Ben,
I can't comment on your Ajax change, but my 770 arrived yesterday and I
tried out your skin. Just wanted to say that it's a great piece of work,
looks very professional. Well done.

Hopefully I'll be able to provide some constructive feedback as I start
to use the interface in anger.

Cheers,

Re: [slim] Custom Browse Groupings?

2006-03-07 Thread Michael Herger

I'd like to set up my SqueezeBox / SlimServer such that when I choose
Browse Music, I can create custom browse categories. For example, In
addition to Browse Artists, Browse Albums, etc, I'd like to add one for
Live Music. All of my live albums are tagged such that the word
"(Live)" appears at the end of the album name name.

There's a plugin around which should allow to do this.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20533

I haven't tested it yet, but from what the author says it should allow for
"smart" playlists based on SQL requests.

I don't have a 770 but I thought I'd try the skin anyway. Using 6 Mar
nightly.

It looks very promising and is very responsive, but I'm having some
problems:

Firefox doesn't seem to display all the album art in Artwork view.
Some of it just never updates
IE does, but doesn't give a vertical scrollbar, so you can never get to
the bottom of the page.
In either, clicking on any Player control in the 'Now Playing' window
gives a "Playlist for this player is empty" message.

I had issues with both IE and FireFox behaving properly. Switched to
Opera on the PC and all is well.

I, too, just got my n770 and spent about 3 hours last night streaming
and "remoting" from my Slimserver install in my basement.

I can't comment on the imrpovments due to ajax implementation, but I
will say that the skin responds as well as I'd expect it to on a light
device. FAR better than the trials I had using Palm V over bluetooth
and iPaq 5550 over WLAN over the last couple of years.

Many thanks to Ben for all his hard work!

Very interesting - except for the price. The client isn't exactly my
cup of tea, and the display is way to small (SB has spoiled us!). The
holy grail is still the hand-held visual remote (Nokia, Treo, PDA, a la

integrated power-line networking without overlaying some sort of
wireless!
It's a nice tidy system, I can see where it would work very well for a

[slim] I know I've asked this before, but.... (!)

2006-03-07 Thread DrNic

Hi all
A while back I commented that on my system (currently running SS 6.2.2
- 5448 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252, with a "SB3") if an album was a
"compilation" album then the server would not list the tracks in track
order. I thought this might have been an iTunes/mp3 issue so have held
off whilst I converted over to FLAC, but it still persists.
To clarify via the web browser (Firefox 1.0.7) - in the left hand pane,
viewing a compilation album (FLAC) the tracks are not in number order
but seem to be ordered by the performing artist alphabetically.
However, if the album is selected to play as a whole then the tracks
appear correctly in the player pane on the right hand side. Also the
SB3 itself lists the tracks in correct order, even when browsing the
album itself (like viewing the left pane on the browser).
Is there a way to correct this behaviour?

Thanks
Nic

Is the MMM plugin enabled? Read step 5 of the wiki for instructions:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?MusicMatchMixerHeadlessOnLinux

Once MMM is setup playlist can be generated from the web or through the
remote.

A rescan can be triggered via the MMM web interface
(http://localhost:10002). The headless mode doesn't have the "watch

[slim] Forum suggestion

2006-03-07 Thread DrNic

Greetings all
What would users of this forum think to the ability to add a "fixed"
line to a topic/thread??
We see lots of thread saying things like "Can't connect to slimserver"
"Can't save playlists" etc etc and if you go through (the sometimes
many pages) the thread you find the problem has been rectified..
Now, I remember seeing on another forum (sorry can't remember which one
though!) threads that have had a conclusion marked with the "answer" to
the original post, this answer linking to the post that states the
solution.

Would this be desirable/possible on this forum?
It would be good particularly for the Beginners forum...

[slim] Why is rescan playlists taking so long?

2006-03-07 Thread dborn

Hi,

I'm working on a Perl script to copy MusicMagic generated playlists
from my WinXP PC to be copied and converted to a Linux SlimServer-like
playlist. Once the playlist is generated, my script will notice it,
convert it and copy it in the proper directory for the slimserver and
then it requests the slimserver to rescan the playlist folder through
the CLI interface.

My music collection is large (~17000 tracks) but my playlist directory
contains 1 test playlist of 10 songs and yet, slimserver will be busy
rescanning the playlist folder for several minutes (10 or more?).

It seems it might be scanning more than just the playlist folder. is
this normal and if so, why?

Is there a better way to get that new/modified playlist into the
slimserver (using the CLI interface from within my script)?

I'm running the latest 6.2.2 nightly from about a week ago.

Thanks,
Daniel

Actually, many (most?) DHCP servers will even step around a statically

think it can happen that the server goes to hand out your address just
as you announce yourself.

Best to keep beginners clear of that can of worms where possible.

What version of Firefox? I tested it extensively in Firefox 1.5 on both
Linux and Windows and I don't see the player control issue. Browse
artwork is a different matter-- on mine it crashes slimserver (crash is
not related to the skin)!

If anyone seeing issues with Firefox can post additional information
(javascript console errors, screenshots, etc), I will try to take a
look at it.

Feel free to use IE to see if you have a Firefox-only issue, but I
won't fix any IE-specific bugs.

While I'm mostly focused on supporting the 770, I think this skin, or
perhaps eventually some fork/derivation of it, holds a lot of promise
as a more general interface.

cheers,

Browsing is by "Browse Albums" - this produces the problem

Browsing by "music folder" lists the tracks in the correct order as
they are named with the track number first then name (01 blah, 02 blah
blah etc)

Tags are all perfect (ahem!) in such that all tracknumbers are present
and correct with no other sorting tags specified,, or partinsets etc..

thanks

I think, therein, lies the rub!...

Admins probably don't have the time to do this, and the original poster
may not find this intuitive, or even realise this should be done without
it being specified as a rule of the board..
I wonder whether Ben might help me out here, but I think the other
board just had a "select this as the answer to my problem" type of

If you press the left arrow key (back) you should get the option to

You must have set up SN to use it though... First attempt you have to
set up your time zone/language and get a SN Pin number - this you then
enter at www.squeezenetwork.com when you have created an account.

Ok, just put up a new build.. 0.26..

One big new feature and bunch of little fixes:

* F5 refreshes playlist.

* Optimised redraw requests in Now Playing.

* Added 'Icon Pause' option in Tray menu to turn off the pause/play
icon click feature.

* Tracknums now displayed on tooltips and in playlist window.

* Changes to some of the button text.

and the big new feature..

* Queued CLI requests - previously Moose tried to be nice to
Slimserver by sending out one CLI message at a time. Maintaining this
was becoming a bit of a nightmare and there were some instances,
particularly on startup, where often a couple would hit the server at
the same time. On a slow server machine this would sometimes take it
out. Not ideal. Enter the new Queued CLI Request feature which should
hopefully fix this. It also paves the way for multiple operations on
the playlist, adding album tracks in the correct order, and a whole
host of other features which need multiple CLI messages... Now, it's a
bit of a scary change, so I've added an option in the preferences
dialog to turn it off.. Hopefully it wont break too much, and should
speed some things up, particularly startup speeds..

Enjoy,

[slim] Wireless network fails after half hour playing FLACs

2006-03-07 Thread mwoodroof

Hi, I have just started trying to use FLAC files as I think this is the
best option for ripping my CD collection at Hi Fi quality. However I
have hit a problem. To be fair I think the problem is with my wireless
router (a Belkin F5D6230-3), not my SB3, but I thought that everyone on
this forum is so helpful this would be a good starting point!

Basically, when I play MP3s, the system works fine, have played for a
3+ hours with no problem.

However, now I started using FLACs, after about half an hour or so of
playing, the connection to the SB3 is dropped as my router fails (the
router totally hangs - the internet connection fails too). A simple
power cycle of the router gets everything up and running again, but
obviously this is a major pain!

I am guessing this is something to do with the large FLAC file size,
and that once the router has streamed over a certain amount of data it
is failing - that would explain why MP3s will play for a long time but
FLACs always hang the network quite soon.

I have looked at a few forums and tried changing the wireless network
channel - it was originally on ch11, I have now tried ch1 and ch6 as I
understand these are "non-overlapping" (or something similar!) and the
best to try, but this has not made any difference.

For information I am using 64 bit WEP encryption.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this and suggestions
as to what I should try next?

Maybe this is a better question for a wireless networking forum - can
anyone point me at a good one?

Thanks in advance for any help with this!!

Mark Lanctot Wrote:
> I have also heard of people using 'Proxomitron'

> "web-filtering proxy", whatever that is. :-)

That was me.

For those interested, a proxy is a service that makes requests on
behalf of a program (network client). For example, rather than having
your browser make direct connections to websites, it instead makes
requests to the proxy service, which itself then makes the requests on
behalf of the client. This is useful in a variety of situations,
ranging from security, access control, and caching commonly accessed
content to reduce download traffic.

Once your network client (eg. your web browser) is configured to
connect to the Proxomitron proxy instead of via direct connection,
Proxomitron acts as a middleman, and makes the web requests and passes
the results to the client.

The web-filtering capabilities in Proxomitron allow real-time injection
/ deletion of content. This allows users to customize what is
ultimately presented to their browsers or passed to web servers. A
common example is the removal of banner ads, blocking ad sites, or
modifying styles sheets, all based on user-defined custom rules.

The key aspect of Proxomitron that I indicated was its log capability.
You can capture and see all the requests your browser makes to a web
server, and all the replies sent back to the browser. This gives you a
quick ability to view the ULRs oft-hidden within javascript,
service-side cgi's, etc. You open the log just before connecting to
the station, make the connection, and then just search the log for the
streaming URLs.

Yes I've confirmed it writes the artwork to MP3 (and FLAC I think)

[slim] Multiple Library Question (Ape + Ogg)

2006-03-07 Thread verbatone

Hi,

I'm running slimserver on a linux box and have all my music on an
external hardrive which has two partitions. My first partition is a
big drive where I store all my lossless music (monkey audio). My
second partition is where I convert all the ape files to ogg files,
plus I add all my misc. other audio files, podcasts, random mp3 files,
etc. I do this so I can sync my iriver portable player to a backup
harddrive space.

Since the .ape & .ogg files are sort of duplicates, and I put a link in
the lossless drive to the lossy drive, I get duplicates of every files
since I have 1 ape and 1 ogg for every ripped song. My question is, is
there is any option to get rid of the .ogg files in my library, or do I
have to sort out all the other random music files (not oggs) separately
and add them to the slimserver library in a separate file from the
oggs?

Thanks!

[slim] Re: Wireless network fails after half hour playing FLACs

2006-03-07 Thread mageeol

This same sort of thing happened to me when attempting to use the Zyxel
P-330W as my wireless router. I was actually using 3 of them--2 as
wireless Ethernet bridges (for a couple of wired-only SB2s and some
other devices) and 1 as a wireless router. The ones that I used as
bridges worked flawlessly, but the wireless router would reboot every
time I tried to stream music to the SB2 that was more than about
192kbps (including, of course, FLACs). I was sure that the router was
rebooting, too--I checked the logs on the unit to confirm.

I concluded that the P-330W was unstable under load as a wireless
router, so I replaced it with a Linksys WRT54G v5, which has worked
great. Since making that change a couple months ago, I haven't had a
single wireless network instability with the WRT54G or either of the
P-330W units.

So...you're probably right. This is more of a wireless network under
load issue. Your Belkin unit likely isn't stable (for whatever reason)
when under significant load. Good luck resolving it--I decided to throw
money at the problem to make it go away.

[slim] Podcast or Podcasts

2006-03-07 Thread barcar

I subscribe to some iTunes Podcasts with (surprise, surprise) a genre of
"Podcast".

When SlimServer 6.2 scans my library some tracks are listed under the
"Podcasts" (plural) genre and some under "Podcast".

Looking at the raw tags on the files, they seem to be tagged
"Podcast".

Anybody got any idea why this might happen?

Thanks.

not all iTunes podcasts mark the genre as "podcast"

the iTunes scan adds a specific "podcasts" genre to all tracks found
in the "podcasts" iTunes playlist. As each track can have multiple
genres, this allows teh server to provide an "iTunes Podcasts" menu
item that searches for those items and provides them as an instant

I feared I wasn't making myself clear. I want to access all the random
files (the ones that don't have a lossless counterpart) that I have
dispursed within all the ogg files, so that's why I added the link to
the lossy drive space. Doing this leads to my ability to access all
the random files (mp3, aac, wav, etc), but adds something like the
following to the library:

Track1 - BandA - SongB (<-.ape file)
Track1 - BandA - SongB (<-.ogg file)

This happens for every lossless track I have. I don't want the ogg
files to show up in the library, but want to keep the mp3, aac,
wav...files that are in the same lossy directory
Thanks.

If none of the random files are of type ogg, I believe you can simply
comment out the ogg line in your types.conf, then wipe and rescan.
Obviously you will loose the ability to play ANY ogg file, but it might
be less painful than the obvious solution of moving your random files
into a seperate directory structure and linking specifically to that.

Ok, I get it now. This is still inelegant, but what about separating
your ogg and your non-ogg lossy formats? They could be different
directories on the same drive. Then point your link from the ape
partition to the non-ogg files.

And, for sync'ing your portable, put a link from the ogg space to the
non-ogg lossy space (not the other way around) and point it to the ogg
space. Of course, this assumes that the iRiver can handle this kind of
link, and that assumption could be dead wrong.

Well, it's missing a module. Any functionality depending on that module
won't work. So you'd better follow the advise and run

[slim] Problem scanning particular album

2006-03-07 Thread flopperman

I'm having problems getting the SlimServer to scan a particular album
correctly.

The album folder contains 16 mp3 files and a cover.jpg

Symptom: When I Browse Artwork the album shows up with a placeholder,
even though I have set up the server to not show placeholders. When I
then click the placeholder the album view does have a picture. And
sometimes after a rescan the album view contains duplicate entries for
some of the songs.

My testing:
1) Enabeling debugging (d_scan and d_artwork) and performing a full
scan. The log is too big to see any scan info, but the artwork info
looks correct (looks like all the other albums). Are there any way to
see more of the log?

2) Placing another cover.jpg in the folder (From an album without this
problem). Full scan. Same result.

3) Making a new music folder with only this album. Full scan. Problem
gone.

4) Moving album to test server (only album on the server). Full Scan.
No problem.

I have had the problem for some time. Both on 6.2.1, a 6.2.2 Nightly, a
6.5b nightly and on a current Subversion.

I have looked at the ID3 tags with different editors to see if there
was anything strange. Did not find anything.

I'm running on Linux (Fedora 4).

What can I do to solve this problem?

Yes, you are absolutely right. Fishbone looks the same, so I guess
it's a 6.5 issue. Interestingly it finds and displays some artwork ...
and then imediately looses it and gives the 'not found' symbol.

[slim] Re: Problem scanning particular album

2006-03-07 Thread snarlydwarf

Every time this has happened to me, it is because a song outside of that
directory had the same 'Album' tag.

Ie, something was either mistagged or it's a common album name like
'Unplugged' or 'Best of' or even Frank Sinatra: Trilogy vs the ELP
album of the same name.

Check the songs in the album list and make sure they're all what
they're supposed to be and that a 'foreign' track didn't sneak in. If
it's a "common" album name, add that to the list of common names and do
a full wipe-rescan.

[slim] Re: Slimserver CPU consumption

2006-03-07 Thread gbreit

This isn't necessarily a "best practice", but merely what works for me.

I use the "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" option under
"Preferences-Advanced" in iTunes. Sure, I could do the organization
myself by creating subdirs, etc., but this feature is too convenient
and I am too lazy, so I use it.

Downside of this is that iTunes makes changes to the library dir/file
structure any time you:

-- Change a song title
-- Change an album title
-- Change an artist name
-- Mark/unmark an album as "Part of a compilation".
-- Change track/disc number

Unfortunately, I find this frequently necessary because of errors in
the CDDB database.

So, trouble with SlimServer happens under the following scenario:

-- You import a CD using iTunes
-- SlimServer scans that new entry (I believe by reading the iTunes
.xml library file, not sure if these are entered into the Slim tag
database but I think so)
-- You make one of the changes above in iTunes
-- SlimServer rescans your iTunes library

What happens to me in this case is that SlimServer will show duplicate
song titles. Inspecting the file info shows that one of these is a
pointer to the original song file/path, which no longer exists. As far
as I could tell, this is what was causing my occasional high CPU usage.
There is a reference to this general scenario in the Troubleshooting
section of the FAQ:

http://www.slimdevices.com/su_faq.html#troubleshooting-lockup

Adding music in iTunes doesn't cause a problem. Creating/changing
playlists doesn't cause a problem. Changing other iTunes song info like
rating, comments, etc. doesn't cause a problem since Slim doesn't
consider these without additional plugins.

So, the safest thing is if you have been doing library management in
iTunes, force a "Clear and rescan library" in SlimServer. Only by doing
this will it remove the broken pointers to non-existent files. With a
big library, it takes a while, so I usually do it before I turn in for
the night.

HTH. I haven't seen this exact discussion before, but that FAQ entry
really helped me sort things out.

[slim] Re: Multiple Library Question (Ape + Ogg)

2006-03-07 Thread verbatone

Hmm, jph and aubuti, thanks for the help so far. I kinda figured
something like this would be the "solution", although I'm still open to
any other options. This seems like it's a feature request, although I'm
not sure how popular it would be and I know a lot of others are waiting
on different features. Basically the feature would be, if two files
have the same file name (minus extension), and tag info
(artist-album-song), prioritize a list. Say flac/ape/Apple-lossless
beats out mp3/aac/ogg/... for a spot in the library, but if a(n)
mp3/aac/ogg/... files exists without a lossless counterpart, include
that file in the library.

There are problems with this, I know, like wav and aiff don't have tag
info, so who wins between say wav and flac? Who wins between ape and
flac? but the general idea would solve this problem.

Awaiting any other solutions...Thanks.

ok. That is entirely possible. But, your subscribed podcasts does not
mean every single podcast that iTunes makes available. When the feature
was created, 6 test podcasts, 3 were non-"podcast" genre. They ARE
however, listed as an iTunes playlist. Until, of course, Apple goes and

I have checked that. I have had a similar problem with another album,
and here it was because of another album with the same name. I solved
that by renaming one of the albums, since the "Common Album Name"

character in the name. I will return to that problem when I have solved

A thing I forgot in the first mail: When I have the duplicate song
entries on the album, one of the duplicates shows no information when

[slim] nicecast, airport extreme and squeezebox 3

2006-03-07 Thread gib

Hi, has anyone got any tips to get this combo working ?

When i enter the local url into the slimserver web gui, it auto
translates to my real ip address.

I assume this is some router issue. I have searched the web and tried
turning on 'Enable NAT port mapping protocol' but with no diff.

When i enter the local address in the slim server it translates to the
real ip of my router and url wont play.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

[slim] Re: Slimserver CPU consumption

2006-03-07 Thread Fred

There is a setting as well that controls how often SlimServer checks for
changes in the iTunes XML file, you may want to increase it. Otherwise
the first change in iTunes triggers a rescan, but since you are still
changing things in iTunes it will start again as soon as the rescan
finishes.

I also think I noticed cases where scanning was in progress despite the
server not mentioning it in the GUI. And this can lead to some issues in
rescan control...

So I would suggest this to get back on tracks, or whenever you do major
iTunes housekeeping:
- Stop slimserver
- Delete caches
- Do whatever you need to do in iTunes, then quit it
- Launch Slimserver
- It will rebuild the DB, this takes some time.

Also make sure that the directory for files set on the server matches
your iTunes library or is empty, otherwise the server sometimes try to
scan both.

With 6.2.1 and a large library, iTunes interfacing is not really
"seamless".

[slim] Re: Why is rescan playlists taking so long?

Also,

I know there is a way for SlimServer to use MusicMagic directly from
the Squeezebox but is there a way to specify that the MusicMagic server
is actually located on a different box? (such as SS on Linkstation and
MMM on a WinXP PC?)

Thanks,
Daniel

The API of the Squeezebox is available. This means you're entirely free
to do or even sell a C++ Windows program "made by pros" to drive the
SqueezeBox. The "amateur hackers" will even answer all your questions
in the Dev forum.

I guess you could try building the playlist on a player (without
playing it) and then save it.

[slim] Re: Why is rescan playlists taking so long?

2006-03-07 Thread agentsmith

I have been having similar problems with slow and sometimes unreliable
scans.

Re-Scanning is generally slow for me since I access the drive from an
NAS.

However I delete and rescan everytime I add songs because often times
the scan only (no delete) option do not register the changes.

It would be really helpful if there is a counter/indicator that shows
how many songs are read, how many changed and how many added etc. Or
something like a % indicator. Also would be helpful if it shows where
it is reading the data from Etc.

I remember in the non GUI days, I see exactly what is going on with
from the command line.

Just need an SB1 + a SliMP3 ... :)

Agreed. That said, I am happy that the iTunes integration works as well
as it does. My wife loves her iPod so this is the best solution for us.
Fortunately (?) I am the one who does the bulk of the ripping and
library management so I just take care of this stuff. She doesn't have
to worry about it.

Perhaps some of this accumulated knowledge should be added to the wiki.
It's not quite as easy as this suggests:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?BeginnersGuideToOrganising

This one doesn't really get into the issues we have discussed:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?BeginnersGuideToiTunes

It may take me a few days to get to it, but I'll try to pull something
together.

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 Skin

2006-03-07 Thread vikmurthy

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369

Question: Do you have a 770?

- Got it
- Want it
- Need it
- Forget it

Ben,

I just wanted to give you a head's up that there may be a small
volume-related glitch in the new AJAX-enabled version of the Nokia 770
skin.

While using the skin today to listen to some music, I found that I was
unable to adjust the volume on the fly from the Now Playing page. It
seemed as if the SqueezeBox wanted to process my request, raising the
volume for a split second but then reverting to the original volume
level even though I had moved up from 3 bars to 4. I repeated this and
found that regardless of high I made the volume on the Now Playing page,
the volume level on the Squeezebox remained constant.

It would be helpful to know if you or others can corroborate this
feedback to see if the problem lies with my specific setup or if it is
in fact a more systemic issue with the skin.

[slim] Re: Now Playing on PLAY key press?

2006-03-07 Thread j . e . f . f

OK thanks.

I usually play an album in its entirety and do not continue to browse,
so I would prefer the now playing screen to come up right away, and
then the VU Meter screen saver to kick in after the set amount of
time.

It's really not a big deal. I was hoping there was an option I had
missed, but I can live with it as is. Like I said in my original post,
I love my squeezebox, and really this is the only complaint I could
possibly make if I was forced at gun point to do so ;)

[slim] Re: Wpa-aes

2006-03-07 Thread jcyr

You mean Slim's lack of WPA2-AES support!!! As far as I can tell
*nobody* has had any success with WPA2/AES. I chose Slim over Roku
because it advertized WPA2/AES support and Roku didn't. The web site
still claims AES support eventhough this problem has been known for
nearly 6 months now, but still no fix!

This is getting ridiculous!!!
