In a word, no - sounds pretty dangerous to me! You might instead want
to consider using the zap feature which adds the song to a special
zapped list which you can deal with later (I think there is a plugin
which will stop zapped files playing).

2007-01-29 Thread Michael Herger

1. *How do you select which music to play today ?* (Browse, Search,
Random, Smart playlists, other?)

1. by album (browse)
2. favorite (radio station)
3. Random Mix
4. MIP based on some song I like (browse to song - MIP)
...
. using a pre-defined playlist

- Do only like to use browsing functions or only search functions or
both ?

Almost browse only. Search only for questions like didn't we have that
song (of which I don't know where it's published). I guess I know my
collection too well. Will have to buy more music :-)

[slim] Re: Delete File from Library Via Remote?

2007-01-29 Thread GeorgeE12

Thanks. Yeah I know it's dangerous, but it would save me a lot of
niggling work. I've got several thousand songs I want to go through
and I don't know if I want them in my library or not.

I don't see how it could be that dangerous if it was a menu option that
you had to specifically navigate to, especially if it had an are you
sure option. Anything would be better than walking over to the
computer for each song I want to delete.

Because, I'd like to, you know, actually be listening to the songs
through the squeezebox, rather than turn it into a task that I have to
sit at a computer for.

And I would use the zapped playlist, but that thing always seems to
mysteriously disappear on me. I have no idea what the trigger for that
is -- does it get recleared on a server restart? A playlist change?
Who knows. But, if I take the trouble to listen to 2000 songs and
select 500 for later deletion, I sure as hell don't want to take a
chance and lose all that work. So I'm not taking a chance on zapped,
thank you very much though.

[slim] Re: How would you like to select which music to play ?

2007-01-29 Thread ceejay

hi erland - thats a lot of questions in one go! But what the heck, lets
try...

The first thing I'd say is that it's really important for me to be able
to choose music in any of several different ways.

1 - most often, I browse by artist, or sometimes by genre then artist
(I have multiple genre values on my music) for an album and play the
album as intended. Sometimes, to pick an artist, I press one of the
number buttons to be taken to a random place in the list (so I'm not
always starting at A) and scroll from here till I find something I
like.

2 - slightly less often, I think I want to listen to X and then use
either search or browse to find it (LazySearch works well if I'm not
absolutely sure of the details, otherwise I just browse to it).

3 - occasionally I want the system to choose for me in which case I
usually use LastFM. Occasionally I might use a randomplay list from a
genre. In these cases I'm listening to tracks rather than albums. This
is quite rare for me.

4 - I have almost no use for static or dynamic playlists. I do have an
audition playlist which is my preferred reference list of music to
listen to when I'm checking out a change to my stereo, but that's it.

As Michael said, Search mostly gets used for answering questions (have
we got this track? how many versions of it? who sang that song?).

Some but not all of the music I listen to is classical: in this case
options 1 and 2 work but not very well due to SS's limitations in
dealing with classical music, and 3 is irrelevant.

For nonclassical, what would improve my listening would be something
that made option 1 more effective at leading me to places I might be
missing. I suppose a list of the albums that haven't been played
recently would be a start (I know I could do that with your plugins!)
but it would be a pain if you got the same list every time, because
there is probably a good reason why those albums haven't been played!
Filtering this list by Genre would be good.

Maybe what I want is give me a list of 20 albums from this genre which
haven't been played recently and which weren't on the list offered last
time I asked this question!

Just my 2p worth

Re: [slim] Can anyone recommend headphones?

2007-01-29 Thread Kevin O. Lepard

Could anyone recommend some good headphones? They will be for use at
work to listen to music streamed directly from my PC. It is important
that they aren't leaky - I don't want to annoy my colleagues.

I have a pair of Etymotic ER-4Ps that I think are great. They
provide 20 to 25 db of acoustic isolation so you can listen to your
music at reasonable levels in relatively noisy environments. They
are in-canal earphones, though, which I know not everyone likes.

Also, if you're at work using them, you're not going to hear the
people around you if someone phones, talks to you, etc. very well.

Lots of good info is at http://www.head-fi.org

[slim] Re: How would you like to select which music to play ?

2007-01-29 Thread davep

Erland,
My best answer would probably be all of the above. It really depends
on the situation, time of day, mood, if I'm alone or with guests, etc.
One of the real benefits of the SS/SB setup for me is the amazing
flexibility of ways to start and then continue playing music. For me,
once you master the slight idiosyncrasies of things like going right
and then down a couple of times on a now playing screen to use the
current track as a seed for MIP, you can do pretty much whatever you
want. Admittedly this sort of methodology does not have a high WAF but
that's where pre-defined playlists of stuff I know she likes come in,
tied to a favourites button for simplicity.

When I do want to search I usually use Lazy Search which allows the
neat trick of thinking of a particular tune (I'm a jazz listener) and
getting a list of all of the versions I have of that on the system and
then playing them all with a couple of button presses - makes for
interesting comparisons if you are that way inclined.

I would say that making playlists is pretty difficult using SS alone
but I have hit on a simple method (on Linux) of using XMMS which
enables me to drag and drop flac files out of my music folder onto a
list window which can then be easily saved as a Playlist. It will even
randomise the list for you before saving.

Basically I'm happy with the way things are but of course YMMV.

Looks like a bug in slimserver to me. The slimserver process should kill
the wmadec process after it's done playing your music. Have you tried

I've noticed that my squeezebox buffers streaming audio when I press

2007-01-29 Thread smoj

I have indeed tried all of the above, but thanks for your suggestions.
I suppose the next move is just to take v6.5.1 off entirely (again...)
and just use one of the older versions I fortunately still have the
installs for.

It actually seems like the more times I reinstall/rescan the less music
I end up with. For instance, the 10cc folder (just happens to be first
in the artist list) dropped from the full 16 tracks to 11 to 8 and now
I've only got one showing.

What makes this more frustrating is that my music is on an XP Pro
system with nothing more than a power cord in the back of it, so in
solving all of these troubles I've been using remote desktop connection
(puts a little more legwork into fully rebooting the computer for
starters.)

[slim] Re: How would you like to select which music to play ?

2007-01-29 Thread smc2911

The main ways I cue music are (in roughly order of priority):

1. Browse New Albums to play music I've just bought/ripped.
2. Dynamic playlist Top Rated (4 or 5 star) using your fantastic
TrackStat/DynamicPlaylist/SQLPlaylist combo.
3. Dynamic playlis Unrated (with around 10,000 we are working hard to
rate them all and we've almost hit 50%).
4. Lazy Search to find a particular artist/album/track that just sprang
to mind.

At some point method three should become unnecessary.

That pretty much meets all my needs at the moment, so I don't really
have any great new suggestions to make.

[slim] Re: Can anyone recommend headphones?

2007-01-29 Thread tommypeters

My experience is hat the isolating ones are better bang-for-the-buck
than the noise-cancelling, but YMMV.

Koss have the best low-end, though many people have problems fitting
The Plug well in their ears. And if they're not fitted well, they
sound becomes very boomy (or instead without bass). Their Spark Plug
fits a bit easier.

For the middle end Shure e2c e3c are really good, as well as
Etymotic's model (forgotten model name/number).

At higher end Etymotic also has good models, don't know if the Shure
e4c are worth their money. There's another manufacturer also making
very good high-end - have forgotten the name - but maybe it's not
interesting if the headphones start to cost the same as the
computer...?

[slim] Re: How would you like to select which music to play ?

2007-01-29 Thread adamslim

I always select music at the time, never choosing random play. I also
never use playlists or ratings. I normally use the web interface, 95%
of the time. Where my CDs have multiple pieces (classical), I separate
them into 'albums' that are each one full piece.

I use browse artist for pop, and I'm totally happy with that; I only
have about 300 pop albums. However, classical (the majority of my
listening) is more cumbersome. I use genres that have the period
(baroque/modern etc), scale (chamber, orchestral etc), type (concerto,
symphony, quartet), but this only gets me part of the way there.

What I would like is a system like the way www.dabs.com works (!):

- I choose symphony, and it gives me the choice of selecting submenus
(or filters), for example Composer, Period, Orchestra and Conductor,
but also gives me the view of albums that fit my selection

I'd like a choice of whether to show albums or tracks (I'd always use
albums, but others may not)

The problem is that I don't think there is enough info in MP3 tags for
this. I have multiple values in genre tags, but it doesn't know
whether this tag is a period or whatever. I'm sure we could get around
this, though.

So that's what would do it for me :)

[slim] Re: Update to v6.5.1 creates problems

2007-01-29 Thread Soulman

I have similar problems with 6.5.x (starting with 6.5 allready). ) In my
case about 25% of all files where not indexed after a complete rebuild
of the DB. Anyhow, after a rescan for new files, some of the missing
files did show up, and after some 12 or so days with nightly rescan for
new files the index DB was complete.

I discussed thet with the tech support allready and they have ben able
to sort of reproduce the problem: Some files simply dont get indexed
for unknown reasons. Anyhow, They did not come up with a real solution
so far (seems they ahve given up...)

Anyhow, because a dozen rescans or so do the job for me, its not such a
big deal and I can live with it.

Another problem I have since 6.5 (wihtich still exists with the
currently installed 6.51) is that all tracks in the current playlist
are showed to be from the same album which is the currently played
track from.

Hm. I guess I need to cleariefy that a bit:

Lets asume the current playlist has 3 records in it say
Beatles-Love,
Carl Orff-Camina Burana
XOL DOG 400 - Unstable Prototype

All of these records have more then one track, so the playlists
consists of about 30 tracks.

If the current track played is f.e. Strawberry Field forever from
the Beatles album Love then the webinterface shows that all OTHER
tracks, including the ones from Carl Orff and YOL DOG 400 are from the
album/recording Love.

Once track from XOL DOG 400 plays, all tracks are from the
album/recording Unstabel Prototype.

If you click on a track for detailed information, then this detailed
information shows the correct data. Its onyl in the current playlist
window.

(using Server 6.5-6.5.1, German, Server running on a Mac withOS X 104.7
-10.4.8 DE )

The problem seems to be limited to the skin DARK however.

[slim] Server Securitry IP-Range blocking

2007-01-29 Thread Soulman

The IP Range blocking alows to do something as

(f.e.) 192.166.198.0-50 to allow incomeing conntections from a range
of IPs.

What I need to do is to allow from say 123.123.90.0 to 123.123.110.255

How Do I do that?

Something like

123.123.90.*-110.*
or
123.123.90-110
or
123.123.90.0-110.255

or is it not possible?

I do not want to do
123.123.*.* (which works and which is what I currently do... but this
opens much more addresses then actually needed)

Hint for me anyone?

(Why do I need to do that? My server has a fixed IP and is in a center,
while my Slimbox is behind a DSL line. This line resets every other
night and gets a new IP from the address range
123.123.90.*-123.123.110.*)

SORRY, BUT I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT -

The driver would be a very, very good idea. If this is not possible, a

My suggestion: you have done your point very clear, probably at
Logitech (which does understand consumer business) got it, stop wasting

[slim] Re: How would you like to select which music to play ?

2007-01-29 Thread MillmoorRon

1. I use SQL Playlists and Trackstat quite a lot. My most common
selection method by far is a random dynamic playlist of never played
tracks and while I'm listening I will rate the songs and occasionally
play a random selection of top rated songs. I also have a selction of
SQL playlists which are a bit less general - e.g. Rock music from
1968-74. If I'm in the mood for a particular artist/genre I will use
(custom) browse to get to it. Quite often I will hear a song from a
random playlist and it will remind me of another song I would like to
listen to. To find these I prefer to use Lazy Search, as this seems the
quickest way, and insert them into the playlist. I do not use any static
playlists.

Generally, I like to hear a random selection, sometimes modified by
certain criteria, but with the ability to add individual tracks at
will.

2. I think the combination of SQL Playlists, Custom Browse/Scan and
Trackstat already gives plenty of scope for future ways to listen that
I've not yet thought of! I'm also quite intrigued by the LastFM similar
artists feature of Custom Scan. It seems to allow a Pandora-like
selection from my library. An option to permanently exclude the
currently playing artist from a 'similar' playlist would be useful.

What the feature request doesn't cover is the enhanced data required
for the genre tag. If we could have a genre tag as follows:
Classical;Period=Classical;Scale=Orchestral;Type=Symphony

And SS could be made to parse this and use such data for browsing then
I'd be most pleased. Ideally, the data field names would be
dynamically created so that the user could control this - i.e. if there
is Foo=Bar, then it would create a field named Foo that you could
filter on, and this track would be Bar. Do you think this is
reasonable and/or possible?

The problem with slimserver is that the environment it runs in can be
completely different.
- Some people uses MP3 files some other people uses FLAC files.
- Some uses iTunes or MusicIP plugins for scanning files and some uses
the native scanning mechanism builtin in slimserver.
- Different software is used for tagging music files.
- Some people knows what tags are other have no idea what a tag is
- Slimserver runs on different operating systems.

- Sound quality is number one priority for SlimDevices, while other

The problem with this senario is that it is impossible for SlimDevices

I'm running my slimserver on a server and has only been running

haven't had a single problem during this time. I know you guys that are
having problems might not feel any better because of this, but at least
it shows that it can actually work really good.

I've tried an uninstall and a re-install. My symptom is that Slimserver
won't start.

I find this message in the event log:

C:\PROGRA~1\SLIMSE~1\server\Bin\MSWIN3~1\mysqld.exe: unknown option

I have no idea of how to fix this.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Hi

Personally I don't like the idea of using either a standard or
user-specific fixed sub-genre structure like this. While I have genre
values along the lines you suggest I also use values which wouldn't
really classify well like that.

The multi-level browse I had envisaged would allow you to make a
selection on a tag (eg Genre) and then to make another selection on
another tag (which could be Genre or something else). That would allow
you to filter on

Genre=Classical
Genre=Romantic
Genre=Symphony

which would give you the hierarchical search you are thinking of, but
would also allow me to filter on

Genre=Romantic
Genre=Loud
Genre=Choral

And, of course, to have a

Conductor=Karajan

in the mix if we felt like it...

If some of the defined enhanced data fields you are interested in are
something you would want to make much use of, I think that would be
better served by using a custom tag for that purpose: we can do that
today with one of erland's plugins (thats how I have PERFORMER in use
at the moment!) but there are many more ways this could be used - see
another of my requests,
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2700

BTW - not sure what problems you are having with creating a password in
bugzilla - you do know it is entirely separate from the forums?

I don't have any longtime experience with SlimServer on Windows, as I only
use it on my development machine (which is a Windows laptop). But I think
there are so much more tools installed on typical Windows systems which
can make live for a server type application harder: antivirus tools,
personal firewalls (and both with often not very transparent behaviour and
configuration), optimizing utilities etc.

And then there's simply a much bigger number of Windows installations out
there. Which increases the number of problems even if both systems are on
par. And you'll mainly hear about the troublesome installations. Happy
campers don't bother subscribing to forums.

But still: ome say the problem was sitting between keyboard and screen -
this happens a lot less with headless Linux boxes :-)

Hallo erland
Do you want a device driver because you think there would be less bugs

an external application not written by Logitech ?
Or do you really want the device driver for the functionality ?

I would like to be able to use Slimbox as a (high quality) remote
soundcard. The beauty of device driver concept (if the implementation
is high quality) is that it would allow the use of any software. Basic
integration would just stream the sound, while advanced integration
would also support the display

The reason I'm asking is because newly written code often has more

[slim] Re: Interesting issue with 6.5.2/nightly

2007-01-29 Thread AubreyCTurnerJr

I did some more testing with this on an openSuSE 10.1 system and found
that it has the same problem. It seems that startproc forks the new
process using the caller's environment, even if it is starting as a new
user (I confirmed this in the source for startproc as well).

So this means that under SuSE, invoking the init script from root will
always cause HOME to be the HOME of root. This probably explains why I
found a number of forum entries where people were having problems
getting Slimserver to start after installation, since the SuSE init
scripts all use startproc to invoke Slimserver under the Slimserver
user.

So I began looking for a way to find the user's home directory without
relying on the environment. The following code should work on Unix,
but not on Windows (but I see that Prefs.pm checks for Unix, so it
should be OK).

It uses 'getpwuid()' (http://perldoc.perl.org/functions/getpwuid.html)
to retreive the user's home directory, based on the UID ($) of the
currently running user.

Code:

  @uvals = getpwuid($);
  $dir = $uvals[7];
  print (Retreived home directory = .$dir.\n);

Running the above in a Perl script invoked via startproc correctly
gives the user's home directory based on the userid that startproc is
told to use (i.e. if used with -u slimserver the output shows
/usr/local/slimserver instead of /root).

i have always duplicated the artwork file in each dir of a multi disc
set, so i can't speak to if it did that in my case.

The weird thing is that the albums that worked before like that are
still working like thateven after I delted the /cache/Artwork,
restarted SS and did a complete rescan. This is how they look:

\Folk\Townes Van Zandt\2000 - Texas Troubador (Disc 1)\*.flac
cover.jpg
\Folk\Townes Van Zandt\2000 - Texas Troubador (Disc 2)\*.flac
\Folk\Townes Van Zandt\2000 - Texas Troubador (Disc 3)\*.flac
\Folk\Townes Van Zandt\2000 - Texas Troubador (Disc 4)\*.flac

so I have the cover.jpg in with the CD1 directory and all of the CD1
flac files. But in the other directories I only have the .flac files
for that CD, no artwork. However, the ALBUM tag for all files in all
directories is set to Texas Troubador and then I use DISCNUMBER =
1,2,3,4 for each directory. The year, genre, and artist tags also
match for all files. I just figured that since SS scans them all and
then groups them together, it only needed one artwork file, and it has
always worked that way until yesterday.

[slim] Re: Can anyone recommend headphones?

2007-01-29 Thread mrchrispy

I'm a big fan of the noise isolating variety of headphones. I ride the
subway to work every morning and they're a great way to block out (most
of) the noise of the train and people around me without extra battery
attachements or ridiculous head enlarging earmuffs.

One word of warning about the Etymotic ER-6i's though. While their
sound quality is fantastic they are extremely delicate. I had to
replace them once during their one year warranty period since the
extremely thin chord on one ear began to cut out. It happened again
six months later after the warranty was over and I decided that $120 a
year in headphone costs weren't working.

I replaced them with the Shure Er-2c's which have a much thicker chord
and a 2 year warranty. Sound quality is comparable and I haven't
looked back since.

BTW, Shure's warranty is 2 years *from the date of product manufacture*

I take this to mean you can keep sending them back so long as no one set
gets older than 2 years - and I'm on my fourth replacement pair already.

Of course this doesn't reflect very well on the headphones - I get
almost exactly 6 months of daily use from a pair of E3Cs before they
start getting faulty. But this is mysteriously double the amount of time
(3 months) that each pair of Sony MDR-EX71s lasted me...

its definitely something that Logitech need to address.

I also believe that slimserver probably isn't the cause in most

the environment slimserver is running in. It might be everything from
an operating system filled with applications and games that conflicts
to badly tagged music files or users that aren't used to using a

So I think Logitech needs to focus on addressing the source to the
problem instead of making slimserver handling all kinds of strange
environments. Some examples to this would be to:
- Provide a prefered ripping and tagging tool with the product
- Sell an optional small PC like hardware with preinstalled slimserver
- Provide virutual machines with slimserver (for example VMware based)
- Improve the installation program so people doesn't have to uninstall

[slim] Re: Playlists - how do you save after updating?

2007-01-29 Thread tweis

I am having the same problem. Here is more detail.

I have playlists I saved with the version of SlimServer prior to 6.5.0.
They all worked. I saved a copy of the playlist directory.

I then uninstalled Slimserver and then installed 6.5.0. This
reinitialized the default play list directory. I then set the playlist
directory to the location where I copied the playlists to.

Slimserver would not recognize the playlists in the directory I pointed
it to. I then selected the Only rescan playlists choice on rescan
music library and did a rescan. It ran for several minutes, to no
apparent effect. Slimserver still does not see my playlists.

Is there something else to try?

Just as a side note, Windows can be very stable as a server to. The
problem is when you use it as desktop and install new software and
games every week and upgrade to new version of drivers now and then and
start to install firewalls and antivirus software. A few years back I
was running my web server on Windows (W2k I think) and it was as stable
as my current Linux box.

The reason that most problems are found on Windows is probably because
there are more Windows users and the Windows computer often tend to
also act as the ordinary desktop where all kind of strange things are
installed.

[slim] Re: Problem restoring playlists from backup

2007-01-29 Thread tweis

Hello,

I am having a similar problem. When I update Slimserver, I can't get
it to recognize any of my existing playlists. I've tried uninstalling
and reinstalling, copying playlists to directories and alternately,
setting the playlist directory to where my playlists are. Slimserver
sees none of my playlists.

I initially discovered the problem when I updated to 6.5.0. I had my
playlists in the default location and it got wiped out. I rebuilt my
playlists in a safe location but I can't use them.

Thanks,
Thomas

[slim] Re: Can anyone recommend headphones?

2007-01-29 Thread sc53

I think closed headphones sound far better than noise-cancelling ones.
As others have said, check out www.head-fi.org, the for sale forum
always has headphones for sale, some just slightly older than brand
new. Closed phones I like are: Sennheiser HD280 (can buy from
Headroom, an online headphone gear store), Sennheiser 25-1, and
Beyerdynamic 250-80. Ultrasone, another German company, also makes lots
of models of closed phones. If you want something very small and
portable, look at the in-ear monitors (IEM's) like Shures and Etymotics
as others have recommended. Very noise proof but you won't hear most
anything else around you either, like your boss speaking to you or your
phone ringing.

[slim] Playlist expected behavior question

2007-01-29 Thread Mitch Harding

Hi everyone,

I have a question about the expected behavior of playlists.

Here is a typical sequence of events for me:
1) Load playlist named A
2) Add some songs to it
3) In the web interface (I use Fishbone, if it matters) click on Save in
the right pane to save the new playlist
4) In the left pane, enter a different name, like B and hit enter

My playlist B is saved, but A is erased. Is this expected behavior? If so,
is there any way for me to start with an existing playlist, add to it, save
it, and have both the old and the new playlists still saved? Within
Slimserver, I mean -- I know I could accomplish this by using a different
program for managing my playlists.

Thanks in advance for any help.

[slim] Automatic artwork resizing

2007-01-29 Thread lemmy999

I know that if you have a cover.jpg file that is 300x300 it will resize
on the fly to 100x100 for viewing in Slimserver album view. I was
considering trying to make a 100x100 thumb.jpg in each directory so
that the artwork will load faster when I am using SServer from a remote
location over the internet. But will this help at all? Does the resize
happen on the server and then the smaller 100x100 image is sent to the
remote location or does it send the 300x300 image and the resize
happens at the remote location?

[slim] Re: How would you like to select which music to play ?

2007-01-29 Thread slimkid

Hi,

I find the 'drill down' method to be very usefull if one really wants
to actively listen to the music. Lately, I have asked a question about
obvious bug, where there's the arrow showing by the 'Year' tag, but
drill-down doesn't work.

But then, I'm thinking that the drill-down might be implemented on any
tag where there's a posibility of having multiple items. Title is the
first that comes to mind. For example, I'm listening to 'Almost Blue'
performed by Diana Krall. Then I ask myself, let's see how does Elvis
Costello does the same song (for purely trivia reasons :) ). Then, I'd
like to compare it to more classical performance of Billy Holiday. So,
drill-down on title would make sense. Then, I want to hear why (or if)
is Karajan's vision of Requiem better than other's performances. Drill
down on track title or album should be able to take me to the another
track with the same name.

thks,

K

 2. In Slimserver, clear library, rescan
 3. Slimserver shows no volume adjustment (this makes sense)
 4. In MP3Gain, load the track. Run track analysis. it shows a track

 5. Go to MP3Tag for the same file. It shows a ReplayGain value of
 -9.26!
 6. Go to Slimserver: clear library, rescan
 7. Slimserver shows a volume adjusment value of -9.26 (this matches

 16. FooBar2000 advanced edit: shows value of -9.27
 17 SlimServer. Clear library, rescan.
 18. Slimserver: volume adjustment value of -4.75

 What is going on here?

Hi
Does this not just show the difference between the reference values set
between ReplayGain MP3Gain?
MP3Gain can have a user defined value therefore when you are IN that
program if you analyse the track and your reference value is set to
93dB - the values in the list below it are referenced to this value.
Going into MP3Tag or Foobar - shows you the stored replaygain value
which is always referenced to 89dB (I think).
MP3Gain will let you change the reference point (as said above) but his
only works when the value is written to the file (ie the track data is
altered - rather than reading a value from a tag). Otherwise the
analysis value stored to tag is like the value stored to tag from
Foobar's Replaygain...

Hope that makes some sense!!

Not to distract the thread, but I have a related question. Here is my
desired behavior:

I want all of my artists to show up in the artists list, whether or not they

However in the albums list, I want a compilation album to only show up once,

I've found no combination of settings which produces this -- I seem to

Can we have Compilation Album list by Album Artist option please?

Use the alternative setting Group compilation albums together. This
will suppress the artists that only appear on compilation albums. They
should still be searchable and will appear under the album listing, just
not in artist listings.

My question was really one about the display of the albums when the
List compilation ablums under each artist option is selected. I know
a lot of changes are constantly being made to the way VA albums are
handled, with many unintended side-effects, so it wouldn't surprise me
if the ugly album display above was unnoticed by any of the developers
or the beta testers. Then again, it wouldn't surprise me either if
that was the way it was supposed to look, although I'd sure like to
hear the reason why it would be desired.

[slim] Re: Problem restoring playlists from backup

2007-01-29 Thread Siduhe

First question - is the path used in your playlist files the same as the
way Slimserver sees your music library ?
So if your playlist shows mnt/dir/Music/filename.mp3, is your music
library also set up as mnt/dir (for example) ?

Do your playlists use relative paths ? [Slimserver doesn't]

You need to point Slimserver at the playlist directory - does it
recognise the directory as valid ? Could it be a permissions issue, if
you've been moving the playlists around - does Slimserver have read
access ?

Finally, try running Slimserver from the command line,
but add the following --d_scan --logfile=[your directory
here]scanlog.txt

Then do a playlist only rescan. When Slimserver has finished the
scan, look for the scanlog.txt file and see if there are any error
messages. Does this give you a clue as to why the files aren't found ?
Welcome to post a chunk up here if you want others to comment.

See the below thread for a very similar discussion I had with another
poster that may help.

Are you using 6.5.1? There were some significant changes made to
compilation handling to fix sorting and pagebar issues in browse

I'm not seeing the situation that you're talking about... In browse
Albums, albums never show up more than once. Even when List
compilation albums under each artist is set, all my compilations are
still sorted to the spot where Various Artists would appear
alphabetically. That setting only appears to apply to browse Artists,
causing all of the one of artists from compilations to be listed.

Yes. I think it was eliminated in part to avoid the inconsistency
between the gallery and list views - otherwise, you'd have albums
appearing and disappearing only because they were missing artwork.

on the fly to 100x100 for viewing in Slimserver album view. I was
considering trying to make a 100x100 thumb.jpg in each directory so
that the artwork will load faster when I am using SServer from a remote
location over the internet. But will this help at all? Does the resize
happen on the server and then the smaller 100x100 image is sent to the
remote location or does it send the 300x300 image and the resize
 happens at the remote location?

Resizing is done on the server. However, I believe that the use of the
thumbnail jpegs in the directory (ie 'thumb.jpg', or whatever you would
have configured it as) vanished from the server in 6.5.

This is one reason why (IMO) trying to view album art is far slower
with the later versions - it has to resize the images on the server
before serving them, whereas previously it'd just pick up the thumbnail
graphic which had been pre-sized correctly and serve that.

After seeing an apparent lack of response to this and other similar
threads by those in the know I decided to go back to 6.3.1. That got
rid of the whacked ends and also may have gotten rid of another problem
that I was having where Slimserver would stumble after the first half

I think part of the problem is that it varies so much depending upon

[slim] PepperPad3 as slimserver remote

2007-01-29 Thread bklaas

This device has been brought up in past threads, but I thought I'd ping
the forum again about it--

Has anyone tried using a PepperPad3 as a slimserver remote?
http://pepperpad.com

More specifically, have you tried either Nokia770 or Touch skin on it?
How does it work?

I'm really intrigued by the PepperPad3 because of its combination of
WiFi and IR. Potentially a fantastic DIY slimserver remote. They
already market it as a combination internet tablet and universal
remote, so the seeds are there.

Not so intrigued about the price (~$600). Though I can understand why a
device like this might cost that much, Nokia's 800 must be seriously
undercutting their sales.

cheers,
#!/ben

2007-01-29 Thread bklaas

just did some searching around the pepperpad forum...

looks like somebody on the pepperpad forum is using slimserver with
their pepperpad, but not with a squeezebox...he actually installed
softsqueeze directly on the pepperpad! I'm shocked, since the pepperpad
is linux-based and I've never had success running softsqueeze on my

on a handheld.

[slim] Re: PepperPad3 as slimserver remote

2007-01-29 Thread gandt

I use it all the time with the slightly pathetic mod to touch I
suggested the last time this came up. It works well enough and, of
course, its built in speakers are a bit more powerful than those on the
nokia (dunno about n800 though). Its water resistant so it has become
the bathroom squeezebox!

I like the Pepperpad and use it more than the Nokia - mainly because
the form factor makes it a better living room tablet. It is the way the
family does quick web based tasks whilst watching TV. The Nokia slips in
the pocket so is better out and about but seems to me the Pepperpad 3
is designed to live in the lounge, has IR and therefore makes the
better uber remote.

I do not think though that it is better than the Nokia, just clearly
different.

Its hard coded into the server at present and looking at the caching

So what do people think a better time would be? - downside of being

Re: [slim] Re: Introducing..... me!

2007-01-29 Thread Michael Herger

I thought you might want to distribute a VM version of slimCD...

I thought about this. But there are two reasons I don't think it makes a
lot of sense:

- setting up a VM yourself is really easy (given you're using that live
disk VM)
- the main problem remains the same as when using the CD with your
computer: how to connect SlimCD to your collection - that's no easy task
for a Linux newbie

As an alternative I just did a quick test with a SlimNAS VM, based on
FreeNAS, featuring two shares (Music and SlimNAS installation folder). A
full install with a 100GB virtual disk would easily fit in a 100MB ZIP
archive. But again: does it make sense copying a collection to a virtual
disk, if it's already on your harddisk?

And a VM run on your computer needs a lot more RAM than the SlimServer
itself. So... while this is might be a good approach for demoing the
possibilities, I don't think it's mass market. There must be something
leaner than VMware to make this approach reasonable.

randybrand,
I can say that after dealing with the truncation of my wma tracks that
I also reverted back to 6.3.1 after receiving only cursory assistance
from Slimdevices support.
You make a valid point in that with only a few of us that are affected
by this bug and no apparent troubleshooting with the log reporting
function of slimserver itself, verification, not to mention specific
problem definition is futile.

ok, that said, when 6.5.1 was released I did a clean install (6.5.1)
and found that the truncation problem became intermittent for me.
Then, 6.5.1 slimserver refused to start so I again went back to 6.3.1 -
truncation issue went bye bye.
Because of major rework of my storage/array structure on my local
machine, I re-installed my os (wxpsp2).
Guess what?
6.5.1 is working almost flawlessly.
Don't know how to explain that one but I am not inclined to think that
the fresh windoze install had anything to do with it.

Maybe the camera in the interface ran out of film?

[slim] Re: Server Securitry IP-Range blocking

2007-01-29 Thread Mark Lanctot

Yes, you can use both ranges and wildcards:

This field accepts a list of specific IP addresses, * style wildcards,
and IP address ranges in a comma separated list. For example:

10.1.2.2 will allow only 10.1.2.2 to connect

10.1.2.* will allow anything with an IP address that be the 10.1.2.x
 addresses.

10.1.2.2-50 will allow IP addresses in the range 10.1.2.2 - 10.1.2.50
 to connect.

Finally, multiple entries can be combined with commas, like this
 10.1.2.2,172.16.1.*,192.168.1-255.*

However it might be easier just to get a static IP address at
www.dyndns.com.

[slim] Re: Can anyone recommend headphones?

2007-01-29 Thread mrchrispy

quoteWhen I tried them the thicker cord was pretty microphonic. Almost
as bad as the cord on my ER-4s./quote

Not totally sure what this means, but if it refers to the noise you get
when the chord jiggles around I found a relatively easy way to
neutralize it I use an aligator clip to attach the cord to my collar to
keep the headphones from pulling at my ears and to keep the chord going
down my back towards my pocket rather than dangling in front of me (the
clip clamps on my clothes not on the chord).

The benefits are twofold:

1) while walking the chord doesn't get caught up in subway turnstiles,
doorstops and the like.

2) You don't get that weird noise from the headphone swishing around
since it's completely controlled for few inches from your ear to your
collar.

(Of course if microphonic means something else I'm babbling pointlessly
here.)

PS One hundred dollars a year on headphones wouldn't have worked for me
either. As a one time purchase to last a few years a hundred dollars is
reasonable for me. Once you start talking annual purchase it's time to
start rethinking priorities especially considering how much I've
already invested in squeezeboxes, ipods, hard drives, etc.

[slim] SB3 will not work with Belkin wireless ethernet bridge

2007-01-29 Thread mawfin

Help! Has anyone successfully networked their SB3 with a Belkin F5D7330
wireless ethernet bridge?

I bought two wired versions of the SB3, because the house had CAT6
throughout. Now having moved house, one of these SB3 had to be made
wireless, hence the bridge. (or, if someone wants to buy the used
wired model ...)

I cannot get these two boxes to talk to one another, in order to allow
the SB3 to connect through the bridge to the network. I read a post on
another forum that there was a trick to the Belkin settings, but it did
not elaborate and I cannot find that post in order to ask for more
detail.

I am using a BT Home Hub modem/router updated with firmware 6.2.2.6.
The Belkin firmware is also updated to 1.00.09
SB3 is updated to firmware version 72.

The SB3 will connect to the router successfully through a direct
ethernet connection (either static or DHCP addressing).

The bridge connects wirelessly to the router using WPA-PSK security -
no problems pinging it and getting the configuration screen. Again,
either static or DHCP - no difference. (Curiously, the MAC addresses
for both the WLAN and LAN adapter components show up on the router.)

I can plug a laptop (with its wireless network card disabled) into the
bridge and it connects to the network fine - the bridge no longer shows
up independently on the router - the router only sees what is plugged
into the bridge.

So, the bridge appears to do its job, but ...

Now, try plugging the SB3 into the bridge, and -- nothing. SB3 cannot
find network for DHCP; try static IP for SB3, cannot ping it, etc.

Tried messing around with MAC address of the SB3 but no luck.

Could be that the router does nto like this combination of device and
bridge - I will try a different brand although I am not hopeful.

Any ideas anyone? Would be fantastic if this could work as it seems it
should, otherwise left with expensive pieces of kit that are no use to
me.

Very grateful for any help.

Hamish

You select the genres to include, then click either 'save' at the

go back to the last saved config after restart.
