Re: [slim] AppleTV and SlimServer/SqueezeCenter

2008-01-16 Thread willyhoops

You could always pick up a tiny monitor if all you wanted was audio and
it would have the advantage of a big interrface.

The movie rental deal with all the studios and for many countries not
just the USA is of course amazing and really shows Apple's power.
Clearly they can and will put together a subscription service for audio
as well. Then you could play anything in the world and move anything you
listen to a lot onto your ipod all for a monthy fee. Thats the dream.

The problem anyone will have in competing with apple is getting the
same content offerings (eg I can't get Rhapsody in the UK), the
economies of scale in equipment costs ($325 for 160Gb Apple TV vs $400
for simple duet + remote), and the extreme difficulty of writing
software sexy enough to compete with Apple (slimserver vs itunes).

I think Sonos has had it too - but if there is a lesson in the
popularity of that it's that slimdevices have been too focused on the
people on this site who like to hack and play with degrees in geeek.
But even Sonos has no buit in hard drive and you can not seriously
recommend the qnap to the man on the street. I guess Apple pretty much
have it in the bag even though their focus is so far on TV not music.

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42229

Question: Do you want to be able to control the new SBR with your
SBx-remote?

- Of course I want to!
- Nah, why should I?

I brief trial, setting the brightness to zero and trying to control SB3
using standard remote, suggests this isn't such a good idea ;)

Or do you need to get rid of the config files, too, with aptitude purge

[slim] Sorting albums by year? Possible?

2008-01-16 Thread Espen

(first post in this forum, hope this is the right sub forum).

I have always named my ripped albums to folders named like artist -
year - album title to allow a proper chronology when listing
folders (alfabetically) in a filesystem.

Is it possible to do the same in a Squeezebox? I would like to see the
same alfabetical album order when browsing in Artists - Some Artist
. Currently the albums are sorted by name ignoring the release year. (I
want the album sort order to be by year, not name). All individual files
(mp3 format) in a folder are tagged with the correct year, album, artist
etc. I prefer not to browse the raw music folder as entries easily
become too long to be usable for the display.

Also: Is it possible to hide or remove the All Songs entry?

I am using SB3 and SqueezeCenter Beta (from last week, January 10th I
think) on UNIX.

Thanks also to Jotham - the Transit High-Resolution Mobile Audio

[slim] Slimserver just quits - help needed!

2008-01-16 Thread popmarter

It happened to me twice now and i am getting a very irritated now.

I have a modem, connected to a Linksys WRT54G router. From that point
it goes wireless to a laptop. Router is with cable connected to a
Ds107+ NAS. Than i have a Squeezebox 3 wirelles connected to the NAS to
listen to music on the NAS.

now, without any reason the SB3 quits and can no longer connect to the
NAS. Nor my laptop, that one can't connect to the maps on the NAS. I
think it has something to do with the Ip's, but i am not very familiar
with that, so please help..

Some settings on the Linksys WRT54G router, in Basic Setup:

Internet setup: DHCP (to get internetconnection (which still works
(both my laptop and SB3 (for SqueezeNetworks)

Router ip: 192.168.1.1
Subnet 255.255.255.000
DHCP server disable
Static DNS1: 192.168.1.136 (laptop)
Static DNS2: 192.168.1.137 (slimserver NAS)
static DNS3: 192.168.1.138 (SB3)

I connect my SB3 with the wireless network and put in the static ip
(..138).

Now what do i have to check? And where?

Re: [slim] Sorting albums by year? Possible?

2008-01-16 Thread teejay

You can add a tag to your mediafiles called ALBUMSORT. I've done that on
all mp3s and flac files, and filled them with 'artist-year-album
title' for non-compilation albums. The albums are then sorted by this
new tag, while the display still shows the contents of the albumtitle
tag. I don't know any Unix tools to do this in bulk, though I'm sure
they exist.

Another option is the custom browse plug-in, see
http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Custom_Browse_plugin.

2008-01-16 Thread schatzy

tamanaco,

You should find the configuration file in the acc-v1-RC2 folder that is
crated on unzipping the downloaded file.

If you are not seeing it is may be hidden by windows.
1. open the folder with ACC in it.
2. click on tools (in the tool bar at the top)
3. click on folder options
4. click on the view tab
5. under the hidden file and folders click on show hidden fies and
folders
6. also uncheck hide extensions for known file type and
7. click OK.

at this point you should see a file called ACC.cfg

If you still do not see it then open note pad and type in the
following

SF|
G2E|
CF|

Save the file as ACC.cfg in the folder with the acc program.

if it saves it with a .txt at the end the rename the file ACC.cfg and
try ACC again.

Secret Squirrel

IE is normal set to try and connect to the internet normally. This can
be changed (work off line mode)but then every time you go to use it to
connect to the internet you would have to manually tell it to connect
(on line mode). In fact all browsers work this way.

So when ACC opens IE to display, IE thinks it should try and connect to
the internet to get ready for your request of a web page. But ACC is
telling it what to display so it displays the ACC generated page and is
then reday for yout to type in a web address or choose from favorites
etc.

Re: [slim] Whole house audio but I need a controller

2008-01-16 Thread shawkie

I have decided that my current QNAP TS101 is nowhere near powerful
enough for SC7 (I reckon it needs at least 256MB RAM).

I looked at upgrading it but I can't find anything that ticks all the
boxes. Most cheap NAS boxes are too limited in CPU and RAM. Mini-ITX
based systems are too big and power hungry (IMHO). That only really
leaves Nano-ITX and Pico-ITX. My main problem here is price and finding
one with Gigabit ethernet.

Then there is the cost and limited functionality of the Squeezebox
Controller.

So I think I'm going to seriously look at writing a native remote
control application (much like Moose) for the Axim PDA. This should
give me much more control over the user interface than a web-based
solution and it will use a local copy of the database so it should be
very fast.

Are you running SlimServer as a Windows service or as a user program?

As a user program, set to be accessible by all users...

Do you know if SlimServer can see the external drive?

Well, I can browse to all the music via File Folder or Genre, or
Artist, etc. All the music will play, but the Playlists are empty.

Are you sure you edited the paths so that they're correct from the
perspective of the SlimServer machine? What I mean is that if you were
to edit them from a PC on your network, the files might appear to be on
drive M drive for that PC, but might be drive E on the server. Or if
you edit them on another PC, you might use UNC paths, but need to use
local drive paths for the server.

My old drive mapping from 'My Computer' was J:\
and the old playlists had, for example:
J:\music\ext\Jazz\Exodus Quartet\Way Out There\09. Orbit.flac

New mapping is from 'My Computer' is F:\
edited Playlist example:
F:\music\ext\Jazz\Exodus Quartet\Way Out There\09. Orbit.flac

Is there a way to tell from slimserver what it is using for mapping?
Please educate me how to check that!

[slim] Universal remote and Squeezebox

2008-01-16 Thread Poff

Anyone else that is looking for a universal remote that can control SB?
I had my eyes for Harmony 1000 for a long time, and if a version came
out that supported SB and had the same features as the new controller
(browsing, album art etc) it would be a direct buy for me.

The only other one that is close I think is Pronto, but it’s a little
too pricey.

For now I’m trying out my PDA as a remote for SB, but it doesn’t solve
my problem with all my other remotes.

Rumours of a Harmony with Wi-fi?

Only if you have an HDMI capable DAC. Outside of home theater I'm not
aware of too many of those.

Then you could play any CD in the world and move anything you fancy onto
your ipod all for a flat monthy fee.
I'll believe that when I see it. 50% (rough guess) of the music I buy
isn't even on iTunes for sale yet, never mind rental. Recently we've
seen more pushing against Apple from the major labels, and Amazon are
making very good ground. Interesting times.

$325 for 160Gb Apple TV vs $400 for simple duet + remote

The duet is far from simple - particularly compared to the AppleTV.
The level of functionality and convenience (for audio, obviously) is
far higher IMHO.

I think it's that slimdevices have been too focused on the people on
this site who like to hack and play with degrees in geeek.

When you have a community-built product it tends to become a
community-focussed product. I find that refreshing and it's obviously a
key part of what makes the product line so successful. And yes, IMHO you
can be considered successful without selling 100m units.

The key to software development is to reign in the geeks and focus
 pragmatically on the real user.

Actually the key is to first identify your users, then identify what
they want, and then get the best geeks you can to build it for them. As
a user, AppleTV doesn't do what I want, neither does Sonos. Maybe that
puts me in a minority, fine, so be it. I'm happy to have the option to
get the product which does do what I want - diversity is a good thing
:)

[slim] Announce: Spicefly Syncer - Automatic MusicIP and Slimserver Synchronisation

2008-01-16 Thread cparker

Dear All

This is the first public release of Spicefly Syncer written to deal
with the time consuming issue of synchronising MusicIP and Slimserver
libraries when adding new music.

Just put your new music files into your file store and let SpiceFly
Syncer do all the hardwork!

Spicefly Syncer monitors the MusicIP GUI interface and watches its
status. Then once this has validated the new files, it will then fire
up the MusicIP Headless mode (if applicable) and then finally fire up
the Slimserver Library Refresh.

It was written against Versions 1.8 of MusicIP and Slimserver 6.5
running on Windows XP, it might already work on version 7 but I have no
idea.

It needs to run on the machine that is running MusicIP to retrieve
information on MusicIPs status. It can NOT run on a different machine,
this is because MusicIP is sometimes liberal with reporting its current
status so its not possible to remotely query this and get a reliable
response, so it crawls over MusicIP to determine what is going on. It
also starts up MusicIP and communicates with it to close when its
finished, so these need to happen locally. (For the moment anyway)

It makes NO changes to your environment, it only writes a log file to
the current directory. It requests MusicIP to refresh its library and
then Slimserver to refresh its library but the hardwork is done by the
respective application.

It can be setup to terminate itself once the final refresh has been
started. Therefore it can be used standalone, ie. add your new files
and start Spicefly Syncer. or schedule it to run daily/weekly etc.
whatever works for you.

Further public releases and development may occur depending on
interest. I've used it internally in my setup for a while, so decided
to tidy it up and release it and I hope you find it useful!

Thats all for now! Constructive feedback always welcome.

Download it from http://www.spicefly.com/

If that could be done in a Universal Remote Ill be very happy.

I’m sitting a bit away from the Stereo when I’m listening to music, and
I like to browse around in my music library when I’m listening, and then
the SB display is a little to small.
The new Controller seems very interesting for my needs, but if I could
get a Universal Remote for all my other stuff at the same time………

I have decided that my current QNAP TS101 is nowhere near powerful

I looked at upgrading it but I can't find anything that ticks all the

based systems are too big and power hungry (IMHO).

This should
give me much more control over the user interface than a web-based
solution and it will use a local copy of the database so it should be
 very fast.

I happily use a Kurobox HG/WR for SqueezeCenter 7 with a Squeezebox
Controller. It has just 128Mb, but seems to perform well with my
collection of approximately 4000 tracks.

It also has gigabit ethernet (but probably not enough processor grunt
to make use of it!)

Not wanting to sound like an I'm a Mac/I'm a PC advert, but if you are
using a PC I think you can use the iTunes Update
plugin(http://www.jamescraig.co.uk/SlimServer/index.html). This makes
slimserver use the iTunes artwork without having to embed it in the
files. (You have to set the appropriate option in the Server
Settings-Plugins section).

I have only tried it in Slimserver 6.5 but I think there is a
SqueezeCenter 7 version.

Many thanks for this, Frank. I love it!

I'm not happy, however, with the quality of my album covers. Most of
them are thumbnails that I copied from Amazon.com. They are generally
115 x 115 pixels. They look quite fuzzy on screen and in print.

Would I get better quality covers if I went with the larger covers from
Amazon? Most of them are 240 x 240 pixels. If I did would I then get
fewer albums per page from your script or do you scale them back down?

Thanks.

It might be a while -- slim and harmony are completely different
departments in Logitech.

One thing I that I think might be interesting is to see a slimserver
plugin that integrates the Harmony backend database with IRBlaster --
that way, anything you've already got programmed into your harmony can
also be executed by your slimserver.

2008-01-16 Thread moley6knipe

I'm sure it'll get addressed in an AppleTV firmware update, but for now
searching and browsing for songs on a SB3 is a lot more fun than on an
AppleTV.

My friend's got an AppleTV with a VAST music collection attached, and
it makes my eyeballs go disco-crazy scrolling through it all. Plus, as
and when they add a search function to AppleTV for anything other than
YouTube, you'll still be entering it on the screen via the Apple
remote; whereas for me i just type it into my SB3 remote - ah, the joys
of LazySearch!

Yes, but the potential is there with buffering. Apple TV is the be all
and end all of video on demand, but a few more things are needed before
they take audio. Still I think the future is clear and if they play
thier cards right they can take it. Quite an amazing thing and with the
shares at $162 right now its a buy.

[slim] Boxed in

2008-01-16 Thread HeavyB

I seem to have a problem or rather a lack of some basic comprehension as
to how my Squeezebox et.al. should be configured/set up. I have muddled
through and figured out how to get everything to work (Squeezebox plays
my music library on my stereo and I can switch it to Squeeze Network
and listen to radio streaming like the BBC World Service feed, as I am
doing now and I can access the music library on my PC via Softsqueeze)
. . . but only if I am careful.

A problem arises though if the last thing that I had listened to/used
on the Squeezebox was SlimServer. In this scenario, I turn off the
Squeezebox - and at some point also turn 'off' my PC (sleep or
hibernate or whatever). Later in the day, I turn Squeezebox on to
listen to the radio via Squeeze Network without turning on my PC.
Squeezebox attempts to connect but in that the last thing I had been
using was the aforementioned SlimServer, Squeezebox attempts to connect
to it but cannot and it proceeds into set-up and eventually resets (in
Dutch I might add) itself. I know how to prevent this from happening,
just by making sure the last thing that I tuned in on Squeezebox was
Squeeze Network or to always have my PC turned on, but this can't
possibly be the correct set up, can it?

I suspect the problem is related to the fact that 2 players are
recognized. One (127.0.0.1 . . .) when Squeezebox is off and another
(192.268.2.2) when Squeezebox is on. Is it just a matter of asking
SlimServer to forget about the 127... player (presumably my PC?) ? I
am leery of asking it to do so without asking here first.

Your help is very much appreciated.

[slim] change port used for slimproto

2008-01-16 Thread maggior

I have 2 servers running in my house that run 6.5.4 Slimserver (SuSe
Linux). I've been using softsqueeze to stream music at work from one
of the servers. I'd like to be able to stream from either. To do
this, I need to change the ports that are used for each server. This
way I can set up my router so requests for machine A go to machine A,
and the same for Machine B.

I've already taken care of the HTPP port and that works. However, I
don't see a way to change the slimproto port. A search in these forums
showed that there is a command line option to slimserver.pl. I opened
up the file and don't see an option. In the slimproto source file, I
see where the port value is hardcoded.

To change the port used for slimproto, do I have to change the
slimproto source file? If I do this, will there be any other impact?
Is slimproto used for anything other than softsqueeze?

For now I'm using Winamp to open up stream.mp3, but I would rather be
able to use softsqueeze.

Thanks!
Rich

I did not want to wipe that information out of the wiki page. I do not
have the resources to test various debian distros. I am on Ubuntu
6.06.

I just added:
-or for the development release (currently SlimServer 7.0a1)-

apt-get remove --purge slimserver
apt-get update
apt-get install squeezecenter

I doubt that a purge is necessary. I did not have to configure perl or

Re: [slim] Soft Squeeze Won't Connect Remotely to SlimServer

2008-01-16 Thread Ed C

Thanks Mark!

Both port 9000 and 3483 are forwarded. I learned some more last night.
This may have something to do with my work PC which is on a really
large company's network behind their firewall. I had an old Win95
notebook at home that I connected by dial-up to the internet. I
confirmed that it was at a different IP than my router's WAN IP. Then I
used a port query program to check the ports on my router. Since I had
access control turned-on, the port query showed them all as closed.
Then I added the Win95 machine's IP address to the router's allowed
list and port query showed 3483 and 9000 as listening. I brought-up
Slimserver on the remote machine with no problem. I couldn't test
SoftSqueeze because it requires Java 1.4 but Win95 won't run Java 1.4.
That said, the IP address of my work machine is also in my router's
allowed list. This morning, a port query of my home router from work
shows port 9000 as listening but shows port 3483 as not listening.
I need to get a modern machine, outside my company's firewall, and see
if SoftSqueeze works.

Re: [slim] Boxed in

2008-01-16 Thread maggior

When you turn on the squeezebox, press and hold the left arrow
(navigation) button. This will bring up a menu where you can go into
the network settings. Actually, you probably don't have to turn the
squeezebox on to do this.

Scroll through and you will see an option to connect to squeezenetwork.
Select this and press play. You should then connect to
squeezenetwork.

Certainly not intuitive, but it will work.

You don't have to worry about telling the server to forget any
players.

Have fun!

Re: [slim] Boxed in

2008-01-16 Thread HeavyB

I appreciate the reply but I don't have any problems connecting to
Squeeze Network, that is as long as it was connected the last time I
turned Squeezebox off. The problem (if it is one?) arises when I am
listening to my music library via SlimServer and I turn off the
Squeezebox and also shut down or put my PC to sleep. If I then try to
access Squeeze Network via the Squeezebox (without my PC running) it
automatically goes into a reset whereby I lose my presets, favoties,
language, date-time format etc.). I can get around the problem by
eitehr
a.) just making sure to tune Squeezebox into Squeeze Network before
turning Squeezebox off OR
b.) making sure my PC is running before turning Squeezebox on

But, since Squeeze Network is supposed to be an always-on service, it
seems to me as though something is amiss somewhere and that it is
something basic with how I am connected.

Unfortunately by turning off the PC you have nothing for the Squeezebox
to connect to so it must go back to trying to find something to connect
to and that results in the network configuration coming up.

This is standard operation. As maggior stated Scroll through and you

Your other 2 options are
1. set it to Squeezenetwork each time before you press the off button
2. turn your computer on first, let it start up and then start your

In the web interface, if you browse Albums or Artists and have the
sorting set to 'Artist, Year, Album' you'll get what you want.

In the remote interface (using the remote control and the Squeezebox's
display), no, you can't have albums sorted by year. There's been a
request for this that's now four years old, but it's never been
implemented.

Also: Is it possible to hide or remove the All Songs entry?

Not unless you customize one of the web skins yourself.

[slim] SqeezeBox to connect without a router or access point - not working

2008-01-16 Thread stax

Hello

Just got my SqueezeBox today together with a D-link DWA-140 wireless
USB adapter.
I got no other wireless devices connected to my computer besides that.

Im trying to set up my wireless connection due to the guide: 5996
Configuring a SqeezeBox or Transporter to connect without a router or
access point.
http://slimdevices.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/slimdevices.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5996p_created=1168549067p_sid=IgA4qWVip_accessibility=0p_redirect=p_lva=p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTAsMTAmcF9wcm9kcz0wJnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1pcA**p_li=p_topview=1

Everything seems to be working as described in the guide until I reach
the part where I should set the IP address of the SB manually, there
seems to be no such option.
Instead Sb jumps directly to where it tries to connect to the wireless
network. Of course without any luck.

What should i do to solve this?

What HDD do you have in your Kurobox?

Is it possible to do the same in a Squeezebox? I would like to see the

want the album sort order to be by year, not name). All individual files

Also: Is it possible to hide or remove the All Songs entry?

I am using SB3 and SqueezeCenter Beta (from last week, January 10th I
 think) on UNIX.

Really didn;t see that anyone addressed your original Q.

I prefer the same myself, and while ripping (or I can perform it post
ripping in tagging) I preface every album with ()

It allows for everything to be chronological.

How much work is the CPU doing (on the server) to transcode 2 streams at
once? Perhaps your running out of oomph there, rather than bandwidth?

If this is the case, you might try changing the lame encoding quality
to a lower level, which has less cpu cost.

Re: [slim] help me design audio in my house

2008-01-16 Thread friendlyfire

Greg, I am a pro audio installer based on Vancouver island and I have a
few suggestions, but first a basic question: Are you planning to hire a
pro for the wiring job? If so, they should be able to provide you sound
advice. Your best bet is someone who deals in both the installation and
the equipment. You should find that a good shop will take some time to
visit your house at no charge in order to earn your business.

a few comments: An amp with tuner (we like to listen to local radio)
will be discretely placed nearby

- note that most local radio is also streamed on the internet and
therefore available on your SB

am I correct to assume that the speakers will sound better if they are
mounted on the side of the bulkhead in similar orientation to an in wall
speaker so that the speaker are pointing out horizontally, rather than
vertically downward? I hope I am making myself clear.

If I understand you correctly I think you are going with exterior
speakers that mount to the wall rather than in-wall, and I think this
is a great choice. If you are thinking about flush mount then I'll
comment that both orientations can sound quite good, but given a choice
I recommend in-wall installation rather than in ceiling. In any case it
is extremely important that the speaker has an air cavity to operate
in, so you need to stay away from exterior walls where the insulation
will dampen the sound.

I am thinking of a budget of $200-300 for these speakers. Perhps about
the same for the amp/tuner Any suggestions? I am in Canada. Winnipeg to
be exact.

I generally steer customers towards Paradigm (a fine Canadian brand)
and so far they are quite delighted with the results. Your budget is
reasonable, go visit a local dealer.

In the future, as our budget allows, we would like to place some
speakers in the living room, driven by the amp/tuner in the kitchen.
Although we won't get then now, I would like suggestions about
placement for pre-wiring.

There is no simple answer looking at your diagram. Where do you sit in
the living room? Do you want full sound at the dining room table? Do
you want independent and local control of the volume in this room? Is
there attic or crawlspace access to run wires over or under this room?
The decision on where to place speakers (and how many) will depend on
the answers to these questions.

Last, we don't have a fancy TV or surround sound audio, but I would
like to pre-wire the family room for this. Comments on speaker
placement are welcome. I don't think I will purchase/install any in
wall or in ceiling speakers, but merely place wires for future
speakers.

Make a decision on where the display will be located and where the
equipment that feeds it will be. If the equipment is located near the
display then you only need to wire for the back speakers.

Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask a pro to come visit!

Brian

 Many Thanks.

Yes. From home, select Albums (I know, slighly non-intuitive since you
want Artists)

If you aren't seeing album artwork, on the left side of the menu bar at
the top you will see a little icon. This toggles between list view and
artwork view.

There is a select menu on the right hand side for sorting. Change this
to Artist, Album, which sorts as advertised.

This sort param is sticky, so for example when you exit this mode and
go to 1x1 Artwork, the sort preference is maintained.

mapatton;259452 Wrote:
No one can assist with this? I find that odd.

Sometimes it takes a little while (sometimes as much as a day or more)
to get someone on the forum that knows the answer to your question.

I would presume it is a bandwidth issue (using a 5Mbps cable connection)
 on the upstream, but,,

Most cable internet connections have a slower speed of upload than they
do of download. Like my cable connection at my house has a download
speed of up to 15MB sec (usually runs about 12MB) while the upload
speed is only 768KB (usually runs around 680KB).

You can check this at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Click on one of the cities nearest you and when it has finished it will
give you two numbers one is the download speed the second is the upload
speed.

If your upload speed is less than 800KB you may have a problem,
especially trying to run two streams.

Also doe you wife find that it is a certain time of day that this
happens like shortly after school lets out?

I know in my neighborhood when school lets out and all the children
arrive home the upload and download speeds go down dramatically. This
is caused by the amount of traffic on the system. The more traffic the
slower everyone gets.

Also what is the streaming bit rate?

I have tried to stream 360kbs tracks and it does not work well even on
the 768 upload because of the overhead data that is required.

So check your speeds and answer a couple other questions and i will try
to help you try to get this sorted out.

Speed Upload?
Speed Download?
Time of day it is the worst?
bit rate of your tracks?

[slim] Squeezebox Duet and Remote - to buy or not to buy?

2008-01-16 Thread PLynas

I am interested in the new Squeezebox Duet with the new remote but am
undecided due to the high cost and not having seen the remote in
action. If anyone who has used the new remote could help me it would be
greatly appreciated. Apologies for the long post but I will try and
explain my setup and situation in detail as this will no doubt help
people to give me better advice. Thanks in advance.

I currently have 3 Squeezeboxes as follows:
Squeezebox V1 in my Living Room (occasional use as it competes with the
TV in there)
Squeezebox V2 in my kitchen (used pretty much every day when in there)
Squeezebox V3 in my Dining Room (main one, attached to my Hi-Fi
System).

I work from home in my Dining Room so use my Squeezebox in there a lot,
but as I am working from my laptop I control it from Slimserver on there
most of the time. (My main PC is in a different room).

When not working or when using one of the other two (less used)
Squeezeboxes I use the remote. This works ok, but I have a very large
music collection, so I tend to Browse using the remote, but generally
enter the first letter of an artist or album on the remote to get there
quicker. I presume that you cannot do this on the new remote.

However, I have been waiting for this remote to be released with some
anticipation, as I much prefer to use the Slimserver interface than the
remote, mainly because the location of my Squeezeboxes makes pointing
the remote and reading the screen very incovenient.

Also, I know I am thinking ahead a little here, but I have a new baby
daughter, and I intended to purchase another Squeezebox to put in her
nursery/room. (She does settle down to music so it is never too early).
For that one I am not bothered about a screen and would control it
myself anyway. But a Squeezebox Duet plus remote is still more
expensive than a single Squeezebox.

So I guess my question is - just how user friendly is the new remote?
Is it easy to find what you are looking for quickly if you have a large
music collection and does it offer a big advantage over using the
existing remote with the Squeezebox display? I am tempted to buy but it
is a lot of money and do not want to make an poor decision.

Hope this makes at least some sense. Any feedback is welcome.

[slim] Yet another twilight zone moment...

2008-01-16 Thread pablolie

One thing with the SB3 and SS combo is that things will work great for
months, and then one does something harmless like...

Change the fade-in-fade-out option for both players.

Then all things go to hell. None of the players would play music.
They'd have access to SS and would see the playlists and folders, but
would simply not play music. The songs never went past 0:00.

It got to the point where I told SS to forget both players and I
rejoined them, and yet after playing one song SS would no longer see
the players, they'd disappear even though they were still playing music
(albeit would not react to the remote anymore).

Now I am just reinstalling SS and hope this works...

Phew... now it works. But it's these episodes that sometime make my
heart skip a beat or two. Players that disappear (hadn't happen in a
long time). Player that decides to play with volume at 100% in the
middle of the night (one ocurrence). Playlists that get modified
autonomously (a few times). One could see this from a glass half full
(not bad for 2 years of ownership) or half empty (too much for a
consumer product).

Now I have to wait for it to re-scan my music and playlists, and set up
my former preferences.

Re: [slim] help me design audio in my house

2008-01-16 Thread grego . speiser

Brian: thanks for the reply.

Hiring a pro.
I will check into this. The house is currently gutted right down to
the studs. We are currently framing the walls and we (i.e. our
contractor) will be adding plumbing, electrical and structured wiring
before any drywall goes up. I was thinking we could do the speaker
wiring ourselves (don't run parallel to electric wires, especially
240V, use proper gauge, respect building codes), but I will take your
advice and consult with a local pro.

Kitchen speakers.
Given our open concept plan, there are few walls to handle the
mechanicals like plumbing. As a result, there will be a bulkhead in
the shape of a rectangular solid that will run the length of the
kitchen ceiling along an exterior wall directly above the counter. I'm
not entirely sure of the bulkhead's dimensions but it will run the
length of the room (~16 ft) and be 1-1.5 ft by 1-1.5 ft. The ceiling
is 9.5 ft, and the bulkhead is fitted just below it, so it will be
8-8.5 ft above the floor.

My impression that preferences for speaker placement from an audio
standpoint is:
1) external, with speakers pointed in general direction of audience
2) in wall, with speakers mounted at listener's ear height
3) in ceiling

I would like to have the speaker's mounted on brackets, but I think my
wife will find them unsightly. She wants a very clean appearance.
Further, there will be cabinets all along that wall so I won't be able
to place in-wall speakers at ear height. If I do put flush-mounted
speakers in the bulkhead (which will provide some cavity space), will
they be better pointed downwards (in-ceiling speakers) or horizontally
(in-wall speakers)?

local stations:
I have not explored SB's streaming possibilities. Thanks for
mentioning this--I will search for local streams. We listen mostly to
Winnipeg CBC Radio One so it will likely be fine w/o a tuner.

I will check out Paradigm, too.

Greg

[slim] Slimserver/Squeezebox Performance Issues

2008-01-16 Thread Samson

Hi,

I am experiencing performance issues with my Squeezebox. It runs OK
most of the time, but then occasionally (every few days) gets itself
into a state where the music keeps dropping out, the screen goes blank,
tracks restart randomly. I'd like to determine whether this is due to
wireless network issues or server issues.

As suggested here:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?DiagnosingPerformanceIssues
...I set up the Performance Monitoring to log when server response time
0.5. I waited until I had problems then looked in the log and, sure
enough, there were a load of entries saying the response time had
breached the threshold. The question is: what does this mean? Is my
server too slow? Or could it be the network?
I've attached the log.

I'm running Slimserver 6.5.4 on an old IBM Thinkpad T21 which is wired
to my Netgear ADSL modem router. The squeezebox3 in question connects
wirelessly via a Belkin wireless repeater (because the Netgear can't
cover the whole house).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

[slim] SqueezeCenter 7.0 can't find my music files

2008-01-16 Thread andrew28

Just installed SqueezeCenter 7.0, which also successfully uninstalled
SlimServer 6.5.4. Everything looks okay, but for some reason it can't
find my music files on my NAS file server. I put in the directory
name, simply mapped as Z:\. This directory is easily accessible via
Explorer.

If I go to Basic Settings and click the Browse option for Music Folder,
it displays a blank window. No option to select a directory unless I
type it in manually.

I also activated the scanner, and the application now seems stuck in
perpetual scan mode - not finding anything and reporting 0 for total
tracks, artists, etc.

Another note - the opening screen on 7.0, on the right side always
tells me it can't find my player. After a few seconds, however, it
refreshes and finds it. Strangely, if I hit the F5 key, it goes back
to the same screen which says that it can't find my player. Wasn't
connection already established despite the screen refresh??
