live Connolly's vision

The Irish people have spoken. The Treaty of Nice is
dead. If the Irish political elite attempt to subvert
the will of the Irish people expressed through a
secret ballot, there will be a successful legal challenge
to prevent them from doing so.

The rest of the political elite in the European Union
also have no right to subvert the sovereign will of
the Irish people. Unless all the member-states, all of
which are legal equals, accept the treaty it
automatically falls.

Their contempt for the Irish people clearly showed in
their reaction to our vote against the treaty.

It showed on the face of the Swedish Minister for
Foreign Affairs, who seemed to express a virtually
racist sense of superiority in her rejection of our
decision. Every Irish person knows that she and the
rest of the elite did not place the treaty for
ratification * before their own people.* ( accents added - Nurev )

The Peace And Neutrality Alliance (PANA) has friends
and contacts in Sweden who assure us that, had there
been a referendum on the Nice Treaty in that country,
it would have been defeated. PANA would not have been
surprised that, if there had been referendums in all
the other states, many would have voted No.

In fact the entire project of the EU elite is to
transform the EU from a Common Market which Ireland
joined in the 1970s, without virtually any reference
to the various peoples of the EU, into a super-state,
a world power as the President of the European
Commission, Romano Prodi, put it. They show, by
refusing to have referendums in their own states, that
their contempt is not restricted to the Irish people
but extends to their own.

It is certain that a cheer of support for the Irish
people was heard among the ordinary people in all the
member-states. Even the people of the applicant states
must welcome our decision.

If the European elite can treat the people of Ireland,
a small democratic state, with such arrogance,
applicant state populations can rest assured that they
will suffer the same imperial attitude when they join
the EU.

And join they should. The Peace And Neutrality
Alliance wrote to the ambassadors of all the applicant
states at the start of the Nice Treaty referendum
campaign informing them that, providing the process of
entry was done in a democratic manner, PANA had not
only no problem with those countries joining, but
would positively welcome them.

So, what kind of phoenix can rise from the ashes of
the Treaty of Nice? As far as PANA is concerned, the
new EU should be one without any military dimension.
The new treaty to replace the dead one would have to
contain - as an absolute minimum - a protocol, similar
to that which the Danes already have, which would
exclude Ireland from paying for, or involvement with,
the European Rapid Reaction Force.

If the new treaty included such a protocol then, as
chairman of PANA, I will recommend to the executive
that we would not campaign against the new treaty.
PANA campaigned against Nice purely on opposition to
Irish involvement with the militarisation of the EU
through the RRF, so there is a reasonable possibility
the recommendation would be accepted.

However, there is a large number of groups affiliated
to PANA which have a wider agenda, including the
National Platform, the Green Party and Sinn Féin.
These and other groups would clearly seek further
changes.

It is clear that many people who voted No did not
agree with Ireland losing its commissioner. They voted
No because they did not agree with enhanced
co-operation. They did not agree with the gradual
abolition of our veto. Thus the Government has to take
into consideration objections to the treaty other than
those raised by PANA.

The vote was not a flash in the pan. The number of
people voting against the efforts to transform a
Common Market into a European super-state, a European
empire, has been increasing steadily in successive
referendums.

We need to defend our independence. Our national
independence was fought for by generations of
political leaders who did not take brown paper
envelopes. We owe it to them to continue to defend our
democracy.

GOTHENBURG, Sweden (Reuters) - Anarchist riots raged around a European
Union summit on Friday, overwhelming Swedish police and forcing EU leaders
to abandon their hotels and drop a planned gala dinner.
At least two people were shot and wounded and more than 50 people were
treated for injuries, hospital spokesman said.
Police said an officer had opened fire in self-defense, injuring one
demonstrator. Casualty reports were confused.
As fighting continued late into the night, police broadcast appeals to
local residents in Sweden's second city to stay home.
At a late-night news conference, Justice Minister Thomas Bodstrom denied
police had lost control but said the violence by hundreds of anarchists was
the most difficult challenge Sweden's security forces had ever faced.
Many of the rioters came from other countries with the intention of
disrupting the summit, he said.
Barricaded in a heavily guarded conference center, the 15 EU leaders
condemned the anti-capitalist riots, which have dogged international
gatherings since the 1999 World Trade Organization conference in Seattle.
They agreed that the process of enlarging the EU into eastern Europe must
go ahead despite Ireland's shock rejection of the Nice Treaty on EU reform
last week.
Police said they made several hundred arrests, including 110 suspected
militants who docked on a ferry from Denmark and were immediately detained.
Plumes of smoke rose over the fashionable Kungsports Avenyn as masked
anarchists methodically vandalized shop windows, piled tables and chairs
from sidewalk cafes into makeshift barricades and set them ablaze. Some
stores were looted.
Protesters hurled paving-stones and firecrackers at police, who responded
with baton charges. Mounted police were dragged from their horses and at
least nine policemen were injured.
FIGHTING ESCALATED
The fighting was far worse than clashes on Thursday in which 455 people
were detained while President Bush was meeting the EU leaders. Bush flew to
Poland on Friday morning.
The violence forced the Swedish hosts to switch Friday's summit dinner on
security grounds from Gothenburg's botanical gardens to the fortress-like
congress center, ringed by a six-foot high double steel fence and freight
containers.
Five summit delegations were forced to move out of a central hotel because
police said they could not guarantee their safety.
The mayhem overshadowed the day's EU business, which centered on the bloc's
ambitious plans to admit up to 12 ex-communist and Mediterranean countries
over the next few years.
There is a consensus...to send a signal to the applicant countries that we
want to go ahead with the enlargement process, Swedish Prime Minister
Goran Persson said after chairing the first day of the summit.
Despite the Irish vote, there will be a signal that the enlargement
process is irreversible, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder told reporters.
Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern told the leaders his country needed an
extended period of reflection after last week's stunning 54-46 percent
defeat of the treaty negotiated in December to reform EU institutions to
cope with new members.
He stressed that Ireland's no should not be seen as a vote against
enlargement. Diplomats said they expected the Irish to vote again, probably
next year after a cooling-off period, and some EU statement respecting
Ireland's neutrality in the common European foreign and security policy.
TIMETABLE FOR ENLARGEMENT?
Diplomats said most of the 15 EU states wanted to set a more precise
timetable for admitting the first eastern candidates but Germany and France
were holding out against fixing dates.
Persson said he hoped the leaders would agree on a formula that would
satisfy leaders of 12 candidate countries when they meet for lunch on
Saturday.
Reflecting the majority view, Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok said: We should
declare our will to close the negotiations with the most advanced
candidates in 2002 and thereby encourage them to hasten reforms.
But diplomats quoted Schroeder as saying that fixing dates would send the
wrong signal.
A senior EU diplomat said the Germans argued that setting an early target
date could make it harder for Poland to qualify in the first group, a key
German goal, and leave insufficient time to reform agricultural policy.
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said the leaders agreed that those
applicants who had not completed ratification by 2004 could still take part
in European Parliament elections that year. Their MEPs would take their
seats upon accession.
In a rare mood of contrition, some leaders said they regretted that the
bloc's Ecofin council had censured Ireland's budget as inflationary earlier
this year. Others argued it had been premature to launch a fresh debate on
the future of Europe before the treaty

recalled a plausible false memory of getting lost in a shopping mall, none of
the participants accepted an implausible false memory that they had received
a painful enema as a child from their parent.

Were Students Informed of Ethical Guidelines Specific to Their Assignment?

There is no evidence to indicate that Loftus’ students were informed that
deceiving study participants might be problematic. As Coan (1997) reported:
I hadn’t realized that deceiving participants as a part of psychological
research was anything other than business as usual ... I hadn’t considered
most of their concerns at all, let alone how to address them (p. 275).

There is no evidence to indicate that Loftus’ students were informed of
ethical guidelines regarding the use of children as research participants.
For example, the University of Washington’s HSC requires that prior assent
must be obtained from all child participants, and a Committee-approved form
is provided for this purpose (University of Washington HSC staff, personal
communication, June 2, 1997). Because the experiments on Brittany and Chris
were conducted by Loftus’ students without a Committee-approved form, they
appear to have been conducted in violation of University of Washington HSC
requirements.

The results of the mall study have been pervasively misrepresented in the
media, in scholarly journals, and in courtroom testimony to suggest that
therapists can implant false memories of sexual abuse in their clients.
Although researchers are not responsible for media inaccuracies regarding
their research, they are ethically required to attempt to correct
inaccuracies to the extent that this is possible. We are not aware of any
efforts by Loftus to correct these inaccuracies, and we welcome any published
evidence to the contrary.

The ad hominem argument is a logical fallacy in which one attempts to
discredit information, opinions, or questions by discrediting the person who
is raising the issue (e.g., Halpern, 1996). Loftus (this issue) describes our
article (Crook  Dean, this issue) as a partisan essay by women like
Crook who complain, deliberate[ly] attempt to distort [her] work, and
who attack her to personally and publicly create trouble for [her]. She
proceeds further to cast doubt on the process that led to the acceptance of
[this] manuscript. The ad hominem tone of Loftus’ reply follows her
established strategy of response to most writers who disagree with her.

Loftus has used the derogatory concept of True Believer (Loftus  Ketcham,
1994, p. 31) to characterize those who disagree with her as irrational
fanatics and has characterized therapists who use approaches of which she
disapproves as executioners (Loftus, Milo,  Paddock, 1995).

She has compared herself to someone who risked his life to save Jews from the
Nazis: ’I feel like Oskar Schindler,’ Loftus muses, referring to the German
financier who rescued doomed Jews from the Nazis (Kahn, 1994, p. 80). I
keep thinking of Oskar Schindler circling the lake with thousands of people,’
she says without a trace of irony ... (Niemark, 1996, p. 50).1 We suggest
that, in comparing herself to Schindler, Loftus leaves little doubt as to how
she characterizes those who disagree with her. It is clear that those who
question Loftus’ work risk being confronted with attacks on their integrity
and credibility.

Although we acknowledge that inaccurate and mistaken memories may occur, we
must conclude that Loftus and Pickrell's mall study does not support in any
manner the notion that false autobiographical memories of abuse in childhood
can be implanted by therapists

 work (a conditioned reflex ) to pay the bills of the world and their
 Masters ( United Nations, US Government ) and live happily and prosper
 on the 18 to 23 percent left after paying all the required taxes and
 excise taxes on all utilities, land taxes, Rents, licenses, permits,
 water, sewage, Personal income, and capital gains. Private school if
 you wish to have children that can read, unless they can play sports
 you might save some money there or you could home school your children,
 not accepted widely, It works the children learn, they are to smart and
 not likely to be controlled. For the last 5 years the upper 13 percent
 of the Finalists in the National spelling bee have been home schooled.
 Sez a lot for your school system don't it. But you can do as you wish
 with your 18 to 23 percent you can save it after you provide food and
 shelter for your family and pay that mandatory Car insurance payment.
 You can be sure that a thankless world makes good use of your money,
 far better than you could. Right!

 OK now some of you might be awake, bet it is the ones who drink bottled
 water (fluoride in water kills your ability to think) they did not tell
 you that when they dumped it in your water supply, the Russians in the
 Gulag did not know the water was drugged ether. Fluoride is a main
 ingredient in the Mind Control drug Prosaic, remember that with the next
 sip you take.

 Guess what you still have cavities if you still have teeth, that was

 Sometimes even an American can catch the system in a act of blatant

 felt threatened by the act of humanity that was in plain view.

 He Murdered, he abused a woman and killed a child so where are all the
 woman's rights people she was nursing. Where are all the screams

 ultra violent games that program our children to school shootings might

Russia's Navy Showing Signs of Strength - Perhaps Due to Help from U.S.

The Russian navy recently began trials of a third-generation Akula II-class
nuclear-powered attack submarine, the Gepard, in the White Sea. Moscow has
also deployed a Delta III nuclear missile submarine in the Pacific Ocean.
Both vessels surprised Western intelligence.

Russia is signaling renewed will to emerge as an important naval power.
Successive Russian governments left the navy to rot in port. Now President
Vladimir Putin's government is directing scant resources into construction
and finds shipbuilding boosted by orders from abroad.

Russia's ship program also appears to be aided by an unwitting suspect: the
U.S. Navy. The Russian navy apparently has garnered significant technology
that will make future submarines quieter and harder to detect. This
technology appears to have come from espionage allegedly conducted by former
FBI agent Robert Hanssen, according to intelligence sources. The U.S. Navy
reportedly is investigating the extent to which its submarine program was
penetrated.

But Russia's navy still needs significant financial infusions in coming years
to take part in global naval competition.

The attack submarine Gepard was estimated to be five years behind schedule
and was believed to be part of a body of evidence reflecting the Russian
fleet's poor state. The Gepard, however, represents an important departure
from recent shipbuilding trends.

In some respects, the new sub is believed to be superior to the U.S. Navy's
Los Angeles-class attack subs. Capable of moving as fast and as quietly, the
Gepard reportedly can dive deeper than the American vessels and has more
firepower.

Russia's government has moved to boost military funding, with a significant
portion going to the navy. But espionage may be helping the navy gain
advanced capabilities quickly and on the cheap. In the wake of Hanssen's
arrest, it appears Russian espionage may have compromised U.S. submarine
secrets.

Intelligence sources say the U.S. government is investigating how badly the
American program was compromised. The investigation may focus on possible
pilfering of quieting technologies.

Russia is developing new naval technologies for the first time in years.
Additionally, an increase in foreign orders is infusing much-needed dollars
into Russia's shipbuilding industry. For example on March 5, the Baltic Plant
Shipyard in St. Petersburg laid the keel for the first of three 4,000-ton
frigates for the Indian navy, which is also awaiting delivery of an aircraft
carrier.

Some shipbuilding companies also are making new investments in research and
development.

Meanwhile, Russia is finishing a new naval doctrine aimed at eliminating
supply and logistics problems and introducing more regular training, as well
as preserving the structures of the Northern, Pacific, Baltic and Black Sea
Fleets and the Caspian Sea flotilla.

The roadmap calls for building new flagships over the next five years and
total rearmament by 2020.

For now, the state of the Russian navy remains dismal; only 40 percent to 60
percent of personnel can fulfill their assignments due to aging and often
inoperable ships and equipment. But the Putin government is gambling that
with enough money and technology it can rebuild Russian sea power. If
Russia's navy fails, however, it will dwindle to fewer than 60 ships in a
little more than decade.

IT MIGHT be fine and dandy with some of you that the government of the
United States has thrown the book at an 88-year-old nun and her 68-
year-old kid sister, who is also a nun. Then again, maybe you don't even
know about this.

Last month, in Columbus, Ga., U.S. Magistrate G. Mallon Faircloth
apparently decided to make the world safe from religious women of
conscience who peacefully trespass on federal property -- specifically,
the military training facility at Fort Benning formerly known as the
School of the Americas:

He sentenced Franciscan nun Dorothy Hennessey, 88, and her younger
sister, Gwen, 68, who is also a Franciscan nun, to six months each in
federal prison -- the maximum possible penalty.

Since 1990, when Maryknoll priest Roy Bourgeois and a handful of other
protesters showed up at the gates of the school (recently renamed the
Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation), it has been
targeted by tens of thousands of demonstrators. Every October, adults,
students and little kids gather at the entrance to Fort Benning to decry
the school's deadly role in Latin American politics and to demand its
closure.

Some of the protesters -- more each year -- cross the line and
trespass onto the grounds. Usually, they carry coffins and name
placards that represent the people who've died at the hands of SOA
graduates.

The Hennessey sisters were among several thousand who crossed the
line last October and got arrested. So were two other nuns from different
orders -- Elizabeth Anne McKenzie from the Sisters of St. Joseph and
Miriam Spencer from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. Faircloth
slapped them with the maximum six months in prison, too. McKenzie is
71, Spencer, 75.

Proving that he is an interdenominational kind of guy, Faircloth also sent
a Quaker couple from Ohio -- Bill Houston, 72, and Hazel Tulecke, 77 --
to federal prison. Like the nuns, Houston got the max, but Tulecke
received a break: only three months.

Altogether, 26 peaceful trespassers were sentenced by the judge. Most
(21) got the max, but two got off with a few years probation. One man
from Mississippi, Steve Jacobs, received two 6-month sentences.
Merciful magistrate that he is, Faircloth told Gwen Hennessey that she
didn't have to report to the federal pen at Pekin, Ill. -- the nearest prison
to her order's Dubuque, Iowa, motherhouse -- until after she celebrates
the 50th anniversary of taking her vows.

He also offered the older Dorothy the option of serving her sentence
under motherhouse arrest in Dubuque. According to the National
Catholic Reporter, Sister Dorothy told the judge, No thanks because
she is not an invalid and wanted to be treated the same as her 25 co-
defendants.

Two of 15 Hennessey siblings, Dorothy and Gwen told the Reporter that
their peaceful civil disobedience was a kind of activist memorial to their
late brother, Franciscan friar Ron Hennessey. He served for 34 years as
a missionary in Latin America and was friends with Salvadoran
Archbishop Oscar Romero.

Romero's 1980 assassination was master-minded by graduates of the
School of the Americas.

Like their fellow convicts, the Hennessey sisters said they weren't
looking forward to jail, but they planned to make the best of it.
Said Dorothy: If there's time left after we get out we might want to go
into prison ministry.

Just knowing that those two women will be off the street for six months
should really make us all sleep better at night, don't you think?

Hey, we need to hear some well-earned applause for business. According to a
judge in a California class action lawsuit against oil companies, Justice
Stanley Mosk said that the 1996 lawsuit presented evidence that the
petroleum companies may have possessed the motive, opportunity and means to
unlawfully conspire. ''But that is all. That is not enough,'' Mosk said.

Are such charges likely to be any more truthful today when Governor Gray
Davis and his Democratic cronies try to shift the blame on oil companies for
the California energy crisis? I doubt it, and for additional good reason
thanks to this judge. Business can fairly be accused of having suspicious
motives and ample opportunities, but when business comes up completely
exonerated of allegations of price fixing and collusion thrown against them,
it's a sure sign that business too often gets a bad rap from those
Marxist-inspired opponents.

 from a burning candle can exceed standards the agency sets for outdoor
 air quality.

 If I were someone who had a health problem like asthma, and I were
 looking for things to prevent aggravating my respiratory problems,
 candles and incense are two things I would seriously consider getting
 rid of, says Michael Osborne of the EPA.

 The National Candle Association's Valerie Cooper says the concerns are
 overstated because the highest level of particulates was seen only when
 the candles smoldered.

 She said: Their conclusions clearly say under normal conditions candles
 didn't produce significant amounts of particulates.

 The association and EPA suggest trimming candle wicks to a quarter inch,
 ventilating the house and keeping lit candles out of drafts.

  Some of Britain's biggest companies are running their internet operations
on systems installed in a 300ft-deep nuclear blast-proof bunker to protect
customers from violent anti-capitalist campaigners.

  They are renting space in hermetically sealed rooms capable of
withstanding a one Kiloton explosion, electro-magnetic pulse bombs,
electronic eavesdropping and chemical and biological warfare.

  Hundreds of companies have already installed systems in The Bunker -
formerly known as RAF Ash, outside Sandwich in Kent - and dozens more are
understood to be queuing up for space. They have been driven underground
by the IRA bombings of Canary Wharf and Bishopsgate in London and,
increasingly, by concerns over the operations of anarchists behind
sophisticated protests such as the May Day anti-capitalist rallies.

  At stake is billions of pounds worth of business conducted over the
internet. Companies are concerned that while electronic security - using
increasingly sophisticated encryption codes - is gradually making
customers feel more confident about conducting credit-card transactions
over the internet, the physical side of e-business is still vulnerable.
The fear is that servers, the small electronic boxes through which
customer traffic and business transactions on the web are channelled,
could be physically vulnerable to theft, damage or sabotage.

  For companies conducting business solely over the internet, the loss of a
server could be catastrophic; while offline there can be no sales and no
income, and customers will go elsewhere. Records, too, are vulnerable to
attack, hacking or simple damage, resulting in shut-downs that could cost
even traditional companies millions of pounds.

  Now organisations such as Scottish Widows, BTCellnet, Richer Sounds and
the Bank Automated Clearance System - which deals with inter-bank
transactions - have acted, putting their e-business and confidential
dealings out of harm's way behind guards, barbed wire, dogs, electronic
detection systems, millions of tons of earth, 4m of concrete, pressurised
air locks and rows of steel doors up to 18in thick.

  This isn't paranoia or fantasy, this is the future, said Dr Ian Angell,
professor of information systems at the London School of Economics and
author of The New Barbarian Manifesto. There are sophisticated
anti-capitalists out there who feel a great deal of resentment against the
business world. These are the new Luddites and, given half a chance, they
would smash the machine to pieces.

  Behind The Bunker is a company called AL Digital Communications,
established by the brothers Adam and Ben Laurie and Dominic Hawken. Ben
Laurie is already revered in the computing world as the man who co-wrote
Apache-SSL, perhaps the best-known encryption technology available over
the internet - a tool used by some anti-capitalists when arranging
demonstrations.

  Three years ago, AL Digital heard that an RAF facility with state-of-the
art electronics and communications systems was to be auctioned off. RAF
Ash was one of four underground command and control centres at the heart
of Britain's national air defence system. As part of a cost-cutting
exercise, it was to be mothballed only seven years after undergoing a
complete overhaul and upgrade.

  The AL Digital team made a sealed bid - still secret, according to the
Ministry of Defence - and the 60,000sq ft bunker with 18 acres of land was
theirs. The facility was designed to withstand a nuclear attack without
disrupting RAF computer systems, Dominic Hawken said. Their computers
were about radar, but there is little difference between that and hosting
a website. Some people have argued that our defences are a little over the
top, but they're here now ? what can we do, shave a little off the walls?

  To enter, visitors must pass through security checks before being allowed
through layer after layer of restricted access; of the 49 employees on
site, only a handful are allowed into the bowels of the structure. Here,
one finds doors that take two people to open and concrete grottoes called
Faraday cages that act as electric buffers between the hostile outside and
the environmentally pure, air-filtered inside.

  There are three back-up power systems big enough to fire up a small town
- when busy, the National Grid buys energy from The Bunker's four
turbines. There are dedicated telecommunications lines installed for the
RAF

No militia was ever directly tied to the explosion so this was pretty much a fabrication. So cui bono, indeed! Here is yet another theory on what caused the actual explosion which resulted in columns at the rear being more damaged than those nearer the truck and other inconsistencies with the 'fertilizer bomb' explanation. The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to
dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to
assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which
the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the
opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel
them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that
they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among
these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these
rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from
the consent of the governed. That whenever any Form of Government becomes
destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to
abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such

The history of the present King of Great Britain [George III] is a history of
repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the
establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let
Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the
public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing
importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be
obtained, and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of
people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in
the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable,
and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose
of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly
firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

Wonder why Condit does not take a lie detector test as any innocent man
would and when I say innocent - well as his Aide said the little girl
had no relationship with Condit other than friendship; but, on the other

Well, Nessie, I basically agree with what you are saying but
that was NOT the issue about which I was asking.  I apparently
did not express myself well.  I was saying that just ANN
COULTER was not considered extremists and giving some examples
of possible groups generally considered one way or the other,
like Jerry Falwell on the right and maybe Marxist on the left
as possible people who would be counted extremists for
contrast.

My question was what was wrong with posting the weekly,
nationally syndicated column of a person who is NOT extreme,
frequent visitor of talk show news pundits on TV, etc. Ann
Counter.  Why does this deem me a fool and her article
'irritating' and 'propaganda' that requires I be so informed
by the listowner?  You, yourself, have raised the very subject
she does with her article.  It is how people view the ideology
of others as being taught in schools, etc. at the expense of
their tax dollars.  You have said you do not like the
superstitions of others so taught.  She is aying what is so
magic about the 'after school' aspect of what goes on when it
has been going on all day.

Why is it wrong to post this?  Is this forum for liberal views
only because when I signed up, I understood something very
differently about different views, etc. all coming together
and Hegelian dialectic and all sides being necessary to get a
complete picture.  If this post is inappropriate, I want to
clearly know that.  I will not post material that is in any
way inappropriate to this list.  I do not, on the other hand,
appreciate being given the impression that all sides were free
to post if they are not.  Just asking for clarification as to
why a Coulter post is not welcome when some post up to two
entire newsletters of much more extreme material, page after
page.

I seem to have missed some rule or other and want to know what
it is and where it is located because I got the same deal when
I posted a Neal Boortz article.  Coulter is Republican and
Boortz is a Libertarian.  If this is a liberal forum, I want t
o know and that is what I am trying to find out.

I have been reading the articles about the Mormon church on David's site and
I just wanted to tell you that you are definitely on the right track. I was
raised Mormon here in Fairbanks, Alaska. I was married in the Salt Lake
Temple in April 1980.

The ceremonies, word for word, were exactly the same as the Masonic rituals.
I especially was disgusted by the part of the ritual where I was told that my
husband would have to "bring me into heaven" - I could not get there by
myself, no matter how good I was. My husband ran off with an underage hooker
one month after we returned from the temple, and informed me that I must
remain married to him, because he wanted to be able to "get some" from me any
time he was bored with the hooker.

The church told me, when I complained to them, that I must do as he said, and
that I could not divorce him. Well, I knew where the court house was, so I
got my divorce, anyway and left the church in the dust.

Since that time, I have investigated several organized religions, and have
decided that I am a spiritual person, but not a religious one. Tell David to
keep on telling the truth!

1. McVeigh was a U.S. Government agent. To the end he has suported the
ridiculous government line--that there was no conspiracy and that an
ammonium-fertilizer truck bomb alone caused the enormous damage to the
Alfred E. Murrah building. McVeigh also displayed Masonic apoplexy -- he
asked to be executed.

2. Carol Howe was an ATF informant who overheard McVeigh and his numerous
unindicted accomplices plotting to blow up the Alfred E. Murrah building.
She told her ATF supervisor about the bombing before it occurred. Federal
Judge Richard Matsch prohibited Howe from testifying at McVeigh's trial,
saying her testimony might confuse the jurors.

3. The FBI refused to investigate McVeigh's possible co-conspirators:
Witnesses also believe (Gregory) McCrea and (Chevie) Kehoe met Timothy
McVeigh at the Shadows Motel shortly before the April, 1995 Oklahoma City
bombing...A former manager of the motel has reported seeing McVeigh visiting
Kehoe there a few weeks before the Oklahoma City bombing. ...But the
possible link between the Shadows Motel, Kehoe and McVeigh has been given
little, if any, attention by the FBI...With McVeigh and his friend Terry
Nichols convicted of the Oklahoma City bombing, there is reluctance to
reopen the investigation, federal officials say. (Spokesman-Review, April
11, 1999, pp. B-1 and B-6. ). Editor's note: Kehoe killed gun dealer William
Mueller because Mueller had knowledge of the conspiracy behind McVeigh.
Kehoe told the manager of the Shadows motel, in advance, of a catastrophe
set to occur on April 19, 1995.

4. The book, The Oklahoma City Bombing and The Politics of Terror by David
Hoffman (Venice, Calif: Feral House, 1998) was pulped by the publisher, on
orders of the FBI, because this book gives the names of the government
agents behind McVeigh. Nearly the entire print run was destroyed. This book
commands $100 or more on the rare book market. If there was no conspiracy,
why did the FBI move to have David Hoffman's conspiracy book destroyed?

5. Brig. General Benton Partin, the U.S. Air Force's leading authority on
bomb damage, has repeatedly stated that the pattern of damage at the Alfred
E. Murrah building in Oklahoma City ...would have been technically
impossible without supplementing demolition charges at some of the
reinforcing concrete column bases. General Partin said that a truck filled
with ammonium-nitrate could not have caused the degree of damage done to the
Murrah building. His complete report was reproduced in Hoffman's book. In
other words, other bombs were placed inside the building because this was an
inside job.

6. The Murrah building was quickly demolished and McVeigh quickly executed
to cover up the trail of evidence leading to the government conspiracy
behind the Oklahoma City bombing; a bombing which reaped huge rewards for
the Federal police state in the form of legislation passed by Congress in
the wake of the bombing, enabling the further curtailment of civil liberties
and the further expansion of police powers and police budgets.

Your media should be reporting these facts, exposing the Federal
government and following up these leads. Instead, the media are partners
with the government in the conspiracy--covering up the truth about the
murder of 169 people--victims who are but pawns in the Cryptocracy's game.

 Phillip Johnson began his talk on intelligent design at Pacific Lutheran
 University with a sort of victory cry.

 Ten years ago, Johnson wrote a book called Darwin on Trial that disputed
 Darwinian evolution and launched a movement. Johnson, a professor emeritus
 of law at University of California at Berkeley, and other academics
produced
 the concept of intelligent design. They assert the complexities of the
Earth
 must be the work of a designer.

 Johnson had good reason to be buoyant last month at PLU. Recent front-page
 stories in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times describe intelligent
 design as a credible foe of evolution.

 Our enemies may not like us, but they know that we're getting ahead, that
 we're winning the argument, Johnson told 400 people in a packed lecture
 room.

 However, most scientists disagree.

 Their ideas have been looked at by the scientific community and nobody's
 convinced they've got anything scientifically useful, said Eugenie Scott,
 executive director of the National Center for Science Education in
Oakland,
 Calif. I would say it's distinctly premature to say he's winning any kind
 of argument. The center is a nonprofit organization that advocates for
the
 teaching of evolution.

 In Tacoma and Seattle people have flocked to hear Johnson, the father of
 intelligent design. A crowd of more than 700 overflowed Kane Hall at the
 University of Washington last month to hear him.

 He offered an approach more intellectually intricate than that of biblical
 creationists, who assert the Earth is only 6,000 to 8,000 years old and
was
 created in six days. Johnson said during an interview that he accepts the
 age of the Earth as 4.6 billion years but that's not the real issue. Nor
is
 the issue how one feels about the Genesis account of creation, said
Johnson,
 60, an evangelical Christian. Speaking in his rapid-fire style, Johnson
 asserted that the issue is evolution and how it is based on the philosophy
 of naturalism.

 Biologists say that science simply assumes that there is not and can be
no
 designer, Johnson said. It's not a matter of evidence; it's a matter of
 assumption. You begin to see why a lawyer took this up.

 Intelligent design is the proposition that you need a source of
 intelligence in order to account for the wonders of biology. You do not
see
 the designer directly, of course. What you see (are) the effects of
design.

 Johnson is anything but a lone ranger in his battle. The research of two
 other so-called fathers of the intelligent design movement - Michael Behe
 and William Dembski - is funded by a nonprofit

I received this from an email list. The email is (I think) written by a Kiwi who is in 
Nepal. There is apparently an uprising in process-- the Crown Prince was shot in the 
back (but supposedly shot himself). No one is buying it and the people are revolting.

FUCK the last two days have been some of the most amazing in my life.

The news you are getting in NZ is probably CNN bullshit. The late King and family in 
Nepal have been a symbol for the people of being independent from imperalist rule for 
a start so thatis partly why the grief is so immense. The kings brother has just now 
been crowned king and the people are uprising. The kings brother is much hated by 
nepalese people and activists alike. He was cast out from Nepal for corruption and 
went to live in India. The campaign agaisnt coprruption is huge and the pruime 
minister is also a target. So when the whole family (actually 13 people) were 
massacred the govt blamed the crown prince saying he shot everyone and then himself. 
Noone believed this. Now the govt says it was an accident. Fuck sorry if this is crazy 
but I am typing hard out we are under threat from the army who are everywhrere. So 
essentially the kings brother arranged for his son to kill everyone so he could be 
king. The pepole are not accepting him and there are riots everywhere.

Martial law has been impose and the conference is cancelled pretty much.A few of us 
are staying though and networking and supporting. The radical organisations that 
organised it have been outlawed under martial law and they fear arrest. A few of us 
have been caught up in demos on the street I think I have some good photos of the cops 
beating people with sticks but I was running as fast as I could at the time. 10 people 
have also been shot dead by the army.Ths is verty important to get out as they are 
refusing to let people report it. Also the only witness alive to the massacre has just 
been poisoned by the govt so there is no witness apart from the new kings son who 
people believe did it. The investigation commitee comprises of the ruling party only 
and is afarce. People are amazing here they have nothing but their bare hands and they 
are standing up to guns sticks knives I hope my photos are good. About 10 of us are 
keen to support the nepaese people and try and get the word back to our countries. We 
trekked into the peasant communites yesterday to share resources and food and they 
welcomed us like heros it was fucking incredible. But then we got trapped because the 
army said they would shoot us if we came back to our base. Crazy. We are reasonably 
safe becase we are forigners and we feel strongly about being part of making history. 
Nepal amy face civil war and the end of monarchy at this rate and it is a privilege 
beyond belief to be here. we are a tight knit group and hope to make some difference.

I have to run again they are imposing curfew in half an hour and if you are outside 
you are get shot.

No, Kris, I do not think Liberals are out to get me.  Nor
shape-shifting reptoids nor the Bush Crime Family.  I do not
think I am the target of anything specific.  Most likely it is
indifference and neglect on the part of govt/corps/orgs that
will do the most harm.  I think the most sinister force in the
world is probably the Global/UN/NWO/Depopulation movement.
IMHO. Do not know how this ties in with post on social
engineering but sorry I posted it.  It just came out and that
is probably why it was posted by two different people
simultaneously.
I do not have any way of anticipating what you will and will
not like the tone of but it does not matter for it is your
