[slim] Re: SB3 locking when wirelessly connected

same here Steve. When wireless the SB3 plays a few songs then freezes.
Unplugging it is the only thing you can do. My laptop has no problem
using this wireless network. When plugged via ethernet the SB3 does not
crash. I agree a replacement is probably needed.

2006-01-29 Thread Patrick Dixon

I don't know about debug flags, but you could check slimserver.log
(/tmp/slimserver.log on my installation), for a basic error message. I
found that you had to set SQL permissions for user
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' to get it to run properly.

AFAIK, slimserver runs with user 'slimserver' - the 'er' may be
trucated somewhere on your display.

[slim] Choppy play on Synched SB3 + 2x SB2s causes Synch delays/Unsynched

2006-01-29 Thread ajmitchell

Hi all,

I have sold 2 sb1s which were working perfectly with 2 sb2s. My
intention was to upgrade the sb1s to sb3s and gradually add more sb3s
but now I am not so sure. Here's my latest problem after adding one new
Sb3.

If I synch the 2 SBs and leave the Sb3 on its own everything is fine.

If I add the Sb3 to the synched Sb2s then play gets very choppy on the
audio (multiple stuttering and drop outs etc although it muddles
along!). This has the effect of slowing the track play time and the SB3
becomes unsyched finishing a typical 5min song 10 to 15 seconds late.
The main Sb2 (with no problems) waits in silence until the SB3 finished
before restarting the next track simultanously. However, within a few
seconds they have become unsyched again with choppy play largely on the
SB3.

The type of track seems to make no difference, neither does the coding
rate. For various reasons, I cannot use wired on the SB3 except as a
test. In fact, all the boxes are using wireless. All are getting signal
strength above 40%.

My main question is have people synched SB2 amd Sb3s on the same
wireless network without problems?

Setup: mp3's + WinXp + not as a service (slim.exe) + SlimServer
Version: 6.2.2 - 5886 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252 +netgear WGT624

[slim] Re: DHCP oddities...

2006-01-29 Thread Malor

Pfarrell, I don't think you read my original post correctly. That's
what I am already doing. You're describing my home network almost
exactly.

The problem is that there is a bug in the Squeezebox firmware. When it
makes a DHCP request with bridging enabled, it does so with the *wrong
MAC address*. And that MAC address was the same on both my units, so I
can't assign an address based on it. Plus, according to the guy who
originally spotted this bug, that wrong MAC address also changes
unpredictably, so even if it were just one Squeezebox, it would *still*
break.

MrC, I'll try the updated 6.2.2 later on, and will post back with
results.

[slim] Lame problem

2006-01-29 Thread Philip Meyer
This morning my SBG and SB2 were unresponsive - the time on the SB2 was static.
I went to the server machine and I could see that I had a Windows Data
Execution Prevention message for Lame. This must have been blocking the
SlimServer code in such a way that the squeezeboxes didn't report server
connection errors.

I killed this and tried streaming flac->mp3 to my SBG again, which instantly
caused the DEP message again.

Yesterday I changed my windows settings for DEP to "Turn on DEP for all
programs and services except those I select", and only had "windows.exe"
selected as a test to try to resolve another unrelated issue with my system. I
switched this back to the usual "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and
services only" and rebooted.

I still got DEP messages for Lame though. This was strange, as I have been
using Lame with SlimServer for well over a year without problems.

So I thought I'd reinstall Lame. I was previously using version Lame3.96Final.
I went to sourceforge and found there is a newer version (lame3.97b2), so I
installed that one (copied lame.exe and lame_enc.dll to C:\Windows). I noticed
that the file sizes for the new version were substantially smaller.

The problem has now gone away (although I did have a few stutters in playback
that I didn't used to get - but that might not be down to Lame).

What could have happened to Lame to suddenly cause the problem I've been seeing?

What is the best version of Lame to use with SlimServer? I read the following
(from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm):

There is a bug in LAME MP3 Encoder 3.96 Final version that can cause
skipping. We recommend you to download LAME MP3 Encoder 3.96.1 Stable or LAME
MP3 Encoder 3.97 beta

There is also a 3.98 alpha version.

[slim] Re: DHCP oddities...

2006-01-29 Thread Malor

Version 29 of the firmware is even worse. The players are both now
requesting DHCP addresses with the MAC address 00:00:00:00:00:10. So
they both get handed the same IP address by the server (I'm not sure
why this didn't happen before; perhaps they were slightly different and
I just didn't see it.) This renders the second Squeezebox
nonfunctional.

I see the bug is tagged for fixing in the 6.5 release... if 6.5 doesn't
release soon, I think the fix should be backported. This is the kind of
problem that would make users' heads spin. Multiple Squeezeboxes in
bridge mode in a DHCP network can't be _that_ unusual, and the MAC
address conflicts, when they happen, are going to cause much pain.

Having the WRONG MAC address, as long as it's unique, even if it
changes, isn't that serious. Having multiple Squeezeboxen with the
SAME MAC address, on the other hand, would appear to be a
critical-severity bug.

[slim] Re: SB2 wireless getting bizarre IP address

2006-01-29 Thread WisteriaVillage

First of all I wanted to thank "KitKat" for posting the fix for the DHCP
issue with regard to D-Link Routers in Turbo Mode.

Sean,

I seriously think this issue should be listed in FAQ section, why isn't
it? D-Link routers are widely used so why wouldn't you highlight this
potential setup problem to D-Link users? I personally wasted 2 hours
trying to get my squeezebox to aquire the right IP address so that i
could connect to the server but was unsuccessful till I read KitKat's
post.

More importantly what is the update with regard to getting this to work
in Turbo Mode? It's my understanding that SB1 worked OK in Turbo Mode
but only recently SB2/SB3 does not. I for one would prefer to turn
Turbo Mode back "ON".

Please provide all of us D-Link users with an update.

Thanks..
Steve

I think you will find the issue highlighted in the "router status"
pages on the wiki. As I understand it - the main FAQs are more to help
people decide if the Squeezebox is for them and provide more general
info.

Oh, and it's not just D-Link routers by the way - TurboG or Speedboost
(or whatever each manufacturer wants to call it) mode does lots of
things like try and vary the rate and size of packets, as well as put
them in a different order from the way they are sent. And each
manufacturer does it in a different way (and differently between models
from the same manufacturer).

That's why it's so hard to design a one size fits all firmware. What
works for D-Link, may not work for Belkin and so on.

Glad you got yours working though. If it's any consolation, I spent
most of a day getting a new Belkin router to work (precisely the same
set up as worked flawlessly with my old D-Link 624+). Turned out that
the DCHP is pretty flakey and will only really deal with static IP from
both Slimserver and music source. I also wouldn't have got there
without help from others here.

2006-01-29 Thread mrfantasy

I got MySQL running last night. It was fun, and I even updated the wiki
page a bit with some pointers.

I haven't run it through its paces yet but it seems a bit more
responsive. The catch for me is I'm using a bit more memory
(slimserver uses less, mysqld uses more than the difference) and with a
128 MB Kuro Box there's not much room to play.

Also of note is my album count went from 1018 to 994. I think some of
this might be that I've renamed a few albums (incorrect tagging from
freedb) and perhaps the SQLLite database wasn't cleaned up correctly.
Either that or I'm missing some albums (but I haven't noticed any yet.)

Thanks for the pointer. I found slimserver.log in /var/log on my
system, and the error message was:

install_driver(mysql) failed: Can't locate DBD/mysql.pm in @INC
[followed by more details about @INC]

I searched for this file and it's simply nowhere on my system. So
clearly it wasn't installed along with Slimserver. I'm currently
running version 6.0.2 - was MySQL support added in a later version?

I'm pretty sure the user on my system is 'slimserv' - that's how it
appears in /etc/passwd. And just to make sure usernames weren't being
truncated to 8 characters on display, I created another user called
'testlongname', and it was included to full length in /etc/passwd.
(Presumably there are some peculiarities with the FreeBSD version).

There are a lot of people running Slimserver on embedded or Mini-ITX
systems, any Celeryon would be okay.

2) The minimum amount of RAM required to run the OS and SlimServer (how

256mb would probably be fine, but I always buy as much RAM as I can
afford and skimp on CPU power to afford it. Swapping is a bad thing.

3) Would Win XP Home be adequate, or must I use Win XP Pro?

If this is a dedicated system, I'd just boot it with SlimCD and bypass
the whole issue of OS. XP Home is lacking a lot of network features, but
I'm not positive if it would be a problem or not. Better to skip it and
not find out.

4) A Linksys/Netgear (?) Wireless card

I'd also avoid wireless unless you have to use it. It's a pain. if you
do have to use it, get the WAP and cards from the same vendor at the

gear from all of them and they're all crap.

5) A 200GB HDD (?)
6) A CD-ROM Drive
7) A USB port so's I can sync my iPod to the iTunes library

Get lots of USB ports, they're handy.

8) The smallest profile cabinet I can get

Mini-ITX systems are very handy for this sort of thing, though they're
rather gutless. I wouldn't want to run Windows on one, but they're fine
for a single-purpose server.

iPod/iTunes use becomes interesting if you go with Linux, you can't run
iTunes on Linux and so would need to set up some automatic storage or
transfer of the XML file to/from the Linux server. This isn't that
difficult, but it's an extra step.

[slim] Question about development tree

2006-01-29 Thread gbruzzo

Dear All,

I am aware that this may not be the correct forum to post this
question, but:

Can someone provide me with a (ballpark) date for the official
introduction of slimserver 6.5?

I seem to understand it will be built around MySql rather than SqlLite:
what advantages are we to expect?

I currently run slimserver 6.2.1 on a Linkstation (thank you for all
the excellent tutorials!). It works sweet, were it not for the slight
lag it seems to experience when I browse too quickly through the
library (approx 4000 songs, so not immense) or fast forward a
particular piece of music (slimserver freezes sometimes). Will this
slight sluggishness be addressed in 6.5?

Thank you all in advance,

Giacomo

First, there is no one answer, just opinions.
These are mine.

The first question is do you want the cheapest or smallest?
The really small cases cost much more than a moderate mid-tower.

I'd build it using a modest AMD, something like a 2400+, you can
get the CPU and motherboard for less than $100. It is going to have
a built in Ethernet nic, so I'm not sure about your Wireless card.
You may end up with a more flexible system running a wire from the
built in NIC to a wireless WAP/Router.

Any modern motherboard is going to have at least two USB ports
for you iPod.

Ram is cheap, and more is better. Unless you are a geek, you
are probably better off with more RAM and spend less time
optimizing it. I always buy a gig of Ram, you might live
with less, but I would not think of less than 512

The CD drive is either very important or totally not.
My SlimServer is in the basement, I never touch it.
So I rip CDs on another computer and just move the files.
For for me, the cheapest $10 CD drive works fine for the
once a year upgrades of the OS.

Always get more disk drive than you think you'll need.
The price difference between your 200GB and a 250GB disk
is maybe $10. Going to 300 or more is a very small increment.
What you care about is disk quality, as you don't want to deal
with replacing it anytime soon

In your system, the legal Windows OS license is a huge part
of the total cost. I can see your system costing about $300 or so
with $100 for XP. You do not need XP pro, and I would strongly
suggest not using Windows at all. There are tons of free
distros for Linux, you get buy them for under $10 from places
like cheapbytes. If you get on such as Mandriva 2006, it is
as trivial to install as Windows. And then there is the
SlimServer CD from Mike, with Knoppix and slimserver
ready to go with one button push.

You need some video, not much, and most motherboards
have enough for a headless Slimserver. You will also
need a keyboard, mouse and monitor at least for the
installation. You don't need it for operation
if you have a normal network in your house and
other computers to manage the SlimServer over
your network. I just pull an obsolete monitor
off one of my basement shelves for the setup.
You do not need to pay more than $20 for the video card,
you probably can get one built in.

I would not pay for a floppy drive, not even the $5
that most shops charge to throw one in. Not used enough
to be worth it.

YMMV

I just ran the upgrade of the nightly build. Now my SB3 just keeps
rebooting during setup. As I enter networking information the cursor
freezes, then the screen goes blank, then the unit restarts. The SB3 is
now totally unusable. What a weekend! I feel like a beta tester who paid
money. I am still willing to pour hours of my time into making this
product function, if anyone has more suggestions.

Re: [slim] BOM for stand-alone Music Server

2006-01-29 Thread Mark Lanctot
Most of your other questions have been answered,
although I should point out that I'm running
SlimServer 6.2.2 on Windows XP Home quite
successfully.

There are a few very cheap "CPU on a board"
motherboards out there. ECS has one, the 760GX-M.
This has an AMD Socket 754 Athlon Mobile 2800+
but not soldered-in as on their earlier boards.
Heatsink and fan are installed as well. It's
amazingly cheap, on sale right now for $119.99
CDN. I hear PCChips makes others. Yes,
PCChips is the bottom of the barrel in terms of
quality though.

I have a much earlier ECS "CPU on a board" combo,
which has a 1.2 GHz Duron CPU soldered-in. It has
worked fine for me as a secondary computer and
would have no problem at all with SlimServer and
256 MB of RAM.

These boards have onboard video (nothing fancy)
and an onboard LAN port as well.

Use one of these boards with a basic case that has
a quality power supply, like the Antec Solution
series. Add a 250 - 300 GB IDE hard drive and a
cheap CD-ROM and you'd be all set.

2006-01-29 Thread Charles

I have had the same exact problems for about a week plus another.
I have a flawless wireless system for laptops but slimbox freezes.

The additional problem: mine has a power transformer that seems to be
arcing. The entire electrical circuit carries the cracking and popping
to other electrical devices (radios) on the same circuit when slimdevice
is plugged in. Some worry here about a fire danger.

Could the defective power supply also have caused the wireless problems
to develop?

Re: [slim] Re: Slimserver and OS X

2006-01-29 Thread dean blackketter

Martin,

The 6.2.2 nightly release should work with 10.2.8 (there was a bug in
6.2.1 that was fixed), but it will be the last release that does.

After that release, we'll be dropping support for the 10.2 line of
Mac OS. Consider upgrading to 10.3 or 10.4 (10.3 upgrade disks can
be found for about $50 online).

browser connection could be made, but now the server is running
smoothly. I am able to stream nicely to the current version of
Softsqueeze, 2.3, though it probably expects to be talking to
Slimserver 6.2.

I'm a bit concerned whether a new Squeezebox will be compatible with
this older version of Slimserver, though.

It's soldered. There are two 3 pin connections, and one 12 pin

Looks like a tossup between soldering in wires for display or in/out

2006-01-29 Thread JJZolx

> I just noticed slim.exe running in the background, with no

No, but slimtray.exe really doesn't do much, so it's not essential.
>From SlimTray you can: 1) start the SlimServer service, 2) stop the
SlimServer service, and 3) launch a browser, connected the SlimServer
web interface

#3 you can do just as easily (or easier) with a browser
favorite/bookmark. #1 and #2 are useful if you don't always run the
service and want to have a handy way of manually starting and stopping
it.

> Should the service be "Manual" or "Automatic" ?

These are the startup settings. When set to Automatic, the service
will be started whenever Windows starts (like many other Windows
services). If you want to run SlimServer 24x7 use Automatic, then you
won't have to manually start it. If you want to control when
SlimServer runs, perhaps to save the memory that it uses, then set it
to manual.

> How does the service interact with slimtray.exe and slim.exe?

slim.exe is SlimServer, the program that runs as the service. Apart
from the stop/start actions mentioned above, the only interaction
between the SlimTray and SlimServer are the little lights shown in the
tray icon when SlimServer is running.

Stuffit does not come with XP - that was most likely installed by your
vendor (or you at some point). Uninstall it (and all your zip prog's)
to see Windows' native Right-click on a zip Extract command.

The built-in extractor does not have nag screens, as its part of

[slim] Re: BOM for stand-alone Music Server

2006-01-29 Thread Jon

My original plan was to have a low-end server built ... until I stumbled
on a cheap ($265), low-end server that had everything I needed, in my
case:

AMD Sempron 3100+ CPU
MS WinXP Home
256MB memory (which I upgraded to 768GB for $20)
80GB Ultra ATA hard drive
52x32x52x CD-RW Drive

What I like about this particular PC (Powerspec 5500;
http://www.powerspec.com/systems/system_specs.phtml?selection=5500) is
that the motherboard has 4 SATA ports on it, and the cabinet appeared
to have four empty bays for future expansion (I have since discovered
the hard way that three of the four bays will take a bit of 'creative
re-engineering' if I want to fit a 3.5" drive in them). I added a
400GB SATA drive (which is where I intend to store all my music) for
$189, and am now in the process of ripping 800 CDs.

I was especially interested in having SATA ports, I personally like the
idea of separating my music collection from the disk containing the OS.
Also, I originally thought I was going to need two disks for my
collection, and was planning on using two SATA drives in a RAID0
configuration ... until some testing showed that my entire collection
won't take up more than about 250GB.

I should point out that the Powerspec 5500 is normally $350, but they
were running a $50 rebate and I found an open-box system which reduced
the cost further.

The one thing this server does not offer is a small form factor, it
uses a mid-size cabinet.

I guess the moral of this story is, you might be able to buy a
pre-built system as cheaply as having one built for you, if you shop
around for rebate deals and open-box specials.

One important question is, how many CDs do you have to rip? Ripping is
somewhat CPU-intensive ... I find that when I rip to FLAC with
Compression Level 5, or to Windows Media Lossless, my CPU is pegged at
100% busy. My CD R/W seems to be reading as fast as it is capable, so
the CPU doesn't seem to be slowing down the ripping ... but with a
faster CPU, I could add an external CDROM and rip two CDs at a time.
This won't be an issue once I get through the stack of 800 CDs, though.
With the Sempron CPU and 52x CD R/W, most of my CDs rip in 1.5 to 3
minutes, depending on length.

Re: [slim] Re: Slimserver and OS X

2006-01-29 Thread dean blackketter

Whoops, sorry about that.

The problem in 6.2.1 that was causing SlimServer to not run on 10.2.8
has been fixed, but in the process of adding support for the intel
macs, a new bug has been introduced. Dan's in the middle of fixing
this new issue.

So I (too) need to update my Perl library? Sigh!

[slim] Strange things happen with multiple genres (6.2.2)

2006-01-29 Thread willem

Hello,
I'm running the 6.2.2 5877 Jan 27th nightly on Windows 2000 and the
following strange things happen with multiple genres.
(The same happens with previous 6.2.2 and 6.2.1 releases).
- I have defined the ; as separator for multiple genres (I don't use
multiple artists, albums)
- part of my library has two genres defined
When completely scanned, only one or two of the many albums with double
genres appear in the genre list.
For all other double genre files, either no genre is available anymore
or only the one defined first.

The funny thing is that during the scanning all albums with two genres
do appear under the two defined genres! Somehow the second genre or
both genres are removed somewhere during the scan.
I tried the following:
- Remove the cache directory, same results
- De-install Slimserver and re-install (only keeping the prefs file)
- removed from some albums the ID3V1 tags, same results

My library is 95% MP3, a few wma (one WMA album i defined with multiple
genres)

I installed the 29 jan nightly of 6.5 on another PC, pointing to the
same library. Then everything worked as expected.
Should multiple genres work with 6.2.2? Or should I wait for 6.5?

Is 6.5 already stable enough? The 3 players in my house have the status
'production', especially the players in the kid rooms :-)
I can't afford complaints about outage of the Slimserver

Thanks,

Oddly enough, I took mine apart after the first post (but didn't take

What's with the Torx screws? You guys really love them, don't you? Is

I wouldn't try to disconnect the display.

I was trying to figure out if, without the case, it would fit inside a

Well no, not after being warned ;)

I should have just said, 'it looks easier to hardwire the connectors',
but I have a wired only SB so I'm not sure how the wireless card fits
in..

EDIT: But a modified SB with a detached display, but the same rca
jacks, would be pointless- or at least silly, which is why I titled the

[slim] Can't connect Squeezebox 3 to mp3-Stream with SlimProto-Command

2006-01-29 Thread te_gonzales

Hi.

I'm doing some experiments with a small own-written software that shall
control my Squeezebox3 instead of slimserver.

All documents that i have found (Technical documentation and Wiki) seem
to be a little out of date, but anyway i'm now at the point where i can
send a "strm"-command over the TCP socket, but there is sill an error
somewhere.

After sending the strm-command i get response with a STMc and then a
STMe event code, but after a few seconds a DSCO-Message.

This is the command i send to the Squeezebox in order to get a stream
to this URL : "http://64.236.34.196:80/stream/1040":

0 56 "strms1m" 5 "0" 0 "0" 64 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 80 64 236 34 196 "GET
/stream/1040 HTTP/1.0" 10 10 10

(Every number is one byte written in decimal)

The server is from Club977, retreived over shoutcast, the link worked
with vlc media-player.

As i can see the squeezebox establishes a connection to the server but
for some reason the connection is closed after a few seconds.

Can anybody help ?

Best regards,

Tom.

Not so much - they just go in faster and don't slip off the driver.
Also we have the torque dialed in very precisely (using $700
screwdrivers!) to tap the plastic properly. With philips heads it's not
as easy to control - you'd have to press harder to keep the driver in
the screw head, making it less consistent. Here's the tool
http://www.etorque.com/html/edriv_electric_screwdrivers.html

It's not really a concern unless you have a LOT of screws to put in. :)

When you say "avoid wireless", are you referring specifically to the
end-to-end connection between the server and the Squeezebox (via a
wireless router), or just to the portion of the connection between the
server and the router?

I have two Squeezeboxes arriving next week, I was planning on going
hardwired between my server and my router, then wireless from the
router to the squeezeboxes - is this a situation to be avoided (and
why?).

Thanks.

Not really. The board(s) just needs to stay with the display. The

Actually that is about right. SB2 had a separate display module
connected to the main board by a removable flex cable. In SB3 there is
no separate board for the display, the glass is mounted directly to the
main board. (The glass is what I was suggesting NOT to remove - SB2's
flex-connected module is easy to remove).

Here's the SB2 dissection:

Sorry I don't have a full set of photos like this for SB3.

Cool! Thanks for the reference.

I'm familiar with power screwdrivers, although we don't use them. We
use power tappers, which are related, but ours are air driven, not
electric, and not hand actuated but machine actuated, and cycle at 1
cycle per second.

We're threading metal, not plastic, so we need a bit more power. These
are just over half horsepower units.

http://irtools.com/IS/product.asp/id/45,268,303,486,471

The same company makes a power screwdriver with the same air motor,
which is why I (peripherally) know about them.

[slim] Re: BOM for stand-alone Music Server

2006-01-29 Thread Michaelwagner

Well, you were asking about the server box, and you wrote you wanted a
wireless card there.

If your data takes two wireless trips (one to the router, one from the
router to the slim) you automatically half your capacity. That's not a
good thing to do in any case, if you want to plan ahead for more of
them.

There are some current problems with wireless SBs, but I expect they'll
get fixed in time.

I was more remarking that you shouldn't build a dependence on wireless
into the server.

That said, I always believe that it is better to not radiate. If you
can put real wires into your house for not too great a cost in time and
effort, that's generally the preferred route.

I live in an apartment. I'm not allowed to go into the walls. I'm sure
the landlord would have a fit about what I've already done to the
place, drilling through the walls in a few places. So I run wireless
into the bedroom.

But it's easily the least reliable part of my setup.

YMMV

Okay, I figured out what the problem is.

Some of the tracks in the album had the disc number set, and others
didn't (the 'TPOS' field).

I think SlimServer gets confused when it sees this and starts a new
album listing each time the field changes values.

I wrote a simple perl script to skim all the files and zero out the
frame when it wasn't useful, and the problem was solved.

It's actually the same display -the lens determines the color. SB2 uses
a neutral gray color, whereas SB3 is a little more purple giving the
natively-green display an aqua color.

Just a wild guess, but could it be a hard drive going bad? If so, it
would be happening during a period when the hard drive access light is
lit on the front of your PC.

It would be good to determine if it is a bad drive. If it is, then get
everything on the drive backed up ASAP before it completely dies.

I would much rather see pitch and tone controls done as a server-side
function. There is *so* much more you can do beyond the primitive
control on SB1. Eg it is possible to "speed up" music without changing
the pitch (a frequency-domain instead of time-domain function). If you
haven't heard this effect before it's pretty slick - i don't know of
any easy tool to do it - last time i did this was ten years ago with
