Ah, so once you upgraded the firware were all your troubles solved? If
so, I guess Logitech should consider shipping with a later version of
the firmware.

I wonder why yours is so different?

 MC

Me too with one exception, the setup procedure didn't work at all. had
to resort to NET-UDAP to point the SBR to my server.
But the Controller has worked flawlessly for me.

There are some wol bugs and other handling Quirks (SC to SN switching)
but thats minimal problems.

I have my WRT54GL router set to 251mW (default 41) of power on the
wireless (the maximum settings he he ) and I live in an 69 Square
meters 2 room flat.
And i'm alone on channel 6 in my building. both my players show around
90% (was 75 with 41mW )signal strength. I can use the Controller from
my bathroom
trough 1 concrete and 1 sheetrock wall to my router.

Not being able to download fw and sluggish Controller behavior IS
usually some kind off wireless problem. They are working on some
compatibility issues.

Off course dont use the 7.0 software I never used it. the last months
i've been on some kind of 7.01 .

If you tried the product with 7.0 and returned it, that was a little
premature decision me thinks.
To criticize Logitech just a little with hindsight the product was
released prematurely but everybody does that*. With 7.01 its ready for
consumers

I would be astonished if the controller actually had less usable range
than the player, THAT would be a piece of cr*p or really really stupid
design parameters.

egd,

I find it worrying that the first person from down under to review the
duet has one with out of date firmware and dead pixels.

I can't remember what firmware version I had when mine was delivered
but it did do everything wirelessly and I heven't noticed any dead
pixels.

Battery life is average, about a long evening, shorter than the Harmony
1000 which has the same battery in it but doesn't do as much.

Have things improved since you have been able to upgarde the firmware?

Probably because it shipped with r1425 of the firmware and I'm guessing
yours shipped with a newer version. I have it working now (firmware
upgrade), but I'm pretty damned sure the average consumer would have
sent it back and assumed it was faulty. Battery was charged overnight
and drained flat within 4 hours.
My first couple of charges lasted only 4-5 hours as well, but I don't
think I was down to early firmware as my firmware was updated
automatically within about 15 minutes of taking it out of the box.

The initial low battery life was down one think, the fact that I was
using it a lot in those first couple of days. I was picking it up and
playing with it all the time, trying out all the features, installing
new plugins and testing those, skipping up and down my music library.
As such the first couple of charges we under non-typical use.

As soon as I settled down battery life shot up. If I use the Controller
normally, queuing up music throughout the day, it makes it through a
full day and into the next day without a charge. If I don't use the
controller for a couple of days it survives quite happily and still has
some charge when I come back to it.

So I think some documentation is probably needed to explain this to the
average consumer.

Sure it would be nice if the battery lasted even longer, but that would
mean a bigger and clunkier Controller and I like the nice slim form that
it has.

Cannot find my Wireless network which works for any number of pc's,

Still doesn't recognize my network, or more specifically the password

Re: [slim] Controller: first impressions/ experience

2008-05-17 Thread Trumanswater

Received mine in NZ yesterday. A very frustrating experience, the
controller would not update and it would take minutes to connect to my
existing Squeezeboxes (I have 2 Squeezebox 3s) if at all (most of the
time it wouldn't connect even if it was next to them and the wireless
network router).

If I used Squeezecenter on my PC to connect to Squeezenetwork
everything worked but if I tried to use the controller to reconnect any
of the Squeezeboxes to my music files it never connected. Even when I
used the web interface to connect to my local music and on the rare
occasion the controller connected to one of my squeezebox 3s, it showed
what was playing but had no menu options to browse my music library and
change what was playing. This was all using the latest Squeezecenter
7.0.1.

Finally today out of desperation I installed the 7.1 alpha. The
controller then updated properly for the first time and now everything
works perfectly. Changing player takes about 2 seconds and my music
library is available and works fine on all of them. Switching between
Squeezenetwork and Squeezecenter also works fine. Only minor problem
is the standard Squeezecenter web interface is corrupt (it is alpha
software) but changing from Classic to Fishbone has sorted that for
now.

Worth a try for those with problems. [I have an XP PC and a USR9106
wireless router]

Re: [slim] Controller: first impressions/ experience

2008-05-17 Thread egd

I upgraded the firmware via SqueezeCenter Version: 7.1 - 19758 binaries.
With the updated firmware it's functional and I can use it to interact
with my library. The overall build quality is pretty poor though - the
battery lid has play and squeaks as your palm closes around it when
pressing buttons etc. The scroll wheel still leaves a lot to be
desired when compared to any iPod device. Oversteering is pretty easy
once it gets going and I find that it's not particularly responsive
getting it going.

I don't mean to bash the product, but I reckon a native application
running on an iPhone or iPod Touch will make for a much nicer wireless
remote.

Re: [slim] Playback of 24bit/96khz FLAC files

2008-05-17 Thread Pale Blue Ego

The SB3 can sometimes handle 24/96kHz material by throwing away every
other sample, effectively giving you a resolution of 24/48kHz. But the
SB3 CPU often chokes on the large amount of data in a 24/96 file. The
best way to counter this is to downsample the file in a WAV editor and
save it as 24/48 WAV, then compress to FLAC.

[slim] Strange artwork behaviour 7.01

contain shortcuts as I have several locations.

I then added another shortcut and rescanned. The new files added do not
show the artwork in the album list or under artistalbum. However, when
a track is selected the artwork appears (also on the now playing). Once
a track has been played, the artwork is remembered. This behaviour
happens on squeezecenter and the remote.

There are many frustrations surrounding the SD products, but all in all,

I love the players.

As to the Controller, I have been pleasantly surprised. I have read so

order one. However, mine has worked without a hitch and I think it is a
teriffic product. Best of all, my wife likes how intuitive it is and is
now more interested in my whole digital storeage project.

I get the impression a lot of the problems come from wireless issues
more than problems with the Controller itself. I invested in a very
nice router (linksys)and that has reduced a lot of the problems I know
people have not just with the Controller but w/the SB/Receiver/TP.

Anyway, keep trying with the Controller, it has a lot of potential.

 - the firmware would not upgrade via wireless. After reading forum

had an SD card adapter and was able to use a micro-SD card from my PDA
for the job. If I hadn't had that I'd still be screwed!

 - the damned thing has dead pixels

 - the battery life is extremely poor

given it is still under heavy development, perhaps it would be
worthwhile posting a sticky topic to help new users figure out what

All in all a very disappointing experience thus far.

I just got my controller this week and my experience is 180 degrees
from yours.

- full interaction with my library, music services and internet radio.
- update over network worked flawlessly
- no dead pixels
- battery life has been great for me. I have the dim set to the
shortest length. I've yet to run it down below 2/3 full even after a
couple of hours of off and on use.
- build quality on mine has none of the issues you mention in a later
post. No squeeks, etc.

I couldn't be happier. In fact, my wife asked why we didn't get one
earlier. Only complaint is it looks like it will be easy for gunk to
work its way between the buttons and the case/wheel.

I'm unsure what firmware shipped on mine as it worked out of the box.

Sounds like you may have gotten a dud; sucks, but it happens. I'd ship
it back and get another.

Re: [slim] Multiple players/servers/SC versions w/ Controller ?

2008-05-17 Thread twylie

follow-up with some additional information.

I was unable to find a way to bail out on the controller upgrading
between the different versions of SqueezeCenter.

I ended up uninstalling 7.0.1 and installing 7.0 on my Windows server.
This puts it on the same version that the Thecus module is built
against.

Everything is working great now. Switching between players being
driven from different servers is very quick. It takes about 2 sec to
find the players connected to the other server during the Choose Player
process. Once I chose the other player, it connects and is ready to go
in under 3 sec.

I'll have to keep my servers versions in sync and not upgrade until
builds are available for the N5200. Probably easier for plugin
maintenance, etc anyway.

When I first scanned my folder (containing one shortcut to a location) ,
all the artwork appeared correctly. I have set up the folder just to
contain shortcuts as I have several locations.

I then added another shortcut and rescanned. The new files added do not
show the artwork in the album list or under artistalbum. However, when
a track is selected the artwork appears (also on the now playing). This
behaviour happens on squeezecenter and the remote.

 Any ideas?

Try running a full Clear library rescan. I have issues occasionally
with the New and changed rescan not finding artwork for some or all
newly added albums. The full rescan always works.

Got mine this week and happy to say that it is working very well.
i bought the Duet package just for the Controller to access my

the Controller seems to have a lot of potential and i await with
interest it's ongoing development.
i see Ver 7.0.1.has been upgraded again, so i'm off to install it now.

[slim] Should I upgrade from 6.5.4?

2008-05-17 Thread franko180

All,

I've been a bit (maybe a lot) out of touch with developments on
Slimserver software. Here is what I'm running now-

SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 - Windows Server 2003 - EN - cp1252
Perl Version: 5.8.8 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt

Everything is working fine for me, but should I be upgrading to 7.x? Am
I missing any functionality? If I do upgrade, will it break any plugins?
I'm running AlienBBC and have the Weather Time and Date screen saver
installed (I think version 1.9.1).

Thanks!

[slim] SQueeze controller update failed for first time

2008-05-17 Thread pbol

Hi,

When I first upgraded to 7.01 the squeeze controller started to signal
when updates were available. It did so two times and downloadning
worked prefectly. Now today I tried to force an update manually by
selectin software update in the menu. To my surprise the display says
that there is an update available, and I select begin update. After a
whiel I get the message There was a problem upgrading this remote,
please try again or contact support.

What does that mean?

1: Why did the remote tell me that the upgrade was available?
2: Is there really an update or is the remote just assuming that there
is one, and when there is nonoe it fails?

/peter

the controller constantly drops out of the network, and there is

There's an app I use in production of 5.1 Dolby and DTS, but it works
with ProTools and does cost $1000 just for the plugin...probably NOT
really on the affordable side, eh?

I'd love to know HOW you're ripping MLP audio from DVD-A? Maybe we
could work out a 'trade' where I'll encode your WAV files to DTS if you
rip some of my DVD-A that don't have a Dolby/DTS playlist on them.
That's the ONLY way I've been able to do it so far, is by extracting
Dolby or DTS, but not the lossless.

Use a free tool such as Audacity to properly resample down to 48 Khz.
The command-line tool, sox, can do this as well. The files will have to
be in one of the supported formats to begin with however, (hopefully
FLAC,) as these tools do not support a lot of formats.

You'll need new versions of your plugins that are compatible with v7.

You can take a look at the (long) list of features and improvements
here:

If you see something you like, upgrade. I haven't had any problems

and improved player synchronization.

What you need to do is re-encode (or transcode as it can be refered to

the perl script flac2mp3 works well (google for it) thats whay I use.
It isn't the most ueser friendly though as it is a Perl script run from
a command line.

DBPoweramp works well too, although I don't think it is free.
Foobar2000 can do it too.

There are hundreds of others ouit there that can do what you want.

Re: [slim] Controller: first impressions/ experience

2008-05-17 Thread audio53

I received my Controller on Thursday. In under 5 minutes I had it
unpacked, looked over the quick start booklet, it found my network,
updated the firmware and I was playing music on my SB3 (battery was at
half charge when I unpacked it.). I really enjoy this thing. It is a
big advantage to me to have the screen with me instead of having to put
my glasses on to read the SB3 display across the room from my listening
position. Since I play mostly classical, I look at the screen quite a
bit to keep up with what movement is playing, especially with less
familiar pieces. I don't use album art so can't comment there. All in
all, nice job Slim Devices.

[slim] Dropouts with Softsqueeze on cabled network

I'm running SqueezeCenter 7 on a Windows XP SP2 machine (an Athlon 64

I'm getting frequent drop-outs or gaps in music playback, usually 0-2
seconds in duration.

I am using Softsqueeze as a local player on the same machine, but the
music is stored on a network share. The network connection is gigabit
over Cat5 cable. There's no other application accessing that

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to elminate this, as it's very

Re: [slim] Squeezecenter 7 fails to start on XP

2008-05-17 Thread squeezebox_huf

This has been bugging me for quite a while now - in fact since I
upgraded from slimserver6.5.4 to squeezecentre 7. I think I finally
cracked it tonight, please let me know if this helps anyone else!

In the end I discovered that the 2 new services added by the
installation were interfering with each other. Both Squeezecenter
Service and SqueezeMySQL were added as Automatic starting services.
The SqueezeMySQL service was always in a state of Stopping... but
never stopped! So I killed the MySQLd process. That stopped it. I
noticed that if I started the SqueezeCenter Service then the
SqueezeMySQL service also started gracefully by itself and the whole
thing was running OK. So my fix was to change the SqueezeMySQL service
to be a Manual startup service. Now the SqueezeCenter service starts
it up automatically. I think they were fighting with each other at boot
time.

I hope this helps.

Hamish.

Dylan. I'd prefer for him to be listed as Dylan, Bob.

Can this be done?

Also, is there a way to tag files that have say, two primary artists so
that they are listed twice, under both artists?

[slim] Composers listed in Artists. Why?

When I look at music for a specific artist, the listing includes
anything that may have been composed by that artists. How can I limit
the listing for an artists to files on which the person is the

For me it did do the trick.

Hi Kim
great idea... Thx a lot. Unfortunately it did not work.
Same result like before. I will try again tomorrow morning.

For Flac, create two ARTIST fields. Alternatively, use a separator
character, which is how it must be done with tagging systems such as
ID3v2.

ARTIST=Mark Knopfler
ARTIST=Chet Atkins

When you browse by artist, both will show up in the list and the album
will be listed below each artist. When you browse by album, though,
the album will (or should) never appear twice. It will be grouped with
one or the other artist (I think it's usually the first one
alphabetically). You can force the grouping using something like

ALBUMARTIST=Mark Knopfler
ARTIST=Mark Knopfler
ARTIST=Chet Atkins

But one downside to doing this is that the album will appear to be by
the album artist and won't display both artist names until you drill
down into the album or track detail level.

Yep.

Perhaps I can do some sort of batch thing with MP3TAG to force the
current contents of artistsort into artist. Anyone know?

Yes, you can easily do this in Mp3tag. Either create and save an
Action (Aa buttons) or use a 'Quick' Action (an action that isn't
saved). Select 'Format Value', enter 'ARTIST' under 'Field:' and
'%artistsort%' under 'Format string:'.

After I posted my message, I noted that 7.0.1 was available. Downloaded
and installed, including associated firmware (took longer than
expected), and now the playlists work properly. There is a play all

Re: [slim] Announcement: SqueezeCenter 7.0.1 Now Available

2008-05-17 Thread RonM

I just did the update. It's seamless. You download the new update file
(an exe), and then run the file. It first uninstalls previous versions,
then installs the new, retaining all library information. Subsequently,
it seems that a firmware upgrade is invoked for the SC, and then for the
remote. You may not have access to the system during this firmware
update process.

After that it's all as it was before, with some functionality added,
and bugs fixed.

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter on Windows Server 2008

It is running fine here on Windows 2008 Server too. I installed it when
I was logged in as the local administrator account on a pretty much out
of the box version of the OS. Worked fine, even opened the right ports
in the firewall itself. Changing it to run as a service worked
perfectly too.

Sorry to hear about your problems but you should know it is possible
and working elsewhere.

Re: [slim] Playlists from WMP: Not working properly

2008-05-17 Thread JimC

RonM;302790 Wrote:
 Hi all,

Been using the SBD for a couple weeks now, haven't had any significant
problems with basic functionality. I'm running Squeezecenter from my
home PC, with all audio files on a dedicated drive. There is about
120gb of music. Will migrate to a server structure later.

But I'm having problems with the playlist function. I can create a
playlist in WMP, and it works perfectly on the PC. When I look in SC,
it also appears perfect -- all the files are there, for long playlists
 these are in multiple pages.

However, when I access the playlist from the remote things fall apart.
I can see the playlist name, highlight it and select. It will then take
me to a screen with a first page of song titles and selecting one of
these (any one, first, middle or last) results in a dialogue asking if
I want to play the title. I can play the title.

However, there is no option for Play All as there is when an album or
artist is selected. After the single song is played, nothing more
 happens.

This appears to happen with all play lists, but is particularly
annoying for large ones. For instance, I have one playlist that
contains all the Canadian artists in my collection, a lot of titles.
I'd like to be able to play these on shuffle, but can't.

 Any solutions?

 R.

Press *play* when the name of the playlist is highlighted. You can
play an artist, an album, and even a complete genre this way. No need
to press the *center* button to get to *play all*.

check settings-music library. Is there a check mark on 'list composers
as artist' selection. Alternatively, check your tags; see if artist
contains exactly what you want.
