I think that we are different to a browser. If you start to type
something into your browser's address bar, you will want to open web
page. So all a browser has to do is search all possible sources of URLs
(history, bookmarks, online repos etc.) to make predictions.

What do we expect a user to enter into an OOo search bar? Help content?
File names? In what folders? Document content? Web searches? UI commands
in the menu? etc. etc.

So while a multi search tool would be a nice idea, we have to solve the
possible ambiguities.

Since I use OpenOffice.org for documents, it was my idea to seach in the
file names, that are already presented in the hyperlink toolbar.
Therefore I wrote: I.e., when I type tool all files with tool in the
full name are presented. Which is far more convenient than the current use.

Apart from that, and seeing the very few concerns reg. his qualities in
the discussion, it looks OK to 'give Thorsten the benefit of the doubt',

The discussion I have read on these lists, is also in valuable in the

That can help us to feel confident, that the desired broader

On the contrary, picking I look forward to pick up our normal work in

Let me take this opportunity to express some thoughts and feelings to

Some words of thanks are in its place, in my opinion, although

Further, I feel thankful for you all continuing the work in the long

glad that now this period is closed, finished.

People knowing me, will recognize that I'm not shy to raise my voice

I am really exited about OpenOffice.org being part of Oracle and trust
that this new situation will give the project great opportunities.

That all in the project may enjoy.

Taking profit from your discussion with Juergen, I would suggest as
main categories:
- Development of OpenOffice.org
- Development with OpenOffice.org
- Marketing
- NLC
- Project
- Wiki

Sounds good, but I think Documentation deserves a spot there too, as
most stuff on the Wiki is Documentation. If not, there at least needs
to be a Toplevel-Category Using OpenOfffice.org (as opposed to the
Development-Categories).

Sure - was forgotten that one ..

Few remarks:
- currently, Documentation is both main category and sub category of
Project.

Yes, this is intentionally. Every subcategory of Project should be
something represented by real people. These are the owners of the pages
in their category and in their subcategories.
Documentation being on the toplevel of the MainIndex is because:
- Most of the Wiki _is_ Documentation
- They have a decent organization of subcategories

That is what I understand and see reflected now on the category page.

- currently Performance is both under Development and Project.

Intentionally, because it is an Office-wide Development Effort and not
limited to some modules. Same for API, Porting, ESC.

OK, if that does work.

- API, Extensions should be under Development with OpenOffice.org

Separating Development of and Development with sounds like a
sensible thing. However, we should really get rid of Development
then, as covers way to many topics (pretty much everything
not-Marketing and not-Enduser).

Then you must think of some new main categories?

- ODFToolkit maybe as main category (after all it is
http://odftoolkit.org/ as very main ;-) )

True.

I found this:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Category:SOP
sorting out categories and it is seems really useful.

A few points from those:
- One should never create or modify a page so that it does not belong to
a project. If one wants to not yet show a page in the Project
Category one should use a subcategory for those.
  (for example: Category:Quality Assurance/Draft)
Exceptions are the User:-Pages and their subpages which can be used as
  Sandboxes.
- The Developemnt and Wiki categories and their subcategories are
supplemental as they do not attribute ownership to a project.
- new Categories should always be a subcategory of an existing category
(and thus end up somewhere on the MainIndex)
- All projects should take a look at their subcategories and clean up
if needed. NLC should consolidate on a naming scheme for
  subcategories (languages).
- Category pages should never redirect as it is really a maintenance
hassle. If the Category has a frontpage just link to it from the
  category page.
- Never black a page. Use {{delete}} instead. (I will mark the ca. 50
blank pages we have in the wiki for deletion soon).

Great. To serve that, we are best helped with a clear structure, of
which it is obvious right away how it works.

Therefore my enthusiasm for your work on this.

This:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Special:UncategorizedCategories
looks good.
This:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/w/index.php?title=Special:WantedCategorieslimit=100
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Special:UncategorizedPages
not so much.

Indeed. (I see there is also something to learn and do for the people
of the CC, working on the wiki ;-) )

mmh, i am not 100% sure if we should distinguish between developing for
or with OOo. We can of course provide a special section that addresses
mainly the programming from outside (means macros and extensions) but in
general i would not differentiate from the beginning. Many things are
the same.

As long as it is easy to follow for people working with extensions and
macro's, it's fine to me.

From an API perspective it's the same. Our API should be and is used
internally as well. Keep in mind one and the same API everyhwere.

That currently the API is put on top of a longer existing implementation
is just an implementation detail ;-) Building functional blocks and
combine them via clear defined interfaces ... Ok i know it is a little
bit philosophic but that was and i hope still is the main idea behind
UNO and the component technology.

With ongoing modularization this becomes hopefully even more obvious.

as long as we have this project view it's fine, it provides just a
further way to this categories. But see my comments above ...

Hello,

I am cross-posting this to dev and documentation, but think that best
would be if discussions run on dev, as many of the details probably will
be discussed there.

As a part of the Simplifying entry for new developers [1] effort I have
the idea of collecting all the wiki pages about building the software
into a building guide, as the developer guide [2]. I have discussed with
several people about including it into the developer guide, but the
answer was always that the developer guide would get too big. I
therefore see building as an own process or part.

Having a building guide would simplify and make it easier for new
developers to find articles and getting to the right pages faster by
providing the navigation as in the developer guide.

This work would be done by sorting, consolidating and editing the
various wiki pages into a guide with a structure.

In this work various negative comments about building OpenOffice.org
being impossible in the articles will be replaced by constructive tips
for the developer.

If you think this is a good idea, I will start a new small effort for
this in the wiki.

As VCL can handle the PaperBin explicitly I think that this is just an

My Feedback + +
Also good the way the preparation of the meetings is set up.

Few remarks:
- Reading the wiki, I understand that there will be separate meetings

- Why is the result of the priorization send out to dev@openoffice.org ?
Sort of just to inform? Or should it be send out to
dev@project.openoffice.org

- The outcome of each review meeting will be available on the wiki, as
separate page or as part of existing pages with planning?

- since the meetings are every quarter, and (mid/long) term planning
influences a longer time span, it will be necessary to think about
already set priorities, when preparing the lists for the new meetings.

Hmm, I always thought it is in the interest of every community member

If Novell wants more influence, there may be good reasons for it.
If things for OpenOffice.org continue to evolve like they do the last
years, it might be very good for the project, that there comes a change
in leadership.
But I am not in a position to judge. And only reading 'arguments' in
favour of changes, won't help me nor anyone else. Even more so, because
the arguments I saw, often were build upon suspension, nitpicking,
turning around.
Changes, I expect, are most likely to grow on a sort of trust and

Sorry that it took so much of your time.

*I would suggest that if you want people who use the applications in all
sorts of different ways, i.e. the more general office users, not just
the tecchies, to feedback problems, there should be a 'junior' level of

official bug report. *

Currently, already a serious part of reported bugs, turn out not to be
bugs... This is very time-consuming, since all have to be evaluated,
answered, handled etc.

So making this more easy, is IMO not a good solution.
In general it works best if people ask in a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There are experienced people who can explain the features, work a
rounds, ..., and if necessary help with filing correct issues.

Lots of small businesses and consultants don't have an in-house IT

[My bug is that when creating labels on a mailmerge, the 'suppress blank
lines' doesn't work on printing, despite this being selected. This
hasn't been corrected on later editions, so I guess nobody else who has
spotted it has managed to report it].

I suggest you ask it in one of the ways mentioned above.

Hope you don't mind me emailing you directly, but didn't know what else

well that may be only my impression.

That's a matter of education then. Developers should get acquainted with
the idea that feature announcements should be written such that they're
end user compatible ;-)

We could also agree on something like tagged sections, such as a
[technical]
blah here
[/technical]
would not be included in a compilation of feature announcements. Using
square brackets instead of angle brackets would prevent confusion with
HTML tags if the text is to be included in some HTML page like a wiki or
such. The EIS form could actively support that by offering two
textareas, one description for users, one technical.

For general users and marketing, easy understandable wording is important.
But for people preparing the end-user-Wiki (for that purpose) more
technical info can be useful.
Also, it's not the job or competence of a developer to write end user
compatible, is it? Would be a pity if that took a lot of effort.

Full information for those testing and writing the end-user-Wiki
(without any features missing) would be sufficient, IMO.

Unless of course, a situation can be achieved where the system and
procedures can expected to produce info that:

- always has all features;
- is well understandable for end users;
- directly exports to the feature announcements-page.
In that case, extra effort for the end-user-Wiki as it is now, would be
useless :-)

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/New_Features_2.3#Full_list

Though some structured data/lists were available, it took more that a
day to only discover all features. Some simply had to be dug out
Issuetracker.

And one feature was discovered a month after the release of 2.3.0 :-)

I cannot judge about a specific issue leading to this thread, but the
more automated (= regular info) the better, IMO ;-)

to set a custom property :
ThisComponent.DocumentInfo.SetPropertyValue(aCustomProperty, a Custom Value)

This doesn't work in 2.2.1 version (I forgot to mention OpenOffice.org
version in my previous email). I tried this in StarBasic and in Java
before I sent my mail, but no success. Interesting thing is that no
exception is raised in Java.

The latter is indeed nasty.
SetPropertyValue only works if a property already exsists.
If not, you must use addProperty:

 If Not oDocSetInfo.hasPropertyByName(sName) Then
oDocInfo.addProperty (sName, 0, sValue)
 Else
ThisComponent.DocumentInfo.setPropertyValue( sName, sValue)
 End If

I can imagine that the tone Juergen started with, wasn't the most
tactical and that you didn't like it. It was probably coming from some
tension or frustration, he talks about in the rest of his friendly and
polite message ;-)

A pity that you didn't read it.
