Re: [slim] No Automatic Startup

2006-09-25 Thread Michael Herger

Will a clean install of 6.5 fix this?

I'd imagine yes. If you once installed with the automatic startup feature,
updates possibly just replace the files, but don't change the service
setting.

Although I'm willing to try. I followed the instructions here:

http://losslessaudio.blogspot.com/2005/12/media-center-edition-2005-with-flac.html

And FLAC stuff appears where I'd expect, has read-write metadata, and
appears to play back properly in WMP 11. Promising so far; I need to
think out some other details before I go any further, though.

[slim] How would you like to browse your music ?

2006-09-25 Thread erland

I'm looking for ideas of new type of browse menus to include with the
Custom Browse plugin. So I would like to get some ideas of different
ways you would like to browse your music that is not possible with the
current version of slimserver.

Try to include a menu hierarchy example in your idea to make it easier
to understand how you would like it to work, for example:

Genres
- (List of genres)
-- (List of artists within the selected genre)
--- (List of albums for selected artist within selected genre)
(List of tracks on selected album, artist and genre)

So how would you like to browse your music ?

Open source is fine, when it's an active project. But dead open source
projects, not so much. CoreFLAC is at version 0.4, hasn't been updated
in two years, and has open bugs since 2004 (including little things
like not being able to drag the position bar without crashing WMP).
Illiminable is at 0.72, has a changelog that's full of critical issues
("fixed crash problem with x", "fixed crash problem with y", "fixed out
of memory problem with z"), had a year between releases, and then hasn't
had any release in the last seven months.

I know what production quality open source projects look like, and
those aren't it.

Don't go criticising open source around here ;) There's actually a
couple of WMP plugins for FLAC - illiminable and CoreFLAC. As far as I
know both are usually pretty stable, I've certainly used them in the
past without problems. Drop me a PM if you need any help with them.

Of course MS could write a nice, closed source version themselves, but
that would be too helpful :)

[slim] No Automatic Startup

2006-09-25 Thread Mr_Smiley

I use the iTunes rating plugins that require slimserver to run as an app
not a service. Over the last couple of upgrades (not up to 6.5 yet) of
continually checked the option to start slimserver manually, not
automatically at start up. It doesn't work though. It still starts up
and I have to end the slim.exe process so I can start it again. Anybody

Well I did the clean install and once again it is trying to guess tags
from my directory structure for about half my songs. These songs have
good tags — they are the same songs that have been in my library since
before I had a SlimServer!

Since it was a clean install, it put back the settings for guessing
tags. I removed it and tried clear and rescan again, but it is just
continuing on with the original scan. Is there any way to stop the scan
and start a new one?

That's what people told me before, too. And then it turns out that the

[slim] Slimserver not running

2006-09-25 Thread kuzcobd

Some users have reported problems about Slimtray not starting
Slimserver. I just ran into the same problem. I am a newcomer to
SlimDevices. I downloaded and installed 6.3, and got Slimtray saying
forever that it is starting Slimserver. Uninstall and reinstall as
suggested in some posts. Same problem. Moving to 6.5b. Same problem
again.

It turns out that Slimserver was running perfectly when launched
manually from a command window. Still it could not be started manually
as a service.

Two evenings later, the solution to that problem was to change the
status of slimserver as a service from belonging to Local System to
belonging to a user with administration privileges. Doing that makes
everything work perfectly and Slimserver starts automatically at
Windows start-up.

I have Windows XP with the latest security patches and I suspect that
recent changes to the security strategy forbid Slimserver to start as a
Local System service.

In hope that will be useful and help spare some time.

[slim] Scanning problem (6.5.0)

2006-09-25 Thread Nikk0

I have around 22.000 songs and 1600 albums in my library.

As I installed the latest 7.0a nightly yesterday and did a
wipe-and-rescan as always, I noticed that the scan stalled at around
4000 songs. More rescans produced wildy varying results, between 3000
and 7000 songs, but still far away from the entire library.

I uninstalled 7.0a1 and reverted to 6.5.0, to no avail -- still stuck
around 4K songs after a wipe-and-rescan.

Since I add albums to my libray almost daily and had been using 6.5.0
for a few days (and various nightlies before that) without a problem, I
figured the issue was in my library somehow. I moved the last few days'
worth of mp3s outside of the library and did a full rescan -- same
problem.

I'm not too sure which variables to check in the Debugging settings to
find out where the scanning process chokes -- I tried d_scan and
d_info, but the log is barely a few lines long with nothing suspicious
as far as I can tell.

Any ideas?

For a moment I thought this might apply, as the folder names do
(largely) reflect the artist names before I flipped the surname to the
front. However, not only are plenty other tags reported by SongInfo in
SS (including ReplayGain), but it also reports the tag version as
ID3v2.3.0. (OK, so it actually says "ID3 Tag Version:...", which
doesn't exactly say that there aren't non-ID3 tags in there...)

To add a bit more info: SS reports both Artist and Band/Orchestra tags,
both with value "Anouar Brahem". MM says that Artist and AlbumArtist are
both "Brahem, Anouar", and (I'm fairly sure, details not to hand right
now) that it claims to be reporting ID3v2 tags. Hmm. I'll have to see
what DBPowerAmp says...

Thanks for the suggestion Ben, though I might've expected MM to report

themselves haven't changed, only the version of SS.

I'm running XP, not linux; I might have a cygwin installation on that

Thanks for replying aubuti,
Thought that some things may be a design intention
Turning off artwork would be useful though - I thought that it made a
huge impact on the database keeping track of the artwork such that
large libraries could grind to a halt with artwork (irrespective of
image size - as it is the database links that hit performance)?

[slim] build playlist while browsing music?

2006-09-25 Thread Greg Klanderman
Hi,

Is there some convenient way to build a playlist while browsing music?
>From the player interface, the standard way of creating a playlist
seems to be to browse around and hit the "+" button to add to the "Now
Playing" playlist. The downsides to this are that one wrong button
press can wipe out all your work (hitting play for example), and that
you cannot preview songs before deciding to add them.

Seems like you want to be able to browse around like normal, and have
a button which adds to a *separate* playlist. Does this exist?

I see the "add to favorites" but it doesn't look like it's intended
for this given the favorites are stored in the prefs file. There's
also the "zapped songs" playlist, but that seems to only come into
play from "Now Playing", is that right?

thanks,
Greg

No, the gallery view is an alternative to the list view that you can
optionally use when you have a page full of albums. It's not a
seperate browse mode.

Go into browse Albums and click the icon in the upper right of the
browse window, next to the "Sort By" dropdown box. It's also there if
you browse Artists, then select an artist.

A few questions, if you don't mind. I'm also using ClarkConnect. I'm
currently running SS 6.2.2, and would like to try 6.5.0

Right now I do not have the MySQL service running on ClarkConnect. It
is installed, but set to manual startup. Do I need to have MySQL
running on ClarkConnect, or does 6.5 install its own version of MySQL
and start it?

Did you simply do an RPM -e to uninstall Slimserver? And a RPM -i to
install 6.5?

Michael, you and I have corresponded about this one before. I think
we're both trying to solve the same problem. Note the "stateful

In our house the issue is not so much personas, as the different kinds
of music we play depending on who is around - since we have varying
tastes. My 23 year old daughter and I have very similar tastes which
are very broad and eclectic - which we meet with two playlists, one
with lots of jazz on it, the other without (but all the rock, soul,
R&B, alt-folk, and such still there).

Then when my wife is around, we switch to a much more limited playlist
without anything she finds "raucous" (about 50% of what I like!). And
then there are the classical, dinner-music, music-to-study-by, and
Broadway musical playlists (which we generally play shuffled by album
instead of song).

The problem: each time we switch between these various lists,
SlimServer "forgets" where it was before, when we later come back to
the same list.

So it would be great to have a "Remember state" option to turn on for
each list, so that when you switch away to a different list, it would
automatically save that list in its current exact state - shuffle
order, what's already been played, etc. - so when you switch back to it
later (when my wife leaves!) you're back where you were before.

That would mean you wouldn't have to listen to the same song again the
same day just because you switched out of the list and back in again,
which today causes a full reshuffle and loss of state.

It's not that I mind hearing certain things twice - a little Miles is
nice - but to hear Carpenters' "Only Yesterday" more than once in a
week is a tad much to take...

The gaps are not that short (are we talking microseconds or cloth
ears?) and they are very annoying. Many other players support this and
SlimServer should too. Unfortunately migrating away from SlimServer is
not that easy as nothing else quite does the trick... and perhaps this
is why people are so eager to get their particular problems sorted.

I only use one "folder.jpg" file for each album. Most of the them are
300x300, some are 475x475 and even 500x500. Normally, Slimserver is
supposed to generate the thumbnails itself.

But there doesn't seem to be any correlation between the size of my
album art files and the 'disappearing act" some of them are pulling of.
Someone linked to a bug report earlier, and it said that the problem
occurs after modifying tags. And that's exactly what happened to me.

I agree with the previous poster.

As long as you do a complete un-install of your previous version, 6.5
installs and runs fine. MOST of the issues I've seen seem to stem from
"previous version poisoning", and also people who are using the more
advanced features or have lots of plugins.

There's enough "new goodness" there to make it worth your while.

2006-09-25 Thread eamon

To get AAC working in 6.3.1 (on Gentoo) I had used the older version of
faad2 from the CVS repo and compiled and installed it. Modified the
convert.conf file (changes to slimserver-convert.conf or
custom-convert.conf didn't seem to make much difference). Everything
seemed to go fine.

However, new machine, different OS. The CVS trick isn't working for
faad2, as now it fails to compile.

Here are the steps I have taken to get it working in the past, that
fail now:

## Begin Paste #
1. Build/install faad2 as per:
http://robinbowes.com/article.php/2004080319394853

Here's what I did to build a version of faad2 that can sucessfully play
.m4a files from slimserver on my Linux system (Fedora Core 2):
CVSROOT=:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/faac
export CVSROOT
cvs login

(Hit return when prompted for a password)

cvs co -D2004-03-03 -dfaad2-CVS faad2
cd faad2-CVS
autoreconf -vif
./configure --prefix=/usr --with-mp4v2

sudo make install

The "make" fails with the following errors:

I don't think anything except apple hardware directly supports ALAC,
the rest all support via transcoding on the PC, using either
quicktime or that reverse-engineered decoder (which has to play
catch-up when the format changes).

This brings us offtopic, but anyhow, I do use exact same application,

The change isn't in a nightly, as it is only posted to the bug report.
When the changes make it into a nightly, you'll get a notification
from bugzilla that mentions the revision levels and that the bug is
fixed.

Making changes on your local copy will work, but ONLY if you run
slimserver.pl. Slim.EXE (aka the installed service) is pre-packaged
so that all core modules are already part of the EXE. Only changes in
Plugins will have any effect.

In order to run slimserver.pl, you can install ActiveState's

[slim] Re: sleep function with SlimServer 6.5.0

2006-09-25 Thread edc1

The bug report I setup has an update on it now. It changes the following
line in Slim/Buttons/Common.pm:

my @sleepChoices = $remaining ? (0, $remaining, 15,30,45,60,90) :
(0,15,30,45,60,90);

to read:

my @sleepChoices = $remaining ? sort(0, $remaining, 15,30,45,60,90) :
(0,15,30,45,60,90);

so that the sleep time options are numerically ordered.

Rather than downloading a nightly build of Slim Server I thought I'd be
able to put this change into Slim/Buttons/Common.pm on my Slim Server

Does this refer to a fast-forward or rewind issue, or the fact that you
can't play your Ogg files at all? If the latter, check the encoder
version that was used to encode your Ogg file. Any pre-1.0 beta
versions of oggenc probably won't work, and you'll need to re-encode
using a non-beta encoder. Or, uncheck the Ogg (built-in) item and you
can transcode to FLAC.

Sue - to start from scratch:

Open task manager, and make sure that the following processes are not
running. If they are, stop them.

slim.exe
scanner.exe
mysqld.exe

Once that's done, remove SlimServer via the Add/Remove Programs Control
Panel.

If that doesn't work (or in addition to), remove the C:\Program
Files\SlimServer directory.

Just to be safe, reboot.

At that point, SlimServer is completely removed. There is a registry
entry for the service, but that won't affect these scanning issues you
are seeing.

2006-09-25 Thread MahlerFreak

For me, another factor with the Sonos is that their controller controls
Sonos gear only. So if, like me, you have a multi-component playback
system controlled from a single device through NetRemote or Charmed
Quark or similar, you have no way to integrate that slick music
browsing experience with the rest of your system control. Web-based UI
will integrate with almost anything.

And of course, just like SlimServer, the Sonos provides almost no
classical-friendly browsing features.

Yes, that's exactly what could be done (although the volume adjustment

If they do that, I want a(nother) free pony. ;)

FWIW, as the person probably most familiar with the Nokia 770 as a
slimserver remote-- if you did a side-by-side demo of the 770
controlling a squeezebox and a Sonos remote controlling a Sonos, I'd
have to guess the user experience would go hands down to Sonos. To me,
the principal reason for this is that the 770 is a first-gen device
that still has some quirks. That said, it's a reasonable alternative to
the Sonos, allows you to use the (IMO) superior squeezebox/slimserver,
and I can promise that I'm dedicated to building on the Nokia770 skin's
UI (as well as the Touch skin, now largely under my stewardship).

One of the great selling points, to me, of the Slimdevices software
model is allowing average schmoes like myself to contribute original
ideas/interfaces to the user experience. Sonos might have put a ton of
$$ into developing an proprietary solution, and give them their
due--it's a sharp looking solution-- but I'd be bummed if my only
outlet to changing/enhancing a feature to the product would be asking
the company to fix it. With Slim, I can actually fix it myself.

I know not everyone can/wants to interact with a company in that
fashion (what? I paid for this thing, and now you want me to work on
it???), but isn't it cool that there is an organically assembled bunch
of open-source developers tinkering with this thing and enhancing its
feature list?

I use the Nokia 770 for two main things now (though it can do so much
more): as a slimserver remote, and to make phone calls using Gizmo
Project. I don't recommend using a Sonos remote for making phone calls
;)

cheers,
#!/ben

[slim] How to start clean with 6.5? My library is hosed.

2006-09-25 Thread MeSue

Is deleting the SlimServer directory in Program Files all I need to do
for a truly clean install of 6.5? Are there registry entries too?

Because I have been trying to get a usable scan of my library for three
days now and each rescan results in new oddities. At first there were a
lot of weird things in my library and the scans would go for hours ad
hour without ever finishing.

Yesterday I tried the uninstall through Add/Remove Programs and it got
stuck in some kind of loop where an error was popping up in a command
line window and then disappearing over and over. I had to go into task
manager and kill the process for some temp file to finally get it to
stop. Then I deleted the SlimServer directory, waited for the rescan,
and my library was all hosed with things like multiple repeats of an
Artists name in the Albums list, split Albums, Artists listed as MP3,
Albums listed as CD1.

So then I removed the music library and playlist paths and rescanned
with just MusicMagic enabled. Well, it got better, but I still had
duplicate albums.

Giving up for the night, I decided to just create a mix in MusicIP and
send it to Slimserver from the MIP UI. When I refreshed my playlist in
SlimServer, it was listed several wrong songs. But when I played the
playlist, the songs were the right ones. In other words, the Web UI and
player were showing different information from what was actually
playing!

Throughout all this, I have not once gotten it to show anything but
placeholders in the gallery views, although I have album are in the Web
Now playing section and in the song info.

At this point I have removed MusicMagic from the picture and I'm
rescanning for about the 10th time with only my music path. So far it
does not look good, but I will wait to see if things fall into place
when it finished. It seems as if SlimServer is just ignoring my real
tags (the same tags that were read fine in earlier versions) and using
the "Guess tags" info which is not working well at all. Is there some
way to disable the guessing of tags entirely?

If not I am not sure what else to try unless there is more to clean
install besides blowing away the program directory.

Can anyone help or should I just go back to 6.3.1?

No, slimserver doesn't have any support for calculating volume
adjustments itself, it can only go on tags already in the files. As for
adding them during transcoding, it's all done in realtime so there's not
really an opportunity to prescan the file. Sorry!

FF/REW doesn't work because there's no way for slimserver to tell the
external decoder to speed up or start going backwards - it's just
reading a stream of data coming in and passing it to the player.

I wouldn't think the change to add support for the WMA volume tags
would be particularly tough, so it's probably worth opening an
enhancement request.

The JRMC plugin will not support MCE, although the architecture is
designed to be ported to other music libraries. MCE is not all that
interesting to me in that it seems to support only the same limited
Genre/Album/Artist/Song view that most music libraries do. JRMC was my
first target because it at least allows for user-defined fields (tags)
in libraries, thus allowing me to define real schemas for classical,
opera, jazz, and other genres that don't neatly fit the pop-oriented
world view of iTunes, MCE, SlimServer, et al.

You might want to experiment a bit more with WMP11's naughty DRM ways before getting too tight with it: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=34523
I don't use it so I can't say if that article is being overly alarmist, but the trend of behavior in WMP and iTunes is quite clear, and I don't think it's going to reach steady-state against consumer pushback at a point that I'm comfortable with.

The UPNP support in slimserver is to allow it to act as a client. So if
you're running slimserver you can browse and play tracks from another
UPNP server on your network. But the players themselves have no
knowledge of UPNP so you do still need to have slimserver running.

For those who like to live on the bleeding edge, RockBox
(www.rockbox.org) offers an alternate, reversible firmware solution
that allows your iPod (and several other players) to play FLAC files
amongst other things. At present it is not quite as intuitive as the
standard iPod functionality, but it's better than several players I've
tried.

I have most of my files in FLAC on the server and getting music on to
the iPod is simply a matter of mounting the iPod disk and copying the
folders across. RockBox builds a tag database allowing search
facilities and the playback quality, thanks to lossless coding, is
excellent.

On the subject of lossless formats: they're the realtime audio
equivalent of Zip and Stuffit - what you get out is exactly,
bit-for-bit, what you put in (otherwise it wouldn't be "lossless"). The
penalty is somewhat larger files than perceptual coding produces. I am
not aware of FLAC (for example) coding putting a bigger load on a
playback device than any other codec: in fact you might expect the
opposite to be true as FLAC files are not as highly compressed.

When using the DISCC/DISCNUMBER tags there is no need to have all tracks
numbered contiguously. Tracks on the second disc can start with 1 again.
Slimserver orders them correctly (DISCNUMBER, TRACKNUMBER).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but SqueezeBox does *not* have hardware
support for ALAC. It needs to be transcoded to something else (FLAC,
MP3, WAV) on the server before being streamed to the SB. And it's
precisely because the SB supports FLAC (plus AIFF, WAV, MP3, Ogg
Vorbis, and WMA lossy) natively that you can ff/rew tracks in that
format but not in ALAC. For you those disadvantages of ALAC compared
to AIFF might well be outweighed by the advantages of ALAC.

For a listing of what formats SB supports natively, see:

I'm pretty sure that the supported devices are through UPnP (Universal
Plug and Play). It appears that some level of UPnP support has been
added to the latest slimserver (see the Release Notes for v6.5.0), but
I haven't been following (a) exactly what level of support that is, or
(b) what SD's plans are in this direction.

Apart from the FF/Rwd issue (does that affect FLAC as well?) I cannot
see any disadvantage to using ALAC over AIFF. ALAC is supported by all
the major hardware devices (SqueezeBox, Sonos ZonePlayer, Roku
SoundBridge via FireFly, and of course iPod!). It is possible to use it
in WinAmp and I even have it working in WMP 10 and Media Center 2005!

ALAC uses the MPEG4 container format and therefore the same tag format
as AAC. This means it has good tag support by applications, unlike AIFF
which while iTunes supports AIFF fully most other applications (e.g.
WMP) do not, as you said WAV is useless in terms of tagging.

ALAC, AIFF, WAV, and FLAC should all be the same audio quality.

[slim] Re: Duplicate Albums

2006-09-25 Thread chris . mason

This is now working for me:

I happen to have my compilation albums (where there are multiple
artists) grouped under a directory called "Various Artists" then the
album name, otherwise all albums are grouped under the artist name.

For all compilation albums, each track has the tag "Compilation", which
is set to "1".

For albums that are multi-disk, I added:
Discc=
Discnumber=

I have "group compilations albums together" AND "Treat multi-disk
albums as one album". I did a complete re-scan and hey presto
everything is working as it should be: you get one entry for a multi
disk album, which when selected lists all the tracks from all the discs
in set.

Chris.
