Re: [slim] Logitech Squeezebox Boom?

2008-08-07 Thread Kim.T

Back to the topic : Boom

Hmmm, it's a good start. But as mentioned it could use batteries (but
we have seen various problems with the controller and power save that
don't have to be adressed if the player have to be connected to power).

Next it stille req. a server where the music is stored (could probably
be connected to SqueezeNetwork, MP3Locker). But the best thing
would be that music could be played from internal HDD/USB without a
server.

The Music IP install freezes every time at ' Extracting Files'

Although there are details of the plugins themselves in the Wiki and

I think you might have. SqueezeCenter can not playpack music by itself,
only control playback on attached players such as a Squeezebox, Duet
Receiver, Transporter, or software players. SoftSqueeze is a software
player provided by SqueezeCenter. You can find it in the Extra menu
in SqueezeCenter. It requires Java to be installed on the machine you
want to her playback on. I.e. not necesarily on the machine running
SqueezeCenter.

In order to use it just fire up the webinterface as you usually do and
to to the Extras menu. It's pretty self-explanatory from there.
Otherwise just ask again.

Hope this helps.

well if the slimdevices fanboys are happy to close the thread, I guess
we can all go home.

The final argument seems to be: no it is not bloatware, just throw more
hardware against it. Sad times are ahead :(

Apart from that, we obviously have a different view on what 'silent'
is. Getting a system with a cpu that has a termal envelope of +100W to
run silent is *very* costly. Unless you mean by noisless that you can't
hear it when it is in the server room and you are in another.

My system(s) stand in the living room, and my wife is very picky when
it comes to noise. *very*. Try getting your super 4 core 4GB
dreammachine to run fanless Your argument is just silly.

You also completely miss the point that when it takes +100MB RAM, it
will probably also use quite a bit of CPU power to execute the lot.

I see your point and I can tell you why they are not ok for me, now
look at it from my point of view. Given the functionality SS gives,
+100MB is just way over it.

(And yes, I think FF3 also consumes too much memory, but that is
probably due to caching pages in memory.)

I have over 30,000 songs, mostly FLACs with no transcoding and no

I tried this on a Dual Core T61 Thinkpad running Windoze Vista, also

Rewriting the server in a different language is a huge job and it's

[slim] Where have support staff gone re: controller issue questions?

2008-08-07 Thread Milhouse

There does seem to be a much reduced level of interest from
developers/support staff where Controller/network issues are concerned
- we don't even get suggestions as to what logs could be gathered which
may help pinpoint the issue, in fact we get pretty much nothing at all
which is very unlike the old days.

In the recent past I have been guilty of suggesting that Conbtroller
network problems were due to duff routers not implementing PSM
correctly, but now that I have a Controller which fails to work with a
known-good PSM implementation that clearly isn't always the cause of
these problems. My Controller has had to be returned due to a faulty
button, but when I get a replacement and it continues to have problems
I'll open a support ticket by email (no way am I making a transatlantic
phone number to discuss faulty software, which would cost me a fortune).
However the apparent lack of interest in Controller/network bugs from
Slim Devices on the forums is quite worrying - perhaps it's the
influence of Logitech. I even added to a bug in bugzilla, which has
been ignored.

One thing that did make me laugh - this morning I received a boiler
plate email from Michael Valera asking me to fill in a customer
questionnaire regarding my Duet purchase, starting out with We hope
you are enjoying your purchase etc. Well guess what Michael, no I'm
f*g not! :)

Not commenting on the performanace of SC as opposed to any other
software, but as someone who fondly remembers the days of Spectrums,
TRS80s and the BBC Micro (still in my attic!), I can't help but recall
some of the quite amazing games (eg Elite), spreadsheets, databases etc
that packed a huge amount into 16 or 32k of ram.

I tend to agree with previous posters that using 100mb (over 3,000
times more than 32k) of memory does seem excessive. It's not
exclusively an SC issue, but programming efficiency generally seems to
have been abandoned as availability of RAM has increased.

[slim] Multiple copies of the same song, and other library issues.

2008-08-07 Thread Meatwad650

I've got some library management issues, and maybe folks can help:

What's the best way of having multiple copies of the same song around?

Here's the scenario: I've got multiple copies of files around. For
example, I ripped a CD in FLAC and then transcoded to MP3 for the iPod.
But not all my MP3s are available in FLAC. So I would love to have a
way to be able to tell SC Hey, look in /FLAC *and* look in /MP3. But
if you find the same song/album/whatever in both places then don't
bother with the one in /MP3.

Now even if SC could do this I'd have another problem: I've got SC
right now using my iTunes library. (I know I could rip to Apple
Lossless, but I don't want to for a few reasons, one being that my
Denon AVR can't play it, but it can play FLAC.) This is great with
smart playlists and the like. However, obviously to do the above I'd
need to not do that anymore and just scan through all my music...but I
like my iTunes playlists. Can I just keep them?

If anyone is in a similar dilemma and has advice, let me know.

First SC does a good bit more than those games of 30+ years ago.
Second coding for efficiency can be very expensive and many times not
worth the return. It also can lead to sacrificing maintainability

Reason, they have no issues throwing hardware at it, it is much cheaper

I have not looked into SC code, however I am willing to bet a good bit
of the memory is consumed by indexes. And no using more memory does
NOT equate to using more CPU power.

To the comment about being worried about the times ahead because of

Being able to take the thing outside without a power cord would be nice
though, although you're already limited by the necessity of a wifi
connection. OTOH, perhaps the thing didn't run very long on batteries
with the VFD and the Wifi radio and that's another reason why they left

thanks for proceeding with the bug report, this thread seems to have
died, a few initial ideas but now everyone's gone.
It is clear people have different problems, for me SC never rescans,
there is no corrupt drive or such because a manually initiated scan
does scan the whole library without problems.
Not sure how this will be fixed as the loss of auto rescan seems to
have crept in after v 7.0.
Next week I will get around installing the system and try v7.1

\MP3copies(of flac)
\MP3originals

Then create an empty Musicfolder for SC, and place shortcuts to the

The wireless VLAN works by using a web based login - this is fine for
laptops, my nokia 770, pda etc etc but the duet controller falls at the
login hurdle. It says connected, but doesn't see the music server. If it
was a laptop - I guess it would be sitting on the web login page saying
something like 'The draytek router has blocked your access - please
login'.

Does anyone know if it is possible to make the controller automatically
login at this stage. Is this a trivial code change/some sort of
script/not possible etc? (I am a engineer with considerable software
experience - but have not yet touched any code in the slimserver and do
not have linux experience.

Thanks for any help.

You are right in that it's not SC's FAULT, I never said it was.

AND it's a case where throwing HW at it does NOT solve the issue. It's

deprive me of 50% of my development time.

and they are often less than a couple of MB of code. So *your*

I agree on the memory part, but the language DOES have an impact since
perl isn't really fast, too.

Re: [slim] Stop the bloatware madness!

2008-08-07 Thread m1abrams

Oh and to tally up what SC does for ~100MB
1. Web Server
2. Web Content that is actually pretty advanced with the ability to
skin
3. Database Server that has no issues with very large music
collections well over 10K tracks
4. Media Server for multiple clients
5. Plugin support, although plugins do add to the footprint I know I
have both Biography and Album Review and my total res. memory usage for
mysql and SC is under 100MB.
6. RSS reader, again mine is on and active and still under 100MB.

Probably a few more items I am missing. Also if you run other
applications that require mysql they will share the memory requirements
of mysql.

[slim] Possible solutions to wireless router problems

2008-08-07 Thread kkl

Hi Everybody

Problem: Problems connecting to Wireless router (Specifically Netopia
3357W).

In detail: After a lot of hassle connection my SB Duet Reciever to my
router (Not finding it at all, staying yellow, turning green but no
respons and so on) I finally figured out how to do it. My main problem
was actually connecting after moving it around a bit - from upstairs to
downstairs - nice possibility to be able to move it around (even though
bying another unit is ofcourse the best option). Anyways - figured I
would post this here because I see that connecting to the Netopia 3357W
has been a problem also for others).

1st: Telnet your router (or ask your ISP for help)
- Choose the Stateful Inspection option
- Under UDP no-activity timeout (sec) set it to at least 320 seconds
(default is 180 I think?).
NOTE: I am not absolutely sure this is part of my solution, but anyways
this is what I did before I discovered the second of my tips here..

2nd: When connecting: Unplugg the power to the Reciever..
- Turn it back on
- Now: Turn of your router and turn it back on
- Be patient...

Now - every time without failure the SQ Reciever finds the network and
the music sources .-)

Hopefully this will help somebody else. If not it only took me about 2
minutes to write this post - and telling yourself you succeded with
something is also a good trick .-)

Stateful Inspection, or Stateful Packet Inspection, is part of your
firewall - why is this causing a problem for purely LAN access? What is
the Receiver doing that is being blocked by the firewall which normally
should block only WAN activity?

Also, did you slaughter any black cats while working this out? :)

[slim] Controller wheel (slightly) resists at one point

2008-08-07 Thread simbo

Not sure if anybody else has this issue. The wheel on my controller,
which generally works well and smoothly rotates, has one particular
point in its rotation where it ever-so-slightly resists. Not enough to
stop it rotating (unless you're -very light- in using it) but enough to
notice its there.

Is it spoiling my enjoyment of the product? Nah. But it something that
occasionally niggles me.

What battery technology do you know that can continuously power an good

could maybe muster 3 hours?

Well done not putting a battery in Slim Devices. For the vast majority
of customers it's a better product for it IMO - it's an all in one home
Squeezebox system, not a portable system (plenty already on a saturated
market anyway). Instead of a small few people complaining it as no
battery, you would have a huge amount of people complaining it had a
terrible battery and was too heavy etc.

One app I'm currently waiting for (did a paypal donation in the early

Anyway, loved iPeng the day I set eyes on it, look forward to the

The more i think about it, makes so much sense that it could well be,

chose a Sonos in the UK over the SB*. And we asked for the Boom and got

Yeah when I saw it had a VFD I gave up on battery, just wishful
thinking. While VFD is great for display it is not so nice on power.
If you could manage the VFD power requirements via auto-off quickly
cause in this environment the display is not so important. Then the
wifi and an efficient amp cause really does this type of device need a
high-end power hungry amp, heck I would have been happier if they went
the Tivilo(sp?) approach and did a mono speaker with the option to add
a speaker, cause stereo on 2 speakers 6inches apart really does not
work so well. So now, reduce the amp load and display load you just
have the wireless for big draws. If you use D cell batteries you
probably could get some decent play times.
Course like you said, how many times would you really need batteries.
Only time I can think is on the Deck, or while I am washing the car.
Course I can take the extra time to grab power cord, but not having to
do that would make it more likely the wife would grab it.

[slim] End of the road for my SLIMP3 - Please say not...

2008-08-07 Thread mcknej01

I've been a massive advocate and fan of all things Slimdevices ever
since first purchasing my first SLIMP3 way back when. I've followed
the developments, now run a SB1, SB2, SB3 and Duet system all from my
Thecus N5200BR Pro NAS (thanks Omega).

Now to the point, it is a sad day for me. My SLIMP3 has stopped
intercepting infrared commands from the standard Slimdevices remote
control handset (I've tested it with 3 remotes, and they all work with
the SB1, SB2 etc). The SLIMP3 box just sits there trying to find a now
defunct Slimserver, which is on a differnet LAN subnet to my current
operational setup.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reset the SLIMP3(so as to
automatically pickup my current LAN settings), or better still have any
idea about the Infrared not working?

I can't bear the thought of this little bit of streaming media history
being relegated to the back of a cupboardIt deserves a second
chance! I mean, Andy didn't give up on Sheriff Woody. So I can't turn
my back on my SLIMP3.

I believe at last we have an SD product that could -genuinely- be sold
at PC World (or Best Buy, whatever) without any niggling guilt of
having sold something beyond the buyer's technical capability. What I
mean is, by lay people who can just take it home and plug it in. *

It's an internet clock radio, first and foremost. But forget your
Roberts equivilents, this can also be used with Pandora, Rhapsody and
LastFM. That's the USP.

And There's More! If you want to access your own digital music
collection, just install this free software onto your PC and away you
go!

(Oh, and it's good for us too! Squeeze in the garden! Woohoo!)

* Forget the usual Sonos arguments of It has to connect to you wifi,
that's complicated. If they can get their Wii's working, why not this?

I reported something like this on the second beta test Controller I

left over from the molding process that's catching on something -
perhaps the gap between two of the surrounding buttons? I agree that it
slightly spoils the feel of the device - that wheel really ought to be
completely smooth, especially considering it's a $300 device.

The idea that the music server needs to be anywhere near the SqueezeBox,

No one proposed such a thing. But my quad core machine is relatively
quiet and it was not designed to be low noise or low power. There are
tons of machines that are lower noise and lower power than my quad.

I think most of the complaints are from folks trying to use cheap NAS
boxes, which is in itself a mistake IMHO. VIA has several processors
that are fanless, as is the new Intel ATOM line.

[slim] Volume drops.

2008-08-07 Thread Nonreality

I have my SB3 volume manually set to 100%. Windows XP. Ever since the
official 7.1 SC whenever I use lastFM through SC my volume drops to
-20DB. Is this part of the volume problem? Everyone I've seen with
that problem has the volume fixed in the setting of SC. I don't. Mine
is manually set with the remote and left there. I like having the
option to lower the volume with the SB remote if I can't find my
receiver's remote. In the 7.1 beta's I never had this problem. Do I
need to go to a nightly to fix it? Thanks

Okay.

Admittedly I have a slightly older Core2Duo B3 myself but if their
quad-core design (B4 model) is remotely similar--and all the specs
indicate it is--then it doesn't even have a fan in the power supply.
And I still have mine running in a closet in a room across the house,
because of the very slight hum of the 2.5 HDD.

Sure there's a price premium. But to be perfectly honest you don't
even need a Core2Duo to run a media server, let alone a quad-core, so
we're already talking about spending more than you technically need to.

2008-08-07 Thread fcm4711

Hi Eric

Sorry for the trouble. The issue has been fixed, but didn't make it
into SC 7.1 unfortunately.

But all is not lost as the bug only shows if you switch between WEP and
WPA/WPA2 encrypted access points without doing a factory reset on the
SB3 first.

Therefore I suggest you try a factory reset on your SB3, by holding
down the (+) button on your remote while powering it up. After that you
should be able to enter the WPA2 key.

Heck I have a Phenom 9500 running virtually silent if you disable the
harddrives. Hard drives are much harder to isolate noise from. The
machine is not fanless, however I am using 2 of these fans
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0266398

And a sychte mini-ninja cooler using 1 of the above fans in place of
the stock. I even have the fans running at full tilt and you can not
hear them.

Problem with running any machine completely fanless is other parts of
the system expect to have some airflow. Things like the voltage
regulators expect to get a little bit of air movement off of the cpu
cooler. A motherboard with passive cooling on the northbridge expects
some air movement, in fact some makers even say in the manual if you
water cool the machine you need to put a fan on certain parts.

The quad machine I have above is in my living room, it is my HTPC.
Only sounds I can hear are the fan whirl of the harddrive which can
only be heard if you listen for it when everything else is silent.

Yep. That's exactly the issue. Lot's of holes and a bit of convection
help here.
I've got A Via C7 1.5GHz in a small case that does the trick, haven't
seen any intel machines that would do the trick. Another alternative is
Heat Pipes but then you have to make sure all elements is the system are
connected to these.
Forget about high power machines for this.

Funny enough I have NO problem at all with the HD. It's in a fully
closed external SATA case and you do NOT hear it spin. You hear it when
it reads or writes data.

In idle mode the most noisy part of the system is actually the power
supply (no fan, the transistors and inductors).

put it in a different room from your SB is not an option, I've got an
SBx in every room except for the bathroom and that one is too wet for a
server.

Of course, if there are no batteries in it, then its not intended to be

format which could make it suitable for that kind of use. But as others
have said, it might not be feasible to power the thing on batteries
without sacrificing sound-quality while at the same time keeping it
portable. So I guess we'll just have to wait for this coldfusion
technology to stabilise... ALOT.

Being able to take the thing outside without a power cord would be
 nice
though, although you're already limited by the necessity of a wifi
 connection.

The evolution in tele-technology obsoletes that argument. My, and many
other common mobiles, can function as a wireless accesspoint using
hsdpa to pull down data. That's sufficient for even high bitrate mp3.
So for me, batteries could have added significant realworld value to

If your IR sensor is having problems this may not work. You could also

I run a C7 based server as well. It -could- be very quiet, but I didn't
bother as it's in the basement - and I like the idea of server HDs
getting airflow.
It -is- low power as it's on 24/7 (also the family web, ftp, and email
server).

That said, I'd be -delighted- if SC became larger - if that size
increase translated to a faster web interface.
For instance, a size-for-speed trade-off could come from storing all
expected web interface queries. e.g. pre-build the response to say
-home/artists/a-.
Memory is so cheap these days that, if I can trade it for speed, that's
a good deal.

Yeah, but how long is the battery life of your mobile while using hsdpa
to pull down data and at the same time acting as a wifi access point?

Edit: The Slimdevices guys are very good at knowing what is currently
feasible, they proved that with the SBs and the Duet and now with the

If so, your router likely does not support the wake part of the

Re: [slim] Can't get Rescan to do anything in 7.1

2008-08-07 Thread Lami

I have same problem with 7.1 (official) and 7.0.1 (it worked in some
cases, but mostly did not) on Windows XP (Czech locale). I do not have
any antivirus running, it is clean install (updated with latest Windows
update patches).
I am not able rescan anything on the network drive, although I see all
files in the Music folder menu (and can play them). Network share is
mapped to drive Z:, but it does not work even referred by UNC path
(\\server\share), although I can see and play files in both cases using
Music folder.

Interesting is that 7.1 (the rest is about 7.1 version) scans 2 example
music files installed on local drive (in Documents/Music/Examples folder
- don't know exact name, it is localized in my instalation), which is
choosen as playlist folder. And more interesting, it scans them even if
I put playlist folder into another location (like E:/test, existing
empty directory) and clear library and rescan.

Another thing is that if I play album using Music folder menu, it
appears in the library.

In the scanner log appear some error messages, I remember only
something about readonly namespace, followed by stack trace.

Another interesting information could be the system drive is E. Also
I see some glitches with unicode folder names (localized Application
Data folder name), but I am unsure if it causes any problems.

The problem was solved downgrading back to 7.0, which works
flawlessly.

I can install it again and try to provide you with any details I will
be able to find out, if you will need them.

If it has an SD slot and they add the audio playback, wonder how much
more it would be to have local playback ;). My only issue with

Yes, there is a SD slot. Or perhaps more properly a microSD slot
Its in the battery slot.

It shows up as a file system, so I would assume its nearly trivial to
read music off it and stream to some future headphone.

Not sure how useful this would be, lets see, 2GB on the SD card, 1.5TB
on my SqueezeCenter server

couldn't. It did still work fine for pause, skip, etc... If I turn
the controller off and back on then it starts working again for a few
 minutes.

Anyone have this problem or a solution to it?

The Controller wireless connections issues are widely reported. 7.1
makes things somewhat more bearable, but the best thing to do is
contact support and get an RMA.

I think it would be good if Logitech would more readily state what the
wireless connectivity issue is. Many people have experienced it, so it
is either
(a) a compatibility issue with several wireless routers, in which case
an official list of compatible wireless routers would be nice
(b) an issue affecting a certain production batch

In either case, knowing more about the issue would help me decide if I
can conjure up the confidence to buy a second Duet (the one I own is
about to go get replaced as an RMA). I have been a huge fan of the
traditional SB3, but need to decide whether going forward I'll stick
with the SB3, or whether I will give the Duet another chance as I keep
adding units to different areas of the house.

[slim] Food for wireless thought

2008-08-07 Thread Chris Laplante
Every day I see posts about people saying the wireless on X logislim
device is unreliable or broken... I recently moved, and took all of my
wireless/computer/phone gear and setup the exact same stuff in a new
house. It all worked flawlessly in the old house. In the new house
it's really spotty. When the wireless phone rings, the microwave turns
on, or I look at it wrong... It cuts out.

Same gear, different placement and building materials, very different
results. If I had bought this gear at my current home, I may too be
ranting that it must be shoddy QA. It makes it really apparent to me
that engineering wireless gear, esp on unlicensed frequencies for an
unknown environment is tricky business indeed.

Re: [slim] Food for wireless thought

2008-08-07 Thread tedfroop

Yes wireless is a bit of Black Magic at the moment but there are
things you can do to help it.
-Construction Materials play a big part in reception strength. Steel
studs, concrete, fireplaces, and brickwork are all poor materials for
running a wireless network around. Steel reflects signals and confuses
the heck out wireless. Dense stuff like concrete blocks the signal. Do
a survey first - will it work where I am?
- A good UPS or power filter. The filtering of line noise can help a
lot. I have a wireless system set up for my mother in law and there
are 27 visible networks where it is but it works just fine.
-Get rid of any phones etc. in the 2.4 gig range, period. (and don't
give the spread spectrum one to your neighbor - don't ask how I know.)
-Spring for a new microwave. They are not all that expensive any more
and better shielding and less line noise helps .
-Place the AP or Router above the receivers if possible. The pattern
of radiation from the antennas makes for better reception below than
above.
-Get a better antenna for your AP. A coathanger is better than most
stock antennas which are no more than a 3 piece of wire inside a
molded piece of plastic. Flat panel antennas work great for poorer
reception situations as they can be directed toward the client.

Always be prepared to wire your network. Wireless is a radio signal and
under certain conditions it will not work properly.

I'd go with the status query. You can tweak tags to only get what you want
(can make a considerable difference in response time). But it's a one time
round trip. It's what we're using to keep the web UI up to date.

If you can reproduce the issue about the count you should file a bug
