IIRC you need to delete slimserversql.db when 'regressing' from 6.5,
because the database structure is not backward compatible. SS should
then do a rescan when it starts.

[slim] Buffalo Linkstation vs. USB HDD for MP3 Storage

2006-02-07 Thread Kevin Weller
I'm not sure this question has an answer but I'm going to ask it
anyway.

Music playback on my Squeezeboxes keeps stopping for some reason and
I'm trying to find and eliminate the cause. The problem is worse when I
have 2 Squeezeboxes synchronised.

I thought the problem might be wireless contention but I've just
eliminated that by connecting the only Squeezebox that is
playing...well until it stopped just now...to a hub.

I currently use a Buffalo Linkstation on a 100mb switched network for
central storage - music, documents, etc. My perception is that is slow
and I wonder whether this is the issue. The Linkstation is also
accessed by other machines in the network for document updates, back-up
and MP3 tag edits so it could possibly be contention on the LAN
connection to the Linkstation.

SlimServer is running on an IBM T23 laptop (1.1Ghz PIII, 512Mb RAM)
which should be more than adequate. The only other things running on
there are MusicMagic and AVG (the MP3 and SlimServer directories are
excluded from the on-access scanner).

I'm wondering storing the MP3s on a USB HDD connected to the laptop via
a USB2 PCMCIA card (only USB1 on board) will improve the situation.

I guess my question boils down to: which is the more efficient of
resources and which is likely to have the greatest throughput - the
Buffalo Linkstation or the external PCMCIA/USB2 HDD?

As an aside, are there any diagnostics I can switch on in SlimServer so
it will log what's going on and, perhaps, help me pinpoint the problem?

(I'm running the 6.2.2 nightly from 5th Feb at the moment but I've had
the problem for longer than that)

Thanks.

Kevin

2006-02-07 Thread Bradley

Hey Greg:

Great to hear you've got something started on playing Sirius. I think
you'll need to pass the WMA streams to AlienBBC in order to play them
across all Slim hardware. A forum member named Triode should be able
to give you assistance with this.

Also, in order for you to display song information from Sirius, you'll
need a real time feed for that. Most folks who have made online
players use the following realtime channel/song feed:

http://itson.siriusbackstage.com/

There's a new online player which is a yahoo widget which is very
slick, and shows what you can do with the channel/song feed and apply
it to slimserver's capabilities. You might want to look at it for
ideas...

http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=38478

Really looking forward to helping you test your Sirius plugin. I'm not
in my car much and really want to make more use of my lifetime
subscription without having to sit in front of my pc!

I agree with the OP that the ones intended for making games go boom

But I presume the Edirol's sound decent hooked both to the Squeezebox

[slim] Re: Buffalo Linkstation vs. USB HDD for MP3 Storage

2006-02-07 Thread dropbear

While the Linkstation is a cool peice of kit, it is limited by its
relatively slow cpu (233mhz) and 64mb of ram. My Kurobox HG has a
faster cpu (266mhz) and 128mb of ram and I can generate these sort of
break-ups if I try to get the server to do too many things at once.

Slimserver 6.2 does have some diagnostic functions under the Help
Section called Server Network Health. Turn on the diagnostics and
run your SBs as you normally would and then review the numbers
displayed.

Couple of other things to check are the ethernet cables, the
linkstation may only be conncting at 10mbs, not expected 100mbs, if the
cable is a bit dodgy. Also what format of music are you streaming? WAV
files can overwhelm a network, whereas Flac is also lossless, but with a
smaller network foorptint.

Hope this helps
Pete

Well, I did it anyway just to see and it took a while to set up!

My initial reaction is the USB disk is better. I've just transferred
the data (77Gb) and SlimServer is currently rescanning (10.4k tracks).
This is the first time I can remember a Squeezebox continuing to play
while a SlimServer 'clear library and rescan everything' is running, it
generally stops very quickly.

Early days of course but it's a good start.

Have you tried using mplayer and/or wmadec directly (on the command
line) with the URL your plugin generates for a particular Sirius
station? Put aside the internals of the Slimserver code, just see if
mplayer/wmadec (not to mention Windows Media Player itself) can play the
URL if you run them on the command line.

If so, then in theory you should be able to play it directly via the
Tune In web page and SB2/SB3 hardware should be able to connect directly
to the URL.

But without doing the above test you can't really know if the URL itself
is wrong or if there's something about the WMA stream that's confusing
the WMA decoding code in the SB2/SB3 firmware.

I must admit I can see both sides to this. I bought into the community
and open source nature of SlimDevices because I like to tweak and

review would not expect to have to touch a damn thing after
 installation.

There is a dilemma here, to be more successful for those people who
want to install and leave alone, then it has to be a lot more solid out
of the box. No matter how many times you can point to inferior products,
that doesn't make this one better. At the same time it still has to
appeal to the community that contribute and therefore be fast moving.

I personally think the answer is to have much more solid and
well-tested releases for more general users, rather than enthusiasts.
These would be updated a lot less often and be more rigorously QA'd.
The nuts like me who like to live on the bleeding edge can carry our
with the nightlies and betas and scratch our heads when it doesn't
work. I know it's kind of like this already, but I think the builds for
people who don't want to fiddle need to be more robust. The fact that
Roku are tied to products like iTunes gives them that.

 Paul

Well put! Having a stable turnkey solution is appealing for the
consumer who simply wants to play their encoded music on their stereo.
May be not a whole lot of options and features, but easy configuration,
setup and operation.

At the same time, having the SB and slimserver pieces available for
hackers to make code changes or enhancements is appealing to a
different group of consumers.

As an example, TiVo boxes can be hacked and modifications made (voids
warranty) or you can simply enjoy the system the way it was designed.

either a FLAC or an MP3 stream for Softsqueeze to play.)

Yeah. The stream plays fine when I paste the URL into Window's Media
Player. Over in the developer forum I posted some debug output that may
be useful. This post is at
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20814

I don't have much experience with how SlimServer handles audio streams so
I'm not sure what to do next. From the debugging out put it almost looks
as if SlimServer gets the stream, looks at it, decides that the hardware
decoder can play it, and then passes the URL over to the player to play.
The hardware player then seems to get nothing back. Am I reading the log
correctly?

If so, could it be that the URL is only playable once, and since the
server reads from it first before sending it to the player that it can't
be read again?

[slim] next album button?

2006-02-07 Thread ideasculptor

Am I the only one who sees the utility in a next album button? I really
prefer to listen in 'shuffle albums' mode, so that I still get the music
in the order intended by the artist. But often, shufle albums will
deliver several albums in a row that I'm not in the mood for, and there
doesn't appear to be any way to just skip to the next album, without
fast forwarding through 10+ songs.

My very first hard drive mp3 player (personal jukebox - the first of
its kind) had this functionality. You could make the next/prev buttons
apply to any field - track, album, artist, genre, playlist etc, and it
was really useful for rapidly jumping to the next thing when in a
random mode. I miss that functionality terribly, and not one audio
device that I am aware of has implemented it.

Does anyone else out there think that holding down the next/prev
button, or maybe double pressing it rapidly, should result in the next
album, when listening in shuffle albums mode? How would one go about
making this change? Is it something that can be done in slimserver, or
does it need to be done in the firmware of the player?

Maybe. But that wouldn't be at all unusual. :)

I really prefer to listen in 'shuffle albums' mode, so that I still get
the music in the order intended by the artist.
Do you mean via the Random Mix plugin? I wasn't aware there was a
'shuffle albums' mode.

But often, shufle albums will deliver several albums in a row that I'm
not in the mood for, and there doesn't appear to be any way to just
skip to the next album, without fast forwarding through 10+ songs.

If indeed you're using Random Mix, then you should request this
capability from the plugin author.

There is. As part of the shuffle options: Song, Album, Off.
I'll be damned. Never noticed that before. If I had, I'd probably
have filed a request for a pref to disable it, as it's just taking up

 Such a request already exists:

a feature request nearly two years old will ever be implemented?Legitimate, show-stopper bug reports certainly do not just get marked future and I suspect you well know that.Feature requests are exactly what it says -- REQUESTS -- and in my opinion, every one of them should be marked future by default! I think the mistake, if any, that SlimDevices makes is that they assign a target fixed version too optimisticly and end up slipping it to future releases. There is no implied guarantee that just because a feature request has been filed that it will ever be added. However, it does improve a bug's chances if it has a rallying point -- a place where a feature can be discussed while preserving the discussion for the next time someone brings it up or becomes interested.
Also, the number of open bugs/features really has no bearing on the usefulness of the database. By that argument the internet would long since have been made useless for end users, because there is so much content out there.

Any suggestions on fixing the 403 error that complains about the

Not so hard if you can do it as a beginner mode / expert mode

Why, if the majority of users don't want it and just want plug and
play, why leave it in their version? The enthusiasts can still have all
the bells and whistles in their version, can't they? Lets face it most
people don't use most of the features of most equipment and the best
designs don't punish them for not using those features. It's home vs
pro editions of the software, and it can be from the same code base.

It begs the question - what is the ratio of enthusiasts versus average
consumers who buy SBs? If there is, or the potential for, many more Joe
Consumers than tweakers, then SlimServer should get packaged and
adjusted to fit that need.

Re: [slim] Re: next album button?

2006-02-07 Thread Philip Meyer
Implementation not too hard: if ffwd gets a press/hold, and you are in
Album shuffle mode, clear the playlist and go get a new Album different
from the current one. Similarly if you are in Year and Genre mode,
perhaps?

Single press ffwd skips forward to next track, whilst hold-ffwd goes into track
fast-forward play for me - I wouldn't want to lose that. It would have to be
another key, or make the action configurable.

As another thought, can't you press right-arrow to go into song info, navigate
to the album name or artist name, and press Add to remove all tracks in the
current playlist for the selected item? Music would then continue with the
next remaining item in the playlist. It might confuse random play with the
number of tracks queued up for future play though?

[slim] Internet Radio in WMA?

2006-02-07 Thread Chris Kantarjiev

I'm trying to get connected to some radio stations that do their
streaming in WMA format. I found the wiki entry

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?WMA

which got me close, but I'm not there yet. My log file looks like this:

LAME version 3.96.1 (http://lame.sourceforge.net/)
Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 17249 Hz - 17782 Hz
Encoding stdin to stdout
Encoding as 44.1 kHz 128 kbps stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (11x) qval=5
Assuming raw pcm input file : Forcing byte-swapping
: Error while opening file

The wiki entry specifies

wma mp3 * *
[ffmpeg] -v 0 -i $FILES$ -f wave - | [lame] -x -m s -r -S -q 5 -s 44.1 - -

I thought that perhaps for IR, there's no filename supplied to the
converter, so I deleted the -i $FILES$.

That seemed to help (someone who cares might want to update the Wiki;
I don't know if there's a way to have this work for .wav files as
well as radio...)

But now I get

Assuming raw pcm input file : Forcing byte-swapping
LAME version 3.96.1 (http://lame.sourceforge.net/)
Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 17249 Hz - 17782 Hz
Encoding stdin to stdout
Encoding as 44.1 kHz 128 kbps stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (11x) qval=5
/dev/dsp: No such device
Could not find audio grab device

I'm doing this on an NSLU2 running Unslung5.5b. There's a
/dev/dsp entry in the file system.

# ls -l /dev/dsp
crw-r--r--1 root root 14, 3 Dec 31 1969 /dev/dsp

I'm in treacherous waters here. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
chris

[slim] Re: KEXP archived audio

2006-02-07 Thread MrC

Skippy Wrote:
So, I would really love to be able to stream archived audio from KEXP.
Specifically John in the morning. I can't stream at work so archives
are the only way. But, they have it set up so that when you start one
of these archives, it starts up it's own player. Is there a way that I
can stream this thru my squeezebox3?

here is a link to the archive page if it helps:
 http://kexp.org/streamarchive/archive_player.asp

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well, you can open the player pop-up and get the stream via right-click
Properties.

Such a stream looks like:

which gets translated into:

[slim] Weird problem with various artist tracks

2006-02-07 Thread benthos

I'm using Slimserver 6.2.1. Yesterday I was listening to some flac
files from a Various Artists cd and noticed that Slimserver calls the
artist for various artists tracks new (which happens to be the name of
the subfolder that the tracks are saved in). So for example, one
tracklisting looks like this:

1. Henry Lee - Dick Justice from Various - Anthology of American Folk
Music Vol. 1 - Disc 1A (Ballads) by new PlayAdd to playlist
2. Nelstone's Hawaiians - Fatal Flower Garden from Various - Anthology
of American Folk Music Vol. 1 - Disc 1A (Ballads) by newPlayAdd to
playlist

Etc. etc.

When I click on new, it brings up several of the Various Artists
recordings I've got. None of the tags have new in the artist name,
so I can't understand why Slimserver would call the artist for these
tracks new. Also, I found that rescanning the library didn't do any
good. Any ideas?

Chris

[slim] Re: Audio dropouts during Search Music - Possible to increase buffering?

2006-02-07 Thread treble

I got the same thing with skipping to the next song in a random mix.
But my PC is not a dual Xeon by far ('fairly powered' you call it!?).
For me it only occured when I was using MySQL. When I switched back to
SQLite the dropouts disappeared. Unexpected, since I thought MySQL
would be quicker. I have about 13K tracks.

At one time I had a 'cache' indicator in my SoftSqueeze, like percent
full. Now I can't remember how I got it to show.

And you're sure you put the files in the right folder?!? You could also
check the security settings. Be sure Everyone can read those files.
