Since you mentioned there was a redesign going on those are my
comments to prevent a huge ammount of whitespace being generated.

Something usually done for FAQ here is an example:

This way the column will be able to display more information as needed

Another suggestion is to embrace new design paradigms such as landing

show.

The GIT manual shows an example of it:
http://rogerdudler.github.io/git-guide/

Since more people are on tablets and mobiles, this allow to view the
information secuentially within one column.

There are CSS frameworks like LESS or SASS that allow you to use a
more responsive use of stylesheets and detect whenever is on a tablet
or a traditional laptop.

I can make some commits to the page and show what can be done with these.

I can certainly understand your comments. We would certainly welcome
design changes. Please continue to use the "test" area for this, or
create a new subarea under "test".

For now, I was just trying to bring more emphasis to the "free" nature
of our software so no big redesign was in mind. It's likely the rest of
the links on the page won't work because they're relative to the home page.

Please keep in mind we don't use PHP though -- just html, javascript and
css.

Right now, the WHY page seems to me the most straightforward way to get
the right information to folks. I'll work on a better "teaser" for it
from the home page today in a test area so we can take a look and evaluate.

OK, FYI -- take a look at home page mockup at:

http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/test/

I also added more details to the WHY page.

When we hone in on what we want to do about a revised FAQ, of course, we
should link to that.

I doubt they'll find on their own whatever page we put this info
in, but it would be a time saver just to be able to point them to
it next time.

2014-04-14 Thread Samer Mansour
I like https://www.openoffice.org/faq.html as the URL, its very clear, the
apache cms can serve this FAQ functionality.
I can review google analytics to see where the traffic to the faq.html is
currently coming from. Suggest /faq.html should be a link in the left nav
of https://www.openoffice.org/why/index.html

I think we (am I volunteering myself) should review the FAQ and confirm all
of it is still relevant / nothing changed / referring to OOo days
(licensing faq is referring to LGPL :S)
After that is all fixed up and reviewed (maybe dev list can help us as
extra eyes) we should should then link from /why/index.html.

I can help with formatting and organization of the information (page flow).
Also adding dates to the top left of the pages so public audiences can see
when it was last reviewed.

This might be the difference between OOo 3.3 and the AOO 4 you built
yourself: OOo 3.3 was compiled with Sun Studio 12 / C++-5.9 according to
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Compiler_versions_used_by_port_maintainers_and_release_engineers
Studio 12.3 comes with C++ 5.12 according to
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24457_01/html/E21991/bkabe.html#scrolltoc
The compiler might have changed in a way that broke the bridge.

Hello Pedro,

What Alexandro was telling about is the tool "Proofing Tool GUI".

I have released a V3.0 beta the other week which is now ultra-fast

  code with more complex one.

You can find the tool here:

I have been using it for en_GB both for Mozilla and Apache

The trend is clear and the official counter (which includes the language

ApacheCon, so I suggest that we go directly for the "100 millions" logo
for
ApacheCon in any case.

Is the official template for slides already available? Speakers in the
OpenOffice track could use a slightly modified template with the "100
millions" OpenOffice logo in that case.

Of course we still need someone who can design the "100 millions" logo
variant of the official OpenOffice 4 logo!

I dont think there is anything wrong by just doing a direct inquiry
and response. Most people might not take the time to review the site
and try to get in touch as soon as possible. Is cultural, I know. It
goes with "I want a human on the other side of the (phone) line".

2014-04-14 Thread Alexandro Colorado
Hi Pedro, Marco Pinto has been contributing to the project for some
time, he has his own tool for spellchecking and also has update the
english package for the dictionaries. I think is a good first step
since he already know the ropes of the project.

If you need more information regarding the process of contribution I
suggest to read "the apache way" and also some of the introductory
modules. Located here:

OpenOffice Weekly News

2014-04-14 Thread Rob Weir
In another thread I pointed to an interesting thing the CouchDb
project was doing on their blog:

https://blogs.apache.org/couchdb/entry/couchdb_weekly_news_april_3

I suggested doing something similar for AOO, perhaps by collecting
stories on the wiki and then copying into a blog post at regular
intervals. The feedback was good, so let's give it a try!

The template, with a little content to get started is on the wiki here:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=40508638

As you come across interesting content, from within the community, the
forums, in the press, blogs, wherever, feel free to add it to the
wiki. When April 21st comes, I (or someone else if they want) will
copy it into the blog, do some light editing, publish and then reset
the wiki so we can start again for the next issue.

Thanks!

Egad. You mean, we *don't* have that sort of language already? I figured we'd
retained that and other clarifications from OOo days' FAQ, not all of which
related to Sun/Oracle or the licenses used. (I helped write or edit most of the
faq and maintained them). The faq are still there, in svn, last I checked.

But anyway, we used to have language stating what you just put. It worked—for
those who read it and got it.

This may be a product of our localized sites not existing / being

Actually, we've had a few of these in the last month or so, variations
on "May I use OpenOffice commercially", "May I pre-install OpenOffice
on hardware that I'm distributing", and "I'm a central buying
authority and I have paperwork to fill out on all the software my
customer uses". We're dealing in these cases with bureaucrats, not
familiar with open source software. If there is not a box in their
form for open source they might not know what to do.

I doubt they'll find on their own whatever page we put this info in,
but it would be a time saver just to be able to point them to it next
time.

Anyone available that understands the OpenOffice bridges or could point me to
the correct documentation so that I can begin to understand the problem myself?
This has been a road block for me.

Thanks!

I compiled the sdk example Addon ProtocolHandlerAddon_cpp and attempted to
install the generated OXT. Here is the stack trace of the crash. It seems to
get past the cpp_vtable_call, but the problem still seems to be related to the
bridge?

-1. A link to FAQ might do the trick. But how many queries of this sort
(clueless) do we actually get? Not that many, yes? I would rather we keep our
website as clean and direct as possible, and invite people to contribute, yes,
and to distribute, but given *why* people come to the site, the simpler the
better. Analogues: Mozilla, for one but one could also point to other open

Being obvious, stating the repeated—then stating it again—is no proof

At least, that was my experience long long ago.

Maybe it would help to include an additional question on the
"I want to learn more about OpenOffice" topic on the home page of the
website -- "What is the cost for licenses?"

or something similar

Very celebratory! :) Nice!

The current logo is 268px × 100px

I think we have flexibility to use more length. There is plenty of

But I'm not sure how the page will accommodate a taller graphic.

We need to stay as close to 100px height maximum to accommodate the
styling for the main "banner" line.

So I wonder whether we need two versions:

1) a 100px tall by 300-500px wide doodle for the website

2) a "sharable" graphic with a more normal aspect ratio version for

ApacheCon, so I suggest that we go directly for the "100 millions" logo

ApacheCon in any case.

Is the official template for slides already available? Speakers in the
OpenOffice track could use a slightly modified template with the "100
millions" OpenOffice logo in that case.

Of course we still need someone who can design the "100 millions" logo
variant of the official OpenOffice 4 logo!

When I see we hit 1,000,000 I can resize, position and update our social

It is 100.000.000 million downloads - two zeros more.

The trend is clear and the official counter (which includes the language
packs) is already over 100 millions. There is still a month before
ApacheCon, so I suggest that we go directly for the "100 millions" logo for
ApacheCon in any case.

Is the official template for slides already available? Speakers in the
OpenOffice track could use a slightly modified template with the "100
millions" OpenOffice logo in that case.

Of course we still need someone who can design the "100 millions" logo
variant of the official OpenOffice 4 logo!

   Andrea.

Odd, I thought this was pretty obvious:
https://www.openoffice.org/why/why_sme.html Its only 2 clicks into the
site.
I want to learn more -> Businesses, third bullet down.

This may be a product of our localized sites not existing / being updated.
This person was inquiring for a Malaysian business, not sure if the person
inquiring was also from Malaysia.

Re: Cannot install AOO4.1RC3 English language pack

2014-04-14 Thread Oliver-Rainer Wittmann

Hi,

On 14.04.2014 13:16, Regina Henschel wrote:

Hi all,

I just installed AOORC3. Installation of the German full installation

It is not listed in Windows 7.

But I have got AOOBeta with language pack. Those are listed in Windows
7. And my old version AOO4.0.1 has both English and German too. I had
not deinstalled the old version but installed AOO4.1RC3 into the same
folder as AOO4.0.1 with unchecked option "remove all old versions". The
program folder had been successfully renamed to program_old.

I can confirm Regina's observation:
- Windows 7 in a VM with AOO 4.0.1 en-US + de languague pack
--> AOO 4.1.0 rc3 en-US installed, but AOO 4.1.0 rc3 language pack de
(or es) can not be installed.

The same upgrade works fine for AOO 4.0.0 en-US + de to AOO 4.0.1 en-US + de
- Windows 7 in a VM without any AOO installation
--> AOO 4.1.0 rc3 en-US installed, but AOO 4.1.0 rc3 language pack de
can not be installed.

It looks like as if the language pack conflicts with the full
installation package on Windows.

Best regards, Oliver.

Kind regards
Regina

2014-04-14 Thread Rob Weir
Hello Rahul,

I apologize for the delayed response. The "marketing-subscribe" address
you sent to is only used for mailing list management functions. No human
monitors that address.

Apache OpenOffice is open source software published by the Apache Software
Foundation. We are a non-profit public charity. We do not sell software,
maintenance or support. But we do publish OpenOffice for anyone to
download, use and redistribute, without charge, according to terms the
Apache License 2.0, which you can find here:

If your customer requires commercial support then I would refer you to the
following page, which lists a number of companies that provide services for
OpenOffice:

http://www.openoffice.org/bizdev/consultants.html

I think that takes care of all your pricing questions.

You also had some questions related to language and operating systems. You
can see our system requirements here:

http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_aoo41.html

A list of supported languages is here:

http://www.openoffice.org/download/other.html#aoo

In addition to those languages, our next version, OpenOffice 4.1, which we
plan to release in the next week, will support: Bulgarian, Hebrew, Danish,
Hindi, Kazakh, Norwegian Bokmål and Thai.

Cannot install AOO4.1RC3 English language pack

2014-04-14 Thread Regina Henschel

Hi all,

I just installed AOORC3. Installation of the German full installation
set works. But I cannot install the en-US language pack. It tells me,
that the language pack is already installed, but that is not the case.

Kind regards

[RELEASE]: RC3 available

2014-04-14 Thread Jürgen Schmidt
Hi,

the RC3 build (rev. 1586584) is uploading and most of the files are
already available. Only 32 bit language packs for Linux are currently
missing.

I plan to start a vote later today but would like to invite everybody to
test the new build already ...
