When we have such generic product names, users not fluent in English would not have a clue what this extension is doing. At the same time users fluent in English would instantly understand that this is something about to make presentations smaller. This is not fair to our users as it does not transfer associations present in the English language to the localized software. I see this practice against the goals of the localization project. For the reference, other software vendors do translate such generic names (like Notepad, Wordpad, Paint, Control panel...) keeping users happy. [l10n-dev] l10n and nlc wiki pages
Hi all, I made few small updates to our wiki in an effort to separate UI/Help translation documentation from docs on other localization tasks, localized release QA and NLC topics like managing a native language web site or documentation. This will leave space to add more info and make links to other pages describing extras localization (autocorrect data, dictionaries, hyphenation patterns, templates and other non-messages resources). It will also help to remove duplicate and obsolete content. For a start, I made changes to Translation:General Information page: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Translation:General_Information separating pootle and non-pootle workflow and refreshing documentation on SDF/POT/PO handling. There are still some info on release testing I would like to move into some other page. Then I removed duplicate info from NLC:New Translators Start here page: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/NLC:New_Translators_Start_here I believe this wiki page can be a gateway to all other content together with a famous NLC:ReleaseChecklist wiki page: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/NLC:ReleaseChecklist As a next step I will move some info from http://l10n.openoffice.org/localization/ to the mentioned wiki pages. Can someone with write permissions add HTTP meta redirection from http://l10n.openoffice.org/languages.html to http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Languages killing deprecated table on the web site? The notice is already there but I believe that 3 years after the notice obsolete content should be deleted now. I will join and post some info I have from guides like "Translation of the OpenOffice.org Extras How-To Manual" by Volker Ahrendt and Ilko Höpping [1], Translate Toolkit OpenOffice.org localization Guide [2] and famous KhmerOS localization guides written by Javier Sola [3]. We could than work on this item by item to see if documentation is still valid and are there any recent updates to the sources. On some other items requiring external translations we already have wiki articles like: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/HowTo_localize_qatesttool_environment http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/SL/Using_TeX_hyphenation_patterns_in_OpenOffice.org http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/HSQLDB_Localization http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Extensions/website/Translating http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Templates/website/translation Still information on many others mentioned in the (obsolete?) guides is missing. I see your comment about having a clear list of items that need updating between releases as very important. My guess is that with translation delivery deadline this close this discussion does not get necessary attention from other native lang teams, but hopefully this will change after the translation handover. Can I access po files via svn? > -> http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOo_and_Subversion OpenOffice.org does not use SVN anymore, all sources are in the Mercurial repository[2]. But OpenOffice.org does not use PO files internally for message handling. You can extract SDF file from OpenOffice.org sources and then convert it to PO. There are some recent changes so I do not if I am right, but you will need complete source tree to run localize script and extract SDF file. This is why OOo developers do publish extracted SDF and you can get it from extended folder on some mirrors [3]. You can then use oo2po tool from translate-toolkit (oo2po -P -i en-US.sdf -o pot) to generate set of POT files. In the past POTs where also published by developers but AFAIK this does not happen anymore. If your team is using Pootle at sunvirtuallab.com for translating, OpenOffice.org release engineers would merge your translations with new templates and (luckily) you do not get to worry about it. Goran, can you maybe help us see what is currently missing > in pomigrate2 to handle this situation? Hi Friedel, all Thank you for your comments. I do not know a lot about translate toolkit source, so please forgive me if I say something wrong here. What I would like it to have your feedback on some ideas and this may lead to a better work flow or better tools. I should say that I am very happy to be able to use Translate toolkit. It helps me a lot to create better translations for OpenOffice.org, as I am sure it helps many others. What I see as missing from pomigrate2 is that PO catalogs should be actually read on migration, relaying just on filenames is not reliable enough. I think about OpenOffice.org as a single gettext domain. This split to many PO files that we have is to help us managing translations but these files are not different domains. In KDE or GNOME you do not get string moved from the Minesweeper game to the email client between releases while in OpenOffice.org it is easy to have string moved between modules. Using pomigrate2 with compendium option enabled is close to what I would like and I can usually get better result when using it but using compendium with the current from POT files as generated by oo2po is not the same as moving as messages are merged together. I want to apply compendium after the messages are moved to get fuzzy matching against new strings, but I would like to have existing translation simply moved between files. As pomigrate2 relies on filenames it also can give a huge bloat. When testautmation was included in the m83 SDF by mistake we got a new UI.po file in the testautomation directory with 3 new messages. pomigrate2 found a large UI.po file in the source three and copied hundreds of messages kept as deprecated translation memory. Three new messages where actually left as untranslated. :) = Contexts everywhere = First I would like if oo2po could provide msgctxt field to all messages and not just for duplicates inside a single PO file. Resource IDs that could be found in the SDF file are exactly what gettext context field is designed for. I know that this will create a lot of repetitive messages but we all learned long ago that every string should have its context. Different languages make distinction between noun and verb or have rich morphology and require different word forms for different adjective case etc. Translators can always auto apply translation memory to quickly translate same messages with different contexts and poconflicts can be used to check if message is translated differently while it should not be. I believe there is no any drawback from using contexts with all messages. = Merge reading all catalogs = Having msgctxt/msgid, a smarter pomigrate2 could just look for a exact match when merging translations with new POT files. This could be implemented either by building a compendium and asking msgmerge to do it or having a smarter dedicated code traversing every message from new templates. Removed messages could be kept as deprecated translation memory in the most probably file (same if it exists, in the file where most of the messages are moved or, finally, in the file with the most similar filename). Now if for any reason resource ID changes we will always have good fuzzy matching working on that string. I did not do any tests but I strongly believe this will keep all translations when messages are moved and resource ID stay the same and still provide a good fuzzy match if resource ID changes. = Some unrelated comments = I wrote a wrapper around msgmerge to add --previous flag when called from pomigrate2. That is very useful option of msgmerge when reviewing fuzzy matches. I like even more ediff output style as provided by Pology[1] (run posieve diff-previous lang.po after msgmerge --previous) but that can be handled later by editors. When using version control (we are using Subversion repository for Serbian OpenOffice.org translations) pomerge from translate toolkit makes a mess. It outputs all messages, not just a modified ones making version control diffs hard to comprehend. I like the speed of pogrep and the power of pofilter but for merging correction back I use Pology and posieve with merge_corr_tree sieve. (with pogrep output in ui-check run posieve merge_corr_tree ui -spathdelta:ui:ui-check to merge fixes). It goes over all catalogs in the ui three, looking for same in the ui-check three and updates only modified messages keeping very nice diffs. It would be great to have pomerge doing the same. Updated POT files are available at http://goranrakic.com/tmp/tcmpot/ It is also possible to merge existing translations using included merge script. Italian tests as merged PO files are available from http://goranrakic.com/tmp/tcmpot/it/ There are 1079 untranslated and 104 words marked fuzzy in Italian translation out of about 28000 words in all TCM tests. I would like to provide merges for other languages on request as soon as time permits me or it would be even better if we can integrate this into our l10n process. The Python script I used to create them can be downloaded from http://goranrakic.com/tmp/tcm2po.tar.gz and PDF manual is included. I have added some modifications recently: 1) PO context field is used to tag test parts instead of source field 2) If translated test has "ENGLISH IS UPDATED" string the message will be marked as fuzzy in the merged PO file. [l10n-dev] Typing Cyrillic in the exported PDF form fails
I have received a complaint from one of our community members that it is not possible to type Cyrillic in the PDF form exported from OpenOffice.org. PDF readers like Evince ignores everything that is not ASCII, and others like FoxIt or Adobe Acrobat Reader display garbage for Cyrillic entry while allows Serbian Latin (č ć š...). This is a major bug as PDF forms can not be saved or printed correctly. Typing Cyrillic inside OpenOffice.org works as expected so it looks like the bug is in the PDF export code not setting some encoding property. What component should I fill a bug against and is this issue already reported in the past? I reproduced it using both 3.2.0 and 3.0 stable releases, with Serbian Cyrillic localization. Can other teams confirm are other locales affected as well? Speaking in the name of Serbian OOo community: - We are able to localize UI and keep it at 100% for several releases now for both Serbian Cyrillic (sr) and Serbian Latin (sh), making our own builds for Microsoft Windows and deb packages for GNU/Linux and distributing them from http://sr.openoffice.org/preuzmi.html (where http://download.openoffice.org/other.html is linking to this page) - We are working on help localization but we are far behind something like even 50% as there are other things we need to do first (spell checking, better hyphenation patterns, thesaurus, extensions and templates site localization, iz#97653 - Cyrillic support in digital signatures etc.) In the current process here are the issues we are facing with: Having just a language pack mean that users have to ***install English version first*** (navigating through Installation wizard on English language even we did translate all these messages), then install language pack, start OOo on English, go to Preferences, change UI language and restart OOo. I believe this is ***unnecessary complicated***. Some users will try to do it and fail or may start using English release. This is why we will continue to make our or kindly ask Pavel Janik and Maho Nakata to create full installation sets for sr and sh. But we would like to have ***auto-update feature inside our builds***. I got an impression that this is only possible with official builds. If I am wrong, I would like to know how can I enable this when compiling OOo for Microsoft Windows or GNU/Linux. Another issue is ***visibility of our builds***. Over 50% of sr.openoffice.org visitors come from www.openoffice.org so it is very important for us to have download.js script and http://download.openoffice.org/other.html page updated. In the past Frank Mau kindly did this by request but even months after 3.0.1 release I can not get this page updated. Some policy on this will be good to have. To conclude, having an official build for us will mean: More platforms + Better visibility + Auto Update Any other solution that can lead us to there will work great for us. In Serbian translation we are ignoring "on/off" and "toggle". Even in English those are just stop words that do no carry new information to the users. For example, messages like "Toggle Line Numbers" or "On/Off Line Numbers" usually appear next to some checkbox or on the toggle button so information about double-state is reflected by the GUI and we can translate it just as "Line Numbers" (in Serbian Latin "Brojevi redova", full translation would be "Uključi ili isključi brojeve redova" which is unusable). Re: [l10n-dev] creating localized langpacks for 0penOffice
You can not build language packs from PO files. You have to get full OpenOffice.org source tree, setup all dependencies for your target platform and compile OpenOffice.org from source. There are some pages on OOoWiki that will help you to do so. Then you can apply SDF file with translations (generated from PO files using po2oo) to source tree and create language packs for target release using dmake tool. Please note that this is not either quick or easy to do. The best thing you can do is to submit you translations to OpenOffice.org community and wait for Pavel (if he is still doing this, sorry if I am wrong) to create language packs for you. pofilter is very nice tool but it can create false positives. Still, you should check its output and fix all real errors you can find. -- Goran Rakic Serbian OpenOffice.org native-lang project lead У уто, 03. 02 2009. у 18:27 +0530, sandeep shedmake пише: > On Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 5:34 PM, Goran Rakic wrote: > > > У уто, 03. 02 2009. у 17:10 +0530, sandeep shedmake пише: > > > Hi, > > > > > > I am looking for creating a localized langpack for 00, so to avoid any > > > conditions that causes package to break due to wrong translations. > > > > > > Necessary links/pointers are helpful. > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > Are you able to compile localized OOo release? > > > Hi, > > > Actually, I managed to extract tree from respective .sdf > So, I have the tree. > > > I am not sure how reliably pofilter checks po file: > $pofilter --openoffice > > > How do i go for compilation of po-file-tree ? > > > > > > > > If you are, to create language packs just go to "instsetoo_native/util" > > directory inside build tree and run "dmake ooolanguagepack". > > > > > [sshed...@sshedmak instsetoo_native]$ pwd > /home/sshedmak/oo3.1/mr/instsetoo_native > > [sshed...@sshedmak instsetoo_native]$ tree > . > `-- inc_openoffice > `-- windows > `-- msi_languages.po > > 2 directories, 1 file > > > Above, I don't see the "instsetoo_native/util" directory > > I got to know the know the correct path for recompiling the tree. > > Also is it possible to compile without Dmake utility? > > OR > > is Dmake must (How about "make" or "cmake") ? > > > > > This will create language packs in your target format for every locale > > passed to configure script with "--with-lang" argument. > > > I have synced the -tree with DEV300_m40 tree. > > > > > > -- > > Goran Rakic > > Serbian OpenOffice.org > > native-lang project lead > > > > > > > > > > - > > To unsubscribe, e-mail: dev-unsubscr...@l10n.openoffice.org > > For additional commands, e-mail: dev-h...@l10n.openoffice.org > > > > - To unsubscribe, e-mail: dev-unsubscr...@l10n.openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: dev-h...@l10n.openoffice.org
