[slim] WEP problems
I have switched my network from WPA to WEP so that I can use a bridge as in my new home the signals don't travel too well. All 3 of my Windows XP SP2 PCs can connect to the internet OK, but my 2 squeezeboxes are showing problems - they end up with odd IP addresses (not the usual 192.168.11.x etc) and cannot find the slimserver on the right PC. Removing all encryption (yikes) solves the problem. Before I switched to WPA everything was fine. I am using Windows XP zero wireless config set to shared and 64-bit WEP. I am using a 5-digit code as the key. It has occurred to me that I might be entering the WEP in the squeezebox incorrectly due to confusion between hex and decimal. If my WEP key is 1 in the Windows XP setup screen, how do I enter this into the setup screen of the squeezebox - is 0101010101 the right approach? Any help much appreciated. [slim] Re: Imerge M1000 - need info - Slimserver compatiable?
I think that box was designed with something different in mind. It's designed to be a music player on its own, with its own soundcard and everything, and it doesn't need (and I think can't use) a Squeezebox. A Squeezebox works off Ethernet or wireless networking. This device does not appear to have an Ethernet port - in fact, the first link you provided indicates it includes a modem port (!) It does have a USB port but then you'd have to keep it permanently connected to a networked PC and keep the networked PC on at all times, which defeats the purpose of the whole thing. It can apparently rip to uncompressed formats, but you lose the bit-perfect error correction you can get with EAC. Finally, in order to load SlimServer on it, you'd have to find hacked 3rd party firmware that will allow loading of other applications. You'd be much better off to get a NAS device that can support SlimServer. The only one possibly available in Australia that can support SlimServer easily is the Infrant ReadyNAS. It's expensive, but probably the same price as that pricey Imerge box. You can load SlimServer on others, like Kurobox and Linksys NSLU2, but those require some Linux knowledge and hacking skills. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22758 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

This song will stay there until I change screens to something else then back to Now Playing. Is this correct, or should the Now Playing screen update automatically? - Dave Dave, I've run into this as well. I think what's happening is that when the 770 goes to power save mode (screen dims or turns off), an additional step it takes is to break the network connection. It's a pity that it does this, but the 770 consumes a lot more power when WiFi is active. When the network connection breaks, it also stops the browser from attempting to refresh. Sorry that's not a solution (which I don't have), but I believe that's what's happening. [slim] Re: Naxos Music Library
It is possible to make an album selection and replay it on a PC which could be your server and redirect this to Slimserver and your Squeezebox. I am redirecting Naxos Radio like this at the moment. You would need to have soemthing like an IceCast Server runing on the PC together with a source client which will redirect a feed from your soundcard into IceCast. You then need to feed the URL of your IceCast feed into the Internet radio tune selection of your Squeezebox and possible save it as a playlist for later. So how do you feed your sound card feed back into IceCast. Well if your PC is Unix then you use a product called Ices2, if it is Windows then the easiest way is to use Winamp with the latest Oddcast plugin. This will allow you to direct the Wav/Mp3 feed from your soundcast mixer into your IceCast Server and onto your Squeezebox. There are other products but I am assuming you want to do this for free! The good news is you can try this all out now with SoftSqueeze before you buy to make sure it suits your needs. The Naxos Music Library will allow you about a 15 minute trial period and this period is renewed each time you reload your browser so it is possible to try this out on a recording with multiple tracks although the trial version will only give you a 64KB rate. It should be possible to write a plugin for SlimServer to do the authenticating and even browse the library but this is not very practical since browsing an 8700 CD library could take you weeks to find the item you need. You will soon find out that the only way to use Naxos Library is to use the search facility to find your CD and then it becomes easy but how you write a Plugin to interface to the search facility is beyond me at the moment. Give it a try and have fun. -- MrStan MrStan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1771 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22728 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Encryption
The only method you should try is WPA-TKIP. WEP is easily crackable in seconds and will deter only accidental connections. And WPA is as easy to use as WEP, it requires no extra effort. Yes, make up your own passphrase, although there are several random passphrase generators out there on the Internet. Don't use anything that would be in a dictionary - the only WPA cracking scheme enters words from a dictionary as passphrases. So make up stuff, misspell, capitalize in the middle of words, add numbers and punctuation. The more characters you enter, the better the security. The limit is 63 characters. Unfortunately entering it into the SB is tedious - it's entered one character at a time using the number buttons like on a cell phone. Also if you get one character wrong, and this is very easy to do, it won't connect without telling you why. Be on the lookout for leading and trailing spaces as well. But the good news is you only have to do this once. The entry survives a power-cycling and is only wiped out on a reset. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22767 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Black Magic Firmware: firmware 37
In case you haven't seen my fairly excited posts yet, this fixed two pretty fundamental issues for me: 1. My old SMC2804WBRP-G wireless router now works perfectly with the SB2/3. No encryption and WPA-TKIP. The router does not support WPA2 and probably never will. I didn't try WEP but since WPA works fine, why bother... 2. My newer Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT firmware 2.3 works perfectly in WPA2/AES mode with the SB. So ironically, I'll stick with the Linksys even though the SMC is working fine! It's Richard's 4th day at Slim Devices. Already a great accomplishment! A round of virtual applause is in order, I think. Just think what he'll accomplish there in a year... I'm hopeful that this resolves other people's problems as well. But all the same, I officially dub firmware 37 The Black Magic Firmware (tm). ;-) -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22774 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Well, how slow is slow? Does it finish? I have 2259 tracks and have just recently started adding artwork. A clear library and rescan everything rescan takes me about 90 seconds. A look for new and changed music rescan takes me about 20 seconds. This is with a P4 2.8 GHz processor running Windows XP SP2. Yes, it is the slowest thing SlimServer does, but reading 1000+ artist, title and genre tags is not going to be fast. Other programs like Mp3tag and foobar2000 choke on this task as well. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22772 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

OK, well this got me curious, and those figures were off the top of my head, so I timed it: Look for new and changed music: 1:06 Clear library and rescan everything: 2:39 (so I was a little optimistic!) But still, based on what it's doing, scanning 2259 items looking for artist, album, title, genre, ReplayGain data, artwork, etc. I don't think this is bad at all. Again, just try Mp3tag or foobar2000 and those take a while to load all this data too. You can see what's going on if you look at your processor load. A Look for new must scan the library looking for recently modified files. It loads my processor up 50-60%. A Clear library scan first conducts a very disk-intensive operation, obviously looking at every file. This loads the processor up 40-50%. Then after a time the disk access ends and the processor loads up 50-60% like in a Look for new scan. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22772 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Can a SqueezeBox control volume of another SB
I would like to know if one SqueezeBox3 can control the volume on another SqueezeBox3. I have a central amplifier in my basement connected to multiple sets of speakers throughout the house. Each set of speakers has an in-wall volume control, but the volume control is limited in its range. I have two issues I would like to solve: (A) I have to go to the basement to change or select music. (B) To completely control volume I need to adjust the room volumes AND either the amplifiers volume or the source to the amplifier. Often the room volume control alone is adequate, but not always. I think I can solve (A) with two SqueezeBox3 devices: one upstairs working with the infrared remote control; and the second attached to the Amplifier (in the basement). The first SqueezeBox3 would only control the second one. Usually I would not have anything attached to the audio outputs of the first SqueezeBox3; it would act as my User Interface. QUESTION: Can I solve issue (B) with this configuration? I think it comes down to this: can one SqueezeBox3 control the volume output of another SqueezeBox3? I dont need to actually control the Amplifiers volume if I can control the SqueezeBox3 output volume remotely from the first SqueezeBox3. Has anyone tried this and been successful? Please let me know. Also, if Ive made any wrong assumptions Id appreciate knowing that too. (Im very technical so I dont think Id have any setup issues if someone told me what needed to be done. I tried to diagnose my slow SlimServer problem in a separate thread. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22351. Although I understand that you cannot tag WAV files, I did tag them with artwork, artist, album, track title, etc. SlimServer recognizes these tags and the artwork. When a song is played, the album cover appears in the now playing information. I also don't think SlimServer is reading the directory structure for tag information because in some cases the artist or track information is different from the directory structure The Beatles appears as Beatles and some of the song titles are different. [slim] Re: Why is scanning so slo-o-o-o-w?
One big problem people can have is that DMA is not turned on. This will dramatically slow down any disk intensive tasks. Win2K has a bug where it sometimes will turn this off for you. Not sure about XP. I had this happen to me after I installed a SATA drive into a Win2K machine, and none of the audio would play well. Found out what it was, enabled DMA, and no more skipping. That said, the rescan function will never be very quick. Every song in your library needs to be accessed by your hard drive. If your disk is fragmented, each fragment of the tag data needs to be accessed. Random Seek Times for hard drives are roughly 10ms, and that's just to position the read head above the data to be read. Reading the data takes time too. The seek overhead for every 100 songs works out to be about a second. So we will never see a 5000 song library rescanned in less than a minute. If you get real bad rescan times, I'd recommend defragging your library with something like Norton's defrag utility (SpeedDisk?) [slim] Re: WAV Tags Slowing Slimserver
If you decide to rip to flac, you can use a tagging program to use the file names to generate the tags, or simply replace all the tag data with blanks, so even if it doesn't work, there's easy ways to get there. There might be some program out there that deals with wav headers, but I'm not aware of any. The .wav standard can be found online, and isn't too hard to understand, so I'm sure someone has written something. Currently I'm using Winamp in my home media system, but I'm thinking about switching over to a Slim setup. [slim] Re: Effect of standby/hibernate on Slim?
Tom, Try reading this thread for preventing Slimserver from going into standby while streaming (did you search the forums?? always first port of call). http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22625 It contains a plugin to prevent PC going into standby while streaming. The plugin has been incorporated into the 6.2.2 and 6.5 builds (so you can just download the latest nightly build to fix this if it is a problem for you). Of course no content can be streamed to your squeezebox if the computer running slimserver is in standby or suspend.. Your squeezebox does have a buffer, so it can continue to play while the slimserver pc is off (or in standby) until it has emptied its internal buffer. -- bigjules bigjules's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4805 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22783 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Noticed something else with this firmware. It's a minor thing, but a nice touch nonetheless. The Now Playing buffer capacity mode shows not only the percentage, but a bar as well. [slim] Re: Palm or Pocket PC
I have been using the T|X for about 6 months as my all-purpose PDA and also use it sometimes as a remote for my SBs. It works fine using the Handheld skin and displays artwork, etc in a fairly snappy way. My only criticism would be the way it handles reconnects to the wireless network. In order to save power it will disconnect from wifi after a period (perhaps 1 minute) of inactivity. This is fine and as it should be. However when you then pick it up and tap on something in the slimserver skin it attempts to reconnect to the wireless but always fails. The work around is to remember to manually initiate a new connection before using the slimserver and although easy to do this is a bit of pain as I often forget and have to sit through a timeout before I can intervene again. My memory is actually that when I first had it this behaviour was different and it would successfully reconnect automatically but I can't be sure. In any case it won't do it now. Myself I am waiting to get my hands on a Nokia 770 to use as a remote. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22742 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Brushed Aliminium Panel coming loose.
I have to say that my Squeezebox 3 has let me rediscover albums that I'd completely forgotten I owned. And I never have to go hunting through my CDs. I dont really want to send it back, cause I use it all day every day. Also.. the dark display cover (plastic bitty at the top) had a few scratches at the bottom (near the brushed aluminium bitty) when I purchased it.. [slim] Stuttering at the biginning of songs, and delay in display updating
I'm wondering if these are known bugs, and what information I need to look at to determine where the problem is, some help with troubleshooting this. I love the whole Slim system, but it's not quite working well enough for me to be completely satisfied. The specific problem that most disrupts my enjoyment of the music is that especially in Random Songs mode, at the beginning of many but not all songs, I'll hear a few seconds, then there will be a few seconds of silence then the rest of the song will play fine. Also I note that the display has a delay in updating to the title of the current track of as long as 15 seconds, this on all songs. Some specifics about my sytem: Server is a Mac G4 400 MHz processor with 704 MB of RAM (Whether this 6 year old computer is too under-powered to Slimserve music and do anything else at the same time is one of my concerns) Mac OS 10.3.9 Slimserver v. 6.2.1 Sqeezebox 3, Firmware v. 28 Server has a wired connection to the wireless access point, and the Squeezebox is connecting wirelessly to the access point about 4 meters away. I live next to a large apartment building, so the WiFi environment is pretty congested, but none of them on the same WiFi channel as me. No encryption currently, though that may change soon. I play mostly flac but some mp3, shn, and ape files. My libray currently has about 19,000 songs, in various folders on various external drives with symbolic links in the music folder pointing to them. I don't really understand anything about interpreting the debugging data, or what particular data I should be looking at. I guess I'm mainly wondering if these are known bugs that have maybe been fixed in the beta versions, or how to determine whether the problem is in my CPU or my network or what. Thanks for any help.
