[slim] Re: Can't connect SB1 to Linksys WRT54G Wirelessly

2006-04-17 Thread kolding

Check that you have it in both 802.11b and 802.11g. I'm not sure what
the default mode is, but it is possible to make the WRT54g work only in
802.11g mode, in which case, the SB1, which only speaks 802.11b, won't
be able to connect at all.

[slim] Can't connect from outside world

2006-04-17 Thread oban

Or rather, I can connect but there is no sound.

I have SlimServer up and running on one of my computers with
IP:192.168.0.3

On another computer with IP:192.168.0.2 I can point Mediaplayer or VLC
to 192.168.0.3:9000/stream.mp3 and listen to my lovely music and select
songs via my browser on 192.168.0.3:9000.

But when I try to connect to my IP from outside my router, it doesn't
work.

I point my player to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:9000/stream.mp3
It says connecting...buffering...and then playing, but there is no
sound.
It also says Welcome to SlimServer.

In my router i have port 9000 and 3483 forwarded to xx.3

What have I missed ???

[slim] Version Histories

2006-04-17 Thread timjon

Hi,

Is there a list anywhere of which features / bugfixes were implemented
in which version of slimserver?

I tried updating from 5.1.1 to 6.2.1, but found a couple of (for me)
showstopping problems, regarding playlist handling and performance. I'm
now idly considering whether I should try one of the interim releases
(5.2, 5.3, 5.4 etc) but I can't find any information on what each of
those releases contained.

Any ideas? Is it worth updating from 5.1.1 to (say) 5.4.1? (It's
looking like v6.X is going to be unusable for me due to performance.)

Cheers,

Tim.

2006-04-17 Thread Daveo

It appears to be failing at trying to establish a connection with the
router, the logs don't show a failed connection as it doesn't appear to
be getting that far! The Wireless router is being used as a DHCP Server
and I've added the complete range into the firewall just to make sure
it isn't that. I've completely reset the router and set it up again,
but still have the same problem.

I have converted our CD collection to FLAC my wife has some concerns

the ease of use. Now I need to now if there is anyway I can convert
these FLAC files to MP3 easily?

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Re: [slim] Ready NAS NV vs. Terastation Pro vs. Terastation vs. ??? (Storage Solution)

2006-04-17 Thread Robin Bowes

 Hi Everybody,

With a music library of 600GB that is still growing, I finally made my
decision to go for a dedicated RAID5/NAS solution to store my files. I
find that handling all those external harddrives is just too much
clutter, and the RAID5 configuration will give some protection against
 hardware failure.

(I know that a a RAID does not protect against data loss due to human
failure, so there will be an additional backup, but I still think that
the additional safety of a RAID makes sense)

So here are my requirements for the NAS storage solution:
 - at least 4 discs, RAID5 configuration
 - works with Mac and PC
 - does not have to be absolutely silent, but quiet would be welcome
 - I don't plan to run SlimServer on the NAS, it will just be used for
 storage
 - use of SATA discs would be welcome for future upgrades

 My options:
 1. Infrant Ready NAS NV: 688 Euro empty + 320 Euro for 4x250GB or 400
Euro for 4x300GB (total price 1088 Euro for 4x300GB config)
 2. Buffalo Terastation Pro: 849 Euro with 4x250GB, not available empty
 (???)
 3. Buffalo Terastation 739 Euro with 4x250GB (P-ATA only!)
 4. ??? please recommend other options ???

If you're anything like technically capable then I would suggest buying
a good quality large case capable of holding several drives either
internally or using 4:3 trays mounted in the 5.25 slots and to build
your own server. This is the most cost-effective way of doing things.

I picked up an old dual 1GHz PIII machine from ebay (in a Coolermaster
case) and loaded it with 6x250GB SATA drives. I'm running linux (Fedora
Core 4) and have the drives configured in RAID5 with a hot spare. If I
was doing this again I'd use RAID6.

In the end, it's a trade off - cost vs. time invested. If you buy and
off-the-shelf NAS solution, it will likely be more expensive but you
will not have to spend much time getting it working. With a custom
solution, it will be cheaper but you'll have to spend time
building/configuring it.

You might like to try the latest 6.2.x nightly release - this is the

[slim] Database Inconsistencies

2006-04-17 Thread danco

I've just been putting FLAC tags on various files, and ran into
difficulties with the database. Seems ok now after various deletions of
database, rescans, etc. All on a small library so that I could check
things easily.

But in the course of doing this I had database inconsistencies quite
frequently, and wondered if this problem was known. Not just with the
database failing to reflect the library, but with data looked at one
way being inconsistent with the same data looked at differently. The
problem seems restricted to flacs, my mp3s seem to show up ok. Also, I
wondered if there was any connection with the issue that some people
have of items in the library not showing in the database.

For instance, I went to Browse Genre, and clicked on the genre Country.
The result I got was 1 song in 1 album by 0 artists, and (since there
were zero artists) nothing showing up underneath this. 1 song in 1
album was correct (all my albums are ripped and tagged as a single
flac) and I had not entered an Artist tag. But this should have shown
up (as happened with a correct database) as 1 song in 1 album by 1
artist, with the entry No Artist. Also, despite nothing appearing
when I clicked on the genre, if I clicked on the Play button for the
genre the album did play.

On another occasion, Browse Genre, and clicking on Blues showed as 2
songs in 2 albums by 1 artist, with the one artist being No Artist.
But when I then clicked on No Artist, instead of it showing 2 songs
in 2 albums it showed as 1 song in 1 album.

All this with SlimServer 6.2.1, Mac OS 10.4.6

Before raising a bug report, upgrade to the latest 6.2.2 candidate build
- this contains all the latest bugfixes to the 6.2 code. (The only
reason it hasn't been released yet is that they're still ironing out a

You could even try the latest 6.5 build. Its still beta code, but its
reliable enough now that I can run it with no problems. This has loads

[slim] Re: Internet Radio - Finding hidden audio stream addresses.

2006-04-17 Thread egd

Hi

I've read this thread and others concerning the use of URLSnooper 2 and
have found it useful for a number of streaming sites. One I don't seem
to be able to solve is streamed audio from
http://www.702.co.za/onair/tunein/tunein.asp. The page in question has
a LISTEN NOW! javascript popup link as follows:
javascript:windowpopupplayer('player.asp','448','375','no') which opens
up windows media player and commences the streaming.

Using URLSnooper I've been able to discern the link as
mms://196.35.64.36/702_16?WMThinning=0

Pasting that link into a browser window or into windows media player
directly commences the audio streaming. For the life of me though, I
cannot get squeezenetwork or slimserver to stream it. Any assistance
would be much appreciated.

opt for an old PC with a RAID controller and a few hard drives rather
than spend weeks troubleshooting what should be a plug-and-play device.
The PC is likely a cheaper option too and you will get substantially
better performance. A key issue with the ReadyNAS products is slow
throughput even across gigabit ethernet. I'm still trying to solve my
throughput issues:7-8kB/sec whereas the same PCs do a server to server
copy at close to 6x faster than that. Infrant support is assisting,
however, if you're thinking user error I'm definitely not the only one
experiencing these and a host of other issues. Look carefully at the
ReadyNAS forum posts before deciding on a course of action.

Re: [slim] Ready NAS NV vs. Terastation Pro vs. Terastation vs. ??? (Storage Solution)

2006-04-17 Thread ron thigpen
I've had a good experience with the ReadyNAS NV. Gives good performance
over GigE. Setup was straightforward. Good feature set.

I did have some networking issues on first setup, but it turned out to
be a problem with my router handling the 'burstiness' of the NAS
traffic. Solution actually turned out to be getting better power to the
router.

I was a bit torn between that and the DIY small box solution. I would
have liked to have the extra horsepower to give the option of running a
better performing SlimServer on the storage box. In the end, I went for
the ease of setup and am happy. I know I would have spent a good deal
of time getting the DIY box configured.

One option you might consider is going with a 3x400GB drive config.
Price should be similar. At the cost of a bit of storage today you'll
get room to grow and one less drive device to fail.

[slim] Re: MLB.com gameday audio on a SqueezeBox?

2006-04-17 Thread slumlord

Amen, to that, Fuzzy. Other baseball fans have told me they'd subscribe
to MLBTV, where you can *watch* feeds of every game, if the price were a
bit lower.

I tell 'em that no matter *how* low the price falls, I will stick with
GameDay audio. There's nothing like listening to a radio broadcast of
a game...it fires your imagination. When I use GameDay Audio I like to
think of my laptop as some amazing transistor radio that can pull in
signals from anywhere! Many of the feeds also include the local
commercials, so they're a fun voyeur aspect when you hear ads talk
about local landmarks that everyone knows about while we listen in.
Also, when Vin Scully talks about Farmer John hotdogs I want to rush
out and buy 'em!

Any idea what the streaming technology is this year? They've used Real
in the past, but I thought I'd read where they'd signed a new deal.
Can't recall who the provider was, or what formats the streams would be
in. That would make a big difference in LOE for the SN.

Looks like WMA.

That's good news as far as SN feasibility.

But bad news for my idea of tuning in via the Nokia 770 with audio out

My NV has been up for over 4 weeks, running SS non-stop. I do not

My neighbor and good friend also has an NV, and his has also been
trouble-free. He is running 4x500, and my HDDs are 4x300.

YMMV

Its a reasonable position. Also consider that with the promotion of

more stable/better than something tagged beta is entirely arbitrary.
The view suggests that, for example 6.2.1 is of higher quality, with
fewer bugs than 6.2.2-beta, when it seems fairly agreed upon that 6.2.1
was released before it was fully cooked (no sleight intended, it just
happens sometimes). 6.2.2 has had a significant amount of work,
resolving bugs found since/known during 6.2.1.

Because the update process is so trivial, and you can revert, consider
giving it a try if resolution of the bug(s) is important to you.

2006-04-17 Thread poyntzj

I have a 1GB Terastation connected to a SlimServer on an old EPIA Eden
based machine. I want the later as I use AlienBBC an awful lot.
The Terastation has been fine for me so far, speed is more than
adequate. - it can happily stream to Slim server, Twonky server (for a
netgear MP101) and video to a machine with no dropouts.

The Pro looks better in a couple of respects - 1 it is easier to swap
disks - they are caddy's whereas the non pro is a complete dismantle.
The Pro also works with ADS whereas the non pro does not.
Mac connectivity is fine as it is a standard SMB connection..

I do backup my data onto an external USB HDD. I have seen a massive
difference in performance in backing up between choosing EXT3 and FAT.
You can read the former natively under OSX, but under windows you will
need an additional driver.

Please don't misinterpret my post. Installation and configuration was a
breeze. And performance is good. This is a very slick product.

It /is/ technology. There is a lot to potentially go wrong, and it has
to get along with other gear. Most of the support threads on the
Infrant forums show good interactions with the company and have happy
endings. In most cases, the fault and the fix seem to be with
associated equipment. In my case, it was the router's fault. Or more
accurately, the router's wall wart's fault. Others have had issues with
bad cabling, NICs, NIC drivers, etc. Just the nature of the beast. For
most users, I'm guessing this is their first foray into GigE.

I give Infrant credit for corralling a host of potential issues and
putting out a highly usable device. And since finishing my setup and
writing some robocopy scripts I've not had a single issue.

[slim] Re: Ready NAS NV vs. Terastation Pro vs. Terastation vs. ??? (Storage Solution)

2006-04-17 Thread JJZolx

I've had a ReadyNAS 600 that I bought without drives last August. I
populated it with four 320GB Western Digital WD3200JD drives, giving me
about 872 GB of RAID5 storage. After some initial strife getting the
drives installed and set up the way I wanted (mostly my own fault) and
one failed drive in the first month, the thing has run pretty much
flawlessly.

I tried running Slim Server on it, but wasn't impressed with the
performance, so canned that idea. I also tried using their included
backup software, but ran into issues, so switched to using NTBackup and
now back up PCs on my network that way. At this point I use the NAS for
absolutely nothing but storage and have all of the included software
services disabled. Performance isn't mindd-boggling, but it's
adequate. Adding a 1000 Gbps switch to my home network helped a lot,
plus I've found the performance of the PC doing the reading or writing
to the NAS plays a large factor.

To give you an idea of up time, my NAS has been shut down exactly
_once_ in the last six months, when I upgraded its firmware in March.
Looking at the logs, it ran continuously from 20-Oct-2005 to
16-Mar-2006. Almost five months without so much as a hiccup.

I think you could successfully use it wirelessly with a USB wireless
adapter, but I'd have two large reservations about doing this:

1) Troubleshooting Slim Server problems, particularly wireless issues
if you use your SB wirelessly, will be compounded by having your
storage connected wirelessly.

2) Library scanning will take a performance hit. While I think the
wireless storage connection will be more than adequate to keep a few
Squeezeboxes fed a music stream, the scanning will be slow. If you
only scan occasionally, this may not be an issue, but if you're like me
and constantly adding new music, you'll want to scan fairly often and
may not like waiting.

[slim] ReadyNAS for Slimserver

2006-04-17 Thread Bruce Prager
Maybe I'm lucky, put I've installed 2 ReadyNAS X6 and they've all been
almost braindead to install.
Their are several models and I'm not aware of that many issues with the
X6 model.

I recommend the X6 model BTW, and once I installed 4 SATA drives, I
plugged it in, waited 4 hours and had a RAID server.

Did the same to second, with same success. On this one, I installed the
Slimserver plugin and copied my FLAC files to the NAS.

Did a rescan and bingo, one Slimserver. Been streaming loseless around
the house to 5 Squeezeboxes for several months without a single
problem. No dropouts, and no throughput issues both to wired and
wireless Squeezeboxes.

File performance to the X6 File server exceeded that of the PC file
server it replaced with 10K SCSI 320 RAID and an Intel gigabit card.

The boxes are plug into one of the higher end 24port gigabit switches.

Each box creates snapshots every 12 hours and back up to each other once
a month.

I've installed these to other people and can certainly recommend them as
a fine good NAS slimserver device.

[slim] The Worst DB Implementation?

2006-04-17 Thread JSonnabend

Ok, this is weird, and I can't think of a single reasonable explanation
for this.

I populate my slimdb database (SQLite) from an external Access DB.
Everything works great, until I start browsing my db through the
SlimServer web interface.

I browse by artist (or search, for that matter) for the artist Clap
Your Hands Say Yeah. I find one album with 12 tracks. Everything is
fine. The next time I browse (or search) over to that album, -there
are only 11 tracks-. The first track no longer appears with the album.
Surf over again, -now there are only 10 tracks-. Tracks 1 and 2 have
disappeared.

What's up with this? Anyone else see this?

[slim] How to play SlimServer library on a computer

Why are you importing it instead of letting the server build it? It's a

If it sees things it doesn't like in a record (it certainly does this

[slim] Re: FLAC to MP3

2006-04-17 Thread m1abrams

It will drain battery life more than compressed music.

Reason, more harddrive access. A FLAC file will have the harddrive
spinning longer than an mp3 file that is smaller.

Because of this, pretty much any player will suffer reduced battery
life for playing lossless over a lossy format (given the lossy
compresses to a smaller file size).

Above is regarding HD based devices. Not sure about flash. However
4GB of FLAC is almost not worth the effort ;)

edit: Also I briefly looked into rockbox for my 4G iPod. From what I
was reading it seems that tag based browsing is poorly supported and
favors file based browsing, which is just not an option for me.

[slim] Re: FLAC to MP3

2006-04-17 Thread bbb

Not sacrilegious at all; merely practical. You have done the right thing
by starting with flac, though, as that means you will always have a
digital lossless 'master' copy that can be used as the source for
whatever other digital music formats may become popular, without having
to rip everything all over again (as described here:
http://blog.tomtebo.org/programming/flac2mp3_py.html).

There are different programs available depending on whether your
slimserver machine is running on Windows, Mac or Linux, and in fact
there are a number of scripts that will do the job. I've tried a few,
and the one that works best for me is one written by Robin Bowes:
https://projects.robinbowes.com/projects/flac2mp3.

I personally have my CDs all ripped to flac on my Linux (Debian) box,
then I convert them to MP3 for use on my iPod using Robin Bowes perl
script. Assuming your FLAC files are in good shape (i.e., they include
tags), this is probably all you need. It is very easy to use; running
the command flac2mp3 flac mp3 looks in the directory 'flac' and
converts all the FLAC files it finds into MP3 files in the directory
'mp3', recreating all subdirectories as needed, to create a mirror of
your FLAC files in MP3 format. Simple, works great, should run on
Windows, Linux, or Mac, as it is a perl script (like SlimServer
itself).

I have something in the neighbourhood of 500 CDs ripped to FLAC.
Converting them to MP3 was just a matter of time; it is not fast (at
least not on the 700Mhz machine that holds my music collection), but
you just run the script, leave it for the weekend, and you'll have all
your FLAC files converted to MP3. After that, just run the script again
whenever you add a new CD or change a tag, and it updates your MP3s.
Whenever you run it, it checks to see whether the MP3 file already
exists, and if so goes on to the next, so updates are relatively quick
(a new CD takes about 1/2 an hour to be encoded on my machine).

2006-04-17 Thread JSonnabend

I'm copying over rather than letting it scan my tracks because my tracks
aren't tagged, but I do have a complete, centrally managed, clean db
with all my track information.

As for the notion that it's somehow difficult to populate a
relational database, that's just not true. This isn't a particularly
complicated schema, and there's should be no reason why one can't
manually build the db.

In any event, it seems that the tracks are disappearing, SlimServer is
renaming the tracks. So track 1, which was some song title From
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah becomes Clap
Your Hands Say Yeah - some song title on Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
Why is SlimServer renaming the tracks in the db?

[slim] Re: The Worst DB Implementation?

2006-04-17 Thread azinck3

I believe that when you play the track slimserver attempts to actually
read the tags at that point to try to maintain accurate DB info. Your
tags don't exist so it uses it's guess tags feature to attempt to
discern the appropriate tag info from your directory structure and
filenames. It then updates its database to reflect the results of its
guess, thus resulting in the info you're seeing.

Why is SlimServer renaming the tracks in the db?

becuase slimserver believes the file is not yet scanned, so scans for
metadata and populates the db with its data. Given that you don't
have tags, then what you have is probably the result of the guessTags
function. Try going into server settings and deleting all of the
guess tags options.

Thanks for the info. I was starting to think this might be the case.

How do I turn off the guess the tags feature (or, for that matter,
the update the DB with the best info feature)? I'll twiddle with the
Perl code, if need be.

that's odd, but 0 should fail to match anything. Thinking about
this more, the server will probably end up with the plain filename.
Unfortunately, populating the db from an outside source just isn't a
supported function. I can't even think of a simple place in the code
where you could short-circuit the data updates. Perhaps have a look
in Datastores/DBI/DBIStore and block any of the writes to the db. You
may find that there is some data missing, which could be part of the
trigger for the updates.

Also, if you are running on windows, you'll have to install ActivePerl
and run slimserver.pl, instead of slim.exe for your changes to take
effect.

[slim] Help: cannot connect to ethernet network

2006-04-17 Thread Dave

I've just upgraded my SB1 for an ebay-SB2. However, the SB2 does not get
a proper IP through my WRT54G's DHCP-server when using a wired
connection. Also assigning a static IP does not connect the squeezebox
with my network. In wireless-mode the squeezebox works fine.

I've searched through the forums and tried pretty much everything that
might help: resetting, upgrading firmware of SB, upgrading firmware of
router,...

Also I might add that my SB1 worked flawlessly in wired mode.

Please, could anyone help me find a solution?

[slim] Re: Mindless scrolling of display on SB2

2006-04-17 Thread Fedder

Due to rearangement of our furniture the Squezebox is now connected to
another switch on my LAN, and the issue has almost disappeared.
Sometimes the Squezebox does scroll a line or two after releasing the
button on the remote, but that is definately tolerable behaviour.

One must assume that it was some kind of weird interference between the
particular switch and the Squeezebox, that triggered some packets to be
duplicated.

I'd still like to see a reference document on the protocol between the
Squeezebox and the Slimserver to learn a little more about the possible
causes of this problem.

2006-04-17 Thread Ross L

Sorry for the frustrations! Can you please try deleting EVERYTHING in
C:\program files\slim server. After ensuring that is all removed,
please download the latest nightly build of slim server 6.2.2 from:

http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/6.2.2/

Please make sure your music folder does NOT contain any .pls or .lnk
files, I'd suggest searching with the windows search utility for *.pls,
*.lnk within the directory where you are referencing slim server for
your music.

Now install slim server, please point it to your music library and
click rescan. This next step is important, just walk away! Once you hit
rescan, don't touch the computer. Give it an hour, and try it out again.

Post here and let us know how it goes!

Getting back to responding. You covered most of them, so I'll delete and
only include ones you asked for a response. Thanks again for all this
hard work!

bklaas Wrote:
thanks for all of the ideas. I'll respond to them one at a time...

 4) If click on Squeezebox's Playlist when it's empty, the image is not
 sized correctly - scrolls right.

 what image? Need more info...

*** I can't recreate what she descriped. What she described wasn't the
image, it was the entire window with whitespace next to the skin. But
 as I said, I can't recreate it.

 5) If click on a Squeezebox's Playlist when it's full of songs, there
are not icons for Play, Move Up, Move Down, Next, Remove, etc. Looks
like text box image place holders? These basically split the screen in
half and causes songs to wrap. The functionality is great!

I've seen this under certain circumstances, and I can tell you it's an
issue with the Opera browser and not the skin per se. I don't know how
I can fix this, but I will see if there's anyway of preloading images
into opera's cache (esp. ones that are used repeatedly throughout a
 page like these)

 workarounds:
configure slimserver through server settings to not display as many
 items/page.
hit the playlist icon a second time when you see this and the images
may load on the page refresh.

*** See some recent posts about images. Will try today's nightly.

 6) Does not appear to be ability to delete a playlist? Typical
situation is when I do a playlist rescan, it pulls playlists from
iTunes I don't want so I go in to delete them from Slimserver. It's in
the default skin with a second confirmation step.

How is clear playlist different than delete playlist?

*** If I understand, clear a playlist clears the contents of a
squeezebox's playlist. Delete a playlist actually deletes it from the
slimserver console so it never shows up again in browse playlists.

2006-04-17 Thread bpa

The upgrade procedure will depend somewhat on what OS are you using and
what version of AlienBBC ?

If you are using Windows, you could upgrade to AlienBBC 1.01 at the
same time as the install procedure is a lot better now but if you have
any custom Alienstream lists they should be saved.

For Linux you should be able to minimise the effort by saving and then
restoring the Alien folder but this may depend on the AlienBBC version.

Re: [slim] Re: MLB.com gameday audio on a SqueezeBox?

2006-04-17 Thread Jack Coates

I voted for this as well. Radio (audio) is the best way to enjoy
baseball. This would be a fantastic enhancement, and a sure way to sell
 some Squeezeboxes to baseball fans.

 --rt

I actually would rather see an FM tuner with timeshifting -- think Tivo
for radio. This is obviously a server-side app, not an addition to the SB.

MLB is a draw, but only local, and there are also a ton of other local
radio shows/resources that I or my wife want to hear. I've tried a number
of different solutions, but ended up just providing a tabletop radio next
to the SB in many rooms.

It seems so inefficient to stream the same data over the Internet when
it's passing by in the air...

That makes it sound like an IP address conflict.

You say you only have one DHCP server, your router. Have you checked
your DSL/cable modem though? They are often set up as DHCP servers as
well and if you have two DHCP servers on your network, weirdness
results.

Could you list your network devices by IP address? I'd be particularly
interested to see where your DHCP pool stops, i.e. the address of your
working SB3. I assume when you swap SBs around, this is the address
that the working one is always using and that the non-working one is
trying to use the next address in the pool which causes everything to
screech to a halt.

That next address - is there another device on the network using that
address? Do you have enough addresses in your DHCP pool? Will a
computer work when you statically assign it the problematic address?
(I bet not.)

It would help to know what platform you're on, but assuming it's

- squeezeslave, probably partnered with a front-end like Moose

BTW, streaming to http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3 does work, but it's
