  1. Look at the search field.

What you see: The search icon is much further away from the left edge
of the field than the top or bottom.

What you should see: The search icon is the same distance from the

I upgraded from ubuntu 12.4 (with all updates) to ubuntu 12.10 beta 1.
  Before I had mysql-workbench-gpl package installed (I don't know whether I
installed it through ubuntu software center or from mysql web page).
I opended MySql workbench and closed it 15 minutes later without using it.
When I closed it it created a crush report and notified me that this is not a
supported ubuntu package so the report won't be sent (this is why I'm
describing this part - I don't know if this realy wasn't an ubuntu package in
12.04 or if this is another bug).

I had ubuntu software center opened and listed all the software that contains
word workbench.
I couldn't install MySQL workbench package from ubuntu software center (error
message popped up during instalation) so I deleted the previous package with:
sudo apt-get remove mysql-workbench-gpl
I started installing MySQL Workbench and noticed that mysql-workbench-gpl is
listed below so I clicked Remove button (this was already after I deleted the
package with the command above). At this point this crash report popped up.
All this time I haven't closed the ubuntu software center.

After all of this the package mysql-workbench-gpl is still present in
ubuntu software center under tehnical items but there is no install or
  remove button present.

Hi Daniel, and thank you for your report. Are you saying that both
update-manager *and* software-center are reporting internet connection
problems? I am also wondering if you are still seeing this symptom, or
if it has been resolved since.

Please let us know, and we can continue to help debug this from there.

Many thanks!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1057481] Re: SSL handshake failed: My purchase fails with error message

2012-09-27 Thread Gary Lasker
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1043011 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1043011

Hello Jarlath, thank you for your report and I'm sorry that you are
experiencing this issue. The error that you are seeing affects a small
percentage of credit card authorization services, and unfortunately, it
appears that your credit card is one of those affected.

This is an active bug already, bug 1043011, and I will mark this one as
a duplicate of that one. Please monitor bug 1043011 for the status of a
fix for this, and to add any additional info or comments that you may
have.

In the meantime until we get this bug fixed, and if you like, you could
instead use the PayPal option for payment. Using that option you can pay
with your credit card and you will bypass this issue.

Many thanks again for your help!
Gary

Hi Richard, and thank you for your bug report. So that we can try to
gather more information to help us to debug this issue, could you please
try running Software Center in debug mode from a terminal window as
follows:

  $ software-center --debug 2 /tmp/software-center-debug.log

Then follow the steps to reproduce the issue, and finally attach the
file /tmp/software-center-debug.log to this bug report.

I had been trying to install Drop Box which I had just downloaded.
I went to the terminal first and entered what the DropBox site said I should
enter to install it.
  This did not work.
So then I tried suco apt-get install dropbox and that did not work either.

So I thought perhaps I could install it using the Softward Center.
But when I double clicked Software Center in the Launchpad the Software
Center started but then within a few seconds disaappeared from the screen.I
powered down and then back up and tried again and it still jsut disappeared
after a few sceconds.

I am going to try to download a more up to date version and see if
  that will execute OK.

This is one of the two things causing USC banners to be lopsided to

It would be much nicer to be able to upload up to, say, three images

Title:
copy link address does not use X11 clipboard

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
If I view a package in USC which has a link, myDesktopCalendar for
example, I can right-click the link and select copy link address.
This allows me to copy a web or email address for contacting the
vendor. However, I cannot then paste it into most X11 programs. The
normal mechanism is to use a X11 atom which can then be sent to any
other program, usually with a middle-click. It's not exactly a
clipboard as such, since it doesn't store a copy of the data... but
it is the traditional mechanism used in X11 programs.

In USC, the GTK clipboard seems to be used instead, exclusively, which
means only programs written in specific toolkits can be pasted into.
Most GTK programs I've seen support both the X11 method and the GTK
method, but USC lacks the X11 support.

I have some sample pygtk code for a working example, if it helps, but
I wrote it in ~2000 or so and the API may have changed since then.

  I'm using USC 5.2.5 in Precise amd64.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1040648] Re: Ubuntu Software Center has issue displaying package specifics

2012-09-18 Thread Gary Lasker
Hi Scott, and thank you for your report. I have looked at the
screenshots that you've attached, and they do not actually match Ubuntu
Software Center in Quantal at all. Do you have any customizations that
might explain this? A standard install of Ubuntu Quantal 12.10 will not
exhibit the problems that you describe.

Please let us know. Thanks again!

Bug description:
Occasionally USC editors may want to put up a banner promoting an
entire category or (more usually) a subcategory. For example, a banner
for Dash Search Plugins, Photography, or Electronics.

This requires, first, the USC client to understand and present
exhibits of this type that it receives from the USC server. And
second, admin UI on the server that allows exhibiting a category or
subcategory instead of an application, group of applications, or URL.

When we search pcmanx-gtk2 by keyword 'pcman', we can not find pcmanx-gtk2 in
Ubuntu Software Center.
But we can find its fork, i.e. gemanx-gtk2.
This is very weird because gemanx-gtk2 and pcmanx-gtk2 should have the same
result especially when their code bases are almost the same.
There is an upstream bug report at
http://code.google.com/p/pcmanx-gtk2/issues/detail?id=27 .

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1033610] Re: Failed to submit review

2012-09-17 Thread Gary Lasker
Hi Deborah, and thank you for your bug report. Are you still
experiencing this issue with recent versions of Software Center? Many
fixes have been made since then and it's very possible that this issue
has been resolved for you. If that is the case, please let us know so
that we can close this bug, or feel free to close it yourself.

If you are still getting the error, however, please let us know that as
well and we will work to investigate the issue further.

Thanks! Your help is much appreciated!

This error can be easily duplicated, from multiple machines running
Ubuntu Studio 12.04 LTS, and effects every installed package I've
tried to review. The error message varies only in the name of the
  package installed.

There are developers and end users being hurt by this bug, we depend
on up-to-date reviews a lot, and this particular developer (of the
above package) is one of the better ones that deserves some positive
  feedback!

I know I reported this type of bug before (about 6 weeks back, I
think), sorry for the duplicate report, but I can't find the original,
and it appears this one isn't being dealt with?

Hello shaquille, and thank you for your report. From the stacktrace that
you've attached, it appears that the log file for Software Center was
somehow corrupted or otherwise not readable. You've identified a
workaround and that should do the trick. If you have tried the
workaround, has the solved the problem for you then? Please let us know
if it has recurred.

Many thanks for your help!

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 12.04
  USC 5.2

  [TEST CASE]
  1. Launch the current Ubuntu Software Center in Precise.
  2. Click the Installed toolbar button to access the list of installed
applications.
  3. Choose an installed application to remove (choose one for which there is a
corresponding icon in the Unity launcher).
  4. Click the More Info button.
  5. In the details view for the application, click the Remove button and
enter the password for the remove if prompted.
  6. The uninstall process begins and the progress bar moves in Software Center.
  7. At the end of the install process, verify that the corresponding icon in
the Unity launcher has *not been removed.
  8. Close Ubuntu Software Center.
  9. Update to both the software-center *and* unity packages in
precise-proposed.
  10. Repeat steps 1 through 6.
  11. This time, at the end of the install process, verify that the
corresponding icon in the Unity launcher is *removed*.

  [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
Risk of regression is very low as this is fixed by the new add-to-launcher
timing from Software Center, and the code in Unity is unchanged for this (see
comment #4 for this bug). Just verifying that the correct icon is actually
removed should be enough.

  ---

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Start USC
  2. Select a program to install
  3. Click “Install”
(in this moment icon of the program flies to Launcher)
  4. Enter your password to authenticate
  5. After the program is installed click “Remove” to uninstall the program

  What happen:
  Icon stays in Launcher

  Expected results:
Icon of the program disappears from Launcher

Bug description:
Several events led me to a failed installation in the software center
(bug 1000262 has some details). SW center was showing the screen for
the app I tried to purchase/install (Command Conquer Tiberium
Alliances). From that screen I clicked Reinstall Previous Purchases
from the FIle menu. I was presented with a screen asking me to login
to Launchpad. I chose cancel instead of logging in to LP.

  Expected results:
I expected to see either the screen I was looking at (the app I was looking
at previously) or the home page of SW center

  Actual results:
The main SW center UI was cleared out, no longer showing the screen for my
app. Instead it's a blank, grey panel with the large spinning 'wait' cursor
(see attached screenshot). It's stuck in this state, and has been for a couple
minutes. The app clearly isn't going to do anything on its own, despite the
wait cursor.

To get SW center out of this state I clicked the Installed button then the
All Software button. The UI is now back to normal. The UI was never blocked,
it just wasn't doing anything.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1048912] [NEW] Visual glitch in lobby view on startup

2012-09-10 Thread Gary Lasker
Public bug reported:

Software Center version 5.3.11, the Quantal Quetzal

There is an ugly layout glitch in the lobby view every time Ubuntu
Software Center is started when recommendations are enabled. After the
recommendations panel loads, the upper panel is not laid out correctly
and the recommendations panel header items initally overlap the What's
New panel above. In addition, the Categories panel to the left is not
resized correctly. These visual issues are corrected as soon as the
mouse is passed over this area of the view.

Note that I could create a screenshot because the act of creating it
corrects the bad layout.

If a developer wants to restrict to a specific country only (e.g. US)

Feature Freeze Exception: Recommender feedback (no UI change)

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
Hello! We'd like to request a FFe for a small (but very useful)
feature that we'd like to add to Ubuntu Software Center. This is the
client-side implementation for the feature described in bug 944060.

Essentially, the feature works like this. If a person has opted-in to
receive recommendations in Software Center (and so has agreed to
upload a list of their installed packages to the recommender service
as a basis for their recommendations), we want to augment our ability
to improve our recommendations by signaling to the recommender service
whenever an item that has been recommended has actually been
installed. It's as simple as that. This kind of implicit feedback is
expected to be very useful in improving the quality of the
  recommendations that we make.

Note that if the user has *not* opted in to the recommendations
service, no such call is ever made. This feature is inactive in that
  case.

The feature is completely implemented in the back end and does not
involve any changes in the UI. The attached branch contains the code.
Note that there is a thorough unit test for the feature included in
  the branch.

The risk of regression is pretty much negligible.

Once we have your approval we will merge the branch to USC trunk for
  release in Quantal.

  Many thanks!!

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
There should be a way of tracking if given recommendation was acted by
user, that is, if recommended application was actually installed.

This would require implementation on both server and client. The
server side needs to provide an api for client to call when
recommendation caused user to install an aplication.

The client side needs to track which recommendation (if any) was
displayed before user installed given application.

This requires tracking user behaviour, but it's part of getting
feedback of the quality of recommendations we are computing. At the
point where this call will be used, user already had opted in into
  recommendation system.

I wanted to write some flashcards in korean. I navigated to the

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1044107] [NEW] Feature Freeze Exception: Recommender feedback (no UI change)

2012-08-30 Thread Gary Lasker
Public bug reported:

Hello! We'd like to request a FFe for a small (but very useful) feature
that we'd like to add to Ubuntu Software Center. This is the client-side
implementation for the feature described in bug 944060.

Essentially, the feature works like this. If a person has opted-in to
receive recommendations in Software Center (and so has agreed to upload
a list of their installed packages to the recommender service as a basis
for their recommendations), we want to augment our ability to improve
our recommendations by signaling to the recommender service whenever an
item that has been recommended has actually been installed. It's as
simple as that. This kind of implicit feedback is expected to be very
useful in improving the quality of the recommendations that we make.

Note that if the user has *not* opted in to the recommendations service,
no such call is ever made. This feature is inactive in that case.

The feature is completely implemented in the back end and does not
involve any changes in the UI. The attached branch contains the code.
Note that there is a thorough unit test for the feature included in the
branch.

The risk of regression is pretty much negligible.

Once we have your approval we will merge the branch to USC trunk for
release in Quantal.

Many thanks!!

Strip whitespace from the Package name(s): field in the exhibits

Status in Developer registration portal:

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I set up and published an exhibit for multiple packages yesterday, and
had some fun this morning debugging why the exhibit was not visible on
  the client.

It turns out that (apart from some other issues on the client,
discussed with mvo on IRC) the client cannot display multiple packages
for download if there is whitespace between the comma-separated list.
  That is:

  * 'lightread, fogger, picsaw' - does not work
  * 'lightread,fogger,picsaw' - does work

In order to be a bit more robust, I think the server should strip the
whitespace before publishing the JSON for the client to consume.
Alternatively, the client could also do the stripping, so I'm adding a
  task for it too.
