[URGENT] AOO binary files are missing - Please help!

2013-07-15 Thread Roberto Galoppini
We couldn't find a valid top-level dir to even begin to look for the 4.0
files.
Until we get precise instructions how to locate those files we can't
populate our system and eventually our mirrors.

Please help with this issue asap.

thanks,

Roberto

I think the important message for users is that languages can be added
incrementally, as the translations complete. They are not tied to the
main release schedule in the same way other product features are.

It will probably be annoying to some users to see a language appear in
one release, then not be on the next release date, but then appear a
month later, etc. But this is a self-correcting issue. The more
users who are annoyed by this timing the more potential volunteers we
have to correct it. The trick is to advertise that we need
volunteers on the NL page. For example, we did this for Turkish and
we now see a new volunteer introducing themselves on the L10N list
every few days:

In this specific case, for AOO 4.0, I'm suggesting we release any
additional languages that are 100% on September 16th. This is similar
to what we did for AOO 3.4.1. After that date I think we then wait
for AOO 4.1.

Releasing a new language should be rather easy and repeatable, so it is
something that we can do once a month (but I can understand that August
may be problematic due to holidays).

Ideally, we should have a monthly update, say around mid-month, where we:

1) Release new languages (of course, based on the same code revision as
4.0, exactly as done for 3.4.1) that have reached 100% UI translation.

2) Formally unrelated to #1, we make (unreleased) dev snapshots
available of languages that have UI at 75-99%.

People should work on a reliable build bot infra structure that can
provide builds for all major platforms (Linux, Windows, MacOS). And then
we can configure more languages on demand.
While there are periodic complaints about the build bots (e.g. when
there are breaking changes made to the source tree), the main bots are
pretty stable. They mainly break when broken. If you look at Windows
Snapshot build , the Windows
nightly build , and the Linux
64bit build
, you will notice that they are quite stable (esp. with the fix to the
hanging process issue)

We can ask again at infra for our CentOS linux 32 bot and Mac hardware,
and we have waited long enough on that front. But, are there any issues
we can identify with the current Windows snapshot build that make it
unusable?
We can configure more languages on these bots on demand right now. Is
there a technical reason you don't like them?

A.

I will be not the manual build bot ;-)

Proposing is fine but please think also about the realization.

You still need to fix the chroot error in the apache-dist-external rsync
module.
Either the path configured is wrong or there is a permission problem (by
default rsync accesses data using user "nobody").

Can you please help this?

Second best if you know where are those files and you want to upload them
this would work too.

Let me know asap.

Negative press? Do you have a link?

Was remembering a conversation from this list awhile back, mostly
rumblings from the blogs. Unfortunately a quick search of the archive
wasn't able to uncover anything. May be just my memory is getting faulty
with age.

Remember, we didn't drop anything. For example, we had released no
translation of French 4.0 last week, because 4.0 was not done. Now
that 4.0 is done and the translation is done, we can release both.
Does that mean we dropped French last week? No it just means it was
not ready to release yet.

Rob I know we didn't drop anything and most of our users will know it
also; however when we due a major release that does not include
languages that where there before it will be noticed and commented on.
The purpose of this post was not to rehash the minutia, but to solicit
informed opinion as to whether an preemptive entry in the languages
section of the release notes could help ward off some support requests
and to give the people doing the support a place to point concerned
people to.

When the same conditions are met for other languages, we release them
as well. So we're not dropping anything. We're merely releasing the
translations that are done now rather than waiting longer for the ones
that are still in progress.

We did the exact same thing before with AOO 3.4.1.

My personal feeling is that it would be good since it would give us a place
to direct user with support questions to for a definitive statement, but I
also recognize how controversial this topic can be.

I added a statement to the release notes explaining that more
translations are coming and telling how interested parties can
volunteer to help. Is that good enough?

Whether it is good enough is not for me to decide but it does accomplish
the intent of the initial question.

yes, I have, on the latest version of open office using windows 7 and
that is how I got the error code 42 extraction failed. I am running the
latest version of java to interact with the java access bridge so JAWS

I do not know what should be "weird error".

In addition, you are rude and uncooperative. No "thank you", no evidence of

An update on this crash. I was eventually able to reproduce it on
Windows 8, 64-bit. This was an initial install, not an upgrade.
Samer saw it on an upgrade install.

I worked on the stack trace with Herbert (fortunately my Windows 8
machine had a debugger installed). Herbert gave me a patch to test.
It appears to work on my machine. We're waiting to hear back from
Samer on whether it worked for him.

I realize this would be a Royal Pain of the First Order, but I wonder
if this defect is worth respinning the RC?

We see similar things with emails to the private and press mailing
lists. We get a support question sent to these lists every few days.
It is reasonable to believe that we have a similar fraction of wiki
users who just don't read the instructions.

However, in this case, I'm still waiting for the first real case of
someone using the form for its intended purpose. Until that happens I
can't really calculate its success rate ;-)

It is essential a problem of scale. It is hard to give individual
attention to 50 million users. So we need to concentrate on self-help
via FAQ's, etc., and then direct users towards the best tools for
interactive help, e.g., the forums. Anything that is confusing to
users, even at the 1% level, will lead to a flood of emails.

In my club membership data base, I can use "Filter by Selection" to isolate a
group of members that I want to send an E-mail to and, if I click on the
"E-mail Address" field label, the entire column is highlighted but when I click
on "Copy" and then try to "Paste" the block of E-mail Addresses in the Bcc
field of on E-mail, I only get one E-mail address! I need to be able to copy
the entire block of E-mail Addresses.

Negative press? Do you have a link?

Remember, we didn't drop anything. For example, we had released no
translation of French 4.0 last week, because 4.0 was not done. Now
that 4.0 is done and the translation is done, we can release both.
Does that mean we dropped French last week? No it just means it was
not ready to release yet.

When the same conditions are met for other languages, we release them
as well. So we're not dropping anything. We're merely releasing the
translations that are done now rather than waiting longer for the ones
that are still in progress.

We did the exact same thing before with AOO 3.4.1.

I added a statement to the release notes explaining that more
translations are coming and telling how interested parties can
volunteer to help. Is that good enough?

   Hi,

the upload is finished already. We agreed on a structure to separate
the
binaries from the src release and make the binaries available in a
special directory for Sourceforge.

There is a 4.0.0 "staged" folder set up which is good (
https://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/**
**files/4.0.0/

)

But
the only files uploaded are some "de" binaries have been uploaded at
https://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/
files/4.0.0/binaries/de/https://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/4.0.0/binaries/de/>

Those are ok, but there are no other files uploaded to SF yet for 4.0.

I've created them for testing purpose only.

Is anyone working on uploading all the reaming files?

I would expect that there is an automatism to grep the files from the
Apache Dist folder(s). Was this not the way how it was done for 3.4.x?

Ok, if we need to do that I need to know where can we rsync copy files
from. Please communicate is ASAP because updating mirrors takes a lot.

I ask that because the old location doesn't have 4.x
(rsync.apache.org::apache-**dist/incubator/ooo/files/)
and we can't rsync files from there.

a bit lower in this mail thread Juergen stated this:

rsync Url: rsync.apache.org::apache-dist-external

We get this error:
$ rsync rsync.apache.org::apache-dist-external .
@ERROR: chroot failed
rsync error: error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at
/SourceCache/rsync/rsync-42/rsync/main.c(1398) [receiver=2.6.9]

If it's not a temporary problem, you can try to assemble the right URL
from the content of this, maybe it's working:

http://people.apache.org/~jsc/aoo40_dist_files.txt
http://people.apache.org/~jsc/aoo40_external_dist_files.txt

PS:
I don't know how much you are doing with rsync, so maybe this will help
also:

http://www.2rosenthals.net/wordpress/rsync-error-5-may-be-exactly-what-it-says-165/

Otherwise Juergen should help out.

Sorry for the delay.

Marcus

I can imagine that this is the way to go. However, Juergen as Release
Manager should have the last word.

Marcus

My personal feeling is that it would be good since it would give us a

  Hi,

the upload is finished already. We agreed on a structure to separate the
binaries from the src release and make the binaries available in a
special directory for Sourceforge.

There is a 4.0.0 "staged" folder set up which is good (
https://sourceforge.net/**projects/openofficeorg.mirror/**files/4.0.0/)
   But
the only files uploaded are some "de" binaries have been uploaded at
https://sourceforge.net/**projects/openofficeorg.mirror/**
files/4.0.0/binaries/de/
Those are ok, but there are no other files uploaded to SF yet for 4.0.

I've created them for testing purpose only.

Is anyone working on uploading all the reaming files?

I would expect that there is an automatism to grep the files from the
Apache Dist folder(s). Was this not the way how it was done for 3.4.x?

Ok, if we need to do that I need to know where can we rsync copy files
from. Please communicate is ASAP because updating mirrors takes a lot.

I ask that because the old location doesn't have 4.x
(rsync.apache.org::apache-dist/incubator/ooo/files/)
and we can't rsync files from there.

a bit lower in this mail thread Juergen stated this:

rsync Url: rsync.apache.org::apache-dist-**external

I can imagine that this is the way to go. However, Juergen as Release
Manager should have the last word.

My takeaway was there were concerns with having uncontrolled changes
to the Release Notes. But if we like the wiki as a technology there
are ways of handling this. For example, we could link to a specific
revision of the wiki page from the download page. That allows us to
be constant by default, but preserves flexibility to update it later
if needed.

It is possible. However I don't like to have an exception for users of
platform X. This would make the "index.html" more unreadable than it is
already.

Therefore I've created a general text and link to the release notes (of
course, it's still intermediate):

http://ooo-site.staging.**apache.org/download/test/**index.html

1) Directly in the main green box.
2) In a second sub-green box.

Please have a look and tell what you think. IMHO 1) is better.

Marcus

1) is better.

I like 1 better, too. But it still looks too prominent. We don't want to
scare our users (when only a minority will run into this problem). Maybe
an explanation in the release notes is enough.

I've decreased the font size a bit. And remember only 1) or 2) will
survive at the end. Currently it's duplicated which maybe supports the
too prominent look & feel.

Marcus

maybe change wording to "Click here for known installation issues"

I know this is going to the Release Notes page...but maybe we should
focus
on highlighting "installation".

I just edited Release Notes to duplicate the Mac OS X info in the
Upgrading/Installing section. Left it in Known Issues as well.

Great thanks.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to explain this at a more visible
place, like the download button for the Mac version. Does anybody know
if that is possible?

It is possible. However I don't like to have an exception for users of
platform X. This would make the "index.html" more unreadable than it is
already.

Therefore I've created a general text and link to the release notes (of
course, it's still intermediate):

http://ooo-site.staging.**apache.org/download/test/**index.html

1) Directly in the main green box.
2) In a second sub-green box.

Please have a look and tell what you think. IMHO 1) is better.

1) is better.

maybe change wording to "Click here for known installation issues"

Sure, the wording is always changeable.

I know this is going to the Release Notes page...but maybe we should focus
on highlighting "installation".

Actually I wanted to create a TOC for the release notes. However, it's
still locked by Herbert or Andre. Then we will have the headlines as
links and I can use the "Kniwn Issues" as jump label in the URL.

I just edited Release Notes to duplicate the Mac OS X info in the
Upgrading/Installing section. Left it in Known Issues as well.

That's good.

Marcus

dist/openoffice/4.0.0/source-> contains the src release +
signatures/checksum/hashes

dist/openoffoce/4.0.0/binaries  ->  contains the

the Apache dist folder and provide them from there as in the past.

dist/externaldist/openoffice/4.0.0/binaries  ->  contains all the

make conversion more difficult. But if someone really wants to do
that, then I have no objections.

I know this is going to the Release Notes page...but maybe we should focus

I just edited Release Notes to duplicate the Mac OS X info in the

Re: [RESULT][VOTE]: Release OpenOffice 4.0 (RC)

2013-07-15 Thread Jürgen Schmidt
Hi,

the upload is finished already. We agreed on a structure to separate the
binaries from the src release and make the binaries available in a
special directory for Sourceforge.

dist/openoffice/4.0.0/source-> contains the src release +
signatures/checksum/hashes

dist/openoffoce/4.0.0/binaries  -> contains the
signatures/checksum/hashes only. For security reasons we keep them on
the Apache dist folder and provide them from there as in the past.

dist/externaldist/openoffice/4.0.0/binaries  -> contains all the
binaries (SDK, full install, lang packs) + signatures/checkssum/hashes

A complete file list can be found under

http://people.apache.org/~jsc/aoo40_dist_files.txt
http://people.apache.org/~jsc/aoo40_external_dist_files.txt

rsync Url: rsync.apache.org::apache-dist-external

It's not just a bad display: it is exported to pdf

http://people.apache.org/~rgb-es/rotation.pdf

But I just see a weird behaviour: Reopening the document, rotation works
without problems on the fox picture, but if I copy the fox picture → paste
special as bitmap → get the empty box → rotation fails again on the
original picture.

Increasing the memory per object does not change this behaviour.

That the Bitmap is not inserted is likely a problem with the cache. Set
the value in Tools > Options > Memory to for example 12MB Memory per object.

The bad display of the rotated jpg-picture might be a moire effect.
Please zoom in and see, whether it remains. You might test to switch

Is this about selecting something in Writer and copying it to the

However, please *do not* go out and start announcing the release yet.
We need to coordinate a few final steps before this is done,
including:

1. Provisioning the files to the Apache and SourceForge distribution directories

2. Waiting for the files to replicate within the mirror network (as
much as 24 hours)

3. Verify download scripts against actual AOO 4.0 files.

4. Complete the release notes. Convert them to HTML. Give some time
for translations.

5. Prepare announcement emails and blog post and webpage.

The above should all be done before we announce. After we announce,
we have a few other items to do:

5. Update logos on social media sites

6. Enable update notification server

7. Follow up blog post +1 week.

I'd like to recommend that we aim for a noon UTC announcement on
Wednesday, if possible. That would mean that items 1-5 are complete
then. Release notes translations can roll in over time if needed.
But we should have the English Release Notes and the other items ready
to go.

When Juergen is allowed to upload the release until ~20:00 UTC today,
then the files can be distributed around the mirrors and I should be
able to update the DL websites tomorrow evening to be ready until
Wednesday noon UTC.

For the moment it looks like as it could be possible.

Does this make sense? Am I missing anything? Anyone think that Wed.

2013-07-15 Thread Samer Mansour
I logged my comments in the bug, I searched the db before I opened a new
bug sorry if its a duplicate.

It is windows 8 64-bit. Crashes on copy and cut. Paste seems to not be
affected.

The four steps Rob gave in the bug are the minimum required steps to
reproduce.

There was some discussion of this on another thread. Someone reported
a clipboard crash on Windows 8 with an earlier snapshot (not the RC)
but was not able to reproduce it. I tried yesterday on a clean
Windows 8 install and could not get a crash, copying, pasting, etc.,
content.

But you are saying it is "cut" not copy. I can try that.

Also, are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8?

I do not know why, because the macro is for all operating systems under which
OO runs suitable (e.g. Windows, Linux, MacOS).

Possible show stopper on Windows 8, please verify

2013-07-15 Thread Samer Mansour
I just got my testlink set up, and received a couple test cases 7 hours ago.

The first test I went to do I couldn't complete because it caused what I
think is a show stopper for windows 8 (if its reproducible)

Can anyone copy or cut contents to their system clipboard in windows 8
using the 4.0.0 RC snapshot? It causes an immediate crash every time for
me.

Here is the bug I opened,

Sidebar meta issue is closed

2013-07-15 Thread Andre Fischer

Hi,

the development of the sidebar is finished and the vote for our release
is over. Therefore I have closed the sidebar meta issue: bug 121420 now
has status resolved/fixed.

I would like to thank everybody who has helped to make this happen. A
lot of people have contributed including, but not limited to, UX design,
programming, testing, translation, documentation and discussion
(providing new ideas).

I think that we did a great job.

They wanted to be informed that is at least what I learned from earlier
releases. And yes I believe it is the amount of 22 GB. I informed infra
on Friday that we are planning a release and that the vote will be

 Hi all,

this is a call for vote on releasing the following release candidate as
Apache OpenOffice 4.0. This will be an important release for Apache
OpenOffice with bigger visible UI changes. It is a key milestone to
 continue the success of OpenOffice.

This release candidate provides the following important changes compared
 to former OpenOffice releases:

 (1) a major UI change/improvement by introducing a new sidebar concept
where the idea is the comes from IBM's Symphony. It's the combination of
reimplementing a complete new framework for sidebars and merging the
existing sidebar in impress and code of various content panels from the
 Symphony grant in OpenOffice.

 (2) 190 fixes from Symphony are merged and integrated, mainly
 interoperability issues

 (3) 600 defects are fixed

 (4) many more features and improvements are integrated

For a detailed feature overview please see the release notes under
 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.0+Release+Notes.
But keep in mind that the release notes are not yet final and will be
 updated and polished ...

UTC at noon on Monday, 15 July: 2013-07-15 12:00 UTC.

Coordination on AOO 4.0 Release Announcement

2013-07-15 Thread Rob Weir
As Juergen pointed out, the AOO 4.0 release vote has successfully
completed. The release is approved.

But we should have the English Release Notes and the other items ready
to go.

Does this make sense? Am I missing anything? Anyone think that Wed.
is not possible? It is better not to make an important announcement
at the end of the week (Thursday or Friday) since that tends to mute
the press coverage.

We should use the Release Dashboard to coordinate the status of these items:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/4.0+Release+Dashboard

+1 for releasing this RC as AOO 4.0

I have made many tests on my own, including a complete build of the src
release under MacOS and verifying the signature etc.

We can always do better and can fix more bugs but the overall situation
will not change. It will be always the same.

Please continue to verify translations and improve it, it's not wasted
time. These improvements will go in the next release. The same for the
new file type and application icons. We should continue the good work
and should integrate it asap on trunk.

No release blocking issues found according to my testing in Windows 7.
Feel a little pity that 2 of my opened defects not fixed in 4.0. But I
believe it is more important to deliver 4.0 with so many valuable features
ASAP. And we can keep continuous delivery to have more enhancement step by
step after 4.0.
So:

+1 Release this package as Apache OpenOffice 4.0

OK, that was not very clear :-)

The bug *fix* is in the release and therefore the bug is not.

Mac release

2013-07-15 Thread Andre Fischer

Hi,

Issue 122732 [1]reminded me of the problem on Mac where the system
complains that the AOO installation packaged does not come from the
Apple app store. As Ariel pointed out, this is covered in the release
notes for AOO 3.4.0 and 3.4.1.

I am not sure that that many users would find the note in the release
notes, follow the link to the solution and fix it.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to explain this at a more visible
place, like the download button for the Mac version. Does anybody know
if that is possible?

for AOO 4.1.

Currently the Windows buildbot of the SNAPSHOT tag does a weekly full
build of all languages:

  http://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/#winsnap
Is any fully translated language missing from that list? Should
semi-translated languages be built too?

Yes, we should build all languages on all other platforms too. But we
don't have a Mac buildbot yet and until the build baseline is increased
to XCode4 that will probably have to stay so. On the Linux64 things look
much better but disk space on that buildbot used to be a problem. The
Linux32 buildbot needs to be set up, but from a localization perspective
its build result it is indistinguishable from the Linux64 build.

Also FreeBSD buildbot would be possible, but AFAIK Maho is working on a
tinderbox build there, so setting up a buildbot would probably be wasted
work. Also getting buildbots for OS/2 or Solaris X86 or Sparc just for
the localized snapshot builds is probably wasted work unless there is a
number of translators that only test on these platforms.
