If you start to type something into your browser's address bar, you will want to open web page. So all a browser has to do is search all possible sources of URLs (history, bookmarks, online repos etc.) to make predictions. What do we expect a user to enter into an OOo search bar? Help content? File names? In what folders? Document content? Web searches? UI commands in the menu? etc. etc. So while a multi search tool would be a nice idea, we have to solve the possible ambiguities. Since I use OpenOffice.org for documents, it was my idea to seach in the file names, that are already presented in the hyperlink toolbar. If not, there at least needs to be a Toplevel-Category Using OpenOfffice.org (as opposed to the Development-Categories). Sure - was forgotten that one .. Few remarks: - currently, Documentation is both main category and sub category of Project. Yes, this is intentionally. Every subcategory of Project should be something represented by real people. These are the owners of the pages in their category and in their subcategories. Documentation being on the toplevel of the MainIndex is because: - Most of the Wiki _is_ Documentation - They have a decent organization of subcategories That is what I understand and see reflected now on the category page. - currently Performance is both under Development and Project. Intentionally, because it is an Office-wide Development Effort and not limited to some modules. Same for API, Porting, ESC. OK, if that does work. - API, Extensions should be under Development with OpenOffice.org Separating Development of and Development with sounds like a sensible thing. However, we should really get rid of Development then, as covers way to many topics (pretty much everything not-Marketing and not-Enduser). Then you must think of some new main categories? - ODFToolkit maybe as main category (after all it is http://odftoolkit.org/ as very main ;-) ) True. I found this: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Category:SOP sorting out categories and it is seems really useful. A few points from those: - One should never create or modify a page so that it does not belong to a project. If one wants to not yet show a page in the Project Category one should use a subcategory for those. (for example: Category:Quality Assurance/Draft) Exceptions are the User:-Pages and their subpages which can be used as Sandboxes. - The Developemnt and Wiki categories and their subcategories are supplemental as they do not attribute ownership to a project. - new Categories should always be a subcategory of an existing category (and thus end up somewhere on the MainIndex) - All projects should take a look at their subcategories and clean up if needed. NLC should consolidate on a naming scheme for subcategories (languages). - Category pages should never redirect as it is really a maintenance hassle. If the Category has a frontpage just link to it from the category page. - Never black a page. Use {{delete}} instead. (I will mark the ca. 50 blank pages we have in the wiki for deletion soon). Great. To serve that, we are best helped with a clear structure, of which it is obvious right away how it works. Therefore my enthusiasm for your work on this. Hi Per, IMO this is a great and valuable job. A very big + from my side :-) Cor Per Eriksson wrote (15-7-2009 11:09) Hello, I am cross-posting this to dev and documentation, but think that best would be if discussions run on dev, as many of the details probably will be discussed there. As a part of the Simplifying entry for new developers [1] effort I have the idea of collecting all the wiki pages about building the software into a building guide, as the developer guide [2]. I have discussed with several people about including it into the developer guide, but the answer was always that the developer guide would get too big. I therefore see building as an own process or part. Having a building guide would simplify and make it easier for new developers to find articles and getting to the right pages faster by providing the navigation as in the developer guide. This work would be done by sorting, consolidating and editing the various wiki pages into a guide with a structure. In this work various negative comments about building OpenOffice.org being impossible in the articles will be replaced by constructive tips for the developer. If you think this is a good idea, I will start a new small effort for this in the wiki. Hmm, I always thought it is in the interest of every community member that the project flourishes, is well guided. If Novell wants more influence, there may be good reasons for it. If things for OpenOffice.org continue to evolve like they do the last years, it might be very good for the project, that there comes a change in leadership. But I am not in a position to judge. And only reading 'arguments' in favour of changes, won't help me nor anyone else. Even more so, because the arguments I saw, often were build upon suspension, nitpicking, turning around. Use Open Office all day, and have found a bug, but find your bug reporting system too complicated. I spent over an hour trying to work out how to report, but gave up. Sorry that it took so much of your time. *I would suggest that if you want people who use the applications in all sorts of different ways, i.e. the more general office users, not just the tecchies, to feedback problems, there should be a 'junior' level of reporting, that then more tecchy people could check out and then do official bug report. * Currently, already a serious part of reported bugs, turn out not to be bugs... This is very time-consuming, since all have to be evaluated, answered, handled etc. So making this more easy, is IMO not a good solution. In general it works best if people ask in a mail to or on the forum http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/ There are experienced people who can explain the features, work a rounds, ..., and if necessary help with filing correct issues. Lots of small businesses and consultants don't have an in-house IT person, who could find manage to do report in specified way. [My bug is that when creating labels on a mailmerge, the 'suppress blank lines' doesn't work on printing, despite this being selected. This hasn't been corrected on later editions, so I guess nobody else who has spotted it has managed to report it]. I suggest you ask it in one of the ways mentioned above. Hope you don't mind me emailing you directly, but didn't know what else to do. It's OK. I hope you find your way better now. Hi Eike, Bernd, *, Eike Rathke wrote (14-11-2007 12:07) On Wednesday, 2007-11-14 10:06:21 +0100, Bernd Eilers wrote: What I consider bad on using this fallback is the problem that the feature-info is often to technical to be used for the release notes, eg. it´s often mentioning stuff like ChildWorkspaces where something got integrated etc. which the end user doesn´t know about what this is but well that may be only my impression. That's a matter of education then. Developers should get acquainted with the idea that feature announcements should be written such that they're end user compatible ;-) We could also agree on something like tagged sections, such as a [technical] blah here [/technical] would not be included in a compilation of feature announcements. Using square brackets instead of angle brackets would prevent confusion with HTML tags if the text is to be included in some HTML page like a wiki or such. The EIS form could actively support that by offering two textareas, one description for users, one technical. For general users and marketing, easy understandable wording is important. But for people preparing the end-user-Wiki (for that purpose) more technical info can be useful. Also, it's not the job or competence of a developer to write end user compatible, is it? Would be a pity if that took a lot of effort. Full information for those testing and writing the end-user-Wiki (without any features missing) would be sufficient, IMO. Unless of course, a situation can be achieved where the system and procedures can expected to produce info that: - always has all features; - is well understandable for end users; - directly exports to the feature announcements-page. In that case, extra effort for the end-user-Wiki as it is now, would be useless :-) Regards, Cor -- Cor Nouws Arnhem - Netherlands nl.OpenOffice.org - marketing contact - To unsubscribe, e-mail: For additional commands, e-mail:

Re: [dev] automatic release notes
Frank Schönheit - Sun Microsystems Germany wrote (11-11-2007 22:14) While we are at it ... Somebody should look at those notes *before* they're published. It's nice to have automatisms, but as with other automatisms, there's a need for manual post-work. In this case, IMO it's a strong need. In the current form, which a) has a unfriendly layout b) contains semantic, grammatical and orthographic errors c) contains duplicates, it is a little bit of a shame, given that usually, we expect this to be a very early reading for a lot of people, once a new version is out. Could this meet 'your' needs, Frank http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/New_Features_2.3#Full_list If so, the release notes-page is useful for those needing/wanting more technical data, and the wiki for users. Who is in charge of this page? The volunteer :-) Inspired by the good work done by Sophie in the past, and the fact that we want such a page in Dutch as well, I picked it up. My idea is to document the steps, somewhere on the wiki, and make that known on at the least, so that others can join or just step in, when I come in trouble with available time... It is therefore that I jump in every time, when there is a discussion that might lead to a more reliable automatic collection of issues ;-) BTW: at some stage after release of 2.3.0 it was linked from the projects main page. But maybe I'm being too optimistic. Well, since we try to make every neat new feature known, it just is a pity that it takes so much time to collect the last 10 %. Just to be clear, nothing gets me more excited than knowing that a feature I work to create is being marketed. So, I would be the last person to hide his own features. I even have by own blog for that. So, if you point me to your own compilation of new features, and I don't see my feature included there, I would even complain loudly hey you forgot my feature. ;-) Think I'm going to test that ;-) Thanks for the discussion, Kohei.
